Campers That Fit In standard Garage

8 Great Campers That Fit In a Garage And You Can Stand Up In

Many campers turn to RVs for the ability to bring the comforts of home with you while you adventure in the great outdoors.

For a lot of people, this includes an RV that they can stand up and stretch out inside.

.ugb-cee8c07 .ugb-blockquote__item{border-radius:0px !important}.ugb-cee8c07 .ugb-blockquote__quote{width:20px !important;height:20px !important}.ugb-cee8c07 .ugb-blockquote__text{font-size:20px !important}@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-cee8c07 > .ugb-inner-block > .ugb-block-content > *{padding-top:40px !important;padding-bottom:40px !important;padding-right:40px !important;padding-left:40px !important}} Since we are talking about a metal-on-metal connection, a little grease can be a good idea. Though the best type of lubrication, how to apply it, and how often to apply it can be a little bit of a gray area. At the same time, some people are hotly against the idea of greasing the hitch ball as it can lead to other possible complications.

At the same time, the elements can be brutal, and while your RV is meant to be weather-resistant while you are out camping, it will nonetheless suffer greater wear and tear as well as depreciation if it’s left in the great outdoors full-time.

This is especially true for the wintertime in northern states. That’s probably why so many passionate RV owners choose to store their RVs indoors when not in use.

Though for a taller RV, this might mean keeping it in a somewhat expensive RV storage garage, which can really drive up the cost of ownership.

Though wouldn’t it be nice, if you could store your RV in an extra stall in your standard residential garage?

With interior height a strong consideration, and the ability to store then RV in a standard garage bay in high demand, we decided to move these two circles close together to create our own sort of VEN diagram.

This resulted in a list of campers that you can stand up in, and will also conveniently fit in your garage.

List Of RVs You Can Stand Up In & Will Fit In A Typical Garage

8 stand up camper that fits in your garage.

While looking for the best RVs you can stand up in and store in your garage, we tried to cast a broad net.

This included popup campers, A-frames, and other expandable models.

The end result was this impressive list of campers that are just small enough to fit in a typical garage bay, while still offering a large enough interior for an average person to stand up in.

1. The 2021 Aliner – Expedition

Aliner – Expedition

As an A-Frame camper with two dormers, the central peak of the Aliner Expedition offers just over 5’7” of headroom to let a person stand up and stretch. There’s also a nice amount of headroom created by the dormers when seated.

All in an RV with a total length of exactly 18-feet from the bumper to the tongue, which means you can park it in your garage bay without having to turn it slightly at an angle to make sure the tongue doesn’t lick the hardware on the backside of your garage door.

2. Happier Camper HC

Happier Camper HC

This is one of the rare travel trailers that you can stand up in and still be able to fit in a standard residential garage bay.

It has a modular interior that in the typical configuration gives you a floor to ceiling height of just 5’5”, though you can squeeze out more if you work directly with the manufacturer.

When you include the tongue of the trailer it measures 18-feet long and has a garage-door-snug 8-feet of height with the standard suspension and ground clearance.

3. The Scamp 13

The Scamp 13

The Scamp 13 is a fiberglass shell travel trailer that has an intensely loyal following in the upper Midwest.

Part of its enduring popularity might be linked to the fact that it has a length of just 13-feet and an interior height that measures at a maximum of 6’3” with a total exterior height of 7’6”, which should just fit through a standard garage door.

4. The Taxa Outdoors Cricket Overland

Taxa Outdoors Cricket Overland

An increasingly popular type of expandable “Pop Up” camper the Taxa Outdoors has a ceiling section that rises up with canvas sidewalls. In this portion of what Taxa calls a “Habitat” a tall person can enjoy up to 6’10” of room to stretch out. Though the rest of the camper’s body is only 4’2” high. Taxa specifically designed the Cricket Overland with a short tongue.

While this can make it a little bit tricky to back it up without jackknifing, it does give it a total length of just 15-feet, and a closed exterior height of 7’2” which will fit into most residential garage bays.

5. The Safari Condo Alto

The Safari Condo Alto

The Safari Condo Alto takes the concept of height adjustability and use of space to a whole new level. This is thanks to an expandable hard roof as well as an adjustable suspension system.

At its most compact the entire rig is just 17-feet long and 83.5-inches tall. When you expand the curved roof and set it up at camp, it offers over 6-feet of ceiling height in the main part of the living area.

6. NuCamp TAB 320 U

NuCamp TAB 320 U

The NuCamp TAB 320 U is a rare teardrop camper that boasts an interior height of 69-inches, which will let a 5’7” person stand up. Though the exterior height of 93-inches will just fit inside an 8-foot tall garage door frame.

All on a trailer that only measures in at just over 15 feet long. Just bear in mind that the interior measurement is for floor plans that don’t have a bed in the highest portion of the interior ceiling.

7. The Winnebago Minnie 2201MB Travel Trailer

Winnebago Minnie 2201MB

The Minnie is one of Winnebagos’ most popular travel trailer platforms. It has varying floor plans. Some of the smaller will fit in a commercial garage or a mechanic bay.

Though with an exterior length of 26’10” and an exterior height of 10’7″ it might be too long and tall for a typical two stall residential garage.

If you do have an oversized garage or a she that can accommodate it, you will be treated to a travel trailer with a 6’8” interior height. This is more than enough room to accommodate a family, with all the bathroom and water storage facilities that have made it such a popular travel trailer.

8. The Meerkat Travel Trailer

Meerkat Travel Trailer

The Meerkat is a great compact travel trailer made with an expanding roof. When it’s closed it has an exterior height of just 77”, which will fit in most residential garages.

When it’s expanded the roof height goes up to 88”, and it offers an interior height of 73” which will let just about anyone under 6 feet tall stand up comfortably.

The overall length of just 13-feet makes it easy to fit into most garages with room to spare for storing other essential gear around the tongue of the trailer.

9. The Little Guys TAG Trailer

Little Guys TAG Trailer

the TAG is one of Little Guys Trailers’ most popular teardrop campers. It offers a total length of just 162” which is just over 13 feet long. The total exterior height is 72” which will easily slide through just about any residential garage door or storage shed.

The interior itself is snug by travel trailer standards, but when you consider the 47” ceiling height it’s downright spacious for a teardrop camper. All in a model that weighs only 2,200-pounds, which is light enough for most mid-size SUVs to tow.

Dealing With The Dimensions Of A Typical Garage

The first thing we needed to wrap our heads around was the size of a garage bay.

While there are some people who are blessed with a cavernous garage, the average for most American homes is a garage bay that measures about 9 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

Next, we took into account the dimensions of the door you need to get the RV to pass through.

When opened to the maximum, the typical garage door is 8 feet wide and roughly 8 feet tall, with a small margin of the door getting in the way.

So we limited our search to campers that had an exterior dimension of less than 8-feet or less and a total length of less than 20-feet.

The Interior Height Of An RV

With all apologies to extraordinarily tall people, the average height of a male in the United States is 5’9” with females averaging 5’4”.

So, we targeted RVs that were within an inch or two of 5-feet 9-inches tall when they were set up for a comfortable camp living.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can i store my travel trailer indoors.

Almost all travel trailers are too large to store in a typical residential garage.

If you want to store it indoors, you might be able to find a seasonal storage company that will offer you large garage space.

You might also be able to contract out a warehouse area from a local RV dealership.

Another option is to buy a carport tent to keep your travel trailer on your property.

They are relatively inexpensive and offer more interior storage space as well as a larger door opening.

Just make sure to check with the local municipality, or homeowners association to make sure a tented carport is allowed.

Will A Campervan Fit In A Garage?

Most camper vans or Class B motorhomes are more than 8-feet tall, with most being 9 to 10 feet high.

This makes it hard to fit them through most residential garage doors, which measure in at just 8-feet tall.

Though if you have a particularly tall garage door, you might be able to fit a small campervan or touring coach into your residential garage.

Though you would be wise to recruit a spotter when doing so.

Will A Travel Trailer Fit In A Standard Garage?

Most modern-day travel trailers won’t fit in a standard garage. The suspension system and roof heights tend to push it over 8 feet in height.

Then you have the problem of the tongue of the trailer frame sticking out several feet beyond the shell of the camper body.

Though there are a few older models and compact new models like the Meerkat that will just make it.

How To Know The Garage Size For My RV?

If you have an existing RV and you are thinking about storing it in the garage for the first time, then it comes down to good old fashioned measuring tape.

Make sure to take into account every inch from the taillight of the back bumper to the very tip of the tongue.

Then add another 6 to 12 inches to give yourself some wiggle room.

If you are thinking about buying an RV and you want to make sure it will fit in your garage, you need to start by measuring the entryway to your garage door, which will typically be about 8 feet high.

Though some people have oversized or extra-tall doors. You can then measure the total length from the back of the garage door when it is shut, taking into account any hardware components. Measure from there to the back wall.

You can then compare these figures to the RV’s stated exterior height and total length.

What RVs Tend To Fit In Standard 2 Car Garages?

Tear drop campers are the most likely type of RV to fit in a standard two-car garage.

This is followed up by popup campers that have a reasonably short tongue length. A lot of travel trailers are too long or too tall to fit in a standard 2 car garage, though

What Size Camper Will Fit In A Standard Residential Garage?

To meet the restrictions of a typical residential garage a camper needs to be 8 feet high or less, and shorter than 20-feet long.

This will give you enough room to fit it through the garage door as well as enough length to fit in the garage bay.

Though it’s always a good idea to measure for yourself as the trim work on some garage doors can reduce the height and the hardware on the backside of the door, or any finish on the rear wall of the bay can also reduce the length.

Do Pop Up Campers Fit In A Garage?

Most modest size popup campers will fit in a standard residential garage when they are closed or “Popped Down.”

Though some with an extra-long tongue or a bumper extension might push the total length of your garage bay.

So, make to measure the total length of your garage bay from the back of the garage door when it is closed to the rear wall of the garage.

Conclusion:

While there are only a few RV trailers that are low enough to fit in a standard residential garage, and still offer enough room to stand up in.

At the same time, there are still a fair number of pop-up campers that are short enough to back into a garage bay with a reasonable amount of room between the bumper and the tongue and the powerful moving hardware on the back of your garage door.

If you want an innovative travel trailer that you can adjust to fit in your standard residential garage, then the Safari Condo Alto might be the best standup camper to meet your needs.

Its adjustable height and contours offer up a lot of living space in one compact package.

If you are content with a popup camper, and you only need enough headroom for a good stretch on a rainy day, then the Taxa Outdoors Cricket Overland might be the best standup camper to fit in your garage.

As an added bonus, it has the outdoor ruggedness to let you take it just about anywhere.

RVs come in all shapes and sizes. You might not like the idea of having to store a camper at all, however, campers that fit in your garage do make it easier.

Small campers are a great place to stay when visiting friends and it has enough space to get away from your hosts when you need some private time. It can also double as guest quarters when you have company.

On the negative side, these will probably be too small for full-time living, and you will still have to maintain and winterize your small camper. Also, if you don’t want to maneuver a large RV, pulling in and out of gas stations or navigating through large cities can be easy.

Also, don’t forget, that the smaller your RV, the more likely you will find a space at a popular campground. If a small RV is your way of enjoying a camping lifestyle, then read ahead to find the best campers that can fit in your garage.

How Tall Are RVs?

The height of your RV is extremely important to know. You don’t want to be one of those people who ruined their air conditioner because they couldn’t fit under a bridge. It’s so important that you will want to post it near the driver’s seat. Here are a few standard heights of different types of RVs.

Class A RVs are the big daddies of RVs. They can reach up to 13 feet high. Most Class B vans will run around 9 feet high. A typical Class C is around 10 feet, and most travel trailers and 5 th wheels will be in the neighborhood of 10-11 feet with an occasional 12-footer popping up. Most states have a height limit of 13.5 feet.

Of course, none of these will fit in your average garage so let’s take a look at the small RVs such as pop-ups and teardrops. Pop-ups will be around 4-5 feet in height, except a few high wall models and teardrops are the same. Your average garage door height is 7 feet—a perfect match for these smaller RVs.

Is It Okay to Store Your Camper Outside in the Winter?

While you might see many campers parked outside in the winter, it’s probably not the best option for keeping your RV secure and ready for the next season. When your RV is outside in variable weather, you can risk causing long-term damage to your RV if you don’t store it correctly.

Cracked or broken pipes are a possibility if you leave water in the RV. You can have roof damage from the weight of snow on the roof. You can also get pests such as mice or damaging bugs. Tires are also vulnerable to UV rays or fluctuations in temperature.

It may cost more for indoor or covered storage, but you will get more life out of your vehicle. This is a huge plus for campers that fit in your garage!

Are RV Covers Worth It?

RV covers are definitely worth the money if you choose to store your RV outside. You can also add tire covers, to completely keep it under cover.

These are good for keeping the elements off your roof. They can, however, trap moisture underneath and prevent airflow. Make sure you choose a cover with proper ventilation.

Final Thoughts About Campers That Fit in a Garage

Storing a camper in your garage is a great option if you choose a small trailer that will fit. Most garages are 12 feet wide and 22 feet deep which will fit all of our selected trailers very easily. The average garage door height is around 7 feet.

If you store your camper in your garage it is protected from the elements and protected from thieves. You can access the RV any time you want and make sure there are no issues that will cause damage such as pests. You can also use your camper as an extra guest room when the company comes.

Along with fitting in your garage, small campers are easy to tow with a car, are very maneuverable, and each year manufacturers come out with more amenities that make traveling in a small RV a breeze.

Choosing the Right Travel Trailer for Your Garage

To pick a trailer for your garage, look at its height, width, weight, length, and features. For garage storage, focus on the height and width to avoid damage when moving the trailer.

Height and Width : Measure your garage door's height and width. Add 2-3 inches to these measurements for clearance. Consider your garage ceiling height, and if it's sloped, a lower-profile trailer might be necessary.

Also, account for any beams or obstructions in your garage. Knowing the maximum height and width helps narrow down your choices.

Weight Considerations : The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) represents the combined weight of the trailer, cargo, and fluids. For lightweight garage storage, aim for a GVWR of less than 3,500 pounds.

Features : When selecting a travel trailer, it's important to decide on the features you desire, like a bathroom, kitchen, or slide-out living space. Also, consider lightweight and durable construction, accessibility and stability when parked.

Consider key features like an exterior shower, evaluate storage by checking refrigerator size, and assess sleeping capacity. A list of must-have features will streamline your search for a travel trailer that fits well in your garage.

I feel you did not consider the height of an average garage.

indeed the height was not considered. Average garage is 7′ high and if you have an old flip-up style garage like mine, that’s another 3″ of clearance I need to get it through the opening –and maybe more depending on slope of driveway. Most of these won’t work in that case.

Travel Trailers that Fit in a Garage

All of our reviews are based on exhaustive research, industry experience, and whenever possible, hands-on testing. When you make a purchase using one of our chosen links we’ll get a small percentage of the proceeds. This supports the site and keeps Jeffsetter running. You can read more here .

Storing an RV is often one of the most challenging aspects of owning one, so you may be wondering if there are any travel trailers that fit in a garage. Knowing where you plan on keeping your RV before you purchase one is a good idea, especially when you consider the fact that winter storage of your RV is likely best for its overall maintenance and care.

Whether you plan on storing your RV in an attached residential garage, a carport, or on your street, there are a few things to consider before you purchase something. But what might those considerations be, and how can you find a travel trailer that fits in a garage without too much fuss?

In this article, we will go over everything you need to know about storing a travel trailer in a garage, including giving you some options that are compact and convenient enough to keep in the average garage or carport. Protecting your RV from the elements is important, especially when you aren’t using your RV. Here’s everything you need to know about travel trailer garage storage.

Types of Garages for Storing Your RV

If you don’t currently have a garage you may be seeking some options for RV storage, including some potential carport or bay storage. While it will depend on your property and the potential alterations that you can do to it, there are many different ways to store an RV safely and efficiently .

Here are various types of garages for storing your new travel trailer.

Residential Attached Garage

If you’re lucky enough to have a residential attached garage, this is a great location to store your RV if you don’t keep a car or other vehicle in it. Depending on whether you have a single, double, or even larger type of attached garage, the average garage measurements begin at 12 by 20 ft.

Many residential garages vary in terms of their height, especially when you consider the fact that some garages have lofted or overhead storage options. However, the average residential garage is anywhere from 18 to 25 ft tall, so keep all of these measurements in mind as you shop. This is the first place to begin when it comes to finding a travel trailer that will fit in your residential attached garage!

Again, you may have a double or even triple-car garage, leading to a much larger interior space. This likely won’t affect the overall height of your garage, but every residential attached garage is unique. I highly recommend measuring your own space so that you know your precise dimensions and can shop with this knowledge in mind.

Residential Detached Garage

Just like a residential attached garage, detached garages offer a safe and secure place to keep your RV, no matter the season. The dimensions of a residential detached garage are similar if not identical to the attached garage measurements. However, you may have a detached garage with a bit more height given that it isn’t attached to your residential home and doesn’t need to match that particular roofline.

You may find that your detached garage is more or less convenient when it comes to parking your RV, as the location of the storage area might be easier to back into. However, detached garages do not offer as much security as an attached garage, and they do not offer as much convenience.

Your detached garage may also be less protected from the elements compared to your attached garage, so keep this in mind if you live in an area that experiences freezing weather during the winter. Winterizing your travel trailer is a must , and this is especially true if your travel trailer storage area gets below freezing!

Typically simple in construction and attached in some way to a residential home, carports make excellent options for storing a travel trailer. However, these areas are typically open and unsecured, which is definitely something to keep in mind if you are worried about protecting your personal property.

Speaking of open, keeping a travel trailer in a carport likely means that it is visible at all times. If you are looking for an option that doesn’t require you to stare down your travel trailer day in and day out, you may want to find a more enclosed option. This also speaks to security and keeping your personal possessions more private. You may want your RV to be less visible to avoid potential theft.

Carports are useful for keeping rain, snow, and debris off of your travel trailer. You may have a carport that is located behind a gate or a fence, likely giving you a bit more security than average. At the end of the day, a carport is simply a semi-enclosed area to keep your vehicles, and the average carport is likely large enough to keep most travel trailers in without much hassle.

Awning or Portable Garage

If you don’t have anything but a driveway, you can always purchase an awning or a portable garage for your RV. These options are unique in that you can find just about any shape or size to fit your rig. It’s also convenient that you can break them down and set them up when you need them, though most are designed to be a fairly permanent option for your home.

If you don’t have any other storage options for your RV, purchasing an awning or portable garage is an ideal solution. However, it’s important to note that these can cost a fair amount of money. If your main concern is protecting your RV from the elements, you may want to just purchase an RV cover instead of an entire awning or portable garage.

While RV covers have their own issues and need to be set up properly in order to work, they are significantly cheaper than an awning or a portable garage. This is especially true if you are shopping for a carport or driveway cover that is metal and more permanent, as these can often cost over $1,000.

Barn or Outbuilding

If you have a barn or a number of larger outbuildings on your property, you may consider simply storing your travel trailer or RV in one of those. While this is likely more complicated than you are hoping for, converting a barn or an outbuilding into an RV storage space can be one of the best options for storing a travel trailer.

Not only will you be able to store your travel trailer in a location that is secure and discreet, but you may also take advantage of the opportunity to convert the entire area into your travel trailer workshop. RVs need consistent maintenance and having a dry location to work in is a luxury most RV owners don’t get.

Again, this may be outside your budget and not something you’re interested in doing, but if you have any outbuildings you aren’t using, why not store a travel trailer in one?

Storing Your Travel Trailer in a Driveway or on the Street

At the end of the day, you can only store your travel trailer in your own driveway or even on your residential street. Keep in mind that your travel trailer will be uncovered and left secure with either of these options. However, these options are also free! Your driveway is an especially good place to keep a travel trailer if you have one, as this is out of the way and on your own property.

Keeping your RV or travel trailer on the street outside of your house may seem like a good option at first, but it all depends on where you live. Security is very important to keep in mind for this option, as your travel trailer is out in the open, likely sitting for months at a time. Plus, keeping an RV on a public street isn’t always legal, depending on where you live.

You may also run into the nosy neighbor that doesn’t like that you’re keeping your RV outside of your house, on the street where they might have a problem with it. Travel trailers can also get in the way of garbage and mail services. Unfortunately, given that it is technically public property, if you live in an area that doesn’t appreciate where you are keeping your travel trailer, you will likely have to move it.

Types of Travel Trailers that Fit in a Garage

Not every type of RV will fit in a garage, especially travel trailers. Fifth wheels will not fit in the average storage area, given their height and overall size. However, there are some types of travel trailers that will indeed fit in a garage. Here are some options for you to consider.

Pop-Up Trailers

Relatively inexpensive and surprisingly large enough for the whole family, pop-up trailers are a great option for storing in a garage. Arguably, pop-up trailers were invented to assist RV owners in RV storage solutions, given the fact that these travel trailers collapse when not in use.

You can find many different types of pop-up trailers, but the main identifier is a trailer that has the ability to transform and get smaller when not in use. Pop-up trailers can be made from fiberglass, but they typically have tent or fabric materials involved to help keep them compact. Some pop-up trailers are simply tents on wheels, something that may interest you if you are seeking an extremely lightweight option as well.

The good news is, the average pop-up travel trailer is no more than 15 ft long and 5-6 ft tall when fully collapsed. You may even find shorter options, giving you more peace of mind when you park it in your garage. There’s nothing more stressful than getting close to hitting the top of your garage door as your backing in!

A-Frame Trailers

Depending on the manufacturer, you may be able to find an A-frame travel trailer that fits in a garage or carport. Most of these unique trailers are designed to collapse when on the road, typically at a convenient height of 5-6 feet tall. This makes them aerodynamic as well as easy to store.

Once you reach camp or wherever you plan on setting up your travel trailer, it is designed to open up. This style of camper has a taller ceiling on average compared to other pop-up options, given the fact that the A-frame shape adds a bit of extra height. However, most of these travel trailers are fairly compact and small overall, likely not ideal for the average family.

Having a pop-up option with hard sides and a fiberglass roof may be appealing to those of you seeking a more durable pop-up option. While they may be more expensive, you’ll have better insulation and long-term use from a travel trailer with hard sides than one with fabric sides.

Teardrop Trailers

While some teardrop travel trailers can get a little tall for the average garage, this may be a great option for a solo adventurer or couple. Teardrop travel trailers are unique in that they offer RV owners a comfortable sleeping area inside, with an outdoor kitchen typically located on the back of the rig.

There are also a number of teardrop travel trailer options that are lighter than two thousand pounds , making this an easy RV to tow as well as store. However, keep in mind that most teardrop trailers are too small to accommodate a bathroom or a proper dining or living area. Some options may convert to give you as many RV amenities as possible, but these rigs will not be as developed as a standard travel trailer.

The shape of the travel trailers can make some of them aerodynamic and easy to tow, something that may interest those of you worried about your gas mileage. Plus, many teardrop travel trailers offer pop-out elements or unique storage solutions, offering you much more space than you likely assumed!

Standard Travel Trailers

Depending on the size of your garage or RV storage area, you may be able to fit a standard-size travel trailer in your chosen location. However, it’s important to know the measurements of your desired travel trailer as well as the location in which you plan on storing it. Some RV manufacturers are more efficient in their measurements than others, and you don’t want to mix up an interior living length with an exterior length!

When it comes to standard travel trailer measurements, the average width of these RVs is anywhere from 7 to 8 ft across. Height also varies, but you are likely looking at an option that is over 10 ft tall, with roughly 6 ft of interior height. Finally, length is the most variable factor on a standard travel trailer, as this is where RV manufacturers add square footage.

Depending on what you are looking for, standard travel trailers range in length from 13 ft to well over 35 ft. Obviously, a 40 ft long travel trailer won’t fit in the average garage or storage area, so make sure you know exactly what you are looking for and what you can feasibly fit before you fall in love!

If you’ve taken your measurements for whatever you plan on storing your travel trailer, it’s time to check out your possible options. While unique and unlikely to sleep more than 4 individuals, all of these travel trailers should fit in a garage, carport, or even your converted barn!

Let’s take a closer look at these options now.

Best for Residential Garages: Safari Condo Alto

  • Teardrop shape is aerodynamic and unique
  • Lightweight model makes it easy to tow without sacrificing interior space
  • Unique in its design and offers interior design options
  • Fairly expensive for a travel trailer, especially one of this size

Teardrop-shaped and complete with a unique roof that allows more light into the space, the Alto by Safari Condo is a great choice for storing in your residential garage. The dimensions should fit in just about any standard attached or detached garage, depending on your home. Ranging anywhere from $50-55k, this option is a bit more expensive than average but has a lot to offer.

Safari Condo offers a few different options in terms of its convertible and collapsible travel trailer choices, but the smallest Alto option measures 83 inches when closed. When you reach camp, the unique roofline of this particular travel trailer extends to over 100 inches tall, giving you plenty of interior headroom and living space.

This is a fantastic teardrop travel trailer for those of you seeking room for up to four people . In addition, all amenities are located inside the travel trailer, which means you are protected from the elements when you want to cook breakfast or dinner. Plus, the retractable and extendable roof line of this RV adds more windows than any other option on this list.

Aerodynamics and lightweight, the Alto is just over 1800 lb dry. This means you can easily tow it using a variety of SUVs and small vehicles. The interior offers plenty of convertible furniture and seating arrangements, giving you enough space to sleep a small family, so long as you’re comfortable being cozy!

With multiple sizes as well as interior design choices, this travel trailer is great for those of you seeking something that is more customizable than other options. Perhaps you want a bit more space in the dining area, or maybe you would like more length on this RV so that you can bring your pets.

Regardless of what you are looking for, Safari Condo likely has a travel trailer option for you. However, keep in mind that this option isn’t exactly budget-friendly, especially when you consider the overall interior living space compared to the cost!

Best for Carports: Coachmen Clipper

  • Very budget-friendly for all RV consumers
  • Compact frame expands to sleep up to 5 people
  • Optional tent additions so that you can bring even more people with you
  • Not very many bells and whistles, but you have the basics

If you’re concerned that the last option wasn’t exactly budget-friendly, The Coachmen Clipper is a compact travel trailer that can fit in most locations, including carports. Offering a traditional tent pop-up as well as a teardrop-shaped option with pop-up elements, the Clipper is unique and under $20k. Let’s take a closer look.

Depending on the option you choose, the Clipper weighs anywhere from 1400 to 2500 lb. While the larger options are a bit heavier, this is a lightweight travel trailer and should be fairly aerodynamic when on the road. Plus, the dimensions are ideal for fitting into just about any garage, with their pop-up option under 5 ft tall when collapsed.

The Clipper also has pop-up elements on the sides of the rig, offering you more length depending on the model you choose. These elements are fabric or tent-based, but they offer RV customers large sleeping areas that are heated to keep you protected depending on the time of year. This means that you can also likely sleep up to 5 people in the Clipper, depending on which floor plan you go with.

All of the kitchens are indoors for this particular travel trailer, and some floor plans even offer a portable cassette toilet. There may be an outdoor shower option depending on which model speaks to you, but this is a more bare-bones approach to camping compared to the average, standard travel trailer.

Another potential benefit to owning a Clipper is the fact that you can purchase an additional tent attachment so that you can sleep more people on your camping trips. This option attaches to the outside of your RV and allows you a bit more protection should you want to enjoy the great outdoors or sleep anyone in a tent outside.

However, given the budget-friendly nature of this particular option, there aren’t too many bells and whistles. The interior design is fairly blase, but this is a great choice for those of you to want to sleep more people and reconnect with nature!

Most Compact: OPUS OP LITE

  • Rugged and built to go anywhere you want
  • Comfortably sleeps two adults inside with two more people outside
  • Exterior kitchen and expandable elements make this one convenient
  • No bathroom amenities

If you have a particularly tight garage, you may want to check out the OPUS OP LITE for your space. Another pop-up style of a travel trailer, the OP LITE offers its customers a huge expandable tent space. Let’s check this cool rig out!

Let’s start with the measurements, as these are important if you want to store this travel trailer in a garage or other area of your home. This pop-up option measures under 6 ft across and 4.5 ft tall when collapsed. The overall length is 17 ft, making this a perfect option for the average residential storage space.

However, the expanding capabilities of this trailer are immense, with an interior height of 10 ft when opened. There are also expandable elements on the sides, giving you more interior living space. In fact, this travel trailer can sleep up to 2 people inside with an optional tent attachment to sleep a family of 4.

Speaking of expanding, OPUS has a particular design for their pop-up travel trailers. They use air inflation technology to expand the roof and sides of your RV so you don’t have to. The entire setup ranges from 60-180 seconds long, depending on the size that you purchased. In fact, the OP LITE only needs 80 seconds to fully expand and get ready for camping!

Another huge benefit to purchasing this pop-up travel trailer is the fact that it is extremely rugged and built for off-grid camping. You have rock guards, a raised chassis, all-terrain tires, and much more. You can truly take this travel trailer anywhere that your all-wheel drive vehicle can go, which is a fairly rare occurrence in the RV world!

The queen size bed inside of the OP LITE converts into a seating area for the whole family. There’s an exterior kitchen that gives you all the basics, and it should be covered by an awning or the optional tent addition should you choose to purchase it. However, keep in mind that there are no bathroom amenities on board this travel trailer, so be prepared to rough it!

Lightest Weight: TAXA Outdoors Cricket

  • Amazing and convertible design for any lifestyle
  • Under 1800 lb when unloaded, making it easy to tow
  • Plenty of amenities, including a kitchen and portable toilet
  • May be a bit tall for your garage

Arguably one of the more unique options on this list, the Cricket from TAXA Outdoors is a great choice for those of you seeking something exceedingly lightweight. In fact, this travel trailer weighs under 1800 lb dry, making it easy to tow by a number of different vehicles. Let’s take a closer look at it now.

One of the best things about the Cricket is the fact that it has a flexible interior living space. You can add additional sleeping arrangements for the kiddos so that you can sleep up to four people inside of this compact RV. Plus, the primary sleeping area can be converted into a dining space, or a lounge area, or you can even leave it open for additional storage.

In terms of the measurements of this travel trailer, the cricket is 15 ft long and just over 6.5 ft wide. When closed, the Cricket is just under 7 ft tall, making it one of the taller options on this list. However, it should still fit in the average residential garage, carport, or protected storage area. Take your measurements carefully, just in case!

While rugged and unique, this pop-up travel trailer still offers you plenty of amenities. There’s an indoor kitchen and a portable toilet as well as a shower option, depending on the floor plan you choose. Plus, having such a flexible interior likely appeals to a number of different campers, especially if you are seeking something unique.

There’s plenty of storage, inside and out, including rooftop storage for your bicycles, kayaks , and more. Keep in mind that, the more weight you add, the more you will have to tow, so make sure your tow vehicle can still handle this option when fully loaded!

All in all, the Cricket is a cool travel trailer that will still fit in the average residential garage. It’s lightweight enough to bring it wherever you want to take it, and it offers plenty of storage solutions with its convertible interior. However, it may be a bit outside your budget, especially if you are looking for something that is shorter in height.

Best for Families: Forest River Rockwood Hard Side Camper

  • Unique A-frame design gives you plenty of headroom when fully set up
  • Kitchen and wet bath on board, depending on the floor plan
  • Under six feet tall and collapsed, making it easy to store
  • Length may be too long for your garage, depending

Affordable and durable, the Rockwood from Forest River offers a hard-sided camper in an attractive A-frame shape. Some of these floor plans even include a wet bath on board, making it a more comfortable and compact camper for the whole family. Let’s take a look at all of the amenities that it has to offer.

If you haven’t heard of the Forest River brand name yet, I highly recommend checking out our complete review of this popular RV manufacturer. The Rockwood is available in a hard-sided pop-up travel trailer as well as a softer option if you need more living space overall. However, the hard-sided Rockwood offers more durability in the long run, particularly from rain or snow.

The length of this particular RV ranges from 18 to 21 ft long. The collapsed height is under 6 feet tall. If you have a longer garage than average, fitting this camper indoors is no problem, but you may have to park this one in your carport or driveway, depending on your specific situation.

With extra length comes extra interior living space, offering you a convertible queen or king-size bed as well as a convertible dinette area to sleep additional people. There’s a kitchen inside as well as a comfortable interior design, complete with air conditioning if you need it. Many pop-up campers cannot offer air conditioning given their design, but the hard sides of the Rockwood make this possible.

Another benefit to the Rockwood is the fact that you can store bicycles and kayaks on the roof of this RV when it is fully collapsed. There isn’t very much interior or exterior storage on this RV, but having the option to store things on top of your rig as you drive is a huge plus. Given the low profile of this travel trailer, storing things atop it while you drive shouldn’t interfere with your gas mileage too much.

All in all, this is a great choice for the average family or adventurous couple seeking something that is lightweight and easy to store. Make sure your specific garage measurements can handle the length of this RV, but it has plenty to offer otherwise!

Best for Couples: The Meerkat

  • Highly customizable for a fair price
  • Fiberglass exterior makes this option more durable than others
  • Expandable elements gives you more interior living space
  • Taller than average and may not fit in your tiny garage

At 13 ft long, the Meerkat is shorter in length compared to the Rockwood. This makes it easier to store in the average garage, especially with its unique pop-up rooftop that earned this travel trailer its name. Starting at $25k, the Meerkat is a cute, customizable travel trailer that fits in the average garage and is perfect for couples.

Meerkat Trailers only manufactures two different types of travel trailers. This means that they are open and available for any questions as well as customizable amenities that you might be looking for. You can choose the interior and exterior colors as well as a number of different amenities such as larger awnings, refrigerators, expandable sides, and more.

When it comes to the rest of the dimensions for this travel trailer, the Meerkat is 6.5 ft tall and roughly 5 ft wide. The pop-up element of this travel trailer is located in the center of the RV and doesn’t span the entire rooftop . While this may seem like a letdown, it likely enhances the overall stability of your RV roof, giving you less maintenance to consider in the long run.

The adorable fiberglass exterior and vintage interior make this option attractive as well as functional. There’s plenty of storage, inside and out, and the kitchen comes fully loaded. There’s an expansive seating area as well as a portable toilet on board, giving you plenty of amenities for an RV of this size.

However, given the height of this RV, you should make sure that it fits where you plan on storing it. Plus, this RV truly doesn’t sleep more than two people comfortably, so it really is meant for couples at the end of the day. With plenty to customize, this travel trailer is lightweight, attractive, and fun to camp in!

Boondocking Travel Trailer: OPUS OP 2

  • Compact for storage and spacious when set up
  • Plenty of amenities for four people
  • Air inflation technology makes setup easy
  • Tent materials may not last forever

Another option from OPUS has to be the OP 2. This pop-up travel trailer is larger than the LITE option previously discussed, sleeping up to four people inside. Plus, it’s just as rugged as the LITE option, capable of going wherever your journeys take you. While it’s more expensive than the previous OPUS  travel trailer, it’s well worth it when you see all of the additional amenities included!

Complete with all-terrain tires, a raised chassis, a rugged exterior design, as well as the air inflation technology that OPUS is known for, this travel trailer is great for boondocking. Not only does it have off-grid utility capabilities, but it also is designed to be used no matter the season and no matter the road conditions.

Let’s talk about measurements first. When collapsed, the OP 2 is just over 18 ft long, 6 ft wide, and has a height of 4.5 ft. This makes it compact and easy to store in your garage, carport, and elsewhere. The weight on this particular pop-up travel trailer is far heavier than average, however, just over 3,000 lbs dry .

After the air inflation technology sets up your RV for you, the interior is spacious and expansive. You have a large sleeping area at one end and a convertible dinette space at the other. Plus, there is an exterior kitchen, a portable toilet and shower, and plenty of storage solutions, both when the RV is set up and when it is in motion.

Another great perk to this pop-up travel trailer is the fact that you can add additional tent annexes or living spaces. This gives you more space to spread out and you can sleep more people on your camping trips should you so desire. However, keep in mind that this RV is built primarily out of tent fabric and materials, likely making it less durable than other options.

Most Unique: Airstream Basecamp

  • Stunning design with large panoramic window
  • Plenty of amenities and luxurious touches
  • Aluminum design and construction make this one well-built
  • May be too large for your garage, depending on the floor plan

There have been plenty of unique travel trailers on this list so far, but the Airstream Basecamp is one of the most eye-catching RVs currently being manufactured. Available in two different sizes, this aluminum beauty may not fit in your attached garage, but it’s certainly an option to consider if you want something durable and one-of-a-kind. Let’s take a closer look now.

Starting at $46k, the Airstream Basecamp is available in either a 16 ft long or 20 ft long model. No matter which you choose, the height of this RV is just under 10 ft tall. This may not fit in the average garage or carport, so definitely get your measurements exact before you fall in love with this option.

The Basecamp may not be the most traditional of Airstream travel trailers, but it still offers everything that Airstream is known for . It is extremely well-built, full of luxurious amenities, and more convenient than just about any other option on this list. It has plenty of storage, solar panels, and a more traditional RV interior that offers you a bathroom and kitchen.

The primary difference between the two sizes is the sleeping arrangements. Both models have a large panoramic front window so that you can take in the views of the great outdoors, but the smaller model sleeps two people in the larger model sleeps four. This is an important distinction if you want to sleep the entire family or bring some friends along with you camping.

With durable materials and more amenities than we can list here, the Basecamp is truly a special travel trailer to consider, especially for resale value. However, it is arguably the largest option on this list, so make sure it fits in your garage or driveway before getting ahead of yourself!

Final Thoughts

Finding a travel trailer that fits in a garage isn’t impossible, but it will take some research and searching. Knowing the measurements of the location where you are hoping to keep your RV is a good place to start, so get those numbers before you start shopping.

Garages are fantastic places to keep any RV, offering you peace of mind and security when your travel trailer isn’t amused!

RVs have become increasingly popular with families who want to travel and enjoy the great outdoors comfortably. Some folks prefer to live the RV life full-time, but for many, it’s an occasional escape from life inside your home.

Having an RV is great for family vacations, but should be stored when not in use to avoid unnecessary exposure and damage from the elements. Depending on what RV you own, you may be able to store it in your own garage.

What type of RV’s fit in a standard garage?

RVs that can fit in a standard garage must be less than 7-8 feet tall, 20 feet long, and 8 feet wide. Some low-roof campervans, small travel trailers, and popups will fit this requirement.

RVs come in various shapes and sizes, but those that fit in a standard garage are generally restricted to small motorhomes and trailers including popup, teardrop, and r-pod designs.

To save you time searching for the best RV you can store in your home garage, I have prepared a comprehensive guide. I’ve also included some accessories that will help you fit your RV in your garage without damaging the RV – or things in the garage.

One must-have accessory is a backup camera. It is essential to see behind you when backing into a tight space (or when kids or pets are around). For a short trailer, this wireless camera is easy to install and budget-friendly. Check Amazon for the current price here .

What Types of RVs Fit in a Garage?

Types of RV that can fit your standard garage generally include teardrop, pop-up, and tent camper trailers, and other small travel trailers. While these are your best bet, always check your garage’s exact measurements first and don’t assume any dimensions when searching for an RV.

Next, we’ll list 10 popular RVs that can fit in a standard garage. Keep reading for some bonus tips that may help get your RV to fit in the garage if you’re having trouble.

Pro Tip: Some people can raise the height of the garage door by up to a foot to get more room. Read on for tips on how to do this.

Travel Trailers That Fit in a Standard Garage

If you can keep your RV at home, this is one of the best storage options. It’s the most cost-effective option, as storage areas can cost $50 to $300 a month. In addition, storing your camper at home is easy and allows you to take care of and maintain your trailer anytime.

Depending on your garage’s dimensions, there are a few RV options available that can meet your needs.

First, though, it’s important to consider what you want out of your camper. If you have a large family, pets, or just prefer a more spacious environment, a small RV that can fit in a standard garage may not be for you.

Make sure you take all aspects of the travel trailer you want into account – not just if it will fit in your garage.

Garage Measurements You Need to Fit Your RV Trailer

As mentioned earlier, there aren’t many options available for trailers and campervans that can fit in a standard sized garage. If you’re looking to buy an RV and want to store it inside your garage, it’s important to know the exact measurements of your space. Below are the common dimensions of standard door openings for 1- and 2-car garages:

Side by side houses with garage door driveway

Door Measurements of Standard 1 Car Garage

Door measurements of standard 2 car garage.

Most homes have 7- to 8-foot garage openings, which are relatively small for many RVs. To be safe, never make assumptions if an RV will fit in your garage based on the manufacturer’s measurements. Always measure the dimensions yourself.

Also, make sure you take into account anything that may be added onto your RV later that could increase its dimensions – such as an AC unit on the roof.

If you don’t want to sacrifice on the size of your RV purchase, you can renovate your garage to fit your trailer. However, this can be costly and may not be feasible for many home garages, depending on the structure of your home.

To fit a larger camper or RV in your garage, you would need to build or renovate your space to have at least a 12’ to 16’ tall door with about 10’ to 14’ width and 30’ to 40’ depth to provide ample space for your camper.

Instead of renovating your garage to house a large RV, consider building a large 3-sided shed or carport if you have the outdoor space. This will still help protect your RV from most of the elements. You can even buy them online, like this 10′ x 20′ x 8′ waterproof instant garage .

Can I Customize My RV to Fit in My Garage?

The most common problem that RVers run into when trying to fit their camper in a garage is that the rig is too tall. Standard trailers usually have a high roof, making them too tall to fit into the garage door.

It may be out of the question to make your garage door opening taller. Instead, there are a few ways you can lower your RV a bit. If you happen to find the RV of your dreams and it’s just a few inches shy from fitting in your space, see if these ideas may solve your problem:

Note: I strongly suggest using a backup camera to squeeze into your space. For a short trailer, this wireless camera is easy to install and budget-friendly. Check Amazon for the current price here .

Purchase smaller wheels

This is one of the simplest and easiest ways to quickly lower your RV’s height while it’s in storage.

Get two 8-inch rims with 5.70×8 tires and switch to magically lower your RV by 3-5 inches! If this still doesn’t do the trick, go ahead and just use the bare rims. Prepare two 12-inch plywood tracks for these rims to roll on.

Use wheel dollies

Another option is to get some wheel dollies and completely remove your camper’s wheels. They will keep your axle off the ground with a 4-inch margin while supporting your unit’s weight.

You can find wheel dollies online: Check price on Amazon.

This solution would work for temporary storage, but not continual use. You don’t want to be taking your tires on and off all the time.

Related Questions on Campervans that Fit In Standard Garage

Can i store an rv on my property.

If you’ve never stored an RV at your home before, you may be wondering if it’s legal to do so. The short answer is yes; no law says you can’t park your motorhome on your own property.

However, if you live in an HOA or municipal area, check with all local rules and laws as they might state otherwise.

Pro Tip: Once you find an RV model you like, try renting one before buying to make sure it’s the right fit for you – and your garage. Look at available RVs for rent on Outdoorsy or RVezy .

If by chance you can’t store your RV at home, your best bet is to leave it at a paid storage facility. These generally have gated entrances and security cameras to help keep your rig safe.

Pro Tip: Wherever you decide to store your RV, make sure to secure the hitch with a hitch lock. You can find affordable, secure hitch locks on Amazon

Will a campervan fit in a garage?

garageable travel trailer

Most campervans, or Class B motorhomes, will not fit into a standard garage. They typically are about 9 to 10 feet high, while a typical home garage’s opening is about 7 to 8 feet. Other elements included on top – such as roof-racks, solar panels, vents or fans – can make them even taller.

However, there are still some available small, low-roof campervans that are specifically designed to be stored in a garage.

Will a travel trailer fit in a standard garage?

As with campervans, there are only a few types of travel trailers that can fit in a standard garage , such as pop-up tents and teardrop-shaped trailers. You just have to be mindful of the dimensions, especially the height, which is the usual problem for RVs.

How to know the garage size for my RV?

To determine what size garage you’ll need for your RV, always measure the dimensions of your rig first and go from there. Most conventional garage doors tend not to fit standard RVs, so custom doors are likely to be needed.

Make sure to measure the height of your garage opening – not the building itself – and compare it to your RV’s height.

You will also need to consider the width of your garage door compared to the width of your RV. Make sure you have enough room to walk around the RV and perform any maintenance you may need to while it’s inside the garage.

Finally, consider the depth of your garage and how long your travel trailer or RV is. Make sure you have a few inches of extra space in your garage on either end of the RV.

When determining the length of your trailer, you’ll need to account for the tongue as well as anything that may be mounted on the back, such as a spare tire or grill.

What’s the average cost of RVs that fit in a standard garage?

There are limited types of RV units that can fit in a standard garage, but there’s a fairly wide range of prices for them.

When looking at the cost of new RVs that can fit in a standard garage, prices range from about $15,000 all the way up to $85,000. However, you can find older or used travel trailers for significantly less.

What RVs tend to fit in standard 2-car garages?

While 2-car garages are typically longer and wider than 1-car garages (to accommodate the extra vehicle), the height is still the same. Therefore, even with a 2-car garage, you’re limited to what size of travel trailer you can park in it. Your best bet is still a small travel trailer – like a teardrop, pop-up, and tent camper trailers – as they have lower roof heights.

Final Thoughts About RVs That May Fit in Your Garage

Storing your RV in your own garage is the cheapest and easiest storage solution. If your garage is not large enough, but you have some extra room outside, you can buy or construct a carport or 3-sided shed to at least protect your motorhome from the worst of the elements.

There are a few small RV models that can be stored in your garage. However, the most common travel trailers and camper vans aren’t designed to fit in a standard residential garage. If you insist on keeping your RV at home, then you may have to make some adjustments to either your trailer or your garage (or both!).

Always remember to measure, measure, and measure again to ensure that you can safely park your RV inside without causing any damage.

Can a travel trailer fit in a garage?

Published on November 1st, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on January 26th, 2023

Don’t let the high cost of RV storage stop you from buying a new RV. If you’ve ever wondered “Can a travel trailer fit in a garage?”, the answer is Yes ! Not all trailers are small enough to store in a residential garage, but some can. Let’s review how to measure and make sure your new camper fits in yours.

Does That camper fit in a residential garage?

Residential garage sizes are pretty standard wherever you go in North America. A small trailer fits in a single-car garage if the dimension of the travel trailer is less than 8 feet wide and less than 7 or 8  feet in height.

Keep in mind that using a garage for RV storage limits your model choices to pop-up tent campers, teardrops or small travel trailers.

Don’t just eyeball your garage for RV storage of a new camper. You need to know before buying your first pop-up or ultralight travel trailer.

How to Measure a Garage for RV Storage

  • First, get your dream camper’s measurements from the manufacturer. But don’t assume those figures are correct. Sometimes the dealer or previous owner modifies a feature that increases or decreases exterior dimensions. For example, the axle might have been replaced, a roof-top A/C might have been added or removed. Measure the camper yourself.
  • Next, measure the width and height of your garage door when it is up. Measure side to side between weather strips. Then measure from the ground to the door header.

How To Lower a Trailer To Fit In a Garage

If you are just shy several inches from storing a trailer in the garage, you can try to lower the travel trailer itself. Here are a couple of ways to do it:

Purchase smaller wheels

You can buy two 8-inch rims with 5.70×8 tires on them. They are typically used in tent campers and come in 5 lug configuration. Temporarily install them on your travel trailer, which should lower your unit by 3-4 inches.

If you need a little bit more of a height drop, some folks just use the bare rims without the tires. Just create two plywood tracks about 12 inches in width and roll the rim on them. Removing the wheels fast and easy with an electric impact lug nut wrench and a small floor jack.

Use Wheel Dollies

With this method, you will completely remove the wheel and place the travel trailer on a wheel dolly. Wheel dollies will keep your axle about 4-inches from the ground. Never try to roll your travel trailers on the bare brake drums. It may cause chips and crack.

Summary About RV Camper Storage in Garages

The most common travel trailers will not fit in a residential garage. For those, you will need a custom RV garage to store your camper.

However, you can store your RV for free if you own small travel trailers such as teardrops, tent campers, and any of the awesome small travel trailers featured here. Always measure before buying to ensure you can back your camper in without damaging your RV or the garage.

Related Questions

Does an Airstream Basecamp fit in a garage? The Airstream Basecamp cannot fit in a standard residential garage because it is too tall. The exterior height of the Basecamp is 8 feet 8.75 inches, while the height of a standard garage is either 7 feet or 8 feet. A Basecamp can, however, fit in a standard outdoor parking space.

Can an R-Pod fit in a garage? The Forest River R-Pod has an exterior height of 9-feet 8-inches, so it cannot fit in a standard residential garage.

Can a Scamp trailer fit in a garage?  In most cases, yes, even with a 7-foot garage opening. Some people must remove the vent/hatch opening on their camper to make it fit.

Others temporarily replace the Scamp’s standard tires with 8-inch wheels and tires to reduce the height of the Scamp by about 3 inches. Some will just use the wheel and roll the camper on 12-inc wide plywood tracks into their garage. The plywood tracks prevent the wheel/rims from damaging your floor.

ATIA Looks to Spread the Word on ‘Garageable’ Travel Trailer

garageable travel trailer

Innovation, ease of use and a consumer-friendly price point are attributes ATIA-RV President and CEO Iva “Nick” Nicholas hopes will propel the growth of his fledgling company.

Nicholas founded ATIA – formed from the first letters of his and his three children’s first names –in 2017 after a 20-year career at KZ-RV.

For the first few years, Nicholas said he was, “flying under the radar, so to speak. Because it was seven days a week, blood, sweat and tears getting this thing going. So I wanted to go under the radar and create this product, this little niche, but now I just want to get the word out.”

The “little niche” is a travel trailer, the ATIA RV GU, with a retractable roof that will fit inside an average one-space garage. GU connotes “garageable unit” with “garagable” perhaps being a word the company coined.

Four motors – one mounted in the sidewalls at each corner of the RV – lift the roof into place with the press of a button. In the down position, the unit sits 82 inches high, low enough to fit in the standard 84-inch garage door opening. In the up position, the unit is 97 inches high with an interior height of 77 inches.

Towed in the lowered position, the trailer has much improved aerodynamics and offers greater fuel mileage than taller, conventional travel trailers, Nicholas said, while offering all the same comforts.

To his knowledge, he said, the ATIA GU is the only travel trailer of its kind on the market.

“The thought of this product started when HOAs (Homeowners Associations) started becoming a thing,” he said, noting that many HOAs in suburbs across the U.S. had rules that precluded the storage of RVs outside.

In addition, at just 2,100 pounds, the ATIA can be towed behind many different smaller cars, crossovers and SUVs, so consumers who want to camp in the comfort of a travel trailer can do so without having to buy a pickup truck.

A major selling point, Nicholas said, is the price point. At a base MSRP of $17,000, “It fits right in that sweet spot,” he said. “What we try to do is get our MSRP in the mid teens to $20,000. Everybody can afford that price point.”

garageable travel trailer

The ATIA currently is offered in just one model with six floorplans designed to accommodate everyone from a couple, with a queen bed, to a family of four, with a convertible dinette.

Frame length of the ATIA is 17 feet, 1 inch and overall length is 21 feet. It comes equipped with a 3-cubic-foot refrigerator and 6-gallon water heater. Fresh water capacity is 15 gallons, while gray water and wastewater tanks are at 20 gallons each. It carries 20 pounds of LP gas with a 20,000 BTU furnace and rear-mounted AC unit. An 8-foot Dometic awning also is included.

Building the units in two locations in LaGrange and Middlebury, Nicholas said the company is trying to find a facility where construction can be consolidated under one roof. “We’re getting orders – no problem there – just like everybody else, but we need a centralized place to increase production,” he said.

Production output is one unit per week and the pace is intentional, he said, because, “we want to make sure the quality stays top notch, that we’re not missing anything, because as a new company, if you want to tell the world, ‘Here I am,’ you’ve got to have your best foot forward. We want to make sure everything is really fine tuned.”

Currently working with 10 dealers, Nicholas said, “We’re building our dealer network as we go. We’re strategically picking which dealers we work with and every day we’re talking with more.”

He said there is significant interest among dealers because they like to talk to an independent manufacturer.

Nicholas said he hopes to have a 100 percent solar-powered unit with no wood used in its construction available for this year’s Elkhart Open House. Several other products also are in various stages of development, he said.

Why You Should Own a Garageable RV: A Comprehensive Guide

Why You Should Own a Garageable RV: A Comprehensive Guide

The recreational vehicle (RV) culture has been growing exponentially over the years. These vehicles offer the convenience of being at home while on the road, ensuring your adventure does not compromise your comfort. However, where to store your RV when not in use is an important consideration. In this comprehensive guide, we discuss why you should own an RV that fits in your garage, outlining both the challenges of owning non-garageable RVs and the benefits of owning garageable ones.

The Challenges of Non-Garageable RVs

Storing an RV that does not fit in your garage can present several issues:

1.  Homeowners Association (HOA) Rules : Many HOAs have restrictions against parking large RVs in driveways or streets, deeming them eyesores. Violating these rules can result in hefty fines.

2.  Depreciation and Damage from the Elements : Leaving your RV exposed to harsh weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or hail, can accelerate its depreciation. This can decrease its resale value significantly.

3.  Cleaning and Maintenance: An RV parked outside is likely to gather dirt, dust, and even bird droppings. These elements can damage the RV's exterior and require more frequent cleaning.

4.  Storage Fees: If your RV is too large to fit in your garage, you may need to pay for off-site storage, which can be costly.

5.  Neighborly Relations : Large RVs can obstruct views or simply be perceived as unsightly, potentially causing tension between you and your neighbors.

Benefits of a Garageable RV

An RV that can be stored in a garage presents numerous advantages:

1.  Preserved Value: Keeping your RV in a garage protects it from the elements, helping to maintain its condition and resale value.

2.  Reduced Maintenance : Sheltered from dust, dirt, and weather, your RV requires less cleaning and is less likely to sustain damage.

3.  No HOA Issues : By parking your RV in your garage, you avoid violating HOA rules and the ensuing penalties.

4.  Convenience: Having your RV close allows for easy loading and unloading, and if your garage is climate-controlled, you can do this in comfort.

5.  Power Hookup : Many garages have the capability for an RV to hook up to shore power for maintenance, charging batteries, or pre-cooling the refrigerator.

6.  Neighbor Relations: Keeping your RV in a garage keeps your neighborhood aesthetic intact and reduces potential conflict with neighbors.

7.  Usage : An RV that can be stored at home, indoors, and out of the elements can be packed and ready to go at a moment's notice, making travel and camping fun and spontaneous as it should be. The more effort it takes to prepare for a trip, the less likely you will go, or go often.

RV Types and Garageability

The type of RV you choose will determine its garageability. RVs range from pull-behind trailers, 5th wheels, Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, truck campers, to Class B motorhomes, each with unique dimensions.

1  Pull-Behind Trailers : These come in various sizes, with the smaller ones being garageable. They are towed by a separate vehicle.

2.  5th Wheels: These are larger and usually require dedicated storage space as they are typically too tall and long for a conventional garage.

3.  Class A Motorhomes: These are large and luxurious, but their size often excludes them from being stored in standard-sized garages.

4.  Class C Motorhomes : Smaller than Class A motorhomes, but still challenging to fit in other than very large garages

5.  Truck Campers : These slide into the bed of a pickup truck, making them difficult to store in a standard garage if mounted on your truck.

6.  Class B Motorhomes : Also known as campervans, these are the most likely to fit into a home garage however, most do not unless you have a large and high garage door. Their compact size offers a balance between comfort and practicality.

Highlighting one particular Class B model, the Mini-T Campervan, illustrates the merits of owning a garageable RV. The Mini-T Campervan is compact enough to fit in almost any modern garage, especially considering that most garage doors are 7ft (or just 84 inches tall). The Mini-T Campervan boasts amenities found in larger RVs but in a compact, practical size for daily use. This makes it a versatile option that's perfect for weekend getaways, long trips, and everything in between.

Moreover, the Mini-T Campervan’s size allows it to serve as an everyday vehicle when not being used for camping. This dual-functionality aspect provides an extra layer of practicality not found in larger RV models, making it an ideal choice for those seeking both convenience and adventure while staying well within the affordability of an everyday vehicle and well below the cost of most motorhomes.

In conclusion, owning a garageable RV, such as the Mini-T Campervan, addresses many of the challenges associated with owning larger, non-garageable RVs. By offering protection from the elements, reducing maintenance needs, and adhering to HOA rules, a garageable RV delivers convenience, practicality, and peace of mind, enhancing your RV ownership and travel experience.

Happy Camping!

Are All Small Travel Trailers The Same

Some people look for practicality in a small camper trailer, while others need some home comforts while traveling. To meet all demands, manufacturers have created a wide range of travel trailers while addressing the diverse demands of travelers and campers.

So, to answer the question in a single word, no, each travel trailer is equipped with its perks and flexes. Some of the travel trailers are decent sized, they contain enough space to fix a TV , and you can even fix a couch in there as well.

If you want to travel light, then a small travel trailer that weighs around 3000 pounds would be perfect for you. But if you want a small camper trailer which has almost everything that is necessary to you to go through the day, then a travel trailer of a size slightly larger than this would be a better option for you.

The smaller the travel trailer generally means the easier to tow, hence giving more control to its consumers. If you want to take your truck on different routes, then a smaller truck will play in your favor as it is easier to tow. Going for a little time out in the hills? Restrictions While Traveling

The major disadvantage of having a small travel trailer is that there are limited amenities. You can’t take everything you want as there is less space inside the trailer. Similarly, you can’t have many guests coming along with you.

Aspects to Consider Before Buying a Small Travel Trailer

If you are seriously considering to buy a small travel trailer, it is important to keep several points in your mind.

It is important that whichever trailer you buy satisfies your needs. So have a clear idea regarding your needs and then narrow down your list of trailers depending on your requirement. The more you spend, the more luxuries and better construction you'll get. But for your first trailer, it's ok to go with something cheaper, after all, you may not take to the great outdoors.

Reliability

It's better if you invest in a trailer that is made up of a structure that is reliable and durable. You don’t want to buy a trailer that needs repairing all too often. Sure, price comes into this, but you can get good quality trailers at reasonable prices.

If you are a family of five, then a small trailer for two won’t help you out. Choosing a trailer while keeping your storage and space demands in check is always something you should consider.

Cautious Considerations to Keep in Mind

A couple of points will help you land on a straight and profitable deal when it comes to travel trailer shopping. These include:

Heater and Generator

Be mindful that you will be spending the nights in a small camper trailer when the temperature drops, so heating plugs and electricity are important. Always keep in mind that you will need a generator setup and heating systems as well.

Ceiling Height

This is one of the most important features to consider, but usually, it gets ignored by most travel trailer enthusiasts. If you're treating yourself with an RV or a travel trailer that comes with luxurious features such as a bathroom, then make sure your trailer is heightened enough that you can easily stand and move around in there. The aim is not to feel claustrophobic in your ride.

People Also Ask

A small travel trailer is meant to provide a comfortable and enjoyable trip with all the amenities. Whether you travel around the desert, mountains, and valleys, these trailers feel safe and protected from extreme weather conditions. Moving forward, we have answers to some of the frequently asked questions by people to ensure them a better experience.
