Daily Mail ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 'An emotional evening, packed with heart-wrenching piano ballads and joyous rock 'n' roll songs from one of pop's greatest back catalogues... he remains an indefatigable frontman' Daily Telegraph ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 'Elton John is bowing out still at the height of his powers, perhaps the greatest showman of our times.' The Times ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ '(Elton) is going out with the show of his life'

Elton John coming to Aberdeen - everything you need to know before the Rocket Man touches down

His long-awaited trip to the north-east has already been delayed twice- first due to the coronavirus pandemic and secondly for Sir Elton to receive a hip operation

  • 14:18, 10 JUN 2023

Elton John is currently on his farewell tour

Pop superstar Elton John is set to play in Aberdeen for the final time as part of his farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

The Rocket Man will take his final steps along the road with dates planned next Tuesday and Thursday (June 13 and 15) at Aberdeen's P&J Live arena.

Music royalty Sir Elton, 76, has topped charts across the world in a decades long career- with the likes of Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Can You Feel the Love Tonight among his countless hits.

His trip to the north-east has already been delayed twice- first due to the coronavirus pandemic and secondly for Sir Elton to receive a hip operation.

Here is everything you need to know before the big dates.

When did Elton first play Aberdeen?

It will be hard for many to believe but the superstar first played to a compact crowd of just 1,200 at the Music Hall in 1972, with tickets costing just 50p each.

Since then he has played to much larger crowds at Pittodrie and the only AECC in Bridge of Don.

The dates at the P&J Live will be his final in the Granite City with Sir Elton planning to retire following his three year worldwide tour.

How many fans will be there?

Sir Elton is arguably the biggest name to have played the P&J Live since it was first opened in August, 2019 so the crowds will be big.

The area can hold a capacity of 15,000 so on both nights you can expect sell-outs.

What songs will he play?

Given it is his goodbye tour, fans can expect a walk through all the decades of his classic hits as a fitting send-off.

According to recent setlists, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and I Guess that's why they call it the Blues are early hits played in a set that also features classic album tracks like Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

The show appears to end with I'm Still Standing, Crocodile Rock and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.

We'll leave the encores a surprise!

Where else is he playing?

The worldwide tour has already visited Australia, the USA, Canada and huge areas across Europe in the likes of France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

After Aberdeen, Sir Elton plays the OVO Hydro arena in Glasgow before further dates in Paris, Zurich, Copenhagen and Sweden.

What have the reviews been like?

In a word - good. National newspapers like the Guardian, the Daily Express and the Independent went to London shows and reported a 'majestic display' of a show counting through his many hits.

Stefan Kryiazis of the Daily Express wrote: "The man and megastar also known as Reginald Dwight turned 76 last month and these days he gloriously glides around the stage on a motorised piano – but based on his full-throated voice and those flashing fingers at the piano, he could go for another 76."

Review: Elton John's Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour hits the stage in Aberdeen

elton john tour aberdeen

Brightly-coloured feather boas, colourful jackets and trousers and star-shaped glasses flashed throughout the crowd as a standing ovation welcomed 'Rocket Man' Elton John to the Aberdeen stage, writes Daniel Forsyth .

The veteran music man made his fourth appearance in the Granite City and first at the city's P&J Live Arena on Tuesday, June 14.

The opening standing ovation stayed for Elton, who was joined on stage throughout the evening by his six-piece band as he got the concert underway with his 1974 hit 'Bennie and the Jets.

It didn't take long for Elton to get into the groove with his usual high-standard vocals and piano playing ringing throughout the Aberdeen arena – much to the watching crowd's delight.

Throughout the evening the music and vocals were matched by impressive lighting, visuals and graphics displayed on a large screen behind Elton – ranging from photographs from Martin Parr, close up shots of Elton's fingers floating around his piano and an out-of-this-world experience during Rocket Man.

The Rocket Man himself even had time to give someone in the crowd a thumbs up half-way through his rendition of the song.

As Elton embarks on his final set of concerts – with Aberdeen being his 318th and 319th shows during a 333-gig run on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour – nostalgia was high.

On a few occasions throughout the evening, photographs and video clips from his career would run on the large display alongside songs.

Moments ranging from Live Aid, eye-catching outfits and visits to his beloved Watford Football Club were mixed with clips from TV appearances from shows such as The Simpsons and The Muppet Show.

The set list included most of Elton’s greatest hits, including a poignant rendition of ‘Candle in the Wind’ accompanied by a backdrop of images of Marilyn Monroe, ‘I’m Still Standing’, ‘Rocketman’ and ‘Crocodile Rock’ which Elton dedicated to all of his adoring fans.

There were a couple of less known numbers, such as Take Me to the Pilot, Burn Down the Mission and Levon which allowed the audience to catch their breath and John’s excellent band to show off their musical talent.

But the best was saved until last with the encore, as Elton came back out on stage, clad in a pink dressing gown (of course) to run through the Dua Lipa version of Cold Heart, which he reminded the crowd earned him a number one single all over the world at the age of 74.

He finished with Your Song and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road before waving the rapturous Aberdeen crowd goodbye as he disappeared into the stage, to round off an impressive 2 and a quarter hour set.

Elton John's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' tour sends Aberdeen into raptures

The 'Rocket Man' is saying farewell to his fans in Scotland's oil capital as part of the highest grossing tour in music history – and he paid a special tribute to his Edinburgh-born guitarist, Davey Johnstone

  • 08:22, 14 JUN 2023

How times have changed for Elton John . When he first played Aberdeen 51 years ago, there were 1200 fans and the tickets were just 50p.

On Tuesday night in front of 18,000 adoring and devoted followers, the Rocket Man landed in Scotland's oil capital for the first of his two sell-out shows - helping to add what is already the highest grossing tour in musical history.

Aberdeen has had to be patient after two planned gigs were cancelled two years ago after Elton needed a hip operation. He still moved around the stage a little gingerly at times last night and left after his final encore of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on what seemed a chair lift that disappeared into a star splattered back drop.

Ironically, his first Aberdeen gig was scheduled for 1971, but had to be rescheduled due to illness. But on Tuesday night he showed he has become the complete songsmith, musician and entertainer with a back catalogue that few can match.

There were many highlights, but his extended re-working of Rocket Man, The Bitch is Back and Someone Saved My Life Tonight were just three. There were many more.

With at least three changes of attire and bejewelled trademark glasses, the 76-year-old pounded his way through a 2 hour 20 minute set that many younger would have struggled to sustain.

Elton John performs during the first UK stop on his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" Tour at M&S Bank Arena on March 23, 2023 in Liverpool

Most of his band have been with him a long time. Among them fellow septuagenarian, Edinburgh-born Davey Johnstone. Elton paid a glowing tribute to the guitarist, recounting that he spotted him in Scottish folk band Magna Carta and persuading him to take up playing the electric guitar.

Watching his solos on Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting and Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding showed why he is such a masterful exponent of finding the right lick at the right time.

Behind his exuberant showbiz exterior you sense Elton is a more shy and reflective character and his tender sensitive renditions of Tiny Dancer, Your Song and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me were given the full emotional treatment - his voice remarkably good after so many gigs.

Elton John is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, with 37 gold and 27 multi-platinum albums as well as 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, and he’s sold more than 250 million records worldwide.

Sequined suits, bedazzled baseball outfits and oversized glitterised glasses may no longer be seen after his Farewell Yellow Brick Road last ever tour.

Edinburgh's Davey Johnstone plays guitar as Elton John performs at Mission Estate on February 06, 2020 in Napier, New Zealand

He has now been touring the show on and off around the world since 2018. It’s officially the highest-grossing tour of all time and it’s a fitting goodbye to fans who have lived, breathed and grown up with Elton’s music for the last 50 years.

Starting the show with the roaring Bennie and the Jets, Elton rolled out the hits and even glided across the stage in a motorised piano a couple of times in the more surreal moments of the epic concert.

There were no dancers or backing singers on stage either and lesser-known songs, like Burn Down The Mission, reminded fans just what an extensive catalogue Elton has amassed over more than 50 years.

I’m Still Standing and the number one hit Cold Heart turned the P and J Live Arena practically turning into a massive karaoke dance floor with fans screaming out every word.

After more than 3,500 concerts, Elton is stepping off the Yellow Brick Road. It has been some journey. I'm temped to say Haste Ye Back Rocket Man. You can still cut it big time.

Elton plays Aberdeen again on Thursday and Glasgow at the Ovo Hydro on Saturday and Sunday.

Forthcoming Farewell Yellow Brick Road European and UK Tour Dates Rescheduled

Elton John has today announced that the forthcoming 2021 European and UK tour dates of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour have to be rescheduled for 2023.

Elton said:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am forced to reschedule the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023.

At the end of my summer break I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since. Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving. I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications. I will be undertaking a program of intensive physiotherapy that will ensure a full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain.

I am going to complete the charitable Global Citizen event on 25th September as I don’t want to let a charity down. Being just five songs it’s a very different physical undertaking to the demands of playing for close to three hours every night on tour and travelling overnight between countries. After this I will be having the operation to ensure the tour can get back on the road in January of 2022 in New Orleans.

I know how patient my incredible fans have been since Covid halted touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer. I completely feel your frustrations after the year we’ve had. I promise you this – the shows will return to the road next year and I will make sure they are more than worth the wait.

Important information

Ticketholders of the rescheduled performances will receive new event information and all original tickets will be honoured at the rescheduled performances. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour will recommence on 19th January 2022 in New Orleans and run until the summer of 2023.

Elton John marks '52 years of pure joy' with final tour performance: See photos

elton john tour aberdeen

Elton John closed a musical era Saturday with his final planned tour performance in Stockholm nearly 52 years to the day the 76-year-old first performed there, he told the crowd , calling that period "52 years of pure joy."

The British superstar said the night was "magical."

"I'm trying to process it, and I don't think it will sink in for a while yet that I've finally finished touring," John said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Monday. "I can't tell you how much I'm going to miss the fans and how much their support has humbled me — it will stay with me forever."

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began nearly five years ago in 2018 . His last show Saturday in Sweden happened around two years later than the singer intended it to, thanks to a hip injury that forced him to rearrange his schedule.

"When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn't have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour — and the whole world — would have experienced in the next five years," John said. "And every step of the way, my fans have been there. They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show."

The "Tiny Dancer" singer bid America farewell in November, with his final U.S. performance at Dodger Stadium — the famed setting for John's 1975 breakout stadium concerts.

John took the stage in a dazzling outfit — one of many the singer has donned over the years that have gone hand in hand with his electrifying performances.

Fans who packed the stadium were able to see John not only on the stage but in a larger-than-live iteration on a massive screen.

In heart-shaped, pink-tinted sunnies, John looked out toward the crowd as he sat at his piano on stage.

The crowd took video with some moments from his performance and later shared them to social media, including his final song and speech of the final show , for which he sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

The stage was adorned with a gold border with "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" embossed across the stage-framing feature. As he sang, some throwback photos and videos splayed across the big screen during his "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" recital.

Sir Elton John’s Aberdeen shows postponed to 2023 as star undergoes surgery

Sir Elton John's tour, including his dates at P&J Live next month, has been put back to 2003.

Sir Elton John’s Aberdeen shows in December have been postponed until 2023 as the music superstar undergoes surgery for hip problems after a fall.

His two nights at P&J Live will now take place on Tuesday June 13 and Thursday June 15 after the entire Farewell Yellow Brick Road UK and European tour was rescheduled.

Sir Elton said: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am forced to reschedule the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023.”

He said he fell awkwardly on a hard surface at the end of his summer break and had been in considerable and worsening pain and discomfort in his hip since, despite intensive physio and specialist treatment.

“I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications,” he said.

Show will be worth the wait says Sir Elton

“I know how patient my incredible fans have been since Covid halted touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer. I completely feel your frustrations after the year we’ve had. I promise you this – the shows will return to the road next year and I will make sure they are more than worth the wait.”

Sir Elton had been due to play P&J Live on December 9 and 10 this year.

Louise Stewart, head of entertainment, exhibitions and marketing said: “Although we know Elton’s loyal fans will be very disappointed to see Elton’s tour dates move, we are sure they will join in wishing him a speedy recovery.

“We know that when he does take the stage in 2023, it will be absolutely worth the wait and his fans will experience a show that will be nothing short of spectacular.”

This is the second time Sir Elton’s farewell gigs for his Aberdeen fans – with 10,000 people expected on both nights – have been rescheduled.

He was originally due to play the venue on November 20 and 21 last year, but the dates were postponed due to the coronavirus to this December 9 and 10.

This will be Sir Elton John’s final tour

Tickets for the 2021 dates will remain valid for the rescheduled shows.

Sir Elton’s worldwide tour consists of more than 300 shows across five continents, hitting North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia.

The stage production will take his fans on a musical and highly visual journey spanning a 50-year career of hits. It is to be his final tour.

Sir Elton last played in Aberdeen in 2015 at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre’s specially built outdoor arena, where he delighted fans by playing Scotland The Brave.

He also performed a string of familiar classics for the 14,000-strong crowd including I’m Still Standing, Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting), Rocket Man, I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues and Your Song.

In 1972, he played in Aberdeen for the first time, at the Music Hall. He has been back since then, but the gig in 2015 was his first in the Granite City since 26,000 fans packed Pittodrie Stadium in 2004.
