The usage of digital technology has been aided by the growing number of Muslim tourists around the globe each year. The birth of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has shifted consumer behaviour and attitudes concerning the use of digital technology in their daily lives. The Halal tourism business is facing various hurdles as a result of the global economy's transition owing to technological disruption. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to explore the various digital technology utilised in Halal tourism as well as the issues that the business faces. Through the exhaustive study of existing research and contextual synthesis, cyber-physical systems, the internet of things, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and advanced robotics are among the digital technology utilised to boost Halal tourism. Meanwhile, Muslim tourists are at risk of safety and security, digital technology providers are facing a hard time keeping facilities up to date, Halal terms required standardisation and regional marketing programmes are among the issues Halal tourism stakeholders face in adopting digital technology. Since the research on Halal tourism is currently mounting, this study could contribute to that body of knowledge and provide useful information to both practitioners and scholars.

ISSN : 1759-0833

Article publication date: 17 May 2019

Issue publication date: 20 May 2020

The first problem when diving into this topic is the confusion caused by a number of terms intended to designate the same concept, in addition to the lack of a shared interpretation on what Islam requires from tourism services to secure their acceptability. This paper aims to contribute to the clarification of what halal tourism is, as it seems to be the most appropriate term to refer to practices allowed when travelling, in accordance with the Islamic law.

Design/methodology/approach

A synthesis of the current situation was carried out, based on the papers contained in Web of Science and Scopus databases. Moreover, a consultation of tourism experts was implemented to extract a number of practical implications for the promotion and development of this segment.

As the literature review suggested, halal tourism is a field of study that is still in a very early stage. In spite of this fact and the ambiguity found, halal tourism can be understood as the offer of tourist services designed to meet the needs of Muslim tourists in accordance with their religious obligations.

Practical implications

It is imperative to offer halal services (food, worship facilities, etc.) to attract this type of tourists. However, the diversity of interpretations has prevented the existence of one single certification. The lack of knowledge on this market is the main obstacle to overcome.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to clarifying the conceptualization of halal tourism. It takes a theoretical review and experts’ view as a preliminary step to study this topic in more depth.

International Journal of Halal Research

halal tourism journal

The International Journal of Halal Research is a refereed academic journal that aims to comprehensively integrate dimensions of knowledge conventionally regarded as separate and strengthen the efficiency of human intellectual progress. The journal combines scientific and religious aspects of Halal research and promotes universal values. While acknowledging the substantial progress made in the scientific fields, the journal is committed to the idea that the search for solutions to human predicaments can be enhanced by referencing an epistemological framework that is not restricted to reason and observation alone but acknowledges the role of religion. The journal is intended to provide a platform for research communities from different disciplines to disseminate, exchange and communicate within the Halal research scope and represents the diverse methodological approaches to Halal research and many subfields that constitute the discipline. It also intended to encourage methodological innovation by promoting experimentation in different qualitative and quantitative research methods. The IJHR covers theoretical and applied sciences and studies related to integrating scientific knowledge and religion. The journal is a compilation of academic and research articles, review articles, conference reports, and abstracts that address contemporary issues within its scope.

The halal lifestyle has become a global trend and is no longer limited to Muslims and specific religions. It refers to consuming halal products in goods and services that adhere to Islamic law (sharia). Therefore, halal products rely on halal food and tourism, finance, cosmetics, medicine, education, fashion, medical services, logistics, and arts and culture. As a result, halal goods and services offer enormous economic potential in Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population. However, the halal industry must first find innovative technology and solutions to numerous problems.

Hence, the subject areas to cover in this journal can be widely related to halal research. The subject areas will include but are not limited to food and beverages, cosmetics and personal care, pharmaceuticals, governance and compliance, media and recreation, travel and hospitality, and halal-related services, which may cover science and technology and non-science and technology.

This journal is published by the Indonesian Society for Knowledge and Human Development and follows UNESCO's recommendation on open science .
