In 1769, the picturesque church was built on the top of the hill overlooking the town of Santa Maria.

This massive baroque structure was not just a lookout, but a religious centre of the area as well.

It is also reminiscent of the four centuries of Spanish domination in the area.

However, unlike other churches in the region, it is surrounded by defensive walls like a fortress.

The mansion itself is another example of a hybrid of Spanish and Philippine’s architecture.

14. St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral

ilocos sur famous tourist spot

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the major religious landmarks of the Philippines.

The original structure was made in 1574, but it was just a chapel then.

In 1641 the chapel was replaced by the church, but it was finally completed in 1800.

The cathedral was built in Baroque earthquake style, with strengthened thick walls and massive structure against earthquakes.

When you enter the cathedral, you can admire its interior, the silver-panelled main altar, 12 smaller altars and brass communion rails made in China.

You can also see Chinese characters where the rails connect to the building.

The cathedral’s octagonal design is supposedly rooted in feng shui principles.

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is close to Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos.

15. Crisologo Museum

ilocos sur famous tourist spot

16. Padre Burgos House – National Museum

ilocos sur famous tourist spot

As a young priest, Father or Padre Burgos fought for the equal rights for Philippine’s clergy.

However, he was executed by the Spanish in 1872 with two other martyr priests.

12. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

A pot crafted in the RG Jar Factory in Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Recognized for its historical and cultural charms, Vigan City has drawn flocks of travelers to Ilocos Sur over the years. Contributing to its overall appeal is the Pagburnayan Jar Factory.

It is one of the few remaining factories that continue the traditional way of making burnay, or unglazed earthen jars, dating back to colonial times. The art of making jars originally came from Chinese traders who eventually settled in Vigan.

To spread the appreciation of making these clay jars, the factory lets travelers try their hand in molding their own creations during Vigan tours . The whole process involves shaping the clay on a spinning stone wheel using your own hands and traditional tools.

Let your creative mind run wild and decorate your jars to your heart's content. After, you will cook the jars inside in-ground kilns to harden them so they can stay in shape.

Today, jar-making has become one of the staple activities in Ilocos Sur tour packages. Along with teaching guests how to shape clay, the staff also share interesting stories on the origins of the craft and how they preserve the practice.

While they undoubtedly have great cultural significance, these jars are more than just unique souvenirs. In fact, they are still often used to ferment homemade specialty vinegar and artisanal wines made by locals.

The Crisologo Museum sits along A. Reyes Street, Vigan

Continue to embrace the heritage of Ilocos Sur by checking out the classic Crisologo Museum. It is best known for being the ancestral home of the late statesman Floro S. Crisologo, whom it was named after.

However, he was unfortunately assassinated in the 1970s while inside the St. Paul's Cathedral. Despite the tragic event, his wife, Carmeling, and the rest of his family decided not to seek vengeance on his behalf.

Instead, they chose to honor his life and his achievements inside his home. Soon, the family opened the mansion up to the public, and it is now one of the most iconic museums in the Philippines.

Upon entering the first floor, you can find Floro's study and library, which has been filled with news clippings about him and his family. Visitors can even enter the master's bedroom that contains some of his most prized possessions.

The museum's main exhibit is the bloodied clothes the late congressman was wearing when he was shot. Aside from the clothes, an old car is also preserved in the home. It was the same vehicle his wife was riding when someone tried to take her life. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit Carmeling, and she lived until the age of 94 before dying in 2018.

The Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Ilocos Norte

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is known for being one of the highest elevated lighthouses in the Philippines that dates back to the Spanish colonial era. The 66-foot-tall octagonal stone tower stands on the country's northwesternmost point, the Vigia de Nagpartian Hill, and overlooks Cape Bojeador in the West Philippine Sea. First lit in 1892, the structure has guided numerous seafarers to safe shores over the years.

While it was constructed years ago, it is still used today and is regularly maintained by staff. Most of its original designs were preserved and remain functional today, but a few modern touches have been fixed to keep it running smoothly.

It initially worked with a Fresnel lens lamp that had to be replaced in the 1990s when an earthquake struck the region. Pressurized kerosene lit the lamp for around a century before it was replaced with solar panels.

The tower, more commonly known as the Burgos Lighthouse, was designed by Magin Pers y Pers back in 1887. However, it was eventually finished by the Lighthouse Service under Guillermo Brockman.

Along with this structure, the two Spanish engineers also built other lighthouses across the Philippines as part of the Spanish government's plan to illuminate the islands. Today, this building is recognized both as a National Cultural Treasure and a National Historical Landmark.

Facade of the Vigan Cathedral in Ilocos Sur

Vigan Cathedral, also called the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, is one of the most iconic Ilocos churches. Standing in front of the city's Plaza Salcedo, this holy building is hard to miss and has been regarded as one of the must-see tourist spots in Vigan . Due to its proximity to the plaza, many travelers also have their photos taken between the two historical sites.

Juan de Salcedo, a Spanish conquistador, ordered the construction of a temporary church in Vigan back in 1574. At the time, the structure was built with only wood and stalk. The simple building was eventually replaced with a studier one in 1641, the first official Vigan Cathedral.

However, the church was damaged by two earthquakes over the years and was ultimately burned in 1739. Following the series of incidents, the fourth and current version of the cathedral was finished in the 1800s under the order of Augustinian priests.

The whole cathedral boasts a Baroque style, complete with large buttresses on either side. Inside are a silver-paneled altar, 12 minor altars, and brass altar railings. On the other hand, a 25-meter-high bell tower that symbolizes St. Peter sits to the south of the church.

The Patapat Viaduct in Ilocos Norte lines a coastal mountain

The Patapat Viaduct goes on for 12 kilometers, making it one of the longest bridges in the Philippines. It is located at the foot of the cliff of the Northern Cordillera Mountain Range in the municipality of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

Today, locals pass through it to reach the neighboring province of Cagayan Valley or vice versa. Standing at about 31 meters above sea level, this bridge also offers great scenic views of Pasaleng Bay and the mountains that it passes by.

The current pathway was opened to the public in October 1986. Before the Patapat Viaduct, an etched footbridge in the upper part of the cliff was the only connection between the two provinces. Over the years, it has been dubbed the French Riviera of the Northern Philippines due to the breathtaking sights it provides to people going on Ilocos Norte tours. It's one of the top attractions included in Pagudpud tours .

Tourists often stop by the side of the bridge to take in the view and take photos with the stunning bay and its azure waters as their backdrops. The Pasaleng Bay also features one-half of a shipwreck that dates back to when the Japanese occupied the Philippines. Meanwhile, the other half is believed to lay in the depths of Agua Grande, further along the bridge.

The Bantay Church Bell Tower sits atop a hill in Ilocos Sur

Another important cultural site in Ilocos Sur and a top attraction in Vigan tours  is the Bantay Bell Tower. It dates back to 1591, making it one of the oldest bell towers in the region. Sitting atop a hill that overlooked the Bantay district in northeast Vigan, locals initially used it as a watchtower when fighting broke out in the Spanish era and World War II.

After the wars, it was restored and repurposed as a belfry for the nearby Saint Augustine Parish Church, more commonly known as Bantay Church. Built a year prior to the tower's construction, these two structures are a testament to the rich heritage that has taken place in Ilocos.

Travelers can simply admire the red brick tower from the foot of the hill. Otherwise, you can climb a set of stairs to the tower's entrance and even go up the winding steps inside it. After reaching the top of the belfry, you will find the large metal bell. Aside from the historic bell, visitors are also rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

After getting a closer look at the tower, visitors also often check out the Bantay Church to get a better sense of the area's culture. Take your time as you stroll through the grounds that are designed with beautiful greeneries and religious statues.

6. Sand Dunes

Travelers ride across the La Paz Sand Dunes, Ilocos Norte

While Ilocos is filled with spots that shed light on its people's culture, the region also has its share of stunning natural wonders. Specifically, the Paoay and La Paz Sand Dunes in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. These sandy deserts offer thrilling adventures for tourists and are a refreshing change from the usual seaside activities in the province. A 4x4 ride to these sand dunes can be booked in Laoag tours .

The La Paz Sand Dunes are situated near the coast of the West Philippine Sea and spans an area that measures 85 square kilometers. It is also known as Bantay Bimmaboy among the locals and contains sand dunes that can be as high as 30 meters. Due to its sheer size, this sandy area reaches the nearby municipalities of Currimao and Pasuquin that sit to the north and south of Laoag, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Paoay Sand Dunes face Suba Beach and covers an area of 88 square kilometers. Similar to the ones in La Paz, travelers can explore the area while riding a 4X4 vehicle operated by a staff member. These thrilling rides take you up and down the dunes at fast paces and can give guests a rush of adrenaline. Tourists can also stop in the middle of the desert to try sandboarding, where you will ride a wooden or plastic board down sandy slopes.

The anvil-shaped rock at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formations

The Kapurpurawan Rock Formations are regarded as one of the most popular rock formations in the Philippines. Situated in Bangui Bay, Ilocos Norte, this geographical attraction gets its name from the Ilocano word "puraw," which means "white" in English. These beautiful white sandstone structures were shaped by years of exposure to the wind and the sea and is a must-visit attraction in Pagudpud tours .

To get a closer look at these towering rock formations, you will first need to take a short hike through beautiful landscapes dotted with lush trees and natural pools. Guests can either walk all the way or rent a horse that you can ride to the structures.

At the end of the trail, you will be greeted by the towering sandstone formations. From there, you can also get a panoramic view of Bangui Bay and the giant windmills that top the nearby hills. Feel free to walk around the area to capture a picture-perfect snap of the anvil-shaped rock,  which is often considered the site's main draw.

Certain parts of the formations can be climbed to give you an even more in-depth look at the smooth surface shaped by the waves and gusts of wind coming in from the bay.

Paoay Church during sunset in Ilocos Norte

When visiting Laoag in Ilocos Norte, make sure not to miss the iconic Paoay Church. Construction of this Roman Catholic church finished back in 1710 after around two decades of work. It is officially named the Saint Augustine Church.

Years after its completion, UNESCO recognized it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" group. The national government also honored the church for its historical significance and named it one of the country's National Cultural Treasures in 1973.

  • Book a  Laoag City & Paoay Ilocos Norte top attractions shore excursion

Built in the iconic earthquake baroque style, the church features a wide base and massive buttresses on its sides and back. The chapel's exterior walls are made of large coral stones and bricks, which were common materials for older churches in the Philippines.  Its facade also resembles elements from Javanese architecture, specifically, designs that are similar to the Borobudur temple in Java, Indonesia.

Aside from the church itself, its three-story bell tower is a striking building as well. Detached from the main cathedral, it previously served as an observation post for natives during the war with Spaniards in the 1800s and the fight against Japanese forces in World War II.

After opening its doors in the early years of the 18th century, the church continues to hold masses. Priests currently celebrate mass in English, Filipino, or Ilocano, depending on the schedule.

Bangui Windmills lined up on a beach in Ilocos Norte

Situated along Bangui Bay in Ilocos Norte are 26 giant wind turbines that face the West Philippine Sea. These towering white structures were built in three phases. The first phase was completed in May 2005 with 15 initial windmills. Each turbine is 70 meters tall and has three blades that measure up to 41 meters in length.

The Bangui Windmills are the first wind farm in the Philippines and generates enough energy to power more than 40% of Ilocos Norte's electricity. The turbines' energy reaches the province's residents and businesses through the Luzon Grid. Thanks to its strategic location away from forests that can block the wind, the farm has become one of the country's top sustainable sources of energy.

Along with being a more environment-friendly alternative to more traditional sources of energy such as fossil fuels, the wind farm has become a popular tourist spot as well. Since it was opened to the public, tourists have made their way to the site to see the massive turbines up close and personal. Though more windmills are situated in different areas in the farm, the most famous ones are those that line a 9-kilometer stretch of the Bangui Bay shoreline.

Kalesa strolling on Calle Crisologo, Ilocos Sur

Ilocos Sur tours would not be complete without strolling along the cobblestoned streets of Calle Crisologo in Vigan. Commonly known as one of the most beautiful streets in the Philippines, this 500-meter-long avenue is lined with centuries-old Spanish-style homes.

It is also a pedestrian-only area, further bringing to life the laid-back atmosphere present in the province's early days. In place of cars, tourists can explore the street on their own two feet or while riding horse-drawn carriages locally known as kalesas during Calle Crisologo tours .

A number of the ancestral homes have been turned into restaurants that cook the famous Ilocos bagnet (deep-fried pork belly) and empanadas. On the other hand, a few of them have become inns or souvenir shops that offer crafts created by local artisans. These artworks are often displayed outside the shops as well, making it easy for travelers to window shop while enjoying the scene.

The street was previously known as Calle de Escolta de Vigan. It was later changed in 1927 to honor the late Governor Marcelino "Mena" Crisologo, a renowned local poet and writer who died in the same year. Today, it is part of the city's Heritage Village, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Aside from Calle Crisologo, the village consists of around 200 restored homes dating back to the 16th century.

For those who like off-the-beaten-path adventure, one of the Ilocos Sur tourist spots that you should see is Aw-Asen Falls. Standing about 121 meters high, Aw-Asen Falls is considered the highest waterfall in the Ilocos Region. It’s tucked away in the mountains of Sigay, away from the main tourist crowd, making it a great spot for nature tripping.

To get here, you will need to go on a short but tiring trek for almost an hour. The trail mostly consists of mountain path and thick vegetation. Once at the waterfall area, don’t miss the chance to take photos of the majestic waterfall in its glory and take a dip in its cool, deep basin. It is said that the waterfall is fed by a spring uphill, so the water is safe to drink.

The best time to visit Aw-Asen Falls is from November to May.

Pinsal Falls in Ilocos Sur

Next up is one of the best-kept attractions in Ilocos Sur: Pinsal Falls.

Located in the town of Sta. Maria, Pinsal Falls is an 80-foot waterfall with a wide emerald-green basin for swimming. Locals also refer to it as “Twin Falls,” since the flowing cascade separates into two.

To get to the actual waterfall, you can go on a fun balsa ride or walk your way through a series of stairs. If you’re feeling adventurous, trek to the top of the waterfall, which offers a better view and a series of mini-pools where you can take a dip, jacuzzi-style.

Note : I personally do not recommend any destination that engages in picture taking with captive tigers. I believe there are alternative animal sanctuaries that promote conservation. I’ve included Baluarte Zoo since it is one of the popular tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Vigan empanadas

By far the most popular snack food or side dish in Vigan is empanadas. You will find empanada stands almost anywhere within the crowded plazas of Vigan, Empanada is something Vigan takes pride in.

Made with a combination of ingredients including Longganisang Iloko, beans, shredded cabbages, grated unripe papayas, onion, garlic and egg makes up the core of orange-colored Empanada.

It’s good to visit the many stands where sellers make it right before your very eyes which is also another interesting sight.

Pinakbet or Pakbet called locally is a delicious vegetable dish made with eggplants, okra, string beans, chili peppers, and bitter gourd. If you’re feeling a bit conscious about your health, this is the perfect meal to try out in Vigan and a very popular local favorite dish to enjoy.

This popular Vigan style sausage is all the rage around the Philippines with the popular pork belly styled meat dish. Made traditionally and dried under the sun, marinated then deep-fried to make it super crispy with tender meat on the inside.  Bagnet is recognized as the region’s delicacy symbol and is delicious and crunchy on the outside in fried perfection and so cholesterol-rich but oh so good to eat as a local delicacy.

Longganisang Iloko

A favorite local sausage, the Longganisang Iloko is known as Vigan Longganisa and a must try local sausage made and sold in the various markets around town. Very aromatic, plump, full of garlic, tatty and seen as a bit yellowish compared to usual sausages but one will convince you of the amazing flavors and aromas that is so well loved for this iconic sausage.

Filipinos cook them in a pan with a bit of water. After the water evaporates, the longganisa is fried using its own fat and is further fried until it turns slightly brown. It brings out its best flavor when dipped in vinegar and eaten with a plate of rice and eggs.

Royal Bibingka

For any sweet tooth, this is a must-try local dessert. The royal bibingka one of Vigan’s specialties of a spongy rice cake dessert. The crusty top and the sticky but soft cupcaked-sized body makes up the crowd favorite bibingka. Topped with cheese and butter, you can never go wrong with a Royal Bibingka.

I never knew this place existed! I would love to take a visit to the watchtower and the markets. It sounds like there is lots of great stuff to do in Vigan!

Vigan City is one of those rare colonial cities in the Philippines that remained relatively intact and is definitely worth a visit

AllGudThings

Whenever I think of Philippines, I think about beaches and never the colonial city. But the Vigan city in Ilcos Sur looks quite impressive and interesting. Riding by Kalesa horse buggies to experience the colonial lifestyle will be on top of my list. Plaza Salcedo and Abel illoco is another attraction I would love to hang and shop around. Great pictures and thanks for sharing.

Most people think of the Philippines as beaches and islands, but there are some cultural gems worth visiting like Vigan city in Ilocos Sud

Anneklien Meanne

I was born and bred here, its so nice reading articles about my home town Vigan City…. you missed going to PAGBURNAYAN a local pottery neighbourhood. Did you try to visit places making the VIGAN longanisa (local sausage)

Oh yes I visiting some of those places that do make and sell Longonissa, the Vigan Sausage specialty. Thanks for suggesting this.

Nisha

I am nostalgic abut our tour of Ilocos. I can never forget how we were overtaken by the cyclone and reached Manila after a delay of many hours. Your photos are just too good Nathan. Especially the street photos :).

It looks like its back to normal and Vigan city is shining with beautiful architecture, food and places to explore

Divyakshi

I had never heard of Vigan city. A little bit of Spain in Philippines! 🙂 Loved the quirky, rustic charm on the streets with colonial architecture and an authentic character of it’s own! Calle Crisologo looks like a superb place for street shots and people watching. Loved the architecture of St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral and the vintage charm of Father Burgos Museum and Home! I’d love to visit the traditional raft centres of Abel Iloco! Thanks for such an insightful post!

It’s well preserved and well worth the Unesco designation, a must visit to Vigan City

SkyeClass

Vigan City looks like a great place to explore. I still haven’t made it to the Philippines, but I hope to fix that next year. I would certainly head for that food market, and climb up Bantay Belfry to get a view of the town. I had no idea this would be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I do try to get to as many of those as I can.

Vigan city is very compact and easy to explore with all the interesting monuments, public squares and architecture – very unique for the Philippines

Pedro

I still need to see more of the Philippines and Vigan will definitely make it to my itinerary next year.

It is beautiful in Ilocos Sud and Vigan City

Hannah Lukaszewicz

Yet another place in the Philippines we need to visit. We spent in the Philippines back in 2014 but I think you could spend YEARS there exploring. So many amazing places.

If you like Unesco sites then you would definitely enjoy exploring Vigan City Hannah

eclecticgal

Vigan City looks so different to my perception of The Philippines. I guess I just imagined great beaches and didn’t realise there were such fabulous historic districts. Really eye opening.

This is unique for the Philippines, it really is a special city.

Melanie Klien

I want to see the Philippines so badly and I think this place looks much more attractive than Manila (although I am not very aware of things to do in Manila). I loved to read you enjoyed the empanadas and now I am hungry 🙂 Bantay Belfry looks really cool. I think I wouldn’t enjoy the market with all the dead animals and I am a bit worried that the horses have to work a lot with carrying people around. The place looks really cool and I hope I can visit one day.

Vigan city is very unique to the Philippines and not like the busy metropolis of Manila

alison abbott (@GreenWithRenvy)

What a beautiful Unesco site. I spend many years in and out of Manila in the 80’s, but never had the opportunity to visit other pieces of the country. clearly I missed a lot. Vigan City reminds me a bit of Cuba with all the colonial influences. Thanks for the visit, your photos really tell a story.

Vigan city is very different than the rest of the country and really maintains its heritage, hence the Unesco status, thanks for visiting.

McCool Travel

This is quite a comprehensive look at Vigan and Ilocos Sur. Those food stalls are calling my name. Mmmmmmm, empanadas.

Vigan City is very historic, cool and fun at the same time.

Rhonda Albom

I love the architecture and style of this city. While I enjoy seeing all the church interiors, there is so much more to this city. I would definitely visit the Sitio food park.

Vigan City is definitely a beautiful Unesco city in Ilocos Sur, I think you would definitely enjoy touring the entire region Rhonda

Must-see Tourist Spots in the province of Ilocos Sur!

Ilocos Sur is the 13 th province I have visited in the quest of visiting all of the Provinces in the Philippines ! (Talk about an 81-province bucket list!) Ilocos Sur has so many similarities to its mother province, Ilocos Norte . Also known for their frugal lifestyle, Ilocanos welcome every visitor with a warm heart.

Known for its Spanish colonial houses and cobblestone streets, the province of Ilocos Sur has so much to deliver – we just have to discover them one by one!

Welcome to Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

Welcome to Vigan City! (Photo by www.theartetect.tumblr.com )

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

All about Ilocos Sur

Ilocos Sur has a total of 32 municipalities and 2 component cities. Of these, I have so far visited 1 Municipality and 1 component City. When I first set foot to visit the province, I with my friends explored the Heritage City of Vigan .

"Let's go back to the past." March 27, 2016 | Calle Crisologo, Vigan, Ilocos Sur Soon on turistaboy.com! #WhenInVigan #Vigan #TuristaBoy #DIYTravelPhilippines A photo posted by Aldrick 'chiki' Zabala Agpaoa (@chikinensis) on Mar 28, 2016 at 4:51pm PDT

Vigan , being one of the only two UNESCO World Heritage Cities, is now only one of the few Hispanic towns in the country, preserving its colonial structures and cobblestone streets. The City, too, received an international recognition as one of the new 7 Wonder Cities of the World (alongside La Paz, Beirut, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Durban, and Havana) in May 2015 by the New7Wonders Organization through public voting.

Ilocos Sur then was once part of Ilocos Norte until it was separated by a Royal Decree as another province on February 2, 1818, hence the names differentiating it from one another.

When arriving in Vigan, you get to see a majority of houses in a mestiza architecture-style – a signature of Spanish Colonial Houses during the early times, preserved through the years.

So without keeping you guys reading any further, here are some of the tourist spots we visited in Ilocos Sur.

Calle Crisologo

Named after one of Ilocos Sur’s illustrious sons, Marcelino “Mena” Pecson-Crisologo , Calle Crisologo earned the reputation of being the cradle of bygone Hispanic houses that has been preserved over time. With its cobblestone strip, the Calle was also once home to the Alta de Sociedad of Vigan.

At present, the Calle is now home to some antique and preserved houses with lots and lots of shops – ranging from restaurants, hotels, souvenir stalls and the like. To get to Calle, ride a tricycle and pay a minimum fare of PhP 10.00 and you will be there in 5 to 10 minutes.

This is also where you will find the most delicious longganisa and empanada anywhere in Ilocos Sur! It’s a must-try!

Plaza Burgos

Plaza P. J. Burgos - Ilocos Sur

Plaza P. J. Burgos

Plaza Burgos is also named after of the tripartite GomBurZa fathers, Jose Burgos , who is also a native of the City of Vigan. The Plaza has a mid-tall post in the middle containing manuscripts and some information about Father Burgos. Plaza is also adjacent to the Saint Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral

Ilocos Sur's St. Paul's Metropolitan Cathedral (Vigan Cathedral)

St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral (Vigan Cathedral)

As the main seat of faith in the archdiocese of Nueva Segovia in Vigan, St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral one of the most celebrated churches in the province. If you will notice, its bell tower features a weather rooster, symbolizing Saint Peter – the first pope of the Catholic Church. The Cathedral has a main altar, 12 minor altars, 3 naves, and brass communion handrails. It also houses some of the archdiocese’s former bishops’ graves.

Plaza Salcedo (Dancing Fountain Park, Elpidio Quirino Monument)

Named after the one who named the Ilocos provinces, Don Juan de Salcedo , Plaza Salcedo ’s main highlight is the newly-installed dancing fountain which is lit up every night (1900 – 2000 H and 2030 – 2130 H) giving an additional entertain to locals and tourists alike. It is also where Elpidio Quirino ’s monument – another Ilocos Sur native and the 6 th President of the Philippines – is situated. You can also find the big letters of I-L-O-C-O-S S-U-R near the Capitol, perfect for photo-ops!

The capitol is the province’s seat of government. It is also where you will find the marker making the City of Vigan a World Heritage City and one of the newest 7 Wonder Cities of the world. The capitol is just across Plaza Salcedo ! It is also close to baratilyo shops where you get to taste the most delicious sinanglaw (beef innards stew) in town.

Crisologo Museum

Crisologo Museum - Ilocos Sur

This is the house-turned-museum of the Crisologo Clan, starting from their earliest generations. All memorabilia, be it personal or political, can be found in the museum. It even has the car where the former Ilocos Sur governor was nearly ambushed in and was kept intact for the public’s viewing. It is located at A. Reyes Street, Vigan City . It is a 5 to 10-minute ride from Calle Crisologo.

Pagburnayan

Pottery making!

Clay pot making in Ilocos Sur

After having that 15 to 20-minute walk from the Crisologo Museum , Ilocos Sur’s famous Pagburnayan or ’pot factory’ is now becoming one of the province’s popular tourist spots. As the pots displayed are made locally and on-the-spot (and a lot cheaper than that in Sagada), it has also become one of the province’s main industries. A demonstration on how these pots are made is readily available. No fee is imposed but donations are highly welcome (encouraged.) It is located in Liberation Boulevard.

Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad (Bantay Church)

Ilocos Sur - Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad (Bantay Church)

Bantay Church is a 15 to 20-minute tricycle ride from Pagburnayan . Also known as Saint Augustine Parish Church, it is also referred to as the Shrine of our Lady of Charity. It is believed to be one of the oldest Churches in the Ilocos Region, established in 1590.

Bantay Belltower

Ilocos Sur - Bantay Bell Tower

The famous Bantay Bell Tower

Housed within the Saint Augustine Parish Church’s vicinity, this famous belfry was once a watchtower of the town against pirates during the Spanish Colonial Period, hence getting the name “ Bantay ,” meaning “to guard,” which then became the Municipality’s name over time. It was also used as a watchtower during World Wars I and II. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of Abra from afar.

Years later, it became a cathedral and was the center of Catholicism in the region. The church you’ll see now was completed in 1800. Trained eyes will notice the many design influences put into the making of the church, from Baroque to Chinese to Ilocano.
