Big Boy steam locomotive rounds curve on a sunny day.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 made its 2023 debut in June and July with the Home Run Express to the NCAA Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Though a tradition for the Class I railroad to showcase its various equipment at the 12th Street display site outside Charles Schwab Field, this year’s honor was given to the massive 4-8-8-4 in its very first attendance to the sporting event since the 2019 restoration.

In a nearly month-long tour filled with unique highlights, the locomotive performed very well, according to Austin Barker, Manager – Heritage Fleet Union Pacific. “We always try to keep it in top operating condition,” he explains. “It’s almost like new every time we take it out.

“It’s a very reliable locomotive, built well, designed well, and we got a great team that keeps it maintained to a standard.”

Big Boy steam locomotive approaches tunnel.

The highlight of the eastbound tour took place right out of the gate after No. 4014 departed the UP steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyo., on June 7. At Egbert, Wyo., the train diverged onto the Yoder Subdivision for a rare-mile jaunt to Gering, Neb., before rejoining the transcontinental main line west of North Platte the following day. “Stuff you wouldn’t expect to see in the Wyoming/Nebraska area is a tunnel [Yoder Tunnel] out in the middle of nowhere,” said Barker. “It was isolated, peaceful, serene-type scenery, and having this huge locomotive that really wouldn’t have ever gone up there during regular service, it was unique taking it up that way.”

Of course, no one can talk about the tour without mentioning the morning of June 29 in Blair, Neb. Departing Council Bluffs, Iowa on the return trip to Cheyenne, the steam crew was contacted by the UP dispatch to see if assistance was possible with a stalled westbound manifest ahead of No. 4014. In an opportunity that set the online world buzzing, the Big Boy’s power was tested by pushing the freight train up Blair Hill with the sights and sounds Barker described as incredible.

“To put that kind of a load on the locomotive that it would’ve seen in regular service,” he said, “it was a highlight because we put so much time and effort to have it perform so well.”

— YouTube video contributed by Oliver Brehm.

According to Robynn Tysver, Union Pacific Spokesperson, an estimated total of 52,000 people came out to see the Big Boy during the entire tour. Of the total, approximately 30,000 visited the locomotive at its World Series display site during the June 15-26 stay. The attendance demonstrates the continual public-relations value of the railroad’s steam program and the goodwill presented by both Nos. 4014 and 844.

Even with the 2023 Home Run Express tour concluded after the train arrived back in Cheyenne on July 3, the work continues with thorough maintenance, inspections, and improvements to prepare the locomotive for its next assignment. “What we do when we come back from a trip is that it takes about seven days for the boiler to cool off,” Barker explains. “We’ll then completely drain it, go a bit further by taking apart every steam valve, and perform a boiler wash in association with a 31-day inspection by the Federal Railroad Administration.

“This will sometimes roll into an annual inspection, which goes even deeper with the locomotive and tender separated to inspect the drawbar and everything else rolled into it. It’s a lot of maintenance, but the way we do things, No. 4014 is almost like new every time we roll it out and even better than when we first rolled it out in 2019.”

Announcements, updates, and schedules for future trips can be found by visiting Union Pacific’s Steam website .

Did UP 4015 do any assisting?

Normally the air would be cut in and the brake valve cut out on the helper locomotive so the head engineer would have control of the brakes. I don’t know what air pressure they run on this train though.

Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is truly a magnificent marvel of a machine to see, to photograph and to film while it is rolling down the shining rails.

Dr. Güntürk Üstün

The air is always handled from the front. So it would be cut through and the 4014 would be in following mode (or what ever the proper name is.) acting as a regular car.

Any information about the manifest stalling? Under powered? If this happened in the past they’d just back east to the level stretch behind them and then make a run for it depending on what other issues there may have been. A lot of options with sidings a short ways ahead or wait for next westbound It is a problem with this area being single track over the Missouri river..

During World War II Union Pacific operated some of the most modern and powerful steam locomotives ever built. Among them were the famous “Big Boys,” the largest steam locomotives in the world. Working with them were the “800-class” high-speed passenger locomotives, as well as hundreds of older class steam engines. Union Pacific’s steam legacy continues today with the preservation and operation of its historic fleet – No. 844 and No. 4014.

What a legendary locomotive! What a legendary design! What a legendary team! What a legendary performance! What a legendary rail passion!

A few questions on the mechanics of the shove up the hill – 1. When the manifest stalls, is it necessary to set a percentage of handbrakes after a certain time, or can the locomotives keep the car reservoirs charged without releasing the train brakes? 2. When 4014 couples on, is the air cut in through the entire manifest-4014 train, or not? 3. (related question) Once moving, does each respective engineer control the air on his portion of the train, or is it all handled from the head end, with radio advice to 4014?

In thinking about #3, the air must be divided, because the passenger train would be running at 110psi, an the freight at something less. 90?

Cheyenne’s Historic Steam Locomotive Big Boy 4014 Heads To College World Series Next Month

Train enthusiasts in eastern Wyoming and Nebraska will have a chance next month to get up close and personal with a living, breathing behemoth of a legend.

“Big Boy” 4014, the only one of the massive 1.2 million-pound steam locomotives still in operation, departs the Cheyenne rail yard June 7 for a jaunt across Wyoming and Nebraska as part of its “Home Run Express” tour.

It’ll chug its way into Omaha, where “it’ll be on display during the College World Series,” said Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mike Jaxion.

Big Boy 4014.

Union Pacific’s Big Boys

Twenty-five of the massive “Big Boy” engines were built in the 1940s for Union Pacific.

At 132 feet long and weighing in at 600 tons, the railroad workhorses operated primarily between Cheyenne and Ogden, Utah. For 20 years, beginning in the early 1940s, these steam engines dominated the railway across southern Wyoming until they were retired in the early 1960s.

Jaxion told Cowboy State Daily that Big Boy 4014 is possibly the most public example of the corporation’s heritage.

“Union Pacific has more than 160 years of history, dating back to the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad back in 1869,” he said. “And it’s something that we like to share with the public just to remind people where we came from, and it also allows us to highlight the progress that (we’ve made with) our current locomotive technology.”

Big Boy 4014

Steam engines were the most powerful and prevalent power generators for factories, ships and trains between the mid-18th through the 19th centuries because of their reliability and longevity. But Jaxion explained that after World War II, steam technology started to fall by the wayside.

“Diesel technology was so much more efficient, so much safer, that once the war effort was over, and the British and the American industrial economy switched over from making tanks and jeeps and those types of things, diesel locomotives became more and more prevalent,” said Jaxion.

Big Boy No. 4014 was one of 25 large steam-powered locomotives built for Union Pacific designed to pull long, fast freight trains over the Wasatch Mountains of Utah and Sherman Hill in Wyoming. Delivered in December 1941, the train logged more than 1 million miles in its two decades in service and was retired in December 1961.

For the next 60 years, the massive locomotive rested at the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California. But in 2013, UP brought the engine back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process .

“Big Boy had built a legend because it was largest steam locomotive that Union Pacific ever operated,” said Jaxion. “People keep asking us if we could ever restore a Big Boy, so we said, ‘Well, let's do it.’”

After a six-year painstaking restoration, Big Boy 4014 returned to service in May 2019, just in time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. It joined its little brother, Engine 844 , in commemorating that historic event.

“We call 844 the ‘living legend,’ because it's the only steam locomotive that has never been retired,” said Jaxion. “When we phased it out, 844 went over to what they called ‘special service,’ we just pull it out every so often. We want to keep this in operation because it really speaks to Union Pacific’s legacy.”

Big Boy 4004, one of 25 of the giant 1.2 million-pound locomotives built in the early 1940s, is on display in Holiday Park in Cheyenne.

Wyoming Is Home To Multiple Big Boys

There are seven Big Boys on public display in various cities around the country, including St. Louis, Dallas, Omaha, Denver, Scranton, Pennsylvania and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

There's even one on display in Cheyenne — Big Boy 4004 — which draws visitors every day to Holiday Park.

But Jaxion pointed out that both of UP's steam engines that are still in operation – 4014 and 844 — call Wyoming home.

“Our steam locomotive operations are concentrated in the Cheyenne shop near the old Depot Museum, where we store and maintain the steam locomotives,” he said. “When those steam locomotives were in use, they were kind of workhorses, but now they're more the company’s showpiece. They're kind of our goodwill ambassadors.”

But Jaxion explained that although the two operational steam engine trains are housed in Cheyenne, that doesn’t mean they are available to the public.

That’s because “844 and 4014 are stored inside our steam locomotive facility, which was never designed to be a public facility,” he said. “It's actually inside an active rail yard. So unfortunately, people can't actually view these locomotives, except when we take them out for people to see.”

Big Boy 4014's Home Run Express Tour route.

Big Boy’s Home Run Express Tour

That opportunity is coming up in just over a week, when Big Boy 4014 will be back riding the rails beginning June 7, on what UP is calling its Home Run Express. The giant steam locomotive will make several stops in southeast Wyoming and across southern Nebraska on its way to the College World Series in Omaha.

“So, if people are coming to those games, they can see it,” said Jaxion. “And there is an excellent chance that TV broadcasts might catch a glimpse of it during the during the series, also.”

After the College World Series wraps up, Big Boy will steam its way back to Cheyenne, arriving home July 3, making nearly a dozen stops along the way.

“Everybody wants to see the Big Boy come to their community,” said Jaxion. “So we share when we can.”

Frazier's Clutch Home Run Leads Royals to Friday Comeback Against Angels

Will miller | 4 hours ago.

May 10, 2024; Anaheim, California, USA; Kansas City Royals designated hitter Adam Frazier (26).

  • Kansas City Royals
  • Los Angeles Angels

Just because Friday's game between the Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals didn't have lots of scoring, that doesn't mean the contest was short on theatrics. Royals designated hitter Adam Frazier proved that with his game-winning home run in the ninth inning, off an All-Star closer, no less. The Royals have now won three games in a row.

Until Frazier's blast, a fifth-inning solo shot to center by Angels right fielder Jo Adell was the only score in the whole game. The night's starting pitchers at Angel Stadium in Anaheim each exceeded five innings of work. Kansas City starter Alec Marsh went 5.1 innings with four hits and seven strikeouts. Los Angeles starter Griffin Canning went 5.2 shutout innings with a trio of hits and strikeouts. Marsh's team came out on top with a 2-1 victory.

Neither hurler factored into the decision, but for Canning, his outing was a step in the right direction. He entered the game with a 6.69 earned run average and a 1-4 record, emblematic of the struggles faced this season by the Angels (14-25).

Kansas City (24-16) also had help from left fielder MJ Melendez, whose three hits amounted to just one fewer than the rest of the lineup got between themselves in the game. He was the first Royals baserunner of the game, connecting on a two-out triple in the second that was negated by a Frazier flyout. In that same inning, Marsh struck out three Halo hitters in a row to strand brand-new Angels acquisition Niko Goodrum at second.

It all seemed for naught until the ninth. The Royals' pitching kept the team within striking distance of the struggling home team, which had already dropped Thursday's series opener by a six-run margin. First-year Los Angeles manager Ron Washington brought in 2023 All-Star Carlos Estevez to protect a 1-0 lead. Adell's sixth home run of the season appeared as though it might be enough. Instead, Frazier, who didn't play the field on Friday, did Adell one better.

The visiting offense had been unable to capitalize, and finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position (the Angels were a far worse 0-for-14). That changed when Melendez singled with one gone in the ninth. Frazier, who spent last season with the AL East-winning Baltimore Orioles, had a hit and a walk already but made his first home run of the season count.

Even in the face of disappointing results over the last two nights, the Angels can still salvage a series split. Kansas City, however, has now won seven of 11 games. The bats weren't at their best, but the pitching was. The bullpen, including the game's winning pitcher John Schreiber, threw up 3.2 scoreless to give its offense a chance to show signs of life. That included three-up, three-down innings from both Will Smith and Tyler Duffey. Schreiber left the tying run 90 feet away when he recorded the final out.

The Royals and Angels will do battle again on both Saturday and Sunday, with Kansas City set to endure another 8:38 p.m. CT start time in the first of those two games. The series finale is slated for 3:07 p.m. CT.

Taylor Swift slams Matty Healy and shouts out Travis Kelce with Eras tour changes

Taylor swift mixed romance and rivalry in her eras tour performance, spotlighting travis kelce and targeting matty healy., taylor swift teases release of new music video.

Taylor Swift's Paris performance during her Eras Tour featured a romantic shout out to Travis Kelce and a playful jab at Matty Healy.

Taylor introduced a segment devoted to her album, The Tortured Poets Department , at the concert.

This set sparked fan theories about hidden messages related to her past encounter with Matty.

She performed The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived from TTPD, rumored to detail her brief time with Matty.

During this performance, Taylor brutally imitated Matty's unique stage march and salute, a move noticed and discussed by fans online.

"The way she was pretending to die after singing the smallest man who ever lived and then sang i can do it with a broken heart oh matty you will pay for your crimes," shared one fan on X.

Another song from the set, But Daddy I Love Him, was believed to be about Matty as well.

During the performance, Taylor subtly shifted the focus of the song's conclusion to her current boyfriend, Travis, seamlessly integrating elements of her song about her current beau, So High School, into the outro.

Speaking of Travis , Taylor made sure to give him plenty of love during the set.

During her live act, Taylor performed a dance move reminiscent of the Kansas City Chiefs , Travis’ NFL team, set to their unofficial anthem, Swag Surfin by Fast Life Yungstaz.

A TikTok clip captured Taylor seated on steps designed to look like stadium seating.

Backup dancers surrounded Taylor, who did the swag surf, just like fans at a football game, moving in sync with the music.

As she mimicked one of Travis' famous touchdown dances, Taylor crooned: “It’s true, swear, scouts honor / You knew what you wanted, and boy you got her.”

This lyric from her song on her TTPD album hints at her relationship with Travis , portraying it as a youthful and thrilling romance.

She even participated in the swag surf with Chiefs fans during a crucial playoff victory against the Miami Dolphins earlier in February.

Thursday night's Paris show marked Taylor's return to the stage after a two month break, during which she spent a lot of time with Travis.

Taylor continues her European leg through the summer before ending the year back in the US and Canada.

Sober tourism: where to go for an active alcohol-free vacation.

Hiking on the famous Tour du Mont Blanc near Chamonix, France is a bucket list adventure.

It’s not uncommon for many folks to start their vacation with a celebratory cocktail or glass of wine: at the airport lounge, on board the flight, or as a welcome nip at the hotel check-in counter. This ritual can also flow throughout the day with meals and as a night cap before bed. Many sober-curious travelers are thinking about holidays in a newfangled way, eschewing alcohol for a “dry tripping” experience, which enables them to revel on a getaway without the inevitable dreaded hangover, fully lucid for the next day’s activities.

Sober tourism can definitely transform how you think about a vacation. While pub crawls and brewery tours can be fun, there’s a whole world out there to explore that doesn’t revolve around drinking. Hotels are taking note of this promising trend as well—many offer a mocktail menu with fun and fizzy alcohol-free drinks, so you don’t have to sit at the table with just a water with lemon.

Well beyond a “Dry January” or a “Sober October”, here are wild vacations that will help you thrive and feel good in your body, from start to finish whether you’ve given up alcohol for good or you just prefer to travel with less of it. From seaside hiking trips to paddling expeditions to exciting road races to romps around European mountain tops, these exciting adventures will leave you recharged with plenty of stories to tell when you return home. Here, sober travel is synonymous to power travel.

Go Hiking in Greece

Santorini, with its traditional houses and blue-domed churches, stretching out of the Caldera in the ... [+] Aegean sea, is worth seeing on foot.

For a week-long outdoor journey that goes at a leisurely pace, Exodus Adventure Travels offers a guided trip called Walking on the Greek Islands , which includes visits to Santorini, Naxos, and Paros islands. You’ll discover the natural beauty of the local villages, leafy valleys, and distinct beaches while learning about Greek history, culture, and archeology along the way.

Raft on an Expedition in the Canadian Wilderness

Virginia Falls at South Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories is a sight to see.

If you’ve gone rafting before and truly loved it, and you wished that it was lengthier and more hands-on to give you that “I’m alive!” feeling, then give a seven-day rafting trip on the Nahanni River in Canada’s Northwest Territories a try.

Located in one of the world’s most beloved national parks, the Nahanni National Park Reserve , guests can expect to witness spectacular sights on this once-in-a-lifetime wonder-filled adventure like thundering waterfalls, colossal multi-hued canyons, and natural hot springs. Love wildlife? If you’re lucky, you’ll spot Yukon moose, mountain goats, beavers, caribou, Dall sheep, black and brown bears, and numerous varieties of songbirds along the way as you travel over 150 miles from Virginia Falls to Nahanni Butte. Hikers will have plenty of opportunities to revel in the natural landscapes once at camp. Bonus: someone else does the cooking!

Run to the Finish Line

Despite all the deep dish pizza, Chicago is a runner's paradise.

When you sign up for a 10K or half marathon, you’ll likely have to physically, mentally, and emotionally prepare in order to have an enjoyable experience. If you’ve always wanted to explore the Windy City, then consider adding the Life Time Chicago Spring Half Marathon or 10K to your upcoming travel plans (now or in the future). You’ll start in Maggie Daley Park and continue south on this looped course that ends with you getting a medal placed around your neck.

Pro tip: book accommodations at Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park , which is within walking distance to the start of the race. Plus, you can book a spa treatment for post-race bliss at Leaf Spa .

Hikers will see flower-dotted valleys, massive snow-capped peaks, and charming villages on this challenging hiking adventure where, on average, nine miles and 3,000 feet of elevation gain and loss are crushed each day. Now, what could be more dialed in than that?
