Frequently Asked Questions About Finland Tours Packages in Singapore

1. when is the best time to visit finland.

It depends on the activities you wish to fill up your itinerary. Arguably, the best time to visit Finland is during the summer months – June, July, and August. The days during this period are the longest, and the blossoming landscape is at its prettiest. This is also when the tourist facilities and transport services are operating at full capacity. However, if you wish to partake in winter sports or go aurora chasing, then your best bet would be the winter months – November to March. Apart from the snow, the nights during this time are long and midnight dark, which are a must if you wish to view the aurora.

2. How many days is recommended for a trip to Finland?

It depends on what you wish to accomplish during your trip! If you wish to travel within the Arctic Circle or Helsinki, a week or so is sufficient. However, if you wish to travel beyond, you will want to set aside at least two weeks. Many Finland tour packages settle quite nicely in between to give you the best of both worlds.

3. Can I travel to Finland during COVID-19?

Finland represents one of the countries eligible for Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), which means you can travel to the country and, upon return, will not need to quarantine (provided that you meet specific criteria before arrival).

That is on Singapore’s side. It is best that you also take note of the COVID-19 restrictions put in place by the Finnish government, which you can find here .

Our experience with Nordic Unique was great. As a little older group some tours did not appeal to us and they were great about rearranging the itinerary. There could have been a little more communication prior to the trip. I would also suggest some kayaks at the lake. Our guide Matthias (Niales) was awesome!! He was patient, kind, knowledgeable and a great cook.

Rovaniemi Winter Experience Tour

Rovaniemi Winter Experience

Overall the tour was good. we paid to update our room as we wanted a view of the river. The hotel was very good, meals were excellent. We booked an ENGLISH speaking tour. Aurora our guide did speak english but because there were 34 of the 36 people in our group did not. there were 18 spanish and 17 french speaking only! So had no opportunity to converse with others on our tour. At times we felt left out and lonely. we were very disappointed with this aspect of the tour. Especially when it came to instructions with snow mobile, didn't get to hear any english, so my confidence was low and ended up stopping after a short while , and not driving snow mobile, but got in sleigh pulled by Instructor. The husky and reindeer rides were fantastic , the highlight of our trip. The farms were interesting and well kept. The 5 hrs dropped off at Santa Village was too long . we ended up finding our bus and sitting there for an hour or so. Would have nice to be given option of a shorted time. The thermal clothing at Safartica was poor. The items were very used and not at all comfortable. I only ended up using the overalls, and my own boots, balaclava, socks, scarf and mittens. I would not recommend them. Over all we had a great time , but unsure if we would recommend the tour with others.

Finnish Wilderness Week Tour

Finnish Wilderness Week

Alternate accommodations were made for us at the Logging Lodge / Oulangan maja due to gi illness at basecamp. Overall, Martii organized a very good trip, food was great, everyday we did something different. Ismo and Elina were wonderful to work with when Martii was not with us. Loved the Husky sledding day. Glad we went despite changes of plan/ location. Thanks.

What people love about northern lights tours in finland.

We are not normally ones for guided holidays preferring to self explore. However, when this holiday arose we decided to give it a go. A planned holiday in 2021 for our 60th was prevented by COVID. Oh, how we are glad we did. This was the holiday of a lifetime made even better by the unbeatable Alain. From the moment we arrived at our first hotel to helping us checking in at the airport he was a gem. Feels like leaving a friend behind. Trips and tours were exceptional and organised by Alain in such a way to take away any stress or unanswered questions. And how many languages can he speak! In addition trips provided all the time you could want to self explore and discover for yourselves. This has been a dream and full credit to VOS. Already looking at Greenland! Thank you so much

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

For tips on viewing the northern lights, read on. We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about Nordic aurora borealis tours here to help you make your dream trip a reality.

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. ARE THE NORDICS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO?

Yes, the Nordics are widely regarded as safe for visitors. Actually, the Nordic nations – Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – continually rank among the top 10 safest places in the world . This is because they have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety.

2. WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon. You can see them illuminating the sky when charged particles from solar flares collide with atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, near the North Pole. This collision creates varied shapes and colours that ripple, flash or glow in the sky.

3. WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

You have the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in the winter months – October to April. To make out the colours of the aurora, you need dark winter nights. In the summer, daylight hours are so long that you’ll find the sky is too bright to see the glowing lights.

As it is a natural occurrence, spotting the northern lights is not guaranteed. But you can increase your chances of witnessing them by visiting the Arctic Circle in winter.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

As you need a dark sky to distinguish the aurora, the best time to see the northern lights is at night. The peak hours tend to be between 11 PM and 2 AM, which is why your guided tour will likely depart after 9 PM.

You could also stay at a hotel with an aurora wake-up service. The staff will let you know if the lights come out late in the night, so you don’t have to stay up waiting for them!

The best time of year to see the northern lights is winter, between October and April. This is when Nordic nights are the longest and darkest, which means you have higher chances of catching sight of the aurora.

Winter is a great time to visit the Nordics for other reasons too. Check out these guides to the top winter activities you can enjoy:

Things to do in Norway in winter

Things to do in Iceland in winter

Things to do in Lapland in winter

5. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the aurora borealis at high northern latitudes, especially around the Arctic Circle, as this is where solar activity is strongest. That’s why the Nordic region is the best place to see the northern lights. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Svalbard all lie within or near the Arctic Circle.

In fact, Iceland and the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are located within the “aurora zone”. Also known as the “northern lights belt”, this is a latitudinal band between 65-72°N where high auroral frequency and intensity occurs. Visit this zone for the best chance of seeing the aurora.

Learn more about where and when to see the northern lights with these expert guides:

6. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS IN SCANDINAVIA?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the countries that make up Scandinavia. If you want to go to Scandinavia to hunt for the aurora borealis, your best bet is to visit the northern parts of this region – Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway. It is unlikely you’ll see the aurora in Denmark.

You can witness the northern lights in the neighbouring Nordic nations of Finland and Iceland too. Although these countries aren’t technically part of Scandinavia, they have many similarities and also happen to be great places to catch the aurora borealis!

Lapland – an area covering northern Sweden and Finland – is a fantastic destination for aurora chasing. You could head to Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finnish Lapland, or Abisko National Park near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

Or visit Northern Norway for your aurora borealis tour. Take your pick from Norwegian destinations such as Tromsø, Svalbard, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands and Nordkapp (North Cape).

Alternatively, go in search of the aurora borealis in Iceland. With its wide open skies and location near the Arctic Circle, you could see the lights from anywhere in the country. For your best chances though, head away from towns with street lights so you can spot the colours more easily.

In Scandinavia you could seek out the aurora borealis in the countryside or on the coast. Plus, not only can you enjoy northern lights tours, but also bucket list activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and staying in an ice hotel.

Discover more reasons to visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland on our ultimate Scandinavia guide .

7. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

To see the aurora borealis, you need to be in a northern country on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights. Although the aurora don’t show up on demand, these top tips will give you the best chances of witnessing them.

Firstly, make sure you visit northern regions close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland, Northern Norway, Svalbard and Lapland are the best destinations to see the northern lights in Europe.

Secondly, time your aurora borealis tour for the European winter. The long, dark nights will help you spot the colours lighting up the sky.

Thirdly, avoid light pollution found in built-up areas. This means heading into the countryside where there is less artificial light compared to towns and cities. You could spend some days out in remote areas, or opt for guided evening tours from your city base instead.

Another thing you can do for northern light viewings is check the weather and aurora forecast . Although you can’t do this very far in advance, during your trip you’ll be able to find out if the evening will be clear of cloud or rain and if solar activity will be strong.

You’d also increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis by taking a guided tour. A local expert would accompany you and take you to all the best spots, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Read our article on how to see the northern lights for more viewing tips.

8. HOW LONG DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST?

When the aurora borealis are treating you to their glorious light show, you might find they glow for a few minutes. The lights can show up several times in one night, or last for a couple of hours in one go.

There is no rule as to how long the aurora borealis last, of course, as they are a natural occurrence. If you see them for yourself, no doubt you’ll cherish every second of their beautiful magic.

9. HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The northern lights can be tricky to capture on camera, but with some preparation and the right equipment you can do it. Here are some top tips for photographing the northern lights:

  • Use an SLR camera with manual focus
  • Bring a tripod as you’ll need to do a long exposure shot
  • Get a remote shutter release so you don’t have to touch the camera at all
  • Use a slow shutter speed of between 15 and 30 seconds

For more tips on photographing the aurora, see our northern lights travel guide .

10. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

It can get rather cold in the Nordic winter, especially if there’s a cool wind. The last thing you want is to feel the chill while you hunt for the aurora borealis at night. That’s why it’s important you pack the right clothing before your trip.

Many northern lights tours will provide you with thermal suits to help you stay warm while you’re out chasing the aurora. It’s also recommended that you wear warm layers underneath.

Here is an essential packing list:

  • Insulated jacket and trousers (windproof and waterproof)
  • Thermal wool underlayers
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf
  • Warm and sturdy boots

Get more packing advice by reading our experts’ tips and tricks on dressing for northern lights viewing .

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select your chosen arrival date online when reserving your Nordic Visitor tour. For northern lights packages, the arrival dates are between October and April as this is the aurora viewing season.

12. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Absolutely! If you’d like to spend more time in a particular destination, you can request this when booking your tour online. Your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to confirm the extra days with you.

If you are taking a small group tour, you can add extra nights to the start or end of your trip. This is because the group tour itself is fixed as you will be exploring with fellow visitors on a fixed itinerary.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

You should book your flights once your Nordic Visitor package is confirmed. We recommend you check flights beforehand to find appropriate dates and prices, but only purchase them after your travel consultant has secured your northern lights tour.

Your Nordic Visitor consultant will send you a confirmation email with all the details you need to buy suitable flights.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

The weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Nordics, no matter the time of year you visit. In winter you should always come prepared for cold temperatures, which means bringing warm clothing. Here are the essential items that we recommend you pack for your trip:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Waterproof and thermal jackets
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Insulated, waterproof boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Waterproof trousers

For more detailed information on what to pack for your Nordic tour, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway and Lapland .

This holiday has so many highlights spanning across three countries, it's really no overstatement to call it grand! In its simple form, it is a fabulous experience but, we also give you plenty of chances to upgrade to some incredible optional extras and holiday extensions should you wish.

Arriving in Swedish Lapland, this tour starts in the coolest way possible, literally, as you visit the original ICEHOTEL®. There will be plenty of time to explore this world-famous hotel including its chapel and icebar before spending one night in a warm room and one night in an ice room, where you will be tucked up cosy in your Arctic-grade sleeping bag for a unique night's sleep. What a way to start! You can, however, choose to start your holiday the day before, in the south of Lapland, at the exceptional Treehotel, for a night in one of the unforgettable tree-rooms there.

On your third day, you will travel through the wilds of Swedish Lapland and transfer to one of our most popular winter destinations in Finnish Lapland.

Here you will meet the hotel's huskies and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you travel into the wilderness pulled by a team of eager dogs. Furthermore, you'll enjoy a thrilling two hour snowmobile safari.

Of course, we also include two wonderful Northern Lights activities for you here, as you are in the very heart of the Aurora Zone.

After your Finnish adventures, you head even further above the Arctic Circle to the vibrant city of Tromsø, in Norway’s stunning North. This city is where many of the world's greatest adventurers set off on their expeditions and the heritage is wonderful. It is also a remarkably cosmopolitan place and there's a wealth of shops and some fabulous restaurants to enjoy.

You'll have time to explore but we have also included a dedicated Northern Lights hunt here, which leads you far from the city lights in search of an Aurora display.

Should you wish to extend your stay then we can arrange additional nights and activities in Tromsø or some of the surrounding islands. You may also like to take advantage of the fact that the Hurtigruten ferry runs from here, providing access to the whole Norwegian coast should you wish to continue your adventures.

Today is free for you to enjoy all that is on offer at this famous hotel. You can tour the site and visit attractions such as the ice suites, ice bar and ice chapel and there is even the ice store and factory here which are quite fascinating. It is hard to believe that all of the main hotel building simply melts away in the spring when you see how much work has gone into making it!

There are also activities available for you to enjoy and the details of these can be found in the ‘personalise’ section of the holiday page.

Tonight, you will have the unforgettable experience of spending the night in one of the ice rooms at the hotel. Alternatively, we can arrange for you to upgrade to one of the Deluxe or Art Suites if you want to experience the ultimate in ice accommodation (subject to availability). The details of the options can be found in the accommodation section of the holiday page and our travel experts will happily provide you with a quote.

Please note:   Due to availability, your first night might be in an ice room and your second night in a warm room.

A note regarding cold rooms:   Between 10 am and 6 pm, the ICEHOTEL is open to the public; for day visitors and guests to enjoy the art. This means overnight guests get their rooms at 6 pm and the wake-up call is around 7:30 am when staying in a cold room.

Included Meals:   Breakfast

finland northern lights tour singapore

We highly recommend a warming sauna this morning before enjoying a hot shower and some delicious breakfast – it really sets you up for the day ahead!

It is now time to wave farewell to Sweden as you are collected for the next section of your tour. Your driver will take you through the wilds of Sweden as you cover the distance between Sweden and Levi in Finland, your base for the next three nights (approximately 3-4 hours). Your journey will include a stop for lunch (not included). Upon arrival at Levi, you will check into your room and pick up your cold-weather clothing.

Your evening meal will be served in the hotel’s restaurant, then you will be met by an expert local guide who will take you on a heated sleigh ride in search of the Northern Lights. The guide will skillfully manoeuvre your sleigh through the wilderness as you sit in the warm interior and keep an eye on the sky for the Aurora.

Levi’s location and glass-roofed accommodation is ideally situated for Northern Lights viewing, so be sure to keep an eye on the sky when you are not out on your evening activities too.

Included Meals:   Breakfast, Dinner

Today’s activities will see you encounter two of Lapland’s most famous animals.

Firstly, you will hit the trail with a team of willing huskies leading the way.

You can feel the dogs’ excitement as soon as the mushers take the chosen dogs out of their kennels and begin to get them harnessed up to the sledge ready for your safari. You will be given full instruction and a safety briefing before heading out and will travel two people per sledge, with one person standing on the back driving and the other sitting in the sleigh (there will be the chance for you to swap drivers en route).

The safari will cover around 10km and led by the guide will explore the picture-perfect forest. The trail winds its way between the snow-covered trees and all that you can hear is the sound of the dogs’ paws on snow.

After lunch, you will be back in a sleigh for another expedition into the wilderness but this time, you will be pulled by reindeer for a true Lappish experience. The sleigh ride will last approximately 75 minutes.

Included Meals:   Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

finland northern lights tour singapore

Following breakfast, you will enjoy a thrilling snowmobile safari. After a full safety briefing and instructions, you will follow your guide into the wilderness, covering approximately 25-30 km. Following your adventure, you will head back to Levi through snow-clad forests. Two people will share a snowmobile during this activity, which will last for around two hours overall. Please note, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile.

This afternoon you will enjoy private use of the resort’s sauna and hot tub.

Your evening meal will be served in the hotel restaurant and following this, you will have a free evening. Why not head outside and await the magical Aurora, hoping that it will make an appearance tonight? Alternatively, additional Northern Lights activities may be available to book locally.

finland northern lights tour singapore

After a leisurely breakfast, you will check out of your hotel room ready for the next stage in your journey.

Today you will be driven from Finnish Lapland to the city of Tromsø in Northern Norway! The journey time is around five hours in total. You will enjoy some stunning scenery as you travel north and the landscape around you will be constantly changing. You will stop en-route, where you can get some lunch (payable locally), before heading over the mountains into Norway and down to the coast.

Upon arrival in Tromsø you can check in to central hotel and relax. We would then suggest heading out to enjoy the restaurants in Tromsø, it may be a bit of a shock compared to the wilderness of the last few days, but this city deserves its reputation.

Your time in this city has been left so it can be tailored to suit you and so there is plenty of time for independent exploration as well as additional activities in this remarkable place.

Tonight you may like to add in an additional Northern Lights hunt so please see the personalise section for details.

finland northern lights tour singapore

Following breakfast, you will have a free day to spend as you please. We have a large selection of optional activities which can be added in to your holiday so you can tailor your time here. They can all be found in the ‘Personalise’ section of the holiday page.

Tonight you will leave the city lights behind and travel via minibus in the company of an expert local guide to search for the Northern Lights. Snacks and hot drinks will be served around a campfire. You will be out for approximately 5-7 hours.

Dates and Prices

The  ICEHOTEL®  at Jukkasjärvi has the impressive claim of being the world’s first ice hotel and was developed from a concept beginning in 1989. A local entrepreneur by the name of Yngve Bergqvist who ran a thriving tourism business in the summer decided to attract tourists in the winter by offering ice carving workshops and creating a small ice igloo as a gallery to showcase these designs.

This igloo grew in scale each year until one night a group of guests, equipped with reindeer skins and sleeping bags asked to spend the night, creating the concept of the ice hotel in the process!

Although  Ice and snow hotels  can be found across Lapland, the ICEHOTEL® remains the original.

What’s more, 2018 saw the ICEHOTEL® become the first-ever Nordic Swan Ecolabel hotel made completely of ice and snow.

The certification process looks at all areas, from energy and water consumption to waste management; understandably, this presented many challenges when measuring a hotel whose rooms melt away at the end of each winter season!

The eco-label adds to a growing list of certifications for the ICEHOTEL® who is also certified a Sustainable Arctic Destination. Certification ensures guests are choosing environmentally conscious products and the ICEHOTEL® are – rightly so – very proud to receive such recognition.

ICEHOTEL 365

The hotel now boasts ICEHOTEL 365, a permanent structure, allowing it to be a year-round destination to visitors who travel the world to sleep in a room of ice and snow. Containing deluxe rooms, art suites, an ice bar and a sculpture hall, this environmentally sustainable building is a construct of glass, metal and concrete, but with the same incredible standard and visual design of snow and ice on the inside, with cooling tubes to keep it at a temperature of around -5 at all times.

Alongside this is the classic ICEHOTEL® building, constructed purely of ice and snow and carefully crafted each December, utilising blocks from the nearby Torne River.

Home to ice rooms, winter suites and a chapel the structure is a marvel to see and, come summer, simply melts back into the river from which it came. Each year, architects, designers and artists submit designs for the hotel’s features and a handful are chosen to go forward with their theme.

The hotel consists of several buildings including the main ice building and ICEHOTEL 365. We cannot guarantee which area our guests will stay in.

The rooms which are contained within the ice and snow building will not be available until after the 14th of December. Check-in time for the cold rooms is usually around 6 pm and for the warm rooms, it is approximately 3 pm. The ICEHOTEL® is open to members of the public for viewing between 10 am and 6 pm. You will check out after breakfast.

Hotel facilities

  • The reception is in the main warm building which also houses the lounge area, warm bar, dressing room, luggage room, restaurant and gift shop which sells a selection of ICEHOTEL® themed gifts and locally sourced handicrafts
  • Guests who are on a guided tour of the ICEHOTEL® will also visit the large warehouse where you can learn about how the hotel is constructed each season
  • The restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner which include some wonderful Swedish favourites. The restaurant operates fixed dinner seating times and we highly recommend that you make a reservation in advance with us
  • As an alternative, guests can eat at the Homestead Restaurant which is a smaller, rustic restaurant a short walk from the hotel
  • The classic ICEHOTEL® building is connected to a warm building which houses the toilets, showers and sauna. There are also lockers in here in which to store your valuables and clothes overnight
  • The warm building also has a small number of bunk beds in case you decide your ice room is not for you

Personalise This Tour

Searching for the Northern Lights by boat is a fantastic experience that is only available in a handful of locations. The sea can act as the perfect mirror to reflect the Aurora, creating a wonderful sight, should conditions be right. Travelling by boat also means that you have a better chance of outrunning any potential cloud cover.

You will sail into the archipelago, stopping at an island, where you will enjoy hot drinks around a campfire, as you search the skies for the Northern Lights. You may also choose to upgrade this activity to include a wilderness dinner, for a supplement.

Day 6 - Ålesund- Art Nouveau architecture

A winter expedition along the coast of Norway is a beautiful experience. The landscape is covered in pure white snow; the air is fresh, pure and crisp. Clusters of cosy houses glow on the shores like embers, and the stunning backdrop of snow-clad mountains reflects the polar twilight.

Your ship continues north past skerries and islands before reaching Ålesund. Enjoy examples of Art Nouveau style in the Apotekergate and Kongensgate pedestrian precinct. Make sure you see Ålesund from above, taking 418 steps to the top of Mount Aksla. The Atlantic Sea Park (Atlanterhavsparken)-one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Europe is also worth a visit.

Molde - known as the 'Town of Roses' is another exceptional place to catch beautiful views of 222 mountain peaks at the Molde Panorama.

Leaving Ålesund we head north towards Trondheim. Overnight on board the ship.

Day 7 - Trondheim- Medieval city

When visiting the old royal city of Trondheim, be sure to get a good view from the Old Town Bridge. (Gamle Bybrua) Dating from 1861, this neo-gothic wooden bridge used to be the only way into the town centre. Nidaros Cathedral, built between 1070 and 1300 is Norway's largest Gothic religious edifice. In the neighbouring Archbishop's Palace, the Norwegian Crown Jewels are kept. In the city of Trondheim, the Hanseatic, waterside storehouses built on wooden stilts are just as charming as Stiftsgården- the largest wooden building in Norway and residence for the Royal Family when visiting Trondheim.

When leaving Trondheim, you set course for the beautiful Kjerungskjær lighthouse and thousands of little islands and picturesque rocky outcrops. After passing through the narrow Stokksund, the ship will arrive at the charismatic Rørvik.

Day 8 - Welcome to the Arctic Circle and Lofoten

This morning, between Nesna and Ørnes you will pass a globe on a small islet, which heralds your crossing of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle marks the border to the Arctic region. In summer this means 24-hour daylight- often referred to as the Midnight Sun. During autumn and winter, being above this degree of latitude give you the best chance of experiencing the Northern Lights. Passengers sailing in Arctic waters for the first time are given an Arctic Circle Babtism by Njord, the ruler of the Seven Seas. This comes in the form of an ice cube down you front or back but is entirely optional and great fun to watch if you don't want to participate. Heading towards Bodø the ship sails along the Helgeland coast where you will pass the unique Torghatten mountain with its 30-metre-high, 25-metre-wide and 160-metre-deep hole through the middle.

In the afternoon, your ship gradually closes in on the Lofoten wall mountains towering above the tiny and colourful fishing villages of the Lofoten Islands. This is an extraordinary place to disembark and take a stroll.

These islands are renowned for their small, picturesque fishing villages with their bohemian atmosphere surrounded by majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches. Complete your visit with a stroll between the stockfish racks and 'rorbuer', the traditional red fisherman's residences.

Day 9 - Tromsø - The Arctic Capital

During the night the ship navigates the narrow Raftsund strait. After a stop in Harstad situated on the largest island of Norway- Hinnøya, you continue via Finnsnes to Tromsø for a extended stay.

Many of the epic Arctic expeditions used Tromsø as a starting point- the famous explorer Roald Amundsen sourced both crew and suppliers here. With the presence of the Norwegian Polar Institute, the city has cemented its position as the Polar Capital of Norway.

Ishavskatedralen, the Arctic Cathedral is a unique landmark well worth visiting. Experience Tromsø's best views by taking the Fjellheisen cable car to the top of the mountain ledge Storsteinen and maybe enjoy a beer from the worlds northernmost brewery.

After Tromsø we continue our northbound journey into the area along the coast where you have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Gather on deck or under the glass roof to search for this breathtaking phenomenon.

Day 10 - Honningsvåg and the North Cape

Today you sail through Magerøysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvåg. This small port is the gateway to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape, which rises 300m from the ocean, and at 71° 10' 21" north ocean puts you a mere 2,000 km from the Geographical North Pole. Standing atop the North Cape Plateau you will feel like you are at the end of the world.

This area is also known for its birdlife, and Gjesværstappen, a bird sanctuary with up to 250,000 seabirds is home to some High Arctic species that can only be observed here on the Norwegian mainland, including the gorgeous puffins.

In summer you might see herds of reindeer and campsites belonging to the indigenous Sámi people. In winter and spring, sometimes local fishermen from the village of Kjøllefjord visit us to share their catch of the day- Cod and King Crab. And make sure as you approach Kjøllefjord you take note of the prominent and sacred to indigenous Sámi people, Finnkirka rock formation.

Day 11 - Arrive in Kirkenes and join a King Crab Safari adventure

You will arrive in Vadsø early in the morning. Located in the Varanger region this is one of the most attractive and popular bird-watching areas in the Arctic due to it being directly in the path of the birds migrating from east to west.

The last port on the Voyage North is Kirkenes. The well policed Russian border and the Koala peninsula are close by which explains why the road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian.

Disembark the ship and get ready for a totally unforgettable experience on the frozen fjords of Kirkenes. This is your chance to catch, learn how to cook, and most importantly eat the Arctic King Crab. If you enjoy eating crab, be sure to arrive HUNGRY!

The Arctic King Crab is one of the most sought-after meals in top restaurants, and yet here, you get to eat the best and the freshest, pulled from the fjord in front of your eyes. You all take part in helping to saw the hole in the ice and bring up the catch. You will see how the crab is prepared by your master guide, and you will be taken by snowmobile sled (an experience in itself) to a beautiful farmhouse by the lake.

It is here by a cosy log fire that your King Crab meal awaits. Although presentation is simple, the superb, white leg meat and claws with their particularly juicy and naturally sweet taste puts this meal in a league of its own.

Warm clothing and a helmet is provided. Please note: This tour is done by snowmobile (the fisherman drives the snowmobile with you in a sled behind the snowmobile), and not by divers or in a boat.

Today you will visit and see the snow rooms at the Snowhotel . Explore this hand-built snow hotel and perhaps enjoy a drink at the icebar (extra cost) before heading to your Gamme pine cabin, a short walk away in the same resort.

Your evening will then progress to a delicious 3 course dinner. The food served is charmingly traditional and locally sourced. Your guide will be available to help you prepare for the evening ahead, making sure you are as comfortable as possible. After dinner you will have the opportunity to walk around the snowhotel and say hello to our resident reindeers, and with any luck, catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

Day 12 - Transfer to Inari/Ivalo and check into your Glass Roofed Cabin

After breakfast, take a drive through wild forests and around pristine lakes to Inari, the Sami capital (traditional nomads of Scandinavia, reindeer herders).

In Inari we will have lunch and a guided tour at Sami Siida Museum - the national museum of the Sámi and a national special museum in Finland. The guide will help you to have an in-depth view of Siida’s permanent exhibitions. Siida’s exhibition tours cover the permanent exhibitions of the house.

From Inari we will continue to the Aurora Village, our home for the next 3 nights. (23rd November 2024 departure will stay in a Aurora Cabin at Inari Wilderness)

Check in to your glass roofed Aurora Cabin where you will be spending three nights. You will also get your Winter clothing set (winter boots, balaclavas, woolen socks, mittens, overalls, tube scarf).

Dinner is included at the restaurant.

Day 13 - Reindeer Safari & Snowmobile Safari

After breakfast, meet the reindeers. In the old days people used reindeer for transportation. Today you will meet the local reindeers at work, Manu, Pelokas and Papu. Papu will take you for a short reindeer sleigh ride. In a traditional Kota-tent you will have tea, coffee and a small snack by the open fire while our Sámi-reindeer herder tells you stories about reindeer. You can also try your skills at throwing lasso!

In the afternoon, join an exciting snowmobile safari. You will be kitted out in warm clothing before leaving. Two persons share one snowmobile and there will be an opportunity to change drivers during the safari.

Afterwards, if the skies are clear, head out for a walk to look for the northern lights! Dinner at the restaurant.

Day 14 - Husky Safari and farewell dinner

After breakfast, get ready for today's husky safari - an unforgettable journey through breathtaking winter scenery.

On arrival at the husky farm, dressed in your warm outer thermal suit, gloves and hat, you will be presented with your very own husky team. You will be given a lesson on how to drive the sledge and how to observe important hand signals given by your leader.

Each team consists of about six dogs, you, the driver, and your passenger who is comfortably seated in the wooden sledge. The driver and the passenger can change places during the safari.

In the evening we will enjoy a special farewell dinner. Toast your trip with your fellow group members!

Day 15 - Transfer to Ivalo Airport

After breakfast, self-transfer to Ivalo Airport. You can add an extra few days in Helsinki and a day tour to Tallinn as an extended package.

Price per person, seaview superior with a double bed. Any other cabin type including twin cabins are subject to price and availability. Upgrade only possible to request for the Coastal Voyage part of itinerary.

NOTE: TWIN bed requests are only possible for the Coastal Voyage, Fretheim, Kirkenes Snow Hotel and Aurora Village. Oslo and Bergen hotels can not be guaranteed.

IMPORTANT: Only Snow room available in Kirkenes for departures on February 19th and March 7th

Important Information

PLEASE NOTE: All departures have unspecified superior outside cabins with windows on the Norwegian coastal voyage, we are able to upgrade cabins on request, but subject to availability.

Activities differ when travelling in Autumn (before the snow arrives). Autumn Activites in Ivalo will be a husky wagon ride, Wood sauna experience and Aurora hunting by car.

We recommend arriving into Oslo a day or so before the tour starts and enjoying this city. The first few days on tour is very busy and not being affected by jetlag will help you enjoy the activities. We also offer an extention tour to Helsinki and Tallinn after your tour.

You can pre-book your optional Norwegian Coastal Voyage excursions with us. However, you can also wait until you are on board and do it then - however, there is a maximum number and they can book out (unlimited numbers on the North Cape tour). It is not possible to pre-book within 2 weeks prior to departure. Excursions and their contents are subject to maximum/minimum numbers and weather/local conditions. Our 50 Degrees North escort will also be available to take you on a casual walk through the main cities that you visit during your Norwegian Coastal voyage.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH INFORMATION:

All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy group travel . During winter, roads and footpaths can be icey so please consider carefully how much luggage you bring as you will be responsible for carrying all the luggage on these outside paths. There is limited portage service in Scandinavia and your tour escorts cannot help you, beyond reason.

Scandinavia is a fairly accessible destination for people with restricted mobility and other disabilities and is actively working to be more accessible every day. However, please note that our group tours are often not suitable for persons with limited accessibility due to inclusions and pace. 50 Degrees North is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability and we can tailor-make independent itineraries for travellers when needed. Please contact us for further details.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL:

Several of your accommodations on this itinerary are Nordic Choice hotels, who we support due to their outstanding sustainability policies. This group of hotels are ISO 14001 certified (which is given to enterprises that have a high-quality environmental managing system), has launched plastic free initiatives in partnership with WWF, where possible is powered by renewable energy and are taking great strides to reduce water consumption and reduce the use of chemicals. Even though access to water is not an issue in Nordic countries compared to other parts of the world, this hotel is conscious of the energy consumed for heating, and chemicals required for purification, so reduction makes up part of their overall environmental policy. In addition to this they provide sustainable, organic, fair-trade food, and only use sustainably produced palm oil. Your hosts also encourage guests to eat less meat and substitute this for plant-based alternatives.

Your glass igloo hosts in Ivalo were the first accommodation in Northern Lapland to receive the Green Key award, the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. This prestigious eco-label represents a commitment by businesses that their premises adhere to the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Some examples of how they carry this out include offering recycling facilities in all cabins and no longer offering plastic bottles in accommodations, along with protecting the diversity of the surrounding nature, i.e., bird house and insect hotels. Hiking, biking, and skiing tracks are direct from the hotel and as such they encourage low carbon activities such as snowshoeing and toboggans.

Your journey along the iconic Norwegian coastline comprises a large element of this tour. Traditionally the company Hurtigruten had exclusive access to this route, but in 2017 the Norwegian government ended their 130-year monopoly by granting Havila access and allowing them to also take travellers along the coastline. With this change comes innovation; traditionally the ships on this route are powered by fossil fuels however the Havila ships are fitted with batteries and can partly run on renewable hydroelectric power. Not only will the lack of noise and emissions improve the tourist experience and disruption to the environment, but the approach is essential to meet the strict zero emissions regulations for the fjord region to be introduced by the Norwegian government later this decade. We are proud to partner with Havila for this journey, and welcome their newer, greener ships.

Please note this tour is not suitable for children under the age of 14.

7 nights 10 Days Finland Trip by Chan Brothers Travel Singapore

Before I proceed,I want all who reads this to know that I am representing my friends too in this review about our recent 10 day tour to Finland. The main attraction of the trip was to see the Northern Lights. However, we didn’t get to see the lights even on a night that has an index of 6 with 80% chances of seeing the lights. This is because Chan brothers travel did not mention or have no idea that there are local Aurora hunting trips or some call it Northern lights hunting trip which only costs a mere 45euro which we would definitely have joined because that’s the highlight of the trip after paying so much! Chan brother provided a Northern light hunting that only lasts for 2 hours which ended at 11 because that’s when the coach driver’s work ends which we understood and accept. All those that had experienced seeing the lights says that it usually appears past midnight. But because we had no idea of the optional local tour, we went back the hotel at 11pm. And true enough many that were in Rovaniemi that night saw the Aurora Lights at about 1 plus while we slept the night away like fools! I only found out about the local hunting trips at the reception the next morning after chatting with the receptionists because they were excited thinking we saw the lights! And the other activities which we were very unhappy was the reindeer-sleigh rides, husky rides and snow biking which were part of the highlights and was also the reason why Chan Brothers cost more than Dynasty Travel. It was very unfair and unacceptable because knowing the short daylight in Finland at this time of the year, we should be able to have at least one or two of the activities early so that we can see the forest that the huskies and reindeers was driving us thru. Instead, we had all the three main activities passed 3pm in absolute darkness!!! It was no difference to riding a underground MRT or a bus in the night to Genting!!! Everyone complained about that. Many of us asked the guide and she said the company arranged it! What lousy and unfair arrangement!!! My friends who went with EU tours had all their activities in the day! I must say that Chan Brothers is lucky that this particular group of tourists was all educated and well mannered people, however if I would to ask around today and offer a petition I think more than half would agree with what I have written here on this page because this was truly what happened. I paid S$5000 plus per pax this trip all I got was to see the snow which I should have gone to Hokkaido and only one little good experience was the one night stay in the glass igloo. But mind you every travel agency can arrange that. So think and find out clearly so you don’t have any regrets like me and my friends before you pick and book a tour with a travel agency! Please note that the guide was not all fault, in fact when one of my friend fell and fractured her wrist, she took some time to go to the local hospital with us. I am just so pissed off when my friends asked me why I missed the lights? Why my activities are all in darkness!!! Why why why!!!! Chan Brothers why??? Chris Lee

Good day! I have read your review and feel sorry that you had a negative experience in Finland. However, would you kindly email me your name and dates of the tour, because I am not believe that we have arranged the tour for Chan Brothers on this occasion. If you can send me your dates of travel, group size etc - I can clarify if we operated at the DMC for your tour. Many thanks, Sarah Managing Director

Tomas provided us with an incredible visit to Finland. He drove us through the countryside, showed us where he lived and told us about the rural life in Finland. We had a great visit at the quaint little town of Porvoo. We went back to Helsinki where we had a fresh lunch at the fishmarket and did some sight seeing and shopping. Tomas was very accommodating and made sure we saw everything we could in the amount of time we had. We had lots of great conversations about the effects of global warming in this area and he showed us much more than expected. Thanks for a great visit!!! Highly recommended!

The experience was one of the best things I have ever done ! It was perfect from the beginning of the day being picked up at our apartment by our friendly driver. We took a 45 minute journey outside Helsinki through a snowy wonder land . Where we taken to a frozen lake to meet the beautiful huskies and their owner. We helped with the dogs on to sledge and my partner and I were taken across a frozen lake and through woodland. The dogs were manificant our guide told us all their names. We went out to a wooded area were we had camp fire sausages marshmallow s and tea. It was a magical experience and well organised thank you to all the wonderful people we met that day xx

We did a Husky sleigh ride tour organized by Kontiki. We got a great preparation from the booking. Plus they really took care of all our wishes and provided us with a great transportation to the national park outside of Helsinki. Needless to say that the husky tour itself was a unique and amazing experience and one of the highlights of our winter trip to Helsinki. If you are around Helsinki and are keen on enjoying something special, we really recommend you to take a look on the offerings. The team is really among the best we have experienced so far!

Thank you for your kind review of our Day Tour! We are very pleased that your day went smoothly and so nice to hear that you recommend us to others! Welcome again any time :)

We used Kontiki Finland to book the Husky Dog Sledding in Helsinki - we were picked up from our hotel right on time by the lovely and friendly taxi driver. He drove us approx. 45 mins to the national park where we met with Tomas who introduced us to the Huskys. This was by far the best thing I have ever done, it was so much fun spending time with the friendly dogs and learning about the sledding. The actual sledding itself went for about 45 minutes through the national park and at the end we had plenty of time with photos with the dogs and time to drink our coffee and eat marshmellows by the fire.

Hi Laura, Thank you for writing! We are so glad that you had a great time last week - the conditions have been really picture perfect as well this year :) All the best for your future travels!

I had a wonderful experience working with Kontiki tours. Tomas ensured that it was an unforgettable day as he took care of every aspect of the dog sledding excursion. I was particularly impressed with the personal touches and attention to detail. I would highly recommend anyone traveling to Helsinki and looking for a fun half-day trip, to work with Kontiki and enjoy one of its excursions.

Thanks for sharing your experience - we really do try to make every guest feel looked after and glad to know that it's working :) All the best!

Bookings to view northern lights in 2024 up as stronger, more frequent displays expected

finland northern lights tour singapore

SINGAPORE – Travel agencies and hotels are expecting a swell of northbound travellers towards the Arctic Circle to view the northern lights in 2024.

The cosmic light displays, also known as aurora borealis, are expected to be more frequent and stronger in 2024 due to higher solar activity.

Travel companies contacted by The Straits Times said they have received a significant increase in inquiries and bookings for tours or accommodation in countries where the lights can be spotted, such as Finland and Iceland.

Travel booking site Klook reported a sevenfold increase in bookings for northern lights tours from August to December 2023, with a tenth of these from Singapore.

A Klook spokesperson said online traffic for hotels in Finland tripled in the second half of 2023, compared with the first half of the year.

Chan Brothers Travel senior marketing communications manager Jeremiah Wong said the company has a 30 per cent increase in bookings for northern lights-related trips in 2024 compared with the year before.

He said: “The anticipation of 2024 being the most promising year for northern lights viewing in over two decades is contributing to the heightened interest.”

Chan Brothers offers eight northern lights tours to destinations in northern Europe. A 13-day tour to Finland’s Lapland region, for instance, starts at $7,488. Meanwhile, Klook offers 14 northern lights packages to Iceland and Finland, such as a Magical Auroras Northern Lights tour that lasts three to four hours and costs US$94.25 (S$127).

Hotels in popular northern lights destinations have observed more worldwide interest from travellers wishing to catch the natural phenomenon.

A spokesperson from the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel in northern Norway told ST that the property has had a “strong increase in bookings related to the northern lights”, while Mr Ryan Sheldon, experience director at Sheldon Chalet in Alaska, said the hotel has been receiving more inquiries.

“Everybody is talking about the northern lights. Our guests have recently been able to view them three out of four nights,” Mr Sheldon added.

The increased northern lights displays are a result of the solar cycle peaking in 2024. Besides light and heat, the sun also sends energy and small particles towards Earth via solar winds or solar storms, according to American space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

During a solar storm, some of the energy and small particles can amass at the north and south poles in the planet’s atmosphere. There, the particles mix with gases in Earth’s atmosphere to produce light displays called auroras.

Said Dr Abel Yang from the National University of Singapore’s department of physics: “A solar cycle is an approximately 11-year period when sunspot activity rises and falls. At solar maximum, there can be large sunspots that last over a month.

“These sunspots are an indication of heightened solar activity. The overall effect is that the solar wind will be stronger, so the auroras will also be stronger.”

Singaporeans such as Ms Jacqueline Phua, 32, plan to head north for the prospect of more spectacular aurora sightings.

“I heard there would be more solar activity in 2024 and decided to make this the year I go and see it,” said the civil servant.

She is prepared to spend around $7,000 to see the auroras at the end of 2024, and is deciding between Norway and Iceland as a destination.

Ms Phua added: “Viewing the northern lights has been on my bucket list for many years. I kept putting it off because I thought it would be too expensive, but I think it’ll be worth it.”

For creative director Ian Ketsumasa, 35, who solemnised his marriage in Iceland in November 2023, seeing the auroras was the icing on the cake for him and his wife. The couple spent two weeks in Iceland.

Mr Ketsumasa said they did not actively search for the northern lights, but were lucky enough to see them five days in a row.

“The scenery was breathtaking, and it was always a place we wanted to explore, so seeing the lights made it more memorable,” he added.

Our Finland tour from Singapore - An amazing Journey

Our introduction, why we decided to visit finland , our research about finland tour, our finland tour itinerary from singapore, hotel details of our finland tour from singapore, our journey experience of finland.

I am Seng Huat, a resident of Singapore, and I was recently married to a beautiful woman. We both work for a finance company in Singapore. Merry and I already had plans of visiting Finland ; plans were getting finalized before marriage only. Usually I do all my tours on my own, but this was special, and I did not want any last-minute surprises.Anyway, we will share our Finland tour from Singapore experience in brief in this article.

Special thanks to the Lestacworld PR team for encouraging us to write about the tour and our experiences.

Well, why we decided to visit Finland is a crucial question.Merry, even before meeting me, had a dream to visit the Arctic Circle and see the northern lights. To be very honest, I was not even aware of the Northern Lights concept before Marry told me about it. She used to keep talking and explaining the concepts, and those were the days we decided that we would surely visit the Arctic Circle in Finland.

We actually went to Finland after 11 months of our marriage because, in 2022, we got late in planning the tour, and the northern lights phenomenon exists only a few months a year.

We actually started researching for the Finland tour from Singapore around January 2023.By the time we knew about the best season to visit, we were sure that we were going to visit Lapland, and we wanted to stay in an Igloo room.

Initially, we thought of giving it a shot on our own, and I and Merry started connecting with the local vendors in Finland and Lapland. Soon, we realized that it was going to be a daunting task because the tour vendors would not respond to you the way someone else would in any other tourist destination.

Although we were not sure how to go with it, we almost got all the clarity about the itinerary and tours on our own. Then we started researching for a travel company that specializes in Finland as a destination. Merry I landed at finlandtour.fi on the itinerary pages for Finland. We found the itineraries as per our interest, and we contacted customer support at finlandtour.fi on Wattsapp.

Fortunately, they were quick to respond and answered our queries with clarity. Our first point of contact was Denny. We asked him to customize the itineraries that were already on their website, as per our requirements, and within 3 hours, we got the itinerary we wanted.

I was still not convinced because the company was new to us and I wanted to do some more research about it. After 2-3 days of research and price analyses, we then realized that we should not miss the deals and availabilities.A special mention goes to Mr. Joesph & Denny, who tolerated our questions and made customizations.

We soon booked our tickets and paid the initial amount to finlandtour.fi.

Below is the itinerary mr and Merry Finlaised for our Finland tour from Singapore –

  • Day 1: Pickup from Helsinki Airport and check-in to your hotel to begin your 7-night, 8-day trip of Finland
  • Day 2: Breakfast + Porvoo tour of 5 hours from Helsinki + Return to Hotel + Free Day
  • Day 3: :Breakfast + Checkout + transfer to Airport + Flight to Ivalo + transfer to kakslauttanen resort + checkin to Glass Igloo 15:00 hrs (Dinner Included)Day 4: Breakfast + 2 hours of snowmobile Safari + free day (Dinner Included)
  • Day 5: Breakfast + Checkout from igloos + transfer to Rovaniemi City + Keep your Language at Santa”s Hotel Santa Claus + Santa Claus Village tour + Check-In to hotel
  • Day 6: Checkout + Icebreaker Sampo tour and return around 4:30 PM+ Transfer in the evening to train station + Train Journey to Helsinki
  • Day 7: Arrival At helsinki railway station + transfer to Hotel + free day
  • Day 8: Breakfast, Checkout, Transfer to Airport, and End of the tour

Well, the start of our journey was not that fruitful because of airline hiccups. We actually booked the premium economy, but we were forced to sit in the economy seat due to some misunderstanding. Obviously, there were some freebies against that, but we rejected them. Any way, the next belt went smoothly, and I reached Finland from Singapore smoothly.

When we reached Helsinki, our car was waiting for us at the airport. Woohoo, the city is beautifully amazing. I loved the city at first sight. It took us around 30 minutes to reach our hotel, the Radisson Blu Plaza.Nice hotel with cute small rooms, but more than enough for us 2.

After some rest, we went out for a walk, and trust me, this will be the best phase of Helsinki. Don’t miss that. Go and explore everything by foot.

The next day, we went to Porvoo City from Helsinki. What a mesmerizing village that is.Beauty with ancient, colorful structures. The day went well; the driver and car came on time, made us explore Porvoo City with comfort without being worried about any other aspect, and left us back at the hotel. That day again, we went out to the nearby places, like

  • The Finnish National Theater
  • Ateneum Art Museum
  • University of Helsinki
  • Design Museum Helsinki
  • Aleksanterinkatu
  • Esplanade Park

Our experience of the Lapland tour was memorable, and this is because we succeeded in witnessing the northern lights during our stay in the Igloo room.Though Helsinki was dead cold, Lapland is too much. If you are from a coastal area like us and are planning to visit Lapland in the winter, do spend on clothing. We were told by finlandtour.fi’s executives to rent the clothing, and that is what we did right before boarding our flight from Singapore to Finland.

Next for us was an Igloo stay in Kakslauttanen; it was a small Igloo room for us. The only drawback was that we should have opted for a large igloo’s or Kelo igloo room. These categories also have the option of bathing, whereas small igloos only have the facility of toilets.

We did a snowmobile safari for 2 hours here, which was outstanding. It was too cold, but this adventure should never be missed. The second night, there were a range of alarms all around the premises, and yes, that alarm was for northern lights, which we could witness from our igloos. This made our trip successful, and we realized that the itinerary planned and executed was perfect.

We checked out of the property in the morning and started our journey to Rovaniemi, which took us around 3 hours. Straight away, before visiting the hotel, we left for the Santa Claus village tour. The best part of Santa Claus Village is that you can cross the article circle boundary and get a certificate.

The next day, early in the morning, was the Icebreaker Tour, another once-in-a-lifetime experience. I mean, who would not want to lie down on a sea of ice, and that too when you are on a cruise that will break the ice? I cannot express how amazing that feeling was.

These were a few amazing memories of our tour, all thanks to finlandtour.fi for the best deal, service, and support.

Comment (1)

Nice share of thoughts, would you recommend the company if compared with other major agencies like EU or Chan brothers? Their prices are quoted way higher.

Fake views: Singapore creates artificial northern lights over park

A nyone who wants to marvel at the northern lights can now do so not only in Norway, Finland and Iceland, but also in Singapore, where city gardens have engineered an artificial aurora borealis spectacle using lasers and machine-made clouds.

A new light installation entitled " Borealis " is launching on May 5 in Singapore's nature park Gardens by the Bay. The centrepiece of the park are a group of so-called Supertrees - 18 futuristic tree-like constructions with more than 160,000 plants growing on their metal frames.

For years, these living sculptures have been exploding into colour every evening at dusk in a Garden Rhapsody light show. In the latest spectacle, 30 lasers and machines that generate cloud particles have now been mounted on the trunks.

The aim is to create a special effect: It almost seems as if real northern lights are shining in the sky, the Straits Times newspaper wrote after an exclusive preview.

The artificial aurora borealis, created by Swiss artist Dan Archer, is accompanied by a moody soundtrack composed by France's Guillaume Desbois.

Opened in 2012, the Gardens by the Bay are located in the centre of the Southeast Asian city state. Admission to the 101-hectare complex on the Marina Bay waterfront is free. Information is available at www.gardensbythebay.com .

The so-called Supertrees of Singapore's Gardens by the Bay already light up during evening shows, but now special lasers are set to create artificial northern lights. Carola Frentzen/dpa
