Tour de Hongrie: Sam Welsford wins opening stage ahead of heavy crash

Cavendish finishes sixth in front pack behind second-placed Quaranta and third-placed Mareczko

TANUNDA, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 16: Sam Welsford of Australia and Team BORA - Hansgrohe celebrates at finish line as stage winner during the 24th Santos Tour Down Under 2024, Stage 1 a 144km stage from Tanunda to Tanunda / #UCIWT / on January 16, 2024 in Tanunda, Australia. Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the opening stage of the Tour de Hongrie , outpacing Samuel Quaranta (MBH Bank Colpack Ballan) and Jakub Mareczko (Corratec-Vini Fantini) in a crash-hit sprint finish in Hajdúszoboszló.

The Australian bounced back from the disappointment of missing selection for the Giro d’Italia to take his fourth win of the year after a trio of victories on home ground at the Tour Down Under.

Behind him, Quaranta, the 21-year-old son of 1990s pro racer Ivan, couldn’t quite draw up alongside and had to settle for a clear second place, while fellow Italian Mareczko rounded out the podium ahead of Nicklas Pedersen (TDT-Unibet).

"Everyone was quite nervous about the wind in the first half of the stage. Ultimately the wind wasn't strong enough and so we've had quite a relaxed day until we hit the finishing circuit," Welsford said after his win.

"Hats off to the breakaway – they did a pretty good job staying away from the bunch. In the sprint, I had a good position, used other team's trains and had really good legs to take my first win here in Hungary."

Mark Cavendish took sixth place at the line after going a touch early following his Astana Qazaqstan team’s lead out, his best sprint result since winning stage 4 of the Tour Colombia back in February.

The sprint for the line was set up after lone breakaway survivor Martin Voltr (Pierre Baguette) was caught 13km from the line having gone solo at 38km from the end of the flat 166km opener.

He had been previously joined by Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Balazs Rózsa (Epronex-Hungary) and Viktor Filutás (Hungary) in the move but proved the strongest to last longer than his companions. He’d also pick up seven seconds of time bonuses along the way to launch himself up into second overall behind the first leader of the race, Welsford.

In the final run to the line, it was Astana who set up the most coherent lead-out train, with three riders bringing Cavendish to the sprint. However, the train peeled away a little too early to leave the Manxman sprinting with over 200 metres to go.

To his right, the likes of Welsford, Quaranta, Mareczko and Manuel Peñalver (Polti-Kometa) were all spread across the road and hitting the wind a little later, while over by the barriers a touch of wheels saw Campbell Stewart (Jayco-AlUla) rider hit the deck hard, sparking a multi-rider crash as the sprint unfolded ahead.

As Welsford powered to the front at the 50-metre mark, Cavendish sat back in the saddle, acknowledging the Australian’s winning burst to the line. In the final metres, Quaranta, Mareczko, Pedersen and Peñalver came through to round out the top five behind the winner.

Giro d'Italia

Wheels continue to come off visma-lease a bike: cian uijtdebroeks exits giro d’italia, a year after sweeping all three grand tours, the 'killer bees' are reeling from injuries and illnesses, and it remains uncertain if wout van aert or jonas vingegaard will race the tour de france..

Cian Uijtdebroeks was all smiles and poised for a podium run in fifth place overall in his Giro d’Italia debut, but an illness Wednesday sent the Belgian GC promise home in the latest setback for Visma-Lease a Bike .

One year ago, the Dutch outfit rode a wave of unprecedented success by winning all three grand tours in a row in wha was a cycling first.

Now it’s the “Killer Bees” that are getting stung.

“This morning we came to the decision to take Cian out of the race,” said Visma-Lease a Bike sport director Marc Reef. “It’s a huge setback for the team.”

Visma’s Giro lineup is slowly being depleted from illness and crashes, with Uijtdebroeks — the highly touted new recruit who was enjoying a breakout Giro with the white jersey as the best young rider and fifth overall at 4:15 back — the latest to leave the race.

Emerging sprinter star Olav Kooij , who won his first grand tour stage Sunday, also left with illness Tuesday. Christophe Laporte , whose spring campaign was already a disaster due to illness, did not start stage 8 after falling ill yet again.

Veteran Robert Gesink , set to retire this season, crashed in the first stage and did not start stage 2.

Team officials Wednesday told Wielerflits that the rash of abandons are not triggered by an outbreak of COVID-19.

Only four of the eight starters remain, leaving the team’s sport director’s heads spinning with half the Giro yet to come.

“Of course, we are disappointed we have to take him out, especially after we had to take Olav [Kooij] out yesterday,” Reef said.

“We were thinking that after the victory of Olav three days ago that we have everything to play for,” Reef said. “Now, two days later, we are in this situation were both of our guys where we had big goals with, where we could fight, they are both out.”

All eyes turn to Van Aert, Vingegaard and the Tour de France

Cian Uijtdebroeks

With the Giro now all but left in shambles, the team will turn its focus toward the Tour de France .

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is slowly on the mend from his devastating crash in April at Itzulia Basque Country that saw him undergo surgery for a broken clavicle and holed up in a Spanish hospital for weeks .

Team boss Richard Plugge expressed caution about whether or not Vingegaard will be able to defend his yellow jersey when the 2024 Tour starts June 29 in Florence, Italy.

“We have to consider two options, one that Jonas will go to the Tour, and the other that he isn’t,” Plugge told Relevo this week. “In the end, we cannot go to the Tour for Jonas to defend his title if he’s not 100 percent. That’s something that’s not going to happen.”

The Dane is finally back on the bike, with Danish media capturing images of him riding his bike near his hometown. Right now, there is no set calendar for a return to competition and Vingegaard will miss scheduled stints at altitude.

If that wasn’t enough, Visma-Lease a Bike raced much of the spring classics campaign without Wout van Aert . The Belgian bruiser crashed out at Dwars door Vlaanderen with a broken clavicle, but Plugge said Van Aert is tracking better to make the Tour .

“Wout has an advantage in that he’s a little ahead in his recovery, so physically we believe he’ll be there, but again, we have to wait,” Plugge said. “We still haven’t sat down with him to speak about his calendar after his crash. We have to see if he sees himself in the Tour or not, and we’ll analyze other options to decide.”

Of the team’s big captains, only Sepp Kuss remains relatively unscathed so far this season. The Vuelta a España winner raced a bit under the radar this spring, without posting any wins or podiums, but his goals are back-ended with a return to the Tour and Vuelta.

The team’s major highlight was a spectacular spring by new signing Matteo Jorgenson , who won Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen, and who is now preparing for the Tour.

#GirodItalia The Giro will have to continue without the biggest smile of the peloton . We regret to announce that Cian Uijtdebroeks is forced to abandon the race. Cian did not feel well the past days and after yesterday’s stage, he fell ill. We wish you a speedy recovery pic.twitter.com/L80yasqb2j — Team Visma | Lease a Bike (@vismaleaseabike) May 15, 2024

Despite the devastating string of bad luck, Visma-Lease a Bike vows to keep fighting during this Giro.

Jan Tratnik attacked in vain Tuesday with a long solo move only to be caught in the closing kilometers. Reef said the team will pivot toward an attacking, stage-hunting style.

The team’s remaining four riders — Tratnik, Attila Valter, Edoardo Affini and Tim van Dijke — will now have green lights to attack and ride into breakaways.

“We came here, and we prepared ourselves for months. It’s a new setback, but with 11 days to come, with our four guys who are healthy, they also prepared for weeks and months to fight for our goals in this Giro,” Reef said. “We still have the goal to fight for stage wins.”

What a difference a year makes.

Rewind 12 months ago, and Primož Roglič was poised to win the pink jersey at the beginning of its history-making grand tour sweep. Now the team is fighting for scraps.

BRUSSELS (AP) — World champion Mathieu van der Poel will focus on the Olympic road race at the Paris Games this summer, after competing in the Tour de France, and skip mountain biking.

The versatile Dutch racer said Wednesday that combining the Tour and the road race is “the most logical” choice.

“It ensures that I have a little more time and thus can prepare longer and better,” he said in a statement released by his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.

Van der Poel has won titles in many disciplines and thought at one point about competing in the cross-country mountain bike event at the Olympics. But he faced what he called a “difficult puzzle to put together” with the route of the road race suiting his skills.

“Just the road race? Only mountain biking? Or both?” he said. “Whether or not in combination with the Tour de France, which I personally consider the best possible preparation for the Games.”

Van der Poel finally made his decision.

“Let’s say I chose the most logical thing,” he said. “So, in consultation with the team, I opted for a slightly longer rest period, after which I can build up to the Tour de France and the Olympic road race without time pressure.”

The 29-year-old rider, who has been in impressive form this year with victories at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix classics, said he will work in support of teammate Jasper Philipsen “in his hunt for stage wins and a possible green jersey” of Tour de France’s best sprinter.

“And the goal is to win a stage myself this year,” he said. “Last year I got sick when there were a few stages where I had chances. Hopefully I will be spared from that in this edition.”

Van der Poel added that wearing the world champion’s rainbow jersey this season played a role in his decision to race at the Tour.

“It’s a special year,” he said. “As world champion I like to ride in that jersey as much as possible. So I also prefer not to miss the Tour de France. And that proved to be a good preparation last year, then towards the World Championships.”

He also hinted that he could compete in mountain biking at future Olympics. Van der Poel crashed out of the mountain bike race at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Who knows what’s still possible in 2028 in Los Angeles? That’s still a long time away, but I’ll be in a different phase of my career then,” he said. “Maybe then I can put everything on that mountain biking. This year the combination is just too difficult.”

Van der Poel, who is currently training in Spain, will not compete before the June 29-July 21 Tour de France. The men’s Olympic road race is a challenging 273-kilometer (170-mile) trek set to take place on Aug. 3.

Favorites stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024 | Sea Battle at WorldTour level!

T he riders of the Giro d'Italia faced a tough return after their rest day, but the second Wednesday of the Italian tour might offer a lighter challenge. The route from Foiano di Valfortore to Francavilla al Mare spans two hundred mostly flat kilometers, and IDLProCycling.com will tell you all about it.

Course stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024

After a 140-kilometer stage on Tuesday, Wednesday's stage will be about two hundred kilometers. The race kicks off in Foiano di Valfortore, located in the same region of Benevento, where the previous stage wrapped up. The peloton will make its way through the Apennines towards the coast, tackling some significant climbs in the early part of the stage.

The route begins with a gentle ascent towards San Bartolomeo in Galdo, climbing a 6.5-kilometer false flat. After reaching the top, the route levels out onto a plateau before descending about twenty kilometers down to the base of the day’s only categorized climb.

The ascent to Pietracatella (7.8 km at 5.7%) could be pivotal, as previous sprint stages have shown that some teams believe they can make a difference uphill. If the race heats up on this climb, it could spell trouble for the heavier sprinters. Following another hill and the intermediate sprint in Cascalenda, the race still has over a hundred kilometers to go.

The course then heads to the Adriatic coast, arriving in Termoli. From there, the riders follow the coast to Francavilla al Mare, with no significant challenges left on the route. This sets up a perfect scenario for the sprinters' teams to take control, though Giro history tells us that even the best of plans can falter in this race.

The final stretch isn’t particularly technical. There are only two turns in the last four kilometers, with a straight run of three kilometers to the finish. This setup is ideal for sprint trains to line up for a high-speed showdown among the fastest riders this week.

48.4 km: Pietracatella (7.8 km at 5.7%)

Start: 12:05 PM

Finish: around 5:10 PM

Weather stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024

Concerned about the weather? There's little need. Starting out, the riders will enjoy a tailwind and temperatures around 23 degrees Celsius, though conditions will shift as they near the Adriatic coast. In the final flat section, they’ll face a crosswind, but traditionally this hasn’t affected the Giro very much.

Favorites stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024

With several sprinters still in contention, a bunch sprint involving the whole peloton is the most probable outcome for this eleventh stage, despite a few challenging climbs in the first half.

Why? Teams like Alpecin-Deceuninck are likely wary of pushing the pace too hard after their previous ordeals, despite their sprinter Kaden Groves benefiting from a tougher race. The climbs are quite a distance from the finish, making teamwork potentially beneficial, possibly even alongside Jonathan Milan ’s Lidl-Trek.

Jonathan Milan, along with Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step — who is recovering from a nasty fall in last week’s time trial — is among the fastest in the race, though Merlier's speed typically diminishes in the second week. Nevertheless, we’re open to surprises come Wednesday.

For Fabio Jakobsen of dsm-firmenich PostNL, this stage could present his first real sprinting opportunity in this Giro. The Dutchman hasn’t had a chance to showcase his sprinting yet but might find his moment here. He's short on support after losing teammates Bram Welten and Tobias Lund Andresen due to illness and a crash.

Other speedy contenders include Alberto Dainese of Tudor and Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious, who consistently competes for top spots. Sprinters like Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla), Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE-Team Emirates), David Dekker (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) also excel on flat finishes. Italian pro-continental riders Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) and Enrico Zanoncello (VF Group-Bardiani) are in the mix too.

There are also men in this Giro who — like Groves — love a tougher stage but are also very fast. Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ), Danny van Poppel (BORA-hansgrohe), Hugo Hofstetter (Israel-Premier Tech), Madis Mikhels (Intermarché-Wanty), Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R) and even the duo Jhonatan Narvaez/ Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) belong in that category.

Does a breakaway have any chance of succeeding? Yes, but it would require several strong riders. Look for Tim van Dijke (Visma | Lease a Bike), Jenthe Biermans (Arkéa - B&B Hotels), Davide Ballerini (Astana) and Lewis Askey (Groupama-FDJ) to potentially make things difficult for the main group.

Favorites stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024, according to IDLProCycling.com

Top favorites: Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

Outsiders: Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step), Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Alberto Dainese (Tudor) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious)

Long shots : Danny van Poppel (BORA-hansgrohe), Madis Mikhels (Intermarché-Wanty), Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R), Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla), Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE-Team Emirates), Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar)

Mayor leads bike tour through Holyoke to spotlight local murals and more

Nearly 50 cyclists, as well as the mayor of Holyoke, gathered in front of the "Father and baby moose" mural found off of Clemente and Crescent streets during a bike tour on Monday, May 13, 2024. Artist Bordalo II and others worked to make the piece a reality as part of a collaboration involving the group Beyond Walls.

Dozens of cyclists and the mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts pedaled through the city’s downtown and canal district this week. It was part of a tour that featured murals, projects and other developments as riders made their way through part of the city’s center.

For a second year, the mayor and a group of bike riders took part in a “Tour de Holyoke” that went from city hall and across the canal to see parts of the city that continue to develop while sporting works of art.

Organized by the city’s Holyoke Biking & Pedestrian Committee , the event featured an hour of bike riding with Mayor Joshua Garcia and other city officials, with special stops to see some of the many murals that gone up in the area over the past few years.

Committee member Kristen Sykes took part in Monday’s ride.

“They're scattered all throughout the city, all the way as far as Holyoke Community College, and it's part of this thing called “Beyond Walls,” and for the last couple years, they've actually been working with artists from all over the world, a lot of really well-known artists, to put together murals in Holyoke and to help highlight the vibrance of the city,” Sykes told WAMC.

The city teamed up with Beyond Walls , a non-profit devoted to bringing art into public spaces.

The end result – a collection of vibrant, bright pieces found along the tour, many designed by Puerto Rican artists that celebrate the heritage found in many of the city’s neighborhoods.

"Iguana-Boina," by the artist Rafique. Found at 363 Main Street in Holyoke.

“A lot of murals in that area, particularly, deal with sort of Latino identity, cultural identity – [there were] images we didn't get to see, of women - really sort of the matriarchy, especially in Latino community – the [mural] of the rooster right by that, so again, sort of highlighting that culture,” said former state representative and current Director of Planning and Economic Development Aaron Vega.

“I think it's important for us to recognize that these neighborhoods have a long history of immigration and migration, but who’s here now and who’s been here for the last 40 years is a strong Latino community,” he said.

Vega also took part in the ride, calling attention to how some of the pieces came together, including “Father and baby moose” off of Clemente and Crescent streets.

The massive piece features the animals standing and spanning multiple floors of a building side, all while incorporating discarded plastic, which pops off from the wall.

"Tun Cutum PA" by artist Don Rimx, found at 147 High Street in Holyoke

The ride also highlighted how bike riding figures into the city’s development plans.

Acknowledging Holyoke has more work to do when it comes to bike accessibility, Mayor Garcia spoke with WAMC while riding, noting that whether it’s by foot or on a bike, investing in pedestrian infrastructure remains a priority.

“One of the things that we have to make sure of as we continue to invest in improving community safety is being sure that we're being mindful of, you know, like, for example, I don't ride bikes regularly, so I don't know the culture - but I have a community that does, and doing these things like this help open up our eyes a little bit,” he said.

One rider who was part of the experience was a Swedish artist who goes by the name “Clark Mountain” and now lives in western Massachusetts.

“It was an extremely exciting experience because you get to see two of the things I love most - I love street art, and graffiti and stuff - I lived in New York for many years, and for me, it's like being back in Brooklyn,” he said. “There’s a lot of similarity from the street art scene to Holyoke, so I love that.”

The ride also provided an opportunity to plug projects under way in South Holyoke and the canal area.

Vega took time to point to various housing developments that have either gone up or are in the process of being built, including the South Holyoke Homes project near Carlos Vega Park, named after his father.

Vega added that housing and attracting companies remain a focus as officials work to build up the city of just under 40,000 people.

“We're looking at companies that are focused on energy production, focused on reducing carbon emissions, and, really, kind of capitalize on the sort of green technologies,” he said. “We're looking at building a lot more housing in Holyoke - not just low-income housing, but all the way through workforce housing and market-rate housing. We want to bring back a community that is walkable, people can work in the community maybe even walk back to work, like they used to back in the day.”
