15 Secret Menu Dairy Queen Blizzards To Satisfy Your Ice Cream Craving

blizzards with sprinkles and whipped cream and one with chocolate crumbles

Nothing seems to hit quite as right as a Dairy Queen Blizzard, regardless of the temperature outside. Blended smooth with any mix-ins of your choice, Blizzards have an option for just about anybody, whether you're a chocoholic, a lover of classics, or a fruit fanatic.

The Dairy Queen Blizzard menu is extensive with endless topping combinations, so much that it can feel impossible to pick. Dairy Queen regularly updates its seasonal menu to give us fresh options, but have you ever longed for a Blizzard of the past? Or craved a shake version of one of your other favorite desserts? Just like with other beloved drive-through chains, Dairy Queen fans and employees have curated a secret menu to either replicate past limited edition Blizzards or create something entirely new.

We've gone ahead and tried 15 of these secret Blizzards to let you know if they're worth a trip to DQ or if they're ... better off kept as secrets. Check out our list and then head to your local Dairy Queen and ask for your favorite.

Butterbeer Bilzzard

Harry Potter fans love to see a good Butterbeer replication. Since there is unfortunately no official recipe for this magical flavored ale from one of our favorite fictional worlds, the interpretation of what Butterbeer should taste like varies from person to person and place to place. The secret Dairy Queen Butterbeer Blizzard is made by ordering a vanilla Butterfinger Blizzard with butterscotch (or caramel if butterscotch isn't available) mix-ins. And in our opinion, the witches and wizards of Diagon Alley would be disappointed.

The taste of Butterfinger candies in this Blizzard didn't seem quite right for mimicking Butterbeer, and we liken that to the peanut butter in Butterfinger. Most Butterbeer copycats we've tried, whether it be ice cream or coffee or a soda-like beverage, taste mostly of butterscotch and caramel. If you're hoping for a Butterbeer rendition that Harry would approve of, either pass this Blizzard up or try asking for butterscotch and caramel mix-ins, sans Butterfinger.

Of course, it's hard to make a Blizzard taste bad ,  so this one, in fact, did taste very good. It's not to say you wouldn't enjoy it — it just doesn't scream Butterbeer. We give it a 5 out of 10.

Caramel Pie Delight Blizzard

There's one problem with trying to replicate pie-inspired Blizzards: Some Dairy Queens have run out of pie pieces. The secret Dairy Queen Caramel Pie Delight Blizzard calls for a vanilla Blizzard mixed up with caramel, fudge, chocolate chunks, and pie pieces. We had to substitute Nilla Wafers for the pie pieces.

The source of this secret shake says it's inspired by chocolate turtle pie — we don't feel like chocolate turtle or caramel delight describes this pie Blizzard. A turtle implies chocolate, caramel, and a nut of choice (often peanuts or pecans), but there were no nuts in this recipe. The fudge and chocolate chunks also distract from the caramel.

We recommend nixing the fudge and chocolate chunks and asking for extra caramel to really stick to what this Blizzard is supposed to be. If anything were to describe this one, we think it would be Twix. There's caramel and chocolate and a nougat-like crunch from the wafers. Is it as delightfully caramelly as the name claims? No. Is it still a decadent Blizzard that you'll enjoy ever last bite of? Of course. We say 6 out of 10 for this not-quite-caramel delight, not-quite-turtle Blizzard.

Samoa Blizzard

The Girl Scout cookie cravings seem to always be the strongest when it's not selling season. Samoa — one of the best Girl Scout cookies out there, in our opinion  – is a mix of buttery shortbread, caramel, toasted coconut and dark chocolate. As a cookie, these ingredients are great, but as a Blizzard? Sounds like heaven. The online recipe for the secret Dairy Queen Samoa Blizzard calls for a Twix blizzard with chocolate cone dip and coconut added in. However, our local Blizzard didn't have Twix — Twix candy pieces were kept in stock for a special summer Blizzard in 2018 — so we had to substitute fudge, caramel, and Nilla wafers instead.

Our expectations were high and, unfortunately, not met. The first three or four bites of this Blizzard yielded no coconut taste at all. The flavor did finally join the party about a quarter of the way into the Blizzard, but we were hopeful for a strong coconut flavor from the start — because that is, after all, the leading flavor in the Girl Scout Cookie.

We also think the chocolate cone dip can be left out if you too have to substitute fudge for Twix. The chocolate was just a touch too strong with both. Overall, the Samoa Blizzard comes in at a 7 out of 10 — a bit more coconut next time and we'll give a few points back.

Birthday Cake Blizzard

Birthday cake flavor and ice cream are like peas and carrots, only tastier. This secret Dairy Queen menu item is a vanilla Blizzard with cookie dough, rainbow sprinkles, and vanilla syrup. Sounds delicious in theory, looks like a yummy heap of cake-flavored goodness ... but let's just say that, if this were given to us on our birthday, we'd be too bummed out to even open presents.

While the flavor of vanilla is very strong because of the added syrup, there is no cake-like element to this Blizzard at all. Cake batter in ice cream has a distinctive flavor, but the cookie dough falls short in replicating that. The texture is all off, too; cake batter is normally smooth and mixed entirely into the shake, but DQ cookie dough comes in chunks.

Because of what we were expecting, this secret Blizzard is a disappointment. Sadly, we don't really think there is a way to create a birthday cake flavor in a Blizzard without actual birthday cake flavoring or batter (sprinkles, while pretty, don't do the trick on their own). Just 3 out of 10 for this not-so-happy Birthday Blizzard.

Banana Bread Blizzard

This one was actually a big, delightful surprise. We can admit that we feared the worst here — some kind of bread dough fused with bananas just didn't appeal. However, leave it to the internet to come up with something even better. If you're looking for a treat that hints at your favorite  banana bread  recipe without going hardcore on the loaf side of things, give this one a try.

For our secret menu hack, we ordered three fairly common mix-ins for the classic vanilla soft serve — banana, chocolate chunks, and graham crackers. Depending on the location, you may get either graham cracker pieces or crushed graham crackers. Our Blizzard contained crushed graham cracker dust, and it was pretty great; it gave us the banana bread taste without any questionable crunchy bits. The addition of chocolate was fine with us as well. If you're not adding big old chunks of dark chocolate to your banana bread, you're missing out on something great. To top it off, our Blizzard wizard had never heard of this combination (and was looking forward to trying it themselves), so we assume that it's not something that your average ice cream hacker knows about. We were quite pleased with the taste and would order it again, maybe even with a pump of peanut butter just to take it over the top. But as is, this delicious secret menu sweetie gets a nine out of 10 from us.

Banana Creme Pie Blizzard

Calling banana lovers everywhere: This is the Blizzard for you. The secret Dairy Queen Banana Creme Pie Blizzard is a way to keep a fan favorite all the way from 2012 alive. It's made with vanilla soft serve, sliced banana, pie pieces (or Nilla Wafers, depending on your store's stock), and whipped cream both blended in and on top.

This was easily one of our favorites out of all the Blizzards we tried, and the closest to tasting like what it replicates. The banana gets blended completely so the ice cream is still smooth, and it's extra creamy with the added whip. We think the Nilla Wafers tasted even better with the banana than pie pieces would have — more on par with banana pudding than banana creme pie, and not as overbearingly sweet as other Blizzards can be with its lack of syrup mix-ins. Where the sweetness of other Blizzards might be too much before you're finished, this one is enjoyable all the way to the end.

Of course, there's no reason to order this one if you hate bananas, but the banana flavor is not nearly as strong as you may think, since it has so many other ingredients to harmonize with. The Banana Creme Pie Blizzard gets a 9 out of 10 in our book, losing a point only because we ordered a small. It's not that weird to ask for seconds ... right?

PB&J Blizzard

Another treat that's only made better by the addition of those seasonal pie pieces, the PB&J Blizzard will appeal to those of you who love either peanut butter or nostalgia. Add a pump of the peanut butter topping, a scoop of strawberry sauce, and a handful of pie pieces to plain soft serve to make this whizzed-up ice cream treat taste a lot like your favorite after-school snack. We found that, again, we would play around with the proportions of the mix-ins but that might just be because we're vehemently weighted on the peanut butter side of the PB versus J debate. Honestly, there's never enough peanuts as far as we're concerned.

Want to shake it up a little? Even if peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were once considered pretty fancy , you might want to expand your options. Swap out the super-sweet strawberry sauce for Dairy Queen's tangier raspberry or go even more old school with banana instead of jam. Finally, you can forego fruit altogether and aim for a Fluffernutter experience by combining peanut butter topping with a portion of marshmallow cream. We do advise you to stick with the addition of pie pieces, if possible, as they add a nice crunch to your Blizzard. This one was pretty good, even if we could have used more peanut flavor, so we're giving it a tasty seven out of 10.

Mocha Latte Blizzard

The secret Dairy Queen Mocha Latte Blizzard is for all those times you're stuck between getting coffee and getting ice cream. Ask for this Blizzard by ordering chocolate soft serve with coffee and dark chocolate syrup added. The recipe calls for whipped cream, which you can leave off.

For coffee lovers, this Blizzard is rich and enjoyable. The coffee flavor is on the stronger side, which may be a reason to skip this one for some. However, the taste of this shake is still very balanced: The strong coffee is equalized by the sweet ice cream, which is toned down by the dark chocolate, which is accented by the strong coffee (again). The Mocha Latte Blizzard is lacking in texture since it has no mix-ins, which are most of what makes Blizzards unique, but the scrumptious flavor did more than enough to compensate.

Our only beef with the Mocha Latte Blizzard: When the heck do you order it? As much as we hate to say it, you can't (and shouldn't) have an ice-cream based coffee drink in the mornings when you would normally have coffee. But there's caffeine in this Blizzard, so you may not want it as an after-dinner dessert if you're sensitive to caffeine. This Blizzard may be best as an afternoon treat. We dub the Mocha Latte Blizzard a 7 out of 10, but we recommend choosing a candy mix-in to spice it up a bit and ranking it yourself.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Blizzard

The Cinnamon Toast Crunch secret menu item has gotten a lot of attention since Dairy Queen re-introduced the Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough Blizzard. It seems that fans went a little off the rails when DQ first pulled the fall flavor, so the company decided to bring it back. Luckily for us, the regular Snickerdoodle version is super tasty without any extra add-ons, but we were still pretty excited to try this secret menu item: Just ask for a couple of scoops of those fall-only delicious pie chips mixed into a Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough Blizzard. Online reviews have said that this combo truly tastes a lot like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, which we thought would be pretty hard to live up to.

So did it measure up? Oh baby, did it ever. It tasted so much like the cereal that we were a little stunned. The creamy soft serve, the crispy pie pieces, and the super sweet, cinnamon cookie dough came together to make this Blizzard another top hack. It had the taste of traditional Snickerdoodle cookies — meaning loads of brown sugar and cinnamon — but the crispy, buttery pie pieces combined with the creamy soft serve nudged it even closer to the real thing. This is another of our top picks, easily scoring a 10 out of 10 for both taste and ease of ordering.

Puppy Chow Blizzard

Midwesterners unite! The secret Dairy Queen Puppy Chow Blizzard is about to become your favorite dessert. Everyone else, don't be alarmed: This beloved regional snack is not made with dog food, as its name might suggest. Traditional Puppy Chow is Rice Chex cereal doused in peanut butter and melted chocolate, then coated in powder sugar. It's messy, sugary, and oh-so-good. The Blizzard version is vanilla soft serve, graham pieces, fudge, and peanut butter, blended up and topped with whipped cream. The online recipe also called for Dairy Queen's graham base, but our location didn't have this in stock, so we omitted it.

As delicious as all of these Blizzards were, this one is our favorite. It tastes just like this Midwestern childhood treat, but better. (Because adding ice cream to something can only improve it, right?) Peanut butter can easily overpower other flavors, but it was very balanced in this Blizzard (there could have even been just a touch more peanut butter, in our opinion). We would have liked just a bit more texture in this Blizzard and will ask for extra graham pieces next time, since actual Puppy Chow is meant to be crunchy, after all.

Even if you've never had the real thing, you'll be happy you gave the Puppy Chow Blizzard a try. An easy 10 out of 10 for this secret menu item.

Chocolate Orange Blizzard

This one was a bit of a wild card for us and our Blizzard master, if we're being totally honest. This was the only one on the list that raised eyebrows with Dairy Queen staff, and we're pretty sure they've seen everything when it comes to crazy concoctions. In fact, the employee helping us out admitted that many customers like to play fast and loose with their orders and just let the staff decide on what kind of Blizzard they end up with.

We took full advantage of DQ's affiliation with Orange Julius to try out this particular taste innovation. Start with a plain vanilla soft serve base and add the beloved chocolate chunks and a pump of orange concentrate. This made for something that was both sweet and super tangy. This hack was pretty good, we admit. Maybe a little too heavy on the orange concentrate, but orange and chocolate are such a great combo that, with a little tweaking, we think this could be actually craveable. This one was so easy that we might even try making a Blizzard-inspired treat at home, tinkering with the ratio of orange to chocolate chunks, but that's just us. A better balance of flavor would have taken this to an easy eight out of 10, but with the overwhelming amount of zingy orange concentrate, this version only landed at a six.

Sugar Cookie Blizzard

Have you ever craved a sugar cookie, but just didn't have the gusto to spend the whole afternoon in the kitchen? The secret Dairy Queen Sugar Cookie Blizzard is an easy compromise. Made with vanilla soft serve, rainbow sprinkles, marshmallow creme, and graham pieces (we substituted this in for the out-of-stock pie chips), this is the perfect DQ treat for sweet-tooth-havers out there who aren't big on chocolate. At this time of year, it's possible the location nearest you will have a Frosted Sugar Cookie Blizzard — with sugar cookie pieces, icing, and sprinkles — available on the menu for a limited time.

We went with the DIY version. This Blizzard is creamy and very sweet, no doubt thanks to the marshmallow creme. You could leave it out if you really wanted to; however, it seems to be a necessary component for the sugar cookie flavor. The sprinkles and graham pieces add nice texture, but we think the graham flavor altered this Blizzard slightly, and that pie chips would have worked better for this recipe.

Don't wait until pie chips are back in stock to give this a try, though. You'll enjoy it all the same with graham pieces, because they add that crunchiness of a cookie you'd expect in a cookie-inspired Blizzard. It's a 9 out of 10 for the Sugar Cookie Blizzard, and once pie chips are back in stock, we just might try this again to redeem that lost point.

Cookie Jar Blizzard

Who took the cookie from the cookie jar? Whoever did decided to throw the cookies into a blender with ice cream and see what happens — and we approve. The Cookie Jar Blizzard is made with vanilla soft serve , Oreo cookies, cookie dough, and hot fudge. This secret menu resident is actually fans prolonging the special flavor of the month for April 2019, and since all its components are permanent menu fixtures, cookie monsters everywhere need not worry about getting their fix.

The chunks of cookie dough and Oreo pieces mesh well in this cookie mash-up, but there is more Oreo flavor than there is cookie dough. The crushed Oreo throughout the Blizzard can be tasted in each bite, but no cookie dough flavor is evident until you're lucky enough to scoop up a chunk.

If you're lucky enough to visit a Dairy Queen offering the limited time Frosted Sugar Cookie Blizzard, you could add those cookie pieces in as another delicious element to this Blizzard — or you could try adding in Nilla Wafers for more crunch and vanilla flavor. On its own, this secret menu treat is perfect for when you can't decide what dessert to have. A 7 out of 10 for the Cookie Jar Blizzard.

Tropical Sunrise

The Tropical Sunrise Blizzard might cause a little confusion, depending on your location. When we ordered this secret menu item, we were told that it contained pecans, coconut, and pineapple while at a second location, we were given banana, pineapple, and coconut. But that's more likely because of the nebulous nature of secret menu hacks — their secrecy can make them kind of hard to pin down (just ask anyone who's ever been met with a blank stare after ordering something they saw online). Apparently, the banana, pineapple, and coconut version was a limited-time offering known as the Hawaiian Blizzard and is still regularly requested, so that's the one we went for.

To be honest, we had some misgivings about this one before we tried it. But it was quite good, to our delight. The pieces of coconut were really tiny — small enough that they didn't mess up the texture of the smooth ice cream while still infusing the Blizzard with a nice touch of coconutty flavor. And who can deny the appeal of pineapple chunks with that DQ ice-milk ice cream? The banana addition might be overwhelming for some palates, but we found that it was still a decent hack, especially for something that contained absolutely no chocolate. We gave this one a solid seven out of 10 — maybe not our first choice but certainly not a disappointment.

Sneaky Ninja Blizzard

If you'd like to partake in a fun game played by Dairy Queen employees , try out the secret Dairy Queen Sneaky Ninja Blizzard. This employee-made secret shake is made of vanilla soft serve with four ingredients added: cake crunch, fudge, marshmallow creme, and one more mystery ingredient of the DQ team member's choice — the "something sneaky."

Your fourth mystery ingredient could be anything from flavor syrup to candy to coffee. Our local Blizzard master decided on a banana — and it was, in fact, sneaky. We had no idea what was in our Blizzard until taking the first bite, and while we weren't sure what to expect, we definitely didn't expect banana. This just so happened to taste like a banana split, so the surprise was thoroughly pleasing. If you are up for a surprise and want to let a DQ employee have a laugh, ask for the Sneaky Ninja — and brace yourself, because you never know what you're going to get. Of course, be sure to share any food allergies or sensitivities you have first.

We give the Sneaky Ninja a 7 out of 10. The concept is fun, and we enjoyed interacting with the people making our ice cream. And as an added bonus, our Sneaky Ninja was delicious ... a banana split in a cup.

I ate all 26 Blizzards at Dairy Queen and ranked the flavors from worst to best

  • Dairy Queen's Blizzard is made with thick, soft-serve and a range of customizable mix-ins
  • As of July 2023, I've had 26 Blizzards from the menu , including seasonal and limited-edition flavors.
  • I've ranked the Blizzards from worst to best, and the best is still the seasonal s'mores.

Insider Today

Since August 2020, I've been eating and ranking every Dairy Queen Blizzard I could get my hands on.

Each creamy dessert contains a range of mix-ins and the chain regularly offers both limited-edition and seasonal flavors that don't always return, so definitely check the menu at your nearest location before going to try any of the options below.

Here's how the Blizzards I've tried so far stack up, from my least favorite to my favorite.

Cotton candy Blizzard

dq trip

The first problem with this special, seasonal Blizzard was the texture. It had these chewy, colorful bits of sugar that felt a bit off — like they weren't supposed to be in there and a child added them in at the last minute.

But the unbearable sweetness of this Blizzard is what earned it a spot on the bottom of my list. This dessert just tasted like pure sugar and my teeth still hurt thinking about it.

I could picture younger kids absolutely loving this, but I can't see myself ordering this one again.

M&M Blizzard

dq trip

Many people picture M&Ms when they think of a classic ice-cream mix-in. That symphony of crunchy, chocolaty bits with smooth, creamy ice cream is a kid's kryptonite on a summer afternoon.

My M&M Blizzard came exactly as expected — with the bite-sized candies slightly crushed and evenly dispersed throughout the vanilla. It was a simple, yet satisfying option.

But this Blizzard was pretty underwhelming, especially when compared to the other ones on the menu. I think it could've benefited from the addition of a brownie to make the chocolate flavor of the candies stand out more.

Royal Rocky Road Trip Blizzard

dq trip

Full disclosure: I don't care much for rocky-road ice cream, so I knew I wasn't going to be wild about this one from the start.

Like rocky-road ice cream, this Blizzard contains all of the essential flavors: chocolate, peanuts, and marshmallow. This dessert has a single marshmallow core in the center of the cup with the ice cream around it and it comes with brownie chunks to offset the strong vanilla flavors.

I can see this being a dream for anyone who loves marshmallows, but I felt that the core overpowered the rest of the Blizzard. At one point, I thought the peanuts were missing, but they'd really just collected at the very bottom of the cup, which made every bite pretty inconsistent.

Very Cherry Chip Blizzard

dq trip

This Blizzard absolutely lives up to its name. To me, it tasted exactly like a cherry slushie.

It's very, very sweet but I didn't find that totally offputting. DQ makes this using a mix of vanilla and actual cherries, so there were bits of the fruit in the mixture, which offered a nice pop of tart flavor that made my lips pucker.

My order also contained plenty of tasty chocolate chunks, which cut through some of that intense fruity sweetness.

I believe this Blizzard will appeal to a lot of people (Shirley Temple fans, looking at you), but it was too sweet for me to find it enjoyable beyond a few bites.

If I wanted a fruit-forward Blizzard, I'd go with the Raspberry Fuge Bliss.

Wonder Woman Cookie Collision Blizzard

dq trip

With such a fun name, I had high hopes for this limited-edition Blizzard. Unfortunately, it underwhelmed me.

Essentially, It's a hodgepodge of chocolatey flavors, but instead of using brownies as the dessert mix-in of choice, it's chocolate chip and chocolate-chocolate cookie dough, which are pretty much indistinguishable from each other.

This had potential, but the similar toppings didn't add much in terms of flavor. If you were to blind taste-test me, I'd probably have a difficult time distinguishing between this one and the regular cookie dough Blizzard, which is disappointing.

Heath Blizzard

dq trip

I was eager to try the Blizzard because I think Heath is an excellent, underrated candy bar .

The Heath candy bits were finely chopped and distributed well throughout the ice cream. This gave the entire Blizzard a strong toffee taste, which I personally loved.

However, the biggest issue with this one was the texture. Toffee is notoriously sticky and hard, especially when paired with a cold substance like ice cream. As I ate my Blizzard, I noticed the small bits of the candy were getting stuck to parts of my teeth, which made me unwilling to finish it.

Oreo Dirt Pie Blizzard

dq trip

Although I personally never attended summer camp myself, I have many fond childhood memories of eating Oreo dirt pies at birthday parties.

Normally, the dessert is made using pudding as a base, but here, DQ is putting its own spin on this with its soft serve.

I appreciate the sentiment DQ was trying to convey here, and I'm sure kids will go nuts for this, but I'm not sold on the gummy worms being mixed into the ice cream.

As a topping? Fine. But I didn't care for getting random bites of chewy candy in my ice cream. There's already enough texture going on with the cookie pieces and fudge. Plus, it's not like they add that much for flavor.

On a more positive note, I loved how the added extra fudge crumbles really doubled down on the chocolate flavor.

This costs the same as the regular Oreo Blizzard, so you're not necessarily out any extra money if you order this over the other. But for my money, I'd much rather get the regular Oreo Blizzard.

Nestle Drumstick with Peanuts Blizzard

dq trip

This Blizzard brought me back to childhood days at my Grandma's house.

I'd often dig in the back of the freezer looking for chocolaty Drumstick treats, only to devour an entire cone within a couple of minutes. And every time, my fingers (and the floor) would end up covered in a melted mess.

Years later, I'm still a fan of Drumsticks, but I rarely eat them to avoid dealing with that mess. Thankfully, DQ has solved that problem by creating a Blizzard with Drumstick bits blended right in that I can enjoy with the convenience of a spoon.

And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. As is the case with most of its blizzards, the vanilla ice cream made for the perfect base, accentuating the peanut-waffle-cone-Nestle chocolate flavor in the mix-ins. Peanut was definitely the predominant flavor, but it wasn't so overpowering that I didn't taste the chocolate.

I wish the peanut bits were larger, though, since they kept getting stuck in my teeth. I understand the peanuts on a drumstick are tiny as is, so there was no changing this.

Still, if you're looking for a peanut-butter flavor that's not too chocolatey or sweet like the Reese's one — this Blizzard is sure to satisfy.

Oreo cookie Blizzard

dq trip

Although I enjoyed this Blizzard, it was essentially the same thing as cookies-and-cream ice cream.

On a positive note, DQ's signature vanilla soft serve tasted mellower and had a more delicate finish than what you'd find at the grocery store. I also liked that I could taste the icing bits in the Oreos.

But I probably wouldn't order this one again unless I was on the go and craving something familiar. For the price, I would rather purchase a pint of high-quality cookies-and-cream ice cream from the grocery store.

Choco Brownie Extreme Blizzard

dq trip

As a chocolate lover, I was surprised that I didn't like this one as much as I'd hoped. This Blizzard is proof that there can be too much of a good thing.

This comes with brownie pieces, chocolate fudge, and chocolate chunks. I enjoy all of those things individually, but when they're all packed together in an 8-ounce cup, it's almost too much.

It was clear to me that the chewy brownie chunks were the star of the show , and the other two chocolaty components didn't add much. The brownies were so fudgy that they blended together with the fudge chunks, too. Part of me feels like the fudge chunks were thrown in just to give this Blizzard its "extreme" name.

The kicker of this dessert is that it came with vanilla ice cream — not chocolate — but I honestly couldn't taste it underneath all of the toppings.

Butterfinger Blizzard

dq trip

This Blizzard consists of vanilla soft serve and a generous amount of nutty, scrumptious Butterfinger bits. I immediately noticed the little orange bits sticking out from the creamy soft serve, so everything looked like it had been mixed well.

Taste-wise, this blizzard was good, but not incredible. The candy bar (or bars?) were ground incredibly fine, which made it so the nutty flavor blended seamlessly into the soft serve.

However, I felt the candy's chocolate coating got completely lost in the mixing process. That wasn't a deal-breaker, but I still wouldn't call this Blizzard my favorite.

Snickers Blizzard

dq trip

The symphony of textures makes Snickers one of the US's most beloved candy bars , and the same holds true when it's paired with delicious vanilla soft serve.

Yummy chocolate, smooth caramel, and crunchy peanuts gave this one a pleasant blend of different flavors and without overpowering the ice cream itself.

Of the candy-themed Blizzards I tried, this was one of the better ones.

Brownie batter Blizzard

dq trip

Don't ever try to tell me that brownie flavor and brownie-batter flavor are the same thing — they're not. This Blizzard is evidence of that, as it had an almost malted flavor to it, which made it slightly sweeter than other chocolate ones. I absolutely loved it.

This tasted like someone froze a bowl of brownie batter. Even better, DQ was not skimpy about the brownie chunks. I got a bit of chewy, fudgy brownie in every single bite down to the bottom of the cup. They also didn't fall into the trap of having a weird grainy taste to them.

Reese's peanut-butter cup Blizzard

dq trip

As advertised, this Blizzard came with vanilla soft serve and noticeable chunks of Reese's peanut butter cups. This made me happy because it meant it contained actual chocolate, not Reese's Pieces, which taste like pure peanut butter to me.

As expected, everything tasted great. The Reese's chunks had that familiar melt-in-your-mouth flavor that I know and love. However, the further I got into my Blizzard, the less peanut butter cups there were, and the less enjoyable it became.

Still, if I had to choose a candy-themed Blizzard, I'd probably order this one again over some of the others.

Peanut-butter puppy chow Blizzard

dq trip

Puppy chow — or "muddy buddies" depending on where you grew up — is a common snack at many a childhood sleepover, movie night, holiday party, or school event. It's a treat made using basic cereal like Chex, melted chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar.

I'm not surprised Dairy Queen turned it into a mix-in. Still, I wasn't blown away by this flavor.

It was tasty, and the peanut-butter flavor came through nicely on each bite. However, in my order, the few squares of puppy chow in the mix were clumped toward the bottom. Luckily, when I did eat a piece, it was delicious and nicely softened under the weight of the ice cream while still retaining a slight crisp.

The pieces also added a subtle bit of salt that's missing with the Reese's Blizzard.

Oreo fudge brownie Blizzard

dq trip

Like the chain's traditional Oreo Blizzard, this comes with vanilla soft serve and chewy bits of Oreo cookies. The only difference is that this takes it to the next level by adding globs of yummy, fudgy brownies to the mixture.

This was good but it wasn't much of a standout to me because it seemed like the Oreos were reduced to the background.

The brownies dominated the entire dessert, which wasn't a problem for me as a chocolate lover, but it made me question whether the Oreos needed to be there.

Turtle pecan cluster Blizzard

dq trip

The blend of buttery pecans, caramel, and vanilla on this Blizzard was absolutely divine. I also liked that my order contained pieces of whole pecans.

But I found the chocolate fudge shavings to be unnecessary because they weren't noticeable at all. If you didn't tell me they were in there, I would assume they weren't.

That said, this Blizzard earns high marks for its uniqueness and great taste.

Caramel Drumstick with peanuts Blizzard

dq trip

You may be thinking "Wait a second, Dairy Queen has always had a Drumstick Blizzard with peanuts." Correct. But this one is different. This one has all that and caramel.

The addition is very subtle — visually, it looks no different from the other Drumstick Blizzard. But as soon as I took that first bite, it was clear this was a huge step above the original.

The caramel topping was blended seamlessly into the ice cream, offering a touch of yummy sweetness that paired incredibly well with the peanuts and chocolaty drumstick pieces.

In all, it's a wonderful combination of slightly salty, sweet, and nutty flavors.

People who are hoping to get huge globs of gooey caramel might be disappointed. But if you want something that's delicious and sweet, but not quite as intense as some of the candy-flavored Blizzards, this will hit the spot.

Oreo brookie Blizzard

dq trip

Just when you think DQ hasn't done enough with Oreo, the chain adds tiny, dime-sized chunks of brownie-and-chocolate-chip-cookie hybrids. The more cookies, the better.

Upon the first spoonful, I thought this Blizzard tasted like a typical cookies-and-cream one. But once I got a piece of the brookie, I understood why this was so special. The brookie pieces brought a yummy, fudgy chewiness that was absolutely delightful in contrast to the slightly crunchy Oreos.

The chocolate-chip-cookie component brought in a buttery sweetness that popped against the vanilla ice cream. It was kind of like eating chocolate-chip-cookie dough and cookies-and-cream ice cream with brownie chunks all at once. It was delicious.

Even though the chocolate was the standout flavor here, I didn't find it as intensely cocoa-flavored as the Oreo brownie Blizzard. Since the chunks of brookie are smaller than a coin, they didn't really overpower the Oreo flavor.

In all, this is a winner.

Oreo cheesecake Blizzard

dq trip

Much like the cheesecake Blizzard, this came with a decent amount of cheesecake chunks. The only difference is that this one's also mixed with Oreo cookies.

I accidentally ordered this with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla but, even so, it tasted the same as the chain's vanilla soft serve but with a hint of chocolate syrup.

In my opinion, this is a great option for the cheesecake lover who also wants a little bit of chocolate. The ratio between the two ingredients was fairly even, which meant no one taste dominated the other. In fact, they enhanced each other. The cocoa in the Oreos popped each time I got a bite of them with the creamy cheesecake.

Chocolate chip cookie dough Blizzard

dq trip

Cookie dough is one of the most popular ice-cream flavors in the US, and I totally get why.

The dough bits in this Blizzard were just the right size and, best of all, there were so many of them. This Blizzard was heaven with a great ratio of ice cream to cookie dough.

The chocolate fudge really made this Blizzard standout from standard, store-bought cookie dough ice cream from the grocery store. The fudge made the ice cream chocolaty, which brought out the sweetness of the doughy bits. It was a nice change from the chocolate-chip ice cream cookie dough's usually paired with.

Girl Scout Thin Mints Blizzard

dq trip

Frozen Thin Mints are a thing for a reason , and I'm glad DQ found a way to harness that perfectly cool, chocolaty deliciousness into a Blizzard.

Here, the ice cream had a nice, delicate minty flavor that tasted like a dead ringer for the iconic cookie. The use of vanilla soft serve with mint swirled into it lends to a pleasant, refreshing sweetness that prevents this from tasting like a cup of toothpaste.

The bits of Thin Mint cookies were basically the cherry on top here: perfectly chewy, with their smooth chocolate flavor dancing on the creamy, cool vanilla-mint swirl.

This ended up being one of my favorite Blizzards. The addition of a fudgy chocolate swirl is the only thing that could make this even better.

Raspberry Fudge Bliss Blizzard

dq trip

My initial thought on seeing this Blizzard was that it seemed the most "adult" to me because it's the only one with actual fruit in it.

By far, the best part of this Blizzard was the fresh raspberries. They added a layer of tartness that counteracted the intensity of the chocolate-fudge chunks.

I just wish there were more of them in the Blizzard because once I got a quarter of the way in, all that I tasted was vanilla and chocolate.

Frosted animal cookie Blizzard

dq trip

This Blizzard has the perfect level of sweetness. The small amount of frosting on the animal cookies gave it just a hint of that sugary taste without being too much.

The cookies also had a nice chewiness to them and they stood up well to the ice cream without getting soggy.

Best of all, after a few bites, the colorful icing and sprinkles on the cookies melted into the soft serve, which made the entire thing taste like a delicious confetti cake.

Royal New York Cheesecake Blizzard

dq trip

I'm always a fan of a good dessert within a dessert when it's executed well — fortunately, this Blizzard was a hit.

The creamy cheesecake chunks made for a superb mix-in for Dairy Queen's soft serve: They had a slightly chewy, yet smooth texture that stood up well to the ice cream. I also found that they had a pleasant, sweet flavor that didn't taste artificial or overly sugary.

But it was the strawberry mixture in the center that seriously elevated this Blizzard. As soon as I got to the core, strawberry flavor began to seep into every corner of the cup, which gave every subsequent bite that burst of berry flavor.

S'mores Blizzard

dq trip

When two classics come together, you're bound to end up with something delicious . That's exactly what happened with the s'mores Blizzard, which is why it was my absolute favorite.

Unlike the Royal Rocky Road, which was overpowered by too much marshmallow, and Chocolate Brownie Extreme which was too chocolaty, the s'mores Blizzard had just the right amount of everything.

Instead of mini marshmallows, which can easily turn rubbery when cold, it has chocolate chunks that contain marshmallow filling. It also has graham-cracker pieces and graham-cracker dust that courses throughout the entire Blizzard, causing the ice cream to adopt that irresistible, toasty flavor.

Because of the graham-cracker dust, every bite tastes like a s'more. In other words, this Blizzard is the perfect summer treat, and I can't wait to order it again soon .

DQ Celebrates Blizzard with 25-City Road Trip

Dairy Queen is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its iconic Blizzard treat by taking a custom-designed Blizzardmobile to cities in 25 markets in the U.S. and Canada where through Aug. 13 it will distribute more than 75,000 free new Mini Blizzards. The Mini Blizzard, which is about half the size of a small 12-ounce Blizzard and will be available in DQ restaurants beginning Aug. 1, is the focal point of an integrated effort that also includes TV ads, online photo and video contests promoted on Facebook and new Blizzard flavors like Ooey Gooey Caramel Brownie. A tie-in with DQ’s ongoing support for Children’s Miracle Network of hospitals hopes to raise $1,000 in contributions per market.

Oreo, which is the top-selling Blizzard flavor, is a major sponsor of the tour, along with other popular flavors including Butterfinger, Heath and Reese’s.

Shaped like DQ’s 25th anniversary birthday cup topped with an Oreo Blizzard, the Blizzardmobile is bright blue with red spoons on its truck cab and serving as windshield wipers. Upside down Blizzard cups have replaced the side mirrors. Red lips, a staple of Dairy Queen’s TV commercials, adorn the front, side and rear of the truck. The side panels open into the truck’s interior where more than 2,000 Blizzard samples are served in each city.

The Blizzardmobile makes three stops within each market: a larger venue such as a volleyball tournament or minor league baseball park, a DQ store in each market that is determined by Blizzard fan club members’ votes and a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

The full event experience, which takes place at larger venues for two hours, includes an emcee who interacts with the crowd, music, photo opportunities, free Mini Blizzards and the “Blizzard Blaster,” a giant, upside-down inflatable Blizzard cup filled with chilled, swirling center air where attendees in goggles and arctic mittens fashioned with oversized spoons for 25 seconds to try and grab coupons amid swirling confetti for prizes.

“We want everyone to know the Blizzard is turning 25, and also let people know that beginning Aug. 1 they can get these Mini Blizzards at their Dairy Queen stores,” Michael Keller, chief brand officer at International Dairy Queen, told Buzz. “We’ve already got 2.5 million Blizzard Fan Club members and our Blizzardmobile tour is simply another opportunity to spread the word, generate fun and enthusiasm for the brand and raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network all at the same time.” Agency: GMR Marketing, Milwaukee.

Dairy Queen Grill & Chill

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We had a cool treat here. Boys had Blizzards. One had a dairy-free Dilly bar. So glad they had it. Ate outside and watched the cars drive by. Basic Dairy Queen, but not all havethe dairy-free option, so we were happy about that. Would return.

Every 3 or 4 months we can't go another day with a large Blizzard. Snickers is our favorite. That way you can combine two sinful delights onto one

Don't normally review fast food places but this was great. Flamethrower 1/2lb burger tasted fresh, clean and spicy. Not like fast food at all and utterly delicious. $5 lunch deals for rest of family great value and all a cut above usual burger outlets.Ice cream sundaes... devoured quickly. Got to be 5* for sheer value More

Dairy queen.... Long wait for food right around closing time... They all seemed more interested in chatting with each other than actually paying attention to people in line waiting for food. Maybe less focus on who did what today in school and more attention to... the person standing behind the counter waiting and waiting. Then they tried to close the door when I was still waiting for my food. LOL But it was very clean! More

We had gift cards so we opted to visit the Main Street DQ while in Cedar City. We did an inside visit though drive thru and outdoor seating are available. The staff was friendly, efficient and competent. We did both chill and grill with a... $5 super snack and Blizzard all prepared well. Our total was $10.72. More

The service was good and the seating area was clean. The prices were also very reasonable. We will be returning.

You can not beat Dairy Queen chicken fingers n gravy. The staff is always friendly. The place is as clean as you can expect at lunch time.

DQ is always a treat and very reliable. But this one is nice and new, very clean and the staff look/act like they enjoy working there...not like some we saw putting in time at other DQ's. It was very refreshing. And they were super busy... at 7 PM on a Monday night...at 29 degrees outside. Go figure...we all go for ice cream when its freezing outside...Yes, we do! What is better to us than a chocolate malt Blizzard on a cold night in January...nothing! Others around us were all happy and enjoying their own special treats and even some late night meals. Its a great DQ in a wonderful Utah town. More

We wanted ice cream to go. Chocolate mm blizzard and a butter fingers blizzard. Staff was friendly and helpful.

We like to get a nice summer treat here at the Dairy Queen. The location is clean and pleasant, with all those familiar DQ treats we all love so much. The location is easy to find and convenient, right on Main Street.

Stopped at the drive up for lunch on 10/8, about 1:00. Ordered a five buck lunch to share w/ Tefa (Border Heeler, 35 pounds, a real sweetheart) . Ordered a butterscotch sundae with it. The sundae was made with the hard shell plastic stuff that... they dip cones in. Had a ball of ice cream with a hard plastic shell and belt around it. I asked the blond girl if that was the normal stuff they use, and she looked at me like I was nuts and said yes. That stuff is awful. I ended up tossing it in the trash. Tefa liked the burger, I ate the bun w/ lettuce and tomato. The fries were good. Probably not going back. It was only another 90 minutes to home. I should have waited. More

Out on a long road trip, not really hungry but need something - stopped for a dessert but ordered Mushroom Swiss Burger and Crispy Chicken Sandwich along with a malted and Blizzard. Just enough protein, not too much fat and enough carbohydrates to actually give... us the energy to drive another 1 hour to our stopover. Restaurant is clean, bathrooms definitely useable even to somewhat picky people and service is quick. More

This is one of the places I like to stop in Cedar grab a burger and have some ice cream. Good stuff!!! All their burgers and the chicken strips are on point. I love most of their sundaes and my favorite blizzard is the Turtle... substitute peanuts for the pecans. Great people, great service, and very clean restaurant. More

While visiting Cedar City and touring the National Parks in the area, we stopped here after dinner for a welcomed cool dessert after a hot day. DQs are fun establishments with a good selection of ice cream desserts. My boys had a banana split, my... wife had a blizzard and I nibbled on both! They're refreshing, if somewhat filling, desserts and they're particularly good on hot days. The decor at this particular DQ is a cut above average. I've only been to a few and this one stood out. It's sort of by itself on South Main and parking is easy. The staff is pleasant and helpful here. Definitely stop by here if you're visiting Cedar City. More

Not to comfortable with young woman wearing a gun in a family dinner. Would prefer she got a conceal permit.

19 Popular Dairy Queen Menu Items, Ranked Worst To Best

Dairy Queen restaurant exterior

When you want to get a nice, cold treat in the middle of the summer, where do you go? If you live near a Dairy Queen , there's a good chance that you stop by from time to time to grab something to eat. But far too many people order the exact same thing over and over again. It's too easy to get stuck in a routine.

Don't let that happen to you! At a fast food joint that has as many options as you'll find at Dairy Queen, you shouldn't limit yourself to just one or two items. The only problem is, how do you know you're getting something you want before you actually buy it?

We're here to do some of the heavy lifting here by ranking some of the most popular Dairy Queen menu items from worst to best. While there aren't many options we actively dislike from Dairy Queen, we don't love everything equally. Taking a look at this ranking can help you decide what you want to order the next time you're going through the drive-thru or eating in.

Ready to discover some of the best foods Dairy Queen has to offer? Let's take a closer look.

19. Plain vanilla cone

When you're going out to eat, whether you're headed to a nice restaurant or just stopping by your local fast food place, you want to know that you're spending your money wisely. It's not bad to spend some extra cash on food when you have it, but just make sure you're getting the most bang for your buck. That certainly won't be the case when you order the plain vanilla cone from Dairy Queen.

When it comes to ice cream, you really can't get any more basic than this. It's just a cone with a little scoop of soft serve vanilla ice cream on top. Now, don't think we're going to hate on this soft serve, because we're not. It does taste really good. But let's be honest with ourselves: Is it really worth the money when you could buy a whole carton of ice cream instead?

Besides, vanilla is the most boring flavor out there. People literally use it to describe other things that are boring. There's really nothing to say about the flavor of this cone, because it just couldn't be more blah. If you've got a picky toddler in the back seat, maybe a plain vanilla cone will be the way to go. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

18. Brownie and Oreo Cupfection

We just complained about how the vanilla cone isn't exciting enough, but we have a different complaint about the brownie and Oreo Cupfection from Dairy Queen. Sure, it starts with the same vanilla soft serve, but then the fast food restaurant goes way off the rails with this menu item. We don't normally think you can have too much chocolate in your life, but this menu item proved us wrong. We warn you, this dessert is definitely not for the faint of heart.

First, Dairy Queen adds a triple chocolate brownie to the mix, which might sound great, but this brownie is so unbelievably sweet that you probably won't be able to eat more than half of it. Next up are the Oreos, which are crushed up to make a sort of topping for the dessert. To make things even more chocolatey-sweet, they also add a rich chocolate sauce. It comes to a head with a marshmallow topping that's somehow even sweeter than the rest of the dessert.

If this sounds like an unbelievable amount of sugar in one serving of ice cream, you couldn't be more right. We think it's over the top and is just too rich, so unless you have the most aggressive sweet tooth imaginable, you should probably stay away from this option.

17. Peanut Buster Parfait

Some people love peanuts. Others can't stand them. Still others are seriously allergic to them. If you don't fall into those last two categories, you have the option of choosing the Peanut Buster Parfait . These days, when you read the word "parfait," you might think of a light and healthy breakfast option that's served with fresh fruit and whole grains; however, you should know after reading this far that you shouldn't assume that to be the case when you stop at your local Dairy Queen. Instead, you'll find a dessert that just doesn't do it for us.

This treat again uses vanilla ice cream as its base and is layered with chocolate sauce, but we think there is way too much chocolate involved here. It made us want to throw in our spoons and give up on dessert entirely.

Then come the peanuts. You might think that a nice, salty crunch would add an enjoyable flavor and texture to an otherwise sweet and creamy dish, but the peanuts we got here were hard, dried out, and barely salty at all. They provided some crunch, but that was the extent of their usefulness.

16. Bacon Cheese Grillburger

If you're looking for the perfect after-dinner ice cream treat, Dairy Queen might just be the place to go. But if you're looking for the ideal burger, you might want to pass on this fast food option and find something else. Why? We just can't get behind the bacon cheese Grillburger. This quarter-pound beef burger is topped with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and, of course, bacon. It also comes with ketchup and mayo if you're into that kind of thing. And it's served on a toasted bun, which is much too light and airy to properly hold the contents of this burger.

While this sandwich seems innocuous enough, it's definitely not very high on our list of must-haves at Dairy Queen. The toppings are usually kind of sad, and the patty itself isn't very juicy. Though it might not be the worst burger in the world, it's kind of a bummer when you compare it to most other popular fast food burgers. As far as we're concerned, why would you bother? Just grab your burger from a fast food spot that does it better . You can stop by for ice cream at Dairy Queen after you're done.

15. Triple chocolate brownie

Here's another dessert that we think is just too rich for anyone's good. The triple chocolate brownie  is just as unnecessarily indulgent as it sounds. It all starts with a massive chocolate brownie that's quite dense, so just a few bites and you'll find yourself getting full. The brownie is filled with chunks of chocolate, which is what really takes it over the top. A fudge brownie filled with even more chocolate? We get what they were trying to do here, but it's overkill. And it doesn't end there. You'll also find chocolate fudge drizzled over the top of the entire dessert. You'd have to have the biggest chocolate craving in the world to find this dessert appetizing after the first few bites.

Don't forget about the ice cream, either. The brownie is served with Dairy Queen's famous soft serve. You didn't think it would come out naked, did you? While the cold creaminess does add a nice touch, it still doesn't cut down on the sweetness at all. Overall, this is a real mess of a dessert that you probably shouldn't try to eat by yourself.

14. Hot fudge sundae

Okay, we want to be fair here. The hot fudge sundae from Dairy Queen doesn't actually taste bad at all. It starts with the classic soft serve you expect when you go to any Dairy Queen location, and then the hot fudge topping is added to make it a little bit more interesting. While it's similar to the vanilla cone, we rate this one a bit higher because of that chocolate drizzle, which is more balanced with the ice than it is in the peanut buster parfait. It makes the flavor slightly more exciting, and it gives you at least a little bit of variety when it comes to texture. It's also more convenient to eat your ice cream from a cup instead of a cone, especially if you go through the drive-thru and try to eat the treat in the car.

So all in all, this dessert isn't bad. We just probably wouldn't buy it, since it's another one of those dishes you can probably make at home for way cheaper. Just buy some ice cream and some chocolate sauce, and you're good to go. Of course, not everyone wants to buy several servings at once, and sometimes you just have to treat yourself when you're out and about. So if that's your situation, go ahead and try this simple treat.

13. Oreo Blizzard

We bet you were wondering when a Blizzard would show up in our ranking. They are perhaps what Dairy Queen is known best for (even though they're not technically ice cream , and neither is Dairy Queen's soft serve), and they certainly take up a hefty portion of the menu. They're also great options because they're easy to eat and they're something that you can't get just anywhere. While the Oreo Blizzard is our least favorite of the popular Blizzard flavors, that doesn't mean we don't like it at all. Because at the end of the day, when you mix Oreos into any ice cream situation, you know you're going to get something good.

That being said, there are just so many desserts these days that involve ice cream and Oreos. The flavor certainly isn't groundbreaking, and it's not like you can't get something similar elsewhere. Sure, you might not be able to turn other Oreo desserts upside down without making a mess all over the ground, but since that seems to be the main appeal when it comes to getting an Oreo Blizzard, we probably wouldn't go out of our way just to grab one.

If you're already there, though, and you happen to love Oreos more than anything, then this might just be the dessert for you.

12. Butterfinger Blizzard

Next up on our list is the Butterfinger Blizzard , which you'll only find at Dairy Queen. If you love Butterfingers, you might be asking yourself why this Blizzard isn't ranked higher on our list. Well, that's because we have a hot take: Butterfingers just aren't the best candy out there. We're sorry we had to break the news to you this way. Of course, if you disagree with us, we totally understand if you have to move this particular Blizzard up in your own personal Dairy Queen ratings. But for us, the humble Butterfinger just can't live up to the gloriousness that is the candy in some of our other favorite Blizzards.

The peanut butter flavor from the Butterfingers is strong, which you'll probably like if you're a big peanut butter fan; however, we wish there were more actual pieces of candy in the soft serve mix. In ours, it seemed like it was mostly vanilla ice cream, which is a bit of a bummer when you're expecting the treat to be laced with your favorite candy.

If this were one of the only Blizzards on the menu, there'd be a good chance we'd ordered it a lot. But when you compare it to many of the other Blizzards that are simply out-of-this-world delicious, it makes sense that the Butterfinger Blizzard just didn't manage to get as high a rating as some of the others.

11. Misty Slush

When you go to Dairy Queen, you're probably expecting a treat that's, well, filled with dairy. But not everyone can have dairy in their diet. Whether you're lactose intolerant or just trying to consume less of it, it can be a bummer to go to a fast food drive-thru only to find out that you can't really order anything off the dessert menu. But when you go to Dairy Queen, that certainly won't be the case with the Misty Slush .

The Misty Slush is just what it sounds like: a slushie drink that comes in a variety of fruit flavors. You can choose from lemon lime, blue raspberry, mango, cherry, or strawberry kiwi flavors. Our advice? If you're looking for something that's a bit different, the mango slushie is definitely the way to go. You won't find this on just any fast food menu board. However, several of the other flavors are just as good — particularly the strawberry kiwi.

In the middle of the summer, these Dairy Queen treats can be some of the best items on the menu. Most of the time, however, we would prefer a richer dessert when we're making the trip to our local DQ.

10. Chili cheese dog

Not every fast food restaurant sells hot dogs. In fact, if you take a look at many of the most popular fast food places in the world, there won't be a single hot dog on the menu. If you're the kind of person who loves weenies, though, that's got to be really disappointing. This is why you might end up considering Dairy Queen your safe haven. Not only is there a traditional hot dog you can order, there's the chili cheese dog as well.

It's pretty basic as far as chili cheese dogs go. It starts out, of course, with the plain hot dog. They then pile it high with chili and cheese. That's it.

While we really love the hot dog itself, the addition of the chili can be slightly dubious. In its review of the menu item,  Fast Food Menu Prices said, "The chili is a bit better than it used to be, but there's nothing particularly interesting about the taste. There's not a lot of seasonings or flavor, so it's a bit on the bland side." That's a strike against it, but in the end, this is a menu item we would order again if we wanted something savory the next time we go through the drive-thru.

9. Snickers Blizzard

When it comes to ice cream mixed with candy, Dairy Queen really has it covered. Think about your favorite chocolate candy and it's probably available as a Blizzard flavor. So you shouldn't be too surprised to see the Snickers Blizzard on the menu. It's definitely a classic, and if you haven't tried it before, you should get on it to see if you like it as much as we do.

Like all Blizzards, the candy bar is broken down before it's mixed with the ice cream. That leaves you with chunks of candy to enjoy throughout your treat. There's something so satisfying about eating a spoonful of creamy soft serve only to be met with a chunk of something chocolate and covered in caramel.

We love this Blizzard selection, even if we aren't the biggest fans of Snickers themselves. They are some of the heaviest-tasting candy bars out there, probably because they're packed with chocolate, caramel, and nuts that all compete for your taste buds' attention. Snickers lovers, pick up this treat as soon as possible! Everyone else, wait until you see what we have at the end of this ranking.

8. Banana split

Sometimes you just have to go with a classic, especially when you're ordering dessert. There are a ton of classic ice cream dishes , not just at Dairy Queen, but you can't really get more traditional than the banana split . DQ might not have invented the dessert, but they certainly do it justice with their version.

It all starts with three scoops of soft serve, which are placed inside of a — you guessed it — split banana. Then, each scoop of soft serve is topped with its own sauce: one features chocolate, another has strawberry, and the last has pineapple sauce on top.

One thing we love about this dessert is the fact that it has so many different flavors going on. At the same time, those flavors come together really well — it doesn't taste like you're eating three different random desserts. We also love that this treat has so many different types of fruit flavors in it: That's not something you usually get when you order ice cream.

The only downside we can see to ordering this dessert? It's pretty massive. It's probably not something that you'll want to eat alone unless you haven't eaten anything in days. If you really want to try it, grab a friend and convince them to share with you.

7. Crispy chicken sandwich

Just because you're at an ice cream place doesn't necessarily mean you just want a cup full of sugary soft serve. That's where Dairy Queen's sandwiches come in. While we weren't a huge fan of the Grillburger with bacon, we think the crispy chicken sandwich is actually really good. The bun isn't our favorite, but the chicken itself is surprisingly juicy. The breading on the outside provides an unexpected crunch, while the lettuce and tomato on top add a bit of freshness that really takes this sandwich to the next level.

Is the crispy chicken sandwich simple? Absolutely. But sometimes you don't need all the bells and whistles when you're at a fast food place. If you're looking for one of the best savory and most substantial items on the menu, you know you can't go wrong with this chicken-based classic. Try it out for yourself the next time you visit Dairy Queen.

6. Dilly Bar

Remember when you were a kid and the ice cream man would drive through your neighborhood on sunny afternoons? There was nothing more exciting than picking the very best ice cream treat from the truck and eating it with your friends in the hot sun. If you're nostalgic for that kind of experience and just happen to find yourself at Dairy Queen, you might want to opt for the classic Dilly Bar . This is the ultimate ice cream on a stick. The round slice of ice cream is covered in rich chocolate that forms a crust to protect the soft serve inside. And when you bite into it, you get both the candy-like shell of the chocolate and the ice cream inside. When these two flavors mix and mingle, it's magic.

We love that these are so easy to eat, so it's something you might want to grab when you're on the go. It's also a treat that kids and adults alike will love. And unlike the dipped cone, it's pre-dipped, and there's no cone or container involved.

Oh, and good news. If you don't eat dairy but still want that classic Dilly Bar taste, you can always opt for the non-dairy Dilly Bar instead.

5. M&M Blizzard

Now, you could always take a trip to McDonald's to grab an M&M  McFlurry , but you're better off taking a trip to Dairy Queen for the real deal: The M&M Blizzard . This really is a magical treat that you'll want to eat again and again once you've tried it. That's because M&Ms pair perfectly with DQ's creamy soft serve. Since they're already in small pieces, they blend with the ice cream really well, and they add just the perfect amount of crunch when you bite into them.

Another thing we love about M&M Blizzards is the fact that the coloring from the M&Ms can bleed and mix with the ice cream. This gives you a rainbow-colored treat that's as pretty as it tastes. This might be a simple mix of ingredients, but simplicity is all you need when you have a treat made of such delicious components.

4. FlameThrower Grillburger

Okay, okay. We know we weren't complimentary about a different burger on the menu at Dairy Queen. But if you must grab a burger when you're at this fast food spot, then the one you'll want to order is the FlameThrower Grillburger — if you like your food hot and spicy, that is. That's because this burger is decked out with a ton of spicy ingredients that make it mouthwateringly delicious. You've got the melted pepper jack cheese. You've got the jalapeño bacon (yes, you heard that right). Then you've got the FlameThrower hot sauce on top to bring it together. With all of that flavor, you know you're going to get something good.

If you're sensitive to spicy foods, then this might not be the burger for you. But we're ranking it high on our list because we think it pairs perfectly with the sweet and creamy desserts on the rest of the menu. Sometimes, you just need a little bit of contrast, and this spicy burger provides that perfectly. If you haven't tried this burger yet, it might be time to check it out.

You might be wondering how the fries at Dairy Queen have managed to snag such a competitive spot on this list. After all, you might not think of Dairy Queen as having the best fries in the fast food universe . But we have to admit, the fries here are really good. They have the perfect amount of crispiness to them, and they're just salty enough to give you the savory taste you're craving.

But that's not the only reason these fries rank so high. The main reason is that you're definitely going to want to order them to dip in your ice cream.

Dipping these salty fries into your sweet soft serve is going to be a dream come true. Sure, it might not be the most conventional move, but people who've been dipping their fries in their shakes for years can tell you that dipping fries in thick and creamy drinks and desserts is a great move when you're at a fast food restaurant. Don't take our word for it: Go ahead and order some DQ fries the next time you're getting dessert. You can thank us later.

2. Reese's Blizzard

You can argue with us all you want, but at the end of the day, there is only one thing we're totally sure of: Reese's are the best candy ever. Salty peanut butter coated in a soft milk chocolate exterior? To us, it's a dream come true. Luckily, Dairy Queen apparently thought so too because they created the Reese's Blizzard . If you already love this candy, you know you're going to be getting the best dessert ever when you combine the candy with DQ soft serve.

But even if you don't already love Reese's, you have to give this Blizzard a try. The salty peanut butter plays off the sweet chocolate and soft serve really well, creating a depth of flavor you won't find in most other Blizzards on the menu. When you get your first little chunk of Reese's in your spoonful, you're going to realize why we gave this treat the No. 2 spot on our list.

1. Royal New York Cheesecake Blizzard

If you're looking for the best of the best at Dairy Queen, look no further than the Royal New York Cheesecake Blizzard . This dessert is going to blow you away. Inside the soft serve you're expecting, there's a core of strawberry topping. It's a surprise when you first dip into it, but once you taste it, you'll realize that it's pure genius. The cheesecake flavor with the strawberry topping is seriously out of this world, so it's no wonder that it's the top tanked Blizzard flavor at Dairy Queen  and the best overall menu item at the fast food chain.

Matthew of GrubGrade agrees with us, saying, "If you ask me, cheesecake is at its best when it just slowly melts in your mouth, more or less dissolving. That's how this Blizzard is: The cheesecake pieces have that butter-like quality, and spun up through Dairy Queen's machines, the rich and slightly tangy pieces provide a memorable flavor and evolving texture contrast. Meanwhile, the graham pieces give the Blizzard tiny spots of crunch and graham flavor, working in perfect unison with the cheesecake pieces."

We couldn't have said it better ourselves. From the cheesecake to the soft serve to the graham cracker bites, it's clear why this Blizzard deserves first place.

Dairy Queen at the Staten Island ferry terminal: Will it ever reopen?

J an. 25—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Dairy Queen popped onto the New York City food scene in June 2013 at the St. George Ferry Terminal, setting Blizzard fans abuzz. In October 2023, the franchise seemingly took a little siesta, putting a "closed for renovations" sign on the lowered gates.

Will it be back?

No, the Orange Julius is dead at Space 101 on Ferry Terminal Drive. Indeed, with the ferry shop and a defunct Mariners Harbor location, the chain and its signature ice cream-based concoctions are currently finished in the borough.

Eleven years ago when Dairy Queen came to Staten Island, it made the Big Apple's news circuit. After all, it had been too long — 30 years — since the chain had served its popular desserts in the city. In the early 1980s, the concept could be found locally on Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp, Clove Road in Sunnyside and on Forest Avenue in West Brighton. In 2016, a second outlet of the brand came back to Forest Avenue, this time in Mariners Harbor with the DQ Grill & Chill format. That closed almost two years ago and the property still is for lease.

On some levels, DQ lingers on, at least as a respondent in Richmond County Supreme Court. According to the court filings in April 2023, the restaurant overstayed its welcome, by the landlord's standards. The NYC Economic Development Corp.'s terms had expired on Feb. 14, 2022. Gates went down in October 2023, according to a rep from DQ headquarters. Litigation is ongoing.

In May 2023, Burger Kitchen Inc. dba DQ Grill filed a lawsuit in Manhattan along with other terminal tenants against the NYCEDC. In the original motion included among its complaints, "Plaintiffs have invested substantial time, effort and financial resources to build their businesses at the subject premises, but as a result of the onset of the COVID19 pandemic and defendant's wrongful actions as set forth herein, they have been deprived of the benefit of their lease agreements."

The plaintiff attorneys included images of vagrants and vandalism to which their clients were subjected to in the terminal, due to a lack of security. According to the court records in the original complaint, among other things, the landlord continued "allowing hawkers and other unauthorized individuals to sell competing goods and solicit business from customers at the subject premises."

This Burger Kitchen Inc. is not affiliated with another, more infamous eatery of the same name. In a memorable Kitchen Nightmares episode, Gordon Ramsay had overhauled a failing Burger Kitchen operation in Los Angeles, Calif. Long story short, the business' success was complicated by a family warring with each other. The operation ultimately failed.

Attempts to reach the owner of Burger Kitchen dba DQ Grill, formerly of Staten Island, were unsuccessful.
