Indulging in kosher dining not only offers a taste of Jewish culinary traditions but also provides a sense of comfort and reassurance for those adhering to kosher dietary laws. From kosher-certified restaurants to kosher delis and bakeries, Mexico City has it all when it comes to satisfying your kosher cravings.

In this article, we will explore the history of kosher dining in Mexico City and highlight some of the popular kosher restaurants that you shouldn’t miss during your visit. So, let’s embark on a mouthwatering journey and discover where to find the best kosher food in Mexico City!

History of Kosher Dining in Mexico City

The history of kosher dining in Mexico City dates back several centuries, intertwining the diverse cultural and religious influences that have shaped the city’s culinary landscape. The arrival of Jewish immigrants from Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries played a significant role in the establishment of kosher dining options in the city.

As Jewish communities started to flourish in Mexico City, the demand for kosher food grew. Initially, Jewish families relied on their own homemade kosher meals, ensuring they adhered to the dietary laws. However, as the Jewish population expanded, a need arose for dedicated kosher establishments to cater to their culinary needs.

One of the milestones in the development of kosher dining in Mexico City was the establishment of the first kosher butcher shop in the 1920s. This allowed the community to access a reliable source of kosher meat, which is a fundamental aspect of kosher dietary requirements.

Over the years, more kosher restaurants, delis, and bakeries emerged to cater to the growing demand. These establishments not only served the local Jewish community but also attracted non-Jewish patrons who were intrigued by the unique flavors and cultural experience that kosher dining offered.

Today, Mexico City boasts a diverse range of kosher dining options, showcasing the fusion of Jewish culinary traditions with Mexican flavors and ingredients. From traditional Ashkenazi and Sephardic dishes to fusion cuisine that combines Jewish and Mexican influences, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

The continued growth and popularity of kosher dining in Mexico City are not only a testament to the city’s multiculturalism but also highlight the inclusivity and acceptance of diverse culinary traditions. Whether you’re seeking traditional Jewish cuisine or a modern twist on kosher dishes, you’ll discover a variety of options that cater to your preferences.

Tips and Challenges of Keeping Kosher While Traveling

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Imagine walking down the bustling streets of Bangkok , past street food vendors hawking their wares and delectable smells wafting your way. You're wondering what the perfect #foodporn picture would be for posting on Instagram when you realize that, wait a minute, you keep kosher. So you just keep on walking…

A good deal of travel requires immersing yourself in local cultures — what's better than diving your face into a steaming bowl of Pad Thai? Well, when you are a traveler with dietary restrictions, there are logistical challenges. With that in mind, here are some tips that can make kosher travel abroad experiences more satisfying:

1. Skip the Airline Kosher Meal and Bring Your Own

Airlines are delightful in so many ways — sometimes they even drag you off a plane or ask you to pee in a cup — but they do offer an extensive list of special meals. Every major airline offers a kosher option, known in aviation parlance as KSML, except one: Hawaiian Airlines. But its flight attendants were incredibly hospitable and happy to improvise on the fly.

Recently, I shared the experience of a family bound for South Africa on a 16-hour flight without their Kosher meals. No one wants to be in that situation, which is why you should always bring a back-up . You must assume you won't find anything else to eat on the plane once you've taken off. Sure, this means you'll need to plan ahead and make some to-go meals, but nothing is better than a home-cooked meal at 36,000 feet.

2. Do Your Research, and Do It Again

When planning a trip, we pour over reviews and scour the internet to plan every step of what we're going to do and when. When traveling kosher, you need to do the same for your food. The single best source for finding out about kosher options abroad is Chabad.org, a global organization with more than 3,500 institutions worldwide. Often times, the local Chabad institution will have its own restaurant or meals and will usually have a page on its site dedicated to keeping kosher in that locale.

After you've found your restaurant, be sure to look it up online as well. Sometimes the restaurants will list their opening and closing times, but it's important to contact that establishment and confirm that information. Many restaurant websites are in foreign languages and sometimes Google translate just doesn't cut it! By calling or emailing, you can be sure to cut down on some of the confusion as there's little worse than getting to your oasis of kosher in a food desert only to find that restaurant closed — trust me, I know from experience.

3. When in Rome: Eat Like the Locals

You've got through your 14-hour flight to Tokyo, found the local kosher restaurant, but still feel left out? In certain places, you can eat like the locals. For example, finding noodles and hot water is a pretty easy task in many Asian countries. Some of the most durable kosher products that don't require refrigeration and are easy to store include soup cups (of all flavors and varieties); all you need is some hot water.

4. It Never Hurts to Ask

In my travels, I've found that most people I've interacted with at grocery stores and food establishments have been extremely accommodating to answering (seemingly) odd questions about ingredients in the food and letting me see the packaging to identify kosher symbols.

While it may feel like you're inconveniencing others when you ask, there's a learning experience and exchange of information which occurs. Explaining what kosher is to the flight attendants on my Hawaiian Airlines flight definitely had its humorous moments, but it also made for a more enjoyable and satiating flight.

5. Mini-Fridge? Microwave? There May Be A Charge for That — Unless You Ask!

During a recent stay at The Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii, I requested a mini-fridge and microwave to store and warm up the food I brought with me, arranging this beforehand — remember: planning! — so I'd be all set to go at check-in. The front desk agent did inform me, however, that there would be an additional fee involved for using them. While many hotels will provide these two items for free, note that some do charge. Upon check-out, though, I was informed that I had been erroneously charged and that due to "medical or dietary restrictions," the hotel would not charge those fees. So, not only did I make some money back, I also learned a valuable lesson about keeping kosher while traveling: always ask.

6. Have Hotel Status? It Can Get You Kosher Food, Too

One of the best benefits to hotel credit cards and premium cards like The Platinum Card from American Express and The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN is that they both offer free hotel elite status . Not all elite status is created equal, but one of the best mid-tier ones is Hilton Honors Gold , which offers complimentary breakfast.

I reached out to the concierge at the hotel and was pleasantly surprised when they said they'd provide a kosher breakfast at no additional cost. Note that Hyatt properties in Hawaii have been known to provide kosher breakfast to their Globalist members as well. Be sure to email or call the property you plan to visit at least three to four weeks before your arrival so the staff can work to accommodate your request.

7. Find the 'American Aisle' at a Grocery Store

While the prices for products in the US-brand food aisles will most certainly cost twice as much as local ones, the US foods section is often your best bet for finding generic kosher items.

Let's talk about chocolate — because who doesn't love it? When purchased in the United States, Kit Kat, for example, bears the symbol for kosher certification. That same brand of food outside of the US may not have that required kosher symbol. Unfortunately, this means you usually can't just pick up a candy bar from the local bodega or supermarket. You can, however, head over to the US food aisle, where you can locate US-made products with kosher symbols such as soda, candy bars and cereals.

8. Bring Food With You — and Pack it Right

Most importantly, you will need to bring food with you — how much and what will depend on the length of your trip, the amount of people in your group and what you usually enjoy. For lighter meals, stick with high protein snacks like nuts, granola, whole wheat breads, tuna and peanut butter since they're filling, affordable and easy to store and travel with. For larger meals, there are several supermarkets and restaurants in cities like New York and Los Angeles — that have large kosher-keeping populations — which provide freshly-made (but frozen) meals. They will also pack the food for you in an insulated, airplane-ready box.

To accommodate kosher travelers, one of the most popular supermarkets on the east coast, Pomegranate , a kosher supermarket in Brooklyn , will put together fresh meals that are airplane-ready. It's known for its fair pricing, portion sizes and the quality of the food. I strongly recommend asking the folks there to pack the food in an airline-ready box — and check that box as a piece of luggage. Having done this on several occasions, my airplane-ready box has arrived at my destination many hours away unscathed and still frozen.

Bottom Line

While it isn't easy to plan for all your meals and snacks — especially if you're traveling with a large group — it isn't impossible. With the tips above, you'll be on your way to an easier and more fulfilling travel experience.

Eating Kosher in Mexico City

Mexico City is the densely populated, high-altitude capital of Mexico. It's known for its Templo Mayor (a 13th-century Aztec temple), the baroque Catedral Metropolitana of the Spanish conquistadors and the Palacio Nacional, which houses historic murals by Diego Rivera. All of this resides in and around the Plaza de la Constitución, the massive main square also known as the Zócalo.

Here's why Coca-Cola bottles have yellow caps right now

  • On Passover, observant Jews refrain from eating leavened foods or foods with leavening ingredients.
  • Yellow caps on Coke bottles indicate the soda is kosher, or fit, for drinking on Passover.
  • It's made with Coke's original recipe of sucrose instead of corn syrup.

Insider Today

If you've perused the beverage aisle of your local supermarket lately, you may have noticed that some soda bottles are sporting yellow caps  instead of their usual colors. That's because the Jewish holiday of Passover is underway, and if you're a devoted foodie, you might want to grab a bottle before it disappears until next spring.

Year-round, Jewish organizations like the Orthodox Union work with companies to ensure that the food they produce meets dietary standards as detailed in the Torah and codes of Jewish law. If everything checks out, their products are certified kosher — meaning fit or proper in Hebrew — with symbols on the packaging.

On Passover, Jewish dietary restrictions are different and require a higher level of certification

This year, Passover begins on the evening of April 22 and lasts through April 30.

Related stories

Jews observing the holiday of Passover refrain from eating anything categorized as "chametz" — leavened foods or foods with leavening ingredients made from barley, rye, oats, wheat, or spelt — for the duration of the holiday. Eastern European Jews of Ashkenazi descent (which make up about 75% of the Jewish population) also avoid another category known as kitniyot , which includes legumes and other grains like corn.

A yellow cap on a bottle of Coca-Cola, indicating that it's kosher for Passover. Talia Lakritz/Business Insider

Coca-Cola is certified kosher year-round, but its high-fructose corn syrup renders it unfit for consumption on Passover.

Coke actually used to be made with sucrose (made from cane or beet sugar) instead of high-fructose corn syrup, but when the switch was made, Coca-Cola sodas became off-limits on Passover.

In 1935, Rabbi Tuvia Geffen, who served as the rabbi of Atlanta's Congregation Shearith Israel for 60 years, worked with the company to reinstate a limited run of the original recipe around Passover time so that Jews observing the holiday could still enjoy it, The New York Times reported.

Today, bottles containing the Passover-friendly soda are marked with yellow caps

The caps are also stamped with "O-U-P," the Passover kosher certification symbol of the Orthodox Union.

It's not just observant Jews who are grateful for Coke without corn syrup. Purists, foodies, and hipsters who can tell the difference between the two concoctions wait all year to buy up batches of Coca-Cola with sucrose, claiming it tastes better with the original sweetener.

Try it while it lasts!

Brothy Shrimp Meatballs With Sungold Tomatoes

Paola Briseño-González's Caldo de Albóndigas de Camarón.

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

These meatballs are tender, fluffy and bouncy, made with shrimp instead of meat, inspired by bright variations found in coastal Mexico. The albóndigas de camarón are gently poached in a broth made with tangy Sungold tomatoes and a handful of chopped cilantro for its fresh herbal flavor. Ladle the brothy shrimp meatballs into bowls and serve with sliced cabbage, cilantro, red onion and limes.

Chop the shrimp into 1-inch pieces. Add ½ cup chopped shrimp into a food processor along with the garlic, onion and ½ teaspoon salt. Pulse until finely chopped, but you can still make out the shrimp (10 to 15 times). Add egg and pulse twice to combine.

Combine the shrimp mixture with the remaining chopped shrimp, cilantro, panko , ¾ teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper in a large bowl. Mix with a silicone spatula until well combined; the mixture will feel a little sticky and wet. Using a medium ice cream scooper or a ¼-cup measuring cup , shape into 16 to 18 meatballs with your hands, about the size of a lime. Place them on a medium baking sheet, and place in the fridge to firm up for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat oil in a large stockpot over medium low. Add onion and ½ teaspoon salt; cook until softened, stirring often so onion doesn’t brown, 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant and softened, 2 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, until slightly darkened in color, 2 minutes. Add Sungold or cherry tomatoes, chipotle, 1 teaspoon salt, 6 cups water and bay leaves. Bring to a simmer, stirring until most of the tomatoes soften and start to burst, 10 minutes. Discard bay leaves.

Working in two batches, gently drop the albóndigas into the broth and return to a simmer; cook until they firm up and turn white and opaque, and they reach an internal temperature of 125 degrees (they will continue to cook, reaching 145 degrees due to carryover heat), about 4 to 5 minutes.

Ladle three or four albóndigas and broth in each of four to six shallow bowls. Top with cabbage, cilantro and onion; serve with lime wedges on the side. You can make the albóndigas ahead and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours. Heat them in the broth right before serving.

What Does It Mean to Keep Kosher for Passover When You’re Recovering From an Eating Disorder?

By Emma Specter

A Seder plate on Passover.

I’ve always loved Passover. Okay, not always; my three-quarters Jewish, mostly atheist family and I didn’t throw seders when I was growing up. But ever since college, I’ve been coming together with friends to read the Haggadah (albeit one with a queer, feminist, decidedly modern bent), break matzah apart, dip parsley in salt water, ask the Four Questions, and cheer on the youngest at the table as they found the afikomen. When Bernie Sanders dropped out of the 2020 presidential race on the first night of Passover, I quietly mourned, imagining what it would have been like to see someone in the White House sharing in these ancient traditions, and not just for PR points.

A major component of Passover, I learned as I grew up and graduated and made more Jewish friends—some, raised much more observant than I was—is the ritual of keeping kosher throughout the festival’s eight nights. Leavened bread is verboten, which basically means pasta, cereal, pancakes, cookies—or “carbs,” as I learned to think of these foods in middle school, when the specter diet culture first taught me to eschew them—are off-limits. I can’t help but think of the frustration that chef and author Gabrielle Hamilton recounts in her 2011 memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter , upon taking a job cooking at a summer camp and finding out that many of the girls were “eight years old and already weird about wanting a piece of bread.” I felt that frustration myself, knowing it was the epitome of bullshit to deny myself the foods I loved, but feeling too seduced by the mirage of thinness to live any other way.

Anxious partial Jew that I am, I’m always looking for ways to “confirm” that I’m doing things correctly on Jewish holidays. (Seriously, just ask me about my challah game .) But as someone who has struggled with disordered eating—and, specifically, binge eating disorder —for over a decade, I’ve always known that cutting out any food, even just for a week, and for spiritual reasons, would likely lead me right back to the worlds of bingeing, compensatory calorie-counting, and obsessive exercising I’d worked so, so hard to leave behind me.

All that changed this year, probably because my relationship with my faith has changed. Even as I mourn the violence in Gaza, the ongoing Israel–Hamas war has made me feel more connected to my Jewish faith than ever. I want to yoke myself more tightly to its traditions, if only to remind myself (and the loved ones I observe Passover with) that Judaism encompasses far more than any country or ideology or military ever could. I’m no longer comfortable with my connection to the Jewish faith being merely “cultural”; I want to observe some of the customs my ancestors did, like fasting or keeping kosher on specific holidays, to tether myself to what it means to be an active, open-eyed Jew in this world, one who learns from the pain of the past while also fighting for a liberated future.

Trousers for Petites That Don’t Need a Tailor? Inside My Quest to Find the Perfect Pairs

Introducing Julez Smith

By Leah Faye Cooper

I woke up on Monday, the first night of Passover, thinking about food, as I so often do. Unlike five years ago, when I might have begun the day calculating the calorie content of the banana and black coffee I’d allow myself for breakfast, now I menu-plan from bed with abandon, often going into the kitchen to whip up a stack of pancakes or pour myself a bowl of the full-fat cereal I never used to buy from the grocery store. On Monday, toast with almond butter sounded appealing before I remembered the bread was off-limits. So, I made a green smoothie instead before heading off to Pilates, knowing that I was enacting virtually every Los Angeles cliché known to man but not really caring.

In the middle of my Pilates class, however, something shifted. I’d gulped down my protein-rich smoothie before getting on my Reformer, knowing that I would need the sustenance, but my legs and arms soon started shaking when I held them up in the class’s guided poses. I’d seen this before, back in the days when I used to eat one RX Bar and then beeline to barre classes I couldn’t afford to attempt to work off the paltry “carb content.” I was always shaky and nauseous and pale in class, watching the lithe beauties around me do everything perfectly as I tried to ignore how, well, hungry I was. Now I’m healthy enough to know how to deal with that hunger—I immediately went home from class and made myself a huge, delicious bowl of fried rice—but when I was in the grips of my eating disorder, faintness and frailty were…well, not the goal , necessarily, but certainly acceptable side effects of my quest for thinness.

As relatively healed as I feel right now, I won’t lie; the moment freaked me out a little. I knew the reasons behind my hunger weren’t the same, but I was still edgy the rest of the day, annoyed at my body for “keeping the score,” as bodies are wont to do, while I tried to keep kosher. Was it possible that I would I backslide into an ED mindset—or even a full binge-eating episode—if I kept playing games with my food, even if those “games” were quite literally handed down by the Torah?

When I sat down to seder at my friend Sophie‘s house that night, though, the discomfort of the day melted away. I was surrounded by Jews and what my married-to-a-Jewish-woman goyische friend calls “Jewish culture appreciators,” and as we sang, cried, ate, laughed, and spread hearty helpings of Irish butter on Sophie’s dad’s perfectly charred homemade matzoh, I was reminded that fasting or keeping kosher wasn’t about isolating myself, as my eating disorder had forced me to do. It was instead about sharing something small and essential in common with your mishpocha , a term I’ve come to understand as “large, loud, blended family.”

I don’t know if I’ll keep kosher next Passover, or fast next Yom Kippur, but I want to, if only to feel closer to my lineage and offer something (however small) in sacrifice for the joy and love and chaos of my adult life. If I don’t, though, I know it’s also okay, because I alone write the rules of my spiritual life and identity. If I want to skip the fast for my mental and physical health, or eat trayf , or occasionally work on Shabbat (okay, I’m trying to quit this one), or support the students organizing for a free Palestine around the country, the God I choose to believe in won’t cast me out for it, so long as I show up for the community around me and do my best to learn more each year about my Jewish faith than I did at the preceding year’s seder table. To borrow a phrase from my Borscht Belt–adjacent forebears: “Good enough, right?”

By DAVID CRARY (AP National Writer)

Passover is a major Jewish holiday, celebrated over seven or eight days each year, commemorating the exodus of ancient Israelites from slavery in Egypt, as recounted in the Bible. To many Jews, it symbolizes freedom and the birth of a Jewish nation.

This year, for many Jews, the holiday’s mood will be somber due to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the rise of antisemitic incidents elsewhere.

WHEN IS PASSOVER THIS YEAR?

Passover – known as Pesach in Hebrew — begins on April 22. By tradition, it will be celebrated for seven days in Israel and for eight days by some Jews in the rest of the world.

WHAT ARE KEY PASSOVER RITUALS AND TRADITIONS?

For many Jews, Passover is a time to reunite with family and recount the exodus from Egypt at a meal called the Seder. Observant Jews avoid grains known as chametz, a reminder of the unleavened bread the Israelites ate when they fled Egypt quickly with no time for dough to rise. Cracker-like matzo is OK to eat; most breads, pastas, cakes and cookies are off-limits.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?

For many Israelis, it’s hard to celebrate an occasion focused on freedom when some of their compatriots are still held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. The hostages’ plight has reverberated worldwide, with some families in the Jewish diaspora asking rabbis to give them additional prayers for this year’s Seder. Others have created a new Haggadah, the book read during the Seder, to reflect current realities.

Many Seder tables, in Israel and elsewhere, are expected to have empty seats, representing those killed or taken hostage on Oct. 7, as well as soldiers unable to return home for Passover.

There’s also intense concern, in some countries, about a recent rise in antisemitic incidents .

The event was hosted by the Secure Community Network, which provides security and safety resources to hundreds of Jewish organizations and institutions across North America.

“It is not a time for panic, but it is a time for continued vigilance,” said Wray, adding that the FBI was particularly concerned about the threat posed by “lone actors.”

WHAT ARE RABBIS AND SCHOLARS SAYING?

“The Seder is supposed to help us to relive past slavery and liberation from Egypt and to learn its lessons, but in 2024 it must also ask contemporary questions about the confusing and traumatic present and most important, generate hope for the future.” — Noam Zion, emeritus member of the faculty of Jewish studies at the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.

“At the Seder, we make a point of eating bitter herbs, to recall the difficulties of the past, and also drink wine and eat the foods of freedom. It is a mix — a meal filled with discussion that confronts the challenges of being a Jew throughout history and of being a Jew today.” — Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, a major U.S.-based Jewish organization .

“What a challenging time it is right now for the Jewish people. We feel so alone … There is so much cynicism in the world, so much hopelessness. We need Passover now more than ever. It’s a story that ends in freedom and joy.” — Rabbi Noah Farkas, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

The United Nations is calling for “a clear, transparent and credible investigation” of mass graves uncovered at two major hospitals in war-torn Gaza that were raided by Israeli troops. A U.N. spokesman said Tuesday that credible investigators must have access to the sites. The U.N. human rights chief also said he was “horrified” by the destruction of the hospitals and the reported discovery of mass graves in and around the facilities. He also called for independent investigations, saying that “given the prevailing climate of impunity, this should include international investigators.” The Israeli military said its forces exhumed bodies that Palestinians had buried earlier as part of its search for the remains of hostages captured by Hamas.
