There’s no feeling quite like getting home exhausted from a great trip, downloading your travel photos and then realising you took so many more images than you initially thought. Sometimes the photos then end up sitting on a hard drive for months waiting to be edited.

One thing that helps me edit my photos much faster (when I finally get around to editing them) is presets. Honestly, without presets, I don’t know how I ever survived!

How To Use Lightroom Travel Presets To Transform Your Travel Photography

If you’re wondering how to better your photography, perhaps my own journey as a travel photographer can serve as some inspiration. I first fell in love with travel photography during a long backpacking trip abroad — but it wasn’t until I started using Lightroom travel presets that my photos really began to shine.

As I’ve grown as a photographer, one the number one tools I’ve come to love (and depend on) is Adobe Lightroom . My photography advanced to another level when I learned how to edit my photos in Lightroom . Specifically, when I began using travel presets , or custom photo filters made especially for travel photos.

You see, all the photos travel photographers and influencers post on Instagram have gone through a thorough editing process before they hit the feed. That’s because even the most powerful of cameras cannot capture a scene the way our own eyes can witness it.

That’s when Lightroom comes in. Lightroom presets can help completely transform an image — for example, it can make a sunrise image feel as magical as the actual moment it was taken.

If you’re new to Lightroom or photo editing, buckle up because this article will answer every question you’ve ever had!

What A re Lightroom Travel Presets?

Adobe Lightroom presets are essentially customizable photo filters that enhance the colors and exposure of your photos.

Presets are created in Adobe Lightroom , the most popular photo editing software in the travel photography and influencer industries. Lightroom offers far more editing power than apps like VSCO . It allows photographers to edit every aspect of a photo, from skin tone to the saturation of the sky.

It’s also incredibly user-friendly. You can master Lightroom a whole lot faster than Photoshop, which is probably why it’s become the go-to software among creators.

Lightroom travel presets are essentially photo filters that kind of work as an editing shortcut. A preset is a series of editing adjustments saved into a bundle that can be applied over and over to achieve a similar look as the original. Travel photographers and influencers use these custom photo filters to achieve a cohesive esthetic across all their photos.

Lightroom presets made specifically for travel photos typically enhance the greens of natural landscapes, the blues of tropical islands and the vibrant colors of colorful cities.

How Do Lightroom Travel Presets Work?

So how do Lightroom presets work, exactly? Let’s say you have a series of beach photos, and you want them all edited in the same way. You can edit one of them, then save the editing adjustments as a custom Lightroom preset called “Beach Vibes.”

You can then apply the “Beach Vibes” preset on every single beach (and non-beach) photo you have, the goal being to achieve a similar look as the original edit.

The magical thing about presets is you can manipulate them to create any aesthetic, from bright and airy to pastel -colored to moodier edits. Ever wondered how someone’s Instagram page looks so cohesive? How all the blue skies in their photos have the same hue? The answer is Lightroom presets!

The best way to find a preset pack that works for you is to follow photographers and creators that have an aesthetic you like. Odds are at least one of them sells Lightroom presets. By purchasing their presets you’re not only one step closer to achieving the photo edits of your dreams, but you’re also supporting that person’s creative work! It’s a win-win.

Should Y ou Buy Desktop or Mobile Presets?

Most photographers and creators sell two versions of their Lightroom presets: O ne for use on the Desktop version of Lightroom and the other for Lightroom’s Mobile app.

What’s the difference between the two?

First, Lightroom offers its mobile app for free. Yes, free! You can download the app from the app store and start playing around with edits right now .

The Desktop version of Lightroom is sold as a software subscription that costs $9.99 per month.

So why would anyone want to pay for the Desktop software when you can edit for free on your phone? There are a number of premium features that enhance your editing power on the Desktop version of Lightroom. The paid software also allows you to edit RAW images, which isn’t possible with the free Lightroom app.

Also, with the paid software allows you can sync your work between your laptop and your phone. Here’s a great explainer article on the differences between the Desktop and Mobile versions of Lightroom — and the extras you get with the paid version.

The decision between Desktop or Mobile presets depends on how you edit. If you’re primarily taking iPhone photos and editing on-the-go, then I’d recommend purchasing Mobile presets. If you use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, primarily shoot in RAW or plan on pursuing a professional career in travel blogging and/or photography, then I recommend Desktop presets.

I personally shoot in RAW and edit 99% of my photos on the Desktop version of Lightroom. I find it easier to make adjustments on a bigger screen, especially when it comes to editing a specific section of a photo — like if the left right corner was too dark, for example.

Are Lightroom P resets Worth It?

You can probably already guess my answer to this one.

Yes, yes and yes !

I get it — investing in photo filters may seem silly, expensive or even something you’re not quite ready for (so you think).

When I first started editing my photos in Lightroom, I edited each shot individually and tried to keep my edits somewhat cohesive by “copying” the adjustments from one photo to the next. This was incredibly time consuming, and I was never fully satisfied with how my edits came out.

Then I scored some pretty awesome travel presets , and my travel photography went from day to night.

I’m pretty sure that the first presets I ever used were created by Aggie of Travel in Her Shoes. I used these presets as a base for editing my photos, tweaking them here and there to achieve an aesthetic that I loved.

The more I practiced in Lightroom, the more I understood how to tweak presets to make edits feel my own. The thing about aesthetics is that mine is always changing. Every time I travel to a new destination, I chase after a new aesthetic to match my new surroundings. That’s the fun in editing travel photos: You can let each destination inspire your creative work.

I have invested in dozens of presets from my favorite creators over the past three years, including some pretty expensive ones. Do I regret a single purchase? No! Each preset collection I’ve ever purchased has helped lead me to where I am today.

Today I have achieved a dreamy travel aesthetic that I love. I’ve created my own diverse collection of travel presets that I use to edit every single one of my photos — and I know my presets are helping other people just like you on their own editing journeys!

What Happens If You Purchase Lightroom Presets & The Results Aren’t What You Expected?

Imagine this: Your favorite travel influencer just launched a collection featuring all the presets she uses to edit her incredible photos. You can’t wait to get your hands on it!

You download the presets onto your phone or computer, apply them on your favorite photo from your last trip to Paris … and you hate the result.

Don’t freak out! It’s happened to all of us. I’ve purchased plenty of presets that didn’t work well on my own photos. Does this mean that the creator sucks at creating presets? Probably not! Odds are that with a few tweaks, you can make those presets work for you, too.

A big misconception I had in the beginning of my photography journey was thinking if I purchased my favorite travel influencer’s presets, my own photos would look exactly like hers. That’s not really how photo editing works.

There are a myriad of factors that play into the final result of a photo: The time of the day the photo was taken, the camera that was used and the colors of the scene. Most creators use Lightroom travel presets — including their own — as a base for their editing process. From there they go on to make specific tweaks to lighting and colors depending on each photo.

Tips For Using Lightroom Presets On Your Travel Photography

Wondering how to make your new travel presets work for you? Here are a few of my editing secrets to ensure you achieve the wonderful results you’re looking for — coming from someone who has purchased dozens of preset collections from well-known creators over the past three years.

Purchase travel presets from creators whose photos you love

One of the best ways to find your own editing style is to follow travel photographers and creators with an aesthetic you admire. Follow accounts that inspire you, and learn from them. Many creators offer helpful photography tips as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how they create their photos.

If you enjoy their aesthetic, odds are you’ll love their presets, too. It’s a magical thing to be able to find an artist whose work you admire — only to be given an exact editing roadmap that shows how they achieve that work!

Ask what camera they shoot with

If you’re unsure about how a creator’s presets would look on your travel photos, you can ask them what camera they shoot with. ( Many travel bloggers usually have a blog post about the camera gear they use .)

If you shoot with the same camera, then you can expect your photos to look fairly similar to theirs once presets are applied. If you shoot with a different camera and you’re looking to upgrade, this may give you a good idea of what to purchase next.

Yet even if you both use totally different camera models, you can still achieve incredible results with just a few slight tweaks.

Common T weaks To Make Presets Compatible With Your Photos

Skin tone: The number one tweak I’ve always made after applying presets I purchased from someone else was skin tone. Sometimes my skin tone would appear too orange, too dark or too light. It’s really easy to color-correct skin tone by adjusting the hue, saturation and luminance of the oranges and reds.

Exposure: If your photo is too dark after applying a preset, you should adjust the exposure, shadows and blacks. If it’s too bright, try bringing down the exposure, the highlights and whites.

Temperature: If your photo looks too “yellow” or “blue,” play around with the temperature setting. Moving the lever to the left creates a cooler image while moving it to the right brings in more warmth.

Colors: Does the sky look too saturated or blown out? Play around with the blues in the photo. To fix a blown out sky, lower the blue’s luminance. If the sky is unnaturally blue, lower the saturation. Do you want the sky to appear more turquoise? You can do so by changing the blue’s hue.

If you’ve ever spent any time editing your travel photos you’ll know exactly how time consuming it can be.  I’m sure you might have wondered if there was an easier and quicker way to get your photos looking amazing. That’s where free Lightroom mobile presets come in!

Lightroom presets are an extremely powerful tool that can be used in Adobe’s photo editing program, Lightroom.  If you’ve never heard of Lightroom presets before don’t worry, I will explain all about them next. 

I will explain what they are exactly and how to install and use them in Lightroom mobile. After that, I will share my selection of the best free Lightroom mobile presets that you can download for yourself.

What Are Lightroom Presets?

So what exactly are Lightroom presets or, more specifically, what are Lightroom mobile presets?  

A preset is a function in Lightroom and the Lightroom mobile app that allows you to apply a group of adjustments to your photos with just one click of a button.  

These adjustments can affect and change certain aspects such as the exposure, tone and colour of your photos. You can think of them as pre-made edits waiting to be applied to your travel imagery.

Presets can offer a lot of benefits for you when editing your images, for instance it can massively speed up your workflow.  

With mobile presets you can achieve beautifully edited images in no time whatsoever.  As well as this, presets can help you to create consistency in your travel photos. This can be really helpful, especially if you’re wanting to post your images online on sites like Instagram.

A lot of photographers and Instagram influencers nowadays offer their Lightroom presets as products you can buy online.  They do this so that you can achieve beautiful edited photos just like theirs, but quite often these presets can be a bit pricey.  

Luckily though there are lots of free alternatives out there for you to download. But before I get to that, I’ll show you how to actually install and use them on your mobile…

How To Install And Use Mobile Presets

It’s an extremely easy process to install and use presets on your mobile device. 

First of all you need to get the DNG files downloaded to your phone or tablet.  You can either download the preset files using a computer and then send them to your mobile device or you can download the files straight to your phone or tablet.  

If you are downloading straight to your device you will need a way to unzip the files.  I use Unzip which is a free app found in the app store. 

After you have unzipped the DNG files on your mobile device, open up the Lightroom app and create a new album to import your presets into.

You now want to add your DNG file into the new album.  Press Add Photos in the bottom right corner and find where your DNG file is saved, you can then import it into Lightroom mobile.

Now the DNG files have been imported you need to create the actual preset in Lightroom, this is very easy.  Click on the preset you have in your new album to open it.  

In the top right corner you should see three dots, click on them.  This will open a drop down menu, click on Create Preset.

A dialog box will pop up, in here you can choose a name for your preset, select a preset group and the edits that are included in the preset.  

For the Preset Group I would keep it as User Presets and I would keep all the tick boxes selected except for Tools, Optics and Geometry . Then you can click on the tick in the top right corner to save the preset.

Your preset is now ready to be used on any photo you want.  

Simply find a photo to edit, click the two overlapping circles on the right hand side tool panel and find the preset that you saved.  Click on the preset and then select Done. Congrats!  You’ve now mastered how to install and use presets in the Lightroom mobile app.

The Best Free Lightroom Mobile Presets For Your Travel Photography

Below you will find some of the best free Lightroom mobile presets that you can use to make your travel images really come to life.  

With each preset you will see a comparison of a before image, and one after the preset has been applied.  This will give you a good idea of how these presets can help elevate your own photos.

1. Insta Blogger

The Insta Blogger preset is available for a free download from creativetacos.com. You can find lots of freebies on their site including presets, Photoshop actions and Photoshop brushes.  

The Insta Blogger preset helps you create a bright and airy feel in your travel photos. As well as the bright feel created in your images, you’ll notice a lot of changes to the colours and tone of your photos.  

With the use of split toning and the hue, saturation and luminance sliders you can really give your travel photos that dreamy Instagram feel.

Miami is one of my favourite free Lightroom mobile presets, you can find it on creativetacos.com.  

This is a great preset to use if you’re looking for a faded de-saturated look in your travel imagery.  You’ll notice from the example that although the landscape and sky look very de-saturated, the person’s skin tone doesn’t look faded.  

This is because a lot of the adjustments are only affecting the greens and yellows in the image. This means that if you have any people in your photos their skin doesn’t come out looking too weird.

If you’re looking to make your travel photos a lot more interesting, you can do this by introducing a bit of contrast and tone to your images.  This can be done perfectly with Signal, a preset that is available to download from The Photographers Passport.

Signal adds adjustments to your images that help even out the exposure and adjusts certain colours to help achieve images that really stand out.  

If your images have yellows, greens and blues in them then this preset will work very well for you.  You can find the download for this preset by following this link.

Maldives is a preset created by creativetacos.com, you’ll notice a few of their presets on this list as they have such a great selection.  

As you can probably tell from the name, this preset works perfectly on the sort of photos you’re likely to take in the Maldives, I’m thinking lots of beach photos! 

It can work really well on all of your travel imagery though, as you can see in the example.

Many adjustments have been made in this preset, including many aspects such as the exposure and white balance.  The biggest changes you’ll find with this preset involve the colours in the image. 

Almost all the colours on the Hue, Saturation and Luminance slider have been de-saturated and with the use of split toning, blue has been added into the shadows of the image, giving it a cold feel.  If you like what you see with this preset you can download it using the following link.

Sunset Dreams free lightroom mobile preset

If you’re not looking to adjust your images too drastically but still would like to add a few finishing touches, then Sunset Dreams from Danny Grainger could be the preset for you. 

This preset works perfectly for many types of travel imagery but particularly for sunsets (hence the name)!.

With Sunset Dreams you can expect to see adjustments to the exposure, particularly with the shadows and blacks in your photos.  

You’ll notice also, adjustments to many of the colours in your photos, especially to the blues, yellows and greens.  You can download this preset for free by following this link.

Adventure has been created specifically to be used with all your adventure and travel images.  With Adventure you can create a unique and interesting edit on your photos in a matter of seconds.  

If you are looking for a slightly faded or de-saturated feel in your travel photos then this preset could be what you’re looking for.  You can get a free download of this preset by following this link.

The final preset on this list is from freepresets.com which has a vast selection of both mobile and desktop presets.  This preset is another one that creates a subtle edit to your travel photos. 

With the use of the tone curve you get a faded feel in the darker areas of your photos, you’ll notice this particularly in the blacks.  As well as this you’ll notice a warm orange tone added to the shadows of your photos, this is thanks to the use of split toning.

Final Thoughts On Free Lightroom Mobile Presets

Free Lightroom mobile presets can be an extremely useful tool for your travel photography. 

As well as speeding up the process of editing, it can also help you to achieve better results with your travel photography.  This is particularly true when taking photos in difficult weather conditions , as it can help you quickly and easily keep a consistent tone in your images (whether it’s bright or dark).

One thing I will say though is that these presets are not likely to work with every single photo.  Some presets will work better with some photos than others.  Try to keep this in mind and don’t be afraid to make your own adjustments as well.  

These presets work extremely well at speeding up the process of editing and correcting any errors in your photography . With a bit of fine-tuning, you can create some breathtaking travel photography with them.

2. locate someone with a real camera.

As a blanket statement, anyone who has their digital or DSLR camera while traveling, means business. Someone who’s into photography enough to have their camera with them likely understands proper photo composition, lighting, the best poses, flattering angels, etc., and can take a great photo for you.

Since we can all take great cell phone and iPhone photos nowadays, the commitment to packing a DSLR camera with these fancy Sony lenses with traveling — and then actually carrying it around all day — screams this person LOVES travel photography!

It also likely means they are a traveler just like you, and totally get that you want to capture some memories. In short, they are the ideal stranger to approach for a photo favor.

When in Doubt: Ask A Second Person

Can we talk honestly for a second?! …some people just don’t care about taking good photos . That’s right — Not everyone cares about taking beautiful, Instagram worthy travel pictures. Some people downright suck at taking them. There, I said it… and so did  Bored Panda .

If you ask someone, and they took a photo worthy of being a meme with your head cut off or their finger in the photo, don’t be afraid to “get a second opinion.” Since some places are too amazing to not have awesome travel photos of, gather up the courage and ask another person for a photo.

As was mentioned in Tip #2, always look for someone with a digital camera or DSLR camera. If you can’t find one, be on the lookout for females, ages 20-25, who are taking a selfie and seem to be in a friendly mood. ( Disclaimer: This is just a guide, ask anyone you feel comfortable with asking .)

Bonus Tip: Return the Photo Favor

Photo reciprocity is good karma!

Always offer to take a photo for whoever you asked to do so for you, even if this person isn’t a solo traveler.

With any sized group, someone always has to be the photographer, so this will give them the opportunity for a nice group/couple shot.

3. Know Your Ideal Shot

When you’re shopping for a sweater, you don’t actually want any sweater — You want a Kelly green cashmere cardigan in size medium, please. The same is true when we’re talking about great travel photos, you have to know exactly what you want in order to beautifully capture it.

This goes for when you’re both using your octopus tripod , or asking a kind stranger with a fancy DSLR to take a photo for you. You have to know what shot you’re after to get it, take a moment to think this through before setting up your tripod or asking someone to take a photo for you.

When asking a stranger, here’s what it boils down to: When you ask for “a photo,” you will get “a photo,” which means any photo. When you know exactly what you want, you’re much more likely to get just that.

You’ll of course want to keep requests within reason, but if you ask: “Can you please take a vertical photo of me and get as much as you can of the pyramids in the background as possible?” you’ll likely get that.

Since this person is doing you a favor, you’ll want to give them the phone completely ready to take the photo, so all they have to do is click! Again, keeping requested with reason, if you think it’s appropriate, suggest they take several photos in  Burst   mode, or “rapid fire shooting.”

With Burst Mode , you press and hold down the button to take the photo; your phone will keep taking pictures until you release your finger. This way, you’ll get about 25 photos in one second, and can choose the best travel photos from the bunch.

4. Rule of Thirds & Using Grid Lines

Rule of thirds is one of the first things you’d learn in a photography class.

Basically, pretend your phone screen is a tic-tac-toe grid; you want the subject of the photo at the intersecting points of those lines, rather than in the dead center of your photo.

Nowadays, all phone cameras have grid lines you can turn on in the settings. If they are distracting, know that after a while most people can eyeball the thirds and won’t need the grid, but it certainly does take the guesswork out of things when you’re just starting out with using them.

Try to follow this rule when setting up your shot, but if not, you can always crop the photo afterwards so it conforms to the rule.

5. Timing + Lighting = The Best Travel Photos

Arrive as early as possible.

When traveling, there are a few iconic shots you’ll want to take in certain cities or countries, like the Taj Mahal or Eiffel Tower. Since these places are so iconic, you’re not the only one who’s wanting travel photos there. So how do you take good travel photos in these places? Arrive early!

While arriving early isn’t always possible, in times you can’t, you can still get creative. This will also require a bit of patience, but frame your shot and get your octopus tripod set up, so you’re 100% ready for those magical few seconds when no one’s in the frame but you — and then take your photo.

Understand Photo Lighting

While photo editing can do a lot, there’s not much you can do if the lighting is really bad. While there’s sometimes nothing you can do, try to avoid photos during midday when the sun is directly overhead, as it will cast harsh shadows all over the place. Here are the best times to take your travel photos.

• Magic Hour: Also called golden hour, this is known as the best time to take photos because the natural light from the sun is soft and golden in color, and makes everything and everyone look beautiful. Magic hour takes place during the one hour before sunset, and the one hour after sunrise.
• Blue Hour: A lesser utilized photography time, blue hour, or twilight hour, will give you dramatic blue-colored lighting in your photos. Blue hour takes place one hour after sunset, and one hour after sunrise.

Well, strangers let you know if it’s OK (or not) to talk to them by their body language and overall vibe.

I have met people all along this solo travel journey by only approaching those people who seemed inviting — the ones giving off “Talk to me!” vibes.

6. Presets & Photo Editing

Since the dawn of photography time, humans have edited photos. Back in the day, this was done while processing photos in the darkroom — and Yes, I just completely dated myself 🤣

Darkroom editing was a bit complicated and tedious, which is why we’re so lucky to have the technology we do not. These days, thanks to photography editing presets you can edit photos in the light and from the comfort of our couch.

I have tried a few camera and editing apps, and I stick to Adobe Lightroom for both. Personally, I like Lightroom for the editing presets so I can do one-click edits, and also because the Adobe Lightroom camera offers more functionality than my native iPhone camera. In short, Lightroom helps me get the closest-to-professional photos I can possibly get.

What is a Preset?

Basically, it’s a group of settings, including the brightness, contrast, color vibrancy, etc. that you can copy and paste from one photo to the next.

Even noticed how some IG accounts have a consistent look to all their photos? That’s thanks to the Magic Sauce known as photo editing presets.

A preset is essentially a pre-set and pre-determined look and feel you can apply to all your photos with the tap of a phone screen.

For presets called “cool,” you can imagine softer lighting, with pastel tones to the colors; whereas a preset called “bright” will have vibrant, bright colors and lots of bright white light.

Especially those who love pink will love this photo spot! The lights look magical. If you want to take the perfect photo here, I'd recommend wearing a dramatic pink dress!

3. St. Basil’s Cathedral

The St. Basil's Cathedral is also a very photogenic place in Moscow!

What I love most about this photo spot, is the amazing architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral is so colorful! It will definitely add a lot of color to your feed.

You can take many kinds of photos here. For example, you can sit down. But you can also walk towards the building.

Seeing this cathedral is also one of the best free things to do in Moscow .

4. State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is a museum where you can learn about the history of Russia.

You can find it between Red Square and Manege Square. I love the architecture of the building. Furthermore, it's amazing how colorful the building is!

It's a very Instagrammable place because you can make some amazing photos in front of the building.

There are many restaurants in Moscow , but this one is most photogenic.

White Rabbit Restaurant & Bar is another great place to take photos in Moscow. The large windows are wonderful. And from here, you have an amazing view of Moscow.

Furthermore, this is also a great place to relax for a while and have some drinks!
