PINK FLOYD Legend DAVID GILMOUR Announces First Solo Album Of New Material In Nine Years

David Gilmour today announced his new album "Luck And Strange" , to be released on September 6 via Sony Music . The first track from the album, "The Piper's Call" , will be released this Thursday, April 25, following a world exclusive first play on the BBC Radio 2 "Breakfast Show" .

"Luck And Strange" was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour 's first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew , best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman . Of this new working relationship, David says: "We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, 'Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?' and 'Do they all fade out? Can't some of them just end?' He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He's very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you."

The majority of the album's lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson , Gilmour 's co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on "Luck And Strange" : "It's written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant." Gilmour elaborates: "We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things." Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating: "He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who's playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason."

The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of THE MONTGOLFIER BROTHERS ' "Between Two Points" and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn .

Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts , Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner . The title track also features the late PINK FLOYD keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David 's house.

Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on "Between Two Points" . Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals.

The album's cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn , is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album's final song "Scattered" .

Of working with his family on "Luck And Strange" , David says: " Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the 'Von Trapped' live streams showed the great blend of Romany 's voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I'd felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy."

Gilmour is guitarist, vocalist and writer with PINK FLOYD , but is also renowned for his solo work. Gilmour and Roger "Syd" Barrett met as children in Cambridge, U.K., and later began playing guitar together. In 1965 Syd co-founded PINK FLOYD , while David continued playing with a succession of his own bands. In 1968, David was asked to augment the PINK FLOYD lineup as the singer and guitarist, only for Syd to leave the group five gigs later. David 's guitar playing, singing and songwriting became major factors of PINK FLOYD 's worldwide success, including his distinctive vocals and guitar playing on "The Dark Side Of The Moon" , the third most successful album of all time.

In 1978, David released his first solo album, "David Gilmour" , which charted in the U.K. and the U.S. His second solo album, "About Face" , was released in 1984, again hitting the Top 20 in the U.K.

David assumed control of PINK FLOYD in 1985, creating the new FLOYD album "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" with Richard Wright and Nick Mason . It was followed in 1994 by "The Division Bell" , which contained the instrumental "Marooned" , composed by David and Richard Wright , which won a Grammy Award . Both albums charted at No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic and were supported by sell-out world tours.

In 1996, PINK FLOYD were inducted into the U.S. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , followed by the same honor in the U.K. in November 2005.

David is one of the all-time guitar greats, with an instinctive and distinctive sound; he was voted "Best Fender Guitar Player Ever" in a poll in Guitarist magazine, beating such greats as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton . In 2005, David was made a CBE for services to music.

On March 6, 2006, David released his third solo album, "On An Island" , which entered the U.K. chart at No. 1, subsequently hitting the top position in the pan-European Charts, as well as hitting multi-platinum around the world. The tour for the album included a one-off performance in the historic dockyards of Gdańsk, Poland, with a 40-piece orchestra and a show at London's Royal Albert Hall was filmed by director David Mallet and released in 2007 as "Remember That Night - Live At The Royal Albert Hall" , which topped the charts upon release.

In May 2008, David was awarded an "Ivor" for Lifetime Achievement by the British Association of Composers and Songwriters. In September 2008, Fender Guitars made available their David Gilmour Signature Black Strat model, in "Relic" and "New Old Stock" models.

In 2009, David was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from East Anglia's Ruskin University of Cambridge and Chelmsford for his outstanding contribution to music as a writer, performer and innovator.

In September 2014, PINK FLOYD released "The Endless River" , and David confirmed that it would be the band's final album and it topped the charts in over 20 countries.

David 's next album "Rattle That Lock" was released in 2015 and went to No. 1 in 13 charts around the world and No. 2 in a further eight, hitting the Top 5 in a total of 25 listings. The accompanying world tour saw David perform two spectacular shows at the legendary Pompeii Amphitheatre in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, 45 years after he first played there for Adrian Maben 's classic film "Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii" .

The concerts were the first-ever rock performances played to an audience in the ancient Roman amphitheatre, which was built in 90 BC and entombed in ash when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. The film of these shows directed by Gavin Elder , topped the box office In Italy, Germany and France and was No. 2 in the U.K. "David Gilmour Live At Pompeii" was released on Blu-ray, vinyl, CD and DVD in September 2017 and reached No. 3 in the U.K. and No. 1 in Italy.

In June 2019, David raised $21.5 million from the Christie's sale of more than 120 of his instruments and artefacts. He gave the proceeds to ClientEarth , a charity which uses the power of the law to protect the planet and its people.

Gilmour and Nick Mason reactivated PINK FLOYD to record "Hey Hey Rise Up" on March 30, 2022 with Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band BOOMBOX . All of the net proceeds have gone to charities to help alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian people.

The Gilmour Project Announce 2022 Tour Dates

david gilmour tour 2022 france

All-Star Band Explores The Music of David Gilmour’s Pink Floyd; Exclusive 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Original 1972 Tour ‘ Dark Side of The Moon : A Piece For Assorted Lunatics.’

The Gilmour Project will celebrate the exact & actual 50th Anniversary of ‘Dark Side Of The Moon: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics,’ which Pink Floyd first performed in January, 1972 at The Brighton Dome, UK, a full 14 months before the release of the legendary album, with a coast-to-coast, US tour in January, 2022. They will perform and explore this masterwork in its entirety as ‘Dark Side Of The Moon, Pieces For Assorted Lunatics,’ honoring the legendary band. With their focus on David Gilmour’s Pink Floyd repertoire, The Gilmour Project will do a deep dive into the exploration & improvisation that only Gilmour could create. This rendition certainly does not dismiss the iconic contributions of all 5 historic musicians that comprise the Pink Floyd complement, only to bring light to philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative art, and of course, elaborate live shows.

The Gilmour Project incorporates musicians whose background is both prog(ressive) improvisational; and, is the only band since Blue Floyd in 2000, endeavoring to take these songs ‘OUT,’ speaking in jazz protocol, without disregarding the cherished classic hooks, licks & musical phrases. Acclaimed musicians Jeff Pevar (lead guitar with CSN, David Crosby, Phil Lesh, Ray Charles), Kasim Sulton (bass & vocals with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, Meatloaf, Blue Oyster Cult, Hall & Oates, Cheap Trick & Patti Smith), Prairie Prince (co-founder of The Tubes, & drums with Todd Rundgren, Jefferson Starship , Phil Lesh), Mark Karan (guitar & vocals with Bob Weir, RatDog, The Other Ones), and Scott Guberman (keyboard & vocals with Phil Lesh), will take the music of David Gilmour & Pink Floyd to places it has never gone before.

Blue Floyd was formed in January 2000, at the dawn of the 21st Century, taking full advantage of the then ‘new’ thing they called social media. A conglomeration of top-notch players from other bands came together to spread this music marked by the use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows. International tape collectors codifying the band’s utter brilliance, created an enduring mystique apart from & in contrast to the tribute band phenomenon.

The improvisational ‘jam gestalt’ of the legendary Blue Floyd, which both Pevar & Prince performed with, matched with Pink Floyd deep tracks, hits and fan favorites, including solo Gilmour gems, and accompanied by ‘Floydian’ audio FX from Paul Simon producer ‘The Duke of New York’ (Graceland: The Remixes) gives you none other than The Gilmour Project.

The band will have its live stream debut on June 24th from The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. JUNE 24 STREAM LINK: aftontickets.com/thegilmourproject

David Gilmour (born March 6, 1946) is a revered British guitarist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Cambridge, England, UK. On top of being a successful solo artist, Gilmour is best known as the guitarist and co-vocalist in the seminal progressive rock band Pink Floyd.

Encouraged by his parents to pursue music, Gilmour took an early interest in the sounds of Bill Haley, Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers. Before long Gilmour began practicing the guitar, later meeting future Pink Floyd members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. The singer-songwriter went on to busk around France and Spain with Barrett in 1965 in a tumultuous period for Gilmour. By 1967 he had been invited to join Pink Floyd and along with Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, made musical history selling over 250 million records worldwide. After Barrett’s departure from the band in 1968 Gilmour provided lead vocals notably on the albums “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here”.

10 years later, in an attempt to utilise all of his musical and songwriting talents, Gilmour turned his attention to recording a solo album. The 1978 self-titled release, marked by its bluesy, guitar-driven sound, earned strong reviews from critics and peaked at No. 17 in the UK. Gilmour’s sophomore album “About Face” was released in 1984 and became a tool to distance himself away from Pink Floyd and provide a commentary for his thoughts. In 1987 Gilmour took complete control of Pink Floyd with the departure of Roger Waters which resulted in “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” in 1987 and “The Division Bell” in 1994.

In 2005 Gilmour was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to music, after which he released his third solo album “On an Island” in 2006. The live album “Live in Gdansk” appeared in 2010 followed by a collaborated with the electronic outfit the Orb on the album “Metallic Spheres”. A year later Rolling Stone magazine ranked him the 14th best guitarist of all time.

Live reviews

David Gilmour - what can you write about such a name? A concert with the singer and guitarist of one of the most famous rock bands in the world - Pink Floyd - is an event that you will never forget and that you should never miss.

Although David Gilmour is now an old grey-haired man, his voice still sounds like it did in the best Pink Floyd days. Live, his rendition of arguably their most famous song "Wish You Were Here", is performed in such a powerful way, that you'd think time had stopped for some decades. Together with piano and strings this song is unforgettable live.

I can't imagine what it would have been like back in the day. Another song that was worth the long, long journey to hear it live was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Especially in the acoustic version - it is unbelievable what Gilmour made out of this old classic. He started with a neverending intro morphing the song so that only experts in the audience recognized it from the initial strains.

All in all I can give everybody the tip to use the chance to go to a David Gilmour concert - You never know when it will be his last one. Forget songs like "The Wall" - these songs were made during a time Fink Floyd was successful - too successful in my eyes. The good songs were their earlier ones. And in concert, Gilmour reminded us of this fact.

David Jon Gilmour, CBE may not be a recognisable household name yet you only have to mention the name of his world famous band Pink Floyd and people suddenly realise David's importance to the genres of progressive and psychedelic rock.

Although this musician is considered one of the world's greatest guitarist by a number of celebrated publications, you really do have to watch him perform live in order to appreciate his musical talents. Although Gilmour is almost 70 years old, he does not miss one of those perfect notes all evening. Beginning with the spanning 'Breathe' followed by 'Time' he manages to hold the entire venue's attention with the simple movement of his guitar strings. The vocal also sounds really good considering that David was never a major vocalist in the original lineup. This is a fantastic way to hear the likes of 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Astronomy Domine' as Pink Floyd rarely tour anymore as a whole outfit. The addition of an orchestra gives a new dimension to the classic music and offers a new level of show to the whole operation.

The first Concert in Rome of the legendary guitar of Pink Floyd has been one of best live shows I've ever seen. The Playlist was incredible, ranging from the last tracks of Rattle That Lock up to the wonderful dreamy Fat Old Sun from "Atom Heart Mother".

The set of guitars Gilmour used included the relic sunburst Telecaster famous after his solo album "About Face", his Lap Steel, a blonde Gibson LA and the absolute rock legend "The Black Strat".

The dozen of guitar solos David played had his un-comparable taste and feeling. The second solo of Comfortably Numb, the best song in the human history, concluded the best event held in Rome for decades.

Thank you David for your art!

The concert was perfect. Gilmour is still able to sing like he's always sang. My problem was with the venue, eventhough the sound was amazing and much better than other venues, the entrance to the event was a total disaster. Without no particular reason, the security team kept us and almost have of the public, outside on line for more than half an hour, for we missed the first 5 songs, eventhough we arrived there before 8pm. I'd think twice going back to Radio City Music Hall for attending a concert there, and if so, we'd be sure to be there 2 hours ahead of the gig, to make sure we don't miss 30% of the show....

Thumbs down for Radio City security team!

Show espetacular.

The performance was awesome and that was what I was waiting for.

He played a mix of his and Pink Floyd's songs but I wish more visual effects on the big screen behind the stage. It showed movies only on some specific songs and not on all of them.

The ticket selling process was awful and I don't know if here is the right place to complain or not. We got three different place in three different tries for buying the tickets and the black market was huge outside the venue, and also many many fake tickets. The ID was supposed to be checked by the entrance but no one cared about it, funny!

5 Star Show all the way! One of the best shows I've ever seen. Sound was perfect, stage show was great and venue was ideal. He is the closest thing to the original Pink Floyd sound and feel as there original shows. I've seen the Wall Tour a few years back and this is what I've been missing all these years in my concert going experiences. This is one I will never forget and my buddies who didn't go are still kicking themselves! Best of wishes to David and his crew what a show!

Simply fantastic... he is not from this world. Worth every penny. Unforgettable show...perfectly produced...technically irretouchable. David Gilmour and his crew made me travel to the past through the classics Us and Then, Wish You Were Here, High Hopes, Astronomy Domine to the recent Girl on the Yellow Dress and Rattle that Lock to quote a few songs. If you have the opportunity and love Pink Ployd like me, you cannot miss this show...it will forever be in my mind...

Great show, started off a little slow but the fourth song was "Wish you were here" and that got the crowd going.

Very good sound quality, some excellent Gilmour solos, if you are a fan of great guitar playing don't miss David Gilmour and his Black Strat.

Finished off with a wonderful rendition of Comfortably Numb. It would be nice if he interacted with the crowd, more, there was very little crowd interaction.

Acclaimed musicians Jeff Pevar (lead guitar with CSN, David Crosby, Phil Lesh, Ray Charles), Kasim Sulton (bass & vocals with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, Meatloaf, Blue Oyster Cult, Hall & Oates, Cheap Trick & Patti Smith), Prairie Prince (co-founder of The Tubes, & drums with Todd Rundgren, Jefferson Starship, Phil Lesh), Mark Karan (guitar & vocals with Bob Weir, RatDog, The Other Ones), and Scott Guberman (keyboard & vocals with Phil Lesh), will take the music of David Gilmour & Pink Floyd to places it has never gone before.

David Gilmour Returns After 9 Years With ‘Luck and Strange’

David Gilmour is back with his first solo album in nearly a decade. Luck and Strange is due on Sept. 6, and will be advanced by the single "The Piper's Call" on Thursday.

His late Pink Floyd bandmate Richard Wright appears on the title track, which makes use of elements from a 2007 jam at Gilmour's house. But Luck and Strange was initially defined by the more recent quarantine era.

"It's written from the point of view of being older. Mortality is the constant," Gilmour's wife and lyrical collaborator Polly Samson said in an official statement. Gilmour added: "We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things."

Luck and Strange is available for preorder now . The artwork and complete track listing, along with bonus tracks, can be found below. Included are eight new songs and a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers' "Between Two Points."

Charlie Andrew takes over as co-producer on Luck and Strange , after Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music helped with Gilmour's most recent pair of solo projects. Andrew is best known for collaborations with the alternative artists ALT-J and Marika Hackman.

Gilmour said Andrew brought an exciting new perspective to the sessions: "He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine," Gilmour said. "He's very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you."

Andrew also creatively challenged the long-standing songwriting duo. "He wants to know what the songs are about," Samson said. "He wants everyone who's playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason."

Gilmour had hinted at the prospect of new music earlier this week on social media channels. In his first post since New Year's Day, Gilmour could be found playing guitar in the studio – before stopping abruptly to say, " I'm ready ."

Featured contributors include frequent Pink Floyd collaborator Guy Pratt, Steve Gadd and Roger Eno, among others. The cover image is by Anton Corbijn, best known for U2 's The Joshua Tree , and was inspired by a lyric written by son Charlie for the album's final song, "Scattered."

That's not the only personal connection: Romany Gilmour is featured on harp, while handling lead vocals on "Between Two Points." Gabriel Gilmour sings backing vocals. Elements of the album were also derived from pandemic-era live streams that Gilmour and family members performed in 2020 and 2021.

"Polly and I have been writing together for over 30 years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany's voice and harp-playing," Gilmour said, "and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I'd felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy."

New David Gilmour LP Follows Lengthy Hiatus

News about Luck and Strange began trickling out years ago. Polly Samson confirmed that sessions were underway back in 2022 during an interview with a Romanian publication . She's been sharing photos on Instagram showing Gilmour in the studio, as well.

His most recent solo album was 2015's Rattle That Lock . An international Top 5 hit, the LP became Gilmour's second consecutive U.K. No. 1, following 2006's On an Island . Otherwise, he's only issued a pair of stand-alone singles, 2020's " Yes, I Have Ghosts " and 2022's " Hey, Hey, Rise Up. " "Yes, I Have Ghosts" will be included as a bonus track on the compact-disc version of Luck and Strange .

"Hey, Hey, Rise Up" actually arrived under the Pink Floyd banner as a benefit single for war-torn Ukraine. Gilmour noted, however, that he wasn't getting the band back together. "I thought this could be something that we use our platform for, for enormous good," Gilmour later argued . "When I spoke to [former bandmate] Nick [Mason] and he said he was willing to do it as Pink Floyd, it seemed like a no-brainer."

In the meantime, Gilmour could be heard on the career-spanning Live at Pompeii concert recording in 2017, the belated remix of Pink Floyd's Animals in 2022, and an expanded 2023 reimagining of his collaboration with the Orb titled Metallic Spheres in Colour .

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on the Band Touring Again: “I Suppose it’s a Possibility”

by Jacob Uitti May 13, 2022, 8:59 am

Last month, the famous psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd reunited for the song, “Hey Hey Rise Up,” which was a single they put together for charity to benefit the people of Ukraine as the country battles Russia in war.

Videos by American Songwriter

The new song was the first original work since the 1994 album The Division Bell .

In the wake of the release, the band’s guitarist David Gilmour has hinted maybe—just maybe—the band will get back together to tour. At least, he hasn’t taken it completely off the table.

“We haven’t even thought about doing live shows, but I suppose it’s a possibility,” said Gilmour in a recent interview. “I haven’t done one in such a long time, but who knows – I don’t know.”

In March last year, Gilmour said that he was “done” with the band. But things change, of course.

“I’ve had a life in Pink Floyd for quite a lot of years, and quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger [Waters],” Gilmour told Guitar Player . “And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95 percent musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter.”

He added, “It has run its course. We are done, and it would be fakery to go back and do it again.”

However, if Gilmour and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who are the two remaining members of the band, do come back, it may likely be without Roger Waters. In 2021, Waters said the band was “toxic” during his 20-year tenure between 1965 and 1985.

“I always felt insignificant and somewhat inept,” Waters told Marc Maron on his WTF Podcast last September. “It’s more recently, over the years, I’ve come to realize that actually, I have quite a sophisticated musical brain. That I notice things that other people don’t notice.”

Waters continued, saying that Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright were “always trying to drag me down” and “trying to knock me off whatever that perch was.”

Officially, the band played their last live show in 1994. Though, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright were joined by Waters for an 18-minute set in 2005.

Waters has his own live tour dates coming up this summer, which you can see HERE .

David Gilmour to Release New Album, ‘Luck and Strange,’ This Fall

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Nearly a decade since the release of his last solo album, David Gilmour will return with a new full-length, Luck and Strange , this fall. The former Pink Floyd singer and guitarist will release the record’s first single, “The Piper’s Call,” on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Thursday; a music video will follow on Friday. The album will arrive on Sept. 6.

Gilmour recorded and co-produced the album, which follows 2015’s Rattle That Lock , over five months in Brighton, England, and London with producer Charlie Andrew , whose credits include releases by Alt-J, Marika Hackman, and Wolf Alice. It contains eight new original songs and a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers’ song from 1999, “Between Two Points.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics are by Gilmour’s wife and longtime collaborator, author Polly Samson , who said in a statement that she appreciated Andrew wanting to know what the songs were about and relaying the messages to the musicians who played on the album.

“It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant,” Samson said.

“We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things,” Gilmour said.

Gilmour said he found Andrew’s approach both startling and refreshing. “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos and said things like, ‘Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?’ and ‘Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?'” he said. “He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The Gilmours’ son, Charlie, contributed to the lyrics of “Scattered,” and their daughter, Romany, plays harp and sings lead vocals on “Between Two Points.” Their son, Gabriel Gilmour, also contributes backing vocals. The family contributions on the album stemmed from livestreams the Gilmours made during Covid-19 lockdowns, which they billed as the Von Trapped Family.

“Polly and I have been writing together for over 30 years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy,” Gilmour said.

The backing band includes bassist Guy Pratt, who played on Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell and Gilmour’s recent solo releases. Other musicians who contributed to Luck and Strange include bassist Tom Herbert, drummers Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao, and keyboardists Rob Gentry and Roger Eno.

Keyboards recorded by Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright, who died in 2008, feature on the title track; he and Gilmour recorded them during a barn jam at Gilmour’s house in 2007.

The album, which features photography and design by Anton Corbijn, will be available in a variety of formats including digitally and on vinyl, CD, and Blu-ray. The latter two releases feature the bonus tracks “Yes, I Have Ghosts” and the original barn jam of “Luck and Strange.” The Blu-ray, which is audio only, adds orchestral versions of “A Single Spark” and “Scattered”; it also presents the album in high-res stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes.

In 2022, Gilmour reunited with Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and Pratt to record a new Pink Floyd song, “Hey Hey Rise Up,” which featured vocals by Ukrainian singer-turned-soldier Andriy Khlyvnyuk. The song raised money to benefit charities that helped Ukrainians after the outbreak of Russia’s invasion.

In an interview with Rolling Stone a year earlier, Gilmour and Samson said they’d just begun formulating ideas for a new album. “There’s a number of things that come from before this whole period, from before my last album, which are the things that I’m playing with to some extent, as well as some new music, too, to get myself back into the mood for work,” he said.

Luck and Strange track list:

1. “Black Cat” 2. “Luck and Strange” 3. “The Piper’s Call” 4. “A Single Spark” 5. “Vita Brevis” 6. “Between Two Points” 7. “Dark and Velvet Nights” 8. “Sings” 9. “Scattered”

Bonus tracks:

10. “Yes, I Have Ghosts” 11. “Luck and Strange (Original Barn Jam)”

Hey Hey Rise Up 2022

It was do doubt a big surprise to all to not only see a new single from David Gilmour but also that he chose to do so under the Pink Floyd banner. In this feature we’ll look at David Gilmour’s gear used on the new track Hey Hey Rise Up.

Since Christmas 2021, David’s wife, Polly Samson, has been posting pictures from what appears to be recording sessions. David is playing a variety of guitars and piano, with members of his family and Guy Pratt, Pink Floyd’s bassist since the mid 80s, has also been present.

These sessions seem to have had no relation to the sudden announcement and release of Pink Floyd’s new single, Hey Hey Rise Up, which also feature Nick Mason on drums. Recent pictures from David’s recording studio, showing what appears to be a list of song working titles or references, has also sparked rumours of a new album.

Hey Hey Rise Up was recorded at David Gilmour’s barn studio in Sussex, England in late March and early April 2022. Although the video footage isn’t synced with most of the sound, based on the audio and mix, it appears that the band was recorded live, with additional overdubs and possible retakes done in the studio later that same day. This was also confirmed by Guy Pratt in a recent episode of his podcast Rockonteurs .

Note: There are no confirmed sources on what David might have used for effects. The PC MkI was used for the performance and it is seen on studio footage from the recording. He might have used other effects too. Either pedals or in post production.

Pete Cornish All Tubes MKI pedal board

The pedal board dates from 1999 and was requested by David to be used for future guest appearances etc. The board featured Cornish custom tube preamps between each effect to ensure minimum signal loss. It could also perform in both stereo and mono.

Additionally the board was designed not to allow two distortion pedals to be engaged at once, only distortion+overdrive. The board was brought on a backup on the On an Island 2006 tour and later used for 2010 guest appearances.

It is not known whether the board has been modified either prior to or for the session. Footage suggests that it is the same number of effects, although it appear to be some new markings or notes glued to the board.

Guitars and amps

Fender Esquire – Fender Custom Shop 1955 Esquire replica Acoustic steel string

Alessandro tube head Alessandro 2×12” speaker cabinet

Note: David is seen having at least three Alessandro amp heads in his studios combined. It’s not confirmed what model he is using at this performance and recording, although it appears to be either a Redbone Special or Bluetick Coonhound.

The Alessandro amp is used for the performance and seen in David’s studio during the recording session, which indicates that it was used for the sessions. David might have used other amps as well.

The Fender Custom Shop Esquire

David is playing a replica of his old 1955 Fender Esquire – often referred to as the Workmate after Black and Decker’s work bench. The replica was featured on the 2017 Pink Floyd Exhibition and presumably ordered by David for display. David is also seen playing the replica at the Richard Thompson 70th Anniversary gig at Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, on September 30th 2019.

david gilmour tour 2022 france

David is wearing the Jimi Hendrix strap he got from his wife, Polly, for his 60th birthday in March 2006. The strap has until recently been used exclusively with the Black Strat, which was sold at the 2019 Christie’s auction. David wore the strap at the Richard Thompson gig mentioned above.

Thoughts on the guitar solo

The guitar solo can be divided into three parts. One and three sounds to me like it’s the bridge pickup, possibly with a Tube Driver and a Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker on slow speed. It’s that boxy, almost hollow character of a rotary speaker on slow setting. The Yamaha, with teh Alembic F-2B preamp, is also seen in his studio during the session.

The second part of the solo sounds to me like it’s the neck pickup, with compression and a Tube Driver. Compression can be tricky to determine, as it most certainly added in the mix but it could be a pedal in addition to that too.

David Gilmour Luck and Strange

David Gilmour has announced his new album ‘Luck and Strange’, to be released on 6th September on Sony Music.

'Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with alt-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on ‘Luck and Strange’, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating, “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’ and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house. Some contributions emerged from the live streams that Gilmour and family performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; Romany Gilmour sings, plays the harp and appears on lead vocals on ‘Between Two Points’. Gabriel Gilmour also sings backing vocals. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by Anton Corbijn, is inspired by a lyric written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Of working with his family on ‘Luck and Strange’, David says, “Polly and I have been writing together for over thirty years and the Von Trapped live streams showed the great blend of Romany’s voice and harp-playing and that led us into a feeling of discarding some of the past that I’d felt bound to and that I could throw those rules out and do whatever I felt like doing, and that has been such a joy.” Luck and Strange 1.
