11 best excursions + day trips in Lanzarote (our reviews)

by Claire ROBINSON , Region Lovers | November 18, 2023 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)

Visiting Lanzarote means discovering a variety of landscapes: volcanoes, caves, lagoons, cliffs, beaches… And you don’t always have to take your car. See our selection of the best excursions in Lanzarote to admire the different landscapes, have fun, go off-road or hop over to Fuerteventura. This guide also includes some of the best boat excursions in Lanzarote to discover the island from another point of view.

best lanzarote excursions

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Lanzarote’s most beautiful excursions – quick answers

If you don’t want to read everything, we recommend these 4 excursions to see the best of Lanzarote:

  • Admire the landscapes of Timanfaya National Park and a best-of of the island – see program and availability
  • Dolphin cruise – see our preferred option
  • Discover the works of César Manrique, including the caves – see program and availability
  • A day trip to the island of La Graciosa – see bus + ferry option

Most excursions can take you to the 3 main areas of Lanzarote: Playa Blanca, Playa del Carmen and Costa Teguise. But be sure to check first.

1. Excursion to Timanfaya only

Timanfaya National Park is the best excursion in Lanzarote. It’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth.

Lanzarote Excursions - TImanfaya Tour

Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil. Access is limited, with just one road and a bus to take you out to see the scenery.

This route offers fantastic panoramas of the many volcanic craters (formed mainly between 1730 and 1736), different types of lava and incredible colors. It’s a much-visited attraction, but it’s well done and well worth the effort.

first minute travel lanzarote excursions

If you don’t want to rent a car, there are excursions from all the resorts (Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise) and the cruise terminal.

  • A half-day which covers only the journey to Timanfaya, the fire experience at the restaurant and the park tour by bus – See program and availability

Tip: We recommend sitting on the right-hand side of the bus when taking the Timanfaya bus. There are beautiful things to see on both sides, but some of the best views will be to your right.

2. A little of everything in Lanzarote – day trip

You can also combine the park with other attractions over a full day. This way, you can discover more of Lanzarote’s beauty. We particularly like the option that adds the green lagoon, César Manrique’s Jameos del Agua cave and the Geria vineyard.

See program and availability

Here are the other locations in addition to Timanfaya:

Excursions in lanzarote - Green Lake

Here, at Charco de los Clicos , the combination is exceptional: a green lagoon, the remains of the volcano with red, yellow and black rocks, and the black sand beach. The volcanic crater was formed during eruptions in the 1730s and flooded by the ocean. With erosion, only half the cone remains.

Excursions in Lanzarote - Los Hervideros

Yes, there are vineyards on Lanzarote. It’s quite amazing, but by using picon on the soil to capture moisture and creating small rock walls to protect from the wind, they are able to grow grapes and make wine! You’ll visit the most famous bodega: La Geria, with its impressive valley.

first minute travel lanzarote excursions

We think it was one of the most frustrating things about Lanzarote. This pool in Jameos des Agua is so inviting!!!! Isn’t it? Here, César Manrique transformed part of a long lava tunnel that had collapsed in several places. There’s an underground lake, restaurants and an amphitheatre…

3. Dolphin-watching boat trip

Dolphins off Lanzarote

We love the whale and dolphin watching tours. We had high hopes, and were lucky enough to see an impressive number of dolphins. A wonderful experience with the Lanzarote landscape in the background. You can also often see bottlenose dolphins in the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote. See our article .

Dolphins around Lanzarote

Choose from 4 tour formats:

Option 1 – Daytime speedboat – duration 1h30 with swimming See details and availability Option 2 – sunset speedboat – 2h30 with champagne See details and availability Option 3 – fast boat and Lobos Island – 5h with discovery of part of Lobos Island See details and availability Option 4 – Catamaran sunset cruise – 2h See details and availability There are resident dolphins all year round. Some say that June is the best month to see many of them, but we haven’t found confirmation.

4. Tour of César Manrique’s works

César Manrique left an indelible mark on Lanzarote thanks to his commitment to respecting the environment and integrating himself into it. His works on the island are surprising, combining the work of nature with discreet, curving architecture that blends with the rock.

César Manrique Foundation

It’s not possible to visit all the places linked to the artist in a single day. But you can discover some of it. We recommend this excursion: see program and availability .

It covers a good variety of locations:

  • Monumento al Campesino highlights local culture
  • The César Manrique Foundation
  • Mirador del Rio, hidden in the cliffs with breathtaking views

Cactus Garden

  • The Cactus Garden, a must-see
  • Jameos de Lagua, in a lava tube with lake and pool

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

5. Excursion to the island of La Graciosa

La Graciosa is a small island to the north of Lanzarote. Access is by ferry and there are no roads at all, just tracks in the sand. You can explore it on foot or with one of the 4WD cabs. Unlike Lanzarote, it is covered in golden-white sand. But there are also a few volcanoes. The colors are magnificent and you can enjoy different landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry crossing is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote. See our article .

beach in La Graciosa

We recommend taking the first ferry in the morning to avoid the crowds who come to spend the day at the beach. Ferries depart from Orzola. Note that for those staying in Playa Blanca, it takes longer to get to the north (1h10min by car). 2 companies offer ferries from Lanzarote to La Graciosa. See departures and book or book with bus pick-up . And on site, we recommend hiring a 4WD cab to explore the island’s most beautiful landscapes: book your 4WD tour in advance!

Another option if you don’t rent a car is to take part in a day’s sailing on a catamaran around La Graciosa – see program .

arch in La Graciosa

6. Volcano hiking

The best way to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes is by hiking. The island offers a wide choice of hikes of varying lengths and difficulty. See our favorite hikes .

If you don’t want to hike alone, you can join a group. Here’s a small-group option around Timanfaya: see program and availability Or head north to the La Corona volcano and its impressive views: see program and availability .

7. Immerse yourself in the world of Lanzarote wine

If Lanzarote’s vineyards fascinate you, given the island’s extreme climatic conditions, you can combine a hike, a vineyard tour and a wine tasting! Find out more about Lanzarote wine in our article .

This tour takes you to La Géria bodega, the island’s most famous. You can hike in the valley surrounded by vineyards protected by low walls. The views are exceptional! And you can enjoy one of the island’s most famous white wines to reward yourself after the effort!

Vignobles La Géria

8. Alternative excursions

You can also go off the beaten track to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes from a different angle. Depending on your sporting or mechanical desires, you can go exploring:

  • by eBike – see program and availability
  • by buggy – see program and availability

buggy in Lanzarote

9. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the Corralejo dunes

Another classic is to set aside a day to discover the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It’s so close and yet so different. The landscapes are more mountainous and less volcanic. It has better beaches but not the same charm as Lanzarote, in our opinion. The island is large, so you’ll only be able to discover the north. But you’ll spend some time in the sand dunes of Corralejo . And we love it! It’s an opportunity to discover another side of the Canary Islands.

Coralejo Dunes

10. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the island of Lobos

But if you want to keep with the volcanic theme, you can also book a fairly free excursion that takes you to spend some time on the beautiful little island of Lobos and also to the town of Corralejo on Fuerteventura. Lobos Island is one of our favorite spots in the Canaries. It’s like entering another world.

Lobos Island

11. Catamaran to Papagayo beaches

Lanzarote’s southwest coast is a must-see. Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island’s main attractions. Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).

catamaran along the coast of Lanzaorte

You can explore it on foot, or via an unpaved track. Or you can take a boat out to sea and admire the wilderness. Just be aware that you won’t be able to get to the beaches from the boats.

Catamaran Papagayo

From Puerto del Carmen: Catamarans allow you to explore the entire south coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins. You can swim or kayak around the boat. See program and availability

From Playa Blanca: You’ll discover these magnificent landscapes on a yacht. You can swim and stand-up paddle around the boat. See program and availability

Lanzarote, an island to be discovered

Lanzarote is an island where its volcanic, black and red landscape, will make you feel in a different world. You will find a land of silence and tranquility, an island where you feel at home by the treatment of its hospitable people who have known how to respect the landscape and learn to survive in a place where water is scarce. Lanzarote enjoys mysterious landscapes and a recognized ecosystem of great value. It is an ideal environment to relax and get lost in its volcanoes, caves or virgin beaches. If you pause, you will breathe in the peace of the island and you will feel as far away as if you were visiting the moon.

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park: A lunar landscapee

Timanfaya is another world, with a Martian landscape resulting from the eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736, and again in 1824, where the scarce vegetation, the variety of lava, and their original colors create one of the most impressive landscapes all over the Canary Islands.

Lanzarote Tours FAQS

At OkLanzarote we offer you:

  • The best selection of tours and activities for guaranteed satisfaction.
  • Personalized treatment . Our Customer Service will be available every day of the year from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for any questions or incidents.
  • A leisure guide to Lanzarote when you book with us.
  • Best price guaranteed . You won’t find the same excursions for less.
  • Complete information on each excursion and the closest pick-up to your accommodation.
  • Guaranteed satisfaction as shown by our clients’ comments and evaluations.
  • More than 10 years of experience in the Canary Islands.

For the bus excursions, when making your reservation and entering the data of your accommodation or address, the closest pick-up place and time to your accommodation will appear automaticall y. A photo of the collection point and a map with directions on how to get to the collection point will appear on the reservation voucher.

We do not offer pick-ups at all hotels to speed up the pick-up time for all clients.

In the other excursions, once you make your reservation, we’ll contact you to provide you with the closest pick-up time and place to your accommodation.

In any case, in the Frequently Asked Questions of almost all the excursions, the pick-up and drop-off times appears depending on the area where you’re staying.

Reservations are always made online , neither by phone nor in person.

During the booking process we’ll tell you how much to pay, since in most cases, unless it’s a group of more than 4 people, a guarantee has to be paid when booking, and the rest can be paid in cash, at the meeting point.

There are basically two payment methods: 1.- Paypal and 2.- Credit or debit card.

If you want to guarantee a spot, book as far in advance as possible as we can fill all the places for the day you’re interested in at any time. Additionally, if you cancel as far in advance as possible, we will refund you for the amount paid as a guarantee.

Even though you can visit a large part of the monuments and emblematic places within Lanzarote on your own, we recommend excursions with guided tours for various reasons:

  • To avoid the long queues that form when entering some CACTs.
  • An official guide will give you all the information about the island and the places you visit and will answer any questions you may have. That way, you’ll get the most out of the tour.
  • You’ll travel in comfortable buses, always being able to admire the landscape.
  • In the Timanfaya National Park visit, even if you go by yourself, in addition to having to buy the park entrance ticket, you’ll have to pay to take the bus tour along the volcano highway. You can’t do it on your own.
  • We’ll pick you up and drop you off back at your accommodation or close to it.
  • You’ll be able to see more things in less time. The routes are planned to maximize our time and to visit the greatest number of places, while always having more than enough time to see them.

In addition to guided visits to the most impressive places in Lanzarote, we also offer excursions to La Graciosa, boat trips to Isla de Lobos and a day trip to Fuerteventura.

Children can do all the tours, but we have prepared a list of the best tours for families with children in Lanzarote .

Yes, please check the best tours available for cruise passengers here.

Here are the excursions you can do depending on the day of the week.

Day trips and excursions in Lanzarote

Enjoy the best Lanzarote excursions in Lanzarote. Check complete information of each tour with pictures, reviews, maps and details of the route. Book with the best price guaranteed and enjoy some of the most beautiful moments with our day trips.

Lanzarote is like a large theme park full of attractions that are worth visiting through the different organized excursions that we propose. In our tours, you will find the main places to see and visit in Lanzarote so that you make the most of your stay on the island.

For your convenience, all of the tours have pick-up points in the tourist centres of Costa Teguise , Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca , in addition to a pick-up point in the capital, Arrecife .

We have divided the excursions into three main categories: bus tours, boat trips and jeep excursions.

You can do the tours with children , alone, with your partner or with a group of friends.

The bus excursions are the most popular for comfortably getting to know the island’s most emblematic places. The tours take place in modern buses driven by expert drivers. The guides who accompany you are official guides who will illustrate the history, culture and stories of the landmarks throughout the trip.

The variety offered by these tours allows you to visit the most impressive places on the island in just a few days. Because most of our routes combine the different landmarks, we can divide the itineraries into three groups:

In the volcano tours ,we will visit Timanfaya National Park , the island’s great attraction and most-visited place. Most of Lanzarote’s volcanoes are concentrated here. On these tours, you can camel ride , go on a tour along the volcano road and see for yourself, through different experiments, why this park is also known as the Fire Mountains.

In the cave excursions , we will visit two magical places on the island, two volcanic tubes created by the Corona Volcano where art and nature have been combined: Los Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes.

You can also visit other works of Cesar Manrique in this unique island of the Canary Islands: the Jardín de cactus ( Cactus Garden ), el monumento al campesino (Monument to the Farmer), el Mirador del Río ( River Lookout), Lagomar, the house where Manrique lived (which is now the headquarters for the Cesar Manrique Foundation ).

On our bus tours through Lanzarote we will also see places as outstanding as the Green Lagoon, the Salinas de Janubio, Teguise, the Hervideros or La Geria.

Day trips from Lanzarote

We also offer the possibility of doing a day trip from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura in order to explore the most important places to the north of the island.

On the boat trips , you can choose the option that suits you best in terms of the environment, route, type of boat, schedule and location of departure. You can do boat trips to Papagayo Beach , a La Graciosa tour from Lanzarote , or a Lobos island tour to enjoy a spectacular sunset, see dolphins or do an aquatic activity like kayaking or snorkelling.

The Jeep safaris are ideal for getting to know the island and enjoying an adventure at the same time. On these Jeep routes, you can visit places that are difficult for other vehicles to access, such as those on dirt roads or that are very narrow and/or winding. Visiting Playa de Famara, Playa de Papagayo, or Santa Sport or walking inside a volcano can only be done on these Jeep tours.

In short, Lanzarote has many sites to discover and visit, impressive places that we make available to you with our different excursions so that you can enjoy them with the greatest guarantees, comfort and safety.

We only hope that upon finishing any of our tours, you return to your accommodations with the satisfaction of having enjoyed one of the best days of your stay in Lanzarote, full of unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

Much cheaper at home. Don't buy in duty free. More crack(fun) in the old town. Weather was perfect in April. Sea temperature was perfect for a swim in the morning. Great walks on the prominade. • FionaC74 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Cesar Manrique in Lanzarote This was an excellent all-day tour around 5 important landmarks created by the artist. Paul, the tour guide was excellent, switching seamlessly between Spanish and English and always open to answering questions. On the way between sites he explained the history and culture of the island as well as relating with enthusiasm interesting facts about Manrique himself. The only disappointment was the buffet lunch which didn't cater for vegetarians. However we made up for it with delicious apple pie and coffee at the Mirador del Rio. Read more Written 19 April 2024
  • CFNB 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Turned away even with a ticket - don't bother Be prepared to drive all the way here (a long drive if you're staying in the south west if the island) only to be turned away and told to come back another day, with no refund on your ticket. They don't offer timed slots (is it really that difficult to do that?) so youve no way of knowing if the sole small car park will be full. It's a ploy to force you to go with the tour bus excursions (who are never turned away). Don't bother unless you've time to waste. Read more Written 9 April 2024
  • triciasL7457IP 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing sights The tour is fascinating. We went on a coach visiting Timanfaya National Park - complete with geysers and very hot stones. Also we visited a green lake on the coast with fantastic scenery. Passed through Teguise but did not get out of the coach. Had lunch at a restaurant on a fixed price deal but the food was disappointing and I'd advise you to take a packed lunch. It was expensive but worth the visit but go on an organised coach trip and private cars are stuck in long traffic queues. Read more Written 4 April 2024

Our guide Paul's knowledge of his native island was exceptional and he was also very amusing. The visit to Timanfaya was excellent and the scenery spectacular. Huge thanks to our driver who navigated his way around the very narrow roads amongst the lava fields with great care. • dorothyb916 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Complaints ignored with no response. I was holidaying in Lanzarote(Puerto de Carmen) last month and wish to draw your attention to a problem our party of 5 had on one of First Travel excursions. We booked one of the tours(The Grand Tour) on Tuesday 20/02/2024 for 5 people on the main strip in Puerto de Carmen. Pick up point was La Isla Ye El Mar Boutique at around 9.40am The bus arrived around 30 minutes late around 10.10 and we proceeded to pay by card we tried 4 cards debit and credit cards which were not accepted by the machine all these cards had been tried on the holiday several times without any problems. The balance to pay was 260 euros for the party. Because of this we were told that we would pay later. On checking with at least 7 or 8 couples on the bus the same problem had occurred with them thus creating a late bus most couples were forced to pay cash.It was obvious at this point there was a problem with the the card reader of the guide. We continued just out of town the bus stopped and the guide asked myself and one other into an office and another card reader was produced by presumably another guide similar to the one used by the guide. The same thing happened again and both myself and the other gentleman were directed to An ATM outside the building to withdraw the relevant cash. After this the bus proceeded now around probably 45minutes behind schedule. The cost of the ATM to me resulted in a rate of 1.01 euros to the pound. The debit card rate through my card would have been 1.165 euros to the £ this incurred a loss to me around £34.00 When the bus stopped for lunch we were informed that the time would be cut to 40/45 minutes obviously due to earlier problems. We were also informed on arrival that lunch was a set price of 12 euros or nothing This had not been informed by the selling agent who said we could buy to suit without the full buffet . We walked to cafe on the edge of the car park and service was slow food had to be gulped down We did not want the buffet due to dietary requirements of the group. I note this was a problem of the selling agent and not First travel . The next day we went into another selling agent near the port to book another trip we informed him of our troubles he phoned first travel direct giving my mobile number to resolve the problem. No call back was received. We again went to same agent several days again he phoned First Travel to call me back. Again I received no call back. I may add that the lady guide was excellent and the trip was generally good however I have asked for some compensation due to the above. In addition to the above calls I have also emailed first minute travel 3 times without a reply which is not a good advert for the island or First travel excursions. Was at the pickup point 1/2 hour early, but the coach never arrived. Got in touch with the Tour operator (First Minute) who informed us that Excursions Lanzarote had booked 9th May. • brianpX8008EI 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Tour Great, shame about bus operations…… Firstly the tour itself was brilliant, think it was Roland who was our guide and very good he was too, and the driver was second to none considering the roads round the volcano. My only complaint was this, firstly as we were in playa blanca we waited at the designated bus stop for 30 minutes, we were 10 mins early. Was told the bus was late due to pick up from port as ferry was late. Considering we stayed not five minutes from the port we could see the comings and goings of ferries as they arrive and the ferry was there. Secondly travelled to a bus terminal telling us we were to go on different coach for our tour, because of guests from other parts of the island. Then we were only let on the coach due to the areas that were to be dropped off first, so as being in Playa Blanca we ended up at the back of the coach. Now what makes it even worse when we travelled back to resort, we ended up changing to a smaller one after we pulled in to Playa del Carmen. Playa Blanca guests got the rough end of the stick that day. Would recommend to tour operator that people from their respective area, being Playa Blanca or Playa del Carmen etc have their own coach if it’s for the day tour. Too much messing around in my opinion that day. Would I recommend Tour yes, coach operation a no. Read more Written 6 March 2024
  • Anna7789 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A brilliant day out We really enjoyed our tour and had a great day out exploring the sights of Lanzarote, the highlight of the day being the lunar drive through the volcanoes!! An absolutely amazing experience!! Our guide was very knowledgable and very strict with time keeping which ensured that we made the best use of our time and didn’t miss anything. We would have liked a bit longer at the green lake though, as we’d have liked to go down onto the black sand beach. The wine tasting was fun and a welcome rest stop on the way up North, if a bit rushed! We took our own lunch and enjoyed sitting out the sunny terrace, but my daughter did do the camel ride and really enjoyed it. We found the first part of the day where everyone was picked up overly long, although we were prepared for it and had been told what to expect upon booking. It just got really tedious. For us the bus felt too crowded and squashed at full occupancy, but it was worth a bit of discomfort to see so much in one day! Read more Written 28 February 2024

  • Cathy W 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Island view Great way to see the 'hot spots' across the island! Took the opportunity to sit back and relax and enjoy the view. Roland provided ample information about the history of the island and the areas we visited. Buffet food was an extra 12 euro, but good choices were available and tasty enough as buffets go. I was a little disappointed in the wine tasting element of the tour as it was little more than a mouthful and no discussion on what it was or where it was from. All in all, it was a good way to see the island and well done to our driver who took us around some very hairy bends! Read more Written 7 February 2024
  • H4603PNerino 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Awful scam !! Do NOT book this service as an airport transfer! First, they changed the time that the vehicle would pick us up from our accommodation and take us to the airport from 5am to 8am- which would be after our flight, three days before! They then confirmed a transfer for 5am, but by 6.30 it did not arrive and we had to pay £50 for a taxi - cheaper than the service (despite one of its advertising claims that it is cheaper than a taxi service)! We had prepaid £120 in cash. Despite my numerous emails in the 7 months since the scam occurred, I have had NO communication and no reimbursement. Beware as the company is clearly a scam which pockets money unethically! Read more Written 4 February 2024

• rosiem17 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Book this one! Fantastic tour. Paul, the local guide was really knowledgeable about everything to do with Lanzarote. The Cesar Manrique tour was amazing- loved every stop. This was a much better tour than one we did earlier with LCT tours. The cactus garden and the view from Mirador del Rio are amazing Read more Written March 16, 2024
  • Warbyr 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles No show. Booked Grand Tour with Excursions Lanzarote (Travelon World) for today, 9th March. This date was on the confirmation booking and e-ticket. Was at the pickup point 1/2 hour early, but the coach never arrived. Got in touch with the Tour operator (First Minute) who informed us that Excursions Lanzarote had booked 9th May. Tried to call Travelon World (website says 7 days a week - actually only Monday to Friday). Tried the chat (painfully slow). Absolute rubbish customer service. Book with them at your peril. Read more Written March 6, 2024
Read more Written February 28, 2024

Read more Written February 7, 2024
Read more Written February 4, 2024
