By Car: The main mode of transport in Dooars is roadways. Most of the places are well-connected by roads. NH31 is the main highway of the area. Located 56km from Siliguri, visitors can easily reach Dooars by hiring a car from Siliguri.

By Train: Visitors who are hailing from other regions can board a train for New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). Since, NJP is the major railway head, connecting Siliguri with another region. It is also the nearest railway station from Dooars.

The average rainfall in Dooars is about 3,500 mm. Monsoon in Dooars generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Every year the forest area of Dooars remains close from 15th June to 15th September.

Ideally the best time to visit any place is considered when the weather conditions are delightful. For Dooars, you can choose to go in October, November, December, January, February and March which is the peak season and April, May and June which is the moderate season.

It depends on your objective of visiting. If you want almost sureshot rhinos and gaurs, you should plan a stay at Hollong Bungalow (Jaldapara). But if you want dense jungle, it’s Gorumara, Jaldapara is mostly grassland. If you want view of Bhutan mountain, trickling river and solitude, visit Jayanti.

You can book elephant and jeep safaris directly from the lodge. Due to limited number of rooms in Hollong Lodge, it gets booked months in advance. You need to book the lodge through West Bengal Forest Development Corporation office located in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

*Detailed itinerary:*

Day 01: bagdogra to jaldapara (distance:135 km| time: nearly 3 hours).

You will be picked up from NJP/Bagdogra as per your mode of transport, and taken to Jaldapara by car. It is a long road journey towards the east, which will take around 3 hours to reach without any break. On the way, there will be a few viewpoints, especially when you will cross rivers like Teesta and Jaldhaka. Upon reaching Jaldapara, you can rest for the day in our amazing property, the Sisamara wild hut, located on the bank of the Sisamara river. If you are lucky, you can see wild animals coming to drink water in the river in the late afternoon too. Rest up and enjoy the scrumptious dinner, cause you will have an early day tomorrow.

Day 02:(Jaldapara forest wild life safari)

Wake up early in the morning, as you have a scheduled wildlife safari in the Jaldapara forest. Do not forget to carry your official i-cards and tickets/money receipts when you enter the jungle. Enjoy a few hours in the jungle, on the jeep ride. On extra payment/on availability, you can opt for an elephant safari too. Return to the property after the safari and have lunch. You have the afternoon free. So you can schedule your own plan and the property can arrange for cars. Or, take a toto on the riverbank, and enjoy the silence. Else, you can take a car and check out the sightseeing points near Alipurduar. Remember, these afternoon activities are not included in the package. So, you will have to pay extra for that on the property.

Day 03: (Chapramari and Murti Siteseeing then transfer to lataguri | nearly 2 hours drive)

Have your breakfast and pack your things, as you will be transferred to our Lataguri property by car today. It is about a two-hour journey, and the beautiful roads will take you through dense forests. If you start early in the morning, you can be lucky with animal sightings on the road. You have a scheduled Murti sightseeing on the way after you pass through the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Murti river, before you enter Gorumara, has a large river bed, where people often get down to take photos with a nice background. Spend some time here, before you enter Lataguri and reach the destination for the day, the amazing Appu tea estate. As the name suggests, you will stay in an amazing tea estate, with an adjacent garden. In the afternoon, you can take a walk in the garden, and even check out the tea-making process in the local factories. If you have to buy gifts for your loved ones, nothing can be a better gift than tea leaves freshly produced from the garden!

Day 04: (Gorumara National Park Safari, visit jhalong, bindu and paren | total travel time nearly 4 hours)

If you get up early in the morning, you can pay extra at the property and arrange for a safari in the Gorumara National Park. The Jatraprasad Watch Tower has the best chance of a sighting. On the other hand, the Medla watchtower offers a unique experience, where you go in the jungle in bullock-drawn carts. Else, after breakfast, go to the Jhalong, Bindu, and Paren sightseeing. These places are near the Bhutan border, and you can see the Hydral Power projects in the place, in the backdrop of an amazing landscape. Get down to the river, sit on the rocks and enjoy the cold breeze on your face, even in the scorching sun overhead. Also, do try the local momos in the shops here, which are freshly made and to die for! Spend some beautiful moments here before you return to the property and stay for the night.

Day 05: (Drop to Bagdogra nearly 2 hours / drop to NJP early 1 hour 30 mins)

This is the day when you return home. After breakfast, you can indulge in light shopping from the local shops to buy mementos for your home or your loved ones. Hong Kong Market of Siliguri is one of the hot destinations for shopping fancy items imported from china, Singapore and other places. There are some beautiful wooden carvings of the animals like rhinos and elephants, which will help you keep the memories alive. Come back with an amazing experience as we drop you at your preferred destination of NJP/ Bagdogra by car.

Description, transfer to murti.

After reaching NJP, Bagdogra Airport or New Mal Junction, you will be first greeted and then transferred to Murti. Nestled beside a shimmering river in the same name and adjacent to Gorumara National park, Murti is a village known for its mesmerizing scenic beauty. Reach your resort and freshen up after checking in. Later in the day go for a short excursion to Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the oldest forest reserves in the entire West Bengal. Endowed with rich flora and fauna and serene ambience, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is the safe haven for the travellers visiting Dooars. Chapramari Watchtower is the major attraction of the forest. Visit the watchtower to witness various wild animals of Chapramari in their natural habitat. After this successful excursion, get back to your resort at Murti. The remaining day can be spent strolling around the resort while being accompanied by your dear ones. Dinner will be served in the evening and after dinner, overnight stay at Murti.

Sightseeing at Jaldhaka, Bindu and Paren

On day 2 of your Dooars Tour Plan for 3 Days, after breakfast, proceed for a sightseeing excursion to Jaldhaka, Bindu and Paren. Your first stop will be Jaldhaka. Situated near the Indo-Bhutan border and sprawled on the periphery of Neora Valley National Park, Jaldhaka is known for its scenic beauty and calmful ambience. Next, you will be taken to Bindu, a pristine village sited along the shimmering Jaldhaka River. Here you will witness cardamom plantation, pristine nature, and river Jaldhaka. You can also relish the beauty of Bhutan Hills and the Hydel Project Station of Bindu which attract countless migratory birds. After then visit Paren, another offbeat settlement surrounded by the green lofty hills and alpine forest. Get back to your resort again at Murti after this full-day sightseeing excursion. Also known as the Duars this is the ‘doorway’ to the Indo-Bhutan border area. The word ‘Duar’ literally means ‘door’ in local languages here, mainly Assamese, Bengali, and Nepali. The Dooars area with its mesmerizing natural beauty and wildlife is located in the eastern Himalayas foothills in the northern part of West Bengal. These are the rich Terai floodplains of the Sankosh river that flows mid-way between Eastern Dooars in Assam and the Western Dooars in Bengal.

The Dooars is a land of silvery rivers flowing down hilly slopes, gorgeous green tea gardens, dense tropical forest covers, the charm of ethnic music in quaint Indo-Bhutanese villages, fresh-from-the garden food, stretches of meadows and blue sky with the great Himalayas looming in the backdrop, a variety of animals, birds and fishes, and endless adventures in the mountain streams and caves, low hilly trekking trails and what not!

History of Dooars

Originally, the Dooars formed a part of the Kamata Kingdom under the Koch dynasty in India. Then it came under Bhutan and later the British in 1865. The British left India in 1947 and in 1949, the Dooars once again became as a part of the Union of India.

Geography and climate of Dooars

Dooars has an altitude ranging from 90 meters to around 1800 meters, which makes it a rich storehouse of hilly and plainland eco-systems. Major rivers like the Brahmaputra and Manas in Assam and the Teesta, Murti, Jaldhaka, Raidak, Kaljani, Torsha, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya and Dima in Bengal add to its natural affluence.

The Duars area receives an average rainfall of more than 3300 mm from mid- May to September and is mostly closed for tourists at that time. Summers are pleasant and winters are chilly and cloudy in higher altitude areas. However, summers are warmer and humid and winters very mild in the lower floodplains.

People and culture of Dooars

The people here are an Indo-Mongoloid mix of Bengali, Nepali and tribal people. The tribal are the Bodo of Assam, the Rabha, the Mech, the Toto, the Koch Rajbongshi, the Tamang/Murmi, the Limbu, the Lepchas of Bengal, Oraons, Mahali, Mundas, Kharia, Lohara and Chik Baraik and migrant Santhals who come to work in the tea gardens.

Siliguri is the largest business centre and connecting hub to various places in Duars, with private cars and buses easily available from here. Other main cities are Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Goalpara and Dhubri in Assam; Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Malbazar, Mainaguri, Dhupguri, Birpara in West Bengal; Kishanganj in Bihar; some even consider the business nerve-centre of Bhutan, Phuentsholing as a key part of Duars.

The bio-diverse wildlife and woodlands form the Manas National Park in Assam, Jaldapara National Park , Gorumara National Park , Chapramari Wildlife Reserve , Buxa Tiger Reserve and the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal. The main endangered species here are the Royal Bengal tiger and the Indian one horned rhinoceros . Elephants and Indian bison (Gaur) are still in good numbers.
