Wentworth plays host to one of the DP World Tour's flagship events this week, with a stacked field lining up for the BMW PGA Championship. Sadly, not all the talk is about golf with 17 LIV Golf players in the field. They will be up against the cream of the crop in terms of the PGA Tour, with Jon Rahm and Rory McIroy teeing it up. Billy Horschel is also in the field to defend his title.

‘It’s going to be odd:’ More than a dozen LIV Golfers in field for DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship

While the FedEx Cup season comes to a close this week, the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai is still going strong and coming up on one of its biggest events of the season: the BMW PGA Championship.

The entry list for the BMW PGA (not to be confused with last week’s BMW Championship on the PGA Tour) is out and the DP World Tour’s flagship event will be well represented with LIV Golf stars.

How is this possible? While players who joined the LIV Golf series were suspended from the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour did not levy the same level of punishment. Members of the DP World Tour were barred from only the three events co-sanctioned by the two tours.

Kevin Na

LIV Golf’s response to PGA Tour’s changes? One sentence — for now.

Four golfers, including Ian Poulter, were eventually granted spots in the Genesis Scottish Open as the case was working its way through the British appeals process.

Most players have made limited appearances on the DP World Tour, but 18 LIV golfers will be in the field in two weeks at Wentworth.

“It’s going to be odd seeing certain people, obviously, at Wentworth,” Matt Fitzpatrick said after his opening round at the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship Thursday. “That is going to be a bit weird, and obviously it’s a little bit disappointing.”

LIV Golfers statuses are still up in the air for next year’s Ryder Cup which — unlike the Presidents Cup — is not run by the PGA Tour, but instead the PGA of America and DP World Tour.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what happens [with the Ryder Cup],” Fitzpatrick said. “Obviously they’re not quite in as strong a position as the PGA Tour are in terms of regulations or whatever it is. Yeah, I guess we’ll just have to see how it plays out.”

For now, this will probably be the biggest convergence of regular tour players and LIV golfers since the Open Championship last month. Several non-World Tour members — Talor Gooch, Kevin Na, Jason Kokrak and Abraham Ancer — are in the field as anyone in the top-60 of the Official World Golf Ranking is eligible to play.

The event comes the week after the LIV Golf Invitational Boston September 2-4. For anyone competing in both, it will mean back-to-back starts with a transatlantic trip in between.

The full list of LIV Golfers in the field is below:

-Abraham Ancer -Richard Bland -Laurie Canter -Sergio Garcia -Talor Gooch -Brendan Grace -Justin Harding -Sam Horsfield -Martin Kaymer -Jason Kokrak -Pablo Larrazábal -Graeme McDowell -Kevin Na -Shaun Norris -Adrian Otaegui -Ian Poulter -Patrick Reed -Lee Westwood

Griffin Wood on where he’s played most of his professional golf to this point… “I've got a lot of mini tours in the U.S., played on the Dakotas Tour, I played everywhere, APT a little bit, the Asher Tour out in Phoenix and I played (PGA TOUR) Canada two years ago. I had conditional, so I played there half a season. Last year I had conditional, but I didn't get into anything. Yeah, so mostly in the U.S. I've been playing full time for about five years in total even though I'm a little older. I had to take some time off. A little later progression.”

Wood on what was behind his extended break from professional golf… “ I had a back injury where I couldn't play for a couple years. When I came back, I was not shooting 60s on courses. I had to work to support myself and try and get my game back and try and play as much as I could. I played one year out of college. So I graduated in 2012, played for a year. Played pretty well, like was ‑‑ so I kind of proved to myself I could do it in small mini tours. Then I got hurt right before Q‑School right out of college, it would have been 2013. Then I was off for a couple years and was kind of pedaling around for a while. I've been back for the last four, I'd say, playing pretty full time and trying to get back.”

Wood on the playoff at Monday’s open qualifier… “I was playing solid golf and I bogeyed my last hole in regulation. It was a pretty easy hole, and I was pretty devastated because I thought that would be the difference. But I rebounded really well, because after I made that bogey, you know, you can go south quick. Me and another guy, Matt Atkins, birdied the first hole in a 5‑for‑2 (playoff). I had my head on straight, that was the big thing, and I was able to play right after I finished. I went right to the playoff hole, which helped. We finished in the dark, we didn't have any more time to play another hole and it worked out perfectly.”
