Dine On A Boat In Kolkata On River Hoogly With Stunning Views Of Howrah Bridge

In a first, a mesmerising shikara dining experience has been launched on the mighty Hoogly river in Kolkata. India’s first floating hotel, Polo Floatel has come up with this epic experience, which will allow guests to relish their meals while enjoying a one-hour boat ride on the river. While getting stroked by the cool river breeze, they can immerse in the vibe of the city with the Howrah Bridge on one side and the Vidhyasagar Setu on the other. The boat will have a rustic picnic basket comprising delectable snacks, beverages and desserts.

Natives of Kolkata often call the shikara ride a ‘nouka ride’. ‘Nouka’ is a Bengali word that stands for boat. The nouka ride by Polo Floatel begins as early as 6:45 AM. Along with the picnic basket, the ride also provides guests with Bluetooth speakers and a polaroid picture. Polo Floatel ( earlier Floatel) is one of the swankiest hotels in the heart of Kolkata and it sits on the Hoogly river . The morning boat rides pamper guests with juice or piping-hot tea, fresh fruits, Kolkata’s iconic Prajapati biscuits, a breakfast snack ( poha / upma/kathi roll / chola luchi ) and sandesh. If you’re taking the ride post lunch, the menu will include tea in khullar or coffee, Prajapati biscuits and jhalmuri in paper cone .

Witness The Beauty Of The Ancient Ghats

The boat ride from Polo Floatel can take you through the historic ghats of the city. The river banks, dotted with a plethora of ancient buildings, shrines and ferry bridges will strike your awe for sure. The ghats, bustling crowds rushing to catch the ferries, kids bathing in the river and the constant movement of vehicles on the two bridges will give you a glimpse into the heart and soul of the city. The beauty lies in the calmness of the river in contrast to the hurly-burly all around.

“Great Riverside floating restaurant ” Review of Joloshree - The Riviere Habitat

Sizzling Breownie...

This floating restaurant on the river Hooghly is a great eating option while you are travelling through Chandannagore or the adjacent locations . The following is my  experience at the restaurant ( Rating in a Scale of 5, 5 being highest):- A. Location : At Rani ghat, The Strand, Chandannagar. This restaurantis located on a barge anchored on the river Hooghly. Opening Hours is 12.30 pm till 10.30 pm. (Rating 4.5) B. Cuisine : Multi cuisine , serves Indian, chinese and quick snacks as well. (Rating 4) C. Ambience: The decor of the restaurant with dark and light contrast themed interior , row of large glass windows facing the river, gives it a great warm feeling. The decor is simplistic but warm.(Rate 4.5). D. Food tried : We had our lunch at the place. We started wit Ghol (Ra. 145) and Golden Fried Prawns ( Rs. 545). Aa main course, we ordered mutton Rogan Josh ( Rs. 455) and Tandoori Roti (Rs. 45). We had Kesar Firni (Rs. 200) as dessert. (Rating 4) E. Food taste: All the items we tried were well prepared. Prawn was tasty though the batter was slightly thicker than expected. Mutton was succulent, well cooked, good in taste, though I found the preparation was excessively oily than required. ( Rating 4.) F. Food presentstion : Food presentation was good (Rating 4.m). G. Service: The  service of the restaurant is excellent. The staff was very courteous.(Rating 4.5). H. Value for money: At Rs. 1729 for the wholesome lunch for two, it was slightly pricey, but considering the location, decor and overall ambience, I find the place value for money and good to try, if you are around this area.(Rating 4) I. Overall experience : Very Good (Rating 4.)

I will not recommend anyone to go there.Chicken clear soup smelled like kerosene.Price is too high as per food quality. Though it it on Ganga , we don't feel that.outside restuarant Ambience is better than inside.

It's 14th feb....A day for mandatory Dine out with your love. JALASHREE i think the best option. It is anchored at Ranighat. The view is great with a lovely atmosphere. Taste of food items are awesome but the price was little bit high. You have to purchase a ticket Rs 50 /- per person but it will be deducted if you avail the restaurant service. Staff behavior was very polite. But you have to Wait a couple of hours in pick hours. Guys don't miss the murg Malai kabab there.

It’s a lovely little restaurant right on the waterfront. I would recommend going early (no pre-booking) so you get a nice view. The waiter has some great recommendations based on your preferences- I absolutely loved the prawn Malai curry and the fresh bekti. The Aam panna is their signature and they make it so well.

floating restaurant west bengal tourism

How about floating on the Ganga and dipping in your favourite dishes this Durga Puja? Well, mix and match gastronomical delights with breath-taking views of the Ganges, as a floating restaurant is soon to come up on the Ganga. Two houseboats have been used for this purpose by the State Tourism Department. The restaurant will be partly air-conditioned. For those who wish to avail of the AC will sit downstairs. Others who wish to enjoy the river breeze will sit on the deck while having their meals.

The fabulous restaurant can hold around 60 guests at a time. The booking can also be done online or directly on spot at Babughat. Another houseboat will be turned into a conference houseboat for corporate meetings. One of the restaurants will be docked at Babughat. The other houseboat will float along Chandernagar and Barrackpore. The menu list is equally sumptuous, with Mughlai and Bengali cuisines topping the list.

The most 'bakwaas' restaurant ever seen You go to a restaurant for what? Food. correct? The title of 'MOST' is for 3 reasons 1)We tried to order. The Stuart was unable to give us any options, maybe he did not know how the food tasted here. He might too be eating out at another place ;-) We ordered for Khazan-e-Lazzat. He came back and said that it cannot be prepared. Then we ordered for Dum ka Paneer, again he came back to say that the chef was unable to prepare that so we ordered for Paneer ka Dulma as there were just these three options for Rich Diet Vegetarians. And O! He came back again and said that the chef was unable to prepare it. We called up the manager for a complain now as we had no notion now to eat there. He came and told that the chef does not know how to prepare these dishes as mostly non-vegetarians visit this place. The menu card, which too was in a very bad shape (lamination coming out, pages filthy) had already struck out 3-4 items with a BLACK MARKER. I told him why don't they strike out these 3 dishes too to which he replied that you will get a feedback form, you can write ANYTHING you like there. 2)ATTITUDE, man! And when you fill up that form with single stars, 3 waiters come up to you and say that you must give them atleast 3 stars as their service was being challanged by these low star ranking. It was true too that the waiters cannot be pulled up in this because they SERVED US NOTHING. But we stuck to our ranking as this was BADest MANNER with which you bid farewell to a guest 3)The upkeep of the restaurant was not as per the hype - INDIA's ONLY When you say it is the only one, you have to keep it up to a mark not less than 3 stars. The wood in the floor is rotting as is the furniture The place gave a bad taste when we just entered it, the vibes of the guests was positive and jolly but the vibes from the establishment were stinky

The approach to restaurant is not so good. Inside it is and average restaurant. The view to River is not so good at night time. It does not give a very thrilling experience. The quality of food is average with slow service.

This hotel is designed to provide a tranquil experience of sojourning on the banks of the holy Hooghly River. The noise of the traffic along one of the busiest streets in Kolkata, Strand Road, was left behind as I entered the land-based reception of the hotel, which is docked just behind the Hooghly river.

The reception, donned in marine blue with lots of shipping equipment, leads to the jetty behind, to reach the Floating hotel.

A Day Trip to Serampore’s The Denmark Tavern

Serampore has always been a perfect and pleasant option for a day trip from Kolkata due to its rich heritage of Danish, English and Bengali culture and history. The recently renovated, 233-year old” The Denmark Tavern” is the newest addition to Serampore’s diverse offerings to travelers and history buffs.

Table of Contents

How to reach Denmark Tavern:

Serampore is just 25 kms away from Kolkata. Local trains leave every few minutes from Howrah to Serampore and it takes just 30 minutes. Another exciting option is to take a train to Barrackpore and then board the local ferry to Serampore

Where is the Tavern located:

The Denmark Tavern is located near the Serampore Police Lines and just opposite of the Hooghly riverside. It is a 15-minutes walk from the railway station of Serampore.

The past of The Denmark Tavern takes us back to a time when Serampore went by the name of Fredricksnagore. James Parr built the tavern in 1786 near the Nishan Ghat, where the Danes kept their flagstaffs and salutation cannons and which directly faced the British cantonment of Barrackpore. It was established as a riverside café and hotel. It catered the Europeans of that era with food, drinks and accommodation at reasonable rates. Fredricksnagore was a prosperous trading destination and a hub of 18th century Bengali Renaissance. As a result, soon the tavern was bustling with European citizens and travelers. The popularity of the tavern was partly due to its fitting setting at the Hooghly riverfront. However, as the Danish fortunes waned in India, the fate of the tavern also took a setback. Gradually its name went into oblivion.

Denmark Tavern

The Present:

The erstwhile tavern remained in oblivion under the rubble till 2015, when series of earnest and desperate research revealed its history. Afterwards, the National Museum of Denmark with active cooperation of Government of West Bengal started the arduous task of restoring the tavern to its former glory. The old edifice was renovated finally in 2018. It opened it’s door as a heritage café and tavern with bits of modern touch. Also, the West Bengal Heritage Commission declared it a heritage building. The inauguration of The Denmark Tavern has now distinguished Serampore as an offbeat dining destination. Just like the tavern of the yore, it is teeming with visitors in its present avatar.

untitled 7464 Edit

The Park Group of Hotels maintain both the restaurant and hotel at present. The menu features Danish, Bengali, Italian, Chinese and North Indian cuisines. We went for the Danish delicacies such as Danish Style Chicken Sausage, Grilled Fish and Danish Pastry with Ice Cream. We had a lipsmacking Tutti Frutti Sundae too. The food was delicious and we loved the Danish Pastry. The service was prompt and staffs cordial. There is also a bakery by the Flurys.

IMG 20200126 133330

The tavern provides accommodation in five spacious rooms, which blend the past with the present. Initially, the West Bengal Tourism Department managed the hotel. Recently, the Park group of hotels has taken over its management. Visit https://www.theparkhotels.com/ for booking rooms online. However, restoration work is still ongoing. We suggest making thorough inquiry before planning a stay here. Visit their Facebook page for further inquiry https://www.facebook.com/thedenmarktavernserampore/

IMG 20200126 131351

All in all, if the hustle bustle of your daily life has brought you to your wit’s end, book a table in The Denmark Tavern, get engrossed in its rich heritage while munching on the Danish delicacies and later enjoy the panorama of the placid Hooghly river. Let yourself be taken back to the times when the tavern scurried with traders and travelers and their manifold tales.

Denmark Tavern

Other places of interest in Serampore:

After enjoying a brunch at The Denmark Tavern, you can visit the following places in Serampore: 1. St. Olav’s Church , which is one of the most important landmarks of the town. Built between 1800 and 1826 and restored recently, the monogram of King Christian VII of Denmark is still visible on the façade.

St Olavs Church

2. The Old Danish Gate , the gateway to erstwhile Serampore.

Danish Gate

3. Serampore College , the second oldest college of India and the first one to offer degree. The Carey Museum is located in the premises of the college, which houses rare manuscripts, books and artifacts belonging to William Carey.

4. Serampore Johnnagar Baptist Church , located just a stone’s throw away from Serampore College. Built in 1800, it was the first residence of William Carey. 5. Goswami Rajbari , also known as Serampore Rajbari. It exhibits a fine amalgamation of Indian and European style of architecture. 6. Unique Lodge , the 130-year old ancestral home of the Bhattacharya family of Serampore. 7. The Mission Cemetery , the burial ground of Carey and Marshman. 8. Mahesh , famous for its Jagannath Temple and Rathyatra.

A floating restaurant amid sea and sky

Amid the pristine charm of the Bay of Bengal's silver waters on one side and the sound of the waves on the other, people will soon enjoy a unique dining experience in Visakhapatnam.

Much to the delight of the denizens, MV Maa, the Bangladeshi cargo vessel, is all set to don a new avatar of a floating restaurant.

The recent decision taken to convert the vessel into a floating restaurant has brought cheer to the people of the port city as it would be the first floating restaurant in Andhra Pradesh.

In order to develop the abandoned Bangladeshi ship into a tourist attraction, the vessel that ran aground at Tenneti Park in the city during a cyclone on October 12 last year will be converted into a floating restaurant.

With a timeline of six months, Gill Marines of Visakhapatnam and Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) intend to take up the project at an estimated cost of Rs.10.5 crore.

Initially, Gill Marines had taken over the vessel from the insurers and offered to sell the abandoned ship to the APTDC for Rs.4.5 crore. However, following several negotiations, the company agreed to sell the MV Maa for Rs.1.25 crore to the APTDC. Subsequently, the proposal was placed before the cabinet and the government approved it.

Built in 2009, the 79.57-meter-long vessel stretches up to 12.63-m breadth and 6.12-m depth with a capacity of 1,599 MT.

After weeks of salvage operation and restoration turning out to be a futile exercise, the owners of the vessel Advance Shipping Ltd of Dhaka decided to dispose of it as scrap.

However, followed by discussions, it was later decided to convert the vessel into a floating restaurant. The APTDC will extend required support for the proposed restaurant by providing the required infrastructure for the project like access roads, pathways, landscaping, lighting, water supply, public toilets, and many more.

One-and-a-half months before, it was agreed to develop the vessel through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) exclusively created for the purpose.

APTDC officials were asked to submit a detailed project report (DPR) on the work to be handled by the SPV for the development of the vessel and work to be carried out by the corporation for the development of supporting infrastructure in two different parts along with the timelines for their execution so that the proposal can mutually be reviewed and an agreement can be drawn for its effective implementation.

In order to facilitate APTDC to handle the project jointly with Gill Marines, sent a letter to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority to bring Tenneti Park under the ambit of APTDC for its development and future maintenance. With a capacity of 300 persons, the floating restaurant will have an open-air restaurant on top of the vessel and another similar dining facility with a sky-roof. But much before the completion of the project, MV Maa will be thrown open to the public this month-end.

In the months to follow, the APTDC officials are hopeful that the floating restaurant will be a major draw for tourists.

Newly built well decorated cruise with good arrangements including food. Helpful and polite staff. Breathtaking sunset and evening view. Our ride was shortened a bit due to bad weather and the cruise didn't cross Howrah bridge. Safety First !!

Although the management in managing things during sail n dine was found to be little bit rusty as there was so much rush that evening. `Meals on water': Converting Bangladeshi Cargo Ship into floating restaurant hits roadblock in Vizag

Bangladesh cargo ship ran aground at Tenneti Park during a cyclone in October 2020. The owners of the ship were unable to bear the cost of salvaging it and dumped it in Vizag city. Vizag-based firm Gill Marines took over the abandoned ship from the insurers PNI Club (North of England) for a price of Rs 1.25 crore.

Plans to develop the abandoned Bangladesh cargo ship `MV MAA' into a floating restaurant seem to have been delayed.

The ship was to be developed under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) at Tenneti Park. Not much progress has been made on the project.

In December 2021, former Tourism Minister M Srinivasa Rao said the cargo ship will be developed as a major tourist attraction in Vizag city. He said it will take six months.

Surender Singh Gill of Gill Marines said the work to make the ship appealing is going on. "We are waiting for the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) for laying an approach road. Once the road is complete, people will visit the ship. If APTDC speeds up the work, the ship will be converted into a floating restaurant in another six to seven months," he added.

As per the plans, the 79-meter-long ship has two cargo holds and both would be developed as restaurants. One will have a sky roof and glass dome with air conditioning. There will be an air-conditioned restaurant also inside the ship. The ship will be remodeled and developed with recreation components at the cost of Rs 10.5 crore. Once the project is completed, entry ticket prices will be fixed.

Chairman, APTDC, Vara Prasad Reddy Arimanda said the proposed project Floating Restaurant may be further delayed as the business-related matters with Gill Marines are yet finalized. "We will sort out the matters to speed up the project in the coming days," Reddy added.

It may be recalled that members of the Telugu Yuvatha, a wing of TDP, took a strong objection to convert the ship into a floating restaurant citing it may impact the environment including the aquatic species near the beach. They demanded the removal of the ship from the site to protect the environment.

Important Points:

MV MAA broke anchor due to high winds and ran aground near Tenneti Park when it was on its way to deliver fly ash. The project cost for the floating restaurant is Rs10.5 crore.
