David Lintern tests the Berghaus Expeditor Trek 2.0 as part of his review of three season boots for Spring 2021’s issue of The Great Outdoors

The Expeditor is an uncomplicated and wallet-friendly ‘entry-level’ 3-season boot that’s comfortable straight out of the box. There’s lots of flex in the toe box and plenty of room for the toes on descent. The heel is held firmly in place with a higher ankle cuff and sensible, unobtrusive lacing. Overall it’s built on a longer, narrower last and as such I found the toe overhung a little. This wasn’t a problem at all on easier ground but it started to matter more when off-trail – I snagged the toe a few times on roots and rocks.

The sole unit is reasonably grippy and offers a fair amount of cushioning, plus there’s some lateral support in the midsole, too. The mesh and suede upper provides what synthetic hiking boots cannot – a near- perfect balance between warmth and breathability – which was incredibly comfortable across a range of conditions from warm rain to deep snow. The AQ liner remained intact and my feet stayed dry throughout, no doubt assisted by that natural material in the upper. There is no rand at the front of the boot, which suggests that these are designed mainly with tracks and trails in mind. Overall, there’s nothing that surprises or excels here; but that needn’t be a criticism if the fit works for you. The price is also excellent.

Welcome to the Berghaus Expeditor Trek 2, a boot for all seasons. Sure, we often bang on about picking the right boot for the conditions, but what if you just want one great boot that you can wear year-round? We reckon we’ve found it in the Expeditor Trek 2, which as Berghaus state, is a brilliantly balanced ‘sturdy but light’ boot.

A combination of suede, mesh and a waterproof membrane render this boot both weatherproof and reasonably lightweight at just 415g per boot.

On the trails

During trail testing we found that the Expeditor offered really good grip, even on wet rock, and gave us great confidence when we ventured onto more technical and unstable ground. Cushioned soles also made it comfortable from the get-go, and more importantly it remained comfortable all day long when we wore it on longer rambles.

To be frank, we don’t have very much to criticize this boot for, except that we’d pick the black colorway over the lighter grey, which can stain easily. The rather soft, thin laces also may not last forever, so we’d consider replacing them over time with a sturdier pair – that said, the lacing system itself is good, and offers snug, stay-put protection around the ankle.

At £100 on the nose, this is our top pick if you need a first walking boot that will venture anywhere you do – it really stands up when compared with more expensive models and punches above its price point.

Great boots

I have purchased several pairs and they are great, the lacing up off the latest pair have changed but for the better.

We had a problem with a three year old pair of boots. You sorted it out & replaced them without quibble. Well done.

This is the second pair I have had they are light don’t require braking in like most. Very comfortable  and good grip for an around brilliant boot

Comfort and endurance

My second pair of these. Really comfortable and hard wearing

Great purchase

Have used these boots for years with dog walking over fields, through woods, and pavements .  Warm, comfortable like a slipper from the beginning, reasonable grip in all conditions,  waterproof, good laces, and last well over 2k miles.  Only downside…….local cobblers can’t repair soles and heels, no idea why. Thoroughly recommend boots and very quick delivery.  In use within minutes.
