The 31 Best Airbnb Online Experiences [Ultimate Guide]

What Are Airbnb Online Experiences?

Hosting a private group activity, how are airbnb online experiences priced, how to book airbnb online experiences, communicate limitations, changing your experience, refunds for your experience, cooking online experiences, coffee, wine, and cocktail online experiences, virtual tours, diy online experiences, active online experiences, creative online experiences, quirky online experiences, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

While Airbnb has been offering in-person Experiences, it recently expanded these Experiences to make many of them virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For times when travel isn’t an option and we are desperately craving some cultural immersion, Airbnb Online Experiences are a great fit! They include a mix of hosted classes, cooking demonstrations, tours, and more.

We’ve taken a look at all of the offerings and gathered together our favorites to help you sort through the steadily-increasing variety of activities. From learning to cook traditional Spanish paella to getting a personalized tour of Paris with a local, these are some of the best ways you can travel from home with Airbnb Online Experiences.

While Airbnb started as a platform for travelers to find and book rooms and homes around the world, back in 2017, it expanded its offerings to include bookable Experiences across the globe. These Experiences “offer a deep-dive into the local host’s world through their passion.” It notes that the most successful Experiences “offer a unique take on an activity or locale that is special to the host’s city.”

Due to COVID-19, Airbnb moved these Experiences online. The online activities are still local-led, expert-driven experts, but now they take place virtually through Zoom, a third-party cloud platform for video conferencing that you access via your desktop computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Most experiences are group activities, where you’ll be joined by others on Zoom who might be located anywhere around the globe. Or, you can choose to pay a little extra to book a private Experience for just you and some friends and family.

Airbnb Online Experiences are purchased and booked on the same portal where you book accommodations, and a Zoom link to join is provided for the appropriate day and time as soon as your payment is processed.

How to Search for Airbnb Online Experiences

You can use the Airbnb website or mobile app to book an Online Experience. The individual host sets Experience availability — it is not simply available on demand.

  • On the Airbnb home page , click on the “Online Experiences” tab
  • Click “Dates” and enter your date (or if you are flexible, you can do this later)
  • Click “Guests” and enter the number of guests

The other option is to simply browse through all available Experiences.

Airbnb Online Experiences

Make sure to review all requirements specified by the host. Also, be sure to look closely at the “What’s Included” or “What I’ll Provide” sections of the Experience page to see more details about what to expect for each Experience.

Hot Tip: You don’t need to have a home booked on Airbnb in order to book an Experience.

If you’d like to virtually gather a group of friends or family, private groups may be a good option. Whether a host offers private groups is at the host’s discretion.

There are 3 ways to search for a group activity:

  • When you find an Experience you are interested in, you can message the host to inquire if they can host your group privately
  • You can click the “See Dates” button to check if “Book for a private group” is an option for a specific date
  • Simply book all available spots for a specific date/time, if available

You will receive a link to the Zoom meeting that you will need to forward along to all attendees.

Airbnb Online Experiences are priced depending on how involved the activity is and who the local or expert is, but are very reasonable with an average cost of $22. Also, Experiences are priced per person by default, so the price to book a group will be more expensive.

For example, you can learn to make homemade Italian pasta for only $7 per person, or watch as you have a pair of shoes custom-made for you for $74 per person (including shipping). Have a private workout session for $70 per session, or even book a cooking class and make Spanish paella with just your friends and family for $300 for the group.

Generally, you should book a spot for each person joining the Experience, but sometimes a host is open to multiple guests joining per device. If this is the case, this will be noted on their Experience page under “What You’ll Do” or “How to Participate.”

Once you find an Online Experience you are interested in booking, click on the date and time of your choosing. Be sure to note any cancellation policies on this screen as well.

The Airbnb website will guide you through your payment options and help you finalize your booking. Payment options vary by country, but generally, the following options are available:

  • Most major credit cards and prepaid credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover, JCB) as well as many debit cards that can be processed as credit
  • Airbnb gift cards (in the U.S. only)

For more information, see the Airbnb payment page .

Bottom Line: There is no limit to how many Experiences you can book!

How Do I Prepare for Airbnb Online Experiences?

You can check the “How to Participate” and “Guest Requirements” sections of the Experience page to find out what you need to prepare before attending. This information can also be found in your booking confirmation email.

Examples of common requirements include an internet connection and a list of materials, food, or other items to purchase or prepare in advance.

Hot Tip: You can always find the necessary details in your reservation information found on your Airbnb “Trips” page.

If you have a food allergy or special dietary restrictions, be sure to disclose them to your hosts beforehand so you can discuss if or how their menu can be altered for you.

Along the same lines, if you have any physical limitations that might impact your Experience, communicate this in advance so that accommodations can be made.

If you use a desktop to access Zoom, you can either join from your browser or download the Zoom app . If you’re using a cell phone, you’ll need to download the Zoom app ( iOS , Android ).

Bottom Line: You don’t need to sign up for a Zoom account to attend your Online Experience.

Make sure you have the correct link for your online Experience. This will have been emailed to you when you booked.

Video Credit: Airbnb

If the link isn’t working, close Zoom and try the link again. If it’s still not working, message your host to confirm whether they are having issues with Zoom. In addition, if Zoom is asking you for a password, message your host through Airbnb to ask for the password.

How Do I Change or Cancel Airbnb Online Experiences?

Plans change, but the good news is that Airbnb Online Experiences are pretty flexible!

To change or cancel a reservation, go to “Trips” in your Airbnb account or from your reservation confirmation email. Once you locate your trip, how you change or cancel depends on your method:

  • In the Airbnb app, tap “Manage reservation”
  • From your confirmation email, select “Change or cancel reservation”
  • In your Airbnb account, select “Modify reservation”

You can make a change to your Airbnb Online Experience up to 72 hours before it begins.

To request a request:

  • Click the “Contact host” button on the host’s Experience page
  • Choose between asking a question or requesting availability for dates and times
  • Choose the new date, time, and number of guests
  • Review your request
  • Click “Send request”

The host can review the reservation details and accept or deny your request. If they confirm, you’ll be prompted to complete the booking through a message in your inbox. You may be prompted to pay any difference in pricing, if applicable.

If your request is denied, you can work with the host to find a different time that works better for their schedule.

Canceling Your Experience

You can cancel up to 7 days before the start time or within 24 hours of booking.

You should receive your full refund within 10 days.

In addition, per Airbnb , “guests are eligible for a full refund for your Airbnb Online Experience if there are any technical difficulties, such as audio or video issues, that occur either due to their own device or the host’s device during an online experience.”

For the full refund policy, be sure to check Airbnb’s website .

Airbnb Online Experiences offer the opportunity to not only learn new skills but also connect with hosts and participants around the world. With the average Experience coming in around $22, they offer a good value, even though some classes (like cooking or art classes) will require additional costs for materials or ingredients.

This is also a great way to support hosts whose “regular” jobs in the tourism industry might have taken a hit during the pandemic. While these Airbnb Online Experiences started as a result of COVID-19, we hope we’ll see these continue long after travel returns to normal.

10 once-in-a-lifetime experiences you can book on Airbnb in the US

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

  • In addition to homes, Airbnb offers immersive bookable experiences to get to know your destination.
  • Experiences are  online or in-person; for the latter, try everything from crafts to cliff camping.
  • We found the coolest, most unique Airbnb experiences in the US to try on your next trip.

Insider Today

When planning what to do on vacation, there are always sightseeing and tasting tours, but for a more memorable time, consider Airbnb Experiences.

In the same way that Airbnb is a platform to book accommodations, Airbnb Experiences lets hosts offer their services to take you places you would never think of, like an abandoned missile silo, or do once-in-a-lifetime things like a hike with goats in the Mojave Desert.

Airbnb Experiences are offered in-person and online, the latter of which we tried and enjoyed during the height of the pandemic. How does Airbnb Experience work?

Airbnb experiences are listed on the platform just like regular listings and can be booked in the same manner.

On the Experience page, you'll search by interest and be able to see details from the host on what to expect, as well as the price, available dates, time slots, and group sizes. The experience will be linked to the host's profile where you can see all their reviews and average star rating, too.

Are Airbnb Experiences safe?

Airbnb's health and safety guidelines recommend following local health and safety measures and has instituted required safety guidelines for all experiences hosted on the platform. When required by local laws, all hosts and guests must agree to wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

Hosts must also limit their participants to a maximum of 10 people and follow Airbnb's cleaning guidelines for any equipment or areas guests may come in contact with. They have also recommended adapting experiences to avoid physical contact and give guests opportunities to sanitize throughout the experience.

How do I search for an Airbnb Experience?

Starting from the home page, select "Experiences" above the main search bar and enter your location and desired dates. This will bring you to a page showing a variety of experiences in the area and you can filter by price, language, and themes like "art and culture" or "food and drink." There is also a map feature so you can compare experiences by location.

How do I book an Airbnb Experience?

After selecting your date and entering in the number of guests, you'll be brought to a payment page linked to your Airbnb account. On this page, you can review the guest requirements to make sure everyone in your group will be able to participate.

Do you tip on an Airbnb Experience?

Airbnb does not have a tipping policy but instead encourages guests to consider the cultural preferences of their location. There is no tipping feature on Airbnb Experiences, so any tips you give will need to be in cash.

What is an Airbnb Experience ambassador?

An Airbnb Ambassador is someone who recruits new hosts to offer their homes and experiences on the platform, earning cash rewards for every new host they sign up. It is different from the Referral Program because there is an approval process and it is designed to more highly reward hosts who consistently make referrals. Ambassadors only get credit if the referred host lists an entire home.

How can I create an Airbnb Experience? Do you need to be a host?

All experiences are reviewed by Airbnb and all you need to get started is an Airbnb profile. You can use the submission page to enter the details of your experience and review Airbnb's quality standards.

Are Airbnb Experiences worth it?

Many Airbnb experiences are comparable to what you'd find on other tour booking sites, so it's best to compare prices across platforms to find the best value. On Airbnb, you are more likely to find a unique experience offered by an independent host which always makes it worth searching on during your research.

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner!

Insider Tip: When planning your 2 days in Moscow itinerary, keep in mind that most museums in Moscow are closed on Mondays, this includes The State Tretyakov Gallery!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

  • Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres.
  • Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

All Russian Exhibition Center

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics.

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

  • Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!
  • Cost: Prices vary largely between USD $2.00 –  USD $228.00 based on seat location.
  • Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Bolshoi Theater

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station.

  • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Airbnb Experiences: What Tour Operators Need to Know Before Listing Their Tours

Are you a tour operator looking for new ways to reach customers and increase your business? If so, Airbnb Experiences may be what you’re looking for.

Airbnb Experiences offers an easy-to-use platform for tour operators to list their services and connect with travelers from all over the world.

But before taking the plunge into joining this growing market, tour operators must understand what they are getting into and what is expected of them.

In this blog post, we will discuss what Airbnb Experiences is. We will also discuss how it works, and what terms and conditions tour operators should consider before listing their tours on the platform.

By understanding these basics of Airbnb Experiences, tour operators can make an informed decision on whether or not this OTA fits their business .

What is Airbnb Experiences?

Airbnb Experiences is an online marketplace for tours - or experiences as Airbnb calls them. It was created by Airbnb for tour operators to connect with local and foreign travelers.

With it, tour companies can create unique Airbnb online experiences and in-person experiences and connect travelers with local hosts around the world.

excursions airbnb

Tours may range from a virtual escape room or a cooking class on local cuisine and a food tour with a local chef. Anyone can host an experience in their own whole new way.

Read more: How to Start a Food Tour Business

It began with

Airbnb started as a home-rental platform in 2008. Since 2019, the platform has sold over $38 billion in home rentals and accommodations in over 200 countries.

Recently, it expanded to activities and experiences in 2016- allowing travelers to get a truly unique local experience when they visit a new city.

The Airbnb Experience Culture: The Antidote to Mass Tourism

The Airbnb platform promotes tours that make travelers "live like a local" and "belong anywhere".

The platform is unlike any other OTA. It calls itself an "antidote to mass tourism". Airbnb Experiences focuses on providing experiences that are more exclusive, intimate, and immersive.

typical-guided-tour-airbnb-experience

Why tour operators should be interested in Airbnb Experiences

Tour operators looking for new ways to reach customers and increase their business should consider joining Airbnb Experiences.

Here are several reasons why.

#1 It is growing:

With currently over 40,000 experiences listed, Airbnb Experiences is still small compared to other leading OTA players.

excursions airbnb

Yet, its largest public offering last 2020 promises to be bigger in the coming years!

See the full report by the NY Times here.

Airbnb Experiences is already one of the most popular travel experiences platforms. So tour operators are sure to find a very large audience for their services!

With Airbnb's increasing popularity and market share, your tour business will enjoy the potential for even more growth in its customer base.

#2 Wide customer base:

Since its launch in 2019, the platform has served more than 800 million guests worldwide.

In the same report, it says it has over 150 million users around the globe.

As a side note, these reports have not been updated since 2019. So we can expect these numbers to be bigger since then.

A 2019 Airbnb report states that "6 guests check into an Airbnb listing every single second"

Although the majority of their bookings are for home rentals and accommodations, the Experiences sector is growing too! Not to mention that there is not a single particular market for it. May it be experiencing a new culture and meeting new people- Airbnb has it all.

excursions airbnb

This provides tour operators with a wide range of potential customers that they may not have been able to reach otherwise.

#3 Strong brand presence:

Airbnb is one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Its logo and name evoke a feeling of trust, safety, and adventure for travelers looking for unique experiences.

According to Arival's guide to Airbnb Experiences in 2021, 90% of the site's traffic is not sourced from search engines or advertising.

This means 9 out of 10 Airbnb visitors access the service directly - through the app or the website itself.

By joining Airbnb Experiences, tour operators can leverage this strong brand presence to give potential customers confidence that their tour will be memorable, safe, and unforgettable.

excursions airbnb

What tour operators should know before joining Airbnb Experiences?

Before joining Airbnb Experiences, tour operators should be aware of what the platform offers and what its terms are.

Like most OTAs, Airbnb Experiences has its own set of standards, commission fees, and policies.

Here's what you should know.

Airbnb Quality Standards

Unlike any typical tour, Airbnb offers an alternative to mainstream travel. Instead, it focuses on hospitality and connections, expertise, and authenticity.

Rather than simply offering tours, Airbnb Experiences aims to provide travelers with access to a truly immersive travel experience. This allows them to gain insider access to a particular expertise or a sense of local life.

Unique. Authentic. Local.

These are the kind of vibes Airbnb is looking for in a tour. If this sounds like your tour, then it is a sign that you should start considering Airbnb Experiences.

excursions airbnb

You can check out Airbnb Experiences' standards and requirements for their Experience Hosts here.

"Three Pillars of a Quality Experience"

#1 connection.

Airbnb focuses on connecting with locals (or hospitality).

To build a meaningful connection between the host and the traveler, the host must create a sense of belonging. This is done through hospitality and intimate experiences.

excursions airbnb

By making the traveler feel like a part of a community, and by introducing them to local culture, cuisine, and people, the host can create an authentic and meaningful Airbnb experience for the traveler. This will create a lasting connection between the host and the traveler.

#2 Expertise

Airbnb also looks for hosts who have expertise in what they are offering. They want tours that provide a genuine insight into what the local experience is like.

For example, a tour of the city's finest street food with a local chef would be an ideal Airbnb experience for a guest looking to explore local cuisine.

excursions airbnb

This type of an Airbnb experience allows the guest to not only sample a variety of delicious dishes but also learn about the history and culture of the area from an experienced local.

Plus, it allows the guest to connect with the local community, which can add to the overall travel experience.

#3 Insider Access

Airbnb also looks for hosts who can provide exclusive access to what the region has to offer.

This could include private events, venues that are only open to locals, or anything else that will make the Airbnb experience a truly unique one.

excursions airbnb

For example, in Japan, Airbnb hosts can offer exclusive access to a variety of unique experiences. These experiences may include a traditional tea ceremony or a private tour of a renowned sake brewery.

A blog post from Airbnb explains these three pillars of a quality experience in detail.

Commission fee

Airbnb Experiences charges a 20% commission (service fee) on each booking. This service fee is taken from the total cost of the Airbnb experience, and it is not refundable.

The 20% commission fee is a big win compared to most OTAs who charge 25% or higher.

Keep in mind, however, that what you get paid is what the customer pays before taxes and fees.

Taxes and service fees are an extra cost (which varies depending on the city/country). In addition, the platform will automatically withhold service fees from your payout.

Airbnb has been very helpful to their hosts and they can help you strategically structure your pricing so you can better attract guests to your listing.

Take the time to review these helpful resources from Airbnb itself:

  • Why does Airbnb charge a service fee for experiences?
  • Airbnb service fees for Experiences

Here is a video that can help you factor fees into your total price:

Note: The terms suggested in the video are applicable to Airbnb Homes and Rentals, but they can also benefit Airbnb Experiences hosts.

Exclusivity & Cancellation Terms

Airbnb Experiences is exclusive to the Airbnb platform. Again, the Experiences platform focuses on authenticity and exclusivity.

Thankfully, they're becoming more flexible.

You can still list your tour on Airbnb and offer it on other platforms, including your website, or through a third-party provider. But with a condition.

When you are scheduled to host Airbnb guests for a certain day, then it should be exclusive for Airbnb guests only and not mixed with other large groups (which we will also discuss further in the following subheading).

excursions airbnb

However, operators say the platform is not strictly enforcing this. Thus, the key is clear communication with guests.

There may be guests who are at ease with mixed groups. But there may be others who are not. Whichever the guests prefer, the Experience Host must be willing to commit to the booking. Cancellations may incur penalties, and frequently doing so may qualify your listing for removal.

See the Experience Host cancellation policy and terms here.

Group Minimums & Maximums

Airbnb Experiences caps the number of guests per tour at 10. This ensures that the quality of the Airbnb experience remains high and intimate. Thus, allowing guests to interact and engage with the host and each other.

It also helps to keep the Airbnb experience authentic and intimate.

The group minimum is what you set, but it must be two or more people.

Having a minimum helps you cover fixed costs and ensures a better experience for your customers - as well as yourself.

You should also consider offering discounts for larger groups, as this can help increase conversion rates. For instance, offering a 20% discount for bookings of 10 people or more can help to incentivize customers to book larger groups. This will make the total cost of the booking more attractive.

Listing on other channels

As mentioned, Airbnb is not strictly enforcing its exclusivity terms. You can list your tours on other channels- your travel website or with other OTAs- as long as you keep clear communication with guests' expectations and as long as you do not surpass the maximum of 10 people per Airbnb Experience.

As of now, Airbnb does not directly integrate with reservation systems or a booking software. This means that you will have to manage multiple channels to be able to market the tour more widely.

In addition, you will have to manually update and manage availability across all channels, making sure that the maximum group size of 10 people per tour is not exceeded.

Without this manual monitoring, the Experience Host can overbook and create a situation where two or more bookings are made for the same time slot. This can lead to customer dissatisfaction and a loss of revenue due to cancellations or refunds.

Clear expectations

Above all, make sure guests' expectations are clear.

Guests must know how you are handling their Airbnb experience if you are handling it with other guests.

If they do not agree, the host must be willing to adapt to what the Airbnb guest books for. Airbnb prides itself on exclusivity and uniqueness, and your tours must abide by the same culture.

Every guest is not the same, so transparent communication is the key.

excursions airbnb

How to Start Listing with Airbnb Experiences

Now that you know what to expect when listing your tours on Airbnb Experiences, here are a few tips for getting started.

  • Be sure to read and understand the terms of service.
  • This includes understanding what is expected of hosts and what penalties may be incurred for cancellation or other violations.
  • Create a distinctly different experience.
  • Airbnb encourages hosts to create experiences that are one of a kind. This means offering something different from what is already available on the platform, or what is available from other tour operators.
  • Consider what equipment and supplies you will need for your tours.
  • Be sure to list any necessary supplies in the description of your experience so guests are aware of what they will need to bring.
  • Think about what type of payment system you will use .
  • Airbnb offers its integrated payments service which allows guests to pay for their experience in one easy transaction.
  • Make sure your profile is up to date and complete.
  • A well-crafted profile that accurately describes what guests can expect from your tour will help you attract more customers.

Should you list with Airbnb Experiences?

At the end of the day, what it all boils down to is understanding what Airbnb Experiences can do for you and your tour business.

It offers an opportunity to reach a new audience that may not be aware of your services. In addition, it gives you access to one of the world’s largest travel networks. It also allows you to easily track and manage bookings, as well as receive payments from guests.

However, what it does not offer is a guarantee of success or the ability to exceed your goals.

You need to be diligent when creating tours that align with what Airbnb guests are looking for and what makes them want to book your tour over others.

Ultimately, the decision to list your tours on Airbnb Experiences is totally up to you. It will come down to what fits well with what you’re trying to achieve as a tour operator and what works for you and your business.

Take your time and weigh the pros and cons before making a decision- this way, you can make an informed decision that you can feel confident about.

Key Takeaway

In summary, Airbnb Experiences can be a great way for tour operators to reach wider audiences and tap into the growing trend of experiential travel. With the right preparation and understanding of what is expected of hosts, it can be an easy and rewarding way to expand your business. From creating unique experiences to managing multiple channels, tour operators can benefit greatly from listing their tours on Airbnb Experiences.

New Airbnb Excursions to Focus on Animals

Airbnb Animal Experiences will have an ethical focus; its announcement comes at a time of increased scrutiny of organizations offering animal interactions to tourists.

Airbnb Experiences, the activities arm of the home-sharing platform, offers travelers many things to do in Lima, Peru. They can learn to cycle around the capital on a bamboo bike ($32); make ceviche in the home of a local ($62); and spend 90 minutes with Otto , the skateboarding bulldog who set a world record for the longest human tunnel traveled through by a skateboarding dog (picture a line of participants standing with their legs wide, creating a passageway for the rolling canine).

In the three years since Airbnb introduced its experience bookings, it found some of its most popular involved animals. On Thursday the company is introducing “ Airbnb Animal Experience s ,” an expanded and stand-alone category, much like its existing “Food and Drink” and “Sports and Outdoors” categories. The new animal division will have an ethical focus.

“We realized people want to reconnect with animals,” said Mikel Freemon, the head of animals at Airbnb Experiences. “We wanted to fulfill that urge in a responsible way.”

The announcement comes at a time of increased scrutiny of organizations offering animal and wildlife experiences in tourist destinations; on Wednesday, TripAdvisor announced it would end its practice of selling tickets to events or attractions that breed or buy dolphins, whales and other marine mammals. Indeed, there is growing concern worldwide over the level of regulation of zoos, wildlife parks and other animal refuges, particularly in developing nations, which may potentially attract travelers to situations in which the animals are abused for their entertainment, or worse .

In expanding the division — roughly half of its more than 1,000 Animal Experiences, available in 58 countries, will be new at launch — the company worked with World Animal Protection , a nonprofit organization devoted to animal welfare, to create a policy for the ethical treatment of animals. Animal owners, known as “hosts,” must comply with the policy to be included on the platform.

Airbnb’s policy bans direct contact with wild animals such as petting, feeding or riding them, with some exceptions for nonprofits conducting conservation research (the full policy is here ). Domesticated and farmed animals such as horses and camels may carry no more than one rider and no more than 20 percent of their body weight. The rules prohibit elephant interactions, including riding, bathing or feeding, as well as any experiences involving captive marine mammals.

“Instead of swimming with dolphins in captivity, you can go with a researcher and study wild dolphins,” Ms. Freemon said.

World Animal Protection will not benefit financially from the Animal Experiences bookings, but expressed appreciation for a partner as large and visible as Airbnb, where the experiences it offers across its categories have grown from 500 in 2016, when the division was introduced, to about 40,000 now.

“To have a travel leader such as Airbnb commit to making animal welfare a top priority will not only help educate travelers on the importance of cruelty-free animal tourism but also illustrate to them the opportunities to experience wildlife in their natural habitats while traveling,” wrote Alesia Soltanpanah, the executive director of World Animal Protection, in an email.

Airbnb isn’t the only company to find its animal activities surging in popularity. Five years ago, Intrepid Travel banned elephant rides on its trips globally, including Southeast Asia where they were popular, based on research by World Animal Protection about the abuse of elephants used in tourism. The company reported a record 12 percent growth in its wildlife tours among American travelers in the past year. Their popularity has inspired the company to add 10 new wildlife-focused tours in 2020, including trips to an orangutan rehabilitation center in Borneo and a non-riding elephant sanctuary in Laos.

Offering opportunities to work with rescued monkeys and parrots in Guatemala or rehabilitate kangaroos in Australia, Animal Experience International , based in Ontario, Canada, said its trips have caught on with gap-year travelers and families. The company visits the animal organizations it works with in order to vet them for ethical practices. In November, it will launch a new 10-day Expedition Nepal group trip to volunteer with dog rescue groups during Kuku Tihar, the day Nepali Hindus bless dogs (2,495 Canadian dollars, or about $1,880).

“Knowing that we have actually gone to these places really helps our clients feel confident that they will be helping animals,” said Nora Livingstone, the chief executive of Animal Experience International.

Ethics in animal tourism isn’t, of course, restricted to paid tours. In Scotland last summer, the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, a marine conservation charity, launched the Hebridean Whale Trail , which identifies locations on land where travelers may spot marine mammals from the shore as an alternative to potentially interfering with them on the water.

The expanded Airbnb Animal Experiences range from 90 minutes with Otto, the skateboarding dog, to multiday safaris with conservationists. There are expeditions in Brooklyn to see wild parrots, walks in Britain with mini ponies and tea parties with “naughty” sheep in Scotland known to steal crumpets and nibble on sweaters.

Animal Experiences start at $10 and run $500 or more for more extensive safaris. The average price is around $50.

Many of its new animal experiences involve animal experts such as veterinarians, farmers, naturalists and researchers. In Chernobyl, travelers can participate in a program to meet the feral descendants of the dogs left behind in the 1980s when Ukrainian residents fled following the nuclear reactor explosion. Travelers can help socialize and clean the dogs, said to be safe from contamination, with a group that is working to promote their adoption.

“We want travelers to meet the animals through the eyes of the people who live and work with them,” Ms. Freemon said. “They are translators for these animals so you can get to see and know them through their eyes.”

Airbnb Experiences Update

excursions airbnb

Airbnb’s mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. To advance our mission, we are focused on reimagining travel by building an end-to-end travel platform that combines where you stay, what you do, and how you get there, all in one place. To achieve this goal, we are investing in creating new businesses that will power our growth over the long-term.

Airbnb has an unrivaled global community of hosts and guests: We can connect travelers to more than 6 million places to stay, and there have been more than half a billion guest arrivals in Airbnb listings. More and more of these travelers are choosing to participate in an Airbnb Experience as part of their trip, and increasingly, locals are using Airbnb Experiences to explore the cities in which they live.

Airbnb Experiences immerse travelers in local communities around the world by offering one-of-a-kind activities that are handcrafted and led by local experts. From walking with wolves in LA to listening to live jazz in a repurposed London shipping container, Experiences go beyond typical tours or classes by immersing guests in each host’s unique world.

Today, we are offering a series of updates regarding the growth of Airbnb Experiences, along with background on the different kinds of Experiences that are proving popular with travelers.

Experiences Bookings Increase Nearly 7x

We know travelers are looking for new, unique things to do when they hit the road. In a recent survey conducted for Skift, “69 percent of respondents said they would rather spend more money on better activities than a nicer hotel room (31 percent),” and 65% “want to come back having experienced something new,” versus 35% saying they “want to come back feeling rested and recharged.”

Airbnb Experiences are meeting that demand, offering a new way for people to experience a destination or the city they call home:

  • In 2018, the number of seats booked on Airbnb Experiences increased nearly 7x, year over year.
  • In 2016, Experiences launched with roughly 500 experiences. Today, over 30,000 Experiences are available around the world.
  • While city expansion drove demand, we also grew our attach rate within cities; tripling the number of US guests booking an Experience alongside a home.

Unique and High-Quality

In order to provide the best end-to-end trip, we’ve put a strong emphasis on quality and require all Experiences to meet our high quality standards. This focus on quality is paying off. Today, over 90 percent of all Experiences have 5-star reviews.

Airbnb Experiences are also unique. Unlike tours and activities offered by others, many of Airbnb Experiences are not offered on any other major online platform. In a recent survey of guests who booked an Airbnb experience, 96% of surveyed guests said identifying a more local, authentic experience was a factor when booking with Airbnb, while 92% said their trust in the quality of Airbnb Experiences influenced their decision to book one.

An Economic Opportunity for Hosts

The growth of Experiences also offers new ways for small entrepreneurs to market their time and experiences and talents. In the past, it was difficult for individuals to market and sell independent experiences to travelers. Airbnb has given entrepreneurs access to our global network and while the average person earned $2,500 per Experience listed in 2018, some of our top hosts are earning more than $300,000 in a year from hosting Experiences.

Food, Nature, Art, Animals

In the last two years, we have learned a tremendous amount about the kind of Experiences travelers are looking for, with food and dining, nature, art, and animal-themed experiences such as visiting a Sea Turtle hospital in Miami or Discovering Arctic Foxes , generating significant revenue for hosts.

Understanding the opportunity presented by specialized categories such as these, we are making new investments in these areas. We recently hired new experts who specifically focus on growing the number of Experiences related to Food & Drink and Animals, respectively, while ensuring the Experiences meet our high quality standards.

Social Impact Experiences

Social Impact Experiences empower nonprofits by giving them a platform to fundraise and promote their mission, and by driving Airbnb users to engage in social causes around the globe. Each organization decides what Experience will most help the communities they serve — whether it’s fundraising, building awareness, volunteering, or all of the above — and we waive our fees so that 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to the nonprofit.

With these experiences, Airbnb uses its global footprint and peer review system to support impactful organizations, often in neighborhoods that are not normally on the tourist map, including in underserved urban areas. The opportunity to immerse in a social cause, community, mission and vision of a non-profit can inspire people to act beyond the lifespan of the experience, creating long-term donors, volunteers, and ambassadors to a cause.

Social Impact Experiences are already making a difference. To date, non-profits have raised almost $4 million by hosting a Social Impact Experience and over 65,000 people have connected with a non-profit on an Experience.

Moving Forward

The desire for new, unique experiences represents a tremendous market opportunity. The New York Times recently reported, “Global spending on the so-called experience economy, which is being driven primarily by millennial consumers, is expected to reach $8.2 trillion by 2028, according to the market research firm Euromonitor.”

Airbnb Experiences are well positioned to seize this opportunity while providing an antidote to mass produced tourism, enabling travelers to experience a different and authentic side of a city through local residents. We will be making aggressive investments in Experiences in 2019, making it easier for guests to find the kind of Experience they are looking for while significantly increasing the supply of Experiences available around the world.
