JBL Tour Pro+ review: Another excellent AirPods Pro alternative

Simon Cohen

“With tons of features and great sound, the Tour Pro+ are easy to recommend.”
  • Elegant design
  • Very good sound quality
  • Excellent call quality
  • Good battery life
  • Hands-free voice assistants
  • Awkward controls
  • Mediocre noise canceling
  • No wake-word support in iOS

Looking for a set of noise-canceling true wireless earbuds that don’t look like small golf tees protruding from your ears? JBL’s $200 Tour Pro+ are your latest option. They’re slickly designed, compact, and they let you speak to Alexa or Google Assistant without needing to tap an earbud — a trick that even Apple’s AirPods can’t manage.

  • What’s in the box?

Comfort, controls, and connections

Sound quality, battery life, noise cancellation and transparency, voice assistant access, call quality.

But do the rest of the Tour Pro+’s features measure up, and should you add them to your shortlist? Let’s find out.

  • Cambridge Audio’s first AirPods Pro competitor has lossless audio, massive battery life

What’s in the box?

JBL’s soundbar team has definitely read the sustainable packaging memo — the new JBL Bar 5.0 Multibeam is a perfect example of how to make a box and its contents fully recyclable. But apparently, the earbuds team missed that email. The Tour Pro+ come in a heavily coated box with magnet closures and lots of hard-to-recycle foam and plastic.

Inside, you’ll find the earbuds, their charging case, a USB-C charging cord, five sizes of eartips, two sizes of wing tips, and several printed quick start guides.

JBL’s Tour lineup, which consists of the Tour Pro+ earbuds and the Tour One ANC headphones, possesses an understated yet sophisticated design. Satin-finish plastics, subtle logos, and just a few high-polish accents give the Tour Pro+ a very high-end vibe.

The earbuds use touch-sensitive surfaces, so there is very little to interrupt their clean lines. Size-wise, they’re similar to Jabra’s Elite 75t , sticking out from your ear just enough to make them easy to insert and remove. An IPX5 rating offers very good protection from sweat and water (just don’t immerse them).

Their charging case, which can be charged wirelessly or via the included USB-C cable, isn’t quite as compact as the AirPods Pro, but it’s still highly pocketable. The lid opens and closes smoothly and the hinge keeps the lid open until you’re ready to close it — something many cases can’t claim. The case can stand vertically if you’re careful, but it’s really meant to lie flat on its back, which lets it charge wirelessly while also exposing the charging status LED on the bottom, next to the USB-C port.

The Tour Pro+ snap in and out of their charging sockets with ease thanks to their slightly angled position, but take care when re-docking them: They can sometimes fail to align perfectly with their charging contacts. Each socket has its own LED indicator so it’s easy to tell if something’s not quite right.

I found that the default medium cone-style silicone ear tips were perfect for me. Once nestled in my ear, the Tour Pro+ were very comfortable and secure. Going for a jog or pavement or pounding away on a treadmill shouldn’t budge them at all.

The Tour Pro+ come with a tiny set of wing tips installed, though that term seems inappropriate. They’re really more like mini-fins. But regardless of what you call them, they didn’t do much for me in terms of extra stability. I think they’re designed to fit just under the antihelix — that fold of cartilage in the outer ear — but I guess my antihelixes are too big (weirdest brag ever). If they actively get in the way or they’re uncomfortable, you can swap them out with flat silicone bands.

Bass response is excellent without being overbearing, and there’s plenty of detail through the midrange.

Inside the JBL Headphones app, which you will definitely want to download to get the best from the Tour Pro+, there’s a fit test that helps you figure out if you’re using the best ear tips for your ears. It’s worth doing: A poor fit will compromise both the active noise cancellation (ANC) and sound quality.

Though I still prefer physical buttons, the Tour Pro+ has very responsive touch controls, which provide audible feedback tones when you tap them. I wish all touch controls did this — there’s nothing worse than not knowing if your tap was recognized or not.

Unfortunately, JBL has somewhat kneecapped these great touch controls by enforcing a very limited set of customizations. Instead of letting users assign one function per gesture per earbud, each earbud must be assigned a function “group.” The playback control group gives you play/pause and track skip forward/back. The volume control group lets you turn the volume up or down. Voice assistant lets you trigger your chosen assistant with a gesture (more on this later), and ambient sound control lets you switch from ANC modes and toggle TalkThru on and off.

The ambient sound control group might be the most confusing of them all. With a single tap, you can switch between ANC, ambient sound, and off (no ANC or ambient). But a double tap lets you turn TalkThru on and off. Since TalkThru and ambient mode are almost indistinguishable, I think JBL should have simplified this, making the single tap all you need to switch between ANC and ambient.

You can have any two of these groups active at once, which means choices must be made. If you want playback control (and who doesn’t?) that means you need to decide which of the other four matter most. Want to control ANC and volume? You can, but only if you give up playback control. These are not choices we should be forced to make.

Built-in wear sensors automatically pause music when you pop an earbud out and play when you put it back in. The feature works really well, pausing and playing quickly in response to changes, but oddly, it only worked on the left earbud. You can also disable this in the Headphones app.

Calling on the Tour Pro+ is very good. My voice was clear as a bell.

You can choose to use just one earbud at a time, but make sure you assign the controls you need to the earbud you’re using. Don’t worry about call answer/end — these functions work on both sides, regardless of which control group you choose.

Bluetooth connection quality is excellent. Indoors, I was able to put three stories between my iPhone 11 and the Tour Pro+ without dropping the signal, and that will likely translate into very good outdoor performance too.

Out of the box, and with the right size of ear tips installed, the Tour Pro+ have a very balanced sound signature. Bass response is excellent without being overbearing, and there’s plenty of detail through the midrange. Highs are a little muted, but still very enjoyable.

But the JBL Headphones app really allows you to dramatically alter how the Tour Pro+ behave, with several presets and one custom option. My favorite is the Club One EQ, which boosts bass and treble a lot and gives a smaller bump to the midranges. It really woke these earbuds up, increasing the energy and seemingly expanding the already fairly generous soundstage. Vocals received the biggest boost, with much better clarity.

The Tour Pro+ aren’t going to shake your teeth loose with their bass — if you want that, try the JBL Reflect Mini NC — but the low-end is warm, resonant, and more than punchy enough to let you enjoy bass-forward tracks like Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy or Hans Zimmer’s Time .

They’re better balanced than Jabra’s similarly-priced Elite Active 75t and even compare favorably to Sennheiser’s CX400 BT for overall sound quality.

JBL claims six hours of playback per charge for the Tour Pro+ earbuds and I found that to be almost exactly what I got when playing music at 50% volume. If you turn ANC off, you should get eight hours, but I didn’t test this. That handily beats Apple’s AirPods Pro (4.5 hours with ANC on).

The charging case holds three full recharges, giving you a total of 24 or 32 hours before needing to find a wireless (or wired) charging spot.

Whether in Ambient Aware or TalkThru modes, it was easy to listen to conversations and stay aware of traffic.

Speaking of wireless charging, I found the charging case was very picky about its location on my charging mat. If it wasn’t dead-center, it wouldn’t charge and even then, my charging mat occasionally lost its connection. That’s not something I’ve run into very often, so it’s possible it was just my particular review unit.

ANC on the Tour Pro+ is calibrated heavily in favor of low-frequency sounds. It works best for counteracting engine and tire sounds from traffic, or the vibrations of machinery that might work their way through walls.

I found that higher frequencies, like the sound of a bathroom fan, weren’t blocked out as effectively, and there’s no way to adjust the intensity of the ANC feature to increase the amount of noise it deals with.

JBL has packed so many features into the JBL Headphones app, I’d say it’s mandatory.

It’s what I’d call a general-purpose ANC. It takes the edge off, but doesn’t really go for that cone-of-silence effect. If that’s what you want, both the Jabra Elite Active 75t and the Sony WF-SP800N proved more capable of blocking a full range of frequencies.

I do like the fact that JBL includes what it calls a “silent now” mode: Hold the two touch surfaces for five seconds and the Tour Pro+ keep ANC engaged, but turn off Bluetooth so you can get some extra peace and quiet without killing your battery.

Transparency (or ambient mode) works really well. Whether in Ambient Aware or TalkThru modes, it was easy to listen to conversations and stay aware of traffic.

One of the coolest features on the Tour Pro+ is their ability to not only work with both Alexa and Google Assistant (there are several earbud models that already do this), but also give you wake-word access to them so you don’t have to continually reach for an earbud.

Just say, “Hey Google,” or “Alexa,” and your chosen assistant is at the ready, waiting for you to speak a command.

You have to choose which one you want as your active assistant in the Headphones app, but switching from one to the other only takes a few seconds.

I found both assistants responded effortlessly in a variety of situations.

There is one very unfortunate caveat: Wake-word access only works on Android devices at the moment.

If you want wake-word access on an iPhone, you’ll need Apple’s AirPods or the Amazon Echo Buds .

Whether on a busy street or in a quiet location, calling on the Tour Pro+ is very good. Some occasional very loud sounds would overpower my voice, but for the most part, it was clear as a bell and surprisingly full-sounding.

When indoors or in a quiet outdoor location, I suspect your callers won’t even know you’re using a set of earbuds for your calls.

Normally headphone apps don’t do a whole lot, but JBL has packed so many features into the JBL Headphones app, I’d say it’s mandatory for Tour Pro+ users. It enables:

  • Find my earbuds
  • Custom controls
  • Eartip fit test
  • Battery life indicators
  • Voice assistant selection
  • Audio mode selection
  • My Alarm (which lets you set an amount of time for music to play before switching the earbuds to Silent Now mode for sleeping)

With the Tour Pro+, JBL delivers a well-priced, elegantly designed set of true wireless earbuds. They sound great, have very good battery life and call quality, and their wake-word access for voice assistants (on Android) is a rare and helpful feature.

Their mediocre ANC and awkward control options are drawbacks, but definitely not deal-breakers.

Is there a better alternative?

I’m hard-pressed to find a set of true wireless earbuds at the same price that goes toe-to-toe with the JBL Tour Pro+ in terms of features and quality, except for maybe JBL’s own Club Pro+. They’re the same price, and while they lack wake-word access to assistants, some folks will prefer their more bass-heavy sound signature.

For a more workout-friendly option, Sony’s $199 WF-SP800N have great battery life, great sound, and better ANC than the Tour Pro+. But they’re not as good for phone calls and lack wireless charging and wake-word assistant access. However, they’re compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant.

JBL’s own $150 Reflect Mini NC are also solid contenders for fitness fanatics. Sound quality is once again more bass-heavy, but these earbuds share many of the same features as the Tour Pro+.

How long will they last?

JBL builds very good products and the Tour Pro+ are no exception. High-quality materials and excellent fit and finish abound. They come with a one-year warranty from JBL and I expect they’ll last for many years of use.

Should you buy them?

Yes. Despite their weird controls, the Tour Pro+ are a feature-rich set of great-sounding ANC earbuds.

JBL Live 770NC in white. JBL

JBL always brings tons of new products to CES, and CES 2024 is no exception. In addition to new wireless earbuds and Bluetooth speakers, the Harman-owned brand has debuted six new Live and Tune wireless headphones models in both on-ear and over-ear designs.

JBL's smart, touchscreen-equipped charging case is coming to the company's latest generation of Live wireless earbuds. JBL says that the $250 Tour Pro 2 -- the wireless earbuds that debuted the smart charging case in 2023 -- rapidly sold out after they went on sale, proof, perhaps, that there's an untapped need that the touchscreen case meets.

The Live 3 were announced at CES 2024 alongside JBL's new Bluetooth speakers, wireless headphones, and party speakers and will sell for $200 when they're released in summer 2024. Like previous JBL Live wireless earbuds, the Live 3 come in three versions, but JBL has changed the naming convention to match its Tune family of wireless earbuds. The new models are the Live Flex 3, the Live Beam 3, and the Live Buds 3. Each comes in a choice of two colors: black and silver.

Apple now sells the USB-C version of its AirPods Pro Gen 2 charging case on its own, which is good news for anyone who wants to switch to USB-C charging for their existing second-gen AirPods Pro. However, the switch from lightning to USB-C will come with a hefty premium: Apple is asking $99 for the , as noted by the Verge, or half the price that's currently advertised on Amazon for a new, complete set of AirPods Pro second-gen with USB-C.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Headphones Review

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Picture

The JBL Tune Flex True Wireless are Bluetooth earbuds with an active noise cancelling (ANC) feature. Unlike other earbuds from JBL, they have a flexible design, as you can use them with silicone 'Sealing' ear tips for better noise isolation or with their 'Open' fit, which allows the buds to rest outside of your ear canal instead of entering them. Their app lets you select which ear tips you're using to optimize the sound and includes a variety of other customization features, including a graphic EQ and presets and controls for the ANC, 'Ambient Aware', and 'Talk-Through' modes.

Our Verdict

The JBL Tune Flex are good for neutral sound. They have a well-balanced sound profile, with some extra rumble and punch in the bass range and clear and detailed instruments and vocals. The app also includes a graphic EQ and presets, so you can adjust the sound to suit you.

  • Well-built and comfortable.
  • In-app sound customization features.
  • Small, closed-off passive soundstage.

The JBL Tune Flex are decent for commuting and travelling. They're very light, portable, and have a comfortable fit for most people. They last for around 6.5 hours of continuous use with ANC on and come with a case with four extra charges, so you can always pop them in for a quick recharge during long trips. However, they have a sub-par noise isolation and won't do much to block out rumbling bus or plane engines.

  • Sub-par noise isolation.

The JBL Tune Flex are great for sports and fitness. They have a comfortable, stable fit for most people using the silicone 'Sealing' ear tips. They're rated IPX4 for protection against water exposure like light rain, and they have a wireless design, so you can't snag a wire and yank the headphones out of your ears accidentally. While they have sub-par noise isolation, so they won't block out the sounds of a busy gym, you can use 'Ambient Aware' mode when you want to hear your surroundings, like during a run outside.

  • Stable fit with silicone ear tips.

The JBL Tune Flex are adequate for the office. They're comfortable, sturdy, and have a well-balanced, versatile default sound profile. They last for about 6.5 hours of continuous use and come with a case that holds four extra charges, so you can always recharge at lunch. Unfortunately, they don't have good noise isolation, so they aren't ideal for cutting out distractions like background chit-chat. They leak enough audio that people nearby can hear some of your music if you like loud volume.

  • Good noise handling.
  • No multi-device pairing.
  • Sub-par mic recording quality.

These earbuds aren't suitable for wireless gaming. They can only connect via Bluetooth, so they won't work with Xbox or PlayStation consoles. They have higher latency with PCs, even with the lower-latency 'Video' mode activated, so your audio and video will be out of sync.

These earbuds are wireless only; you can't use them for wired gaming.

The JBL Tune Flex are okay for phone calls. The mic has a sub-par recording quality, so your voice is understandable but sounds unnatural over the phone. The mic does a good job of separating your voice from ambient sound, so if you make a call from a busy street, sounds won't drown out your voice. However, the earbuds' ANC feature doesn't block out very much noise, so you might have difficulty hearing calls you make from noisy places.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The JBL Tune Flex come in a variety of colors. The standard version comes in 'Black', 'Blue', and 'White'. We tested it in 'Blue', and you can see the label for the unit we tested here . There's also a 'Ghost Edition' version, which features a transparent plastic design for the buds and case and comes in 'Purple', 'Black', and 'White'.

If you come across another variant or your headphones are different, let us know in the forums and we'll update our review.

Compared To Other Headphones

The JBL Tune Flex are Bluetooth earbuds that are designed to be used either with their 'Sealing' silicone ear tips, which provide a more stable fit and better noise isolation, or with the 'Open' tips, which allow the buds to sit outside your ear canal. Like other similar JBL earbuds, like the  JBL TUNE 230NC TWS True Wireless and  JBL Live Free NC+ TWS True Wireless , they have a well-balanced default sound profile with a little extra bass and in-app sound customization features. However, their ANC doesn't block out much noise compared to some similarly-priced options like the  JBL Live Pro+ TWS True Wireless or  Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC Truly Wireless .

If you're looking for more earbuds, try our recommendations for the best earbuds and in-ear headphones , the best wireless Bluetooth earbuds under $100 , and the best JBL earbuds and headphones .

The JBL Tune Buds True Wireless  are better in-ears for most purposes than the JBL Tune Flex True Wireless. While both buds have similarly neutral sound profiles and are equipped with ANC, the Tune Buds have a longer continuous battery life and a better noise isolation performance, making them a better choice for commuting. They also feature multi-device pairing, which is great if you want to connect multiple devices to them while working from home or at the office. However, some users may prefer the Tune Flex 's stem design and that they come with both 'open' and 'sealing' ear tips, which allows you to choose between a passively isolating seal and one that lets in some ambient noise.

The JBL Live Pro 2 TWS True Wireless are better earbuds for most uses than the JBL Tune Flex True Wireless . While the Tune Flex have a more balanced sound profile out of the box and a more comfortable, stable fit, they have a sub-par noise isolation performance, even with their 'sealing' ear tips. The Live Pro 2 have a great noise isolation performance by comparison and a longer continuous battery life, making them a better choice for commuting and travel. They also have Bluetooth multipoint connectivity, which can be handy if you want to pair to both your laptop and your phone.

JBL TUNE 230NC TWS True Wireless are better than the JBL Tune Flex Wireless . The earbuds have similar features, but the TUNE 230NC have a better noise isolation performance and a longer battery life. They also leak less audio. However, the Tune Flex have lower latency using 'Video' mode, so you won't have audio syncing issues while watching a video on your phone.

The JBL Tune Flex Wireless are better than the Beats Studio Buds True Wireless . The JBL have a more neutral, versatile default sound profile and an app with sound customization features. They also have a longer continuous battery life and an auto-off timer to save power. However, the Beats have a quick pairing feature that works with Android and iOS. They support Apple's Spatial Audio feature, which works with apps like Apple Music and is meant to create a more immersive listening experience.

The  Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC Truly Wireless are better than the JBL Tune Flex True Wireless . The Anker's ANC feature blocks out much more noise, and they support multi-device pairing. They have a virtual surround sound feature to help create a more immersive listening experience.

The  JBL Live Free NC+ TWS True Wireless and the JBL Tune Flex True Wireless are similar, but the Live are a little better for most uses. They have a more stable fit, which is useful for workouts, leak less audio, and have better noise isolation. They also have an in-app parametric EQ, which gives you more control over the sound than the Tune's graphic EQ. However, you can use the Tune Flex without silicone tips, so you might prefer them if you don't like the fit of in-ears.

Test Results

perceptual testing image

The JBL Tune Flex have a similar design to the JBL TUNE 230NC True Wireless with short stems. The JBL logo is engraved on each stem. The buds come in a few different colors: 'Black', 'Blue', and 'White'. There are also a few 'Ghost Edition' colors: 'Purple', 'Black', and 'White'. The case and buds of 'Ghost' variants are made of transparent plastic.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Comfort Picture

The buds offer a comfortable fit for most people. They come with three differently-sized silicone 'Sealing' tips and can also be used without the tips for an 'Open' fit. With the 'Open' tips, they sit outside your ear canal. You may prefer that if you have small ears or are sensitive to pressure inside your ear, but it gives them a looser, less secure fit. Conversely, the 'Sealing' ear tips fit snuggly inside your ear canal without putting a lot of pressure on your ears. Unfortunately, the long stem coming down from the buds can be annoying since it can get in the way of earrings or earmuffs in the winter.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Controls Picture

The JBL Tune Flex have easy to use touch controls. There are audio tones and voice prompts for functions like pairing, audio playback, and ANC mode changes. Registering a command only requires a light touch, and it's easy to accidentally pause your audio or change the ANC mode as you readjust the earbuds. On the plus side, the controls can be customized in the earbuds' companion app.

On the left earbud:

  • Single tap: Switches between ANC on and 'Ambient Aware' mode, which lets you hear your surroundings without removing the buds.
  • Double tap: Toggles 'Talk-Through' mode, which pauses audio and lets in ambient sound.

On the right earbud:

  • Single tap: Plays and pauses audio.
  • Double tap: Skips to the next track.
  • Triple tap: Skips to the previous track.

On either earbud:

  • Double tap: Answers and ends a phone call.
  • Tap and hold: Activates Siri and rejects an incoming phone call. During a call, mutes and unmutes the microphone.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Portability Picture

They're very small and portable, which is expected for earbuds. You can easily fit them into pockets and bags, even inside their case.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Case Picture

They come with a good, very light case. The hinge helps it snap closed, and there are magnets inside to keep the earbuds in place. It has three LED lights to indicate the case's remaining battery life. The case feels reasonably sturdy but doesn't have a super solid or premium feel.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Build Quality Picture

They're well-built earbuds. They don't feel particularly premium or high-end but have a solid plastic build. The silicone ear tips may deteriorate or rip after some time, but that isn't unusual. The earbuds are rated IPX4 for water resistance, which protects them from exposure to light rain or drips.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Stability Picture

They have good stability. Whether you're using the silicone 'Sealing' tips or the 'Open' tips, they don't fall out even if you make big, fast head movements. However, without the silicone tips, they move around more in your ears, so if you're using them during a workout, you'll have to readjust more often.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Frequency Response

The JBL Tune Flex have a neutral sound profile using the silicone 'Sealing' tips and accompanying setting in the app. They deliver some extra rumble and punch in the bass range, while instruments and vocals are clear and detailed. If you use the 'Open' fit and change the ear tip sound setting in the app accordingly, they deliver more bass, but sibilants like S and T sounds are a little duller. Here's a comparison of the frequency response with the 'Open' tips and the silicone 'Sealing' tips.

Whether you're using the silicone tips or not, you can also customize the sound profile with a graphic EQ and presets in the companion app.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Consistency L

They have excellent frequency response consistency with the silicone 'Sealing' ear tips. There are some deviations in the sound depending on fit, seal, and positioning in the bass and treble ranges. However, they aren't major, and if you adjust the buds with each use, you can get a consistent sound.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Raw FR L

The JBL Tune Flex have excellent bass accuracy. The entire range is somewhat overemphasized, so your audio has extra rumble and punch. The high-bass is more neutral, so audio sounds warm without being boomy.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Mid

They have excellent mid accuracy. The low and mid-mid are very neutral, so instruments and vocals are clear and present in the mix. However, there's some overemphasis in the high-mids, so in songs like Adele's 'Someone Like You', voices sound clear and intense but also somewhat harsh.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Treble

They have excellent treble accuracy. The low and mid treble are very neutral, so instruments and vocals are detailed, and sibilant sounds like cymbals are bright.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Peaks/Dips Graph

They control their sound profile very well. There are some peaks and dips across the range, but most are pretty minor. A dip in mid-mid in the left driver nudges instruments and vocals toward the back of the mix, while a peak in the high-mid in the right driver adds harshness. There's also a dip in the left driver's low-treble, which hurts the detail of vocals and instruments, and the peak present in both drivers makes sibilants slightly more piercing.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Group Delay

They have excellent imaging, which is typical among JBL headphones we've tested, with a few exceptions. This is an indication of the brand's good quality control and ergonomics. The group delay falls below the audibility threshold for the entire range, resulting in tight bass and transparent treble reproduction. The left and right drivers are well-matched in amplitude, but some mismatch exists in their frequency and phase response. This causes vocals and instruments to seem pushed towards the center, making them quieter on the left side. Vocals seem incorrectly placed on the left, and high-bass frequencies sound more full and properly placed in the soundstage on the right side. It is noticeable with real-life content but not very distracting unless you're looking for it. Also, imaging varies between units.

They have a bad passive soundstage, which is normal for earbuds. Since the sound doesn't interact with your outer ear, audio seems to come from inside your head instead of speakers in the room around you. Also, the soundstage seems small and closed off compared to open-back headphones.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Weighted Harmonic Distortion

They have a great weighted harmonic distortion performance. Aside from some slight distortion in the mid-treble range, the rest of the response falls within good levels for the entire spectrum, resulting in clean and clear audio reproduction.

These are the settings used to test the JBL Tune Flex earbuds. Our results are only valid when the earbuds are used in this configuration.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Noise Isolation

The ANC can be set to different modes in the app, from 1 to 6. However, the noise isolation doesn't increase with each mode in the way you might expect. Our results reflect the earbuds' performance with the ANC set to '5' since it provides better noise isolation in the bass range than mode '6'. You can see a comparison of every mode here .

When set to mode '5' and using the silicone 'Sealing' ear tips, they have poor noise isolation. Even though they have ANC, it doesn't do a good job of isolating you from ambient sound. It lets in most bass-range noise, like rumbling engines. While it does a better job of reducing mid-range noise, some earbuds block out a similar amount of noise, like background chit-chat, without ANC altogether.

Their noise isolation performance also changes if you use them with the 'Open' tips. You can see how they perform with and without ANC in a graph here . The ANC still helps them block out noise, but they don't block out as much overall.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Leakage

They have a decent leakage performance. With the silicone 'Sealing' tips, audio leakage is loud enough to be heard over the noise floor of an average office, but it's mostly concentrated in the treble range, so it sounds thin. You can also see their performance with the 'Open' ear tips here . The 'Open' tips create less of a seal, so the earbuds leak more audio across the range.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Microphone Frequency Response

The mic has a sub-par recording quality. Your voice is understandable and sounds full-bodied, but also unnatural and a bit robotic.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless SpNR

The mic has a good noise handling performance. If you're in a moderately noisy environment like an office, the mic takes a few seconds to adjust itself, and afterward, background noise isn't audible, and your voice is clear. Your voice won't be completely drowned out somewhere louder, like a subway station, although it can sound distorted or clip out briefly with really loud noise, like when a train goes by.

The manufacturer advertises a continuous battery life of six hours, and we measured a little more than that. However, battery life varies depending on use. With ANC off, the manufacturer advertises them to last eight hours off of a single charge. The earbuds fully recharge in less than an hour, and the case holds about four additional charges. They're also equipped with an auto-off timer and standby mode to help conserve battery life when you're not listening to audio.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless App Picture

The JBL Tune Flex have a great app. Like other JBL earbuds, like the JBL TUNE 230NC TWS True Wireless , you can use the app to access features like ANC, Talk-Through, Ambient Aware Mode, and Smart Audio & Video. You can adjust the sound profile with a graphic EQ and presets and customize the maximum volume, gesture controls, and left/right sound balance. These earbuds stand out from other options from JBL because of their choice of ear tips, and you can select which way you're using the buds in the app, which is meant to adjust the sound profile accordingly. It's quite easy to navigate, and you can see a video of the app in use here .

The JBL Tune Flex have adequate Bluetooth connectivity. Unlike more recent JBL earbuds, like the JBL Tune Buds True Wireless , they lack Bluetooth multi-device pairing. By default, they have high latency with iOS, Android, and PCs, so you'll have audio syncing issues while watching videos. However, if you activate 'Smart Audio Modes' and select 'Video', it lowers their latency with Android and iOS devices to good levels, so your audio and video will be in sync. Latency with PCs is still somewhat high, so they aren't ideal for gaming or watching movies on your computer. However, some apps and devices compensate for latency.

JBL Tune Flex True Wireless Cable Picture

You can't use these earbuds wired. They come with a USB-A to USB-C cable for charging the case.

These earbuds are compatible with Bluetooth-enabled PCs but can't connect any other way.

The JBL Tune Flex have a portable case with a USB-C port for charging. It doesn't support wireless charging.

JBL's new wireless earbuds are crammed with next-gen features, including a screen on the case

JBL's new 'buds come in three different styles with hi-res audio support and a touchscreen on the charging case

JBL Live Beam 3 earbuds and charging case, showing its screen, on an orange background

JBL has announced a new range of earbuds at CES 2024 , called JBL Live 3. They come in three different designs, but they've all got one really big new feature in common: JBL's touchscreen Smart Charging Case, which is designed to make it much easier and faster to access your audio playback and your earbuds' various features. Think of it as like having a smartwatch screen right on the case.

We first saw the case in the JBL Tour Pro 2 and liked it a lot: in our JBL Tour Pro 2 review we said that the case was "a thing of beauty. It is delightful. It is fun." While the novelty wore off after a few days and we stopped fiddling with it, there was no doubt that it did exactly what it set out to do by making features easier to access. If you're the kind of listener who's often tweaking settings to get the best possible sound then the case may well be a game-changer.

There are three options in the JBL Live 3 range: Buds, Beam and Flex. Like their current incarnations, the Buds 3 look most like standard earbuds, while the Beam 3 are like Apple 's AirPods Pro with a stick design and an in-ear fit, while the Flex 3 are like regular AirPods with a stick design but no silicone tip that goes right in the ear canal. All three have JBL's True Adaptive Noise Cancelling, Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio , JBL Spatial Sound and LDAC Hi-Res Audio for compatible phones, multi-point connectivity, wireless charging, and six external mics to power the noise cancellation and help with calls.

JBL Live 3 range, showing the three different fit types

There are some differences between them outside of the design, though. The Buds and Beam are certified IP55 for water resistance but the Flex are IP54; the Buds and Beam have 10mm dynamic drivers compared to 12mm for the Flex; and there are different levels of battery life: up to 40 on the Buds, 48 on the Beam and 50 on the Flex (all including both buds and case).

As with the JBL Tour Pro 2, one of the selling points here is the ear canal test. That's designed to make your earbuds truly personal by analyzing your ears and adjusting the sound profile accordingly for a more accurate result, in theory. JBL's noise cancelling offers a good range of options including Ambient Aware, which ensures you don't get so lost in music you get run over by a bus.

The JBL Live 3 Earbuds will be available in summer 2024 from JBL.com and the usual retailers. The price will be $199.95 (approx. £156 / AU$296).

We like the approach here of offering the same feature in different fit types, so you can choose whatever suits you best without being annoyed that you're missing out on features that others get. At this price, though, JBL is in competition with some of the best wireless earbuds around – you can now get the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II for around that price, for example. We'll see how they hold up as soon as we can get our hands on them.

JBL Live Flex - As an alternative to classic in-ear headphones

First-class sound enjoyment all day long, free from disturbing external influences, plus maximum comfort - this is what harman international industries promises for the latest headphones from the renowned jbl brand, the jbl live flex, which are designed as earbuds..

Photo of Michael Holzinger

  • Harman International Industries promises undisturbed sound enjoyment and a high level of comfort for the new JBL Live Flex earbuds with True Adaptive Noise Cancelling Technology.

With the JBL Live Flex, Harman International Industries presents the latest headphones in the personal audio devices range of the renowned US brand JBL in the Harman Livestyle Division. This is said to be a solution aimed at people with an urban lifestyle who are looking for headphones that they use intensively, perhaps even all day, for a wide variety of tasks. The new JBL Live Flex is supposed to convince with a fine sound, which it can present undisturbed even in noisy surroundings thanks to an integrated True Adaptive Noise Cancelling Technology, as well as with comfort and style, as the manufacturer emphasises.

It must also be emphasised that the new JBL Live Flex is a True Wireless Earbud and therefore a special headphone, which is designed in the so-called Stick Open Design.

JBL Live Flex – Stick Open Design

The so-called Stick Open Design, which the manufacturer emphasises, is supposed to ensure a particularly high wearing comfort even during intensive use. The manufacturer is convinced that this special shape is the design preferred by many users in the in-ear headphone segment, whereby the term “earbuds” is used.

The earbud is not inserted as far into the ear canal as is the case with many other design concepts in the area of in-ear headphones, but rather the earplug is fixed in the ear cup.

Many users find this much more comfortable than with classic in-ear headphones that sit as deep as possible in the ear canal, which is even perceived as rather uncomfortable.

The disadvantage, however, is that the passive shielding against ambient noise is comparatively low, and the challenge of achieving a clearly defined sound signature is much greater than with in-ear headphones that disappear deep into the ear canal and thus sit more or less “directly” on the user’s eardrum.

Foto © Harman International Industries | JBL Live Flex

“We know from extensive research that the Stick Open design is one of the most popular earphone styles today, although external noise cancellation has always been a challenge with this design. At JBL, we want to offer consumers the broadest portfolio possible and always deliver the very latest technology. The JBL Live Flex does just that with its unique combination of a stick open design and our True Adaptive Noise Cancellation technology. It automatically adapts to any movement and any environment, even though there is no physical seal between the user and the outside world.” Pascal van Laer, Vice President of Headphones & Wearables at Harman

Immersive JBL Signature Sound

The developers of the new JBL Live Flex use 12 mm drivers with neodymium drive and want to be able to offer immersive JBL Signature Sound or even immersive JBL Spatial Sound.

Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation

To ensure that this is always undisturbed by external influences, the JBL Live Flex is equipped with True Adaptive Active Noise Cancelling Technology, which the manufacturer describes as particularly effective and offers no less than 17 different ANC filters and an Ambient Aware Mode.

Harman Personi-Fi 2.0

In general, the manufacturer has attached great importance to giving the user the possibility of individual customisation. This is called Harman Personi-Fi 2.0 Technology, which of course focuses on the JBL Headphones App. This is available for Google Android and Apple iOS.

Foto © Harman International Industries | JBL Live Flex

Crystal clear voice quality

The new JBL Live Flex is designed to provide the best possible sound quality not only when playing music, but also when making phone calls. Each earphone is equipped with six beamforming microphones. In addition to crystal clear phone calls, the JBL Live Flex also allows voice control via Apple Siri, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Bluetooth 5.3 LE audio compatible

The new JBL Live Flex is said to be one of the first headphones to rely on Bluetooth 5.3 LE Audio, with this feature being made available via an OTA update (over-the-air update).

What is certain is that the JBL Live Flex can be connected to several devices simultaneously via Multi-Point Connect, such as a smartphone and a DAP.

Foto © Harman International Industries | JBL Live Flex

Long battery life

The JBL Live Flex is said to allow up to 40 hours of playtime, which means eight hours at a stretch when operating with active noise cancellation turned off. The 32 additional hours are achieved by charging in the included transport box with integrated power bank.

With active noise cancellation, it is six hours at a stretch plus 24 hours via the transport box, so you can be on the road for up to 30 hours without a power outlet.

In the simplest case, charging is via wireless charging using the Qi-compatible transport box, which is also IPX2 certified and therefore resistant to water and dust. The JBL Live Flex itself is certified to IP54.

Prices and availability

The new JBL Live Flex is expected to be available in stores immediately, with the manufacturer quoting a suggested retail price of € 179,99. These new earbuds will be available in black, blue, silver and rose.

Getting to the point

The new JBL Live Flex from the renowned JBL brand should be ideal for those users who are not happy with conventional in-ear headphones because they find it uncomfortable to have to push them deep into the ear canal. This is exactly what the new JBL Live Flex avoid as a so-called Earbus and still offer functions such as adaptive, active noise cancellation and thus undisturbed music enjoyment.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

jbl tour flex

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
