15 Best Things to Do in Batam (Indonesia)

Batam is just across the water from Singapore, so if you are looking for a weekend break to Indonesia then this is a great place to come. From Singapore it is a 40 minute ride to Batam on a speed boat and once you are there you can enjoy a huge range of activities far more cheaply than in many other parts of Southeast Asia.

The island is famous as a place where people come to relax and get away from it all and as such it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia. You won’t find a huge array of ‘attractions’ like historical sites as such, but you will find a number of resorts, spas, restaurants and cafes, and the nightlife here is lively with a good range of choices if you are looking for some entertainment in the evenings.

Another reason why people flock to Batam is for the diving or snorkeling opportunities as the waters here are incredibly clear and visibility is excellent if you want to explore the underwater kingdoms in this part of Indonesia.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Batam :

1. Enjoy the water sports

Batam Cable Ski Park

One of the signature attractions in Batam is the water sports as it is located right next to the water.

In other places like Singapore the coast of water skiing or wakeboarding can really add up but in Batam you can enjoy these for a fraction of the price and one of the best places to do this is at the Batam Cable Ski Park.

Just some of the activities on offer here include canoeing, jet skiing, or even snorkeling or you can check out other famous resorts like the Batam View Beach Resort.

2. Visit Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

This temple is one of the more serene ways to enjoy Batam and is the place to come if you want to find some inner peace.

Devotees here usually burn incense for good luck and you can enjoy the colorful and elegant Buddha statues here as well as the carvings of twelve zodiac signs which lie opposite the temple.

One of the best things about the temple is that there is also a cafe here and you buy a range of delicious vegetarian food including buns and snacks in the shape of cute animals.

3. Take a trip to Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island

There are a number of islands around central Batam Island that are perfect for day trips and one of these is the stunning Penyengat Island.

It is not one of the largest islands in the area and you can walk around it in around two hours which means that if you get here early you can go for a walk before spending the afternoon sunbathing and then catch the spectacular sunset.

One point of interest on the island is the local mosque called Masjid Kuning (Yellow Mosque) and legend has it that eggshells were used in its construction to make the walls stronger.

The island is also a great place if you want to get a glimpse of how locals live in the less touristy parts of Batam.

4. Dine on seafood

Batam Seafood

Batam is also known for its seafood which again is far cheaper than Singapore or other parts of Southeast Asia.

Some of the top picks for seafood in the city include the Sei Enam Seafood Restaurant as well as the Rezeki Seafood Restaurant and Harbour Bay Seafood.

If you are looking for signature dishes then try the chili crab which is famous in the region as well as black pepper crab and snacks like crunchy calamari.

Other underwater delights about here such as juicy prawns and even dine on freshly caught lobster which is usually simply grilled and served with white rice.

5. Travel along the northern coast

Duriankang Reservoir

Many people come to Batam and only check out the main tourist areas or take a boat to some of the neighboring islands.

If you want to explore a little further however then consider a trip along the northern coastline.

One of the best ways to do this is to hire a motorbike or a bicycle and drive past gorgeous lush jungles with sweeping vistas over the water on the other side of the trail.

The trail will take you along the Duriankang Reservoir and then along the pretty Nongsa Coast and if you choose to ride a bike then you can expect around a 30 kilometer ride from Nongsa Village to the end of the line.

6. Sunbathe on Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach is one of the best places to come if you are in Batam and looking for some sand.

The beach has a relaxed atmosphere and is less crowded than some other places on the island.

It is also close to a range of amenities and you will find an array of eateries lining the beach that are a great spot if you fancy a spot of dinner or a drink while watching the sunset.

There are also some spas nearby and you can go for a paddle or a swim.

7. Watch the sunset at Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in Batam and people flock here in the late afternoon for the photo opportunities.

The bridge actually links main Batam Island with adjacent Galang Island and the bridge is a marvel of engineering as it majestically spans the water between these two islands.

If possible try to go around sunset for the best vistas across the water.

8. Have a massage

Massage

One of the reasons that people come to Batam is for rest and relaxation and as a result there are a wealth of spas here where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a range of soothing treatments.

One of the most famous places to get a treatment is the Isabella Massage House although there are a huge range to choose from scattered across the city which will mean that wherever you go you will leave rejuvenated and relaxed.

9. Go scuba diving

Scuba Diving

If you are a diving newbie and want to get certified then Batam Island is the perfect spot to get your PADI certificate cheaply.

Some of the best places to dive here are located offshore from the main Batam Island and include Abang Island, Hantu Island, Labun Island, and Petong Island.

From Batam you can sign up for a course and will be taken out to the neighboring islands in a boat and the visibility here is amazingly clear so you will be able to take in a range of underwater creatures and this is a top spot if you like marine photography.

If you are already an experienced diver then you will also find a lot to enjoy here thanks to the huge selection of aquatic life in these waters such as sharks, rays, and turtles.

10. Play a round of golf

Batam Hills Golf Resort

Batam is a golfer’s paradise and you can enjoy not one but seven different ranges in and around the area.

These include the Batam Hills Golf Resort and the Palm Springs Golf and Beach Resort or you can go to the Padang Golf Sukajadi which is the most famous of all the courses here.

As well as enjoying a game of golf all the courses have bars and eateries attached so you can also get a bite to eat or enjoy a sundowner as you look over the idyllic rambling dunes.

11. Take a trip to Bintan Island

Bintan Island

Bintan Island lies close to Batam and is known for being a luxury retreat with a wealth of delightful high end resorts to choose from.

If you are not on a budget then you can think about staying overnight or you can just take a day trip to Bintan and enjoy the pristine white sands and the azure waters.

Bintan is slightly less busy than Batam and most people come here to chill out at one of the resident resorts on the island, so if you are looking to get away from the crowds then this is a good choice.

12. Check out the stilt houses in Tanjung Uma

Tanjung Uma

Many parts of Batam are incredibly modern but if you go out to the old villages then there are a wealth of historical relics to enjoy.

These include the stilt houses which are built over the water and this is an amazing sight if you have never seen traditional architecture like this before.

One of the best places to see these old fashioned stilt houses is in the sleepy fishing village of Tanjung Uma so if you are interested in local architecture and culture then this is not to be missed and shows a completely different side of this island.

13. Have fun at Ocarina Park

Ocarina Park Batam

Ocarina Park is a great place to come with all the family and is a large entertainment complex which also includes the Ocarina Waterpark.

The park ahs a range of signature features including a large Ferris wheel and you will find a range of rides for children of all ages as well as adults.

There is also a 3D movie theater inside the park and you will also find a number of food courts where you can get a bite to eat.

Certainly if you are looking for a place with a range of attractions all in one place then this is a great choice.

14. Enjoy the nightlife

Batam Nightlife

Batam is well known for having cheap alcohol particularly compared to neighboring Singapore.

It is also one of the liveliest parts of Indonesia if you are looking for an exciting nightlife scene.

The main area for bars and clubs is known as the Nagoya Entertainment District or just ‘NED’ and you can easily spend a night on the town here enjoying the local Indonesian beer Bintang or having a cocktail.

Venues range from low-key lounges where you can get a drink before dinner to larger nightclubs where you can dance the night away into the wee small hours.

15. Go shopping at Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall

Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall

Batam is an island but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a wealth of shopping malls to visit and actually shopping is the number one pastime for many visitors here.

The Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall has the claim to fame of being the biggest mall in the city and you will find a full range of items here such as branded clothes and accessories.

Other malls include Mega Mall Batam Center and BCS Mall.

Lots of malls also sell a wealth of typical handicrafts such as wood carvings and textiles so if you are looking to pick up some gifts or souvenirs then you can do all your shopping under one roof.

Top 8 Travel Tips for your Batam Trip Preparation

Whether you are going for the first time or you’re a regular, do read through these 8 travel tips on how you should prepare for your Batam trip.

You are guaranteed to save significantly in terms of your preparation and travelling time, as well as money.

A weekend holiday to Batam might cost significantly less than going to other destinations such as Phuket, Langkawi, Bali, or even Bintan. Nevertheless, a poorly-prepared Batam trip might cost you unnecessary waste of time and mental energy.

As a result, you might end up with a weekend holiday that leaves you more exhausted than a long day with overtime at work.

While these 8 travel tips are not exhaustive, they are some the most commonly asked advices by our clients. So here we go:

1. Book the right stay for the right reason

The first and most important of our travel tips: book the right accommodation for the right reason.

For a short Batam trip over the weekend, time is of essence.

So if you’re planning to enjoy the beach, please do not book a  Batam city hotel . Spending 30-45 minutes on the way to the beach and spending the same amount of time returning to the city is not an economical use of time. Similarly, avoid booking a  Batam beach resort  and missing out on its facilities because of the time wasted on the road.

Next, let’s say you intend to empty your pockets to shop in the main Nagoya or Baloi district. Try not to book a hotel that’s NOT within walking distance to your shopping target. Money and time wasted on transportation (taxi) can be better utilized for your shopping instead.

batam trip travel tips of choosing the right stay

2.    Get the right transportation through the right channel

Having travelled to Batam countless times over the years, this is one of our most basic, yet crucial travel tips:

Research and plan your choice of ferry operator, ferry timing, and ferry terminal.

The last thing you’d want for your brief Batam trip is to get poor ferry timing, and end up in a ferry terminal that’s furthest from your Batam hotel or resort. You will be wasting precious time and money on the road and taxi.

Of course if you want convenience and savings, you can book our Batam hotel or resort packages. For a first-timer to Batam, you can consider the comprehensive  batam hotel + ferry + tour package  that includes accommodation, breakfast, ferry tickets, Batam city tour with seafood lunch, and optional body massage. Otherwise, you can opt for the basic  batam hotel + ferry package , which comes with accommodation, breakfast, ferry tickets, and Batam land transfers.

Otherwise, you could book directly to the individual ferry operator’s website, or through other third-party aggregators’ sites.

3.    Set your objectives and plan your actions

To be very productive and efficient with your time on your Batam trip, you have to be crystal clear on your purpose.

At the same time, plan your schedule, route, and movement to support your purpose. This is probably one of the most important travel tips I’ve learned over the years.

Let’s say your main purpose is to max out your credit cards and ‘shop till you drop’. First, determine the target product(s) and prioritize them in the right order; 1. Fashion, 2. Snacks, 3. Souvenirs, 4. Gadgets, 5. Books, etc. Settle the ‘must gets’ before straying to the ‘nice to gets’; starting from 1 and moving down to 5.  So if you plan to shop for a year’s worth of clothing, make sure you fill up your 10 luggages first before going for the snacks, souvenirs, gadgets, books, and other items.

Try not to commit the number 1 sin of all sins: attempting to do too many things, visiting too many places, and going for too many experiences in your short Batam trip. You can doesn’t mean you should.

4.    Prepare adequately and appropriately

Next on our travel tips is to prepare your travel items and activities appropriately & adequately.

Before deciding on the activities for your Batam trip, do check the weather forecast first. This  weather site  does a forecast of up to 14 days from the current date of checking. It’s also very detailed down to hourly projection of temperature, wind speed, humidity, rainfall, and more.

Depending on the forecast and choice of activities, prepare your attire and travel items accordingly. For instance, if you’re planning for a day doing water sports, be sure to bring a few more extra clothing, plastic bags for wet clothes, sunblock, sunglasses, etc. Similarly, if you’re planning to shop a lot, bring extra foldable travel bags and of course, cash.

Whenever possible, book your activities in advance.

Thinking of going for a spa? Identify your preferred Batam spa centre and book your slot in advance. Trying to surprise your loved one for an anniversary or a birthday celebration? Contact your desired Batam restaurant and make a reservation for romantic candlelight dinner.

5.    Draft a packing checklist and pack early

Assuming you haven’t got one, do a packing checklist for your upcoming Batam trip. You can re-use and customize it for your future overseas trips ( Get our packing checklist here ). Such a checklist would not only save you time for packing but to also ensure that you have everything you’d need for the trip. In addition, it will be extremely useful when you are packing your bag at the end of your trip (during checkout). This is arguably one of the best travel tips a friend had ever given me.

While preparing your checklist, consider categorizing it into 3 different categories:

  • Die die must bring: Passport, Photo ID (Driving License, Identity Card), some local currency (Indonesian Rupiah), extra cash, credit cards, booking details (hotel vouchers, ferry tickets)
  • Don’t bring might die: mobile phone, headphone, magazine / book, charger, adapter, camera memory card, etc.
  • Won’t die but will be shy: clothes, towels, toiletries, make up, tissue, etc.
Whatever it is, make sure to keep it light keep it simple. Bring what you will definitely use, not what you think you might use.

Lastly, pack at least 3 days before your trip. You won’t want to frantically get the things you need on the night before your trip or start worrying over missing items.

6.    Ensure All Bookings are Confirmed & All Documents are Ready

A week or a few days prior to your departure, ensure that all bookings are confirmed: accommodation, ferry, transportation, tours, activities, etc. This is crucial especially if there were some amendments or hiccups in your initial booking process; for instance, wrong spelling of name, upgrade of room type, change of ferry timing, etc.

Most importantly, ensure that you have a valid travel document; a passport with minimum validity of 6 months (expires in more than 6 months from the last date of travel).

This is one of those travel tips that are often overlooked. If you do not fulfil this criterion, the officer at the immigration checkpoint has the right to reject your entry into Batam.

You’d also need to check if your nationality needs a visa to travel to the particular country; in this case Indonesia. If you do, then you’d need to apply for it in advance at the Indonesian Consulate / Embassy in your country of residence.

Regardless of how you make your travel booking, passport validity and visa application are the sole responsibility of the traveller.

7.    Contingency & Emergency

Regardless of our background, travel purpose, or destination, we must always take precautions and anticipate unforeseen circumstances while we travel.

Guarding against unwanted scenarios, the very first thing we need to get is a travel insurance. On our travel, many things are not within our control and anything can happen.

For this reason, having a travel insurance would give us that additional peace of mind.

The second travel contingency is to prepare some local currency of the country you’re visiting before your departure. We wouldn’t know what we might encounter the moment we touch down in a foreign country.

Thirdly, try to make at least two extra set of copies of your travel documents and bookings; passport, photo ID, reservations, etc. They would really come in handy in the event that you lose your belongings.

Lastly, always inform your family and friends in advance of your trip schedule and details. You’d never know when and what they might need to contact you for and vice versa, especially in times of emergency.

While these may seem like common sense rather than travel tips, you would be surprised that many would overlook these points at the height of last-minute packing and excitement.

8.    Sleep early, arrive early, and be ready!

What good is a short weekend trip if you don’t have a good night’s rest and enough energy to enjoy it? You don’t want to be tired and spend your first day like a zombie, which is essentially 50-75% of your time there if you’re staying for just 2 days and 1 night.

So sleep early, get all the energy you’ll need, and use it wisely for your brief Batam trip!

This is one of those underestimated travel tips that would actually set the tone for the rest of our trip.

Also, it pays to arrive early at the ferry terminal and be ready for your trip. You wouldn’t want to get stuck in an unexpected traffic, and get all anxious before your holiday even starts or worse, miss your ferry.

Lastly, leave your stress and worries at home. Have a great Batam trip!

Thank you for writing this. Good reminders! Some things we know but sometimes last minute we panic and we forget them. Will start writing things down for future trips 🙂

You’re welcome! 🙂

Point number 7 needs to be emphasis. I would recommend people to only use Indonesian Rupiah to pay for services, do not use USD or SGD to pay even though some shops are more than happy to accept them.

Useful tips can use for other tips not just batam. Good job, value add.

The Best Things to do in Batam

Best Things to do in Batam : Batam is still growing with its travel industry. Tourism hotspots like Bali and Singapore are well-heard of while Batam is still offbeat – thus making for cheaper travel fares.

Batam Riau, similar to Bintan (another island) , an Indonesian island(s), is 20 km or a ferry ride away from Singapore and is well-known for resorts, beaches, massages, and finger-licking authentic delicacies.

Apart from vacations, some history is prevalent like the Vietnamese camp on Galang Island, and religious spots like the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple. Honestly, the island is so small that it takes 3 to 4 days to get around and experience Batam.

This list of the best things to do in Batam picks only the authentic spots to visit here. I tried keeping the list small and focused.

batam fast ferry

Table of Contents

Ways to get to Batam Riau

Flight and ferries are the only ways to get to Batam – and flight options are limited if it isn’t a domestic flight. While the Hang Nadim International Airport has flights coming in from many parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta, the only international flights available are from Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

Ferry to Batam : As for ferries, I’d say this is the best and cheapest way to Batam. From Singapore , you can get to Batam either from the HarborFront ferry terminal or Tanah Merah. There is a handful of options among ferries with some popular ones being SindoFerry, BatamFast, WaveMaster, and Majestic.

Choose your ferry depending on your required time slot and where you wish to enter Batam. The five main ferry terminals in Batam are Batam Center, Marina Waterfront, Harbor Bay, Sekupang, and Nongsapura.

It’s great to get to the terminal nearest to your booked resort, but if you’ve nothing planned yet, I’d suggest the Batam Center terminal.

Best Things to Do in Batam

There are plenty of exotic things to do in Batam from watersports to late nightclubs. Yet, there are more soothing options such as visiting the Barelang Bridge or having a local snorkeling experience at Abang Island. Considering it all, here’s my list of the best things to do in Batam.

  • Visit the Barelang Bridge
  • Snorkel at Abang Island
  • Eat local delicacies
  • Don’t miss the Spa!
  • Go for a morning dip at these beaches
  • Tour the Vietnam Camp
  • Relax at beach spots (Turi or Kiki Resorts)
  • Check out Batam’s local breweries!
  • Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist temple
  • Shop at a variety of malls
  • Jungle walk at Mata Kucing (optional)
  • Make a trip to Bintan (optional)

1. Visit Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge is an hour’s drive from Batam Centre and makes up for Batam’s most prominent landmark. There are 6 Barelang bridges –  the first one is the main and most popular Barelang Bridge. However, the specific name for this one is Tengku Fisabilillah Bridge .

barelang bridge batam guide

The bridge itself is iconic with its cables, but the view from up there is even more scenic. The cables in the backdrop make up for some Instagrammable shots.

Right after the bridge are a series of street stalls that serve grilled corn and coconut water and oh, don’t miss this out! They prepare some amazing flavored grilled corn with hot sauces.

While these stalls are open throughout the day, it’s best to visit in the evenings for the local touch.

2. Snorkel at Abang Island

Snorkeling has to be on the list of things to do in Batam ! With the snorkeling spot in Abang Island being near a local village on the waters here, the only connectivity is boats – or Pompong Bot.

With such an off-grid spot in the Galang District, local sites offer itinerary packages charged per person where they pick you up from Batam center, take you to Abang Island, provide meals, and then also send you back.

They take you around the white sands of Abang Island and Petong Island for snorkeling spots. Being in a remote area, only a few people visit it.

Apart from snorkeling, it also gives a beautiful experience staying with the locals. Read about my Abang Island visit here .

3. Have local delicacies

Indonesian food in Batam is a must-try! The blast of flavors in any local dish is worthy. I recommend trying whichever dish you get your hands on! Be it the Ayam Rendang, Sate Ayam, Ayam Bakar, Bakso, and all the Nasi and Mie Gorengs.

Oh, and of course the authentic Nasi Padang (I recommend Sederhana). Most Indonesian cuisines are made up of rice, meat, fresh herbs, and spices.

Apart from the Padang, I urge you to try fresh seafood as well. Here’s my full list of food recommendations in Batam !

love seafood batam center

Have Seafood by the shores . When you see a restaurant with wooden planks for floors and lingering over the water, you’re bound to be close to seafood! Authentic restaurants like Golden Prawn 933 in Bengkong let you choose your crab, shrimp, and other fish straight from the aquarium before they cook it for you.

With so many people visiting Batam just for seafood, there are tons of places to eat from. The prices are pretty reasonable and always fresh. Some local spots known for seafood here are:

  • Golden Prawns
  • Cita Rasa Seafood
  • Love Seafood Piayu
  • Barelang Seafood (right after the first bridge)
  • And Kopak Jaya Kelong Seafood.

4. Don’t Miss the Spa!

The spa is expensive . But not in Batam! A lot of visitors settle down at one of these massage and spa salons to relax here. After all, it’s Indonesia – you can’t miss an exotic massage on a Sunday afternoon.

When at Nagoya Shopping Center, you’ll see a bunch of these spas lined up around the complex. These are so popular that some trip packages from Singapore include the specific spots on their itinerary!

And the prices are pretty affordable here – it costs anywhere between SGD 20 – 40 per hour depending on the treatment spot and massage type while it can cost triple the amount in Singapore.

Some well-known spa spots here are ESKA Group Aesthetic, Sakura SPA, and IndoThai. Though there are various kinds, with rising popularity it gets hard to get a slot on the crowded weekends. More spas are now available to book online.

I found that Klook.com offers a range of spa and massage centers at reasonable prices. Here are some of my handpicked spas in Batam Riau. Pick your deal today!

5. Take a Morning Dip in the Beach

Things to do in bintan

Not many do this, but I have and it’s fantastic. Take an early dip in the beaches of Batam. You see, Batam lies in the backwaters , and the currents aren’t that strong.

The perks of a morning dip are the calm nature without the evening crowd and the mildly cool early waters.

The offbeat Mirota Beach on Rempang Island, an hour’s drive away over the Barelang bridge from Batam Center, is the cleanest beach I’ve come across. The soothing waters and the long drive itself make for a sweet morning.

It’s even better when you stay by the beachside resorts like Kiki Beach, Nongsa Point and Harris Resorts. But if not, some other recognized beaches here are Nuvasa Bay , Pantai Melayu, and Pantai Vio Vio. The entry rates are super cheap as well.

6. Tour the Vietnam Camp

vietnam camp cars

Leaping back in time, Vietnam refugees fled on boats during the civil war of 1975 between Vietnam , Laos, and Cambodia. And voila, they landed on various islands of Indonesia! Some refugees died on the ships, and others survived.

With Galang Island in Batam being one of the islands they came to, the UN called to make part of Galang Island home for the refugees of Vietnam – Kampung Vietnam . Today, it stands as a historical tourist spot in Batam where you can drive around, visit the museum, and see the vehicles, hospitals, and buildings that were used back then by the refugees.

7. Relax at beach stays like Turi or Kiki Resorts

I suggest staying by the beach even though it’s a bit expensive. This makes a big part of the trip, you can’t miss these in Indonesia!

In Batam, there are a handful of resorts and hotels both beachside and in the city. Some notable ones are Turi Beach, Nongsa Point, and Harris Resorts.

batam beaches

To recommend – Nongsa Point, Turi Beach, Harris Resorts, and KTM Resort are some of the best resorts in Batam that have had great reputations for over a decade now.

I handpicked these hotel deals of these spots on Klook.com. It’s hard to get a room on the weekends so grab your stay below!

Kiki Beach Resort is a new addition to the trending resorts in Batam.

Here they take you by boat from Citi Rasa port on Rempang Island to their private beach on Galang Island. What makes it sweet is that there’s no road connectivity and only limited stays, thus making it a sweet getaway. Many resorts are inclusive of some watersports like Kayaking.

8. Check out Local Breweries!

Bar-and-restaurant spots in Batam are still not that prevalent but there are plenty of spots to check out. The reason why I had to include this is because of one lowkey spot I caught hold of :)

FreshBeer Batam, a restaurant in a local alley complex in Batam Center brews its beer and is quite well-heard of by the locals. They also serve exotic cuisines of farmed crocodiles and snakes. If you’re into the sort, this spot is a must-try.

Most restobars in Batam are fairly new. To go bar-hopping, get Nagoya’s Harbor Bay to find a bunch of expensive bars lined up with live music venues. Some notable restaurants are BlueFire Restaurant, Port House Resto & Bar, and HW Dragon Bar.

Another bound hotspot is Arch Alley another branch of FreshBeer that now is a full-fledged restaurant with a rich classy ambiance and amazing beer ranges.

9. Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist temple

It’s a long name but when you mention ‘Buddhist temple’, people will know it’s this one. Well, either this or Tua Pek Kong temple (another Buddhist temple). The temple, as the name suggests, tributes to Maitreya Bodhisattva who’s said to be the future Buddha.

Inside you’ll find numerous forms of Maitreya – from his baby form to holding the Chinese zodiac to large bodies of the laughing Buddha.

Also, don’t forget to check out the shops and the vegetarian cafeteria at the back! They serve amazing buffet-style delicacies. I found this cool blog with a walkthrough of the temple.

maha vihara duta maitreya, batam buddhist temple

10. Shop at a variety of malls

You and I both know malls – gigantic places with shops, food, kids’ amusement centers, and whatnot. Shouldn’t be a backpacker’s place. But if you’ve got an extra day off, here are some malls to visit: Mega Mall by HarborFront, Nagoya Hill, Batam One, BCS (Batam City Square), and Mega Mall.

first travel batam

11. Jungle-walk at Mata Kucing (Optional)

If you’ve got extra time, then this can be another small day trip. But it’s purely optional and up to your interests – It’s not a full-fledged trek or hike, but more of a nature walk.

Located in Batu Aji, it also has a mini zoo with wild cats, orangutans, large birds like cranes and eagles, crocs, and even snakes! They have a large pond where you’ll find some large fish species like a meter-long gold arowana.

Mata refers to ‘eye’ and kucing means ‘cat’. Yep, the spot’s name is Cat Eyes. This isn’t very popular but if you’ve got time, visit it for a change. I remember going on 1-day cross-country trips through the jungles across rope bridges and large wooden logs.

12. Take a Trip to Bintan (also optional)

Bintan is also part of the Riau Provinces and is another tourism hotspot. Though it isn’t a city like Batam, there are more offbeat beaches and authentic experiences to check out in Bintan.

Blue lake bintan, bintan blue lagoon, blue lake and desert

Some local things to check out here are the Blue Lagoon, FireFly River Ride, and Sengarang Water Village. The place also boasts many historical and religious sites. From Batam, take a tiny but adventurous local speedboat ferry from Punggur Ferry Terminal.

Again, this is optional as it is a whole additional trip of 2-3 days after Batam. You can perhaps keep it for the next time as well :)

Those are all the best things to do in Batam . As most tourists are usually Singaporean residents or come through the place, if you feel the need to ease off from the expense, then Batam Riau is the perfect spot to visit and stretch your legs without any worries.

Thank you, and have a safe journey! :)

Batam travel guide

Batam tourism | batam guide, you're going to love batam.

Batam has experienced dizzying growth in recent years, becoming one of Southeast Asia's largest resorts. With its beaches, casinos, bars, and activities, Batam is a great Indonesian destination.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Batam

1. fantastic nightlife.

Batam attracts thousands of weekend visitors from Malaysia and Singapore (which are both 20 miles away). Bars like Brewsky & Co and Socialites Crib ensure that it's a buzzing party town.

2. Discount Shopping Opportunities

Batam is a Special Economic Zone, which means low tariffs and shopping bargains. Nagoya Hill Mall offers some of the cheapest designer clothing on the planet.

3. Plenty of Activities for Everyone

Visitors can pick from a plethora of activities, from go-karting and water-skiing to water parks and fishing.

4. The Beautiful Beaches of Barelang

Just south of Batam itself lies Barelang, an island with hundreds of beaches and miles of cycling paths. If you want tropical seclusion, you can find it here.

5. Excellent Dive Sites

See the majestic corals and wrecks around Batam at sites like the Lingga Archipelago, where sunken Japanese "Zero" planes have been uncovered.

What to do in Batam

1. veggie delights and bad-ass buddhas.

Batam may be a pleasure island, but it has a spiritual side too, as this engaging Buddhist temple complex demonstrates. One of the largest Buddhist temples in all of Indonesia, the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple occupies 4.5 hectares of the city center. Its pride and joy is definitely the impressive five meter tall Maitreya Buddha, but look out for the other eight Maitreya statues spread out across the courtyard. And you can't miss the aroma of the excellent vegetarian canteen, which serves up healthy meals to all who visit.

2. A Tiny Jewel With Oversized Importance

Penyengat Island lies just off Pulau Bintan island and is a little gem. It may only be around 1.5 square miles in extent, but it crams a lot into that small area. On one hand, there's the tomb of Raja Ali Haji, one of the intellectual fathers of the Indonesian nation, and there's the Yellow Mosque, whose walls are fortified with egg shells. But the main attraction is the setting. By all means sunbathe throughout the day, but be there for some of the most gorgeous sunsets anywhere on earth.

3. Inflatable Adventures And Total Relaxation

Quite possibly the most appealing beach on an island full of appealing beaches, Nongsa beach can be found on the northeastern tip of Batam Island. It's lined with hotels, as you might expect, but that doesn't mean it's jam-packed and unpleasant. In fact, Nongsa has managed to retain its pure white sands remarkably well, along with a laid-back vibe. There are plenty of nearby attractions as well, including Aqua Adventure Track, at the northern end of the beach, where massive inflatable structures provide a wild play environment for all ages. You can enjoy a raucous or peaceful day out - that's the beauty of Nongsa.

4. A Powerful Monument To War's Victims

In the 1970s, Batam became a transit point for refugees fleeing the aftermath of the Vietnam war. Galang was the center of the island's refugee community, housing 250,000 people in total and sprawling over 80 hectares. The Vietnamese boat people have come and gone, but the camp still remains, and touring it is a fascinating experience. If you can tolerate the monkeys that roam around the complex, you'll find gently crumbling houses built by refugees, as well as monuments to fallen heroes and a beautiful church, which helped keep spirits high in the face of adversity.

5. Bringing Batam Together In Style

It's no exaggeration to say that Barelang Bridge has transformed Batam completely. Completed in 1997, it connects the islands of Batam, Rempang, and Galang (hence "Ba-re-lang") and actually consists of a chain of six bridges. However, the star of the show is the stunning Tengku Fisabilillah bridge, a cable-stayed creation which elegantly connects Tonton island with Batam. Evening is the time to wander over, as the bridge makes a great complement to the sinking southeast Asian sun.

Where to Eat in Batam

For great Singaporean food, head to Golden Prawn, try the Malaysian noodles at Ayam Penyet Ria, or enjoy meat-free curries at Rumah Makan Vegetarian. Prices should be around Rp45,000.

When to visit Batam

The best time to visit is probably the "dry" season between February and September. At other times, expect torrential downpours at any moment.

7 Exciting Things to Do in Batam Other Than Eating and Shopping

first travel batam

If deer feeding and wakeboarding sound like fun things to do, this guide will make you see Batam in a different light!

First published: 11 May 2023

first travel batam

I’ve always had the impression that Singaporeans visit Batam to eat and shop (based on my relatives and friends). But beyond that, I’m completely clueless about what to do there.

Since I’ve never been there, I thought: Why not check out the island with a bunch of friends?

Group of friends at Batam Centre Ferry Terminal - Things to do in Batam

To my surprise, there are so many fun things to do in Batam that don’t involve eating or shopping — such as hiking, wakeboarding, and exploring an abandoned theme park!

So whether it’s your first or nth time, here are eight things you can do to make your next getaway to Batam a little different 👇

1) Explore the ‘Abandoned’ Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam

Overview of Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam - Things to Do in Batam

At Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam , they seem to take the meaning of an amusement park literally. I mean, I was very amused (pun totally intended) to find an ‘abandoned’ amusement park when we arrived!

Girl at Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam - Things to Do in Batam

Of course, this isn’t a real abandoned theme park — we just happened to drop by on a day when rides weren’t operating. But things not going to plan is part and parcel of our travels at The Travel Intern — so, we made the most of having the entire amusement park to ourselves!

Girl chilling at Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam - Things to Do in Batam

Sit on unmanned rides, take Instagrammable photos and chill by the coastline — you name it all. All you gotta do is pay an entrance fee of Rp25,000/pax (yes, even if rides aren’t working :’D).

But if you’re there for the rides, we heard from a local that it only operates on some weekends and on special holidays in Batam. So do check the official Instagram page for updates!

Entrance fee: Rp25,000/adult (~S$2) Opening hours: 8AM – 10PM (Mon – Fri), 8AM – 11PM (Sat), 6AM – 10PM (Sun) How to get there: 12min Gojek ride from Batam Centre Point International Ferry Terminal ( Google Maps )

2) Grab a Drink at Altitude Rooftop Bar & Lounge

Friends having a drink at Altitude Bar - Things to do in Batam

Located on the highest floor of Batam Marriot Hotel Harbour Bay , Altitude is an open-air, cosy rooftop bar — the ideal place to spend the evening with friends over some drinks.

For those who like some music, there’s a DJ near the sheltered Bartender’s corner. But if you prefer a quieter spot like us, we found a secluded open-air seating area on the other end of the bar.

Bartender's table at Altitude Bar - Things to do in Batam

We recommend getting the Bartender’s Signature (Rp138,000/drink) — ours was an Apple Cider Cocktail and a Rum Cocktail. Both were really refreshing but what impressed us the most was the aesthetic presentation ✨.

Opening hours: 5PM – 11PM (Sun – Thu), 5PM – 12AM (Fri – Sat) How to get there: 10min walk from Habour Bay Ferry Terminal ( Google Maps )

3) Play Your Hearts Out at Belalang Adventure

Belalang Adventure - Things to do in Batam

Belalang Adventure offers some of the most exciting things to do in Batam, including flying fox, ATV ride, paintball wargames, archery and more!

Girl playing archery at Belalang Adventure - Things to do in Batam

We wanted to try the flying fox (Rp60,000/pax) but it was closed for routine maintenance when we were there. So, we challenged each other to a game of archery (Rp60,000/pax for 15 arrows) and paintball shooting (Rp100,000/pax for 30 bullets) instead.

*Pro-tip: Bring earplugs if you’re going for paintball shooting. The sounds produced by the gun could be pretty loud for some.

first travel batam

FYI, kid-friendly arrows are also available, making archery a great option for families with young kids. For friend groups of up to six, go for the three vs. three paintball war game — but be warned, it’s the perfect recipe to make or break friendships!

*Pro-tip: Contact Belalang Adventure via WhatsApp at +62 812-7022-8879 before heading down — to avoid missing out on activities as we did.

Cost: From Rp60,000 (~S$5) Opening hours: 9AM – 5PM How to get there: 4min walk from Miniature House Indonesia ( Google Maps )

4) Unwind at Absolute Spa

Break away from the stresses of daily life and pamper yourself with a trip to Absolute Spa . It’s only a 4-minute drive from Grand Batam Mall and has various massage options ranging from aromatherapy to traditional, foot, and more.

Girl getting a foot bath at Absolute Spa - Things to do in Batam

Disclaimer: It was my first time getting a spa (shocking I know), so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But go big or go home right?

So I went straight for the comprehensive Full Glow Spa Package — a luxurious 2-hour experience which includes sauna access, a milk bath, a foot bath, a body scrub, and a body mask!

Friends enjoying a milk bath at Absolute Spa - Things to do in Batam

As a specialty treatment, we could also choose between ear candling, shoulder and back massage, or totok wajah (face massage) — my muscles were feeling tight so I picked the shoulder and massage to unwind.

Besides the soothing spa experience and exceptional massage, the hospitality of the lady boss and staff also truly made me feel like royalty 👑

5) Swim and Suntan at Sense Coffee and Pool

Girl at Sense Coffee and Pool - Cafes in Batam

At Sense Coffee and Pool , you can have a cup of coffee, suntan and swim all under a roof! While we didn’t have time to go for a dip in the pool, you can use it for an additional Rp50,000.

Girl chilling at Sense Coffee and Pool - Weekend Getaway from Singapore

That said though, we did make use of the free beach chairs along the pool for a short sun tan and even got some work done in the cafe (there are charging points all around)! Plus, the coffee here is really affordable. I got a cup of iced Americano for only Rp22,000 — it tasted strong but wasn’t bitter.

Needless to say, we liked this place so much that we ultimately spent 2 hours here suntanning, getting our daily dose of caffeine and taking lots of photos!

Cost: From Rp22,000/cup of coffee (~S$2) Opening hours: 9AM – 8PM (Mon – Sat), 8AM – 9PM (Sun) How to get there: 5min Gojek ride from Water Park Taman Dutamas ( Google Maps )

6) Get Your Dose of Water Sports at Batam Wakepark

Forget dipping in pools, if you’re looking for a thrilling water activity, head to Batam Wakepark at Golden City. Both beginner and expert obstacle courses are available, so get ready for a splashing good time regardless of your experience level!

This beginner-friendly park even has a two-tower cable system, where riders are pulled along by two parallel ropes, making it easier for beginners to learn the sport.

Cost: Rp200,000 (~S$17) for a 1hr experience Opening hours: 9AM – 6PM, closed on Wed How to get there: 13min Gojek ride from Batam Centre Point International Ferry Terminal ( Google Maps )

7) Hike and Feed Deers at Panbil Nature Reserve

Deer feeding at Panbil Nature Reserve - Things to do in Batam

Perhaps the most unexpected thing to do in Batam was this — hiking at Panbil Nature Reserve — trek through a rustic forest, feed sambal deers, and even try crystal hunting in the wild!

Panbil offers four hiking packages , but we chose the easy Semar Hiking Trail (Rp280,000/pax) which was suitable for everyone and even included interactions with sambal deers. Plus, the package also comes with a free meal voucher!

Girl swinging on vine at Panbil Nature Reserve - Things to do in Batam

Our favourite parts on the trail were the surprises. One moment it was swinging like Tarzan on a vine. The next, competing in a game of throwing branches through a hoop.

But the biggest surprise was seeing our guide pull crystals out of the ground. He had a bag full of them but refused to offer us any tips for finding one… so we ended up purchasing one from him for Rp50,000 :’)

first travel batam

If you’re up for a challenge, go for the Pandan (Rp335,000/pax) or Palawan (Rp390,000/pax) Hiking Trail — these trails have some uphill climbs along the way and you’ll still get to interact with sambal deers at the end! For those with no interest in feeding the sambal deers, choose the Rotan Trail (Rp230,000/pax).

*Note: Contact Panbil through WhatsApp at +62 813-7112-2624 to book a hiking tour. For more information, check out their Instagram page .

*Pro-tip: Wear covered pants and a long-sleeve top, and purchase a local mosquito repellent before hiking at Panbil Nature Reserve. Repellents from Singapore don’t work against the mosquitoes here — we learnt it the hard way, unfortunately.

Cost: Rp280,000/pax (~S$24) for a 3hr experience Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM How to get there: 7min Gojek ride from Panbil Mall ( Google Maps )

Tips for planning your weekend getaway to Batam

first travel batam

From adventurous hikes to having drinks at an open-air rooftop bar and getting pampered at a spa — we sure had lots of fun on our Batam getaway! While some things didn’t go according to plan ( ahem empty amusement park), we adapted and made the most of the situation.

Nevertheless, it’s still good to be prepared. So here are some tips for planning your weekend getaway to Batam:

1) Remember to book your pre-trip essentials — including the Sindo Ferry Round Trip Ferry Tickets between Singapore and Batam, and 4G e-SIM . We booked ours through Klook!

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

2) Download the Gojek app on your phone — it’s the most convenient and affordable mode of transport in Batam. For instance, a 15-minute journey to a nearby location costs just Rp30,000 (~S$2.60) on average.

3) Exchange sufficient cash for your trip — some activity providers such as Panbil Nature Reserve and Belalang Adventures only accept cash. Money changers are available at Harbourfront Centre where you’ll catch your ferry to Batam.

Girl enjoying the view at Marriott Hotel - Weekend Getaway from Singapore

4) Check the weather forecast — especially if you plan to go for outdoor activities or catch the sunset.

5) Contact the activity provider in advance — to check if the activities are available during your visit. If not, make the most of the situation like what we did at Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam amusement park 😉

Once part of a maritime sultanate, the islands of the Riau Archipelago are now a zone of major economic activity, and Batam has been developed into a major industrial satellite of Singapore and is popular with weekend visitors from there. Most come for its golf courses, beaches, duty-free shopping and seafood. Ferries and hydrofoils ply the waters to and from Singapore almost hourly, from sunrise to sundown.

Batam is surrounded by clear waters and white sands; among its most popular beaches are Nongsa Beach, Waterfront City Beach and Melur Beach.

In the city, numerous spiritual and architectural sites celebrate the island's history and heritage, including the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist temple, Tua Pek Kong temple and the Barelang Bridge.

Being a duty-free zone, shopping in Batam is appealing. Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall is one of the largest on the island. For those seeking activity and adventure, there’s plenty of snorkelling, diving, golfing and hiking.

Need some help planning? Maybe our Indonesian local experts can help you out!

From sparkling beach life to ancient temples, Batam has something for everyone. Here are the top attractions and things to do in Batam.

#1 Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya

This striking Buddhist temple is one of the largest in Indonesia , and is known for its blend of traditional Buddist and modern architecture. The main prayer hall features a statue of the Maitreya Buddha, considered to be the future Buddha in Buddhist tradition. The statue is 25m tall and is surrounded by smaller statues of other Buddhist deities.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya is also a cultural hub that hosts various activities and events throughout the year, such as meditation classes, Dharma talks and Buddhist festivals. The temple’s vegetarian restaurant is worth sampling.

#2 Tua Pek Kong temple

This Chinese temple is one of the oldest and most revered spiritual sites in the city. It is dedicated to the deity Tua Pek Kong, who is said to protect sailors and fishermen. His statue is inside the main prayer hall.

The temple's architecture is a mix of Chinese and local Indonesian styles, and features colourful embellishments and intricate carvings. The temple is particularly popular during the Chinese New Year, when it hosts various events and celebrations.

#3 Barelang Bridge

The Barelang Bridge is a chain of six bridges connecting Batam, Rempang, and Galang. Each of the six has a unique design and spans different parts of the strait; the name "Barelang" is derived from the names of the three islands.

The Bareling Bridge has become a popular tourist attraction in Batam, with many visitors coming to admire the views of the strait and the surrounding islands.

#4 Nongsa Beach

Nongsa’s white sands, warm clear waters, lush greenery and stunning sunsets make for an unsurprisingly alluring combination. A few waterfront resorts here even have private beaches, where visitors can bask in a more exclusive experience.

Nongsa Beach is also a popular spot for water sports – kayaking, jet skiing and parasailing are all available.

#5 Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall

Nagoya Hill is one of the largest and most popular shopping destinations in the city, with a wide range of stores, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment options. The mall is divided into several levels, with each level dedicated to different types of products and services.

Find everything from clothes and cosmetics to electronics and furniture. Familiar International brands include H&M, Uniqlo and Samsung. There’s also a cinema, karaoke rooms and an arcade.

Batam has a variety of accommodation for a range of budgets and tastes. The best areas to stay in Batam include:

Known for its bustling atmosphere, shopping centres, and nightlife, Nagoya is also home to numerous budget and mid-range hotels, and can be a good choice for travellers on a budget.

Batam Center

Batam Center is ideal for those keen for easy access to transportation – plus a quieter atmosphere.

Nongsa is a popular area for those after a more luxurious and secluded experience, with several high-end resorts and private beaches.

Waterfront City

Waterfront City is a newer area of Batam, located on the western coast of the island. It is home to several upscale hotels and a golf course.

Check the best accommodation in Batam .

Batam is known for its seafood and local delicacies, such as otak-otak (grilled fish cake) and sate (grilled meat skewers). From traditional street food stalls to upscale restaurants to International fast food joints, the hungry visitor is never short of options.

Here are the best places to eat in Batam:

  • Golden Prawn Seafood Restaurant Delicious seafood and waterfront views.
  • A2 Foodcourt The popular hawker centre in Nagoya has a wide variety of local and international cuisines at affordable prices.
  • Rezeki Seafood Restaurant Well-frequented by locals, this is a great choice for seafood in Batam Centre.
  • Warung Mak Beng This small, family-run restaurant located in Nagoya is known for its fried fish and sambal sauce.
  • The Coffee Story This popular coffee shop chain in Batam is known for its delicious coffee and fresh pastries.

The best way to get around Batam is by taxi but there are a number of cheaper options too.

Taxis are widely available in Batam and are a convenient option for those who prefer a private and comfortable mode of transportation. It is recommended to use reputable taxi companies and negotiate the fare before getting in the car.

Public buses are a cheap and convenient way to get around Batam, with several routes covering different parts of the island. However, buses can be crowded and may not be the most comfortable option.

By motorbike taxi

Motorbike taxis, known as ojeks , are a popular mode of transportation in Batam, particularly for short distances. However, safety may be a concern, and it is recommended to wear a helmet and negotiate the fare before getting on the bike.

Car rental is a popular option for those who prefer to drive themselves and explore the island at their own pace. Several car rental companies are available in Batam, and it is recommended to book in advance.

The number of days needed to explore Batam depends on your travel plans and interests. If you are interested in experiencing the island's beaches, water sports, and outdoor activities, a 2-3 day trip to Batam would be sufficient.

This will give you enough time to explore popular attractions like the Barelang Bridge, the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall, and the Batam Miniature Park. If you're planning to take day trips to nearby islands such as Bintan or Singapore, you may want to add an extra day or two to your itinerary.

Tip: our local experts can help you plan your dream trip.

The best time to visit Batam is during the dry season (May to September), especially in terms of weather. Temperatures sit at around 30°C, and things are generally dry and sunny.

However, it’s worth remembering that this is also the most popular time to visit, and things can get pretty crowded. To avoid the crowds and still enjoy good weather, visit from March to April and October to November.

Monsoon is generally from November to February. Heavy rainfall and the odd thunderstorm can be expected.

Most people will travel to Batam from Singapore using fast ferries but the island has its own airport as well.

AirAsia, Garuda, Sriwijaya and Lion Air have flights from Jakarta to Batam. Hang Nadim Airport is on the eastern side of Pulau Batam.

Ferries frequently zip back and forth between Singapore and the Riau islands. Crossings from Singapore’s Harbourfront Centre (the main terminal) take 30–60 minutes, depending on the type of boat and destination in Batam. There is also a boat from Malaysia to Batam Centre. Ferry operators include Batam Fast, Majestic Ferry and Sindo Ferry.

FAQs about Batam

first travel batam

It is highly recommended you visit Batam during the months of October to early December. The air is cool and dry and there are not yet many tourists (compared to the peak season of late December to early January). The period after school holiday from March to April is also a great time to visit as there are many festivals in and around Batam.

Batam is a safe place to be in. Here and there there can be petty crimes such as pick pocketing, so beware of your belongings.

It really depends on how much time you have got. The minimum recommended duration is 3 days while you can stay as long as 1 week to fully enjoy the city. Although Batam does not seem to have a lot of things to do at first sight, one will have to dig deeper to know the must-dos. From nightly street food scenes to the hidden shopping alleys, and occasional visit to craft village, Batam may just well be your most special destination thus far. If you need some suggestion, contact us.

To find out what to do in Batam, click here to check our blogpost!

You can start off the day by engaging in sport activities such as banana boat water sports, enjoy a seafood lunch at our recommended restaurants, and spend the day city shopping in Batam Center. End the day with a delightful stay at our best Batam hotels.

  • Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall: famous for city shopping, fine dinning and entertainment options
  • Barelang Bridge: offer stunning ocean views
  • Waterfront City: beautiful beach that offers water sports, dining and entertainment activities
  • Turi Beach Resort : gorgeous resort that offers luxurious rooms and beautiful ocean views

It depends on you, but Batam  is famous for Kueh Lapis, Bird Nest and even some local snacks such as Keropuk. You can get freshly made ones from the factory outlet in our Batam Tour!

Ferries from Singapore to Batam are mainly ran by 4 different Ferry companies such as Sindo Ferry, Majestic Ferry, Batam Fast and Horizon Ferry.

You can refer to their respective websites for ferry schedules. We recommend Sindo Ferry but typically they depart 1 hour apart.

Latest information can be found on the Batam ferry companies’ respective websites.

You can also refer to our blog about most updated ferry schedule from Singapore to Batam. Click here for more information.

Most ferries from Harbour Front Centre arrive at Batam Centre Ferry Terminal. For our packages, it will mainly be from Harbour Front to Batam Center Ferry terminal and return from Batam Center Ferry Terminal to Harbour Front Centre.

If you want to have convenience in batam, hotels that are located in the batam city center are recommended:

  • Hotel Santika Batam

If you want to escape the city and you are a nature lover:

  • Turi beach Resort Batam
  • Montigo Resort Nongsa Batam

What should I prepare for my Batam trip?

That said, just like any other island holiday, make sure to pack for the beach, with items like light clothing, swimwear, and sunscreen.

What language do people in Batam speak?

Bahasa Indonesian and local Malay remain the most common languages of Batam (among its locals). However, you’ll find that Mandarin and English are also widely spoken due to a wide market of Singaporeans travelling to the city.

What food is Batam famous for?

Aside from the usual (familiar) Indonesian fare like beef rendang, mie goreng, and soto ayam, you can’t miss out on Batam’s speciality: seafood . Sea snails, crab, crayfish, and an array of shellfish are must-tries. Famous restaurants on Batam Island include Golden Prawn 933 and Rezeki Seafood Restaurant.

How do you get around Batam?

Hailing a taxi is one way to get around Batam (just be sure to agree on a price before driving off). Alternatively, Gojek and Grab are both available in — and the most popular way to get around — Batam .

Finally, which is better, Batam or Bintan?

first travel batam

Batam is more affordable, has more shopping and eating options, and is generally livelier.

Bintan is better for relaxing with its more lavish resort options, spa offerings, and slightly more scenic beaches. It’s also slightly more expensive than Batam.

That said, it all depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is.

SINGAPORE: With the launch of Singapore's first vaccinated travel lane (VTL) via sea on Friday (Feb 25) to Batam and Bintan in Indonesia, those planning to visit these destinations can now look forward to two-way quarantine-free travel.

The travel bubble is, for now, limited to trips between Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and the Nongsapura International Ferry Terminal in Batam as well as the Bandar Bintan Telani Ferry Terminal in Bintan.

CNA journalists Vanessa Lim and Jeremy Long made a quick trip to Batam to check out the process, and came back with some tips for a smooth travel experience.

CHECK AND PREPARE ALL NECESSARY DOCUMENTS

Prior to your trip, be sure to check Singapore  and Indonesia’s  official websites for the latest information on COVID-19 travel arrangements and requirements.

Do plan ahead and give yourself enough time to get ready all the necessary documents, such as travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage and a pre-departure polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test – both of which could take several days to prepare.

first travel batam

First travellers from Batam arrive in Singapore under new vaccinated travel lane

Two-way quarantine-free travel between Singapore and Batam, Bintan from Feb 25

What do i need to prepare.

Download Indonesia’s COVID-19 tracing PeduliLindungi app and complete your profile, including details such as your citizenship, passport number and date of birth

Verify your vaccination certificate using this link . You must have received a complete dose of COVID-19 vaccine administered at least 14 days before departure. Do note that it could take a few days for your verification request to be approved, so be sure to get that done ahead of time

If possible, print out hard copies of your pre-departure PCR test result (to be done within 72 hours of departure), proof of hotel booking in the Nongsa area and certificate of health insurance with a minimum coverage value of S$30,000. This will save you the trouble of having to pass your phone to the authorities for them to review the documents

Before arriving in Batam, make sure you complete the EHAC form on the PeduliLindungi app. You will need to include the ship’s name and number, as well as digital copies of your vaccination certificates and the dates of your doses

BRING MOTION SICKNESS PILLS

If you’re prone to seasickness, bring some motion sickness pills as the waters can get a bit choppy during the boat trip to and fro Batam.

BRING MOSQUITO REPELLENT AND ITCH-RELIEF CREAM

This is something we badly wished we had brought. There were many mosquitoes in the Nongsa area and we had to sometimes stand in open-air spaces, such as while waiting for our on-arrival PCR test results. For extra protection from those pesky mozzies, opt for long pants and long-sleeve shirts.

FILL UP ARRIVAL CARD BEFORE ARRIVING IN SINGAPORE

For your return trip to Singapore, be sure to fill up the SG Arrival Card  within three days prior to the date of your arrival. This will help to avoid unnecessary delays during immigration clearance.

You will also have to do a supervised, self-administered antigen rapid test (ART) at a Quick Test Centre or at a Combined Test Centre within 24 hours of your arrival in Singapore. You can book an appointment using this link .

You will need to bring either your NRIC or your passport for verification. The test costs S$15 (inclusive of GST) and only cashless payment is accepted.

Indonesian leader Prabowo’s brother building Batam tin-processing plant to supply electronics sector

first travel batam

JAKARTA – A 100 billion rupiah (S$8.4 million) tin-processing plant is being built in Batam by the younger brother of Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto, with the aim of supplying key raw materials to electronics makers based on the industrial island and in the region.

The plant by Mr Hashim Djojohadikusumo’s company Solder Tin Andalan will source raw tin from a mine in the tin-rich Bangka Belitung islands off Sumatra, 570km to south-east of Batam.

That tin mine is operated by Arsari Tambang, a company controlled by Mr Hashim, a prominent businessman.

He told reporters at the plant’s ground-breaking ceremony that he hopes to tap demand from manufacturers such as electronics makers that had relocated from China to South-east Asia.

The plant will churn out, among others, solder paste and solder wire – crucial materials used in printed circuit boards.

Mr Hashim said the plant will benefit from the relocation of electronics manufacturers to South-east Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, and he expressed confidence that those relocated plants will likely be buyers of Solder Tin Andalan products.

“Among the main sources of solders (for global supply) are Malaysia and India. Our target is to get some of their market share, relying on the tin resources in Indonesia. We can operate more competitively,” he said.

Mr Hashim, 69, said the project dovetails with President Joko Widodo’s downstreaming policy that prioritises the processing of natural commodities in Indonesia, thus moving the country higher in the industrial value chain.

“President-elect Prabowo Subianto has affirmed... and has vowed that the downstreaming programme will continue. The establishment of this plant is one of his commitments,” Mr Hashim said at a press briefing in Batam on May 10.

Defence Minister Prabowo, 72, will be inaugurated as Indonesia’s eighth president in October, when Mr Widodo’s second and final term in office ends. The full name of Mr Prabowo, a former army general, is Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, though he has used the shorter version of his name since his military days.

The late father of the two brothers, Mr Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, was one of Indonesia’s most influential economists who held ministerial positions under then presidents Sukarno and Suharto.

The Solder Tin Andalan plant is slated to be ready in five months. It is being built in the Tunas Kabil industrial park in Batam, a major industrial island south of Singapore.

The plant will initially have an annual production capacity of 2,000 tonnes of processed tin and hire 320 workers, but it has ample room to scale up as the export market that can potentially be served by Batam is estimated to be 16,000 tonnes per year.

Mr Hashim said Solder Tin Andalan has readied 100 billion rupiah to fund the plant’s construction and another 300 billion rupiah as working capital, among others, to source the raw tin from Bangka Belitung.

Solder Tin Andalan chairman Aryo Djojohadikusumo, Mr Hashim’s son, said at the same press briefing: “Our main target is the export market, but what is extraordinary about Batam is there are many existing electronics manufacturers operating here and the number will increase.”

Mr Aryo said the mobile phone manufacturing industry in Batam is also a potential market to cater to, pointing out: ”A lot of Indonesians are not even aware that iPhones are also assembled here.”

Mobile phone of other brands, including Poco and Xiaomi are also assembled, in Batam.

Asean becoming a data centre hotbed

Land and power constraints driving operators to seek new markets for expansion, says Cushman & Wakefield

PUBLISHED : 10 May 2024 at 05:30

NEWSPAPER SECTION: Business

first travel batam

Demand in secondary and tertiary data centre markets continues to grow as operators and developers increasingly face power and land constraints in mature markets, according to the latest "Global Data Centre Market Comparison" report by the property services company Cushman & Wakefield.

Southeast Asia performs strongly in this regard, with Bangkok ranking third within the Asia-Pacific emerging markets category. Batam (Malaysia) and Manila are eighth and ninth, respectively, the report shows.

Bangkok's regional ranking also lifts it into 10th place in the global emerging markets category.

Demand overflow is evident in emerging locations across Asia-Pacific including Osaka in Japan, Chennai and Hyderabad in India, and Johor and Batam in Malaysia. Each is benefiting from high competition for sites in nearby mature markets: Tokyo, Mumbai and Singapore.

Singapore and Hong Kong both slipped out of the global established Top 10 ranking for data centres as a result of their limited land supply.

"We continue to experience unprecedented demand for data centres across key Southeast Asian cities and do not expect this to stop until power availability becomes a challenge," said Vivek Dahiya, head of the Asia Pacific data centre advisory team at Cushman & Wakefield.

first travel batam

Population growth, mobile penetration, 5G, the transition to cloud computing, online gaming and now AI -- all these tailwinds will continue to drive the appetite for data handling within the industry.

This growing digitisation, along with continued infrastructure deployments into emerging Asia-Pacific markets, has led to growth in emerging data centre cities including Johor, Batam, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Manila.

"Singapore remains highly desirable for its location and infrastructure, although it faces both land and power constraints, and comparatively higher land and development costs than many of its neighbouring markets," said Mr Dahiya.

"At a country level, Singapore is on track to join mainland China, Japan, Australia and India as markets with over 1 Gigawatt in operational capacity in 2024."

Gareth Powell, country head of Thailand with Cushman & Wakefield, reports significant demand from multinational corporations looking to capitalise on Bangkok's connectivity, available energy and relatively low operational costs. "This is evidenced by increasing land prices in previously undeveloped areas," he said.

"The Thai government's digital policies, including tax incentives and subsidies for technology investments and efforts to streamline data centre construction processes, reflect a strong commitment to supporting the digital economy," he added. "Combined with Thailand's strategic Southeast Asia location and active trade agreements, Bangkok is becoming a key player in the regional data centre market."

Now in its fifth year, the 2024 Global Data Centre Market Comparison uses an updated methodology to better reflect the rapid changes in the factors shaping the data centre market. High-weight factors include power availability, land availability and market size; mid-weight factors include development pipeline, land price, power cost and cloud availability/operator presence.

Thirty Asia-Pacific markets were included in the report, including new entrants Auckland, Batam, Brisbane, Perth, Pune and Taipei.

The report shows Asia-Pacific is expected to see its existing operational capacity more than double from the current 10.6GW in the coming five to seven years, thanks to its development pipeline of 13.3GW. Capacity in both the Americas and Europe, the Middle East and Africa regions is also expected to more than double. Among the report's other findings:

  • While higher interest rates have slowed transaction volumes for many commercial real estate sectors, there has been consistent momentum for institutional capital expansion in the data centre space. While there have been a few cases of projects being paused or cancelled, fears of a complete halt of expansion plans in the wake of worldwide economic stress have been largely unfounded.
  • The amount of capital raised targeting the data centre sector dropped from $41 billion in 2022 (a record) to $7 billion, closer to historical averages.
  • With many of the primary colocation providers now paired off with key institutional investors, there are few prospects for large-scale acquisition opportunities remaining in established markets. Investors seeking to enter the space may want to focus on partnering with or acquiring emerging operators, ones that are less mature in their expansion plans or focused on specific regions.
  • Hyperscalers continue to drive the market, entering tertiary markets first and also building momentum for self-performing hyperscale assets.
  • Secondary markets are anticipated to continue their growth in importance as certain primary markets have run into constrictions, with power usage and sustainability scrutinised more carefully.
  • Data centre developers around the world continue to face increasing pushback from government and local communities when it comes to development. Challenges have arisen from grid power availability versus competing uses, resistance, real or perceived, that data centres may not be bringing the level of economic betterment in the form of employment and taxes that local communities desire.
  • Operators for their part have made increasingly stronger commitments to renewable power usage, providing investments that work to benefit their surrounding communities.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
