Chris Froome Israel Premier Tech

Chris Froome has been confirmed on the Israel-Premier Tech line-up for the 2022 Tour de France. The British rider returned to the race last year for the first time since 2018. That year Froome finished 3rd with teammate Geraint Thomas on the top step of the podium. Whilst in good form the following year, Froome suffered a serious crash whilst warming up at the Dauphine. For many, it might have been a career-ender but the 4-time Tour de France winner has clawed his way back into contention for the biggest race on the calendar again.

Riding the 2022 tour de France will be Chris Froome’s 10th appearance at the Tour. The first was way back in 2008, racing for South African team Barloworld along with future teammate Geraint Thomas. After 6 podiums (and 4 wins) in 7 editions, the crash derailed the streak. The 2014 Tour de France was the only gap. Last year Froome finished 133rd overall, more than 4 hours behind winner Tadej Pogacar.

There were doubts that Chris Froome would make the line-up this year. Now 37, he admitted there were doubts due to the ongoing fitness struggles as a result of the major crash. Froome has previously said that he is unable to produce the same power from both legs and is biased to one side. There was some hope when Froome finished 11th at the Classic Alpes-Maritimes but then had to withdraw from the Criterium du Dauphine with 2 stages left because of illness.

“I’ve worked exceptionally hard this year and I’m looking forward to giving it my all,” Froome said in a statement. “We’ve got a great group of riders in the lineup and we can’t wait for the battle to begin in Copenhagen.” Chris Froome

Israel-Premier Tech will also bring fellow veterans Michael Woods and Jakob Fuglsang. Both riders don’t have the greatest of history at the Tour de France, with Fuglsang’s 7th in 2013 their best GC result. Neither has won a stage at the Tour either.

Chris Froome set for 2022 race debut in Italy

The four-time Tour de France winner will return to racing at the Coppi e Bartali next week

Chris Froome

Chris Froome is ready to make a racing return in Italy next week after a knee injury delayed his season start, his Israel-Premier Tech team confirmed on Saturday.

The four-time Tour de France winner will make his 2022 debut at the five-stage Coppi e Bartali race on Tuesday March 22, having worked his way back up fitness at team training camps in the early part of the year.

Froome last raced at the Italian Classics in the autumn last year, although failed to finish all three in which he competed including the year's final Monument, Il Lombardia.

In January he confirmed he had suffered a setback due to a tendon injury on his right knee, which he described as a "setback".

Froome explained: “It wasn’t an ideal start to the year, to be dealing with an injury, but I’ve worked hard to get my fitness back on track. Fortunately, it was only a minor setback. I’m looking forward to taking on the 2022 season with my first race being Coppi e Bartali. It’s always a great experience to race in Italy and I can’t wait to get out there with my team-mates.”

The 36-year-old has struggled to show signs of his previous prowess following a horrific crash at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné, which left him with numerous severe injuries.

The most decorated Grand Tour rider of the last 10 years, Froome won four Tours de France, two Vuelta a España titles, and a Giro d'Italia in a dominant spell between 2011 and 2018.

He rode his final Grand Tour for Team Ineos (previously Sky) at the Vuelta in 2020 before moving to Israel Start-Up Nation for 2021, with whom he made a return to the Tour, which he completed.

Froome's team said his further 2022 race programme would be decided in the following weeks after his return at Coppi e Bartali.

‘I have no intentions of stopping:’ Chris Froome Confirms he will Race in 2024, and Puts Target on Tour de France Return

Comments suggest four-time yellow jersey will remain at israel premier tech and froome is hopeful tweaks to riding position will relieve lower back pain..

Chris Froome confirmed he will keep racing in 2024, and a return to the Tour de France  is at the center of his plans.

Despite a rough and tumble campaign marked by exclusion from the 2023 Tour squad, the four-time Tour winner said he’s committed to racing next season.

“Even though I am not up there winning like I am used to doing before my crash, but I am still enjoying racing my bike,” he told FloBikes . “I have no intentions of stopping.”

Speaking to FloBikes at the Tour of Hainan in China this weekend, Froome confirmed that he’s going to continue with Israel Premier Tech for at least the 2024 season.

Froome was back to racing this week in China in his first competition in late July since being snubbed at the 2023 Tour by Israel Premier Tech .

His absence triggered questions about his future not only with the team but also in the sport.

As the most successful grand tour rider active in the bunch right now, with seven grand tour victories, Froome continues to struggle to find the winning form ever since his devastating crash ahead of the 2019 Tour de France.

“It’s been a difficult season for me this year,” Froome said from China. “Obviously having worked hard to try to get into the Tour and missing out on a that. I had to reset a little bit and go back to the drawing board on a few things.”

Froome tweaks position: ‘I was far off from my previous position in the Sky/Ineos days’

Chris Froome

The 38-year-old revealed that he tweaked his riding position and returned to a setup that was similar to what he raced on during his golden years at Team Sky/Ineos from 2011 to 2018.

“I made a few changes to my bike position. I found that I was quite far off from my previous position in the Sky/Ineos days, and I am feeling much better on the bike,” he said in China.

“The biggest thing was I was struggling with my lower back before the Tour. I had a lot of lower back pain,” Froome said. “I found the cause of that was how I was sitting on the bike. Somehow changing teams, my position changed somewhat. I am finally sitting back in my old position again.”

Froome hadn’t raced since the Czech Tour in late July, and will race the Japan Cup later this month to close out 2023.

“I put in some good work before coming here. I got a little bit ill on the travel coming over here. I enjoyed training and to finish this last part of the season,” he said. “I am really looking forward to see where I can get to.”

Froome crashed over the weekend on a descent, but was not seriously injured. He finished 63rd overall behind GC winner Oscar Sevilla (Team Medellín-EPM).

Tour de France at center of ambitions: ‘I am going to make that my focus’

froome tour 2022

For 2024, Froome said it’s all about returning to the Tour de France.

He’s the first rider who’s won four yellow jerseys but did not go on to win a fifth one.

Froome admits he won’t be challenging the likes of Tadej Pogačar or Jonas Vingegaard any time soon, but he still believes he can impact the Tour.

First he needs to earn his spot.

This year, Israel Premier Tech left him off the eight-rider selection, and both sides traded barbs publicly, but Froome refused to make further comment.

Instead, he says he’s already focusing on next season and punching his ticket back to the Tour.

“Very much so,” he said when asked if he wants to return to the Tour. “I am going to make that my focus for next year.

“I hope to have a proper buildup in the first part of the season going toward the Tour, and make that my big objective,” Froome said.

“I am going to target a lot more the week-long stage races. Maybe stay away from some of the one-day races,” he said. “Some stage races with back-to-back mountain stages would be a good test for me and see where I am for the Tour.”

Injuries and fallout from his 2019 crash at the Critérium du Dauphiné continue to dog him, but he insists his passion pushes him on.

Froome hasn’t won a race since the 2018 Giro d’Italia, but he still believes.

“For me personally, I just love racing, and I love doing what I am doing,” he said.

Chris Froome was once the dominant force at the Tour de France, but after suffering serious injuries in a crash at the Criterium du Dauphine in 2019, his objectives have changed. Now 38, Froome has spoken about wanting to ride until he is 40 and also his hope to win another stage at the Tour de France. He has also given his thoughts on the "very impressive" Tadej Pogacar.

‘I’d like to get back’ - Tour de France return remains the goal for Chris Froome

Four-time winner lines out at Tirreno-Adriatico for his first WorldTour appearance since April of last year

Chris Froome 's presence at Tirreno-Adriatico marks his first appearance at WorldTour level since April of last year and the Briton insists his focus is still on returning to the Tour de France in 2024.

Froome was left out of the Israel-Premier Tech Tour squad last season after calling it his “ultimate goal.” while his team justified their selection by describing the eight riders selected as being “best suited to fulfilling our performance objectives”.

It’s been a long journey back to try to reach top form for Froome ever since his horrific life-threatening crash at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2019 , but the 38-year-old still hopes he can make it back to the race he won four times and dominated in the 2010s.

“The goal for me is to try and get to the Tour in the best shape possible this year,” Froome told Cyclingnews before stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Chris Froome: There are no problems between me and Sylvan Adams Froome aims to set up Cycling Academy in Kenya, find Tour de France 'magic' in 2024 Chris Froome intent on seeing out contract with Israel-Premier Tech

“First of all, get to the Tour after having missed out last year. I'd really like to get back there again this year.”

Aside from 2019, when he fractured his femur, elbow and ribs, 2023 was the only year Froome failed to start a Grand Tour since 2008, when he made his debut at the Tour.

Tirreno-Adriatico forms part of Froome’s build-up to a possible 11th appearance at the three-week race, with each appearance from now until the start in June in Florence all important for Israel-Premier Tech’s selection process.

The Brit was called up late as a replacement for Derek Gee who broke his collarbone at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in February.

“Looking forward to getting some WorldTour racing in the legs. This is the first WorldTour event I'm doing this year after Rwanda and some time at altitude as well,” Froome said.

“So just looking forward to getting back into it again and continuing a steady build towards the Tour.

“It basically comes down to team selection, and I imagine looking at the stage races building up to the Tour will be part of that. So this is this is where it starts.”

Froome has faced public backlash for his performances from team owner Sylvan Adams during his time at Israel-Premier Tech, with the billionaire calling him “not value for money” during last year's Tour.

Adams signed Froome on a five-year contract from Ineos (Team Sky) in 2021 with the hope he could rediscover his form and win a fifth Tour, but Froome has rarely come close to his previous levels.

He's had moments close to finding success again, with third on L'Alpe d'Huez at the 2022 Tour behind Tom Pidcock, but his last pro win came at the 2018 Giro when he audaciously attacked 80km from the line to snatch overall victory on stage 19..

“How could we say we had value for money? We signed Chris to be the leader of our Tour de France team and he’s not even here so that cannot be considered value for money,” Adams told Cycling Weekly .

“This is not a PR exercise. Chris isn’t a symbol, he isn’t a PR tool, he’s supposed to be our leader at the Tour de France and he’s not even here, so no I couldn’t say he’s value for money.”

Froome told Cyclingnews in November that he has no intention of ending his time in the sport before at least seeing out the two remaining years on his contract, ensuring there was no bad blood with Adams.

"I signed a five-year contract when I joined. I still feel like there’s more in the legs and I want to go out having given it my all. I’m not going to give up on it," Froome said.
