Most of the hiking trails are also mountain bike and pet friendly. There are plenty of easy trails, most of which are at lower levels of elevation (for Colorado anyway!), so hiking is a great thing to do in Golden before you hiking at higher altitudes to help you get acclimated!

Our favorite place to hike in Golden is Golden Gate Canyon State Park . This park has several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty, from super chill hikes suitable for young children, as well as more moderate-to-difficult options. We particularly like the Raccoon Trail and the Blue Grouse Trail to John Frazer Cabin .

Pro Tip: Visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park in the fall to see the aspens turn their magical yellow hue!

Lookout Mountain Park and North Table Mountain Park are also great places to hike in Golden and are close to downtown. If you’re looking for more alpine and snow-capped mountain views, you should go to Lookout Mountain . If you’re short on time, head to North Table Mountain for views of the surrounding foothills, and, on a clear day, the Denver skyline.

This was one of the first activities Tim and I did in Golden. We had a great guide who was enthuasiastic and told us all about the history of the Coors family and the evolution of their beers. A highlight of the tour for us was visiting the brewhouse with its massive vats and machinery . The tour also includes plenty of samples , and we even got to keep the souvenir aluminum cups they served us with!

9. Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is one of the best things to do in Golden, Colorado to learn about the life of one of America’s most famous cowboys. The museum features exhibits about Buffalo Bill’s life and legacy, as well as a beautiful view of the mountains.

Located on Lookout Moutain , the Buffal Bill Museum features a variety of exhibits and displays that showcase Buffalo Bill’s life and achievements, as well as the history of the American West. Visitors can explore artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Buffalo Bill’s life, including his Wild West Show , which traveled across the United States and Europe, entertaining millions of people and shaping the world’s perception of the American West.

We also really enjoyed the short film that summarizes Buffalo Bill’s life and impact. It helped put the artifacts into context!

Tip: While on Lookout Mountain, don’t miss the Boettcher Mansion . This historic mansion was built in 1917 and features beautiful architecture amidst mountain views.

During the festival weekend, local businesses offer special pet-friendly packages, so if you travel with your pup and plan to visit Golden in February, be sure to check it out!

14. Dine in a Yurt at Sherpa House

The Sherpa House Restaurant is a unique and authentic Nepalese and Tibetan restaurant owned and operated by a Nepalese family who bring their cultural heritage and culinary expertise to the menu.

The atmosphere at Sherpa House is warm and inviting, with traditional Nepalese decor and cozy seating. The menu features a variety of dishes that are inspired by the Himalayan region, including popular Nepalese and Tibetan dishes such as momos, curries, thukpa, and tandoori . There aren’t many options for South Asian cuisine in Golden, but thankfully Sherpa House overdelivers with a unique and authentic atmosphere and delicious food!

Tip: Ask if there is any available seating in the yurt for a unique dining experience at the Sherpa House!

15. Grab a slice at Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza is a popular wood-fired pizzeria located in downtown Golden, Colorado. This locally owned and operated restaurant is known for its delicious, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and its warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a local favorite , so get here early on weekends if you want to dine in! Otherwise, we recommend picking up a pizza to go and enjoying a picnic in one of Golden’s parks or along the Clear Creek.

16. Enjoy a fancy coffee at Windy Saddle Cafe

The Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy and welcoming cafe downtown that offers a range of delicious breakfast and lunch options. What won me over, however, were the fun and unique coffee and espresso drinks they serve. My personal favorite is the Gold Digger , inspired by Golden’s mining history and made with espresso, caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and milk. It’s dessert for breakfast with a dose of caffeine!

The food menu at Windy Saddle Cafe features a variety of breakfast burritos , breakfast sandwiches , and quiches . Additionally, there is a bakery case that offers a range of fresh-baked goods such as muffins , scones , and pastries .

17. Get a Flight or a Growler at Barrels and Bottles Brewery

Barrels and Bottles Brewery is a charming craft brewery that offers a rotating selection of craft beers, as well as a selection of wine, making it a great spot for beer enthusiasts and non-beer drinkers alike.

Visitors can enjoy their beer flights and pints while sitting at the bar, at a table, or on the outdoor patio.

One unique aspect of Barrels and Bottles Brewery is their “Bottle Shop,” which offers growlers of craft beers and bottles of wines for purchase to take home. This is a great way to try some of their delicious brews at home or to bring a gift for a beer-loving friend!

18. Eat and Drink at Golden Mill

One of our favorite food and drink experiences in Golden is the Golden Mill . This fun and innovative food hall doubles as a serve-yourself brewery . When you arrive to Golden Mill, you put your credit card on file and they issue you a card to swipe at the food stalls and drink taps inside. It’s the easiest and most fun way to enjoy a variety of beers and sample food from several vendors. If you want pizza AND barbecue, you can have it at Golden Mill.

Overall, it’s a fun, laid-back, and social place to hang out and enjoy a few drinks and some bites. We especially love it in summer when you can sit on the patio and enjoy the views of Table Mountain.

19. Go to a concert at Red Rocks – or even a hike

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison, Colorado, just a short drive from Golden, is one of the most iconic music venues in the world, known for its stunning natural beauty and unparalleled acoustics. The amphitheatre is surrounded by stunning red rock formations that provide a breathtaking backdrop for concerts and events.

Red Rocks has been hosting concerts and events for over a century, and it has become an iconic destination for music lovers from around the world. Legendary musicians have performed at Red Rocks over the years, including The Beatles, U2, and The Grateful Dead.

20. Brunch at Cafe 13

Cafe 13 is my favorite brunch spot in Golden . It’s also my favorite coffee shop to work from when I feel like a change of scenery from my home office! The cafe specializes in serving up delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, along with freshly brewed coffee and tea. I usually order their loaded avocado toast with a cappucino .

In the summer, a coveted spot on the outdoor patio at Cafe 13 is the perfect way to start the day. But, if you can’t linger, you can grab and go as well!

Tip: Colorado is famous for its green chilli , and Cafe 13 makes their own in-house. Enjoy!

21. Golden History Museum and Park

If you’re a history buff , you won’t want to miss the free Golden History Museum , located in downtown Golden. The museum features dynamic displays that showcase the city’s collection of 15,000 historic objects, as well as versatile programming spaces and a hands-on gallery for families with young children. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m .

Near the museum and affiliated with it, you can step back in time and experience life as a homesteader at Golden History Park , formerly known as Clear Creek History Park . This historic site features original buildings from the Pearce Ranch , one of the largest ranches in the area in 1912. Stroll through the park and peek into real 1800s cabins, as well as other buildings from the ranch, including a barn, chicken coop, and two-seat outhouse. You can also visit the 1876 Guy Hill schoolhouse, which was moved to Golden in 1976. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m . Check out the events schedule to see when the buildings are open for visitors, and be sure to chat with the friendly volunteers who serve as interpreters within the historic structures. The park is located at 11th & Arapahoe.

23. See a Moon Rock at the Free Mines Museum

The Mines Museum , also known as the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum , is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in geology, mining, and mineralogy.

The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the history of mining and geolog y in Colorado and beyond. Visitors can explore interactive displays that demonstrate the process of mining and mineral extraction, as well as learn about the different types of minerals found in the region.

In 1974, Nixon gifted each state and 160 countries with two “Goodwill” moon rocks from the Apollo 17 mission. One of Colorado’s moon rocks has been on display at the State Capitol, and the other was thought to be lost until 2010. Now it’s one of the most interesting pieces on display at the Mines Museum.

This is a particularly great activity to combine with Dinosaur Ridge , since the two attractions are nearby to one another and align with a similar interest in paleontology and geology!

26. Drive the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

The Lariat Loop is a 40-mile Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway that combines several smaller roads, including Denver’s Mountain Park system, to offer breathtaking views of the Front Range. The Loop starts in downtown Golden, where you can grab a coffee or picnic to go and begin your drive up Lookout Mountain, a 4.3-mile road that climbs 1,300 feet with drop-offs and viewpoints.

The road continues to the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain . The loop then heads to Genesee Mountain Park and the buffalo overlook, where you can see Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo and enjoy a snowcapped mountain panorama. 27. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is one of the most beloved paved bike paths in the Denver metropolitan area and one of the best things to do in Golden! The trail spans 19 miles alongside the beautiful Clear Creek, starting in Clear Creek Canyon and ending at the South Platte River where it meets with another 40-mile paved bike trail. The route is shaded with trees for almost its entire length, offering a peaceful and scenic experience with the relaxing sound of rushing water.

As you ride along, you will be immersed in the history of the region, where the big gold strikes of Central City and Black Hawk were discovered in the mountains. The trail also passes by the Coors Brewery and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Are you unsure of the best time to visit Golden, Colorado? To be honest, Golden is an awesome destination year-round. And I’m not just saying that because we live there!

The spring months in Golden offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to explore the great outdoors without the summer heat. You can go hiking, and biking, and enjoy several other outdoor activities. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional snowstorms and rain, and some tourist attractions may not be open until late spring.

Summer in Golden brings warm weather, long days, and plenty of outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. The town also hosts several outdoor concerts and festivals. However, it can get crowded, with long wait times and lines at popular attractions, and temperatures can become quite hot.

Fall is undoubtedly the best time to visit Golden. You can enjoy mild and comfortable weather and the stunning fall foliage for which Golden is famous.

The winter months offer beautiful snow-covered landscapes, skiing and snowboarding opportunities at nearby resorts, and fewer crowds. However, some attractions may have reduced hours or be closed altogether, and the weather can be cold and unpredictable. What to Pack for Golden, Colorado

• Day Pack:  It’s so helpful to have a good day pack to carry everything you need. I’ve had the  Osprey Skimmer 20 for Women  for years and it’s held up on every adventure! And here’s the  Osprey Talon 22 Pack for Men !
• Water Reservoir:  If your day pack doesn’t have a water reservoir in it already, you can buy one separately to slip into your bag. It’s absolutely NECESSARY that you bring water with you on every hike. Here are our favorite  2-liter reservoir  and  3-liter reservoir !
• Sun Protection:  This is so important year-round – even more so in winter when the snow can reflect the sun back up to your skin, multiplying your exposure!  Sun Bum  is our favorite  sunscreen  brand.
• Hiking Boots : I always hike in my  Columbia hiking boots . I literally have these in multiple colors because I love them so much! You can’t beat the price for the quality, too. Tim always hikes in his  Foxelli boots .
• Socks : I started wearing these double-layer  Wrightsock  brand socks when marathon training years ago and have never gotten a blister with them! In winter, I might mix it up with  merino wool socks , too.
• Sunglasses : I love these  wooden frame sunglasses , so they are my go-to.
• Hiking pants : These  hiking leggings  are my favorite in winter. In summer, I usually hike in  biker shorts  or leggings.
• Moisture-wicking layers : I wear this  pullover  all the time (it went around the world with us in 2014 and is still in great condition) and their  wool t-shirts  are great base layers. There are also  SmartWool t-shirts for men !
• Jacket : I always pack my  Columbia jacket  when hiking in the mountains.
• First Aid Kit : An  ultralight first aid kit  is a must-have for every hike. You never know what can happen, and you’ll be glad to have a  first aid kit  if you need one!
• Camera : I always hike with my  Sony a7iii . It’s a great full-frame camera for capturing all of our hiking memories!
• Snacks :  Clif Energy Bars  are our favorite hiking snack. It’s got the perfect mix of carbs, fats, and protein to power us through our hikes!
• Trekking poles : Many people like hiking with trekking poles to reduce the impact on the knees, especially going downhill. These  Black Diamond Trail Back hiking poles  are really popular!
• If you’re hiking Golden in winter, you’ll want to bring a pair of  microspikes  and/or  snowshoes  with you. These will slide over your boots and keep you from slipping on icy portions of the trail. Trust us, you’ll be able to enjoy your hike so much more if you aren’t worried about falling on the ice or snow!

Just 30 mins west of Denver, Golden is a charming town with amazing access to outdoor recreation.

The mesas of the South and North Table Mountains flank the town, which is filled with breweries, shops, and so many more things to do in Golden, CO.

I’ve lived in Colorado for nearly 15 years, and I’m in Golden multiple times a week. I know Golden inside and out, so if you’re looking to travel like a local, not a tourist, I’ve got the inside scoop of things to do in Golden, Colorado for you in this post.

Where is Golden, Colorado?

Golden has an old west vibe with modern attractions and is surrounded by adventure in the foothills. Just a quick day trip from Denver , the town is home to the esteemed engineering college, Colorado School of Mines, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The list of awesome things to do in Golden, CO is a long one and features something for everyone, from outdoor concerts to brewery tours to museums to hiking, biking, and climbing.

1. Hit the Trails

One of the absolute most popular things to do in Golden, CO is hiking on the many amazing trails around town.

Explore some nice easy hikes near Denver on the Peaks to Plains Trail along Clear Creek or up the mesas of North and South Table Mountains.

Lookout Mountain offers a variety of excellent hikes, including Chimney Gulch, and you can head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park for more of the best Golden hikes .

2. Tackle Epic Climbing Routes

Another one of the main outdoor Golden attractions is rock climbing. Clear Creek Canyon climbing is some of the best sport climbing in the area, while North Table offers a mix of sport and trad on basalt cliff bands.

3. Tour & Taste at the Coors Brewery

Beyond the mesas and foothills, the main landmark in Golden is the Coors Brewery.

You can visit the brewery and take a tour of the facility and get to sample some Coors beverages, or sign up for just a sampling in the lounge.

Reservations are required, and the tour is $20/person while the tasting is $10/person.

4. Have a Pint at a Local Brewery

Golden attractions include a bunch of breweries beyond Coors.

• New Terrain – At the base of North Table Mountain, this popular brewery is a great stop after hiking or biking up the mesa and often features live music on its outdoor stage.
• Mountain Toad – Just a block away from Clear Creek, Mountain Toad features interesting beers and a homey vibe.
• Golden City – It’s all about the patio seating at Golden City, which offers excellent sours along with other brews.
• Cannonball Creek – Located off of CO-93, Cannonball Creek is convenient for a pit stop after hiking Mt. Galbraith or the west side of North Table.
• Barrels & Bottles – This fun spot has several of their own beers on tap, along with wine and their signature wine slushie. The original location is in downtown Golden, and there is now a second location in the Denver West area.

5. Seek Out the Speakeasy

If you prefer cocktails to beers, head to the Golden Moon Speakeasy.

Hidden, but not too hard to find, next to the saloon in Miners Alley, Golden Moon makes outstanding artisanal cocktails that change with the seasons.

6. Get Your Caffeine Fix

When you’re in need of a pick me up, Golden’s got you covered with plenty of lovely coffee shops.

• Windy Saddle – A mainstay in downtown Golden, Windy Saddle is a community gathering place serving tasting breakfast, lunch, & coffee drinks.
• Cafe 13 – A modern cafe with delicious egg dishes, salads, and sandwiches, Cafe 13 also offers a variety of mimosas and breakfast cocktails.
• Launch Cafe – At the junction of I-70 & Colfax, this is the perfect place to grab coffee and breakfast to go before heading out to the mountains for the day, although the charming space is great for lingering, too.

7. Tube Down Clear Creek

One of the quintessential things to do in Golden, CO is tubing down Clear Creek on a sunny summer day.

Bring your own tube or inflatable or rent from Golden River Sports, then hike up the Peaks to Plains trail to the put in and enjoy the refreshing water on your ride back down the creek.

Clear Creek is also one of the most popular places for white water rafting in Colorado. So if you want to kick it up a notch, you can hire a guide to take you rafting through the rapids.

8. Find Fossils at Dinosaur Ridge

A National Natural Landmark, Dinosaur Ridge is the top dinosaur track site in the country. You can see more than 250 dinosaur tracks, along with many bones and fossils.

9. American Mountaineering Museum

One of the unique things to do in Golden, CO is wandering around the American Mountaineering Museum and take in the climbing history.

The museum features a variety of exhibits including historical climbing gear and incredible photos. Admission is $7/person.

10. Explore Red Rocks Amphitheater

Visiting Red Rocks amphitheater is one of the very top things to do near Golden. Located in Morrison, right next door to Golden, seeing a show at this iconic amphitheater is definitely a Colorado bucket list item.

You can also check out some cool hikes near Denver by hiking the trails around Red Rocks, including the short but super steep Mount Morrison.

11. Golden History Museum & Park

The Golden History Museum & Park offer a view into how the town was built and how it has evolved over the years.

Visiting the museum and walking through the outdoor park is one of the fun free things to do in Colorado .

12. Bike Through the Foothills

Golden is a very bike-friendly place with plenty of trails to ride.

The under-construction Peaks to Plains Trail is a paved path that runs along the creek, while North Table Mountain, Lookout Mountain, and White Ranch Park offer plenty of hilly trails.

13. Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Delve into the history of “Buffalo Bill” Cody at this museum of the wild west. The museum is located at the top of Lookout Mountain, and admission is $5/person.

14. Lariat Loop Scenic Drive

Lariat Loop is a wonderful scenic drive near Denver . Head from Golden to Morrison to Evergreen and back in a loop that encompasses some of the best Golden attractions.

15. Golden Farmers Market

From June to October, local vendors sell produce, baked goods, and hand-crafted goods at the Golden Farmers Market.

Bring your appetite and some reusable bags to the parking lot of the Golden Library on Saturdays to check it out.

16. Satisfy Your Hunger & Your Taste Buds

Golden really is a foodie town, with local institutions and new food halls offering something for every palate.

• The Golden Mill – The happening spot in Golden these days, this food hall has an awesome two-story outdoor space and self-pour taps for drinks to go along with tasty meals from the food vendors.
• Sherpa House – A classic Golden restaurant featuring generous portions of extremely tasty Himalayan cuisine.
• Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza – You’ll almost always find a line out the door at this Golden institution with an all-you-can-eat pizza, soup, and salad bar. Don’t forget to put honey on your crust!
• Thai Gold – Get some delicious Thai food in a historic building in downtown Golden.
• Bob’s Atomic Burgers – This unpretentious burger joint is always full of locals and visitors building their own burger combos.
• Bonfire Burritos – You can’t beat Bonfire for an epic breakfast burrito to start your day or sate your hunger post-adventure. But order ahead online or be prepared for a wait – everyone knows that Bonfire is the place to be!

17. Stroll & Shop on Washington Ave

Washington Avenue is Golden’s main street and has plenty of shops to stop in, including Bentgate Mountaineering for your outdoor gear needs, Marrygrams for cute gifts and stationery, and both The Red Wagon and Blue Moose for local souvenirs.

18. Visit Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve

Well-located near Denver, Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve makes for a fun family day trip from the Mile High City. The center features cool, interactive exhibits that appeal to kids as they learn through exploration.

Then, right next door to the nature canter is a family-friendly trail that offers excellent views of the surrounding area. Afterward, visit the historic Boettcher Mansion. It’s over one hundred years old and is well worth visiting during a tour. Just make sure it’s open since it’s regularly used for private events.

19. Explore Windy Saddle Park

Popular among hang gliders and paragliders, Windy Saddle Park gets its name from the strong wind that blows through the area from the Continental Divide.

However, if you’re not feeling quite that adventurous then you can always explore 3.5-miles of hiking and biking trails. After all, top hikes through the area include the Lookout Mountain Trail, the Beaver Brook Trail, and the Mount Zion Trail.

20. Visit the Colorado Railroad Museum

Easily one of the best things to do in Golden, CO, the Colorado Railroad Museum is located on 15 acres of land that features Clear Creek flowing between the North and South Table Mountains.

Now, you could easily spend the day here since there are tons of cool things to explore in addition to the upper and lower gallery of the Depot Museum. But, highlights include scenic train rides, exploring the outdoor rail yard with vintage trains, visiting the Outdoor Garden Railroad, and more.

Local Tip: During the holiday season (starting in October) you can hop aboard the Polar Express and go for a cool train ride at the museum. Just be sure to book well in advance since tickets are very popular.

21. Explore Golden Gate Canyon State Park

This epic Colorado state park near Golden is home to a wealth of tree-lined paths that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

After all, this 12,119-acre natural oasis in the Front Range was initially founded in 1960 and features upwards of 42 miles of hiking paths, as well as 27 miles of biking/horseback riding trails.

However, some of my fave hiking trails through the area include the Raccoon Trail, the Mountain Lion Trail, and the Burro Trail Loop to Windy Peak.

So, grab those hiking boots and enjoy one of the best things to do in Golden, CO for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Local Tip: If you can try and visit during the fall since the Aspens turn a gorgeous yellow color.

Where to Stay in Golden

Golden is a great stop on a Colorado road trip itinerary and has a few excellent places to stay.

Get a room at The Eddy Hotel at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, The Golden Hotel right along the banks of Clear Creek, or the boutique Dove Inn downtown.

There is virtually no camping in the area, but the Clear Creek RV park is in a beautiful location along the creek and does offer a few tent sites in the summer.

Explore the buildings and shops in Historic Downtown Golden

Golden was originally settled as a Gold Rush town at the base of the Colorado Rockies.

The historic downtown district is where the city began and this area still looks as it did in the 1950s.

Clear Creek runs through the town and offers a peaceful setting.

On a visit, you will be amazed by the vintage beautiful look of this mountain town.

Many of the historic buildings are now home to businesses, shops, eateries, and bars.

Take a stroll, take a photo of the murals, shop on Main Street, and eat delicious food to enjoy the day.

The riverwalk is a great place to go for a stroll and enjoy the views of the mountains.

Seeing the legendary Coors Brewery is an incredible experience, even for those who are not fans of Coors.

The brewery tours are free and take about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Advance reservations are necessary and release at 12 am at midnight, so be sure to plan your visit well in advance.

The tours start at the parking lot and a tram takes visitors to the brewery.

You learn all about the history of Coors and see how the beers are made.

You can also see old photos and memorabilia on the tour.

At the end, you can try free samples as well as buy beers to take home.

The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly and make the tour super fun.

The museum also has several model railroads in the basement.

If you happen to visit on a steam engine rides weekend, you can go on a 20 minutes long train ride of the sprawling facility and learn about the history of the trains.

Starting at the Mines museum, you will find the Triceratops Trail.

This trail honors the very first discovery of dinosaur fossils in the world near Golden, Colorado.

It is a part of the trails at Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, CO.

The trails is 1.5 miles long, gravel trail that is very popular with families.

On the trail, you can see dinosaur tracks as well as fossils.

One of the unique things about the tracks here are that many of them are negative tracks or the undertracks.

The trail ends at Fossil Trace Golf Course where many holes are adjacent to dinosaur footprints.

Enjoy dinner at the amazing restaurants in Golden

Golden has some amazing restaurants that serve a variety of dishes.

One of the most popular spots is D’Deli which serves traditional deli fare with a modern twist.

For a touch of Mexican flavor, visit Table Mountain Grill and Cantina.

This cozy spot serves tasty burritos and quesadillas.

If you’re after Nepalese, Indian, and Tibetan cuisines, head to Sherpa House Restaurant and Cultural Center.

For a more upscale dinner out, visit the Buffalo Rose which serves up delicious burgers and seafood.

Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is an interesting place to visit in Golden.

The museum houses artifacts and memorabilia of the famous showman, Buffalo Bill Cody, who lived in Golden for several years.

You can explore his life through photographs, letters, guns as well as other objects.

After visiting the museum, be sure to take a scenic drive up Lookout Mountain to visit the beautifully preserved Buffalo Bill grave.

The incredibly scenic Lariat Loop Trail is a 40 miles long drive that takes you to the top of Lookout Mountain and to the grave.

The grave is located in a beautiful spot with stunning views of the city and plains below.

It is definitely worth a visit!

Go hiking at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve

Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve is one of the best free things to do in Golden, Colorado.

It is home to over 100 acres of amazing nature and wildlife.

The preserve has numerous trails that are perfect for hikes or simply just relaxing strolls.

To reach the summit, you can either hike up from the lower parking lot or take the twisting scenic drive of Lariat Loop all the way to the top.

You can explore several scenic spots along the Chimney Gulch trail which takes you up winding paths surrounded by wildflowers and stunning views of the city below.

Be sure to visit Buffalo Bill’s grave at the top of the mountain, it’s an amazing experience.

It is located in the old Golden High School.

While there are many hiking trails in Golden, the popular Clear Creek Trail is best for families with kids.

This is an easy 2 mile long paved trail along the Clear Creek.

The trail is perfect for biking, running or simply taking a leisurely stroll.

The path meanders through parks and neighborhoods with plenty of scenic spots to enjoy the natural beauty.

Many sculptures about the history of Golden are located along the trail.

You can also spot some wildlife along the way including birds, deer, turtles and other animals.

The trail is very well-maintained and is a great way to get some exercise in the outdoors while taking in the scenery.

Golden is a city in the Denver Area of Colorado . It sits at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and distance-wise is roughly halfway between the cities of Boulder and Denver . It is the home of the Coors Brewery, the Colorado School of Mines, and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

The city of Golden has a distinct country-western atmosphere due in part to its gold-mining history and in part to its proximity to the front range. A slogan often used to describe the city claims that it's "Where The West Lives". Also, an iconic, antique signboard draped over Golden's Main Street ushers in travelers with "Howdy Folks! Welcome To Golden".

In keeping with the general spirit of the Rockies, Golden is an outdoor, active town. It's not unusual to see kayakers lugging boats around town and playing in the mile long whitewater course that runs through town, or mountain bikers returning from a ride up to the surrounding hills.

Downtown Golden consists of a strip of businesses surrounded by residential neighborhoods. This commercial and business portion of Golden is relatively small, and can be driven or biked through, or even covered by foot, in a short amount of time. In fact, Golden is very alternative-transportation friendly, and groups of walkers or bikers are always seen moving through town. The downtown area is an active hub for area residents. Numerous events are sponsored there throughout the year. One of these is a weekly Friday night street party with music and local restaurants selling tapas and beverages. In August the city sponsors a popular fine arts festival. In 2012 professional cyclists will, for the second consecutive year, begin a day of racing in the middle of town.

Activities in Golden are usually split between visiting its historical sites including the Coors Brewery, and doing outdoors activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking.

• Clear Creek Whitewater Park . Along 10th St in Clear Creek. Considered to be the heart of the Colorado kayaking social scene, the mile long course in Clear Creek provides a playspot for both playboaters and slalom kayakers, as well as a plethora of tubers and boogie boarders. Even if you don't want to get in the water, head down to the park to watch kayakers ripping it up in the holes some of the best kayakers in the state practice here on a regular basis. If you want to try kayaking, local kayak school RA Guides provides lessons here regularly during the summer months, or, if you having boating experience, kayaks can be rented from either of the two river stores in town, Golden River Sports or Alpenglow. The park is beginner friendly and folks are more than happy to help out newcomers, as long as you have some common sense and basic courtesy. Look but don't touch others' boats, wait your turn and be safe.

15 Fun Things To Do in Golden CO That Won’t Break the Bank

If you are planning a trip to Golden and don’t want to miss any of the must-sees but also don’t want to spend the earth, then keep reading to find out the best things to do in Golden CO – all of them free or inexpensive!

Golden is a sweet mountain town in Colorado that has lots of character, a fun gold rush history, and lots of natural beauty. It is nestled in a river valley at the base of the iconic Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by small mountains that are perfect for hiking . 

It is only a twenty-minute drive from Denver but it feels like you are a world away – so it’s no wonder that it is such a popular day trip destination. Golden is deserve dly popular and I always recommend people add Golden to their Denver Itinerary . – it is one of the best neighborhoods in the Denver area .

But there are so many things to do in Golden that you should stay longer if you can – you won’t regret it.

I put together a list of my favorite things to do in Golden CO that covers the best of what this beautiful town has to offer, from hikes and bike riding through to brewery hopping and delving into the town’s history.

I am a budget traveler so all of these experiences are free or inexpensive so you can stick to a lower budget while still having an awesome time in Golden.

I think there is something for everyone on this list, and I hope to inspire you to spend a couple of days or more in sweet Golden.

1. Hit the Hiking Trails

Hiking is my favorite thing to do in Golden and there are so many different hikes to choose from, starting with a flat and easy meander beside Clear Creek through to more difficult but rewarding hikes up some of the nearby mountains.

If you do one thing in Golden, make sure it is a hike, because this is the best way to experience the natural beauty of the area. Enjoy wildflowers everywhere in spring and early summer, and fall brings gorgeous golden trees.

2. Go Shopping

Golden may have a relatively small downtown core but there are a surprising number of great shops that you should definitely check out including gift shops, antiques, boutiques, consignment stores, outdoor gear, and more. 

My favorites are Rewind Consignments for gently used unique clothing, YoColorado for beautifully designed Colorado apparel and gear with a retro vibe, Marrygrams Cards and Gifts – I love their stickers, and Blue Moose Trading Company for fun Colorado souvenirs .

3. Do Some Brewery Hopping

Golden’s most famous brewery may be Coors but it is definitely not the only one, and it is definitely not the best. For a small place, Golden is home to a lot of breweries so if you love beer as I do, you definitely have to visit at least a couple of them.

As well as serving excellent quality beer, the other thing that is great about Golden’s breweries is that most of them are within walking distance of each other, so if you are staying in or near downtown Golden, you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving.

My absolute favorite is New Terrain Brewing Company , which is a little out of town but so, so worth it. I would recommend driving there first for one of their flights in their sunny beer garden and maybe lunch at one of the two rotating food trucks, then drive back to your accommodation downtown to walk to more. 

The best breweries in downtown Golden are Mountain Toad Brewing and Golden City Brewery , and I also like Barrels and Bottles Brewery and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company . The Eddy Taproom and Hotel is also a great spot with views over the town and a great beer and cocktail menu.

Hopping between these breweries on a sunny day with friends is one of the absolute best things to do in Golden CO!

4. Eat at the Best Golden Restaurants

Along with breweries, Golden is also home to some fantastic restaurants – this is even more true in the last few years with the opening of Tributary Food Hall and The Golden Mill – also a food hall with the best roof terrace in town, with river and mountain views. 

Other notable restaurants that you should try to eat at during your Golden trip are:

Sherpa House – A Tibetan restaurant and culture center that is super cozy inside and has a very affordable lunch buffet as well as an A La Carte menu with Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian options.

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza – Another great affordable buffet option with agreeable pizza and amazing beer cheese soup. This is a popular spot with families.

Bob’s Atomic Burgers – Basic but very well-made burgers in retro digs right by town – I especially love their fried chicken burger.

Bonfire Burritos – Awesome burritos including a massive breakfast burrito with green chile – mmm.

Humble Cafe – New to Golden in 2023, Humble Cafe is a coffee house that also serves a range of breakfast sandwiches, liege waffles, sandwiches, and salads.

Atomic Cowboy – Another recent addition to the Golden dining scene, Atomic Cowboy is a food hall/restaurant that is home to small Colorado chains Denver Biscuit Company for incredible breakfasts and Fat Sully’s for NY-style pizza.

Blue Pan Pizza – Another local chain that recently opened on the outskirts of Golden, Blue Pan Pizza does excellent Detroit-style pizza.

5. Go Tubing in Clear Creek

One of the most adventurous things to do in Golden is to go tubing in Clear Creek. There are lots of rapids in the section that runs through town but none that are too scary – well, they are just the right amount of scary.

You can either take your own tube or rent or buy one in town. The best time to go tubing in Golden is in mid to late summer – spring and early summer see dangerously high water levels and the creek is usually closed to tubing during this time.

If tubing is a bit too crazy for you, maybe just swim in the river. There are numerous spots where you can get in for a swim without being caught up in the rapids.

Relax and dry off on the rocks or make a day of it with a picnic in Lions Park or Parfet Park by the river.

6. Feed Your Mind at a Local Museum

Golden is home to numerous museums and you should definitely visit at least one of them if you are interested in learning more about the history of the area. Here are the main museums in the area that you can visit:

Golden History Museum – This museum by the Visitor Center is free to enter and although small, it is worth visiting to find out more about the history of the town of Golden. 

Colorado Railroad Museum – I haven’t been to the Railroad Museum but it is on my list. There are over 100 engines, cabooses, and coaches in this 15-acre rail yard, and they even do train rides behind a vintage steam locomotive throughout the year.

American Mountaineering Museum – My favorite museum in Golden because I have a bit of an obsession with everything mountain climbing. The last time I went, there was a great movie playing with Tommy Caldwell (The Dawn Wall) and Alex Honnold (Free Solo) climbing Patagonia’s Fitz Traverse.

Buffalo Bill Museum – Even if you don’t have a great interest in Buffalo Bill Cody or know much about his life, I think this museum on top of Lookout Mountain is still so worth visiting. It chronicles Buffalo Bill’s life and his famous Wild West Show, with lots of information and artifacts on display as well as a film that plays on a loop.

7. Visit Buffalo Bill’s Grave and the Boettcher Mansion on Lookout Mountain

While you are visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum, don’t miss visiting Buffalo Bill’s gravesite and the Boettcher Mansion – also at the top of Lookout Mountain and linked by short hiking trails.

Buffalo Bill’s grave is pretty unassuming to look at, but there was a lot of fanfare and controversy when Buffalo Bill Cody was buried on top of Lookout Mountain in 1917.

The famous showman lived in Wyoming for a long time and the town of Cody, Wyoming was even named after him as he was one of the founders.

There was a lot of uproar from Cody about Buffalo Bill being buried in Colorado, and the grave ended up having to be encased in concrete to stop bodysnatchers from Wyoming from stealing it away.

The Boettcher Mansion is a gorgeous example of the Arts & Crafts style in 1917 and was the summer home and hunting lodge of Charles Boettcher, a Colorado businessman.

You can do a tour of the mansion or just enjoy the gorgeous mountain views from the grounds for free.

For a real adventure, hike up Lookout Mountain from town. It’s one of the more challenging hikes in Golden but it’s gorgeous and absolutely worth it if you are relatively fit and have the time to hike it.

8. Drive a Scenic Byway From Golden to Evergreen

If you are a fan of scenic drives, then don’t miss the Lariat Loop which starts in Golden and links it to Lookout Mountain, Morrison, and Evergreen – two more of the beautiful mountain towns near Denver .

You can easily spend a day driving the Lariat Loop, stopping off along the way to check out lovely mountain towns, all the attractions on Lookout Mountain, and the numerous scenic viewpoints along the way.

9. Marvel at Dinosaur Fossils

The area around Golden is a fantastic place to see fossilized dinosaur footprints and imprints of prehistoric plants and bird footprints.

Do the short Triceratops trail right by town or walk the two-mile Dinosaur Ridge trail just outside of town to see even more impressive fossilized footprints and dinosaur bones!

Both trails are paved and easily accessible so are a great option for the whole family.

10. Experience Red Rocks

You can’t miss visiting Red Rocks Amphitheatre when in the area – it is definitely one of the best and most unique things to do in Golden.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the best places in the world to see a performance, with incredible natural acoustics and one of the most gorgeous settings, surrounded by jutting red rocks and with views all the way to Denver in the distance.

It is definitely a splurge to see a band perform here, but for a more affordable Red Rocks experience, go see a film on the rocks – you get to sit in the amphitheater and there is even pre-entertainment which is usually a comedian. Tickets start at $20.

Even if you aren’t able to see a band or go to a film, you should definitely still visit to check out the Amphitheater, the historic Trading Post, and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame – it’s free to enter all three.

You should definitely do one of the hikes at Red Rocks too – either the Red Rocks Trail or the shorter Trading Post trail which gets you up close and personal with these wondrous red rocks.

11. Go Back in Time at the Golden History Park

Golden History Park is a grouping of historic buildings, like a little village, right by Clear Creek.

The buildings are not always open – actually, they seem to hardly ever be open, but your best bet, if you do want to see inside, is to visit on a weekend in summer, especially a holiday weekend.

There is a school, various historic cabins, a blacksmith shop, and more. When they are open, there are costumed interpreters that will tell you about what life was like in Golden and other places in Colorado in the late 19th Century.

Even if nothing is open when you are visiting, it’s still a great place to take photos, peek in the windows, feed the chickens, and read the information panels to find out more about Golden’s storied past.

12. Buy Local at the Golden Farmer’s Market

I love a Farmer’s Market and always try to catch them when I am on the road because it’s a great way to get a feel for the community of a place, as well as supporting local businesses and farmers, and getting to sample delicious local produce and foodstuffs.

The Golden Farmer’s Market is on a Saturday and every time I have visited it is always bustling with locals and visitors. Grab a coffee, wander the food and art stalls, enjoy the live music, and treat yourself to breakfast or lunch from one of the food vendors.

13. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

As well as hiking trails, Golden is also a great place to bike, and the Clear Creek trail is an easy and pretty trail you can take as far as you feel like – you can connect with other bike trails and make it all the way to Denver if you wanted.

Bring your own bike or you can rent one from one of the many bike rental shops in town.

If you are feeling energetic, you can bike the 20 miles return to Wheat Ridge along the river – it’s a beautiful ride and you could stop off in Olde Town Arvada to check out the lovely downtown area there.

14. Enjoy the Best Fall Colors Close to Denver

Colorado is home to some of the most impressive fall colors in the country and fall is my favorite time of year here.

A lot of the more impressive fall displays are further into the mountains but there are a couple of spots in Golden that are definitely worth seeing in fall – especially Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

The fall colors at the park tend to peak around the middle of September to the beginning of October, but right in town in October, there is a gorgeous display of golden cottonwood trees along Clear Creek too.

15. Tour Coors Brewery

I have actually never done this tour myself as I am not a fan of Coors beer but I felt like I should add it as I have heard it is interesting, and you get a very generous tasting session at the end. You will have to tell me how it is, maybe I will do it myself one day.

Tours go for $20 including a tasting at the end, or it is $10 for tasting in the lounge only. 

So there you have it, all my favorite things to do in Golden CO – and none of them will break the bank. I hope you enjoy this gorgeous town as much as I do.

Where To Stay in Golden

If you are traveling in an RV or with a tent, you should definitely stay at the Clear Creek RV Park – it’s right by the river and only a few minutes walk from town. It books out fast so make sure to reserve your spot.

There are also lots of great hotels and cheap motels to choose from in Golden, stay at the adobe-style boutique Table Mountain Inn  right in downtown Golden, the newly-built  The Eddy Taproom and Hotel  which has mountain views and is perched on a hill above town, or  The Golden Hotel  on the river right in town.

The historic mining town of Golden, Colorado is nestled in the Clear Creek Valley between the North and South Table Mountains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city is home to a wide variety of activities and attractions including everything from white water rafting to fine dining with a walkable downtown area that is just waiting to be explored. Best of all, this charming town is located less than a 30-minute drive from Downtown Denver, making it an excellent spot for a weekend getaway.

Things To Do in Golden, CO

Established during the Gold Rush in 1859, the town of Golden has a long and fascinating history and it’s widely considered one of Colorado’s oldest and most historic towns. Washington Avenue, the main drag of Downtown Golden, is full of 19th-century buildings, locally-owned shops offering everything from high-end fashion to sporting goods, and a never-ending list of restaurants, bars, distilleries, and microbreweries. (It’s Colorado after all!).

If you are looking for something a bit more adventurous and want to try some of the outdoor activities that Colorado is famous for, Clear Creek is an excellent spot for tubing or you can try your white water kayaking skills at the Clear Creek White Water Park. 

While Golden has a lot to offer visitors in terms of amenities, it still manages to keep the small-town charm and beautiful nature that has been drawing visitors here for decades. Keep in mind that Golden is very pedestrian-friendly and as with many small towns, parking can be a bit tricky so it’s a good idea to park your car for the day and walk between the attractions. It can save you a lot of headaches and will give you the chance to really immerse yourself in the city.

1. Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum

Opened in 1874, this interesting museum offers Colorado’s most extensive display of fossils, minerals, gems, and meteorites, including Goodwill moon rocks from two Apollo missions, and is the state repository for Colorado’s mineral heritage. The Mines Museum of Earth Science contains more than 15,000 square feet of rocks and its own walk-through indoor mine. It also happens to be located within Colorado’s first public university. 

While you are there, make sure not to miss the Miss Colorado crown that is on display. It contains a whopping 600 gemstones and 21 diamonds. When the weather is nice, you can also take a stroll along the outdoor geology trail where you’ll find many fossils such as authentic triceratops tracks left behind millions of years ago. 

2. Coors Brewery Tours

No beer fan can visit Golden without stopping by the Coors Brewery, the largest single-site brewery in the country. The brewery has been producing beer since 1873, giving people across the country the chance to taste the Rockies. 

While you are there, you can conduct your own self-guided walking tour of Coors Brewery which means you can go at your own pace and take the time to enjoy the complimentary beers at the end. During this 90ish-minute tour, you can learn more about the malting, brewing, and packaging process and check out some old photos, historical beer cans and bottles, neon signs, and other memorabilia that are sure to bring a sense of nostalgia to at least one person in your group! 

3. Golden History Museum and Park 

With more than 15,000 historic items within its collection, the Golden History Museum takes visitors through the town’s humble beginnings all the way until the present day. The permanent exhibits include Epic Events, Legendary People, the Touch Gallery, and The Salon where you can find artwork made by artists who have a connection with the city. 

Near the museum, you’ll also find the Golden History Park . This fascinating living history museum brings together many of the original buildings from the Pearce Ranch that was located in the Golden Gate Canyon. The buildings were set to be demolished before the local community banded together to save this important piece of history. 

The Pearce Ranch was one of the biggest ranches in the area at the beginning of the 20th century. As you wander around peeking into the windows of 19th-century cabins, chicken coop, barn, and the two-seater outhouse, you can almost picture yourself as part of a homestead family. (You may want to imagine yourself riding solo in the outhouse though.)

There is also a schoolhouse dating back to 1876 located onsite. This one-room schoolhouse served the needs of local students living in the canyon until 1951. The buildings are open periodically throughout the year during special events. You can find a full schedule on the Golden History Park website.

4. Foothills Art Center

Housed in a late 19th-century Gothic church, this regional art gallery showcases artwork from local artists and attempts to inspire and engage the local community through “arts, education, and a creative exchange of ideas.” The Foothills Art Center hosts art shows, art classes for both youth and adults, and even has art trivia nights. It’s a great place to spend a rainy day and the location right in the center of Golden makes it easily accessible. 

5. Clear Creek White Water Park

Clear Creek Water Park was created specifically for canoeing and kayaking and is a great opportunity to get some white water experience without having to go too far outside of town. The 800-foot long course is divided into different sections where experienced paddlers can dodge boulders and clear drops. After you’ve finished the course, you can take things a little easier and have a quiet paddle further downstream. 

6. American Mountaineering Museum 

With so many soaring mountains around town, it probably comes as no surprise that Golden has been attracting mountain climbers for well over a century. Today, it’s also home to the American Mountaineering Museum . The museum’s permanent exhibits include items from Jim Whittaker’s 1963 ascent of Mount Everest and there are also rotating exhibits covering different eras in mountaineering history.

7. Colorado Railroad Museum

Without a doubt, the construction of railroads changed the course of American history and had a tremendous impact on the American West. Located about a five-minute drive from downtown Golden, the Colorado Railroad Museum attempts to showcase just how much influence the railroads had and what a marvel of engineering they actually were. 

Despite being built in 1959, the museum building is designed to resemble a late 19th-century train depot complete with protective eaves to shelter passengers from inclement weather and large windows so that the station manager could observe the platform. This gives visitors a small taste of what riding the train was like in the 1880s from the moment they arrive. The museum is full of family-friendly exhibits specially designed to help all visitors learn something new. 

Spread across more than 15 acres of land, the museum’s rail yard features a large collection of more than 100 narrow and standard gauge steam and diesel locomotives, cabooses, and passenger cars as well as a working roundhouse where trains are repaired and refurbished thanks to the hard work of museum volunteers.

The museum periodically offers 15-20 minute train rides in historic passenger cars on select dates from January through October. This is a great way to keep little kiddos (and train enthusiasts) excited so make sure to check their website for the most up-to-date ride schedule. 

8. Brews and Booze

Golden has a vibrant downtown with a huge array of cafes and breweries that can keep you fed and watered all day long! If you are needing a bit of a caffeine hit, look no further than Pangea Coffee Roasters . They offer a good selection of coffees, many of which are roasted onsite, as well as a delicious array of pastries and breakfast burritos. The atmosphere is relaxed with a lovely outdoor patio. It’s a popular spot with the local college students so try to come early if you want to grab a seat and relax for a bit! 

If you are looking for a different kind of brew, then you are in luck. (Trust us … we know it’s hard to visit Colorado and not be swept away by the vast array of craft beer on offer.) Golden may be small but it certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to beer. 

Golden City Brewery is a firm favorite with a laid-back atmosphere that is great for relaxing after a hard day of sightseeing. They offer a spacious dog-friendly beer garden where you can soak up the sun while indulging in your favorite blond or ale. If you want to try something really unique, you can even order a pint of their guava beer. It’s a bit tart but very refreshing on a hot day! The best thing about it’s that it’s right around the corner from the Golden History Park and the Mines Museum.

Interestingly, the brewery was started back in 1993 by a couple of geologists who opened their tasting room in their house. As their business has expanded, it has taken over more and more of their house and the beer garden was once their backyard. Now, that is what we call a successful passion project.

Another great option is the Barrels & Bottles Brewery . The brightly colored interior is light and airy and the atmosphere is lovely for a mid-afternoon beer and snack. There are more than 20 beers and 24 wines on tap, and a full food menu to help soak up some of the alcohol. Non-beer drinkers will love the wine slushies which can help you cool down on the hottest of summer days. 

If you are looking for something even more low-key, the Mountain Toad Brewery has a full outdoor patio with a rotating selection of food trucks giving you the chance to try something new every day. It’s also very dog-friendly so if you are traveling with your four-legged friends, they can come along.

9. Lookout Mountain

While it’s considered just a foothill of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, it’s pretty hard to miss Lookout Mountain as it stands proudly over Golden. This soaring mountain offers a plethora of hiking trails and interesting attractions, and no trip to Golden is complete without a visit. 

This 110-acre park is a great place to reconnect with nature through a series of interactive exhibits. The Lookout Mountain Nature Center offers visitors the chance to learn more about the area’s native flora and fauna as well as a kid-friendly playroom where kids can play with interactive, hands-on exhibits. There is a full schedule of free, naturalist-led programs held throughout the year or if you are feeling energetic, you can simply head out onto the trails to see what Mother Nature is up to!

10. Boettcher Mansion

The mountaintop Boettcher Mansion was originally built in 1917 to serve as a hunting lodge and summer home of Charles Boettcher, a German immigrant who was very successful at achieving the American dream and became one of Colorado’s most famous businessmen. 

Today, it’s a popular event venue for weddings and conferences. However, you don’t need to get yourself on a guest list to see inside. Thankfully, they are also open for self-guided tours! Despite being mostly used for event rentals, the mansion has been left much the same as it was in the early 20th century, giving visitors the opportunity to see how the “other half” lived during the Roaring 20s. 

11. Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Buffalo Bill Cody was born in 1846 and quickly made quite a name for himself as a skilled buffalo hunter. He eventually transitioned to showbiz and began to travel the world with his Wild West shows, which had a tremendous impact on how people viewed and romanticized life in the West. When he died in 1917, he requested to be buried at the top of Lookout Mountain where he could spend eternity overlooking the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. 

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave brings his story to life through exhibits featuring items from his life and famous shows, Native American artifacts including Sitting Bull’s bow and arrows, and an assortment of firearms. There is also an observation deck where you can get sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and interactive play areas for young visitors. 

Every February, the museum celebrates Buffalo Bill’s birthday so make sure to check the schedule if you are planning on visiting around that time to see what special events they’ve planned. 

12. Golden Gate Canyon State Park

With more than 35 miles of hiking trails and 19 miles of biking trails, the Golden Gate Canyon State Park is the perfect spot for nature lovers. The sprawling park has an incredible range of ecosystems including meadows, forests, and mountains with trails available for people of all fitness levels. If you want to spend the night sleeping under the stars, it’s also a popular camping spot with 152 camping sites located throughout the park, well-equipped cabins, and yurts (which are always fun to stay in). You may want to keep in mind that there is no cell phone service available in the park so make sure to plan accordingly. 

While you are in the park, make sure to keep an eye out for any wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see animals like moose, black bears, elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyote, bobcats, beavers, porcupines, and more. There is also a wide array of birds that can be seen flitting through the forest. 

A Bit Further Afield

After you’ve explored Golden and Table Mountain, it’s time to head a bit further afield to see what other fun things are waiting for you!

13. Eldorado Canyon State Park 

Stretching more than 885 acres, the Eldorado Canyon State Park offers a slew of outdoor activities less than a 30-minute drive from Golden. Rock climbers will think they are in heaven with more than 500 technical rock climbing routes to choose from along Eldo’s sheer walls.

If you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground while you are there, you can hike between sandstone cliffs or simply relax on the banks of South Boulder Creek. There are also opportunities for biking, kayaking, and cross-country skiing. Just remember that the park can get very busy. If you are visiting during the summer, make sure to come early as parking spaces are filled on a first come first serve basis. 

14. Dinosaur Ridge

Dinosaur Ridge is home to more than 300 dinosaur tracks and is considered the #1 dinosaur track site in the country. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs along two separate walking trails. The two-mile-long Dinosaur Ridge Trail features 15 fossil and geologic sites including Cretaceous period tracks and Jurassic period bones. 

Meanwhile, the Triceratops Trail is a 1.5-mile gravel trail that winds its way through old clay mining pits where you can find interpretive stops detailing the important fossils located there such as the three-toed Tyrannosaur track and four-toed Triceratops tracks. The track also showcases large palm frond impressions which serve as a reminder of the area’s past life as a wetland. 

15. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater

Not many cities can claim to have an amphitheater completely made of red rock formations and this stunning spot is certainly unique. While the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater is famous for having some of the world’s top musicians perform there, you can also find a full schedule of events ranging from yoga classes to film screenings. 

If you are unable to attend an event there, don’t worry – you can still stop by the visitor center to check out the Red Rocks Hall of Fame or pick up some cool souvenirs to take home with you at the Red Rocks gift shop. The park is located in Morrison just a 15-minute drive from Golden and can easily be combined with a quick stop at Dinosaur Ridge. 

16. Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities

With more than 10,000 square feet of gallery space, the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is one of the best places to go to experience the regional art of Western Colorado. Besides hosting free art exhibitions featuring Colorado-based artists, the center also showcases avant-garde “Black Box Plays,” Broadway shows, musical and dance performances, and workshops and classes. 

The center is located just a 15-minute drive from Golden. There is a full schedule of events on the Arvada Center website so make sure to check it out including case there is anything interesting going on while you are in town!

Spectacular Spots For a Day Trip From Golden

Thanks to Golden’s central location, there are many great destinations located within a 90-minute drive that are perfect for day trips. Below are just a few ideas of places to go. The Mile-High City needs very little introduction. From the historic Larimer Square to the lively 16th Street Mall, there are plenty of options for amazing food and even more amazing beer. 

If you want to spend some time outdoors, the botanical gardens are a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city or you can simply hop in the car and head out on a road trip. To discover more great things to do, take a look at our list of Denver guides . 

Evergreen is well-known as being one of the closest mountain towns to Denver and lies just 30 minutes from Golden. This inviting little town offers an array of restaurants and shops where you can easily spend hours indulging in delicious treats or browsing for interesting gifts to take home with you.

While the town itself is quite charming, the main attraction here is Evergreen Lake. This tranquil spot is popular for sailing, kayaking, and canoeing. If you want to get some miles in, you can walk to the lake from the Evergreen town center by following the tranquil Bear Creek Trail.

Located just 30 minutes from Golden, Boulder is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. One of the best places to start your trip is the brick-lined Pearl Street which is lined with historic storefronts and delicious restaurants and microbreweries where you can try some of the craft beers that Colorado is famous for. 

Just outside of town, the massive stone slabs of the Flatirons welcome hikers of all skill levels and the surrounding meadow is great for afternoon picnics. (Be sure to pick up some supplies at the farmer’s market in Boulder that is held every Saturday morning.) Otherwise, you can take a quick trip to Central Asia without having to leave the Flatirons at the Dushanbe Teahouse . This intriguing place features blue tiling and wooden decor and was actually created in Tajikistan.

If you want to get a different view of the Flatirons, Chautauqua Park offers picturesque views, miles of well-marked hiking trails, and a children’s playground that is great for kids of all ages.

When it comes to outdoor adventure, Estes Park is THE place to go. This small mountain town serves as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park where you can find miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and spectacular scenery. It also features a lively Riverwalk that is lined with locally-owned boutiques, bars, and restaurants and is the perfect place to relax after a long day on the trails. 

If you are a Stephen King fan, make sure not to miss the Stanley Hotel. This historic property was the inspiration for The Shining and was actually the filming location of the 1997 TV movie.

Head Out for a Scenic Drive

With a location as stunning as Golden’s, it probably comes as no surprise that there are some very scenic drives starting from just outside of town. It’s the perfect place to go on a mini-road trip. Below are just a few ideas of day trips that you can easily do from Golden. 

Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

This circular road was built in the early 20th century to connect Colorado’s growing park system and is a great way to see many of the highlights of Golden in one easy drive. The 40-mile Lariat Loop starts in Golden and then winds its way up to the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain where you can get 360-degree views of the spectacular landscape. 

From there, it goes by Buffalo Bill’s Grave before reaching Genesee Mountain Park where you can take a look at Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo hanging out in their favorite valley. The road then passes by the flying saucer-shaped “Sleeper House” featured in Woody Allen’s 1973 movie.

The road then passes through the charming town of Evergreen before heading back through Morrison and the Red Rocks Amphitheater and then circling back towards Golden. 

The Old West and Red Rocks Loop

This beautiful drive starts in Denver and weaves its way through the Clear Creek Valley before reaching Golden. From there, it winds its way over the Dakota Hogback. From there, it’s just a short drive to Dinosaur Ridge and the Red Rocks Amphitheater. The road then loops back to Denver or you can simply make your way back to Golden. 

Highway 93 and the Back Road to Boulder
