The town at the heart of the Luberon

Apt is a town in the middle of the Luberon range without obvious tourist attractions, instead it is a real place where people live and work, and on Saturday mornings the centre of town plays host to the biggest market in the Luberon, with 300 stands in summer.

APT'S OLD TOWN

You can wander through the old part of town with its fountains, squares and grand town houses, finishing up in one of Apt's many bars and restaurants.

Apt's claim to fame though is as the capital of candied fruit. It even has a classification as a "site remarquable du gout" (like a world heritage site for the tastebuds). If you don't like candied fruit, you're in good company, but if you do, then you must visit La Maison du Fruit Confit on the main road into Apt from the west. Here you can taste and buy candied fruit to your heart's content.

For healthier options there is the big Saturday morning market which draws many locals from all around Apt, so it is better to come early if you want to park close by. And Apt also has a farmers' market with local produce only, every Tuesday morning on Cours Lauze de Perret.

THE STORY OF APT

The story of Apt goes back to Roman times. The town stands on the via Domitia, which was the first Roman road built in France, and linked Italy to Spain. Apt was important enough to have the usual Roman accoutrements of thermal baths, forum and amphitheatre. Outside Apt, near Bonnieux there remains the perfectly preserved Roman bridge, the Pont Julien.

The most impressive structure in Apt is the St-Anne cathedral, built over many centuries but started in the 11th. The lower crypt actually was part of a prior 1st-century Roman building. The post-Roman town was surrounded by rampart walls in the middle ages, and you can see remnants of these here and there.

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Renting in moscow: which district to choose.

In 2024 apartments for rent in Moscow, Russia, cost around 1 500 USD per month on average in the central areas of the city (ignoring the elite options). The most affordable rentals are located in districts close to the MKAD (a.k.a. Moscow Ring Road) – these are thrice as cheap, at around 500 USD per month. The New Moscow area has abundant accommodation priced in the range of 600-750 USD per month. These estimates were calculated by our experts upon scrutinizing the long-term rent prices listed in our own real estate database.

The capital city’s most expensive areas are the Khamovniki and Arbat Districts. These two districts are permanently at the very top of various rankings. Today the price of renting in these prestigious neighborhoods is 2 000 USD per month.

Other prestigious districts in central Moscow that have a somewhat lower rental property price tag are the Tverskoy, Yakimanka, Tagansky and Zamoskvorechye Districts. The cost of furnished accommodation in these neighborhoods is around 1 500 USD per month.

Renting a luxury apartment in the famous Moscow International Business Center (a.k.a. Moscow-City) compound currently costs at least 6 000 USD per month for a 130 sqft (40 m²) condo. Moscow-City has a good infrastructure and this option is great for the employees of large international corporations operating from the Business Center itself.

Cheap Flats for Students

The Nekrasovka, Perovo, Biryulyovo and Kapotnya Districts contain many cheap options that can be rented for a short term. In these residential areas of Moscow one can rent a flat in a Soviet era apartment block for 550-700 USD. For this price you will get a two-room flat with a floor area of 147 sqft (45 m²).

When you rent an apartment in Moscow as a foreigner, take care to ensure you are engaging in a safe deal when signing a lease with your future landlord. The real estate market in Moscow is huge and in it one may often come across fraud and the forgery of real estate documents. Another thing to consider is that some landlords may feel entitled to come into your rented home at any time in the day or even night without prior notice. Statement from President Joe   Biden on 25 Years Since the Columbine High School   Shooting

Twenty-five years ago today, two students walked into Columbine High School with assault weapons and other firearms they obtained without background checks. They killed twelve of their fellow students and one teacher, injuring nearly two dozen others, and transforming classrooms into crime scenes. Jill and I continue to pray for the survivors and families impacted by this traumatic event, as well as a community that was forever changed. We know that pain never goes away.  Since Columbine, over 400 school shootings have exposed over 370,000 students to the horrors of gun violence. From Newtown to Parkland to Uvalde, we have seen communities across the nation be torn apart by senseless violence. Students across the country now learn how to duck and cover before they learn how to read and write. This violence must end.  I’ve met with countless families who’ve lost loved ones because of gun violence. Their message is always the same: do something. My Administration has answered their call. We created the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris. I signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun safety legislation in decades. Last week, my Administration implemented the largest expansion of the gun background check requirement since 1993, addressing the loophole that allowed the Columbine shooters to obtain guns. This action means fewer guns will end up in the hands of domestic abusers, felons, minors prohibited from purchasing firearms, and other dangerous individuals. My Administration will continue taking action, but Congress must do their part. We need universal background checks, a national red flag law, and we must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. We need Congress to do something—do something—so that communities won’t continue to suffer due to the epidemic of gun violence.
