How to use Adaptive Cruise Control on Toyota Prius 4th generation

Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control supplements conventional cruise control with vehicle-to-vehicle distance control.

how to use prius cruise control

It allows the vehicle to automatically accelerate or decelerate in order to help maintain a set following distance from a vehicle traveling directly ahead.

  • To turn the system on, press the on-off button on the cruise control stalk on the steering wheel. The radar cruise control indicator will illuminate, and a message will appear in the MID.
  • Accelerate to your desired speed of 30 miles per hour or more and push the stalk down to set the speed. When you do, the set indicator will appear in the multi-information display.
  • If you need to increase your set speed, push the stalk up and quickly release it for a small increase in speed. Holding the stalk up will accelerate continuously to a desired speed. Release the stalk and the speed will set.
  • To reduce the set speed, push down and quickly release it for a small decrease in speed. Holding the stalk down will decelerate continuously. Release the stalk at your desired speed and the speed will set.

When a vehicle in front of you is detected to be moving slightly slower, your vehicle will slow down, illuminate the brake lights and help you maintain a set distance. If the system cannot decelerate sufficiently to prevent your vehicle from closing in on the vehicle ahead, a warning tone sounds to notify you.

Adjusting gap: Pressing the vehicle-to-vehicle distance button on the steering wheel repeatedly cycles through the three distances available: long, medium or short.

When traveling above 25 miles per hour and there are no longer any vehicles directly ahead of you driving slower than the set speed, the system will accelerate until the set speed is reached.

How to Cancel: To cancel a set speed, press on the brake pedal or pull the stalk towards you.

How to resume after stopping: While using Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, when the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you stops, the system is designed to also stop your vehicle. After the vehicle ahead of you starts off, pushing the cruise control stalk up or tapping the accelerator will resume follow up cruising.

System disables itself below 25 miles an hour: If the vehicle ahead of you turns out of the lane and your vehicle is traveling at a speed below about 25 miles per hour, cruise control will be canceled. To resume, accelerate to 30 miles per hour or more and push the stalk up.

Using conventional Cruise Control

Your vehicle can also be switched to operate using conventional Constant Speed Cruise Control.

  • With the system off, press and hold the on-off button approximately two seconds to activate the system.
  • The dynamic radar cruise control indicator will appear and then switch to the cruise control indicator.
  • Press the stalk down to set the speed.
  • To switch back to vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, turn the cruise control off by pressing the on-off button, wait a second and press it again to turn the system on.
  • When the vehicle is shut off and started again, the system will default to the Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system.

2024 Toyota Prius Cruise Control Instructions

2024-Toyota-Prius-User-Manual-fEATURED

Table of Contents

There is an improved cruise control system in the 2024 Toyota Prius that makes driving more enjoyable by making it easy and quick to stay at a set speed while on the road. This new cruise control feature is meant to be both convenient and safe. It lets drivers set a speed and let the car change its speed automatically to stay a safe distance behind the car in front of it. In the 2024 Prius, all you have to do to use cruise control is find the buttons for it on the steering wheel. Once the system is turned on, it uses advanced sensors and adaptable technology to keep an eye on traffic and make changes in real-time to make sure driving is safe and smooth. With the 2024 Toyota Prius’s cruise control, drivers can enjoy a stress-free trip on the open road while getting the most out of their gas mileage and feeling less tired.

Cruise control

The vehicle can be driven at a set speed even if the accelerator pedal is not depressed. Use the cruise control only on highways and expressways.

For safe use

  • Driving safely is solely the responsibility of the driver. Therefore, do not overly rely on this system. The driver is solely responsible for paying attention to the vehicle’s surroundings and driving safely.
  • Set the speed appropriately according to the speed limit, traffic flow, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. The driver is responsible for confirming the set speed.

Situations in which cruise control should not be used Do not use the cruise control in the following situations. As the system will not be able to provide appropriate control, using it may lead to an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

  • On roads with sharp bends
  • On winding roads
  • On slippery roads, such as those covered with rain, ice, or snow
  • On steep downhills, or where there are sudden changes between sharp up and down gradients Vehicle speed may exceed the set speed when driving down a steep hill.
  • When it is necessary to disable the system

The set vehicle speed will increase or decrease as follows: Fine adjustment: By 1 mph (1.6 km/h) or 1 km/h (0.6 mph) each time the switch is pressed Large adjustment: Increases continuously while the switch is pressed and held

  • Increasing the set vehicle speed using the accelerator pedal
  • Depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle to the desired vehicle speed.
  • Press the “+” switch.

Cancelling/resuming control

2024 Toyota Prius-Cruise Control-fig 6

  • Press the “RES” switch to resume control.

Automatic cancellation of the cruise control In the following situations, the cruise control will be canceled automatically:

  • When the vehicle speed drops approximately 10 mph (16 km/h) or more below the set vehicle speed
  • When the vehicle speed drops below approximately 20 mph (30 km/h)
  • When the brake control or output restriction control of a driving support system operates (For example: PCS, drive-start control)
  • When the parking brake has been operated
  • Situations in which some or all of the functions of the system cannot operate:

To activate the cruise control, first, make sure you are traveling at the desired speed, then press the “ON” button on the steering wheel.

The “SET” button is used to set the current speed as the desired cruising speed.

Yes, you can adjust the set speed by using the “+” and “-” buttons on the steering wheel.

You can temporarily deactivate the cruise control by pressing the brake pedal or using the “CANCEL” button on the steering wheel.

Yes, you can resume the previously set speed by pressing the “RES” (resume) button on the steering wheel.

Yes, if your Prius is equipped with adaptive cruise control, you can typically adjust the following distance using the controls on the steering wheel.

To turn off the cruise control, press the “OFF” button on the steering wheel or tap the brake pedal.

The speed limiter function might be available as part of the cruise control system.

Pressing the “CANCEL” button will deactivate the cruise control without erasing the set speed, allowing you to easily resume later.

While standard cruise control may not be suitable for heavy traffic, adaptive cruise control in some models can handle slow-moving traffic by adjusting speed accordingly.

A cruise control indicator light on the dashboard usually illuminates when the system is active.

Speed-sensitive cruise control adjusts your speed based on the traffic flow, and it might be available on certain trims or as an option.

It’s generally recommended to avoid using cruise control on slippery roads or in adverse weather conditions for safety reasons.

Always maintain full attention to the road, be ready to take control, and follow safety guidelines.

Some models may allow you to customize certain cruise control settings; refer to the owner’s manual for details on available customization options.
