When you have packed several days or weeks of clothes into your cruise luggage , keeping your clothes looking presentable and (relatively) wrinkle-free can be challenging. Thankfully there are several options available to all cruisers.

Generally, travel irons on cruise ships are prohibited. Any you won’t find any cruise approved steamers either. These items present a potential fire hazard. While using a travel iron in your cabin is not permitted, you have other cruise ship laundry options that can address your needs.

There is no reason you can’t have impeccably wrinkle-free clothing throughout your stay on a cruise ship. Keep reading to get details on your options.

Can You Bring Travel Irons On Cruise Ships?

Travel irons are one of many restricted items for use on cruise ships because irons present a potential fire hazard. As you can imagine, an iron left unattended in a stateroom could be a serious recipe for disaster that cruise lines would like to avoid at all costs.

We are aware of only one cruise line that potentially permits passengers to bring travel irons on the ship: Marella Cruises(owned by Tui Cruises). Marella permits guests to bring travel irons onto the ship, but it reserves the right to confiscate any irons determined to be a safety hazard. Confiscated items will be returned at the end of your cruise.

Even though you are largely prohibited from packing your travel iron, you don’t have to resign yourself to a vacation filled with wrinkled clothes. Depending on the cruise line, you will have several options available. Some cruise lines provide self-service laundry facilities, which in addition to a laundry room with washers and dryers, will contain irons and ironing boards for passenger use. While the washers and dryers usually have a charge, the ironing equipment typically does not.

Most cruise lines also offer professional ship laundry services such as dry-cleaning and pressing to ensure your clothes return to you in perfect condition. Usually, these services will come at an extra expense.

Can You Bring A Steamer On A Cruise Ship?

Most cruise lines treat clothes steamers the same way they treat travel irons: They are prohibited. They will be confiscated if found.

Alternatives To Using A Travel Iron Or Clothes Steamer On A Cruise

Wrinkle-free or wrinkle-resistant clothing.

One of the best ways to eliminate the need for clothing irons is to bring only the type of clothing that does not require ironing. This type of clothing exists, and there are many wrinkle-resistant fabrics on the market.

Several clothing manufacturers produce travel clothing made out of wrinkle-resistant fabric to ensure you do not need to do any ironing. However, these clothes generally perform best when placed in a dryer, and you may not have easy access to a dryer on a cruise ship.

Suppose travel clothing is not your style – which tends to be casual and somewhat unfashionable. In that case, you can opt for normal clothing made out of wrinkle-resistant fabric. For these purposes, some of the best fabrics include polyester, nylon, acrylic, and olefin.

Suppose you prefer natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. In that case, you can find these fabrics blended with synthetics that will be far less prone to creasing and wrinkling, especially if you opt for a knit or stretch fabric instead of non-stretch woven material.

Wrinkle-Release Spray

Wrinkle-releasing sprays such as Downy Release are an excellent way to de-wrinkle your clothing before wearing it. While this chemical method may not be as effective as ironing, it will still serve its purpose to a large degree.

Advanced Dry-Cleaning

Alternatively, you can have your clothing dry-cleaned before packing and request that they do a heavy starching on the fabrics. Leave these clothing items in their dry-cleaning bags, roll them up while still in the bags, and then pack them carefully. This packing method will ensure that the clothes are as crease-free as possible when you unpack them in your stateroom.

Shower Steam

The old steamy shower trick is another option that can be extremely effective. The best way to steam your clothing without a steamer is to run the shower at the highest temperature possible for around two minutes. Next, hang the clothing in the shower, and leave the room while ensuring that you close it up properly to keep in as much heat and steam as possible.

Typically, cruise lines permit hair dryers and other hair tools like flat irons on board. Thus, a hair straightener can be used as an alternative to a travel iron and is especially useful for items such as collars and cuffs on shirts.

A hairdryer can be used similarly to eliminate creases or wrinkles from your clothing quickly. You can use the hairdryer after applying a wrinkle-release spray to enhance the effect of both methods.

Packing To Prevent Wrinkled Clothing

You can also use several time-tested packing hacks to prevent or minimize wrinkles.

A hard-shelled suitcase is another brilliant idea to keep your clothes free of wrinkles when traveling. Soft suitcases tend to allow the clothes inside them to be squashed, causing pressure which results in creases and wrinkles.

Do not overpack your suitcases, as this pressure will also cause wrinkles in your clothing. When folding your clothes, fold them in bundles so that there are fewer small folds. Start by folding your smaller items in the middle; then, fold your larger items over them until you have a neat bundle of folded clothing.

Packing cubes can be purchased at many stores. These smart devices will help prevent wrinkles while saving space in your luggage.

When it comes to formal items, stuff the bodices and shoulders with tissue paper to help them retain their stiffness and reduce the chances of wrinkles or creases.

Most importantly, remember to unpack and hang your clothing as soon as possible once you have entered your stateroom. The more time your clothes spend in your luggage, the higher the chance of them becoming wrinkled.

Cruise Laundry and Pressing Service

Most cruise lines offer a laundry and pressing service for a fee. Items are usually priced individually, ranging from about 2$-10$ per clothing item. Some cruise lines offer a laundry special where items are not priced individually (ie. $30 a filled bag).

Dealing with Wrinkles from Packing

Downy wrinkle release.

One of the must-have cruise accessories that I always pack, is Downy Wrinkle Release . A small travel size bottle will do.

While it doesn’t get clothes as crisp looking as pressing or ironing, if you’ve ironed your clothing before you pack, this should work to “release” the wrinkles.

My trick is to hang the item and use some shower steam after a spray of the wrinkle release spray. Holding the item and tugging gently after the spray is a crucial step as well.

Use a Hair Straightener

Did you know that although you cannot bring an iron on a cruise, hair straighteners are allowed? Although I haven’t done it, I’ve heard of many ladies using a little hair straightener trick to iron out a stubborn wrinkle in a pinch.

Even if a cruise ship doesn’t have self serve laundry facilities, you can still wash some clothing items in your cabin. For intimates, bathing suits, items with stains, or even items you want to wear again, simply wash in your cruise stateroom bathroom sink.

There may not always be a clothesline in the bathroom shower, but using magnetic hooks to hang items on the cabin wall is a good solution.

Magnet hooks

Magnet hooks are an experienced cruiser’s “secret”. Most cruise cabin walls are metal, so heavy duty magnet hooks are a great way to organize your stateroom .

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Adjust the iron temperature according to the fabric type to avoid damaging delicate fabrics or not effectively removing wrinkles from sturdy materials.
  • Respect designated ironing areas onboard and be mindful of others waiting to use the facilities. Maintain a respectful and efficient ironing routine, avoiding hogging the ironing facilities and cleaning up after yourself.
  • Practice ironing safety by placing the iron on a stable surface, keeping it away from flammable materials, unplugging it when not in use, allowing it to cool down before storing, and using oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling the iron.
  • Avoid ironing clothes on the body to prevent accidental burns and injuries. Remove clothes before ironing and iron them separately. Be cautious of hot iron surfaces and avoid ironing near body parts.

Familiarize Yourself with the Cruise Ship’s Ironing Policy

Before you embark on your cruise, make sure you familiarize yourself with the ship’s ironing policy. This will help you understand the rules and regulations surrounding ironing on board. Research ironing alternatives and understand the consequences of violating the ironing policy.

Many cruise ships have strict regulations when it comes to ironing due to safety concerns. Open flames and hot irons can pose a risk in a confined space like a ship. As a result, most cruise lines do not allow guests to bring their own irons on board. However, they often provide self-service laundry facilities equipped with irons. Some ships even offer pressing services for a fee.

Understanding these alternatives will help you better plan your wardrobe and ensure your clothes stay wrinkle-free throughout your cruise.

Speaking of wardrobe, the next step is to pack wrinkle-resistant clothing to minimize the need for ironing.

Pack Wrinkle-Resistant Clothing

When you’re getting ready for your cruise, make sure to pack plenty of wrinkle-resistant clothing.

Did you know that 80% of travelers prefer clothing that doesn’t require ironing?

This travel hack of choosing the best wrinkle-resistant fabrics for your vacation wardrobe will save you time and effort on your cruise.

Opt for fabrics like polyester, nylon, and spandex, as they are known for their wrinkle-resistant properties.

These materials are not only easy to pack, but also quick to dry, making them perfect for your cruise.

Additionally, consider packing clothes in dark colors or patterns, as they tend to hide wrinkles better.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your vacation wardrobe stays neat and wrinkle-free.

Now, let’s explore how to use the onboard laundry service to further simplify your cruise experience.

Use the Onboard Laundry Service

To make your life easier, don’t forget to take advantage of the onboard laundry service during your trip.

While some cruise ships charge a fee for this service, it is well worth it for the convenience it provides. Instead of worrying about wrinkled clothes, you can simply drop off your laundry and have it returned to you fresh and neatly pressed.

This is especially beneficial for those who have packed wrinkle-resistant clothing but still want that crisp, polished look. The laundry service fees vary depending on the cruise line, but they are generally reasonable considering the time and effort saved.

So, sit back, relax, and let the onboard laundry service take care of your laundry needs.

Now, let’s move on to choosing the right ironing tools and accessories for your ironing needs.

Choose the Right Ironing Tools and Accessories

Make your ironing experience a breeze by selecting the perfect ironing tools and accessories that will transform your clothes from drab to fab in no time. When it comes to ironing techniques, it’s important to consider the fabric care labels on your clothing to ensure you use the right heat setting and avoid damaging your garments. To help you choose the right ironing tools, take a look at the table below:

By selecting the appropriate ironing tools and accessories, you can achieve professional-looking results while taking care of your clothes. Now, let’s move on to setting up your ironing station in a safe and convenient area.

Set Up Your Ironing Station in a Safe and Convenient Area

Once you’ve found the perfect spot, you’ll be amazed at how effortlessly your ironing station transforms into a safe haven for wrinkle-free clothes. Here are three ironing tips and hacks that will make your ironing experience on a cruise ship a breeze:

Invest in a portable ironing board: A compact and lightweight ironing board is essential for setting up your ironing station. Look for one that can be easily stored and transported.

Use a heat-resistant mat or pad: Protect the surface you are ironing on by using a heat-resistant mat or pad. This will prevent any accidental damage to the cruise ship’s furniture or carpet.

Keep a spray bottle handy: Fill a small spray bottle with water to moisten stubborn wrinkles. Spritz the garment lightly before ironing to help smooth out the fabric.

With these ironing tips and hacks, you’ll be ready to tackle the next step: preparing your garments for ironing.

Prepare Your Garments for Ironing

To prepare your garments for ironing, follow these steps:

  • Check the fabric care labels on your garments for ironing instructions.
  • Sort your clothes based on fabric type, separating delicate items from sturdier ones.
  • Ensure your garments are clean and dry before ironing.
  • Remove any lint or loose threads using a lint roller or fabric brush.
  • Lightly dampen the fabric with a spray bottle if needed to smooth out stubborn wrinkles.

Remember to always follow proper ironing techniques to prevent damage to your clothes.

Transitioning into the next section, let’s talk about how to master these techniques for a wrinkle-free wardrobe.

Follow Proper Ironing Techniques

Now that your garments are ready, it’s time to master the proper ironing techniques for a wrinkle-free wardrobe. Here are three essential ironing tips to ensure your clothes look their best on a cruise ship:

Set the iron temperature: Different fabrics require different heat settings. Consult the fabric care labels on your garments to determine the appropriate temperature. Adjust the iron accordingly to prevent damage or scorching.

Use steam wisely: Steam can help remove stubborn wrinkles. Fill the iron’s water reservoir and select the steam setting. Hold the iron above the garment and press the steam button, moving the iron in a downward motion. Avoid excessive steam on delicate fabrics.

Iron in the right order: Start with garments that require low heat and gradually increase the temperature for sturdier fabrics. Iron collars and cuffs first, then move to the body of the garment, using smooth and consistent strokes.

By following these proper ironing techniques, you can achieve a polished look for your cruise attire. Pay attention to fabric care labels and ironing temperatures to avoid any mishaps.

Pay Attention to Fabric Care Labels and Ironing Temperatures

Make sure to pay close attention to the fabric care labels and ironing temperatures to ensure your clothes look their best. Ironing techniques vary depending on the fabric, so it’s crucial to follow the instructions provided. To make it easier for you, I have created a table below that highlights the different fabric types, recommended ironing temperatures, and the corresponding ironing techniques. This will help you achieve the desired results without damaging your clothes. Remember to use the appropriate ironing tools, such as an ironing board and a steam iron, to ensure smooth and wrinkle-free garments. By following these guidelines, you can maintain a professional and polished appearance while on the cruise ship. Now, let’s move on to the next section, where we will discuss being mindful of time restrictions and considerate of other passengers.

Be Mindful of Time Restrictions and Considerate of Other Passengers

Being mindful of time restrictions and considerate of fellow travelers is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable experience onboard. Here are some tips to help you manage your time effectively and practice proper etiquette on a cruise ship:

Schedule your ironing time during non-peak hours to avoid inconveniencing other passengers.

Be efficient by ironing multiple items at once, using the appropriate temperature settings for each fabric.

Respect the designated ironing areas and be mindful of others waiting to use the facilities.

By following these guidelines, you can maintain a respectful and efficient ironing routine while onboard.

Once you have finished ironing, it’s important to practice safe ironing techniques and properly store your iron after use. [Transition sentence into the subsequent section about ‘practice safe ironing and properly store your iron after use.’]

Practice Safe Ironing and Properly Store Your Iron After Use

Remember to handle your iron with care and ensure it is safely stowed away after use, just like a delicate treasure in a hidden chest. When it comes to ironing on a cruise ship, safety should always be a top priority. To prevent accidents, it’s important to follow some ironing safety tips.

Firstly, make sure the iron is placed on a stable surface, away from any flammable materials. Always unplug the iron when not in use and allow it to cool down before storing it. When handling the iron, use oven mitts or a heat-resistant glove to protect your hands from burns. Additionally, avoid ironing clothes while they are still on your body to prevent accidental burns.

As for iron storage techniques, it’s crucial to wait for the iron to cool down completely before storing it. Use a heat-resistant iron storage bag or container to keep it safely tucked away, preventing any potential fire hazards.

By practicing safe ironing and properly storing your iron, you can enjoy wrinkle-free clothes on your cruise without compromising safety.

With a French Balcony, you’ll feel like you’re floating on air, with breathtaking views right outside your room. The French balcony design is a unique feature on river cruises that allows you to enjoy the picturesque scenery along the river banks without stepping outside.

Here are three advantages of having a French balcony on a river cruise:

Unobstructed Views: The floor-to-ceiling windows of a French balcony provide uninterrupted panoramas of the passing landscapes. You can admire the charming villages, historic castles, and lush vineyards from the comfort of your cabin.

Fresh Air: Although you can’t step out onto a French balcony, you can still open the sliding glass door to let in the gentle breeze and the sounds of the river. It creates a refreshing and immersive experience.

Privacy: The French balcony allows you to enjoy the views without being seen by others. You can relax in your own private space, savoring the beauty of the surroundings.

Exploring the scenic landscapes of France is an exciting part of any river cruise adventure.

Exploring the Scenic Landscapes of France

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of France’s picturesque landscapes as you embark on a journey through charming villages, historic castles, and lush vineyards. From the comfort of your river cruise ship, you’ll have the perfect vantage point to capture stunning scenic photography of the French countryside. As you sail along the tranquil waters, be prepared to indulge in the local cuisine that France is renowned for. From delicate pastries to mouthwatering cheeses and fine wines, your taste buds will be treated to a gastronomic adventure. Whether you choose to dine on board or explore the charming riverside towns, the flavors of France will leave you craving for more. As we delve further into the exploration of river cruise options, let’s now take a closer look at the different cabin options available on these magnificent ships.

Cabin Options on River Cruise Ships

When it comes to choosing a cabin on a river cruise ship, there are a few important factors to consider. Firstly, there are different types of cabins available, such as balcony cabins, French balcony cabins, and window cabins. Each type offers its own unique features and advantages.

Secondly, it is crucial to choose the right cabin that suits your needs and preferences, whether it’s a cabin with a view, extra space, or privacy.

Lastly, one of the key decisions to make is whether to opt for a balcony cabin, a French balcony cabin, or a window cabin, depending on your preference for open-air access or panoramic views.

Different Types of Cabins

Choose a cabin that suits your preferences, like a French balcony, and enjoy the stunning views of the river as you cruise along. French balconies are a popular option for river cruise cabins. They provide a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that opens to a railing, giving you a sense of being outside without actually stepping onto a full balcony.

These cabins are typically smaller in size compared to other cabin options, but they make up for it with their amenities. You can expect a comfortable bed, a well-appointed bathroom, and storage space for your belongings. Some French balcony cabins even come with additional perks like mini-fridges or sitting areas.

When choosing the right cabin for your needs, consider factors such as cabin location and any specific amenities you desire.

Transitioning into the next section, let’s explore how to select the perfect cabin for your river cruise experience.

Choosing the Right Cabin for Your Needs

To find the cabin that suits you best, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and desires for your upcoming river voyage. Here are three key factors to consider when selecting your cabin:

Location: Determine whether you prefer a cabin on the lower deck for a smoother ride or a higher deck for better views. Consider proximity to common areas, such as the dining room or lounge, if you prefer convenience.

Size: Assess how much space you require. If you plan to spend minimal time in your cabin, a smaller size may suffice. However, if you value comfort and relaxation, opt for a larger cabin with additional amenities.

Amenities: Research the amenities offered in different cabin categories. Some cabins come with private balconies or French balconies, allowing you to enjoy the scenic views from the privacy of your own space.

Considering these factors will help you make an informed decision regarding your cabin selection and the river cruise amenities that matter most to you.

Now let’s explore the differences between a balcony, French balcony, and window cabin.

Balcony vs. French Balcony vs. Window Cabin

When it comes to choosing the right cabin for your river cruise, one of the options you might consider is a balcony cabin. This type of cabin offers the advantage of having a private outdoor space where you can relax and enjoy the scenic views as you sail along the river.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option that still allows you to enjoy the views, a French balcony cabin might be the perfect choice for you. A French balcony is a floor-to-ceiling window that opens to give you a panoramic view of the river. It provides a similar experience to a traditional balcony, but at a lower cost.

Compared to a window cabin, a French balcony cabin offers a more immersive and engaging experience, allowing you to feel closer to the surroundings.

Now, let’s explore the activities and amenities on river cruises.

Cost and Budget Considerations

To truly make your river adventure unforgettable, it’s crucial to carefully consider the cost and budget factors. Here are three cost-effective alternatives to help you do just that:

Look for special offers and promotions: Keep an eye out for special deals and promotions offered by river cruise companies. They often have discounted rates or added perks that can help you save money while still enjoying a luxurious experience.

How to Iron Clothes on a Cruise Ship: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on a cruise vacation is exciting, but it often comes with the small challenge of keeping your clothes wrinkle-free. Since safety regulations on most cruise ships restrict passengers from using personal irons in their cabins, it’s essential to know how to iron clothes on a cruise ship using the tools they provide. This article will guide you through preparing to iron your clothes effectively.

How to Iron Clothes on a Cruise Ship

Step 1: Understanding Your Cruise Ship’s Ironing Policy

Before you set sail, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with your cruise ship’s ironing policy . The use of personal irons or steamers is generally prohibited on board due to the significant fire risk they pose in the confined space of a cabin. As a safety precaution, cruise ships are equipped with designated ironing rooms.

These facilities are often free to use and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The ironing rooms are typically outfitted with professional-grade irons and ironing boards, providing a safe and suitable environment for you to take care of your garments.

These communal ironing rooms can be found on various decks, ensuring convenience for passengers staying in different sections of the ship. Their locations are strategically chosen for easy access while keeping them isolated from high-traffic areas to minimize risk. To locate the ironing room, you can refer to the ship’s map, ask the cabin crew, or visit the guest services desk, where staff can provide you with detailed information about the ironing facilities, including their hours of operation.

It’s also wise to inquire about peak times so you can plan your ironing during quieter periods. Most passengers will want to iron their formal attire right before dinner or special events, leading to longer wait times. Knowing the ebb and flow of the ironing room can save you time and hassle.

Additionally, the guest services might offer helpful tips on the best times to use the facilities, or they may be able to reserve a time slot for you, ensuring that you have access when you need it most.

Lastly, remember to ask about the availability of ironing accessories. While the room will certainly have an iron and board, you may need to bring or request additional items such as a water jug for filling the iron’s reservoir or a protective cloth for delicate fabrics.

By understanding these policies and preparing accordingly, you can ensure that your clothes are pressed and presentable throughout your cruise.

Step 2: Gathering What You Need

After locating the ironing room, gather the clothes that need ironing along with any other ironing aids you prefer, such as a water spritzer or fabric freshener. Although the ironing room will have the essentials, you might want to bring your own accessories to enhance the ironing experience.

Ironing Your Clothes

With preparation out of the way, it’s time to tackle the actual ironing. This section will provide you with detailed steps to ensure your clothes are ironed perfectly and safely.

Step 1: Setting Up the Ironing Station

Proper setup of the ironing station is the first step towards ensuring a smooth ironing experience. Upon entering the ironing room, identify a free ironing board and iron.

Start by adjusting the height of the ironing board. It should be at a level where you can press down on your garments without having to bend over, thus preventing any back strain. The ideal height is typically at hip level, allowing you to iron comfortably while leveraging your body weight.

Next, inspect the iron to ensure it is clean and free of any residue that could transfer to your clothing. Fill the water reservoir to the indicated maximum line if you plan to use steam. It’s important not to overfill the iron as this could lead to water leaks and potential fabric damage. With the iron filled, plug it into the nearest outlet, ensuring the cord does not create a tripping hazard in the walking area.

Now, turn on the iron and select the appropriate fabric setting. Irons on cruise ships usually come with a guide or label indicating which settings are best for different types of fabrics. If you’re ironing a cotton shirt, for example, you’ll want to use a higher heat setting than for a delicate silk blouse.

When in doubt, err on the side of caution and choose a lower setting to avoid any potential damage. While the iron heats up, use this time to organize your garments by fabric type, starting with those requiring the lowest temperature. This will save you time as you won’t have to adjust the settings as frequently.

Allow the iron a few minutes to reach the desired temperature. Most modern irons will have an indicator light that turns off when the set temperature is reached.

If the iron has been left on a high setting by the previous user, it might be hot already, so always test the iron on a small, inconspicuous area of the garment or a pressing cloth first to ensure it doesn’t scorch the fabric.

As you wait for the iron to warm up, lay out your garments on a nearby table or hanging area. Smooth out any folded creases and prepare any ironing aids you might use, such as starch or a spray bottle of water. This proactive approach will streamline your ironing process, allowing you to move from one item to the next without interruption.

Step 2: The Ironing Process

Mastering the ironing process on a cruise ship is all about technique and order. Start by sorting your clothing according to the heat required—begin with delicate items like silk or polyester, which need a low heat setting, and progress to cotton and linen, which can withstand higher heat.

Drape the first garment you’re ironing over the board, positioning it so the part you’re ironing is flat against the surface while the rest of the garment hangs freely, avoiding additional wrinkles.

For a shirt, for example, start with the collar. Pop it to lay flat on the board, apply the iron with gentle pressure, and move it from the points of the collar inwards.

This avoids creasing the edge. Next, move on to the cuffs, ironing the inside first and then the outside. When ironing sleeves, lay them flat and iron from the shoulder down to the cuff, being careful to iron out any creases at the seams.

With the smaller parts done, you can proceed to larger sections. Begin with the back of the shirt, ironing from the top downwards, and then each front panel.

When ironing around buttons, never iron over them as this can damage both the buttons and the iron; instead, carefully work around them. For pants, start at the top and work your way down each leg, aligning any creases or pleats as you go.

During the ironing process, ensure the iron’s temperature is always appropriate for the current garment. If you need to increase the temperature for a thicker fabric, allow the iron to heat up before continuing.

Conversely, if you switch back to a delicate fabric, let the iron cool down or test it on a pressing cloth to avoid burns. Always keep the iron moving to prevent scorching, and if a garment is particularly wrinkled, you can use a light spray of water to help relax the fibers before ironing.

After each garment is ironed, immediately hang it up or lay it flat to cool down. This will help set the press and ensure that your clothes remain wrinkle-free. With patience and attention to detail, your clothing will look crisp and fresh, ready for any cruise ship event or excursion.

Step 3: Dealing with Stubborn Wrinkles

Stubborn wrinkles can be a challenge, but with the right technique, they can be smoothed out. If you come across a persistent crease, the steam function on the iron can be your best ally. When using steam, it’s important to keep the iron moving and avoid leaving it in one spot for too long, which could overly dampen or even damage the fabric.

Begin by holding the iron a few inches away from the fabric surface and press the steam button in short bursts to gently moisten and heat the fibers. This helps relax the fabric and makes it easier to smooth out the wrinkles.

Once you’ve steamed the area, lay the garment flat on the ironing board and iron over the wrinkled section using gentle pressure.

Use the nose of the iron to get into tight spaces or around buttons and seams. For deep-set creases, you may need to repeat the steaming process a couple of times. Remember to always check the fabric care label to ensure that steam is safe to use on the material you’re ironing.

For delicate fabrics such as silk, chiffon, or sheer materials, direct contact with the iron could cause heat marks or even burns.

In such cases, hover the iron just above the fabric surface and use the steam function to relax the wrinkles. You can also use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric for an added layer of protection. The pressing cloth helps distribute the heat more evenly and prevents direct contact with the delicate fibers.

It’s also helpful to iron delicate items inside out to protect the outer surface from shine and iron marks. And if you’re working with a fabric that’s prone to water spots, like silk or wool, be cautious with the amount of steam you apply. Use the lowest steam setting and always test on an inconspicuous area first.

After steaming and ironing out the wrinkles, let the fabric cool and dry completely before wearing or storing it. This will set the smoothness you’ve achieved and prevent new wrinkles from forming.

With these careful steps, even the most stubborn wrinkles can be coaxed out, leaving you with garments that look professionally pressed and ready to wear.

Step 4: Finishing Up

After you’ve ironed your garments, immediately hang them on hangers or fold them neatly to maintain their crisp appearance. Leave the ironing room tidy for the next passenger, unplugging the iron and emptying any remaining water.

When traveling on a cruise, it’s common to find your clothes wrinkled. I used to wonder how people kept their clothes wrinkle-free when irons weren’t allowed on cruise ships.

In this post, I’ll share tips for keeping your clothes looking fresh and preventing wrinkles while traveling.

Table of Contents

Do Cruise Ships Have Irons?

Cruise ships do not provide irons or ironing boards in cabins due to the fire risk they pose. However, some cruise lines offer irons in the onboard laundromat for guests.

Instead of providing irons in cabins, cruise ships offer laundry and pressing services. Laundry services on cruise ships often have an added fee but might be free depending on your loyalty status, cabin category, or length of cruise.

Some cruise lines offer self-serve laundry services, which are great for ironing out wrinkles quickly.

But not all cruise lines offer self-serve laundromats.

If your cruise ship only offers full-service laundry, you may need to wait to have your clothing pressed. If you want to look your best on the cruise ship’s formal night , inspect your clothing on embarkation day, and have your formal wear pressed before formal night.

The turnaround time for full-service laundry is usually less than 24 hours. Some cruise ships offer same-day laundry service for an additional fee. But don’t expect the cruise line to press your clothing on short notice.

Can You Bring an Iron on a Cruise Ship?

Due to fire safety concerns, most cruise lines do not allow guests to bring an iron on a cruise ship.

You can use the onboard laundry services if you require iron or pressing services.

What Happens if You Bring an Iron on a Cruise Ship?

If you’re caught bringing an iron on a cruise ship, it will be confiscated. The cruise line may give the iron back at the end of the cruise, but they reserve the right to keep all prohibited items .

Cruise lines take passenger safety very seriously, and there are no exceptions to the rule.

Fires are one of the most dangerous risks to a cruise ship. To protect yourself, other passengers, crew members, and the vessels, do everyone a favor and leave the iron at home.

Can You Bring a Clothes Steamer on a Cruise?

Clothes steamers are usually permitted on cruise ships. Like clothing irons, they present a possible fire risk and are prohibited on most cruise lines.

How to Remove Wrinkles from Clothes While Travelling

Several times, I’ve begun getting ready for a formal night, only to find a wrinkled blouse or dress. And I can’t count how many times Marcello’s dress shirts get wrinkled while traveling.

Below are some tips I use to remove wrinkles from my clothes without an iron.

Wrinkle Release Spray

I never go on a cruise vacation without Downy Wrinkle Releaser . The small travel bottle doesn’t take up much space in my luggage and removes wrinkles from clothing without an iron.

The spray isn’t always effective, and you won’t get the nice clean lines an iron provides.

But it does the trick if you’re in a pinch and need to remove wrinkles.

Simply spray your clothing, and give it a gentle tug to release the wrinkles.

If you are in a hurry, use a light spray, so you don’t need to wait for the clothes to dry. Otherwise, give it a good spray, a gentle tug, and hang it to dry. After 30 minutes, your clothing is dry and wrinkle-free.

Tip: If you’re struggling to remove wrinkles with the wrinkle-release spray, hang your clothes in the bathroom and let the steam release the wrinkles before applying the spray.

Shower Steam

Bathroom with shower cabin, toilet on a cruise ship

You can use the steam from the shower to remove wrinkles in your clothes. Hang your clothes from the hook on the back of the door, and let the shower run on high heat.

Unlike hotels, the showers on most cruise ships get pretty hot . The heat can help release wrinkles in a matter of minutes.

After a few minutes in the steam, tug gently on the bottom of your clothes to remove wrinkles.

You’ll be surprised how effective it works.

Some cruise ship showers only get medium hot. But if you look closely at the shower head, you can push it in and keep turning it to increase the water temperature.

Tip: If you’re worried about water conservation, hang your clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower.

Hand Washing

If you don’t want to pay for laundry services, you can hand wash your clothes in the cabin bathroom sink.

The bathrooms on most cruise ships are uncomfortably small, but they can work.

After washing your clothes in the sink, you can hang them to dry from the clothesline or the hook on the back of the bathroom door.

Some cruise ships don’t provide either, so it’s a good idea to bring a magnetic hook to stick on the door.

How to Prevent Wrinkles in Clothing While Travelling

Removing wrinkles from your clothing isn’t difficult. But, it makes it easier if you prevent wrinkles from forming in your clothing from the start.

The following tips will help you prevent wrinkles in your clothing while traveling.

Choose Wrinkle Free Clothing

Many clothing options use wrinkle-resistant fabrics. Most wrinkle-free clothes are casual-style, but you can find wrinkle-resistant business casual and formal wear.

You can find some blended fabrics that resist wrinkling if you prefer cotton or other natural fabrics. Blended fabrics aren’t 100% wrinkle-free, but they help minimize wrinkles while traveling.

Don’t Overpack

Woman kneeling on over packed luggage with wrinkled clothes

I am notorious for overpacking. I can’t help but be prepared for all kinds of weather, events, and styles.

But the added weight from the clothes and pressure from the overfilled suitcase can form wrinkles in clothing.

If you want to prevent wrinkles in your clothing while traveling, it’s best to ensure that you pack the right amount of clothes.

Additionally, your clothes may shift while traveling if you don’t pack a full suitcase. The shifting can create wrinkles as they unfold in the suitcase. Add a towel or two to fill the suitcase to prevent your clothes from moving around.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a product you won’t understand until you try them. I always thought they were a gimmick, but now I can’t travel anywhere without them.

The tightly packed cubes compress your clothing into neat little cubes. Unlike an overstuffed suitcase, the cubes keep your clothes adequately folded and minimize wrinkles.

They also help with organization, as you can package similar items in the same cube.

Can I Take A Travel Iron On My Cruise?

by · Published 14th February 2022 · Updated 14th February 2022

You’re going on a cruise, you are taking formal gear that has been screwed up in your suitcase for over 24 hours, of course you need an iron… why wouldn’t you? Sadly most cruise lines do not allow travel irons to be packed and taken on board. Check out this post to find out the rules for each cruise line and who allows travel irons.

iron cruise ship

Let’s face it, irons are not particularly safe and you are on a cruise ship, the last place you want a fire to break out….It only takes one careless person to leave the iron on after all. But rules are changing, some cruise lines are changing the rules and allowing irons. Newer ships have automatic electric shutoffs in the cabins meaning irons could not be left on when no one was in the room. This could be the reason why things are changing…

Azamara do not allow travel irons onboard. But each floor has a self service laundry with irons and boards free of charge.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

Carnival States: For our guest’s safety we do not allows irons in staterooms. However each ship has at least 2 self-service launderettes located on the stateroom decks. There are two or three washers and dryers, and one iron and ironing board in each launderette.

CELEBRITY CRUISES

Celebrity States: Candles, Incense, Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons , Travel Steamers & Hot Plates. (Items that generate heat or produce an open flame. This includes heating pads, clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard.

COSTA CRUISES

Travel irons are NOT allowed on Costa Cruises.

Cunard States: Irons are available in our laundrettes. Please do not pack your own iron as this will not be permitted on board.

Disney States: Electric irons and Steamers are forbidden (all ships offer self-service laundry facilities equipped with irons and ironing boards)

Fred Olsen States:  Travel irons are not permitted on any of our cruise ships. All of our ships (with the exception of Borealis) have at least one fully equipped Laundry Room, complete with self service washing machines filled with with detergent and softener. Just collect a token from Guest Services (there is a small fee of £2 for this service) and pop it in the machine. Also in the Laundry Rooms are tumble driers, irons and ironing boards.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE

Travel irons are NOT allowed on Holland America.

MARELLA/TUI CRUISES

You may take a travel iron on the ship, however if the device is determined to pose a hazard they will be removed and returned on the last day of the cruise prior to disembarkation. There’s also a laundry service onboard the ships where you can pay for your clothes to be pressed on-demand. If you’ve chosen a cabin with premier service, you get a free pressing service for the formal night.

Travel irons are NOT allowed on MSC.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES

Norwegian States: Guests are not permitted to bring and use their own irons or steamers onboard. Norwegian Cruise Line carries a limited number of irons and ironing boards which can be loaned to guests for a few hours at a time. They can be requested through housekeeping or Guest Services Desk. Irons and steamers would both be taken from guests at embarkation and returned at the end of the sailing.

P&O CRUISES

P&O Do not allow travel irons onboard. But each floor has a self service laundry with irons and boards free of charge.

PRINCESS CRUISES

Princess Cruises: do not allow travel irons to be packed. However there are irons available in the onboard laundry rooms.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL

RCI States: Irons and clothes steamers are prohibited items and should not be brought with you on your vacation. RCI do offer a wash and press laundry service, but it can be quite expensive.

VIKING CRUISES

Travel irons are not allowed onboard. Irons are available in the complimentary self-service launderettes

VIRGIN VOYAGES

Clothing irons are a no go on board, but if you need to bring flat iron for your hair, that’s ok.

So in conclusion at the moment (current FEB 2022) the only cruise line that currently allows travel irons to come onboard is Marella/TUI. We actually took an iron onboard with us and guess what, we didn’t use it once! You may think you will need it but if you pack properly you can avoid it.

Can I Bring An Iron On A Cruise Ship?

Table of Contents

Going on a cruise vacation can be incredibly exciting, but it also involves meticulous planning and preparation. One common question that often arises is whether you can bring an iron on a cruise ship. After all, no one wants to be stuck with wrinkled clothes during their trip. In this article, we will explore the rules and regulations surrounding bringing an iron on board a cruise ship, ensuring that you are well-informed before setting sail.

Cruise Ship Policies on Irons

When it comes to packing for a cruise, it’s important to be aware of the policies and regulations in place regarding certain items. One such item that often raises questions is an iron. While it may seem like a simple item that you would want to bring along to keep your clothes looking crisp and wrinkle-free, many cruise ship policies restrict the use of irons in cabins. This is primarily due to safety concerns and the potential risk of fire on board.

Reasons Why Irons Are Restricted on Cruise Ships

Cruise ship policies on bringing irons stem from a number of reasons, with safety being paramount. The close-quarters nature of a cruise ship means that the risk of fire spreading quickly is higher compared to a normal hotel or home environment. Irons pose a fire hazard due to their high heat and the potential for them to be left unattended, accidentally causing a fire. Cruise ship companies prioritize the safety and well-being of their passengers and crew, and thus have implemented policies to minimize potential risks.

Alternatives to Bringing an Iron

While it may be disappointing to learn that you cannot bring an iron on a cruise ship, there are alternative options available to ensure your clothes remain wrinkle-free throughout your vacation. One popular alternative is to use wrinkle-release sprays. These sprays work by relaxing the fabric fibers and can be simply sprayed onto your clothing, followed by a gentle tug or smoothing with your hands to remove any wrinkles. Another option is to hang your clothes strategically in the bathroom while you take a hot shower, as the steam can help release wrinkles.

Tips for Packing Wrinkle-Free Clothes

To minimize the need for ironing or steaming while on a cruise, it’s important to pack your clothes with care. Here are a few tips to help you pack wrinkle-free clothes:

  • Choose fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling, such as knits, jerseys, or wrinkle-resistant materials.
  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them. This method helps to reduce wrinkles and can also save space in your suitcase.
  • Place tissue paper or plastic bags between layers of clothing to prevent them from rubbing against each other and creating wrinkles.
  • Utilize packing cubes or compression bags to organize and compact your clothing, minimizing the chances of wrinkles.

By following these packing tips, you can arrive on your cruise ship with clothes that are ready to wear without needing extensive ironing or steaming.

Laundry Services on Cruise Ships

If you find that your clothes have become wrinkled during your journey and you do not have access to an iron in your cabin, fear not – most cruise ships offer laundry services. These services typically include options for dry cleaning, pressing, and steaming, ensuring that you can have your clothes professionally treated to remove wrinkles and look their best. While there may be a fee associated with these services, the convenience and peace of mind they offer can be well worth it.

Ironing Facilities Available on Cruise Ships

Although bringing your own iron may not be allowed, many cruise ships offer public ironing facilities on board. These areas are designated for passenger use and provide self-service access to irons and ironing boards. These facilities are usually located in common areas, such as laundry rooms or designated ironing rooms. Here, you can bring your wrinkled clothing and iron them yourself, ensuring that you look polished and put-together for any formal events or dinners on board.

Options for Renting or Borrowing an Iron on a Cruise Ship

If you find that ironing facilities on the cruise ship are not easily accessible or if you prefer the convenience of having an iron in your cabin, there may be options available for renting or borrowing one. Some cruise ships offer rental services where you can request an iron for use in your own cabin. Alternatively, you can inquire at the guest services desk if they have any irons available for borrowing during your cruise. However, it’s important to note that availability may be limited, so it’s advisable to inquire and make arrangements in advance if possible.

Portable Steamers as an Alternative to Irons

Another alternative to irons on cruise ships is the use of portable steamers. Portable steamers are compact, easy to use, and can effectively remove wrinkles from clothing. They work by emitting a gentle flow of steam, which helps relax the fabric fibers and release any wrinkles. Portable steamers are generally allowed on cruise ships, as long as they meet the safety requirements specified by the cruise line. They can be a convenient and effective solution for keeping your clothes looking neat and wrinkle-free during your cruise.

Common Items Allowed on Cruise Ships

While irons may be restricted on cruise ships, there are many other common items that are generally allowed and can enhance your cruising experience. Some examples of items you can bring include:

  • Clothing and personal belongings
  • Toiletries and personal care items (within liquid restrictions)
  • Electronics and chargers
  • Books, magazines, and entertainment devices
  • Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages (check specific policies regarding alcohol)
  • Beach towels and swimwear
  • Travel adapters and power strips (check specific policies regarding electrical items)

Always be sure to check the specific policies of your chosen cruise line before packing to ensure compliance and avoid any unnecessary hassles or confiscation of restricted items.

Tips for Smooth Sailing on a Cruise Ship

Beyond the ironing question, there are a few additional tips to help ensure a smooth sailing experience on a cruise ship:

  • Familiarize yourself with the ship’s policies and regulations before departure to avoid any surprises.
  • Pack essentials such as medications, travel documents, and a change of clothes in your carry-on, in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Take advantage of the various dining options on board to savor a wide range of cuisines and flavors.
  • Participate in onboard activities and entertainment to make the most of your experience at sea.
  • Stay hydrated and prioritize self-care to ensure you feel your best during your cruise vacation.

By following these tips, you can maximize your enjoyment and relaxation while cruising the open waters, regardless of the ironing restrictions in place. Bon voyage!

Can You Bring Curling Irons on a Cruise Ship? Detailed Information

Introduction:.

When it comes to accessorizing your look on a cruise vacation, the burning question often arises: Can you bring your trusty curling iron aboard? Let’s dive into the specifics and uncover what different cruise lines allow and recommend regarding these hair grooming essentials.

Are Curling Irons Permitted on Cruise Ships?

Can You Bring Curling Irons on a Cruise Ship?

Curling irons, often considered a vital part of grooming, are among the few exceptions to the ban on heat-producing devices on most cruise lines. Major cruise companies like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and others explicitly permit these items on board.

In-Depth Exploration of Cruise Lines’ Policies

Each major cruise liner, including Carnival Cruise, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and more, has a clear stance on curling irons. Carnival, for instance, lists specific guidelines on their exceptions list, emphasizing the importance of cautious usage.

Packaging and Safety Considerations:

Ensuring the safe transport of curling irons is crucial. Guidelines advise waiting until these devices cool down before packing and using designated cases for added safety, especially for butane cordless irons.

Curling Irons and Air Travel:

For travelers flying to embark on their cruise, regulations regarding carrying curling irons differ. Electric and battery-powered ones are allowed in carry-on bags, while butane-powered irons pose restrictions, notably limiting the number of gas-powered items in checked baggage.

Will Your Curling Irons Work on a Cruise Ship?

Most cruise ships offer 110-volt outlets in staterooms, compatible with curling irons commonly used in the United States. However, occasional issues with power supply or outlet conditions might affect their functionality.

Choosing the Right Curling Iron for Your Cruise:

Considerations for cruise-friendly curling irons include those with auto shut-off features for safety, lower wattage options for consistent performance, or compact travel-sized ones for convenience.

Safety Reminders and Alternatives

Safety precautions, such as turning off curling irons when not in use, are emphasized to prevent hazards. Alternatives to curling irons, ranging from using different hair tools to creative techniques like braiding or twisting, offer solutions if these gadgets are forgotten or malfunction.

Additional Tips for Hair Care on a Cruise

Practical tips, from carrying extension cords or multi-plug adapters to choosing suitable hair products and allocating extra time for styling, contribute to a hassle-free hair care routine while cruising.

In summary, cruise lines generally permit passengers to bring curling irons, recognizing their importance as grooming accessories while outlining safety measures and alternatives.

Bringing Your Curling Iron or Hair Straightener on a Cruise – What To Know

Can you bring a curling iron or hair straightener on a cruise.

Packing for a cruise trip can be a daunting task. Each cruise line has an exhaustive list of prohibited items, including heating devices like hair straighteners, curling irons, and hair rollers.

On a recent cruise, while watching my best friend unpack her numerous suitcases… I noticed what seemed like endless “appliances”. So I asked my bestie why she brought her Hair Straightener and Curling Iron on a Cruise – among other things. (as a man, I really never understand some of the things my female friends bring with them!) 🙂

I was lectured, as if I was completely out of touch with beautification, on how women suffer from frizzy and dry hair on a cruise ship. It’s due to the higher humidity levels, salty air, strong winds, and generally crappy hair products included in the cruise cabins. Hence, carrying hair care equipment, including a flat or curling iron, is necessary. Who knew ?!

Apart from this, she went on (at great length) about all the reasons she never leaves home without these tools:

  • Always wants to look best in photos and videos (who doesn’t want this, right?)
  • Hairstyles for special events, parties, and dinners
  • Salons onboard are expensive with limited appointments
  • For her and other people, hair styling is part of a daily routine, making a flat or curling iron essential (I’ll stick with my short hair, thank you!)

Consider me schooled on this topic for sure.

The question of whether curling irons and hair flat irons/straighteners are even allowed on a cruise comes up all of the time on Facebook and Reddit – so we’re going to go over the policies on electrical hair devices per cruise line.

Which Cruise lines allow Hair Straighteners or Curling Irons?

Cruise lines prohibit passengers from carrying electronic items with heating elements like steam irons, water heaters, clothes steamers, hair dryers, etc. However, most cruise lines have exceptions for hair styling tools like flat and curling irons.

However, each cruise line may have unique rules (and these rules can change!).

Remember, improper use can result in the crew confiscating them for fire hazards or safety reasons. Here’s a list of the most popular cruise line policies for hair straighteners and curling irons.

  • Read : Our Essential Cruise Packing Guide

Norwegian Cruise Line

You might be shocked to see plenty of electronic items with heating elements on Norwegian Cruise Line’s prohibited list. However, the cruise line allows carrying hair straighteners and curling irons onboard. You must use the curling iron with care and proper caution. If not, the security team has the right to confiscate and return it on the last day of the cruise. If you leave one of these plugged in, the cabin steward will likely unplug it (and may remove it)

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line prohibits all types of items that generate heat or produce an open flame, like candles, travel steamers, coffee makers, and more. However, the only exceptions to this rule are hair straighteners and curling irons. You can easily carry your flat and curling iron on a Royal Caribbean cruise without any second thoughts.

Carnival Cruise Line

Like NCL, Carnival Cruise also allows you to carry hair straighteners and curling irons. However, the crew can confiscate them if they pose a security hazard.

Can you Bring a Curling Iron or flat iron on an MSC Cruise?

MSC Cruise Line’s policy about curling irons and straighteners is so incredibly inconsistent across their various websites, that it’s really impossible to know what they allow. So they officially say in their FAQ that you cannot bring hair irons. (see here) . The cruise line strictly prohibits carrying heat-generating devices onboard with hair straighteners and curlers being the only two exceptions on SOME of their websites. For instance, their European websites specifically state that it is ok to bring these items, whereas the USA site prohibits it.

You might see information out in the world about MSC prohibiting hair straighteners. So the official rule is stated on their USA website – but practically speaking, I’ve never heard of anyone having one of these items confiscated. Just know it’s POSSIBLE that they may disallow a hair iron or straightener and confiscate it until the end of the cruise.

Princess Cruises

The Princess Cruise official website, prohibited items list, and FAQ section; however, I found no concrete information. I’ll update this after contacting Princess directly.

So before embarking on a Princess cruise, I recommend contacting their customer support and checking beforehand. Some people report having hair straighteners confiscated at check-in.

Does Holland America allow carrying a Flat Iron onboard?

Similar to Oceania Cruises, Holland America cruise line doesn’t allow passengers to carry a flat iron onboard however a regular curling iron is ok. (not intuitive) An older forum post also states that a passenger’s hair straightener was confiscated during the security check and kept till the end of the cruise.

Flat Irons are prohibited on Oceana Cruises

One of the few cruise lines that specifically call out Flat Irons as being prohibited is Oceana. Expect to have it confiscated. However, they make no mention of a simple curling iron.

Viking Cruises?

The Viking Cruise prohibited items list clearly states that electronic items that produce heat aren’t allowed onboard, including heating pads. However, there is an exception for curling irons. So carrying a curling iron or flat iron isn’t a problem on Viking.

Disney Cruise Line

You can carry a hair straightener and curling iron onboard a Disney cruise. However, you must place your flat iron on the small heat-resistant mat provided in each stateroom. If the crew finds the use of such items in a hazardous way, it reserves the right to seize them.

Does Celebrity Cruises allow Curling Irons?

Celebrity Cruises prohibited items list explicitly states that items that generate heat or produce an open flame aren’t permitted on the ship. The only exceptions to this rule are curling irons and hair dryers.

Can you carry Flat Iron on a Cunard Cruise?

Like most cruise lines, Cunard also prohibits passengers from carrying electronic appliances with heating elements, including board irons and kettles. Only hair straighteners and curling irons are exceptions to this rule. Hence, you can easily carry a flat or curling iron on a Curnard Cruise ship.

Virgin Voyages

The FAQ section of Virgin Voyages states that a passenger can bring a flat iron onboard.

Introduction

Going on a cruise is an exciting and enjoyable experience. It offers the opportunity to explore new destinations, relax on board a luxurious ship, and indulge in various activities and entertainment. However, when it comes to packing for your cruise, one important consideration is how to keep your clothes looking their best throughout your voyage.

Wrinkled clothes can be a source of frustration and can diminish your overall appearance and confidence. Many travelers wonder if they can bring an iron on board a cruise ship, or if there are alternative methods to keep their clothing wrinkle-free. In this article, we will explore the options available for ironing clothes on a cruise and provide you with useful tips and insights.

Packing efficiently for a cruise is essential to make the most of your available luggage space. You want to ensure that you bring all the necessary clothing items without overpacking. However, it’s important to strike a balance between practicality and having outfits that are presentable and wrinkle-free.

Understanding the ironing policies of cruise ships is crucial to avoid any complications or misunderstandings during your trip. Each cruise line may have its own set of guidelines and restrictions when it comes to bringing irons on board. Some ships strictly prohibit irons, while others allow them under certain conditions.

In the following sections, we will discuss how to choose the right clothing for your cruise, explore the ironing policies of cruise ships in more detail, and provide alternative methods to ironing. Additionally, we’ll share some valuable ironing tips specifically tailored for cruise travelers. By the end of this article, you’ll be well-equipped with the knowledge to keep your clothes looking fabulous throughout your cruise vacation.

Packing for a Cruise

When packing for a cruise, it’s important to consider the duration of your trip, the destinations you’ll be visiting, and the activities you plan to participate in. Most cruises have varying dress codes for different occasions, so it’s essential to pack a mix of casual, formal, and resort wear to cover all bases.

Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently for a cruise:

  • Make a packing list: Start by creating a checklist of the essentials you’ll need, including clothing, toiletries, and any specific items required for the activities you plan to participate in.
  • Plan outfits in advance: Try to plan your outfits ahead of time to avoid overpacking. Mix and match pieces to create different looks with fewer items of clothing.
  • Consider the climate: Research the weather conditions in the destinations you’ll be visiting and pack appropriate clothing. Remember to include items like swimwear, sunscreen, and hats for sunny destinations, or jackets and layers for colder climates.
  • Don’t forget formalwear: Many cruises have formal nights or special events that require elegant attire. Make sure to pack a few formal outfits, including dresses, suits, or tuxedos, depending on the dress code specified by your cruise line.
  • Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics: Opt for clothing made from wrinkle-resistant materials, such as polyester blends or lightweight knits. These fabrics are less likely to wrinkle, allowing you to pack more efficiently and reducing the need for ironing.
  • Utilize space-saving techniques: To maximize luggage space, roll your clothes instead of folding them. This technique helps to minimize wrinkles and allows you to fit more items into your suitcase.
  • Invest in travel-sized wrinkle-release spray: To quickly freshen up your clothes and reduce wrinkles, consider packing a travel-sized wrinkle-release spray. This convenient product can be used on garments without the need for ironing.

By following these packing tips, you can ensure that you have all the necessary clothing items for your cruise while minimizing the risk of wrinkling. With a well-planned packing strategy, you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation without the stress of having to deal with excessively wrinkled clothes.

Choosing the Right Clothing

When it comes to selecting clothing for your cruise, it’s important to consider both style and practicality. The key is to choose garments that are comfortable, versatile, and appropriate for the different activities you’ll be engaging in on board and at your cruise destinations.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right clothing for your cruise:

  • Research the dress code: Before packing, familiarize yourself with the dress code guidelines of the cruise line you’ll be sailing with. Some ships may have strict dress codes for certain areas or events, so it’s important to pack accordingly. This may include casual wear, evening wear, and even themed nights.
  • Pack lightweight and breathable fabrics: Cruise ships can get quite warm, especially in tropical destinations. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, and chambray, which allow air circulation and help keep you cool.
  • Include versatile pieces: To maximize your outfit options with minimal packing, choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Pack items like neutral-colored pants, skirts, or shorts that can be paired with different tops to create multiple outfits.
  • Bring comfortable shoes: Ensure you have a variety of comfortable shoes for different activities. Pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals for pool days, sneakers for excursions, and dress shoes for formal events.
  • Consider the activities: Think about the activities you’ll be participating in during your cruise. If you plan to engage in active excursions or sports, pack appropriate athletic wear. For formal evenings or special events, bring elegant outfits.
  • Don’t forget swimwear: A cruise vacation is incomplete without spending some time by the pool or at the beach. Don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuits and cover-ups for those relaxing moments in the sun.

Remember to also pack accessories like hats, sunglasses, and scarves to protect yourself from the sun. By choosing the right clothing for your cruise, you’ll not only feel comfortable and stylish but also be well-prepared for all the activities and events that await you on board and at your destinations.

Understanding Cruise Ship Ironing Policies

Each cruise line has its own set of policies and restrictions when it comes to bringing irons on board. These policies are implemented for safety reasons, as irons can pose a fire hazard if not used correctly or left unattended.

While some cruise lines strictly prohibit passengers from bringing irons on board, others may have designated ironing areas or provide laundry facilities for guests to use. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the specific policies of your cruise line before packing your iron.

Here are some common ironing policies you may come across:

  • No irons allowed: Many cruise lines have a strict no-iron policy due to safety concerns. This means that bringing an iron on board is not permitted, and if discovered during security checks, it will be confiscated.
  • Designated ironing areas: Some cruise ships have designated ironing areas where passengers can safely use irons. These areas are equipped with ironing boards and are often located in communal spaces like laundry rooms.
  • Laundry services: Most cruise ships offer laundry services for guests at an additional cost. These services usually include washing, drying, and even ironing. Check with your cruise line to see if this option is available and if there are any restrictions or fees associated with it.
  • Wrinkle-release services: In lieu of ironing, many cruise ships provide wrinkle-release services. These services use steam or specialized equipment to remove wrinkles from clothing without the need for traditional ironing. This can be a convenient alternative for keeping your clothes looking neat and presentable throughout your cruise.

It’s important to note that even if your cruise line allows irons to be brought on board or provides ironing facilities, it’s still crucial to exercise caution when using them. Always follow the safety guidelines provided, such as never leaving the iron unattended and ensuring it is unplugged when not in use.

By understanding and respecting the ironing policies of your cruise line, you can avoid any unnecessary complications or safety issues. Whether you use alternative methods or take advantage of the services provided on board, you can still keep your clothes looking crisp and wrinkle-free throughout your cruise.

Alternative Methods to Ironing

If the cruise ship you’re traveling on prohibits irons or you simply prefer not to bring one with you, there are alternative methods to keep your clothes looking wrinkle-free. These methods are convenient, easy to use, and require minimal effort. Here are some alternative methods to ironing:

  • Wrinkle-release sprays: Wrinkle-release sprays are a fantastic alternative to traditional ironing. These sprays work by relaxing the fabric fibers, allowing wrinkles to smooth out. Simply hang the garment, spray the wrinkled areas, and gently smooth the fabric with your hands. Allow the garment to dry, and it will regain its smooth appearance. Travel-sized wrinkle-release sprays are available for easy packing.
  • Steamers: Portable garment steamers are lightweight and compact devices that are ideal for travel. They work by producing steam, which helps to remove wrinkles from clothing. Hang your garment and run the steamer over the fabric, allowing the steam to penetrate and relax the wrinkles. This method is quick and effective for eliminating creases and revitalizing clothing.
  • Hot shower method: This method is perfect for removing minor wrinkles. Hang your wrinkled garment in the bathroom while taking a hot shower. The steam generated by the shower helps to moisten the fabric and release the wrinkles. Afterward, shake the garment gently and hang it to dry, and it will regain its smoothness.
  • Pressing between towels: For stubborn wrinkles, you can try the towel press method. Dampen a towel and lay it flat on a hard surface. Place your garment on top of the damp towel, smoothing out any wrinkles. Then, cover the garment with another damp towel. Use your hands to press down firmly and glide them gently over the fabric. The combination of heat and moisture will help to release the wrinkles.
  • Hanging techniques: Utilize clever hanging techniques to minimize wrinkles in your clothing. Pack clothes that are less prone to wrinkling and hang them up immediately upon arrival in your cabin. Smooth out any visible wrinkles with your hands and allow the garments to air out and naturally release their wrinkles.

By utilizing these alternative methods to ironing, you can maintain wrinkle-free clothing without the need for an iron. They are convenient options that can be easily incorporated into your cruise travel routine, ensuring that you always look polished and put together throughout your voyage.

Ironing Tips for Cruise Travelers

While it is best to avoid ironing when possible due to safety restrictions and the availability of alternative methods, there might be instances where you still need to iron your clothes on a cruise. Here are some ironing tips to help you achieve wrinkle-free garments:

  • Check ship’s ironing facilities: If your cruise ship provides ironing areas, check the availability and schedule your ironing tasks accordingly. Be mindful of peak times when these areas may be more crowded.
  • Use the shower & clothesline method: For small items like shirts or blouses, hang them in the bathroom while showering and let the steam from the hot water reduce wrinkles. Afterward, stretch out the garment and hang it to dry on a clothesline.
  • Iron in a well-ventilated area: If you are allowed to use your own iron, ensure that you iron in a well-ventilated area with proper airflow. Avoid using the iron on wooden surfaces or near flammable materials.
  • Place a towel or cloth underneath: To protect delicate fabrics from direct heat, place a clean towel or cloth between the iron and your garment. This helps to distribute the heat more evenly and prevents damage.
  • Adjust iron temperature: Set your iron to the appropriate temperature for the fabric you are ironing. Follow the garment’s care instructions to avoid scorching or melting the fabric.
  • Iron inside out: For dark-colored or delicate garments, ironing them inside out can help prevent shiny patches or damage to the fabric. Ironing on the reverse side protects the outer surface of the clothing.
  • Use a pressing cloth: If you need to iron delicate or embellished fabrics, place a pressing cloth, such as a clean cotton cloth or a thin towel, on top of the garment. This acts as a barrier to protect the fabric from direct heat.
  • Iron in small sections: Work on small sections of the garment at a time, applying gentle pressure and gliding the iron smoothly. Avoid pushing or pulling too hard, as this can stretch or distort the fabric.
  • Hang clothes after ironing: Hang your freshly ironed garments immediately to avoid wrinkles from forming again. Use padded hangers for delicate clothing items to maintain their shape.

Remember to exercise caution and attentiveness while ironing, and never leave the iron unattended. Always unplug the iron and allow it to cool down before storing it away.

By following these ironing tips, you can effectively smooth out wrinkles in your clothing, should the need arise on your cruise. However, it’s always advisable to plan and pack your clothes in a way that minimizes the need for ironing, utilizing the alternative methods mentioned earlier whenever possible.

Packing and maintaining wrinkle-free clothing on a cruise can be easily achieved with the right strategies and knowledge. While bringing an iron on board may not always be an option, there are alternative methods that can keep your clothes looking fresh and polished throughout your voyage.

By carefully planning your wardrobe and choosing the right fabrics, you can minimize wrinkles and packing volume. Take advantage of travel-sized wrinkle-release sprays or invest in a portable steamer to easily remove wrinkles on the go. Additionally, utilizing clever hanging techniques and taking advantage of the ironing facilities provided by your cruise ship, when available, can also help maintain wrinkle-free clothing.

Understanding and respecting the ironing policies of your cruise line is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Always prioritize safety and be mindful of the guidelines in place. If you do choose to iron, follow best practices such as using the appropriate temperature, protecting delicate fabrics, and ironing in well-ventilated areas.

Ultimately, incorporating these tips and alternatives into your cruise packing and ironing routine will help you look your best and feel confident throughout your vacation. Whether you’re exploring exotic destinations or enjoying the onboard amenities, your wrinkle-free clothing will contribute to a more enjoyable and stress-free cruise experience.

So, embark on your cruise adventure with the knowledge and confidence to keep your clothes looking impeccable, no matter where your voyage takes you!

How To Get Wrinkles Out Of Clothes On A Cruise (So Clever!)

iron cruise ship

There’s nothing quite as exciting as planning a holiday. It’s a time when you’re getting ready to relax, unwind, and get some much-needed R&R!

And, if you’re going on a cruise, you know that you’ll really be getting the rest that you deserve.

The only problem is that when you go on a cruise, you’re also in a situation where it’s harder to keep your clothes clean and well-pressed. So, when your clothes get all wrinkly, what do you do!?

To get wrinkles out of your clothes on a cruise, you can use a hair straightener, shower steam, or even in-room supplies. Let’s take a closer look at these methods!

Wait… Why Can’t You Bring an Iron on a Cruise?

Person Holding An Iron

When you’re packing for a cruise, your first thoughts are probably on your sunscreen, bathing suit , and sunglasses.

And, while those are all key items, you’ve also got to think about what items you’ll bring to keep your clothes in good condition! After all, you’ll be snapping some Insta-worthy photos.

Well, you might be thinking, I’ll just pack my iron and use it in the room!

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to load an iron onboard a ship. That’s because irons can actually be fire hazards, especially in confined ship cabins.

Many cruise companies, such as Royal Caribbean, for example, actually explicitly state that irons and steamers are NOT allowed onboard the ship.

They’re well aware that these could be safety hazards, and so exclude them entirely from guest luggage. Plus, in many cases, these go against local and international Maritime Regulations.

Alternatives to Using an Iron on a Cruise

No Iron On Luggage Concept

Although many times you can find people online who tell you that you can camouflage, or hide some prohibited item in your luggage, we wouldn’t recommend it.

If you do, you could put yourself or others at risk of danger just by bringing those items on board with you.

So how do you get wrinkles out of your clothes while on the cruise without your trusty iron?

Well, for one thing, all cruises provide laundry services. These services include (you guessed it!) ironing so that your clothes come back to you pressed and ready to wear.

Typically, the services cruise lines offer to guests include:

  • Dry cleaning

The services are usually pretty affordable, too, and are priced by the bag. You can fit all your clothes into the bag in one go so that you can save a few pennies down the line!

Wrinkled Outfit Needs Ironing

But, if you don’t want to use the laundry service, there are a few other methods you can use. Let’s take a look at a couple of them…

Shower Steam

Did you know that the steam from the shower can actually help?

That’s right! You can hang your garment in the shower, in a place where it doesn’t get wet.

Then, let the hot water run for a couple of minutes. This way, you can reduce significant wrinkles.

Anti-Wrinkle Spray

This product is easily found in your local supermarket. With this simple item, all you have to do is spray your clothes.

And, if you want to really take things to the next level?

Use the cruise ship’s in-room hairdryer to go over the item to get the last of the wrinkles out!

Hair Straightener

Interestingly enough, this item is allowed on most cruise ships.

With a straightening iron, you can leave your clothes without so many wrinkles and you won’t have to worry about breaking any cruise ship rules.

Tips for Keeping Wrinkles Out of Your Clothes

Now that you have a good idea of how to get wrinkles out of your clothes, let’s talk about how to keep them that way .

There are a couple of things you can do to keep wrinkles from even getting into your clothes in the first place!

  • Choose clothes with fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling. I love bamboo fabric combined with spandex for this purpose.
  • Iron the clothes before packing them.
  • Instead of folding the clothes, roll them up.
  • Pack in a hardback suitcase. This will make sure that nothing you put on top will help wrinkle what’s inside.
  • Store clothes in separate packages.
  • Place the garment in a position that allows it to straighten, and sleep on it. Possibly, with body heat, you can get rid of some wrinkles.

By keeping these tips in mind, you shouldn’t have any trouble keeping wrinkles out of your clothing.

That way, you won’t have to worry about ironing them at all!

You can also try changing the laundry products you use. For instance, switching to an ecological soap could be a great way to keep your clothes wrinkle-free.

Keep Your Clothes Free From Wrinkles

Happy Family Travelling On A Cruise

With these tips and tricks, you shouldn’t have any problem keeping your clothing free from wrinkles.

With a little bit of quick thinking, it’s easy to iron your clothes onboard a cruise ship. So, now that everything is clear, what are you waiting for? It’s time to embark on a cruise and enjoy a getaway.

Can You Bring Curling Irons On a Cruise Ship?

Do you want to curl your hair while on your cruise vacation but are unsure if you can take your curling irons or an alternative?

As you may be aware, many items produce heat that are forbidden to be taken on board cruise ships, such as coffee makers, hot plates, and clothes steamers .

However, the exception to this rule across all the main cruise lines is hair grooming products such as curling irons or curling tongs as they are sometimes referred to.

Can You Take Curling Irons on a Cruise

Curling irons are allowed on all main cruise lines and are often mentioned directly in the prohibited items lists as an exception.

This includes both electric and cordless butane curling irons.

I’m fairly sure if curling irons were banned, the cruise lines would lose some customers to land-based vacations. They are a cruise essential item for many passengers who like to look their curly best.

Can I Bring a Curling Iron in My Carry-on?

You can bring your curling iron in your carry-on bags.  This applies both to for embarking on your cruise and also on a plane if you have to take a flight to the port.

Can I Take Curling Irons On in Checked Luggage?

How to Pack Your Curling Irons for Your Cruise

Make sure you wait until your curling tongs are cool before packing them.

When you do pack them make sure there is no way for them to be accidentally activated.  Ideally, pack them in a designated curling iron case.

If you have Butane cordless irons, place a safety cover over the heating elements.

You should find a space in your main suitcase to pack your curling irons.  If you have a lot of hair products, you may

Butane curling irons are not allowed in checked luggage but can be packed in your carry-on bags ( TSA ). Although note you are only allowed one gas-powered item in your suitcase, so if you have any other gas-powered accessories, you will have to leave them at home or ask a traveling companion if they will take them for you.

You are not allowed to take spare gas cartridges onto the plane.

Will Your Curling Irons Work on a Cruise?

You may wonder if your curling irons will even work once you are on the cruise ship. The good news is that most cruise ships have 110-volt outlets in the staterooms, which are the same voltage as what is used in the United States.

This means you will be able to use your curling irons without needing a voltage converter.

However, some passengers have reported that at times their curling irons have not worked on some trips and then work fine when back home, although it’s not clear why this is if most others have.

It could be the outlet. Sometimes they are quite old and don’t hold the plug tightly enough.  If possible, try to prop up the plug and see if that helps.

Sometimes the outlets on a cruise simply don’t give enough power to heat the curling irons enough. Although this isn’t a common experience, it does happen for some.

Best Curling Irons for a Cruise

The best curling irons for a cruise ship should have an auto shut-off feature that automatically switches them off after a set amount of time if ever left on.

Although not a common occurrence, some people do have issues with their curling irons not heating up as much, and this could be more likely with higher wattage curling irons. Some passengers take low-wattage ones and find they work better.

You may want to consider a travel curling iron that is smaller and more compact.  These can be good if you have limited space in your luggage.  There are also some combo curling and straighteners on the market if you’d normally take both.

Will Your Curling Irons Get Confiscated?

Your curling irons will not be confiscated from your luggage as they are allowed on all the main cruise lines.

There have been reports of curling irons being confiscated if they have been left on in a room which is a fire hazard.

So, if you are using your curling irons in your room, turn them off before you leave the room, and don’t leave them plugged in.

Do Cruise Lines Provide Curling Irons?

Cruise lines do not provide curling irons to passengers on any of the main cruise lines.

We checked with Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Princess Cruises, and they do not provide them in any form.

What if you Forget Your Curling Irons?

If you forget your curling irons and want to curl your hair while on your cruise, a few alternative options are available.

You could try purchasing curling irons on board the ship’s shops, although we’ve never seen them for sale as of yet. If you have, please let us know on which ship.

If the ship is docked in a port, you may be able to pop out and buy some. Depending on where you are traveling, make sure they will work with the stateroom outlets.  However, this isn’t ideal as you will waste time on your trip.

Curling Hair Without Curlers?

If you forget your curling irons or they don’t work for whatever reason, there are plenty of other ways you can curl your hair, so don’t despair.

Firstly you could check Youtube for lots of variations on ways to curl hair, including if you have them using hair straighteners or flat irons. I was going to post one, but there were way too many to choose from.

Other methods include braiding, twisting, tying socks in hair to sleep in (daughters use this one), rollers, and many more.

As a last resort, you could make friends with curly-haired passengers and ask if you could borrow their curling tongs 🙂

Always Turn Your Curling Irons Off

In the interests of safety, always remember to turn your curling irons off.  If you leave them on, it would be a potential safety hazard for the entire ship and anyone in the room that might accidentally come into contact with in the stateroom, which is more likely given the typically smaller living quarters than when back home.  This is especially important if young children are around.

Tips for Using Your Curling Irons on a Cruise Ship

Extension Cord: Consider taking an powerstrip (extension cord) or multi-plug adapter (if allowed).   You won’t know until you get to your stateroom how close they are to where you want to curl your hair.  You may also be limited to one outlet and have other guests in your room wanting to use it a the same time.

Travel Mirror: It can always be handy to have an extra travel mirror just in case of any issues in reaching the cabin mirror or competing for space with other guests in your room.

Hair Spray: Make sure you take your favorite hair spray with you as you might not be able to find the same brands on board, and some heat protectant sprays can be important for the health and look of your hair.

Curling Cream or Mousse: Depending on the style you want to achieve, you might want to take some curling cream or mousse with you, as these can help give your hair extra hold.

Hair Clips: These can be helpful to section off your hair while curling

Allow Extra Time: If you have long hair, it might take longer to curl on board than at home due to possible lower power, so be prepared and give yourself plenty of time.

Diffuser: If you have room in your packing and a hair dryer , consider taking a diffuser.  This will help to lessen the frizz and keep your curls intact.

Require cruise ships to plug into shore power while docked in Seattle

Reducing a cruise ship’s greenhouse gas emissions is a herculean undertaking, among the toughest nuts to crack in the quest for a decarbonized economy. With this in mind, the Port of Seattle invested tens of millions of dollars to install cables, conduit and other infrastructure at its piers so these gargantuan ships can run on shoreside electricity rather than their gas-and-particulate-belching engines.

As the 2024 cruise season begins Saturday, it’s time for the port to require cruise ships to plug in on Seattle’s waterfront. So far not all have made that commitment.

The world’s biggest cruise lines have agreed to ambitious climate goals within the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization, advocating for carbon neutrality by 2050. Getting there will be a daunting task. Converting cruise ships to hybrid or electric power is not possible “because the battery would be bigger than the ship,” points out Robert Morgenstern, senior vice president for Holland America and Princess Cruises’ Alaska operations. The industry is focused on finding a source of green power but it’s likely still years from being ready for use.

“The fuels of the future will take time, but shore power is here now,” Morgenstern said.

The Port of Seattle has made that power possible at both Pier 91 and Pier 66, spending $44 million at the latter to do so.

Disappointingly, cruise ships plugged in at Seattle piers only about one-third of the time in 2023. That percentage should rise dramatically. The port’s commissioners should have a simple rule: cruise ships that won’t plug in can’t dock here.

Holland America and Princess Cruises have been using shoreside power in Seattle since 2005. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have not.

Morgenstern notes it actually costs the lines more money to plug in than to run their engines in port. But the commitment is to the environment and neighboring residents, he said.

Norwegian, meanwhile, has prime parking at Pier 66, sandwiched between Seattle’s Great Wheel to the south and the Olympic Sculpture Park to the north. The company’s ship, the Norwegian Bliss, will make its first cruise to Alaska on Saturday.

While the ship was away, the port in January laid a mile-long cable along the Elliott Bay seafloor — the most viable way port staff felt they could bring power to the pier. The cable will connect a substation at Terminal 46 south of Colman Dock with the Bliss’ Pier 66, which Norwegian has leased through 2030. By July, the port expects to have installed a large transformer that will make shore power possible there for the first time.

The port and the company are currently negotiating Norwegian’s contribution to the project — a welcome gesture given previous years of emitting carbon and sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide and other harmful particulate matter on Seattle’s waterfront.

Once the electricity is flowing in July, Norwegian should hook up the Bliss to shore power at the soonest possible moment, fulfilling promises that David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, said of his company’s desire to decarbonize. It’s “not lip service,” he said at a recent Seattle conference of the Cruise Lines International Association, a trade group, adding of his own children in an era of climate change: “I want them to enjoy what I enjoy.”

A shore-powered Bliss is a start. The company estimates it will save 18 metric tons of traditional marine fuel from burning each year, while reducing 57 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per season.

The Port of Seattle’s current goal is a 100% connection rate between ships and electricity by 2030. Its commissioners should require ships to plug into shore power now or document their plans to convert their ships so they can plug in.
