Live A26 traffic updates today as road closed in East Sussex after crash between Beddingham and Newhaven

Diversion routes are in place as the road remains shut in both directions

A major East Sussex road is closed in both directions after a crash today (Sunday, May 8). The A26 new road is shut to traffic between Beddingham and Newhaven.

The closure has been in place since around 6.30pm. Traffic is being diverted via local routes.

Inrix, the traffic data company, said: "A26 New Road in both directions closed, slow traffic due to accident investigation work from A27 (Beddingham Roundabout, Beddingham) to B2109 (South Heighton). The closure is expected to remain in place for some time following a serious accident involving a car towing a caravan and a motorcycle. Affecting traffic between Newhaven and the A27."

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The A26 in East Sussex is closed in both directions between the A27 (Beddingham) and the A259 (Newhaven) due to a serious collision. Emergency Services including Sussex Police are on scene. Traffic is being diverted via local routes. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

No delays - road reopen

According to the Inrix traffic and travel database at 5:06am:

A26 - BEDDINGHAM - BOTH DIRECTIONS - EAST SUSSEX A26 in both directions re-opened, earlier accident investigation work between A27 ( Beddingham Roundabout, Beddingham ) and B2109 ( South Heighton , Newhaven). After a car towing a caravan collided with a motorbike around 18:30 yesterday evening.

Traffic is coping well. The closure is expected to remain in place for some time following a serious accident involving a motorbike and a car towing a caravan which happened at around 18:30. Affecting traffic between Newhaven and the A27.

Motorbike involved in crash.

A motorbike and a car towing a caravan are understood to have been involved in the crash on the A26.

It is unknown whether anybody has been injured in the crash. However, the crash has been described as 'serious'.

Latest news from east sussex county council, flexier flexibus.

Passengers can book Flexibus trips to any destination within a 14-mile radius of their pick-up point within the new zone, which covers 90 per cent of the county as well as some key destinations beyond the border such as transport hubs and hospitals.

Passengers can request a pick-up or drop off at any location within the zone, as long as it is safe to do so.

As the service has been developed to serve the most rural parts of the county, there are some areas where Flexibus is not available, such as coastal towns like Eastbourne and Hastings, that already have good bus coverage.

Karl Taylor, head of operations at East Sussex County Council, said: “As with any new service, we have kept Flexibus under constant review to ensure it is working as effectively as possible and offering the greatest benefit to residents.

“As part of this, we have removed the seven individual zones and passengers can now travel 14 miles in any direction from their pick-up point within the Flexibus boundary.”

Residents can visit https://flexibus.sussex.podaris.com to see where they can and can’t travel.

As Flexibus is designed to complement the bus network in East Sussex, passengers are not able to book a Flexibus journey to travel along an existing public transport route.

Where there is an existing bus or train service available, the app or booking centre will be able to give details of the services passengers can use instead.

Mr Taylor continued: “Flexibus has proven to be hugely successful in connecting communities across East Sussex and since it was introduced last spring, the service has made over 28,000 journeys possible.

“I hope the changes we have made will make using the service even easier for passengers, and encourage more residents to use Flexibus to travel around the county.”

Flexibus journeys can be booked up to a week in advance on the Ride Pingo app, which can be downloaded using a QR code, or by calling 01273 078203 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday).
