What to Expect

The Big Island is exactly that – big! It can be overwhelming to work out what areas to visit together and how much time everything is going to take to see. With so many choices, you will need a plan!

Below, we have divided the island into 4 areas to explore that range from half day to full day. These provide a logical way to explore all of the best things to see and do all over the island.

Most visitors stay on the Kona side of the island and join the tour by driving on Hwy 19 or 11. Or From Hilo, drive north or south on 19.

Includes: 4 suggested itineraries to explore across the Big Island;

The Big Island’s most famous and popular place to visit is Volcanoes National Park .

Allow a  full day and head to the most active volcano on the planet. From the Kona side of the island, we follow around the bottom of the island along Highway 11 all the way to the Park. We’ll have time to review the volcanic forces at work behind the creation of the Hawaiian Islands, or you may prefer to embrace the Hawaiian legends version as it takes approximately 2.5 hours to arrive.

You can also tour directly from Hilo on Hwy 11.

Inside the park, the commentary continues on all park roads, from Halema’uma’u down to the ocean and back. There are many amazing formations created by eruptions spread over hundreds and thousands of years. There are 2 driving routes in the Park and expect to spend minimum 2-3 hours exploring.

Please note: after the volcanic events of 2018, the Park is reopening in phases. Best to check for latest status and updates with the NPS link in FAQ below.

For the true adventurers, a full  Island Circle itinerary adds touring to the green or east side of the Island.  From the panoramic views along the Hamakua Coast  and the 442ft   Akaka Falls State Park   to peeks into the lush  Waipio Valley .   Not much has changed since its plantation days, though you won’t see donkeys plodding down to the shore with sugar bags strapped either side anymore.

Plan for time in and around  Hilo  with its Liliuokalani Gardens, and follow the Hilo loop tour route for nearby  waterfalls and lava tube caves.

Don’t try to include Volcanoes National Park to this day, there is just too much to see and do and you’ll run out of daylight hours.

Driving from Kona to Hawi is an amazing journey with beaches, a surprisingly arid coast at times, views to Maui, black sand beaches from cliff viewpoints and driving over an old volcanic mountain makes for an excellent 1/2 day or longer of sightseeing. Follow the tour as it drives a loop itinerary that gives us a fantastic sample of old Hawaii, modern Hawaii, awesome beaches and huge ranches.

Relax at the end of the road at the  Pololu Valley lookout,  and spot the black sand beach way below.  On the return drive, as we climb over the Kohala Mountain, you’ll discover Hawaii’s wild wild west and the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) around the rural and ranching areas of Waimea  before connecting back to the coast.

Pack your swimsuit and snorkeling gear for another  half day itinerary , this time driving south of Kona.

Kailua-Kona is the active hub of the western side of Hawaii and features energetic shopping and dining choices, mixed with historic landmarks and fun beaches like Magic Sands . Follow the road that heads south along the coast to tour through this vibrant area.

But then, we’ll quickly transition to areas of incredible Hawaiian cultural importance and sites that have been preserved for prosperity. Bring your snorkel gear for some excellent places to get close to fish and turtles too, especially at 2 Step .

We might enjoy a jolt of world famous Kona coffee right from a plantation before we connect with some of Hawaii’s significant cultural sites, the sanctuary at the Place of Refuge   and at  Kealakekua Bay . Then we’ll use Hwy 11 to circle back to Kailua-Kona.

Suggested Start Location

Kohala, Kailua Kona or Hilo – join anywhere along the route.

Suggested Time

Volcanoes National Park – Full Day

Island Circle – Full Day

Kohala North Loop  – 1/2 Day

Kona Coffee Coast – 1/2 Day

Driving Distance

The island is very large!  There’s more than 350 miles of driving to explore.

WHAT IS THE BIG ISLAND KNOWN FOR?

The Island of Hawaii, often simply referred to as the Big Island due to its size, is famous for its incredible natural attractions, including massive volcanoes, black-sand beaches and lush valleys.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT THE BIG ISLAND?

There really isn’t a ‘bad’ time to visit the Big Island , with relatively consistently warm temperatures year round. There’s really only two seasons in Hawaii: summer from May to October and winter from November to April. The off-peak, shoulder seasons of April to May and September to mid-December are when you’ll find the best value.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED ON THE BIG ISLAND?

If you really want to enjoy even a fraction of what it has to offer, you should plan on staying on the Big Island for at least four days , and ideally one week. You’ll want a full day in Volcanoes National Park and to drive the Island Circle, plus half days exploring the Kohala North Loop and Kona Coffee Coast.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK?

Ideally you’ll want to spend a full day visiting Volcanoes National Park . Most visitors spend 2-3 hours minimum inside the park and you will most likely run out of daylight before you get to see everything on another part of the island.

HOW MANY VOLCANOES ARE IN VOLCANOS NATIONAL PARK?

Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes : Mauna Loa, which last erupted in 2022, and Kilauea which saw its last eruption in 2023.

WHERE CAN I SEE LAVA ON BIG ISLAND?

Volcanoes are unpredictable, and this can change at any time. Please visit the National Park Service for the current status.

Trip Planning

Waipio valley access closure.

As of 25 February 2022, the County of Hawaii has closed the Waipio Valley Road to all visitors until further notice, including pedestrians, due to rockfall and landslide risks. Hiking trails in Waipio Valley are also closed, and the best way for visitors to currently see Waipio Valley is from the Waipio Valley Overlook .

Antique Shops & Paniolo Culture

Explore a town rich in paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture and Hawaii state history. Honoka’a is a great stop on your way down the Hamakua Coast or on your way to or from Waipi'o Valley Lookout . The cattle on Hawaii’s Big Island was originally gifted to King Kamehameha in the late 1700s, he let the cattle herd roam, reproduce and become feral for the next twenty years, which devastated local agriculture. In 1812, the King began allowing hunting of the cattle and in the 1830s, he returned from Mexico with three vaqueros (Mexican cowboys), and thus, Paniolo Culture was born in Hawaii. The sugar industry later brought with it, immigration of many Portuguese cowboys, as well. After the sugar industry dissolved throughout the state, these Portuguese cowboys continued to utilize their previous dairy experience on their land in Hamakua. Many of these same ranches have been passed down through generations and continue to be working ranches throughout the area today.

With a town rich in history, you can also visit, Buddhist temples, some of the oldest Japanese cemeteries in Hawaii and a great collection of Antique Shops. Take a step back in time at Gramma’s kitchen for breakfast or lunch, don’t miss trying some amazing fudge and have fun finding all of the historical murals through town that celebrate this rich, living history and culture.

Coffee Country

driving tour of kona hawaii

Coffee lovers rejoice because South Kona is renowned for growing some of the most expensive coffee in the world. As you head south out of Kailua-Kona, you’ll head to a higher elevation which is perfect for farming not only coffee but delicious tropical delicacies like passion fruit, guavas, Kona oranges, and macadamia nuts. Stop by the Kona Coffee Living History Farm just outside Captain Cook at mile marker 110 and learn about how the rare beans are grown and enjoy some tasty samples as well. Afterward, turn down Napoʻopoʻo Road toward Kealakekua Bay/Captain Cook’s Monument and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Park to take in a plethora of historical and culturally significant sites.

Pololu Valley Lookout

driving tour of kona hawaii

From Kona, drive north on the main highway toward the Kohala Coast where you’ll take Highway 270 north toward the little town of Hawi. The black lava fields will evolve into the rolling, lush pasturelands of North Kohala. Keep going until the road ends – you won’t be disappointed! When you turn that last corner, be ready for the eye candy of a lifetime as you soak up the indescribable, dramatic view at Pololū Valley Overlook. It is without a doubt one of the most magnificent, awe-inspiring views on the island.

Waipio Valley Lookout

driving tour of kona hawaii

Sacred Waipiʻo Valley is located on the northern Hāmākua Coastline. Called “The Valley of the Kings,” Waipiʻo is not only dramatically breathtaking but is also an important historical and cultural site on the Big Island. Over five miles deep with cliffs reaching up to 2,000 feet high, Waipiʻo Valley is home to the island’s tallest waterfall, Hiʻilawe, which tumbles 1,300 feet to the valley’s floor. Take in the views from the overlook at the end of Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive. Driving down isn’t recommended, as the road is extremely steep and is prohibited by most rental car companies. To get to Waipiʻo Valley, turn off of the Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19) onto Highway 240 at the town of Honokaʻa. Follow Highway 240 for about 9.5 miles where it dead-ends at the valley’s lookout point.

Akaka Falls

driving tour of kona hawaii

Located along the northeastern Hāmākua Coast, ʻAkaka Falls State Park is home to two beautiful waterfalls. A casual, 0.4-mile hike takes you strolling through an orchid-filled rainforest filled with lush ferns and bamboo trees. The paved footpath winds through this tropical haven toward the Big Island’s most famous waterfall, ʻAkaka Falls, which descends almost 450 feet into the stream below. To get to Akaka Falls, take Hwy 19 north from Hilo for about 20 minutes to the turnoff for Hwy 220 (west). The Hwy 220 turnoff is between the 13-mile and 14-mile posts. Follow the Hwy 220 signs through Honomū Town for about 3 miles. Don’t forget to lock your vehicle and take valuables with you. Enjoy!

How to drive around the big island of hawaii in one day.

drive around big island hawaii

Talk to many travelers who have been to the islands of Hawaii, and a majority of them will have spent most of their time soaking up the sun on the beaches of Maui or Oahu. While those are both beautiful islands, you’ll want to plan a drive around the Big Island of Hawaii. The island is so massive you could fit several other Hawaiian islands in it.

When I was on vacation with my family several years ago, we had nothing on our schedule for several days. That made me curious if we could spend a long day driving around Hawaii. As you see, it was possible, and thus I created this post.

While I recommend having a 5 day Big Island itinerary to truly experience the island, it’s fun to spend a day driving around it. I put Kona as the starting destination, as that’s where the main airport is, and most people tend to gravitate to that area. If you’re staying in a different part of the island, just start at that part of the itinerary in the morning and add on the rest as you go.

Tips for a Hawaii Road Trip

drive around big island motorcycle

Here are a few common questions you might have about your Big Island road trip.

How long does it take to drive around the Big Island of Hawaii?

To drive around Hawaii based on my itinerary, it’ll take about eight hours . However, that’s without making many stops, and you’ll want to spend time at these places.

To adequately see everything on this list and have enough time for meals, I would allow about 12 hours to drive around the Big Island. This itinerary for one day in Hawaii is lengthy but has you stop at the best places. Similar to a Big Sur day trip , you can see a ton in a day, but it’ll just be quite a lengthy day.

How many miles is it around the Big Island of Hawaii?

It’s about 300 miles to drive around the Big Island, and that’s just staying on the edge of it. You can easily add miles as you stop at random places or cut across the island.

Where do I rent a car on the Big Island?

It’s easy to rent a car in Hawaii, especially from the Kona International Airport. You can book directly on the car rental websites in advance so you’re ready to go once you get there.

Just take note that you’ll get an estimate online of how much it’ll be to rent per day, but the company will offer add-ons at the counter. They include GPS, which I recommend in the more remote parts of the island, and insurance. If you have auto insurance from your car in the United States, this may already cover rental cars, and make sure to check before you go.

What do I pack for a Hawaii road trip?

I loved exploring the Big Island in one day, but there are a few tips I have to make sure you’re comfortable. You may find my list of the best things to pack for Hawaii helpful before you go.

The west side of Hawaii is dry, while the east side is wet. There are also multiple elevation changes as you’re going around the island. While I made a road trip essentials list that I use for all road trips, here are a few things to add to your Hawaii packing list.

  • Waterproof phone case – Take it from someone who’s ruined their phone on day one of a beach vacation – a waterproof phone case is a lifesaver in a place like Hawaii. LifeProof | Amazon
  • Sneakers – cute, comfortable, and supportive for when you’re exploring (I personally wear my Skechers GoWalks on every single trip I take)
  • Cooler – make sure you pack a cooler full of snacks and water so you don’t go searching desperately for a shop when your blood sugar gets a little too low
  • Rain j acket – It may sound strange, but you’ll want to bring a waterproof jacket and a change of clothes. I was driving around in beautiful weather when out of nowhere came a complete downpour that drenched me. Amazon | Backcountry.com

I love using Roadtrippers for all my road trips because they show you all the fun stops to make along the way. You can get $5 off if you sign up with my code BTR5QTP .

Where to Stay on the Big Island

These places are an excellent base to start and end your Hawaii road trip at.

  • King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel – For a mid-range hotel on the water, stay at this hotel. It’s right in town so you can walk to plenty of stores and restaurants during your stay. (rates start at $230 per night; book your room on Booking.com or Hotels.com )
  • Hilton Waikoloa Village – This is a little north of Kona, but you’ll love how much privacy you have here. It’s a hotel you stay in when you want to treat yourself. They have fantastic views, restaurants, and even a little boat to take you around the canal that goes through the property. (rates start at $225 per night; book your room on Booking.com or Hotels.com )
  • Oceanfront Apartment – Enjoy beautiful sunsets from the lanai at this oceanfront condo. Oceanfront pool, jacuzzi, and poolside barbecue areas are available on the property too. (Rates start at $270/night)
  • Oceanfront Condo – A cozy 2 bedroom apartment with marvellous ocean views. Amenities such as Wi-Fi, washer and dryer, and beach towels are provided for your stay. Sleeps 4. (Rates start at $141/night)
  • 3-Bedroom Penthouse – This newly renovated penthouse is great for families (4-6 guests.) Amenities include an air conditioning unit, full kitchen with appliances, comfortable beds, and free Wi-Fi. (Rates start at $275/night)

How to Drive Around the Big Island in One Day

This is the 1 day Big Island itinerary I used during my trip, and I felt I was able to see most of the island. Here’s a quick itinerary of where to stop on the Big Island and how long it will take to drive to each point. This itinerary for one day in Hawaii has eight stops, and you can adjust them as needed by skipping some if you’re short on time.

  • Kona to South Point  (1.5 hours)
  • South Point to Green Sand Beach (driving 10 minutes, walking 1-1.5 hours)
  • Green Sand Beach to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park  (1 hour)
  • Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park to Hilo  (1 hour)
  • Hilo to Waipio Valley Lookout  (1.5 hours)
  • Waipio Valley Lookout to Hawi  (1.25 hours)
  • Hawi to Kona  (1.5 hours)

Need help planning out your road trip? I’ve been using Roadtrippers for years to see exactly how long it’ll take from one point to the next and find new places to add to my itinerary!

Stop 1 – Kona

kona farmers market

While it’s a massive tourist hub, Kona has a charm that I love. There are so many amazing things to do in Kona that you could spend several days here. Stop at one of the cafes here for breakfast in the morning, and take a casual stroll as the sleepy shops start to open up for the day.

Load up on flowing maxi dresses, or get leis made of real flowers. You can even send a real coconut home in the mail – they just put postage on it and off it goes! Kona is a great first stop for your drive around the Big Island.

The farmer’s market is my favorite part of the town. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 7 AM to 4 PM and has a wide variety of vendors selling their items.

You can buy beautiful handmade jewelry, wood-carved Hawaiian statues, and colorful flowers to name a few.

I recommend buying some fresh fruit for your trip here. Hawaiian fruit tastes so much better and sweeter than anywhere else I’ve ever had it. I’d also grab a sandwich at a nearby shop for lunch later.

Stop 2 – South Point

south point hawaii

Once you’re done with the market, head south to visit the southernmost point in the United States to continue your drive around the Big Island. This will take you about 1.5 hours to get to the main highway.

You’ll see a sign for South Point once you get towards the end, which you’ll take a right on and follow for about 10 miles.

The road takes you through some beautiful pastures full of cows and houses that are spread out. Once you get to the end of the road, park and carefully walk out to the edge to see nothing but the ocean for thousands of miles. This reminded me of visiting the north shore of Oahu, which was more remote than other parts.

What caught me off guard was all the people who had set up their fishing lines and were sitting in lawn chairs, patiently waiting to feel a fish pulling on their line.

I’m not sure if they ended up catching anything, but they seemed to be just fine relaxing with their buddies, beer in hand. You can also jump off the cliffs at a designated point, but it was closed for some reason when I was there. I recommend adding this peaceful spot to your Big Island 1 day itinerary.

Stop 3 – Green Sand Beach

green sand beach hawaii

Hopefully, you’re wearing your tennis shoes and comfortable clothing, as this is the part of your drive around Hawaii where you finally get your steps in. A few minutes’ drive from South Point, follow the sign for Green Sand Beach and park in the small lot.

Grab your lunch and a water bottle, and start to walk straight towards the water. The trail isn’t marked well at all, but you’ll see a road once you get close to the ocean, which you’ll take a left on.

This isn’t the most leisurely hike, so be in somewhat good physical condition. The two ways to get there are either following the very dusty road (but you have to move for cars constantly) or following the shoreline along the water (look where you’re walking, as it gets pretty jagged in parts).

One tip – do NOT try to drive your rental car on this road because you’ll ruin it. This is strictly for off-road vehicles due to the harsh conditions of the road. Parts of it get extremely narrow, and there are many significant dips in the road, so there’s no way an average car can get over them.

The hike is about three miles one way, after which a tiny beach will appear over the hill. Head to the back of the hill to go down the combination of ladders and rocks and then pick a spot to relax and enjoy your lunch.

The sand doesn’t look green from far away, but you can see the green color shine through when you pick it up. I couldn’t quite capture the color in my pictures, but trust me – it’s worth seeing in person! It’s one of the more unique stops on your drive around the Big Island.

Stop 4 – Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

hawaii volcanoes national park

You’ll probably be tired from your six-mile hike, so enjoy the rest you’ll get on the drive to the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park . You continue up the main highway going north on the east side of the island, and the signs for the park are pretty obvious.

The entrance fee is $15 per motorcycle and $20 per car, and this covers everything in the park. You can also use it for up to seven days if you choose to come back later.

This National Park has plenty to do, so you can decide how long you want to spend here based on when you want to get back home. Lava vents are all over the park, which are just small vents the volcanoes let steam off through.

There are several overlooks with small visitor centers that are great ways to learn more about the area, and you can even see live cameras from the lava flow far below. There are also viewing platforms to see the steam coming up from the volcanoes.

I went during the day, but I heard you can see the lava’s glow in the crater at night. This is one of my favorite stops on the drive around the Big Island.

If you go through the National Park all the way east towards the water (take the road on the right just before the booth where you paid to get in), you can see the site of Mauna Uluʻs 1969 eruption.

Houses and streets used to be here, and you can see how the lava just demolished everything in its path on its journey to the sea. New life is growing among the hardened lava, which was an odd yet beautiful sight to see.

I love volcanoes, so this was one of my favorite stops on my drive around the Big Island. If you’re curious about other national parks in the United States, check out this list of national parks by state .

Stop 5 – Hilo

hilo hawaii beer

This city is the other central town on the island. You could spend a whole day here exploring the boutique stores, so consider coming back if you have more time on your drive around Hawaii.

They have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from for dinner, which is perfect since you’ll likely be starving by now. I like going downtown by the water to choose from the line of restaurants and bars that line the street across from the sea.

Hilo is right on the water on the northeastern side of the island, so pick a spot in one of the many parks to watch the sunset.

There’s a farmer’s market full of local goodies for those who haven’t done enough shopping yet. If you go on the first Friday of the month, they also have a night market which I’ve heard is a fun experience.

Just a note – the drive time from Hilo to Kona is two hours. If you’re getting tired at this point, it’s probably best to end your Hawaii road trip and take Saddle Road back. The road cuts through the island, so you don’t have to go all the way up and around.

This ends up saving you a ton of time. However, if you still have some energy left from your drive around the Big Island, stop at the observatory on the way back!

Stop 6 – Mauna Kea Observatory

Have you ever watched the stars from the top of a volcano? Now you can! This observatory is about 45 minutes from downtown Hilo and is on the way home if you’re staying in Kona. When figuring out your itinerary for how long to drive across Hawaii, this is something you can add if you have all night or skip if you want to get back.

Go here when it’s starting to get dark out and wait for the sky to darken to see the stars pop. One part of what I couldn’t get over in Hawaii was how dark it gets due to the lack of light population. I’ve never been able to see the stars so easily every single night.

If you’re continuing from Hilo and headed north, continue with the following stops.

Stop 7 – Waipio Valley Lookout

waipio valley

King Kamehameha I grew up in this area and played a significant role in the island’s history. Due to this, it’s called the Valley of the Kings and is five miles deep and one mile long. Make sure to stop by Hiilawe Falls on your drive around the Big Island, the island’s tallest waterfall. It’s a unique area to put on your Big Island 1 day itinerary.

You can access Waipio Valley Overlook by driving to the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor. If you want to go into the valley, you’ll need to be with a guide to hike or go on a horseback ride. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles can go into the steep area, and most rental car agreements won’t let you go in this section.

Stop 8 – Hawi

hawi drive around the big island

For your last stop of seeing the Big Island in a day, visit the northern part of the island, Hawi. This small town is a great place to watch the sunset go down. If you look hard enough, you can almost see Maui. There are several small shops, restaurants, and even a post office here.

Congratulations – you now know what it’s like to drive around the Big Island in one day! While this is a long day, it’s amazing to see everything the island has to offer on your Hawaii road trip.

This post and all your pretty pictures made me so homesick! I’m from Maui, so this really reminded me of home. I’ve never driven around the Big Isle, but I have driven all the way around Maui, which is the second largest island in the Hawaiian chain! If you go back, I highly recommend Maui. I may be a bit biased… but it’s the best island 🙂

Daytrip to the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii

A great way to spend a day if you're staying at one of the resorts in the Kohala region of Hawaii Island, the Big Island , is to take a driving tour of the Kona Coast. Along the way, you'll see some great scenery and we'll make a few stops that you'll really enjoy. This Google map will help you plan your trip and show you where the stops along the way are located.

Chances are that if you've stayed at one of the many great resorts that extend along the entire Kohala Coast , you've arrived at Kona International Airport , rented your car, headed to the airport exit and made a left turn on the Queen Ka'ahumanu Hwy (H-19) for the drive north to your resort.

A surprising number of visitors never explore what lies to the right of that airport turn, along the island's Kona Coast.

We'll begin our daytrip at that airport exit since we can't know at which resort you're staying further north or if you're actually staying in Kailua-Kona itself.

From Kailua-Kona to Honaunau With Stops Along the Way Back

The most efficient way to make this drive is to explore the sites at the furthest distance first and end the drive in Kailua-Kona town where you can shop, explore the sites and have a dinner at one of the town's excellent restaurants.

The drive to our first stop takes us straight south along the main highway. Of course, being Hawaii, the road will change name three times along the way and change highway numbers once. What is first called the Queen Ka'ahumanu Hwy (H-19) will turn into the Kuakini Highway (H-11) and then the Mamalahoa Highway (H-11). Just keep heading south from the airport for about 27 miles. It should take you 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.

Keep your eyes peeled for City of Refuge Road (see map). When you reach it make a right turn. It's a difficult turn, so take it slow. You'll be heading northwest. In a little over a mile, you'll see a sign for Painted Church Road. This is our first stop.

The Painted Church

The Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church , or better known as The Painted Church, is an active church and is listed in the Hawaii State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. The doors are left open during the day.

In 1899 Father John Velghe arrived from Belgium. Together with the congregation, the church was dismantled and moved up the mountain to its present location. Father Velghe then painted the interior of the church with the numbers of biblical scenes and scenes portraying the lives of various saints. They were all done with ordinary house-paint. These paintings aided him in his pastoral duties since many of the Hawaiians were unable to read.

This is just a brief stop, but one worth the visit. Be sure to leave a small donation in the box at the door.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

Our next stop is about 4.5 miles or 13 minutes away. Head west on City of Refuge Road and you'll see signs for Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park .

Ancient Hawaiians lived under a very strict set of sacred laws that even their ali'i or royalty were obligated to obey. In most instances, the punishment for breaking one of these laws, or kapu, was death.

The only means to escape was to reach what was called the Pu'uhonua, or place of refuge. These places of refuge were scattered across the islands. Once you arrived here, you were safe from any punishment.

The Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is the largest of the surviving places of refuge. It is maintained by the National Park Service and there is a small fee to enter the Park.

Leave yourself at least an hour to explore the grounds. You will learn much about ancient Hawaiian culture, religion and architecture.

Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park

As you exit the National Historical Park, bear left and head northwest along City of Refuge Road hugging the coast. After about 3.2 miles or 9-10 minutes, you'll continue straight onto Puuhonua Road which descends down to sea level at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park .

With a good set of binoculars or a good zoom lens on your camera, you can look across the bay and see the Captain Cook Monument. It was at the location on the Big Island that Captain James Cook, first landed on this island in 1778. Cook was the first British explorer to make contact with the Hawaiian people. The Hawaiians believed that he was their god Lono. It was here that Cook died in a fight with the Hawaiians in 1779 when he returned to the island.

This is a good place to rest and perhaps have a bite to eat if you have brought a picnic lunch with you.

Kona Coffee Living History Farm

As you exit the park you'll be heading inland and higher in elevation. Make a left onto Lower Napoopoo Road and continue up this winding road for about 4.5 miles until you reach the intersection with Highway 11. Make a right turn. You will have been on this portion of the highway earlier in the day when you headed south. You're going to go less than 1/2 mile. Your destination will be on the right, the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.

The Kona Region of Hawaii Island is best known as the home of Kona Coffee , considered by many to be the best coffee in the world. Scattered throughout this region are hundreds of coffee farms of various sizes. Many are still operated by the descendants of the original Japanese settlers who first grew coffee in this area in the late 1800's.

The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is an excellent place to learn about the history of Kona Coffee and the people who grow it. See their website for admission prices, hours and tour schedule.

Greenwell Farms

Now that you have learned a bit about the history of Kona Coffee, it's time to visit an actual coffee farm. As you exit the Kona Coffee Living History Farm make a left on Highway 11 and drive a little over 2 miles back towards Kailua-Kona. Watch for signs for your destination which will be on the left, Greenwell Farms .

Greenwell Farms is one of the largest of the Kona Coffee farms. Not only will you have the chance to sample various coffee products. In addition, you can take a free walking tour of the farm which will take you right into the coffee fields. You'll also see how coffee is harvested and roasted. Tours run continuously from 8:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

Kahaluu Beach Park

By this point, it's like mid to late afternoon. There is just one more brief stop before you get to your final destination. That is Kahaluu Beach Park in the Keauhou area of the Kona Coast.

As you exit Greenwell Farms make a left on Highway 11 and head north. After about 6.5 miles, make a left onto Kamehameha III Road. The signs will be directing you to Keahou. After about a mile and a half make a right onto Ali'i Drive. In about 1/2 mile you will see a lovely bay and beach park on your left. This is Kahaluu Beach Park. It's next to the now-closed Keauhou Beach Resort.

The resort was closed in the fall of 2012. Kamehameha Schools, which owns the resort, plans to demolish the resort, restore the site to its original, historic land plan and use the property for cultural and educational purposes.

Depending on the state of the demolition, you may be able to walk to the recently restored Hapaialii and Keeku Heiau.

From the beach park, you can often see surfers in Kahaluu Bay and you may even be able to see one of the many Hawaiian green sea turtles or honu which frequent the area.

Kailua Village

As you leave Kahaluu Beach Park, continue down Ali'i Drive for about 5 miles and you'll be right in the heart of historic Kailua Village . Kailua Village is often referred to as Kailua-Kona in order to differentiate it from Kailua Town on the island of Oahu .

Kailua-Kona has lots of great shopping as well as plenty of great restaurants. By the time you get there, it will likely be time for dinner, so stay in town and eat!  Huggo's  has wonderful views of the bay, especially at sunset. They also have some of the best food on the island.

This will have been a busy day and we've only touched upon a few of the many places to see and things to do along the Big Island's Kona Coast.

Remember to view the  large Google map and step-by-step directions to the sites we have discussed.

driving tour of kona hawaii

It should come as no surprise that one of the best ways you can spend your time on Hawaii’s Big Island is by taking a Kona to Hilo drive.

You can find plenty of stops throughout the entire island. However, if you’re planning to drive from Kona to Hilo, you can take one of three routes. One goes directly through the center of the island, the second follows the southern coast, and the third goes along the northern coastline.

Here, we’re taking a look at all the stops you can make while driving from these two major towns on the Big Island to ensure you don’t have to choose between Hilo or Kona!

Table of Contents

Planning a Kona to Hilo Drive

The best route from Kona to Hilo depends on what you want to see during your drive. If you’re pressed for time, take the Saddle Road through the center of the island. It takes about one and a half hours to get between cities.

Now, if you’re looking to have a more leisurely and scenic drive, consider taking one of the coastal routes. The sites you’ll see along the way vary between routes. If you’re ending your trip back in Kona, consider taking the opposite coastal route on the return journey. This way you can get all the way around the island and see the top sites.

You should budget a full day to make the drive and stop to admire the landmarks along the way. You’ll encounter a few small towns where you can find bites to eat as well as gas stations. Start your day with a full tank of gas and you’ll likely have enough for the full drive.

If you need to rent a car for your trip you can browse Rentalcars.com to compare prices on car rentals on the island.

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

How Far is Kona from Hilo?

The distance from Kona to Hilo is 77.1 miles. This applies if you take Saddle Road across the middle of the island which takes you along the base of Mauna Kea. Driving along the southern route, it would take you about 3 hours to get from Kona to Hilo if you drove nonstop.

It takes about the same time to take the northern coastline route. Expect to encounter some traffic, but drive carefully overall. The coastal highways are curvy and sudden sharp turns aren’t uncommon. Besides, driving slower gives you more time to admire the scenery as you pass.

In total, estimate around 3 hours for your total drive time. Of course, exactly how long it takes will depend on how many stops you make.

Mauna Kea at sunset

Best Kona to Hilo Drive Stops

There are three routes that you can take for this drive. Below, we’re covering the northern and southern routes that follow the coastline. Note that Saddle Road through the middle of the island is the fastest route, but doesn’t have many stops to make for an interesting road trip.

Southern Route

While driving along the southern coastal route from Kona to Hilo, expect to find everything from sea turtles, great snorkel spots to ocean cliff jumping at South Point.

You’re passing through the best area to grow coffee on the island, so don’t pass up the opportunity to tour a coffee farm. End the day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the lava flow from Kilauea before heading into Hilo.

Greenwell Farms

Your first stop while taking the southern coastline route is Greenwell Farms in Kealakekua just north of the town of Captain Cook. If you’re a coffee person, you may want to spend more time visiting coffee farms in this area, but Greenwell is worth a visit if you only have time for one.

They offer a free coffee farm tour. During the tour, a guide will walk you around the plantation explaining the process of making Kona coffee all while showing off the coffee trees and machinery that makes a delicious cup of joe possible.

And of course, at the end of the tour, you can head over to their shop to leave with as many bags of coffee as you please.

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Once you’re fully caffeinated, head to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park. This landmark is one of the more popular ones that you’ll encounter. It’s also known as The City of Refuge and it’s estimated to be about 450 years old.

You can watch an introductory video to learn about the site before setting out on foot to explore it.

The lava tidepools here are some of the best on the island. Come prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and good walking shoes because it can get really hot as you’re walking around the park.

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Paradise Meadows

Paradise Meadows is hard to spot. After you turn off South Point Road to Hwy 11, you’ll see it almost immediately.

Here you can find some of the best chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, and honey on the island. You’ll also be handed free samples from vendors before wandering away to explore the farm.

Check out the fruit trees, aquaponics system, and art gallery located inside the house on the property.

Southernmost Point in the United States

Driving from Kona to Hilo isn’t complete without taking a slight detour to the Southernmost Point in the United States. Veer off the main highway to drive another 15 minutes before you reach the cliff.

It’s exactly what it sounds like: a cliff famous for being the southernmost tip of the U.S. If you’re feeling brave, you can leap off the cliff into the bright blue water below. Even if you don’t plan to jump, the view from the cliff is amazing on a clear day.

You can walk a 5-mile trail from here to reach Green Sands Beach — one of the lesser-known beaches on the Big Island.

Green Sands Beach

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is one of the most popular black sand beaches along the southern Big Island coast. This is largely due to the fact it’s one of the most reliable places to spot sea turtles.

You can lounge or go for a swim. You can explore the lava tidepools or marvel at the sea turtles sunbathing on the shore. While visiting any black sand beach on the island, keep your shoe choice in mind. Black sand gets much hotter much faster than other kinds of sand.

Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes and pack sun protection.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is a highlight of any Big Island itinerary . After all, it’s an inside look at the volcanoes that brought the Hawaiian Islands into existence.

Located in the foothills of Mauna Loa, it’s worth it to spend an entire day or two exploring the park. However, if you don’t have time, you can also stop in to get views of the volcano.

If it’s approaching nighttime, don’t miss the park. You can visit for an after dark viewing of the craters and see the lava glowing within them. It’s a view you can’t get during the day and an amazing sight, especially if it’s a clear starry night.

From the park, it’s about 40 minutes more along the way to Hilo.

View of Mauna Loa

Northern Route

The northern coastal route from Kona to Hilo passes by the island’s iconic valleys and overlooks. You’ll find waterfalls, rainforests, black-sand beaches, and historic landmarks.

Hapuna Beach

Start your day by grabbing Kona coffee and a pastry from in town and heading to Hapuna Beach. This is one of the most popular beaches on the island and it’s not hard to see why.

Its white sand beaches and crystal blue waters look like a postcard you’d see in a Kona airport gift shop. Visit first thing in the morning to experience it during quieter hours. Enjoy the view and eat your breakfast before continuing on your journey.

If you want to skip some of the coastal stops (or you want to make a detour to go horseback riding in the mountains), then consider heading inland toward Wimea here rather than to the coastal stops on the way to Hilo.

Hapuna Beach near Kona

Lapakahi State Historical Park

The Lapakahi State Historical Park is the perfect stop after you leave Hapuna Beach. This ancient fishing village is an estimated 600 years old.

Most of the remaining structures are rock walls, but there are a handful of buildings with roofs and walls that have been reconstructed to give visitors a look at what the village looked like hundreds of years ago.

Keep an eye out for the salt bowls within the huts where sea salt used to be made.

Hawi is a small and unassuming town along the highway you’re driving. It’s a great stop to grab a bite to eat or another cup of delicious coffee before you continue your route. It’s also notorious for its shopping.

Local shops line the streets of Hawi and feature everything from fine arts to clothing to groceries. Take your time, stretch your legs, and check out all the unique shops Hawi has to offer. If you’ve been on the lookout for souvenirs from your trip to Hawaii, this is the place to find them.

Pololu Valley Lookout

Pololu Valley is well-known, but less visited by tourists, which makes it a great stop if you’re aiming to break away from the Big Island crowds.

You’ll turn off the main highway to reach the parking lot. Keep in mind that the lot is tight and the road dead ends, so it’s more convenient to park further up the road and walk down. The view of the valley is stunning — lush green forests, rolling hills, and bright blue waves crashing against a black sand beach.

It’s worth the hike to the beach below, but be wary of the trail. It’s steep and uneven, so sturdy shoes are necessary and watch where you step. Once you reach the bottom, it feels like stepping into a scene from Jurassic Park.

Expect to take about 20 minutes to hike either way.

Pololu Valley

Waipi’o Valley Lookout

If you’re pressed for time and want to select one valley lookout, you should prioritize Pololu Valley. It’s more impressive and sees fewer people overall. However, if you have an extra hour to take a slight detour, head to Waipi’o Valley Lookout.

This lookout is on the opposite side of the ridgeline where you just were. You can’t quite see the back of the valley, but it’s still an impressive site. If there has been heavy rainfall, keep your eyes peeled for thin waterfalls falling from the opposite cliffside.

You’re no longer allowed to walk down to the beach due to unsafe hiking conditions.

Akaka Falls State Park

Your Kona to Hilo scenic drive is rapidly coming to an end. However, you can’t miss a stop at Akaka Falls State Park once you get past the town of Hamakua. This is one of the tallest waterfalls on the Big Island and one you’ll be happy you visited.

There’s a small parking fee to enter the parking lot. Once you park, take the 0.5-mile paved path to the outlook. You’ll instantly see a towering waterfall plummeting 442 feet into a pool below.

The surrounding cliffs are covered in green flora, making the entire sight an iconic one for the “wet” side of the Big Island. You can also experience some of the local floral at one of Hilo’s many botanical gardens.

Akaka Falls

Rainbow Falls

You’ve nearly arrived in Hilo. After a long day spent driving along the northern coast and exploring the many landmarks it has to offer, make one last stop at Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Falls is a broad waterfall, at times appearing like two waterfalls that join in the middle.

It’s where the Wailuku River cascades 80 feet into a dark pool below. Similar to Akaka Falls, the surrounding cliffside is covered in bright green plants.

This side of the island is where you’ll see its most impressive waterfalls, so spend some time exploring these state parks before returning to Kona.

11 Things You Must Do in Kona Hawaii Before You Leave

I lived on the Big Island for a year, getting to know all the nooks and crannies. I was also a a travel agent for 4 years, putting itineraries together and helping clients not miss out on the best things to do at their destinations.

With those skills and experiences, I’ve put together this list of 11 things you must do in Kona!

1. Manta Ray Night Snorkel

My favorite must do activity in Kona is the manta ray night snorkel . These friendly giants come within inches of your face as they feast on plankton.

Tours out of Keauhou Bay have a short 5 min boat ride to the manta ray viewing so it’s less boat time and more snorkel time.

2. Whale Watching Tour

I never get tired of seeing the whales in Kona. While you can sometimes see them from shore, the best way view them is by a whale watching tour so you can see them up close!

There are different kinds of boats to take, some are more leisurely while others can be adventurous.

3. Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Tour

Snorkel tours to Kealakekua Bay start in Kona and are a good way to spend a morning. If you are in Hawaii you need to snorkel to appreciate a whole other world below the ocean’s surface, and Kealakekua Bay is known to be the best spot on the island.

I had so much fun seeing the dolphins and hearing parrotfish crunching on corral!

4. Sunset Dinner Cruise

Body Glove is the only company that offers a sunset dinner cruise in Kona . And boy howdy is it awesome!

Good food, live music, and romantic sunsets! What more could you want?!

It may be cliche, but I love going to luaus because I get a chance to try authentic Hawaiian foods prepared better than I could make at home and being surrounded by a festive atmosphere and entertained with hula dancer and fire knife dancers.

6. Aiopio Fish Trap

I consider this a hidden gem because people don’t talk about this beach much. But I love visiting the Aiopio Fish Trap because I have never NOT seen a green sea turtle here. Plus the white sand beach is sooooo long!

7. Get a Toe Ring

At Aloha Toe Rings in the Kona Inn Shopping Village you can get exceptional service finding a toe ring that fits. I loved their designs and the experience so much, I went twice – one toe ring for each foot!

8. Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm

My favorite Kona coffee farm to visit is Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm . They have unique coffee roasts, delicious candy samples, and a pool to cool off in!

9. Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market

The best farmers market in Kona, in my opinion, is the Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market  next the Kona Outrigger. Friendly vendors, delicious food, and live music.

10. Foster’s Kitchen

The best meal I ever had on the Big Island was at Foster’s Kitchen . Their flatbread pizza had so much flavor and the cocktails were not skimpy on the alcohol.

Plus the view over Ali’i Drive and of the ocean was beautiful. Try to get there at sunset!

11. Ola Brew Co

Ola Brew Co has my second favorite cider EVER: Dragonfruit Lemonade Cider . It’s hot pink and refreshingly fruity.

They also serve many types of beer, hard seltzers, and hard teas as well as have a full kitchen for a meal.

And there you have it: my Kona must do list.

Did I miss anything?

Big Island Travel Planning Guide

Should I buy Hawaii travel insurance?

YES  - I recommend Travel Insurance Master because you can compare multiple options with one click. With plans starting at $5/day per person, why not give yourself piece of mind? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Is it safe to rent a car on the Big Island?

YES - It’s totally safe to drive on the Big Island. And unless you plan to chill by the resort pool the entire time, renting a car is pretty much a necessity on the Big Island! Jeep rentals are popular . I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental , as they have some of the best prices around.

Will my phone work on the Big Island?

PROBABLY  - Most, if not all, cell providers work on the Big Island. However, be prepared for some dead spots in the more remote parts of the island. For example, I always lose service driving through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park .

What's the best way to book my Big Island accommodations?

For Big Island hotels,  Booking.com is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking for an Airbnb condo with a kitchen and more space, don’t forget to check VRBO  for potentially better prices and options.

What's the best site to buy Big Island flights?

I recommend looking at Skyscanner for finding cheap flights. Pro Tip : check if flying into Hilo is cheaper than flying into Kona.

Do I need a passport to visit Hawaii?

NO  - If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Hawaii is part of the United States . If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.

What should I pack to the Big Island?

Pack for tropical weather but also prepare for colder than expected nights and early mornings, so a light sweatshirt is recommended. Check out this list of 5 Things Not to Forget to Pack .

It’s also cool that there’s palm frond thatched structure to remind you that you’re on ancient Hawaiian grounds.
