No trip to Windsor could be complete without a visit to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has been the home of 40 monarchs and is one of the official residences of His Majesty The King.

Windsor Castle is open to visitors throughout the year, five days a week, from Thursday to Monday. We recommend allowing 2.5 to 3 hours to see everything.

Tickets for Royal Borough Advantage Card holders are available on the day (subject to availability) or can be prebooked by telephone only (transaction fee payable). Visit Windsor Castle's Practical Information page to find out more.

What to see and do at Windsor Castle (all included in your ticket price)

Visit the magnificent State Apartments to see ceremonial rooms that are used today by the Royal Family for official visits by Heads of State from other countries, investitures, and awards ceremonies, where people from all walks of life are recognised for their achievements. Explore historic rooms, built for Charles II and his Queen, Catherine of Braganza, and view some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Rubens, fine French furniture, delicate tapestries and impressive armours.

During the winter months, enter the Semi-State Rooms , the richly decorated private apartments. Severely damaged by the fire of 1992, they were completely restored to their 19th-century appearance using the original designs supplied to George IV.  Blending classical, gothic and rococo styles, they also contain some of the best 18th-century English and French works of art.

Celebrate 100 years of Queen Mary's Dolls' House, the largest and most famous dolls' house in the world! Completed in 1924, it's a perfect replica of an Edwardian residence, complete with electricity, working lifts and running water. Its scaled-down rooms range from a fully stocked wine cellar and ‘below-stairs’ spaces to grand entertaining salons, and feature contributions from over 1,500 of the finest artists, craftspeople, and manufacturers of the day. The house went on display at Windsor Castle in 1925 and has been delighting visitors ever since.  Read our blog here .

Take in the splendour of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle , the burial place of 11 monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II, Henry VIII and Charles I and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England.

St George’s Chapel is included as part of a ticketed visit to Windsor Castle. Please note, the chapel is closed to general visitors on Sundays but worshippers are welcome to attend services.

Watch Changing the Guard!  Weather permitting, the ceremony begins at 11am and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Please check the Royal Collection Trust website for latest information. There is a link to the British Army website from here too with confirmation of the full schedule.

Have a break in the Undercroft Café. Located in one of the oldest surviving spaces of the Castle, Edward III’s medieval Undercroft, which for centuries served as the Castle’s main wine cellar, is now a café open to visitors. Visit the Royal Collection Trust website to see the menu.

Family activities at Windsor Castle

Collect your handset and follow Scorch the dragon on a special tour of Windsor Castle, full of amazing stories. Try spotting mystery objects and other games as you go round.

Discover the Castle and its 1,000-year history with one of the free trails for children aged 5-11. Look out for battlements, towers, arrow loops and murder holes!

During local school holidays, join free activities for children and families including crafts, storytelling and ‘make and takes’.

If you’re looking for a quieter space, toddlers can take time in the Chill Out Zone, with toys, books and lots of bean bags. The Learning Centre is breastfeeding friendly, and has a designated family bathroom with changing table and a handy ‘caught short’ box.

Top Tips for visiting Windsor Castle

  • Book your tickets in advance, to avoid any disappointment.
  • Get your ticket converted into a one-year pass so you can visit again within 12 months. Speak to a member of staff on the day. Please note that only tickets booked on the Royal Collection Trust website can be converted into a one-year pass.
  • Check which flag is flying from Windsor Castle’s round tower – if it’s the Royal Standard then The King is in residence when you’re visiting.
  • Make sure to collect a multimedia guide to get the most out of your visit to Windsor Castle – it's available in many different languages.
  • Look out for special tours throughout the year including the Great Kitchen and Conquer the Tower tours (these must be booked in advance ).

The Complete Guide to Visiting Windsor | Things to Do, Where to Stay & Eat, & Top Tips

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: April 28, 2024

The final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II is one of the top places to visit in the UK. Windsor Castle is the major attraction in this town on the River Thames, but it has much more to offer. Other reasons to visit include pretty parkland and the cobbled streets lined with lovely pubs and independent shops.

Visit Windsor, and you could also take the Long Walk, hop on a boat trip, see the Crooked House, witness the Changing of the Guard, dine out at a historic pub or smart restaurant, and much more.

This ultimate guide to visiting Windsor shares a wealth of information on subjects such as how long you’ll need and when to visit the castle, walking distances, places to stay, where to eat, and taking tours – both within the town and from London.

Read on to learn all you should know about Windsor – before you go!

All You Need to Know About Visiting Windsor Castle

windsor castle tour opening times

If you want to know your options regarding getting to Windsor, then check out our Windsor Castle visitor guide to find out how to reach it by train, car, coach, or organised tour.

There are two train stations in Windsor – Windsor & Eton Riverside, by River Thames, or Windsor & Eton Central, in the centre of town. Both are a short 10 minutes’ walk from the castle.

If visiting from central London take the direct train from London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside in just over 1 hour.

Good to know – OYSTER CARDS are NOT accepted on this route – you will need to purchase a train ticket!)

The next thing you need to know about visiting Windsor Castle is how long to spend there. Though the Royal Collection Trust advises allowing at least 90 minutes to an hour, we reckon you should spend at least two to three hours there.

On a sunny day, you might want to allow extra time to linger over a picnic in the grounds, too.

windsor castle tour opening times

So do you need to pre book your tickets to Windsor Castle?

You can choose between booking in advance and simply turning up on the day. When you do the latter, you’ll be allocated the next available time slot for admission, which is of course subject to availability. If you buy tickets from Get Your Guide , you can claim a full refund when cancelling 24 hours or more in advance, should your plans change.

If you purchase a London Pass note that entrance is only after 1:00 pm and is subject to availability on the day.

Something you should know before heading to Windsor Castle is about when the castle is closed. It opens between Thursday and Monday, so is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The castle is open during all seasons, throughout the year, though the popular St. George’s Chapel is closed to visitors on Sundays.

However, as it’s a working royal palace, Windsor Castle can often close at short notice. So do check before you go to avoid disappointment! Opening hours are generally from 10 am to 4.15 or 5.15 pm. Find out more about Windsor Castle opening times in this guide .

Windsor Castle’s top attractions include the State Apartments, the Semi-State Rooms, Queen Mary’s Doll’s House, the Moat Room, and of course St. George’s Chapel.

The Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle is when the Household Troops hand over the watch to the next soldiers. It occurs at about 11 am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Check the Household Division schedule here before travelling if you want to witness this colourful ceremony.

Top 10 Other Things to Do in Windsor

If you want to build your own one-day Windsor itinerary, then why not choose from the following sights to see and things to do? It’s easy to do these as well as – or instead of – visiting the castle, as everything is fairly close together.

You can see the Long Walk from the State Entrance of Windsor Castle. It stretches for around two-and-a-half miles, and comprises an impressive, tree-lined route. King Charles II created the walk between 1682 and 1685, and following the route will also take you through Deer Park. The latter offers around 500 red deer and ancient oak trees.

windsor castle tour opening times

Book a ticket for the hop-on, hop-off bus in Windsor, and you could see the sights from a double-decker bus. As well as the castle, you can see the likes of Eton College – the UK’s most prestigious private school – and Windsor Great Park.

Jump on and off as you like to explore at each of the 10 stops. Or complete the entire loop in as a little as 45 minutes.

Visiting Windsor and using the hop on and hop off bus to get around as shown in the image.

A lovely way to see more of the Windsor area – and to experience the River Thames – is to take a boat trip. We can personally recommend doing this! One reputable operator is French Brothers Ltd, who are based at the Clewer Boathouse.

windsor castle tour opening times

You can take a horse-drawn carriage ride along the Long Walk for a very special way to see Windsor. These are operated by Windsor Carriages, and you can make you feel like royalty!

This 1687 building in central Windsor was rebuilt in the 1700s, yet remains very off-kilter. The tall, narrow, Grade II listed structure has three storeys, and bay windows at the front and rear. Apparently the wood used in its construction warped as it dried out, causing the house to lean.

In its time, it’s said that the Crooked House on the High Street in central Windsor has been an antique shop, a butcher’s, and a brewery. Today it’s England’s oldest tea house, and a great place to eat in Windsor.

A fun and delicious diversion in Windsor is Dr. Choc’s, a chocolate factory and cafe. You can take an express workshop here to make a trio of chocolate bars to take home.

Click here to book Dr. Choc’s Express Chocolate Making Workshop

If you want to enjoy a different sort of shopping experience in Windsor, visit Windsor Farm Shop. It lies on the fringe of the Home Park, within the Windsor Estate. It has a cafe, and sells all sorts of local goods, including meat, fruit and vegetables, freshly baked goods, and preserves.

You could pick up a picnic here to enjoy in the castle grounds, or at Windsor Great Park.

Delve into local history at Windsor & Royal Borough Museum. The small depository is housed at Windsor Guildhall, which is packed with original, character features. You can learn about local history at this family-friendly museum via collections, exhibits, and interactive displays.

windsor castle tour opening times

While in Windsor, you really can overdose on royalty if you want to! Head to the 17th century, Grade I listed Frogmore House, which isn’t open to visitors, but you can of course see it from the outside. This has housed Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie, plus many other royals historically.

Other buildings to see include Prince Andrew’s 30-room home the Royal Lodge. There’s also Fort Belvedere, which still belongs to the Crown, but is now rented out privately.

There are lots of lovely, independent stores in Windsor where you can pick up unique gifts. Whether for yourself or others, find a one-off item to wear or take home while shopping in Windsor.

Visiting Windsor Castle: What We’ll Cover

If you’re planning a trip to London, you won’t want to miss Windsor Castle. You don’t have to love royalty to appreciate it. Any lover of art, history, or architecture will enjoy exploring this magnificent castle.

The state apartments have been open since 1848 when Queen Victoria opened them to the public. Various rooms are filled with priceless works of art by the old masters. St George’s chapel is one of the finest examples of the English Gothic Perpendicular style. The castle itself is also a testament to 11th-century Norman military strategy.

There’s a fascinating display of the different gifts to Her Majesty The Queen. This collection of foreign artifacts comes from the far reaches of the globe. Also, there are few places in the world where you can be surrounded by that many Holbeins, Van Dycks, and Reubens in just one room. Convinced? Windsor Castle Opening Hours and Tickets

View of the tree-lined Long Walk leading up to Windsor Castle in England

Opening Hours of Windsor Castle:

The castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as on December 25 and 26. Opening times vary seasonally and many state occasions take place at Windsor Castle, so it could be closed to the public on short notice. It’s best to check the official website ahead of your visit.

  • From 1 March to 31 October: 10 am to 5:15 pm, last admission 4 pm.
  • From November 1 to February 28: 10 am to 4:15 pm, last admission 3 pm.

Opening Hours of St George’s Chapel:

St. George’s Chapel is a working church with a different schedule. For the most up-to-date information, and for times of worship or services, check the website.

Hours: The Chapel is open to ticketed visitors of the Castle Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. St George’s Chapel also closes early on December 23 and 24 at 1 pm.

Pro Tip: One of the best ways to experience the chapel is to attend a service. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, it’s the only way to see the chapel. You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the service. If you do attend a service in the chapel, line up 30 minutes before the service along with Castle Hill on the side of the Castle.

I was there recently on a Sunday and attended a Mattins service, which was mainly organ music and a capella singing. The music was divine and it made the Gothic architecture come alive. To see what my visit was like, check out the stories on my Instagram .

You can buy tickets either at the ticket offices on-site or online. We recommend booking tickets well in advance.

Admission: £28 per adult | £18 for 18-24 year olds | £15.50 Children 5-16 | Free >5

Family Pricing : £60.50 for 2 Adults and 3 Children.

Pro Tip:  Skip the line by booking your ticket online ahead of time or by joining one of our  small group tours of London and Windsor —you’ll get more out of your visit.

How Long To Spend at Windsor Castle

Short Answer: 2 hours.

You’ll need a minimum of 2 hours at Windsor Castle, but 3 hours is best. There’s a lot of ground to cover and it’s a lovely trip out of London. In fact, it would be a good idea to spend a whole morning at Windsor Castle if you have the time, so you can see it without rushing.

Pro Tip: The best way to approach the top things to see at Windsor Castle is to divide the castle into two geographical sections, the upper and lower wards. I like to see the State Apartments inside the castle first, then see St George’s Chapel in the lower ward afterward.

How To Get To Windsor Castle

The Windsor Royal station is an easy way to get to Windsor castle from London.

Windsor Castle is about an hour and twenty minutes west of London near Heathrow Airport. The small town around the castle is also called Windsor. You can easily get there by car, train, or bus (called a motor coach in the UK).

From Paddington station in Central London, take any GWR train (GWR) headed to Slough. Purchase tickets from a machine at the station or on the GWR train app. From Slough, take the next train to Windsor & Eton Central, a 10-minute train ride.

Exit the train station through a gallery of shops, and you’ll see Windsor Castle in front of you across the street. It is an easy 3-minute walk from the train station.

By Car or Bus (Coach)

It could take anywhere from 50 minutes to 2 hours by car, depending on London traffic and how long it takes to get out of the city center. If you’re driving from London to Oxford, Blenheim Palace, Stonehenge, or Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), Windsor Castle is on the way, just on the other side of Heathrow Airport.

Pro Tip: If you do drive, get there early to find nearby parking. Parking fills up by noon.

Windsor Castle

What to see: windsor castle.

Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation (over 900 years). It is one of the Queen’s three official residences, and is often said to be her favourite. She spends most of her private weekends at Windsor. The Royal Standard flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle when the Queen is in residence – at other times, the Union Jack flag flies in its place.  During Covid 19 the Queen has been in residence almost all of the time.

Samuel Pepys proclaimed the Castle to be “the most romantique castle that is in the world”. That was in 1666, and the same is still true today. A “Must Visit” destination.   [ BOOK TICKETS ]

Windsor Castle from a Distance

The origins of Windsor were in the 7th century Saxon settlement of Windlesora, where the present day village of Old Windsor is located. The town of Windsor is correctly known as “New Windsor” – the word “new” being used in a strictly relative sense!

Windsor Castle History

Windsor Castle was first built by William the Conqueror, following his invasion of England in 1066. The original structure was built from timber with earth fortifications. The Castle held an obvious strategic position on a steep hill overlooking the River Thames, and was part of a ring of castles around London, with the Tower of London, one day’s march away, at its heart.

The Castle was later rebuilt in stone, and grew in importance over the years. Henry II constructed the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the Castle’s primary role became that of a royal palace. The Castle has remained largely unchanged since the early nineteenth century, apart from the restoration work following the fire (see below).   [ BOOK TICKETS ]

The Fire at Windsor Castle

The Fire of Windsor Castle took place on 20 November 1992 – ironically the 45th wedding anniversary of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. During work on some of the State Rooms in the castle, a fire broke out in the north-east part of the Castle and rapidly spread to engulf many rooms.

The Fire at Windsor Castle 1992

Fortunately most treasures and works of art had been removed temporarily and so few items were lost, although over 100 rooms in the Castle were badly damaged or destroyed. The fire took 250 firefighters some 15 hours to extinguish. The Castle was renovated, the aim being to restore the damaged rooms to their former glory using authentic materials and craftsmanship, and was re-opened in 1997 after five years of work. The cost of the renovation was £37 million.  More on Wikipedia .

Visiting Windsor Castle in 2022

Windsor Castle is much larger than most people realise (more than 12 acres), and it is worth allowing at least two hours for your visit. The Castle is open every day except Garter Day (One day in June every year), Easter, Christmas, and one or two other days during the year. Opening times and access may be restricted at certain times of the year due to state functions.

Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard is one of the highlights of a visit to Windsor. A band usually accompanies the Guards, although this is subject to weather conditions.

The Guards can be watched as they march up the High Street and into the Castle, but to see the actual ‘changing’ ceremony you need to have paid to go into the Castle. The Ceremony takes place outside the Guardroom in the Lower Ward of the Castle. To watch the Guards march up the High Street takes only 10 minutes; to watch the actual ceremony inside the Castle takes about 30 minutes.

windsor castle tour opening times

The Guard March takes place all year round, dependant on the weather. The Guards march on alternate days from August to March and daily during April, May, June and July, but never on a Sunday. The schedule (see final paragraph) is set by the British Army and is subject to change.

To watch the new Guards march up the High Street you need to be positioned in the High Street at 10.50am. Once inside the Castle, the Guards change outside the Guardroom in the Lower Ward at 11.00am. The sentries are changed throughout the day. The old Guards then march back to the barracks at about 11.25am.

Please note that traffic is stopped when the guards make their way between the barracks on Sheet Street, along the High Street and into the Castle. Traffic Wardens and Police control traffic on the following approaches to the centre of town: Thames Street, the junction of Victoria Street and Sheet Street and near the junction of Frances Road and Sheet Street. Traffic is usually stopped between 10.45am and 11am (as the guards march to the Castle) and between 11.15am and 11.30am (as they return to the Barracks).

Changing the Guard takes place:

The ceremony usually takes place at 11:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but the schedule can change, check the  British Army website  for details. The guards march through Windsor town into the Castle, where the guard change takes place.

Changing of the Guard does not take place on Sunday

Provisional Schedule  (please note that this schedule is set by the British Army and is subject to change).

The Castle is a pleasure to walk around. As you proceed through the various wards and terraces, you will have excellent views of the Round Tower, of the various fortifications, and of the surrounding countryside, including Eton and the River Thames.

Saint George’s Chapel

The magnificent and beautiful St George’s Chapel was started in 1475 by Edward IV and was completed fifty years later by Henry VIII. It ranks among the finest examples of late medieval architecture (perpendicular gothic) in the UK. Ten monarchs are buried in the Chapel, including Henry VIII with his wife Jane Seymour. The Chapel is the Chapel of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Britain’s highest Order of Chivalry. The Order was founded by Edward III in 1348 and the Garter Knights are selected by the Queen. The Ceremony of the Garter takes place on 14th June 1999, and is attended by the Garter Knights, the Queen and members of the Royal Family.

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House  is an amazing dolls’ house built on a scale of 1 to 12. It contains working lifts, running water and electricity, and took 1500 craftsmen three years to complete.

The idea of creating a dolls’ house for the Queen was that of the King’s cousin, Princess Marie Louise.

After returning home from a visit to the King and Queen at Windsor Castle, during which they had shown her much kindness, Princess Marie Louise found her mother and her sister assembling a collection of miniature furniture for Queen Mary.

Queen Mary was known as a collector of miniature objects including Fabergé animals, children’s silver furniture and other examples of ‘tiny craft’. This gave Princess Marie Louise an idea. She announced to her family that she would commission a dolls’ house as a present for the Queen…

There are around 150 people for whom Windsor Castle is their home. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was often in residence many weekends in her lifetime.

On this page we discuss your ticket options as well as how long you will need and details of what you will see at Windsor Castle including the Changing of the Guard. Please note St George's Chapel is shut to visitors on Sundays.

Changing of the Guard and closures

Changing of the Guard happens between 11am and 11.30am also adding to the morning rush. Many of the coach tours will commonly stay until around midday departing after the Changing of the Guard.

On Sundays St George's is closed for religious services. Access to the Chapel may be limited after 13.30, particularly on Saturdays. It is recommended to arrive early to avoid missing out.

Lastly, the castle may close for state visits and special occasions so do consult the Windsor Castle official website . This also states the days during the winter when Changing of the Guard takes place and seasonable closing times.

It follows that if you're an independent visitor during the summer months, a good strategy is to visit the other attractions of Windsor & Eton during the morning and visit the castle after lunch. Visitor numbers are also much higher at weekends than during the week (and as such tickets for these peak times are now a little more expensive).

Windsor Castle location

Windsor Castle is very easy to find. Coming out from Windsor and Eton Central Station, or Windsor and Eton Riverside Station, the castle walls can be seen in front of you. The main entrance to Windsor Castle is at the top of Castle Hill, on the right. The address of Windsor Castle is Castle Hill, Windsor, SL4 1PD. Check Windsor Castle map location .

How long your visit will take and queues

During the winter months when there are no queues, the average visitor will take 90 minutes to two hours in the Castle, although the official Windsor Castle website suggest three hours or more.

At peak times during the summer there are often long queues to the entrance of the State Apartments.

Inside Windsor Castle

On paying your admission you pass through airline style security where bags are put through an x-ray machine and you empty your pockets and pass through a detector door. Once through the security you pick up your audio phone at the kiosk opposite.

You simply key in the number of the room or place you are in and a full commentary is given. There are many optional commentaries within some commentaries that go into great detail about individual items.

There are separate guides for those with hearing or sight loss.

In person guided tours

There are also classic guided tours that leave regularly from near the entrance on a schedule, and last around thirty minutes.

Photography

No photography or video recording is allowed within the State Apartments or St George's Chapel. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the State Apartments or St George's Chapel. You will be asked to place drinks and food in closed bags before being admitted to the castle. You can purchase bottled water at the Courtyard Shop at the beginning of your visit.

Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle Changing of the Guard

Many visitors like to time their visit so they can view the Changing of the Guard. This is very similar to that practiced in central London at Buckingham Palace or Horse Guards.

Changing of the Guard at Windsor usually takes place at 11am within the Castle grounds Mondays to Saturdays from April until the end of July and on alternate days for the rest of the year, weather permitting.

If you're not visiting the Castle you can still see the band marching through the town around 11am. The barracks is about 500m from the castle, the band passes the Guildhall and Old Town before turning into the castle at Queen Victoria's statue.

If you're in the Castle, congregate in the parade ground by the main exit in front of St George's Chapel.

The whole thing takes around thirty minutes here.

State Apartments, Windsor Castle

Most people after getting their introductions and briefings about the castle on their tour will make their way past the moat of the Round Tower (not open to the public) up to the north terrace. It is here that the entrance to the State Apartments is situated.

From the north terrace you gaze down to Windsor town below and get far reaching views of the surrounding countryside. Windsor town looks much smaller from up here.

2019 restoration and opening of the State Entrance Hall

In 2019 Windsor Castle went through an extended period of restoration of the inner Hall, formerly closed to the public. The Inner Hall (closed by Queen Victoria) leads visitors to the State Entrance Hall, where guests of the Crown are welcomed to Windsor, a magnificent welcoming area.

From the Inner Hall Visitors can visit the State Apartments, Semi-State Rooms and Queen Mary's Dolls' House. The Dolls' House is precisely what you'd expect, a single miniature dolls' house suitable for royalty complete with miniature crown jewels.

Much of the southern part of the State Apartments was destroyed by fire in 1992 and has been restored. Arguably your experience is much the better for it; some of the rooms that were beginning to look faded and antique now really do bring alive what the original rooms would have looked like on completion.

Such are the treasures that you can perhaps look at an obscure painting only to realise that your are inches from an original Rubens when looking at the information on it.

St George's Chapel

St George's Chapel Windsor Castle

St George's Chapel is a working church with services every day. St. George's Chapel is open daily but closed to visitors on Sundays as services are held throughout the day. Worshipers are welcome to attend the services. The church also closes earlier than the rest of the castle to prepare for the evening service.

If you're entering the castle from early afternoon onwards it is worth making St George's your first port of call.

More recently, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding was held in St George's Chapel. Another Royal wedding at Windsor followed shortly afterwards when Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot in St George's Chapel.

Also within the chapel are the tombs of ten sovereigns, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour, and Charles I. The Gothic architecture is particularly impressive, particularly the roof.

Perhaps most fascinating and differentiating the chapel from similar churches and abbeys is the Order of the Garter, the world's oldest national order of knighthood in continuous existence, with a history stretching back to King Edward III in medieval times.

Membership of the Order is extremely limited and includes the monarch of the United Kingdom, the Prince of Wales and not more than twenty-four companion members. St George's is home to the Order, as St. George is patron saint and also patron saint of soldiers and also of England. Members are each assigned a stall in the chapel choir above which his or her heraldic devices are displayed.

About Windsor Castle

About Windsor Castle

Before we get started, let’s look into a little background of Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is one of the official residences to the King. Founded in the 11th century by William the Conquerer, Windsor Castle has seen its fair share of history with 39 monarchs occupying its walls for a whopping 10 centuries.

What makes a visit to this castle so unique is that it was used regularly by the Royal Family. It was Queen Elizabeth’s residence of choice during her private weekends. I am not sure if King Charles will choose this residence, but it still cool to know that he might be somewhere in the vicinity. But if you want to know if the royals are home or not, look for the royal standard flag flying above the Round Tower. If that is flying, the King is in. If not, you’ll see the Union Flag flying instead.

History & more information

Located in the county of Berkshire, Windsor Castle is the English royal residence compromising of two quadrilateral-shaped buildings and covering over 13 acres of ground.

The castle has been the home of British kings and queens for over 1,000 years and is currently the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II who takes up official residence every Easter and visits periodically throughout the year.

The location for Windsor Castle, high above the Thames and on the edge of Saxon hunting ground, was chosen by William the Conqueror in 1070 and construction lasted 16 years. The areas easy access to London and proximity to royal hunting ground made it the perfect location.

Over the years, many amendments have been made to the castle and its surrounding grounds but the biggest change came in 1992 when a fire broke out in Queen Victoria’s private Chapel.

The flames engulfed the chapel, the ceiling of St George’s Hall, and the Grand Reception Room amongst other areas, all of which have been repaired under The Duke of Edinburgh’s committee and restored as close to the original condition as possible.

The work took five years to complete, and today the castle looks as it did when George IV left his gothic mark on the buildings in 1828.

Today the castle is used for ceremonial occasions, state visits, and royal banquets. There’s also a number of celebrations, courses, and lectures that take place throughout the year with guest speakers and live performances. Check out the castles event calendar online  to see what’s going on throughout the year!

Windsor Castle London

Windsor Castle is a royal residence located in the town of Windsor, just outside London, and is one of the world’s oldest and largest occupied castles. The castle has served as the home of British monarchs for over 900 years and is still used by the Queen as a weekend residence.

The history of Windsor Castle dates back to the 11th century when William the Conqueror built the original castle on the site in 1070. Since then, the castle has undergone many additions and renovations, including the famous St. George’s Chapel, which was completed in the 16th century.

One of the most popular attractions at Windsor Castle is the State Apartments, which were originally created in the 17th century for Charles II. The apartments include rooms such as the Grand Reception Room, the Waterloo Chamber, and the Queen’s Drawing Room, and are adorned with works of art and stunning furniture.

Another popular attraction at Windsor Castle is St. George’s Chapel, which is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England. The chapel is the final resting place of many famous figures, including King Henry VIII, and is also where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married in 2018.

Visitors to Windsor Castle can also witness the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place outside the castle gates. This ceremony is a quintessentially British tradition and involves the guard being changed over to a new unit of soldiers.

Throughout the year, there are many events and exhibitions held at Windsor Castle, including art exhibitions, concerts, and special tours. Visitors can also explore the castle’s many gardens and enjoy a stroll around the picturesque grounds.

One of the most fascinating things about Windsor Castle is the fact that it is still a functioning royal residence. Visitors can often see members of the Royal Family coming and going from the castle, and can even catch a glimpse of the Queen herself.

The castle is also home to the Royal Collection, which is one of the largest and most important art collections in the world. The collection includes works by many famous artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt, and is displayed in the State Apartments.

Windsor Castle is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting London. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and connection to the Royal Family make it a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Whether you’re interested in art, history, or just want to catch a glimpse of the Queen, Windsor Castle has something for everyone.
