“ Fantastic place, fantastic chefs and most of all fantastic food. I couldn't believe that I was able to cook and present food that looked and tasted as great as it did. Freya, Maynard and Benedict are wonderful hosts and make you feel very welcome. ” Kay G. from Australia, solo traveller, joining a group in France
“ This “insider look” was truly much more than a cooking class. The chef & guide shared how Parisians shop, cook and live in this extraordinary city. The experience is a treasure not to be missed! Our hotel was truly romantic and just perfect for our honeymoon. ” Julie & Pete, travelling on their honeymoon to Paris
“ Our week in Morocco was magical. The course was fantastic, the staff were so gracious and attentive and the location was out of a fairy tale...Rafik treated us like royalty and went above and beyond to make our trip special. “ Our week in Tuscany was excellent! The quality of the food was staggering. We were treated like family and really experienced authentic Italy. “ Wow, wow, wow. I am so happy that you found this for me. This was one of the best holidays I've ever had. The hands-on aspect of the course is so crucial to help me learn. Poul is fantastic both as a person and as a chef. We had great dinners, great wines, and great conversations. The accommodations were fantastic. I would recommend this to all my food-loving friends. ” Allan W. from London, UK, travelling with friends.

Why Gourmet on Tour

why-gourmet-on-tour

We create one-of-a-kind holidays for foodies to experience an insider view of a region. Each location is selected for its character and authenticity, to make you feel at home as an invited guest and not as a tourist. Each route is carefully designed to immerse you in the local culture.

There will be always amazing food and stunning accommodations, whether you are cooking with a Michelin-starred chef in France or preparing a feast with a local mamma in a Tuscan farmhouse. It is a mix that allows you to sample both, a region’s refined cuisine and its rustic traditions.

We are thrilled to have received these awards.

A recognition for our team of course but also all of the hotels, chefs, sommeliers, guides and food artisans we work with and make our guests’ dreams come through. Thank you to everyone who has voted for us!

I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience Tour

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience

My husband and I just returned from our week-long stay at Masseria Linazza, and it was one of our most fun and unique vacations ever! Chef Emilio, wife Clara, brother Michele, and father Antonio were the most gracious, kind, hospitable, and accommodating hosts! They are very flexible and want to ensure that all of their guests have a memorable experience. They took us to different parts of the Salento region each day and told us about the history of the area, answered questions, allowed time for photos, and in some cases let us decide how much free time we wanted before returning to the masseria. We stayed in a B&B that was a 5-minute walk from the masseria. Our room was very spacious with a queen bed and single bed, plenty of closet space, and a large bathroom. We found fresh towels on the bed every other day! A short walk from the B&B is a cute coffee shop where we enjoyed delicious coffee with the locals before walking back to the masseria for an abundant breakfast of delicious pastries, yogurt, fresh cut fruit, fruit juice, and more delicious coffee. We loved the small-group “family feel” of this tour, as well as the peaceful atmosphere around the property (especially after having spent the previous week in bustling, fast-paced Rome). My favorite part of each day was gathering for dinner at the restaurant to enjoy Emilio’s fantastic dishes, fine red and white wines from the region, amazing desserts, and great conversations with our new friends. Due to the casual/flexible nature of this tour, do not expect to do everything listed in the tour description or to follow the daily schedule exactly as shown. Just relax and know that you will be treated to some stunning sights with some amazing hosts who want you to experience the best that their region of Italy has to offer. My husband and I highly recommend this tour! Final note: Omar at Soleto Travel was excellent to work with! He was very responsive and helpful as we planned for this tour.

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour Tour

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour

This private tour of Sicily one of the most fun, relaxing, beautiful, and delicious (!) vacations we've ever had--the perfect way to break out of the Covid "lockdown" blues after not being able to travel for 17 months. If you are considering this vacation, stop looking and book this tour before it sells out--you will not regret it!! I originally thought I would book the small group tour, but because of covid--and more importantly because the private tour price was so reasonable--we booked this as a private tour, and it couldn't have been more perfect. Massimo is the SINGLE BEST travel agent we've ever used. I don't say this lightly--First, I'm extremely picky (I'm a professor and scientist, and I tend to analyze everything; I want only the very best experiences; second, we have traveled all over the world, and we have very high standards and expectations. We have always had wonderful local travel agents, but Massimo went "above and beyond" in every way imaginable. His communication was phenomenal; with Covid restrictions, we weren't sure we were going to be able to make the trip happen at all, and at every stage Massimo would send me the latest information on Italy, and also he basically said we could cancel for a full refund even a week before our trip, which is an extremely generous policy and eased a lot of my stress. I ask a lot of questions, and he answered every question very quickly with detailed answers. He treated me more like a friend or family member than a "client."If he hadn't been so friendly, reassuring, and had such a flexible policy, we probably wouldn't have taken the trip. The trip itself was absolutely perfect in every way. When local travel agents plan trips for us, I meticulously read reviews of all the hotels and activities, and I end up making suggestions for revisions or alterations. In this case, all of the reviews were stellar, so I didn't ask fora single revision. And yet, every single tour, activity, and hotel Massimo planned was FABULOUS. I wouldn't change a thing! The care with which Massimo puts into his tours--and especially his clients--is amazing. He would what's app me every evening to remind me of the pickup time the next morning, and again during the day to check in to see how our day was going, whether we were enjoying an activity, and if he could do anything to make things better. I noticed that every tour we went on, they took pictures of us and sent them to Massimo, which I believe was his way of making sure we were always well cared for, and where we were supposed to be. I truly felt like he deeply cared about us and wanted to make sure we were having the best time possible. His drivers, guides, and tours were also top notch. Every single driver (without exception) was early to pick us up, spoke great English, and was incredibly friendly and informative--it's as if he chose to only work with contractors who have his same wonderful personality. Each and every tour guide was also incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging, some of the best guides we've had in any city. All of the activities -- from cooking classes to food tours to wine tasting -- were incredible as well. What I loved most of all was that I literally never had to worry about anything, because everything was so perfectly chose and planned and because Massimo was always watching over us to make sure everything went well. I will absolutely recommend this tour of Sicily and especially Massimo to all of my friends and family!

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour Tour

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour

This was an outstanding experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend it. With Emilio and Clara and their family in Salento, I got to experience authentic Italian life as well as sightseeing some incredible towns. I felt like I was staying with good friends who had so much knowledge and desire to showcase the typical foods from the region. Emilio runs a restaurant at the olive oil farm and each meal was delicious. Understanding the production of olive oil was fascinating. And they give flexibility on the time you wish to spend at each place. Each day was different and they change the schedule to suit the weather so you get the best out of the places you visit. My time in Matera was just as outstanding. Mr Cosimo, my guide was very kind and shared so much history of the town with me. He looked after me like a good friend. It was amazing. He gave me great suggestions about restaurants for my free time. The hotel was stunning and had a Roman bath where I could relax. Omar from Soleto Travel was always very helpful in answering any questions and prompt. I am so happy I found this tour.

5 Days Italian Cookery Getaway in Umbria

Beautiful location with delicious food and good instruction. Fun mornings taught in a small friendly group, a slap up lunch cooked by us and then afternoons free to spend how you wish. Most had a car so went touring, we did not so spent the afternoons by the large pool which we had to ourselves. Raffaella was a most welcoming boast with good English and teaching style instilling confidence to try all the skills shown and repeat them at home using the recipes and apron provided. A pasta machine is definitely going on my Christmas list!

Excellent LUNCH and wine testing (5*) We did the VESUVIO hike, all the way to the TOP ! (5*) TOUR of NAPOLI was good. / We saw many more places, and took the subway (5*) Note : we had problems with the street food . Difficult to find good, relaxing places to have dinner in NAPOLI. ..Next time we will consult a TOUR GUIDE BOOK.

Everything about our tour was just amzingly great... from the tours, to the arrangements, to our chaufered driven Mercedes. One suggestion about our last stay at Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri. It is a very small village, and no nearby restaurant open on Mondays. Without a vehicle, it can be difficult, so it would be good to inform your clients. Also, the goodbye dinner was at Blue Rose, which would require a walk down to and back up the steep road. At night it can be a challenge and even dangerous, with no sidewalks. I would suggest either Osteria il Re degli Ignoranti or Ristorante Concordia, which are much closer to the Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri Hotel.

Bologna is one of Italy’s most fantastic cities with a real bohemian atmosphere and you´ll love the array of charming restaurants and wine bars. Free evening on your own with our suggestions for dining.

Day 2 Today you will taste a little slice of heavan- Culatello ham, the Crème de la Crème prosciutto of Italy. Head towards Colorno in Parma province and visit a small and upmarket producer´s Culatello cellar and finish with an elegant lunch focusing on local specialties. Sample dishes include crema ai carciofi (artichoke soup), flan alle tre ricotte e salsa alla carbonara (Cheese and cream custard), Culatello di Zibello d.o.p. e selezione di salumi da noi prodotti e stagionati (a selection of the best charcuterie including culatello) and Risotto con radicchio veronese, Montasio e aceto balsamico (Risotto with chicory, cheese and real balsamic). Superb wines will be chosen for you from the encyclopedic wine list.  After lunch enjoy a digestive “passeggiata” in Parma, a small gourmet town that was also the home of Italy’s famed composers Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscannini. Don’t miss the wonderful Duomo. Before returning to Bologna, you have a fun visit in store at the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello, an actual museum dedicated to Ferrari (this is the birthplace of this mythical car!) Learn all about the “prancing horse” and visit the museum, which is quite large and you can see over 40 real models such as Formula 1 racecars from many different decades. For Ferrari-philes, there is also a Ferrari shop!  Return to your hotel and the evening is yours to explore Bologna on your own. It´s a fantastic city to just enjoy a stroll, it is small and easy to maneuver and there are endless churches, palaces, and charming squares to find on your own.

Day 3 This morning, you will leave Bologna extra early in order to get to an authentic Parmigiano Reggiano producer by cheesemaking time (roughly 8AM). There are dairies in an array of cities and you´ll visit a dairy in Reggio Emilia, about one hour from Bologna. The visit is complete and you will be an expert by the end of the cheese tour. You´ll see all elements of the Parmigiano production from the processing of milk in the vats, the moulding of the curd, the salting and then the ageing process of the photogenic cheese wheels. After this fascinating visit you´ll head into the wealthy little town of Modena for a visit to the 11th century Unesco heritage preserved Duomo, and relax over an aperitif of bubbly or vino bianco, outside if weather permits. Lunch today is at a top rated restaurant, right in Modena. A complete contrast to the traditional cuisine you’ve had until now, this exciting restaurant is a unique experience. This will be a convivial nearly three-hour affair, so sit back, relax and dig in! After lunch, you will probably want to enjoy a short little digestive walk! Before heading back to Bologna, you will visit a beautiful “Acetaia”, a real “Aceto Balsamico” cellar, where you´ll learn about the interesting history and production of this liquid gold and taste a few aged balsamics. Arrive back to Bologna in the early evening and enjoy free time on your own.

Day 4 Enjoy a later start today, and around 11AM you´ll have your very own pasta making class right in Bologna. Learn how to make pasta such as the famed local specialty of Tagliatelle al ragù (this is an ancient Bolognese recipe). Other local specialties include Lasagne al ragù, Tortellini in Brodo, Tortelloni Burro e Oro, Cotolette alla Bolognese (Veal Cutlets), and then for desserts- Torta di Mele (stunning homemade apple pie) and Raviole stuffed with “Mostarda” (a kind of jam made with quince, pears, sultanas, almonds, dried prunes, etc.). After a private cooking class, sit down and enjoy the results of your efforts! After some free time, you will enjoy a private guided walking tour of Bologna with a local art guide to take in some of the highlights such as the Two Towers, the Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno, the Jewish Ghetto, and the fascinating 16th century Anatomical theatre of the ancient university (your guide will have a lot of anecdotes during this visit!). The evening is yours to enjoy the wonderful osterie of Bologna, many with live jazz music.

Day 5 After breakfast you’ll leave this beautiful city and your personal driver will transfer you to Florence in about 1 hour. Upon the arrival, we’ll drive you to a relaxing panoramic tour of the city. Check in and a little time for relax. In The early afternoon your private art guide will meet you in the hotel and you’ll enjoy an entertaining walk to the Uffizi gallery. “Gallery” is something of a major understatement as this museum has one of the most incredible art collections in the world with nearly all the great European masters represented. A few of the many highlights include Sandro Botticelli´s Birth of Venus, Albrecht Dürer´s Adoration of the Magi, Caravaggio´s Bacchus, and Jacopo Tintoretto´s Portrait of a Venetian Admiral. Your walking tour continues on through Piazza Signoria, the Duomo Square and the gourmet shops of Florence. You’ll learn about art and Florence´s fascinating history while having a Campari Fizz aperitif at the literary café “Giubbe Rosse”; nibbling on some gourmet goodies at the gorgeous Procacci deli, dating back to the late 1800´s. In the late afternoon your guide will walk you back to your hotel to freshen up and relax before dinner. Tonight you will have a superb welcome dinner in a local rtestaurant, a tasting menu with surprise wine pairings await, this is a great way to start your culinary tour of Tuscany!

Day 6 Enjoy your breakfast and after your driver will collect you and take you into the Chianti countryside. This morning you have a private cooking class with an emphasis on traditional Tuscan cooking, “Cucina Povera”. Simple ingredients, extraordinary tastes- this is the essence of Tuscan cuisine. Dishes you might cook today include Crostini di polenta fritta con salsa di fegatini (Fried polenta with chicken liver pâté), Pappardelle all’uovo con sugo di cinghiale (Pappardelle pasta with wild boar sauce), Pici all’anatra (Pici pasta with duck sauce), Bistecca alla fiorentina con fagioli all’olio (Florentine steak with white beans in olive oil), Agnello all’aceto balsamico e menta (Lamb with balsamic vinegar and mint), Polenta alla erbe con baccalà e porri (herbed polenta with cod and leeks) and Risotto radicchio, zucca e scamorza (risotto with chicory, pumpkin and scamorza cheese).  After the cooking class, sit down with your chef and taste the fruit of your labors. It will be a three course meal, squared off with delicious homemade Biscottini washed down with Vinsanto, delicious! After lunch, enjoy a digestive tour through Chianti´s lovely hamlets like Greve, Montefioralle, Panzano… Before returning to Florence, stop into a beautiful wine producer for a guided visit of the property and of course a wine tasting. The night is yours in Florence, if you want  we’ll recommend some very good restaurants for dinner.

Day 7 Today our driver will pick you up at 9.30am for go to San Miniato, one of the most productive truffle-rich areas of Europe. The white truffle (which is usually a pale ochre in colour) that grows in the San Miniato hills is the most valuable type known. Meet the owner of the farm house and take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience searching for truffles with a truffle-hunting dog through the woods around San Miniato. Follow the dog hurriedly through the forest as he sniffs about and experience the surge of excitement as he starts digging for this edible treasure (white truffles go for nearly $15,000 per kg). Once it is found, you will be treated to a delightful meal that incorporates the truffle that you just discovered! Leave the farm house after lunch for go to Pisa for relax and to admire the famous Leaning Tower. Back to your hotel by 5pm.

Day 8 Meet your driver in the morning and start your day with a scenic drive to the little village of Panzano in Chianti. You are going to meet one of Tuscany’s most interesting culinary personalities- Dario Cecchini. This superstar butcher, called the “world’s most famous butcher” by the Los Angeles Times, is passionate about his meat! You are going to try his “Mac Dario” light lunch today, tasting his specialties like “Sushi del Chianti”, “Tonno del Chianti”, and “Arista in Porchetta”. Great food, great atmosphere, and great showman. Have a walk around pretty Panzano before heading further south to one of our favorite cheese producers…they are most loved for their fabulous Pecorino cheeses. You´ll enjoy a visit to the ripening rooms, learn about the process of Tuscan cheesemaking and of course enjoy a tasting of their cheeses accompanied by spectacular onion based jams they make small quantities of. This is an informal and authentic experience, and always a favorite on our tours. Back to Florence and rest of the day at leisure for shopping and relax. For your last night in Florence we’ll reserve fot you a table in a very good restaurant, a great way to end your gastronomic tour and enjoy a tasting menu paired with top Tuscan wines. The driver will show all the different options!

THE-HIDDEN-TREASURES-SEPARATOR

The northern Italian region of Piedmont has a lot to offer – in particular from a culinary point of view: Whether rice fields in the Po Valley, the UNESCO World Heritage vineyards of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato or white truffles in Alba. Piedmont, home of the Slow Food movement, leaves no culinary wishes unfulfilled!

Our journey through culinary Piedmont starts with a visit to a historic organic rice farm where rice has been grown since the 14th century. Today, the area in Northern Piedmont is considered the largest rice-growing area in Europe. The journey continues to the capital of Piedmont – Turin – where we immerse ourselves in the diversity of the city during a culinary walk. A so called “menù di famiglia” with locals will introduce us to typical Piedmontese dishes and tell us the secrets about their preparation.

What is more, the region of Piedmont is also well known for its excellent cheese. Therefore, a visit to a cheese dairy and cheese tasting is a must. During a wine tasting in Castagnole Monferrato we will dive into the tradition of local wine making and taste typical Piedmontese wines with their excellent flavor and quality. What must not be missed on a culinary journey through Piedmont is truffles! Therefore, we visit the famous truffle fair In Alba – city of the white truffle.

Relaxing stays in a hotel in the historic centre of Turin and a cosy agriturismo in the Asti area complete the gourmet tour. What is more, the tour is offered in the comfort of a small travel group with private transport all along the route.

Itineraries

Arrive milan and transfer to trento.

Welcome to Italy! At the airport, you will meet your private English-speaking driver who will accompany you to the central station where you catch the train to Trento. At Trento station, your driver will be waiting for you and will transfer you to your accommodation. Trento is one of the top Italian cities in terms of quality of life and the environment, it hosts events all year round and is the perfect starting point to discover the rest of Trentino. History, culture and nature: these are the three pillars that form the foundation of Trento: a city with about 117,000 inhabitants and the capital city of Trentino-Alto Adige. The history is that of the prince bishops, for centuries unrivalled signori of this flourishing city, a meeting point between the Mediterranean and continental worlds, which in the Sixteenth century hosted the famous ecumenical Council. Culture is alive thanks to the prestigious University, to the MUSE - the world-famous museum of natural science, to the Castello del Buonconsiglio, to the precious Museo Diocesano, and to many other museums and historical sites worth visiting. As far as nature is concerned, just take a look around: massive mountains embrace your gaze, trees and parks make the city centre breathe, and the Sardagna waterfall makes the view of the city unique.

Trentino Wine Experience

Today, awaits an amazing experience! Your driver will take you on an experience that combines the excellence of Trentino’s wines and its centuries-old fortresses: you will discover medieval places suspended in history and you will taste some of the top-quality wine products of this land. You will follow the natural and cultural path with the renown Brut and Rosé Trento Doc to the Vallagarina, proud land mother of the De Tarczal’s Marzemino. You will enter into one charming Castle and proceed to the green Valle dei Laghi, where you can enjoy the strong notes of Reboro wine and the ones of Vino Santo. Then you will come down along the green slopes of Monte Corona and cross the beautiful Piana Rotaliana, site of the prestigious Rotari and Donati wineries. After this journey through some of the best wines of Trentino, enrich your experience with a visit to one of the Castles of the Provincia Autonoma di Trento. From Castle Beseno, the biggest and oldest fortress of the region, to Castle Stenico, a charming manner that keeps jealously its precious treasures; the visit continues to Castel Thun – a beautifully furnished residence of an illustrious family – and to Castel Caldes, a manner that combines the severe appearance and architectural elegance. At the last stage of this journey, the well-known Castello del Buonconsiglio, a sumptuous residence of the Prince-Bishop and casket of the frescoed-cycle ( “Cycle of the Months” ) kept inside its 14th-century tower, Torre Aquila. This is a wine and history experience to get the best of Trentino’s cultural heritage.

Trento - Free Time

A free day to explore the beautiful surroundings of Trento here are some suggestions... First head to Piazza Duomo. Here, you can stop under the Fountain of Neptune for a photo of the impressive Duomo [Cathedral] of Trento, with the mountains in the background. On its left-hand side, with castellated walls and the high Torre Civica, lies Palazzo Pretorio, home of the Diocesan Museum of Trento. Now you can walk around the fountain to admire the beautiful Renaissance frescoes on the Cazuffi Rella homes, focused on the themes of Justice and Luck. After sipping a coffee at one of the bars overlooking the piazza, you can decide whether to visit the Duomo or to walk along Via Belenzani, to admire the frescoes of Palazzo Alberti Colico, Palazzo Thun, and Palazzo Geremia. Another stop in Trento must necessarily be at Castello del Buonconsiglio, an elegant and robustly fortified castle, a ten-minute walk from the piazza. For centuries, the castle was home to the prince bishops of Trento, and today it hosts numerous art and archaeology collections, as well as contemporary exhibitions. Don’t forget to visit Torre dell’Aquila: the walls of the tower depict the Cycle of Months, a precious testimony of Gothic art. Just outside of the historical centre, we suggest you visit the Gallerie di Piedicastello and the Gianni Caproni Aviation Museum.

Today you will enjoy a full day exploring the world-famous Dolomites region. Your driver will take you to the romantic Ega Valley, and to legendary Carezza Lake, from Catinaccio to Sass Pordoi. You will marvel at the stunning views of the tops of the Dolomites. At each of the stops, you will have some time to take pictures and there will also be a stop at the local cheese producer. Formae Val di Fiemme, the heart of Fassa (Cher de Fascia, in Ladin) and Primiero are three local kinds of cheese produced respectively in the valleys of Fiemme, Fassa and Primiero. They are all produced using similar processes, falling into the category of washed-rind cheeses and with the same raw materials: only milk, curd and salt. What makes them different from each other is only the milk which, when used raw, makes each wheel of cheese unique, keeping the DNA of a specific territory, pasture area or cattle alive. They are available fresh or seasoned on the pastures themselves, acquiring a characteristic yellow color and a smell of grass and flowers from the pasture. Enjoy and taste the Italian cheese! At the end of the tour, your driver will take you to your accommodation.

A free day to explore the beautiful surroundings of Trento

Today, after breakfast, you will check out from your hotel to be transferred to your next fabulous destination, COMO, the place with one of the most beautiful lakes in northern Italy. Immerse yourself in the marvelous landscape and architecture of Lake Como!!!!! You will make the transfer by first-class train. At the station, your private driver is waiting for you and will transfer you to your accommodation. In this elegant city center you will find not only historical monuments, places to shop and relax, but also a perfect lakefront for a quiet walk on the water. Stroll in the city center and discover the majestic Cathedral in white marble, walk in the elegant Via Vittorio Emanuele and admire the medieval walls and the church of Sant'Abbondio, in Romanesque style. See the magnificent 600-year-old cathedral; and discover the traditional shops and elegant boutiques of Piazza Cavour, Via Plinio and the lakefront. It skirts the lake up to Villa Olmo, from whose gorgeous garden you will embrace a magnificent view of the lake and the city.

In reality, this mild climate is ideal for cultivation. On the island, you can admire the remains of the glorious past of the territory. Barolo & Barbaresco Wine Route

Today a tour on the wine route of this enchanting region awaits you. You driver will take you to discover the production techniques of these fine wines known all over the world! Home to UNESCO–listed wineries including Langhe, Monferrato, and Roero, Piedmont ranks among Italy’s most productive winemaking regions—but knowing where to find the best of them requires local knowledge. On this tour, spin through the countryside with your guide and visit some of the vineyards and cellars for which Piedmont is famous. Sample the diverse wines in production and find out what makes Piedmont wines so special. Visit local wineries to sample wines like Dolcetto, Barolo and Barbaresco. You will lunch in an amazing scenery with a platter of locally-made cheeses and meats while you sip. You will see also a beautiful castle! Learn why the Piedmont vineyards of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato are so special - they were named to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2014. Barbera is the straightforward, easy-going charmer of Piedmont’s famed local grapes, Nebbiolo is the ornery intellectual: It may reward lovers with a deeper, more meaningful encounter—but not without a fight. Like Pinot Noir, the thin-skinned grape thrives in cooler climates. It’s often the first to bud and last to ripen, resulting in full-bodied wines with delicate aromas, yet intense tannins and high acidity. In both farming Nebbiolo and experiencing it in the glass, there is nothing easy about this grape. Which is why fickle Nebbiolo is perfect for expressing subtle differences in terroir— especially in the Langhe subregion of Piedmont, where soils and microclimates can differ greatly within a few footsteps. In fact, as in Burgundy, a single Langhe plot might be divided up amongst multiple vineyards. Growing the grape in Barbaresco or Barolo will produce very different wines—even though the two famous DOCGs are only fifteen miles apart. Barbaresco lies closer to the Tanaro River at a lower altitude; with its warmer temperatures, the region harvests its grapes earlier than Barolo. Both regions have soils rich in lime and clay, but Barbaresco has sandier, less compact soils that are richer in nutrients, resulting in fewer tannins, and softer, more approachable wines than the heartier, firmer products of neighboring Barolo. At the end of the tour, your driver will take you back to your accommodation in Turin.

Transfer to Milan

Today, after breakfast, you will check out from your accommodation to be transferred to your next fabulous destination, Milan. You will make the transfer by first-class high-speed Freccia Train. At the station, your private driver is waiting for you and will transfer you to your accommodation. With its various industrial sectors, it is considered the main industrial city in Italy. Milan is like a magnet for designers, artists, photographers and models. It also has a beautiful and ancient town center dotted with palaces and monuments, a reason that pushes every day millions of visitors from all over the world to visit the city of charm. Enjoy your free time exploring the city!!

After breakfast at your hotel, you will need to check out because it is time to say “Arrivederci” to Italy! Your English-speaking driver will accompany you to Milan airport in time for you to embark on your flight back home. We are sure you will have enjoyed your “Italian Lake District Gourmet Tour” and we sincerely hope to see you again soon for another delicious experience!

Greece has been my summer Mecca

Today air travel has become fraught with problems but I still travel a lot, and for me the arrival more than makes up  for the 'travelling hopefully'. Certain places make me feel I have known and loved them in another lifetime while others are excitingly alien. Greece has been my summer Mecca for many years, demanding a yearly pilgrimage, and in the last few years I have started to add  gastronomic tours to those countries I explored while researching my  Mediterranean book. I fell in love with India through books, long before my first visit, and the many trips I made while writing my Indian cook book added another perennial pleasure.

These tours have some cooking, but the emphasis is on finding the good food and enjoying the most appealing aspects of these fascinating countries.

gourmet tour italien

View Lake Bracciano from several vantage points, including the towns of Trevignano Romano and Bracciano. One of the largest, clearest bodies of water in the region, Lake Bracciano is volcanically formed unlike the glacial lakes to the north. A natural reserve of forests and olive groves borders much of the lake making for a serene setting, especially since motorized boats are prohibited. You will enjoy a bit of free time in Trevignano Romano, one of the three main towns along the lakeshore. You might walk the lengthy waterfront promenade, stop in one of the cafés for coffee and a snack or simply spend the entire time gazing out over the turquoise waters. Afterwards, you will drive to the town of Bracciano – home to the landmark medieval castle Orsini-Odescalchi – for a multi-course lunch of classic Italian cuisine at a restaurant right on the lake.

• Explore beautiful Lake Bracciano, a brilliant blue volcanically formed body of water. • Spend free time in Trevignano Romano and perhaps stroll its lakeshore promenade. • Dine at a restaurant partially built on stilts directly over the shoreline of Lake Bracciano.

After wowing us with custom looks from luxury labels, like Jacquemus, Vivienne Westwood and Thom Browne, Zendaya has now thrown us a curveball: a laid-back ensemble to remind us that even sans runway attire, she remains the ultimate style muse.

At a private screening of Challengers , directed by the Italian auteur Luca Guadagnino, the actor made a striking entrance in what might be her most understated red-carpet look in recent memory. Sporting a grey T-shirt emblazoned with the words “I Told Ya”–a nod to her character Tashi in the film (co-star Josh O’Connor wore a bespoke Loewe button-down version at the London premiere earlier this month)–Zendaya paired it with sleek black tailored trousers, an oversized grey trench coat and a pair of white Bottega Veneta mesh Atomic flats.

While we anticipate more high-fashion moments from Zendaya as the press tour unfolds, this refreshing casual interlude has done her (and us) a world of good, priming us to fully appreciate the fabulousness that lies ahead.

Tchaikovsky: Capriccio Italien, Op. 45 (Digitally Remastered)

Moscow RTV Symphony Orchestra and Choir & Gennady Rozhdestvensky

1 SONG • 15 MINUTES • AUG 14 2015

  • TRACKS TRACKS
  • DETAILS DETAILS

Rozhdestvensky was the son of conductor Nikolai Anosov Rozhdestvensky and soprano Natalya Rozhdestvenskaya. A pupil at the Gnesin School of Music and the Moscow Conservatory school for children, he entered the Conservatory in 1941 to study conducting with his father and piano with Lev Oborin. While still at the Conservatory, Rozhdestvensky conducted Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker at the Bolshoi Theater. Following his graduation in 1954, he was appointed assistant conductor at the Bolshoi and in 1956 made his first visit to England with the Bolshoi Ballet. In 1961, Rozhdestvensky was named artistic director of the Soviet Radio Symphony Orchestra, remaining there until 1974. Three years later, he became Bolshoi's youngest principal conductor, remaining at that post until 1970. During the Soviet era, Rozhdestvensky programmed music by contemporary foreign composers, most likely alienating the Soviet musical establishment; nevertheless, as chief conductor and director of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, he was allowed to lead performances of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as works by Poulenc, Hindemith, Orff, and other composers that were new to Soviet audiences. He also revived the symphonies of Sergey Prokofiev, who was regarded with suspicion in Russia, having lived in America from 1918 to 1936. Only the most eminent and respected Russian musicians were allowed extensive foreign tours, and Rozhdestvensky visited many European countries, the U.S., and Japan. He also appeared several times in Britain, mainly with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and at Covent Garden. In 1971, he conducted the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in three Promenade Concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall. The following year, Rozhdestvensky became music director of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Artistic director of the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974-1977, he was principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1978 to 1981. His next post was principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, where he stayed until 1983. In 1982, he founded, and became chief conductor of, the State Symphony Orchestra of the Ministry of Culture in Moscow. In 1987, Rozhdestvensky started teaching conducting at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Sienna. The Stockholm Philharmonic hired him as conductor in 1991, and three years later he was appointed chairman of the Bolshoi's artistic committee. Rozhdestvensky maintained his reputation for adventurous programming in his many recordings and live performances. Known for his balanced and refined interpretations of Romantic and 20th century music, he premiered numerous 20th century works, including Denisov's Symphony for two string orchestras and percussion (dedicated to Rozhdestvensky), Buzko's White Nights, Shchedrin's Carmen Suite, Prokofiev's opera The Gambler, Schnittke's Symphony No. 2 "St. Florian" and Gerhard's Don Quixote. An enthusiastic champion of contemporary composers, Rozhdestvensky also performed works by Kancheli, Mirzoian, Organesian, and Skoryk. Rozhdestvensky's writings include Techniques of Orchestral Direction and Reflections on Music. He was married to Viktoria Postnikova, a pianist.

Cannes Competition Title ‘Grand Tour’ Debuts Trailer, Director Miguel Gomes’ Next Film to Be ‘Savagery’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Grand Tour

Variety has been granted exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Portuguese director Miguel Gomes ‘ “Grand Tour,” which will have its world premiere in Cannes Film Festival’s Competition section. Variety can also exclusively reveal that that distribution on “Grand Tour” will be handled in France by Tandem, and in Italy by Lucky Red, and that Gomes’ next film will be “Savagery.”

Popular on Variety

“Grand Tour” is produced by Uma Pedra No Sapato (Portugal) in co-production with Vivo Film (Italy), Shellac Sud (France) and Cinema Defacto (France), in association with The Match Factory (Germany), Rediance (China) and Creatps Inc. (Japan), and with the participation of ZDF/ARTE and RTP.

Gomes was previously in Cannes in 2015 with “Arabian Nights” and in 2021 with “The Tsugua Diaries.” His 2012 film “Tabu” played at the Berlinale.

Speaking to Variety , the film’s producer Filipa Reis explains how the project came together.

It was over dinner with Reis that Gomes first presented his idea for the film, in which narrative sequences shot in a studio would be intercut with footage of contemporary Asia. “The idea was… I don’t know… very appealing and charming,” says Reis, who was a co-producer on “The Tsugua Diaries.” Gomes then asked her to produce it.

The plan was for Gomes to take a small documentary-style crew to seven Asian countries – Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Japan and China – shooting in 16mm so “that we could build this archive and then to write the script according to what was found,” Reis says.

Once those funds were in place, Gomes shot the narrative sequences in studios in Portugal and Italy in early 2023.

Reis says it was a “challenge” to do the Asia trip without a script, adding “it’s not as it’s meant to be in the industry, but it was also very appealing.” She adds that it required “a risk” to be taken to shoot the archive footage before applying to the production funds.

Asked how working with Gomes compares with working other directors, she says: “He’s very unique. And I think to work with him, you really have to be very confident about what he’s doing, because it can be a proposal that’s a bit outside the box compared with the way you are used to doing things, and the way the funds and the industry thinks things are supposed to be done.”

During the studio shoot they had “links to some rough edit archive footage, so that when you read the script, you could understand at least how [the narrative footage] crossed over with the archive,” she says. The narrative sequences are in Portuguese, except for one character who speaks in French. The archive footage is in the language of the country that the crew were shooting in.

Although the story takes place in Asia during a time of imperial rule in many countries colonialism isn’t the theme, Reis says, in contrast to “Tabu.” “I would say that it’s something new. Of course, ‘Tabu’ is a great film, but I think this one will be surprising,” she says, enigmatically.

As to the tone of “Grand Tour,” Reis says that it contains both comedy and tragedy, “but it is also melancholic, and it is courageous.” She adds: “I think it has a lot of emotional elements for us to make a connection with it.”

The film was finished in October, and shown to Cannes in November. A world premiere at Cannes was always “Plan A,” Reis says, adding: “I feel as a producer that it’s where the film is supposed to be, and where Miguel is supposed to be.”

At present no preview screenings are planned, although that may change, and Gomes isn’t doing press interviews before the world premiere. “We would like it if the film was discovered by everyone at the same time,” Reis says. “I’m a bit anxious to see how it will be received, and we are very curious about that. So it would be nice if we could make a surprise and share our enthusiasm and our surprise with the audience.”

Reis says that her next project as a producer will be Gomes’ Brazilian-set film “Savagery,” which will be co-produced by Tatiana Leite in Brazil. Further details about the project will be released at a later date.
