In His Next Magic Show, Derren Brown Will Be Invisible

Brown is the co-director of “Unbelievable,” opening in London, but he won’t be onstage. Nor will any other professional magicians.

Derren Brown sits on a staircase, his left hand holding his head and looking into the camera.

By Claire Moses

Reporting from London

After decades of stage shows, TV specials and essentially reinventing mind control , Derren Brown is doing something new: He’s getting off the stage, and into the director’s chair.

And “it’s been a lot,” Brown said in a recent video interview.

“ Unbelievable ,” directed by Brown and his longtime collaborators Andrew O’Connor and Andy Nyman, opens on Tuesday in London’s West End, and is a family-friendly magic show the likes of which its makers promise you’ve never seen.

It’s also a new kind of Derren Brown show. Previously, Brown, 52, has been at the center of his productions. Brown has long maintained that he is not a psychic, but that his mind tricks are a combination of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship. He has managed to convince people to commit an armed robbery (with fake weapons, of course); to take a bullet for someone (also staged); and that he has healing powers .

This time, Brown said that creating a magic show using actors and musicians directed by him, O’Connor and Nyman “just felt like a really appealing idea .”

The change also seemed to come at the right time for Brown. After a 2019 Broadway run , followed by a post-pandemic run of his show “Derren Brown: Showman,” which ended in the West End in March, and working on “Unbelievable” at the same time, Brown said he felt burned out for the first time in his life. “I don’t think any of us had it in us to write another show for me,” Brown said of him and his collaborators.

Creatively, too, Brown said that he thought directing would feel different and challenging: “It felt like it’d be very liberating.”

It both has and hasn’t been, he said.

The liberating part is that he will not have to be onstage every night once the show is up and running. He will be able to see performances with friends, for example.

But his new role as director, alongside two collaborators with a lot of experience directing, has induced a bit of impostor syndrome. “I’m not naturally one to speak up in a room,” he said.

Feeling not quite good enough is a common experience, but one people are often hesitant to talk about. The insecurities that get filtered out on Instagram — which Brown described as a “curated theater of triumph” — are part of what makes us human.

That thought is at the center of “Unbelievable.” “We make the mistake of comparing our insides to other people’s outsides,” Brown said. “That’s what this show is ultimately about.”

“Unbelievable” is a magic show without professional magicians, and some of the seven-person cast are making their West End debuts. The result is what Brown called a production without ego. There is no lead role.

Musicians are used to rehearsing and repeating, which helps when learning magic tricks. In general, because most of the cast members did not have a background in magic, they approached the material with an open mind and did not have to unlearn habits, the show creators said.

“I was worried that if you saw people you knew weren’t professional magicians, would you not buy into them?” Brown said. But he found the opposite to be true, saying that it showed the humanity and vulnerability of the performers.

People who go to a performance want to connect with another person, Brown said: “What you’re there for is not what it says on the bill.”

“Sharing in their struggles is part of that,” he added.

The road from inception to the stage has been a long one for “Unbelievable,” and was interrupted by the pandemic. “It’s been in our heads for five years,” Nyman, who has directed many of Brown’s shows and is also co-directing “Unbelievable,” said.

Audiences can expect some familiar aspects of Brown’s magic, but it may end up feeling very different. “There are points of it that are very me, just in terms of the types of magic , ” Brown said. But having other people perform the tricks will change the flavor.

There will be a lot of audience participation, though Brown said he did not want to make participation feel in any way mandatory: “I’d hate to be dragged on the stage.”

In past shows, Brown has thrown Frisbees to choose who’d be coming up in front of the audience, with the idea that someone who doesn’t want to participate can simply hand the Frisbee to their neighbor.

For “Unbelievable,” the directors are doing something different. When buying a ticket, people can tick a box that asks them whether or not they want to be part of the show.

In the second half of the show, O’Connor said, “We pull out little chips with names on them. One person gets chosen and they have this big experience.”

He didn’t go into any more detail to avoid any spoilers, but said that it was not “dark or difficult,” which might have been expected from Brown’s other shows.

What audiences can expect, Nyman said, is an emotional journey.

“I love theater,” Nyman said. “It’s essential to me that what an audience comes away with on a Derren show and on ‘Unbelievable’ is a properly crafted piece of theater that takes them on a full journey.”

Derren Brown: Showman review – a performance that will blow your mind

Apollo theatre, London The veteran illusionist outdoes himself with an evening of bewildering trickery that holds a mirror to our deepest feelings

H aving followed his stage work for years, I find it hard to take a word Derren Brown says seriously. That’s not a criticism: if his lips are moving, I assume there’s devious misdirection afoot, or some hokum designed to dramatise the next feat of jaw-dropping magic and mesmerism. But my scepticism makes things tricky when Brown moves into the territory of real feeling: love, loss, bereavement. Does he belong there? I felt a little uncertain as he conjured with the most delicate feelings of one or two audience members – and indeed with his own.

Sworn as we are to secrecy at the end, I shouldn’t elaborate – save to say that Brown negotiates adroitly the unease generated when trickery and tender hearts come together. And he does so in the service of another fantastic show, his first in the UK for five years. Is it more amazing than those he has delivered before ? There’s a coup in the closing moments so mindblowing, so laser-guided, to undermine the hold-out scepticism of an unbeliever like me, that I ended up feeling he had surpassed even himself. With Brown and his co-creators Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor, we really are in the presence of masters.

What Brown wishes to demonstrate tonight, as he riffs on fathers, filial love and interpersonal relationships, is how connected we all are, even when we feel isolated. One could question how well his routines enact that conceit while still marvelling at those volunteers hexed into forgetting their own names, or at the punter performing complex tricks under hypnosis that he incredulously denies when woken up. Elsewhere, Brown outsources the telepathy to another audience stooge, apparently fast-tracked to black belt-level mentalism by some mysterious process backstage.

Improbable? I’d say. Inexplicable. Usually, yes, give or take one or two familiar stunts at which I might hazard – but only hazard – a guess. You end up, as ever, completely confounded by Brown’s combination of seamless stage magic and eerie ability to read and manipulate human beings – with a touching emotional pay-off, too.

At the Apollo theatre, London , until 18 March

'Derren Brown Presents – Unbelievable' review – astonishing feats of mental wizardry

Read our three-star review of new magic show Derren Brown Presents – Unbelievable , now in performances at the Criterion Theatre to 7 April 2024.

Matt Wolf

Derren Brown is passing the baton and also widening his reach. That’s an immediate explanation for his latest West End show Unbelievable , in which the superstar mentalist proves that his gasp-inducing assemblage of tricks can indeed be taught.

And so we find an eclectic cast, headed by musicals regular Simon Lipkin, inheriting the mantle and leaving the public asking after the performance just how one or another onstage feat of mental wizardry was possibly accomplished. Brown doesn't appear in the show but it bears evidence of his brand at every turn.

How, for instance, could Hannah Price intuit so much from a laying on of hands on the part of a randomly selected public who gather by her at the piano, resting their palms on her shoulder?

That feat of musical telepathy is characteristic of the long-established milieu of a showbiz phenomenon whose acolytes can here gauge the exact amount of change belonging to Emma, seated up in the dress circle. And who know what are various audience members’ preferred beverages – the very same people who then are astonished to find themselves nursing a (free) Bailey’s, which is nothing to sneeze at given extortionate bar prices these days.

The show was co-written and directed by Brown and his longterm collaborator Andy Nyman (the Menier’s terrific Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof ), along with Andrew O’Connor who conceived the venture. Special credit is surely due Jim Steinmeyer’s illusion design, which keeps things visually buoyant even as the production reaches into a third hour: as is sometimes the case with Brown’s work, the odd trim wouldn’t go amiss.

This one is certainly ambitious. The company includes musicians who function as a warm-up band before we’re urged to “strap (ourselves) in” and prepare for a wild ride. After some mumbo-jumbo about the interior/exterior existence of being an actor, we’re off into Derren Brown’s singular land, and brand, of amazement.

We watch three rings form a link that then becomes undone, whilst Lipkin dons an American accent and launches into a genial huckster routine that suggests he'd make a natural Harold Hill if and when The Music Man next gets a London airing.

We hear snatches of Ethel Merman alongside Charlie O’Connor’s original music, as well as choreography and movement from Dannielle “Rhimes” Lecointe that pushes Unbelievable towards semi-status as a musical.

Those keen to track ascendant careers may be surprised to see Samuel Creasey – the James Corden lookalike much-feted a season or two ago for The Book of Dust at the Bridge – as a game compere who knows his way round a prop-laden production where very little by definition is what it seems.

In his 2022 solo piece Showman , Brown shook a proven formula up by allowing his own story to inform the sleight-of-hand: the result leant emotional ballast to the trickery that is his stock-in-trade.

Unbelievable could use more such feeling, as well as a tighter rein over those chosen from the audience who are often left standing in the aisles in what can sometimes seem an inadvertent exercise in crowd control. I was as gobsmacked as anyone by the confounding nature of much of the material, but only once was I actually moved.

That came in the second act when a sweet-faced 11-year-old called Samuel came onstage to participate in a trick involving a bowl and a balloon that is itself presented, after a fashion, as a lesson in gratitude.

I’m not sure whether Brown is keeping a long-term eye on his own legacy. But if he is interested in the next generation or two perpetuating his highly specialised skill set, he could do worse than call once again upon Samuel at some point in the future, which as we know belongs without trickery but entirely truthfully to the young.

Live reviews

Derren Brown - most know what to expect by now from all his TV work - some mind-reading, some magic tricks, some amazing acts of memory and intuition. But his shows still always manage to bring something interesting and new. I won't tell what was in the show (it would spoil it, and besides, he asked us all very nicely not to!), but it is a very entertaining show and well worth going to. It ran for 2 3/4 hours (including interval), and I was never for a second bored or restless, he held the audience gripped throughout. One great thing about Derren Brown is at no point does he pretend to have any unusual or supernatural powers, beyond his amazing ability to "read" people by their expressions and guide them by suggestion and hypnosis, and his incredible memory. Instead, he uses the entirely human skills he has to debunk the fraudsters who do claim magic, supernatural, or psychic powers.

I was trying to figure out how to travel to the U.K. to see you but now it’s just a short 6 hour flight from the west coast to NY. Sooo happy ? I knew this would be a lucky revelation because my horoscope said something about a full moon that was in some hemisphere of some upper delta triad. No, not really but I do feel all the luck of getting to see you. No full moons necessary.

I don’t believe that the universe is a catalog from which we order wish powered products but I have wished you would come to the US, and it does feel fortunate. Can’t wait to see you!

I just booked the super fan tickets for New York City. i am so excited to see Derren perform his show. I have been following Derren for years and have nearly everyone of his books. A true master of his craft. Thanks for coming to the United States.

Joy. Excitement. Joy. I’ve been hoping Derren would come to the states!! Definitely coming to see him perform. Can’t wait. I’m practically already jumping out of my seat just thinking about it!

Got my tickets! See you on april 21st (my birthday)!

Hello Derren,on the begining I would like to sorry for my english. Finally I found something, how I can send You a message. 5 or 6 years ago I was on Your show Svengali in the Blackpool. I’m sad because You didn’t came out, but I understand that it is not easy to do this show. I’m Your big fan from the Czech Republic and Your show was realy amazing and once I would like to meet You, shake your hand and get a photo with You and I wonder if You can read or control mind of somebody, who doesn’t understand to english well. Finally I would like to thank You so much, because thanks to You I’m interesting in the psychology and everything You are doing is interesting, amazing, funny and unbeliveble.Once more thank’s a lot for the best show that I ever saw and I wish You just the best and I hope for any reply. Sincerely Tomas O.

I’ve been hoping you’d come to america and now i have front row tickets to see you! i can’t wait!

Last night, I went to Derren’s show at Atlantic Theatre. Despite the obvious futility of the venture, it’s difficult not to be completely in love with him.

I went to see Derren in New York. The intimate setting of the theater makes his connection to the audience all the more engaging but beware of possible side effects. Side effects include but are not limited to thinking about him constantly, trying to get him to become my BFF, and seriously considering spending money I don’t have to fly to New York to see him again.

Wow, I just saw Derren on Friday in New York! He was amazing.

Seeing him in person is so much better than just having watched him on DVD (and a few YouTube videos). The energy in the room was electric. We were all just spellbound.

I’ll probably sneak another trip in to see him again.

Derren, I hope you come to New York again.

I saw Derren’s performance last night and wanted to say how grateful I am to him. Not only did he put on a very substantial and entertaining show, but was immensely gracious afterwards as well. Even though it was announced that he would not be signing, I was one of a few hopefuls who stuck around anyway. When Derren did come up the stairs, it was clear that he was in a bit of a rush, and yet he was so kind to each of us who waited there. Even though he spent only a few minutes with us, it felt like he really tried to make a genuine connection with each of us and truly appreciated us for coming to see him. It was an experience I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you so much Derren!

Just got back to Phoenix AZ from a trip to New York City to see Derren Browns Secret. I told my wife and two children “lets go to NYC for our vacation.” So we did.

I saw Derrens show “Secret” two times while I was there. I was amazed and baffled by his performance each time and I am no more closer to figuring out how he does what he does.

I would fly back to see the show again in a heartbeat when time and money permit. Thanks Derren…I also red the book “Happy” and I like the message in it. Brilliant.

I would love to see Derren’s assessment of the work of Gregg Braden. Derren has cured me of a lot of gullibility for supernatural and pseudo science with his excellent book ‘Tricks of the Mind. I also met him when he was filming at Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh where i was the manager and he cured me of a lot of my spooky nonsense in the most polite and charming way. But I am still susceptible to the work of Gregg Braden- as are many others! I would love to see a good natured review by Derren of Gregg!

Any US dates for 2018? I’m going to be stuck in Detroit working until August / September and not sure if I will make the tour dates in Sarthend or not. 🙁
