Huntsville’s identity has been shaped by the military, and it wouldn’t be nicknamed “Rocket City” if it weren’t for Redstone Arsenal and the Von Braun rocket team’s pioneering work for the Army. The city is proud to be a military community that plays a critical role in the defense of our nation. More than many communities, the residents understand the sacrifices Service members and their families make.

Perhaps Huntsville’s understanding and appreciation come from the large number of local citizens who have served in the military. Maybe they still have the patriotic excitement that the space race generated in the 1960s.  Or, maybe the patriotism comes from the defense jobs that give many of their citizens a closer look at the price of freedom that the members of the Armed Forces pay. Either way, in Huntsville, Alabama, military members are celebrated in the highest regard. Whether you're planning your next family vacation or looking to explore on your own, Rocket City welcomes veterans and active duty servicemembers with a variety of attractions, events, and military discounts.

1. Veterans Memorial Park

The Huntsville Veterans Memorial, dedicated on Veterans Day, 11.11.11, honors and pays tribute to all veterans for their "Courage", "Sacrifice", and "Duty". The Memorial has become a hallowed place that inspires visitors to reflect, remember and honor veterans. It provides an educational venue to teach visitors about our military past, the cost of war, and sacrifices made to ensure our freedom.

2. U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum

The Museum is dedicated to promoting and disseminating the accomplishments of American military men and women. The emphasis is on participants of World War I and subsequent conflicts, whose survivors and families can use the Museum facilities to reminisce on their own experiences and those of parents, grandparents, and other close relatives. The Museum displays more than 30 historical military vehicles from World War I to the present, including the oldest surviving jeep, the Ford Pygmy.

Free admission is available for those currently serving in the United States Military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as Active Duty and Reservists, National Guardsman (regardless of status), U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and First Responders, up to five family members with valid ID .

3. Armed Forces Week

Each summer visitors are encouraged to take the week to honor the service and sacrifice of men and women who are a part of the armed forces both past and present. From concerts to softball games, food trucks to fireworks, you won’t want to miss these local events. Along with the festivities, several local attractions offer free or discounted admission to active and retired military and their families including the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Burritt on the Mountain, the Earlyworks Children’s Museum, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum, and The Weeden House.

4. Military Appreciation Nights at Huntsville Havoc and Trash Panda games

Whether you’re a Baseball or a Hockey fan, get your competitive spirit flowing at a local sports game. Both the Huntsville Havoc and the Rocket City Trash Pandas offer Military Nights with special pre and post game festivities and tributes to the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Additionally, throughout the regular season, present a valid military ID at the ticket office to receive $2 off on admission to any game .

Havoc Hockey : During Military Appreciation night Huntsville honors Veterans, activity duty, retirees, members of the National Guard, reserves and their dependents with free ticket vouchers to the game. The players will proudly sport custom designed military themed jerseys on the ice and auction them off after the game.

Rocket CIty Trash Pandas : Head out to Toyota Field for a Military Tribute Night in partnership with Redstone Arsenal. Fans will be awestruck by the pregame activities featuring a parachute team, color guard, flag presentation and more. Finish the night with a patriotic firework display and live music performance.

5.  Military Camping Only at Redstone Arsenal

The sky’s the limit for your next family-friendly vacation. Enjoy the great outdoors while relaxing in the comfort of your RV (or tent) at Redstone Arsenal MWR RV Park. The campground is exclusively for active or retired military, DoD civilians and NASA employees.

6 . Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country during Memorial Day Weekend. Take a stroll through Huntsville and visit the museums, monuments, and memorials on an interactive journey of U.S. military history. Stop and see the oldest surviving military Jeep in the world at the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum or grab a picnic and head to the park for a relaxing day of remembrance.

7. Veterans Day Celebration

November 11th in Huntsville is a special day thanks to the longtime partnership between the local residents and military community in the area. Along with special celebrations like the Veterans Day Parade, Veterans Day Breakfast, and Veterans Dinner, many local businesses and restaurants will offer deals for veterans and specials to celebrate the day.

Whenever we move to a new base, I always enjoy our first visit to the Information, Tickets, and Tours (ITT) office. This is where you can get special military discount tickets for a variety of local attractions. There is an ITT office on most military bases. ITT should be your first stop when planning a vacation, day trip, date night, girls’ night, or anything fun!

The ITT Office is also a great place to visit if you are TDY to a base or you take a military Space-A flight to a new base you’ve never been to. They have the inside information (and discounts!) to help you have a memorable trip!

Save Money with ITT

Military Discount Tickets to Amusement Parks Across America

Many amusement parks offer special reduced rates for military families. But some of their special tickets cannot be purchased at the gate. You have to buy them in advance from your ITT office.

Here in California, we get amazing discounts on a huge list of attractions like Disneyland, Legoland, Sea World, and the San Diego Zoo. But no matter where you live, any base ITT office will have discount tickets for major national attractions like Disneyland, Disney World, Six Flags Theme Parks, or Medieval Times dinner tournaments. If we want to plan a trip or visit family in other states, our base ITT office also has discounts for museums and attractions around the country. You can find a complete list of national attractions at your local base ITT office.

Discounted Tickets to Local Tours, Sporting Events, and Tourist Attractions

The ITT office has tons of brochures, highlighting lesser-known local events alongside the major attractions. It’s a great way to get to know the area around your new base and discover a new part of the country after you move.

For example, the ITT office on our base has tickets for the movies, skiing at local resorts, wine tasting packages, major and minor league baseball games, and a Haunted Tour of the local city. Because of the ITT office, I learned that there is a minor-league hockey team nearby, and Urban Adventures (which are like scavenger hunts) in local cities. We even discovered a fun Pirate Dinner experience that would be perfect for my son’s birthday! The friendly lady behind the desk gave me lots of advice about local camping locations for children and taking a carriage ride through local wineries.

All these programs offer special military discount prices, which are sometimes not available on their websites. You can purchase tickets for any of the events by calling or visiting the ITT office on base and bringing a military ID . As a military spouse, I have been able to pick up tickets without my military service member present. This was especially useful when my family visited while he was deployed!

Military Discounts on Vacations

I was surprised to learn that you can use your ITT office to plan vacations or family reunions. ITT offers vacation packages with special rates for military families. You can get ski lift packages or a five-day pass to Disney theme parks . If you live near the coast, you can spend the day on a local tour boat or take a cruise out to an island.

To plan something more exotic, check out the Armed Services Vacation Club , which partners with ITT to provide discount vacations to service members and their families. The Armed Services Vacation Club can help you book a hotel or resort stays for special prices. Their most popular option is a week-long stay for $350 using space available (Space-A) options with partner resorts. Membership to the Club is free, but you can pay to upgrade and receive additional benefits. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway for two, or a weeklong family reunion, you will find the best deals through ITT.

ITT has Discounted Rates for Tours and Cruises Around the World

If you are planning something special for post-deployment or an anniversary, then ITT can assist you with a trip to remember anywhere in the world. They offer tour groups and vacation packages to popular destinations like Europe, the Holy Land, or China.

This is a great option if you don’t know much about the local culture or how to find your way around a foreign country. Traveling with a tour group means that your tour guide, accommodations, and some meals are already included. ITT also has package deals on popular cruise lines. So if you want to enjoy a luxurious vacation, but don’t want to spend a lot of time planning, ITT can make that happen.

Your local ITT office should definitely be your first stop, whether you’re planning a date night, a weekend getaway, or the trip of a lifetime. I love experiencing the different culture and local attractions at every military base we visit. The ITT office has helped me make the most of each location, while saving our family a lot of money. So what are you waiting for? Visit the ITT office on your base and start planning your next adventure today!

Have you used the ITT office before? What discounted trips interest you?

You unfortunately are not active duty or retired so you would not qualify for an ID card. The discount is only applicable for active/retired military.

August 21, 2018 at 10:49 am

i have called the itt office and they say that I have to have a DOD id card to get the discounts on tickets they offer. I don’t have one I was honorably discharged from the army and was not in for 20 years. How are people who serve 4 or 6 years able to get discounts. do they not count. Something needs to be done.

Ukrainian drones hit two air bases deep inside Russia in brazen attack

RIGA, Latvia — Blasts rocked two military installations deep inside Russia on Monday, including an airfield that served as a base for bombers allegedly used in Moscow’s relentless airstrikes on Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure. The attack marked Kyiv’s most brazen hit on Russian territory since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion nine months ago.

Russia’s airstrikes continued Monday with a fresh barrage fired at targets across Ukraine just hours after reports of the explosions in Russia, which occurred at the Engels-2 strategic bomber base in Saratov, on the Volga River, and at the Dyagilevo military air base in the Ryazan region.

The Russian Defense Ministry accused the Ukrainian military of orchestrating the blasts, which killed at least three Russian soldiers and injured four others. Kyiv did not claim responsibility but a senior Ukrainian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive operation, confirmed that they were carried out by Ukrainian forces.

In a statement issued late Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged the attacks and said its forces intercepted low-flying Ukrainian drones.

Both bases are far from the Ukrainian border and the drones would have had to travel up to 400 miles undetected to reach them — signaling a potentially serious security lapse by Russia.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that wreckage of the intercepted drones had “slightly damaged” the hull of two planes. The Washington Post could not independently verify the assessment.

Russian media first reported that a drone hit the runway of the Engels-2 strategic bomber military air base in the southwestern Saratov region, about 350 miles from the Ukrainian border, on Monday morning.

Two service members were injured and two planes were damaged, according to the Baza Telegram channel, which is close to Russia’s security services and the Interior Ministry.

Scholz phones Putin after diplomatic overture by Biden and Macron

Astra, a Telegram news channel, reported that the two damaged planes were Tupolev Tu-95 strategic nuclear bombers. The Tu-95s can carry the type of cruise missiles used to attack Ukraine’s infrastructure but normally play an important part in Russia’s strategic forces and nuclear deterrence capabilities.

The second explosion occurred at the Dyagilevo military air base in the Ryazan region, about 130 miles southeast of Moscow. Three people were killed, according to Russian state media reports. Tu-95 and Tu-22M nuclear-capable long-range bombers are stationed at the Dyagilevo base.

Kyiv’s unwillingness to claim responsibility for the attacks is in keeping with a pattern of Ukrainian officials being deliberately cryptic in their commentary following explosions in recent months at strategically important Russian military sites.

“The Earth is round — discovery made by Galileo. Astronomy was not studied in Kremlin, giving preference to court astrologers,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote Monday on Twitter, in an apparent reference to the two explosions. “If it was, they would know: if something is launched into other countries’ airspace, sooner or later unknown flying objects will return to departure point.”

Last week, Der Spiegel, the German news site, reported that the Engels-2 airfield was bustling with activity, probably in preparation for another missile attack on Ukraine, with satellite images showing rows of what appeared to be Tu-95 and T-160 long-range strategic bombers parked on the base.

If Ukraine indeed managed to reach two Russian airfields so far from its own borders using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the attack would mark one of Kyiv’s most daring operations to date.

“According to my information, the airfield in Engels was hit by the Soviet Tu-141 Strizh UAV,” Alexander Kots, a military correspondent of the Kremlin-friendly newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, wrote on his popular Telegram channel after the Russian Defense Ministry statement.

Kots questioned how the drones could have reached the bases undetected, noting that Moscow is within the same distance.

“So it freely crossed almost 650 km over the territory of the Russian Federation,” Kots wrote. “Was stealth technology mastered in the U.S.S.R. long before it became a trend? You know, there is less than 650 km to Moscow from the Ukrainian border.”

After Kherson, Ukraine’s military ponders new push south and east

Another Russian military blogger, Dmitry Konanykhin, described the strike on nuclear-capable bombers as an embarrassment. “Russia’s strategic nuclear forces can be beaten with penny drones.”

Within hours after reports of the two blasts, air raid sirens wailed all across Ukraine as Russia launched a new barrage of missiles.

At least two people were killed when a missile hit the village of Novosofiivka in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a senior official in the Ukrainian presidential office.

Many of the Russian missiles were destroyed by Ukrainian air defenses, but at least some of the missiles appeared to hit infrastructure targets and there were new reports of power outages, including in neighboring Moldova.

In Kyiv, authorities urged residents, many of whom expressed frustration and exhaustion over the repeated attacks, to take cover in shelters. Thousands in the capital city quickly headed underground including into subway station.

Rumors had been circulating for two weeks that Russia is preparing a larger-scale attack on Ukraine’s infrastructure, Georgiy Yasinskiy, a member of the Kyiv city council, said in a phone interview.

“People are smart — we’re not ignoring this one,” Yasinskiy said. “Everyone has been expecting this attack, but people are considering this one to be more serious.”

In a telephone call last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that the strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure were “forced and inevitable” because of Ukraine’s attacks on Russian targets, including the Crimean Bridge, and because of Western military support for Ukraine.

But Russia’s missile campaign, which began in early October, seemed to reflect Putin’s own recognition of his military’s failures and that he would not succeed in conquering and seizing all of Ukraine as he had hoped.

After failing to take Kyiv last spring, and then being ousted from territory they had occupied in the northeast Kharkiv region in September, Russian troops in recent weeks were forced to retreat from the city of Kherson in the south, despite Moscow’s claims that the city had been annexed.

Having fallen short of its battlefield objectives, the Kremlin now appears intent on leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity, heat and water during the frigid winter months — raising the prospect of a humanitarian catastrophe. The attacks, however, have only hardened the resolve of Ukrainians to repel the Russian invaders.

Pro-war commentators in Russia expressed dismay at the strikes on the two air bases.

“Such an unrequited and brazen strike on the base of one of the parts of the [nuclear] triad publicly demonstrates their vulnerability to simple conventional means of destruction, and shows that the combat security work has actually been reduced to zero,” Voenniy Osvedomitel, a popular commentator, said on Telegram.

Ukraine allows perilous Dnieper River crossings to flee Russian occupation

Some commentators called for even more brutal strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

“A massive humanitarian military strike against Ukraine has begun. … Its goal is to stop the terror attacks the Kyiv regime is conducting on Russian territory,” Sergei Markov, a politician and frequent pundit on Russian state TV shows, wrote on his Telegram blog. “One can even say there are a hundred Russian missiles in the sky flying there for humanitarian purposes. That’s what we need to call them. Humanitarian strikes, missiles of goodness.”

In Kyiv, Diana Ivanchenko, 19, and Sasha Zhelikhovski, 27, graphic designers, huddled underground after leaving the 28th floor of their downtown office building. They said they were tired of having to stop work because of the strikes, and Zhelikhovski said they might not get paid for a full day given the disruption.

“The most simple situation now is very difficult, just to live normal life,” Zhelikhovski said. “This is a huge problem.”

Dmitry Gyrenko, 35, had already spent more than an hour out of his workday sheltering at the Klovska subway station in downtown Kyiv. His power and water had shut off last week and had just started to come back over the weekend before Monday’s attacks forced him below ground yet again.

“I’m so angry — so angry,” Gyrenko said. “It’s enough.”

“We know for what reasons we’re suffering, and the sources of the suffering,” Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko said in an interview Monday at his office. Marchenko and his team were forced to take cover during the airstrikes Monday in the ministry’s parking lot.

“I don’t think poverty, life without water or electricity, or zero temperatures or below-zero temperatures, where heating is impossible, it can only create additional stubbornness in heads of our people who would prefer to be independent.”

Stein and Stern reported from Kyiv, Ukraine.
