Dandeli: The adventure land of Karnataka

Sometimes your mind seeks relief and peace from the hustle and bustle of city life. That’s when you might plan a leisurely trip. But in some cases, your mind may need something called an adrenaline rush. Adrenaline is a healthy hormone produced by the body when you indulge in adventure activities. There are numerous benefits of this hormone. It takes you into a heightened state of physical and mental alertness, gives you instant energy, lifts your mood, improves blood circulation, and finally releases all the stress.

Things to do in Dandeli

Okay, enough of Science. But where and how do we get this rush? The answer is Dandeli. Check out the Things to do in Dandeli in this blog! Check out our Dandeli Trip from Bangalore and the Trip from Hyderabad.

Located in Uttara Kannada district, Dandeli is a small river town about 460 Km distance from Bangalore. Uttara Kannada is the northernmost part of Karnataka on the Konkan coast bordering Goa. An overnight journey in a private shuttle takes you to this river town comfortably. The Dandeli wildlife sanctuary is home to varieties of animals including Deer, Sloth Bear, Black Panthers, Elephants, and many species of Birds. It offers a variety of adventure sports like White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Zorbing, Jacuzzi, Trekking, and Camping among others. Let us see what’s special about each of these activities in this blog.

Meanwhile, did you check these amazing Memberships of Muddie ?

Here are 10 reasons why you must take a weekend trip to Dandeli :

White water rafting

Let us start with the best – River Rafting. The thrill you get when you tumble down the foamy white waters of the fast-flowing Kali river is simply extraordinary. You will be seated, along with your co-adventurers, on an inflated boat called a raft boat. An experienced and certified captain will sail your raft. He will initially brief you on basic rafting etiquette, assign your seats on the raft according to your weight, and give you instructions to follow. The big dips your raft jumps across the boulder-strewn riverbed are called “rapids”. Rapids give you the real kick.

People typically go for short rafting which involves a single big rapid. This rapid is repeated 2 or 3 times. Few folks who don’t have time or money constraints would go for long river rafting which typically involves around 15 rapids and takes half a day. This has to be pre-booked. A short river rafting does not need any advance booking. Don’t know swimming? Worry not, you don’t need to know swimming to indulge in river rafting. The raft is designed such that it doesn’t usually capsize. Life jackets are 100% mandatory.

Dandeli Trip

A Kayak is a small, lean, and colorful boat that usually seats a single person. You will be given a paddle with 2 blades to move across freshwater of river Kali. All it takes is just a few minutes for you to learn how to paddle. You will happily move around in whatever direction you want. What makes Kayaking special is the unique setting of the river surrounded by forest. It feels so relaxing and peaceful that you wouldn’t want to come out.

A life jacket is mandatory for Kayaking like for any other sport in Dandeli. A Kayak usually does not capsize. But few naughty folks can intentionally topple their boat just to take a plunge in the water. Now that’s another kind of adventure.

Kayaking Water activities in Dandeli

A traditional Jacuzzi is made in an artificial setting of a hot water bathtub. But at Dandeli, you get natural Jacuzzi because of the flow of water through the rocks. A local expert will take you to a location almost locked between rocks where water rushes with great force. You can put your body parts against this water spring to get a natural freshwater message wherever you want. Head massage? Checked. Back massage? Checked. Jacuzzi stands out among other water sports in Dandeli and is the favorite sport of many. It’s kind of a waterfall created in the middle of the river.

Zorbing, River Crossing, Boating

If you are a ‘touch me not’ kinda person with respect to water, then these are the sports for you.

Zorbing is where you will enter a transparent, inflated globe. The ball floats on the water and rolls around (don’t worry it won’t go with the river as it is tied to a tree). The fun is trying to stand up which is not easy. You will end up imbalancing yourself and falling down. There is a good amount of Oxygen to breathe inside the ball and the activity typically lasts for 10 mins.

In River Crossing, you will be tied to a rope and zipped through from one end to another. Initially, you will climb up a tree to the starting point. Once they make sure your belts are properly buckled, you will be released with good speed across the river. They will teach you how to apply brakes while reaching the other end. You are then escorted back on a boat.

Zorbing Water activities in Dandeli

After you are done with adventure activities, it’s an amazing feeling floating on the water with life jackets, lying flat, stretching your arms and legs, relaxing your body, looking at the blue sky, and hearing birds chirping all around. It’s a great combination of fresh mountain water accompanied by the hot and humid climate of Dandeli. It refreshes you more and more each passing second.

Swimming Water activities in Dandeli

Backwaters sunset

Dandeli has a huge dam built across river Kali originating from western ghats. Water stored in this dam is released for adventure sports and power generation. It forms backwaters. After an action-packed day, you can head to Dandeli backwaters which is a picturesque location for bird watchers. The calm and serene location is ideal to take a lovely stroll, breathing fresh air. This area is also famous for its peaceful sunsets. Make sure you get your profile picture clicked in the backdrop of blue waters, thick green jungle, and the golden yellow evening light of setting sun.

Camping in jungle

An eventful day might have been over, but the night has just begun. This is your third visit to the camp after your morning breakfast and late afternoon Lunch. By now you know your tent and whom you are sharing it with. It’s a properly fenced private property – a homestay cum campsite and well lit up. Enjoy a hot cup of tea and relax for a while. The camp folks will set up a bonfire for your group, and assign you a music system. There are usually no restrictions over there. You can even have your limited drinks or smoke without causing inconvenience to others. The homestay folks will take care of the safety and security of everybody. There is no danger of wild animals inside the campsite premises. Just don’t dare to go for a night walk in the jungle. Make sure you don’t miss early morning hues in the forest. The morning mist accompanied by the rising sun gives another beautiful experience. This time is also ripe for some good selfies. You can compensate for your lack of sleep in the vehicle later.

Delicious food

Konkan is famous for its unique cuisine with delicious varieties of food, both for Veg and Non-veg. The campsites at Dandeli take pride in their food. It has a good amount of coconut, red chilly, and other spices. They serve Chicken in Dinner for nonveg. Veg has good options too at night. Food is usually a buffet system at the campsite. The coconut chutney and sambar for breakfast are something to look forward to.

South Indian Food

Cave exploration

Ulavi is a small remote village perched in the middle of the Dandeli reserve forest cut off from any civilization. It’s just about a 30 min journey from Dandeli town. It offers a great trekking opportunity in the forest to a cave system that has interesting stories behind them. 5 minutes into the trek, you will spot a bird-watching tower set up by the forest department. From here, one can experience cool breeze and birds singing in their natural setting. A 30 minute downhill trek will take you to a cold water spring which has a legend behind it. Your guide will explain this story. Another 20-minute trek will take you to the base of the rock formation that is home to Ulavi caves . It used to be a challenging rock climbing from here. But recently, the villagers and forest department have come together to construct steps and steel ladders to reach the entrance of the caves. You will have to crawl through a tunnel to enter the cave system that has many interconnected chambers. One of these chambers opens up to a vast expanse of dense forest and open sky overlooking a deep valley. This very sight is magnificent and worth all the effort.

Ulavi cave, Cow cave, Akal gavi cave

Beach Bonanza

Having seen the Ulavi caves of Uttara Kannada, you are so close to the Karwar town of the Konkan coast. Karwar does not warrant a separate trip. It’s best to merge it with your Dandeli trip. This border town has many tourist attractions and of course, pretty beaches. The fresh waters of the Kali river will give away to the vast expanses of the Arabian sea. In fact, this is where the Kali river, where you played all the water sports a day before, will have its final journey into the Sea. It’s indeed a double bonanza.

Among the top attractions of Karwar are – Warship museum, River garden, and Karwar beach. This is a relaxing day strolling across tourist spots in the beach town. You can take a dip in the Sea if you wish. Or just put your hat on, remove your slippers and take a stroll on the soft sand. After a lovely sunset, it’s time to say Adieu to everything and set on your return journey towards Bangalore. Don’t forget to exchange your Instagram accounts with your fellow travelers before getting down. An action-packed weekend comes to an end.

Visiting on a budget package trip that was inclusive of transport from Bangalore, we’d had a long night with uncomfortable seating (for sleeping) for 8 hours. We had one hour to freshen up and begin deciding what to do next.

And we couldn’t resist picking the long-range 12 km white water rafting. According to Dandeli.org , it costs Rs. 1350 per person (plus taxes) for the long-range rafting. However, most 3rd party agencies here charge anywhere between Rs. 1700 to even Rs. 2500 for the same.

We paid Rs. 1800 per head, and we didn’t mind it considering someone guiding us throughout and inclusive of transport to the start point.

Now about rafting in Dandeli itself: It’s a perfect start for beginners as the river water is more controlled here with the dam releasing its waters only when necessary.

river rafting in dandeli

I sat in the front row, needing the most strength for paddle and definitely the most adventurous spot. We began in the afternoon heat. Paddling through twigs and rocks, ducking on drops, and drinking water straight from the river – it was the best part of the trip.

12 long kilometres seemed to pass by through slips between our fingers!

Things to do in Dandeli: White water rafting prices

  • Short rafting (20 – 30 mins approx.): Rs. 500 plus taxes.
  • Mid rafting (1 hr approx.): Rs. 1200 plus taxes.
  • Long rafting (2 hrs. approx): Rs. 1350 plus taxes.

*Again, these prices are basic. Third party bookings typically cost higher.

Though I’d heard of trekking here, I didn’t assume it to be so fun. The trek is only 2 hours at a beginner’s level. But the forest canopies and narrow caves throughout made it quite interesting.

The caves were our first stop on day two. The serenity of Dandeli is soothing and frightening at the same time. For first-timers, get a local guide along as the trail can get confusing. In fact, few members of our team got lost for another hour – ultimately adding up to the adventure.

What makes the trek here more thrilling is Dandeli’s wildlife. If you hear loud firecrackers, it’s in alert sign of elephants being close in the area.

Our lost teammates even witnessed a wild boar on their uncharted route! Luckily, everyone returned safely after a dozen of out-of-range calls and panicking.

kavala caves trekking

Supa Dam (and its backwaters)

Things to do in Dandeli: This wasn’t part of our itinerary and neither did we go up the dam’s viewpoint. As for the backwaters, we saw it en route to the rafting start point. However, we had an amazing view of the dam from a bridge as we waited for the rafts to arrive.

Drenched in sweat and rising heat, we sat well while admiring the raw view. The river below, the lushness on either side zigzagging through, and the dam in the backdrop. The bridge trembled every time a vehicle passed over it.

Dandeli Backwaters, like any other backwaters, is the calmer part of the waters with a long curved stretch of road with the forests on one side and the river on the other. No vehicles pass through here, thus making it a wonderful spot for an evening walk with a panoramic view.

Though we passed by it, we didn’t visit the backwaters this time.

Syntheri Rocks

syntheri rocks, things to do in dandeli

Syntheri Rocks is one of those places that’s too popular for a tourist spot, not much to experience, yet you still can’t miss it.

This was our first stop in Dandeli. The flowing waters were at the bottom of the stone pavements with rock walls stretching up to the sky on the other side. Beehives hanging by the rocks added to the scenery.

Visiting in the morning, the place remained cool behind the walls. Apart from the spot’s popularity, the small rapids and the rock formation are all it offers. Though we dipped our feet in the waters, staying away is recommended.

Not to mention, a blunt signboard of the death toll here standing on our way back up to the parking.

Budget homestays , tents, or resorts – a picture of campfire (and fireflies) always pop up in my head. Afterall, that’s most of the place after the countable activities, things to do in Dandeli.

Though Dandeli isn’t known to be a cool region, the nights get chilly with the lush greens. Campfires here make for the calmness. If you’re lucky, with a clear sky of stars too.

campfire in dandeli blog

The only downside to campfires here is that Dandeli isn’t popular among travelers . It’s hard to find people from a backpacker community. Thus, people don’t mingle along. It’s best to experience a campfire when with your own bunch.

Wildlife Safari and Bird Watching

I’ve never been on safari or walked through a bird trail. Nonetheless, Dandeli’s Anshi National Park (or Kali Tiger Reserve) is well-known among bird enthusiasts. It’s best known for the variety of hornbills like the Malabar pied hornbill and Indian grey hornbill.

Also, as the name – Kali Tiger Reserve, suggests there are quite another range of fauna to explore. Black panthers, elephants, tigers, and various reptiles do have their habitats yet rarely come into view.

Fair number of people don’t find the safari worth it as most barely witness any species. But if you’ve made it and have time, you might as well toss a coin and see how luck turns out.

Kulgi Nagzari Valley Trek

The two extreme activities in Dandeli should be river rafting and then trekking. Unlike Kavala Caves where the pathway is prefixed with a ticket counter for the area, these remote treks are guided groups from intermediate difficulty.

There are a handful of routes to choose from in Dandeli and my favorite was the Kulgi Nagzari Valley Trek. I’ve yet to check out the 15 km (8 hours) trek. Here’s a blog by a trekking enthusiast on the same.

best things to do in dandeli

For amateur trekkers, I recommend going along with trusted guide partners. Most offbeat forest routes require official permission to trek. Local guides are usually in touch with the forest department – thus getting the paperworks done without hustle.

Planning an Itinerary

Most visitors to Dandeli only look for a weekend getaway and aren’t from faraway places. Neither are things to do in Dandeli too big for a long trip. At most, 3 days is far enough to plan out all the adventures I mentioned above.

Visiting Dandeli twice and both times staying for 2 days, I’ve never felt the stay duration to be short. I do have to say I skipped on some activities on both occasions.

Speaking of which, here are some tips if you’re looking to fit in most with just a couple of days.

White water rafting : Rafting isn’t always open. Enquire your booked stay or a local about its availability as it depends on the dam water release and current strength. For the long range rafting (12 km) which takes 2 hours ~, keep at least 3 – 4 hours in mind, as it typically takes time to arrange the river raft boats.

Kavala caves can take a couple of hours or even half a day if you get lost. I know from personal experience. Half our team got lost in the forest for a good hour with no source of communication. The caves are quite nice to explore so I’d recommend taking time here.

Syntheri rocks, on the other hand, takes barely an hour.

dandeli things to do kavala

Jungle safari and trekking . Safari is assumed to be 3-4 hours but it depends on the agency you book with. As for trekking, it can range from an hour to even a whole day (like the 8-hour Kulgi Nagzara Valley).

Renting a vehicle

Most importantly, the best way to get around Dandeli is via a private vehicle – preferably a 4-wheeler. Self-driven should also be good if you’ve a good driver along – the roads get pretty curvy and blindsighted at times.

Local chaffeured rental vehicles is the safest in my opinion, except it’s always expensive. Going along with a package trip with transport inclusive throughout the trip from Bangalore, it wasn’t much of a hustle for us. Yeah, we had a tempo of sorts the whole time.

transport in dandeli

Also, plan the itinerary according to distances. For instance, Syntheri Rocks and Kavala Caves are a good 40kms apart by road. Getting around Dandeli takes time. Nor are the visiting places close to one another.

The only exception is you get to visit the Supa Dam backwaters while you head for rafting as its enroute the same path.

Things to do in Dandeli: Tailpiece

Dandeli isn’t popular enough to get people to visit from other states. But for people living in a fair distance (namely Bangalore), it’s a sweet getaway. Rafting is the main selling aspect apart from the forests. For budget travelers with homestays, it takes no more than 7 to 10k per person for 2 days.

From a broad perspective, the town isn’t very commercial . Most resorts and homestays offer package inclusive of meals as there aren’t a great deal of restaurants here. Don’t rely on local shops for basic commodities like soap. They can be hard to find.

Not to mention, everything shuts early around dusk like most tier 3 cities and accommodation don’t generally encourage touring at night. Thus most evenings are bound to be spent around a campfire.

Lucky for us, we had a pool as large as an oversized tub where we couldn’t resist a game of broken water volleyball.

Anyway, that puts in all the things to do in Dandeli without beating around too much (probably).

The Best Time to Visit Dandeli - The Ultimate Guide for Travellers

There are a multitude of reasons to visit Dandeli, although we're sure you have your own motive for choosing this Southern Indian paradise. Bird watching, river rafting and water adventures, wildlife and nature are just a few of the reasons why people visit Dandeli.

However, not all these activities are accessible throughout the year. So, with that in mind, here's our guide to the best times of year to visit Dandeli.

General tips for remaining comfortable:

  • We recommend that each person carries moisturiser, lip balm, mosquito repellent, a Swiss Army knife and a torch at all times during their visit.
  • Of course, we don't need to remind you to carry your chargers, power bank, batteries, hats, sunglasses and a money belt.
  • For your comfort, don't wear clothes that are too loose, and carry a backpack for all your essentials during your exploration.
  • If you're planning to take part in any water sports, don't forget to pack swimwear, too. To keep the wilderness clean, bring reusable bottles and carry a plastic bag.

While the availability of most activities is entirely dependent on climate, bird watching is some what different.

Apart from the weather, there are always other factors that play a major part in how good your experience is going to be.

Let's touch upon bird watching first before we proceed to the best seasons to visit Dandeli.

Bird watching in Dandeli

Bird photography is among the top hobbies for people around India and across the world today. There's nothing like capturing avian life to the backdrop of the setting sun.

But if you aren't aware of typical bird behaviour, getting amazing photographs can be quite tough. Yes, birds have a schedule too!

Feeding time:

Birds tend to indulge in a feeding frenzy in the morning and evening. The birds forage and scout for food for themselves and their offspring.

At sunrise there is usually a flurry of activity as the insects come out of hiding to warm in the sun. In the evening, the birds feed in a frenzy to stay full overnight.

Bird song is a sign:

The melody of birds is a treat for the ears. Think logically, and there's more in it for a bird watcher. The sounds not only indicate the birds' location but also their species, if you or the guide knows their bird songs.

Surprised? Yes, birds like being in the sunshine. This is known as sunning. When the sun is at its peak, around noon, you will find birds doing some weird, yet cute acrobatics as they try to catch the sun as much as possible.

These moves can be perfect for your photography.

Birds drink frequently:

You'll be amazed by how much water birds drink. If your chosen resort has birdbaths, it wouldn't be a bad idea to stake out there. Birds invariably visit birdbaths when it's hot and when they're feeding.

January-February-March: Ideal for bird watching in Dandeli

At this time of year, the weather is ideal for bird watching enthusiasts and trekkers. With the cooler winter setting in, it becomes particularly pleasant to walk through the greenery in search of elusive avian species.

Weather info:

  • January: 14 to 34 degrees Celsius
  • February: 14 to 34 degrees Celsius
  • March: 16 to 35 degrees Celsius

If bird watching is your ultimate objective for visiting Dandeli, January and February are the best months. You'll find a huge variety of birds during this time. Also, the weather is ideal for hiking and trekking.

So, you can simply grab your camera and backpack, and set out for an amazing time in the jungles of Dandeli.

Water can be seen in abundance during this time and it is the best time to visit Dandeli for river rafting. While whitewater rafting is offered during these months, you'll have to note that this activity depends entirely on water levels, which rely on the release of water from the nearby Supa Dam. Water is stored in the Supa Dam for power generation.

Tips for remaining comfortable:

  • Nights can be especially cold during this time.
  • Ensure that you pack enough warm clothing instead of buying them in Dandeli, as finding jackets and sweaters can be tough and time-consuming.
  • Stuff like moisturisers and lip balms can be bought in Dandeli if you forget to pack them.

April-May-June: The Right Time to Visit Dandeli for Wildlife

Summer in Dandeli is the ultimate season for wildlife enthusiasts. The weather is pleasant with fewer crowds, meaning animals confidently venture out of hiding. Perfect for jungle safari & wildlife photography!

  • April: 22 to 39 degrees Celsius
  • May: 21 to 39 degrees Celsius
  • June: 20 to 27 degrees Celsius

Wildlife is always easier to spot when there is less vegetation and the climate is relatively dry. Animals are forced to venture out into the few spots that have an abundance of water.

The skies are clear most of the time, allowing for better visibility. There are also far fewer mosquitoes at this time of year. Since most people visit at the end of the year, the crowds are much thinner, except, of course, if there's a national holiday.

If you plan to venture out in the evening for an open-jeep safari, ensure that you carry warm clothing. As Dandeli is surrounded by dense forest, evenings can be quite cold.

Best Time to Visit Dandeli for River Rafting

For an adventurer, summer in Dandeli brings numerous water sports options. These safe activities are something that even kids love to participate in. Your child will never forget this summer holiday!

If you're an adventure lover, then this is the best season to visit Dandeli. With the River Kali flowing at ideal levels, water sports are the perfect Dandeli experience.

The most popular activities include:

  • River Rafting
  • Natural Jacuzzi
  • Coracle Rides
  • River Crossing
  • Burma Bridge Crossing
  • Visit to Waterfalls

Again, remember that whitewater rafting is entirely dependent on the release of water from the Supa Dam. This is the time when the forest is at its greenest and the weather can be heavenly. You can enjoy the thick forest of Dandeli during these months with a guided hike.

  • You won't need warm clothing once the sun is up, but if you're planning on venturing out during early morning and late evening hours, you should come prepared with some warm clothing.
  • Pack all essentials as shops open rather late during these months.
  • You should also prepare for the occasional surprise rain shower. A waterproof windbreaker or jacket will be enough to keep you safe and dry.
  • Remember, temperatures can drop suddenly with the rain, especially if you're visiting in June.

July-August-September: Bask in the Monsoon Rains in Dandeli

The rains bring an element of romance to the air. Dandeli is ideal for romantic couples and honeymooners. If rekindling the relationship is your objective, the monsoon is the best season! The serene weather and surroundings of Dandeli give cuddling a new meaning!

  • July: 21 to 32 degrees Celsius
  • August: 21 to 33 degrees Celsius
  • September: 21 to 33 degrees Celsius

Enjoying the rains in Dandeli is a pure and poetic experience. Don't confine yourself to the four walls of your home during the rains.

Rains bring lush greenery to Dandeli, which is an amazing feast for your eyes. Awaken your sense of adventure, get out of your monsoon slumber and set a course for Dandeli.

There are several adventures that await you, such as:

  • Whitewater Rafting
  • Monsoon Cycling
  • Monsoon Camping
  • Jungle Safari

Drive to Dandeli with your loved one and experience a monsoon adventure with a hint of romance. You'll love indulging in these activities as a couple.

  • Don't forget to pack waterproof jackets/ponchos.
  • Raincoats and umbrellas can be quite irritating and will not protect your backpacks adequately.
  • Long boots along with ponchos will keep you comfortable throughout your watery escapades.
  • Mosquito repellent creams will also be helpful when you venture out.

October-November-December: Best Season to Visit Dandeli for Everything

If you're looking to spend some quality family time during the festive holidays, Dandeli is the ideal location for you. This is also the time when nature and weather are at their best in the region.

  • October: 20 to 33 degrees Celsius
  • November: 20 to 33 degrees Celsius
  • December: 14 to 33 degrees Celsius

This is the time when Dandeli is at its best for visitors. You can indulge in almost all the activities mentioned above. The climate is perfect for exploring the wildlife and seeing the sites around Dandeli.

Several exotic birds make Dandeli their home during the months of October and November.

  • The weather is extremely pleasant during this time, but that doesn't mean you should throw caution to the wind.
  • Come prepared with a warm jacket if you're visiting in December, it'll come in handy on your open-jeep safari.
  • Torches can be very useful as days are shorter during these months.

There are also several sites around Dandeli which you can visit during any time of the year. You'll never find a dull moment when you visit this natural splendour.
