Best of Java

It was a fast pace to see different parts of Jawa and was exactly what I needed to explore Indonesia in 9 days. Tour guide was amazing and knowledgeable. Accommodations were great and people super friendly. I went to all optional activities and they were definitely something that I would regret skipping.

Thanks to its fertile volcanic soil and plentiful rainfall, Java is the most populous island in the Indonesian archipelago. The nation’s sprawling capital, Jakarta, lies on its north coast, but the undisputed cultural hub is Yogyakarta, where visitors come to experience traditional Javanese music, dance, arts and crafts, as well as to visit the great archaeological sites of Borobudur and Prambanan nearby. Smouldering in the background, a phalanx of active volcanoes form an other-worldly horizon, where you can climb in the predawn gloom to gaze over the rim of giant craters for the sunrise view of a lifetime.

Java & Bali Explorer

22 days | visit bali and java on this indonesian explorer trip.

Learning about rice growing in Bali

Combining Java’s collection of earthly volcanoes and pre-historic jungles with Bali’s stunning beaches, Java and Bali Explorer is a great way to experience the incredible contrasts and magical scenery of Indonesia. Get to the heart of life on this famous archipelago by visiting rice paddies, tea plantations and remote villages. Be charmed by Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, witness traditional dance performances and visit ornate temples. From the fervent pace of Jakarta to the back alleys of Ubud, the islands of Bali and Java are Indonesia’s most celebrated duo – a treasure trove of beautiful beaches, rolling hills and dynamic cities.

Trip overview

  • Cycling is a great way to get out and see the landscape and meet the locals. Enjoy cycling trips out of Yogyakarta and Ubud through the backcountry, a world of flower-studded fields or rice paddies, and smiling locals
  • Take a guided walk through the jungle and rice paddies of Seloliman Nature Reserve, then sit back, relax and soak up the ambience under the stars
  • Conquer two mountains! Climbing Mt Bromo and Mt Batur in the early hours of the morning. If the conditions are right, you'll be rewarded with a dazzling sunrise views
  • With hiking, cycling and snorkelling, this trip is steeped in outdoor activities. But there's also plenty of time to relax – bathe in hot springs, laze on beach in Bali, or stroll around the villages we visit
  • Gain an insight into the culture of two very distinct Indonesian islands
  • This trip includes included walks, hiking, cycling and snorkelling. While no specific training is required, a moderate level of fitness will help you to get the most out of the activities on this trip.
  • Java is one of the most one of the largest islands in Indonesia, and we cover a large distance on this trip. Where suitable we travel by train to make the journey more comfortable but on some days we will be taking road transport. Travel times can be long, and traffic can be heavy and slow, especially over holiday periods.
  • You will be expected to carry your own bags onto and off trains, and for short distances (porters are available in most stations at an extra charge).
  • Dress standards in Java are more conservative than other areas of Indonesia. It's a good idea to take a sarong along with you, or to cover knees and shoulders for the temple visits included on this trip.
  • To climb mountains for sunrise, we must start very early! Your sunrise climb of Mt Bromo and Mt Batur start around 3 am. This means you'll be walking over some gravel and volcanic rock in the dark. Head torches, a rain jacket, some warm clothing and good walking shoes are a must. The view at sunrise is well worth the effort, especially if the weather's fine!
  • Accommodation at Seloliman Nature Reserve, near Mt Bromo and Mt Batur is in basic guesthouses. Set on the edge of a tropical forest the Seloliman Reserve embraces philosophies of environmental education, and we are sure you will get a good nights sleep. The guesthouses at Mt Bromo and Mt Batur are close to the base of each mountain, to reduce the travelling time to start our sunrise walks, and give you a little bit more sleep.

Selamat datang! Welcome to Indonesia. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm today. If you arrive early, why not check out some of Jakarta's interesting museums, such as the Wayang (puppetry), Balai Seni Rupa (fine arts) and maritime museums. The National Museum is great for first-time visitors. For a city monuments, don't miss the Monas (National Monument) dedicated to the spirit of the Indonesian people.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Museums in Indonesia are closed on Mondays, if you would like to visit any museums it is recommended to do so on day 1.

Familiarise yourself with the city on a full-day tour with your local guide. Take in Sunda Kelapa port – where the Dutch first landed, temple-filled Chinatown and the old town of Batavia. See Si Jagur – an old Portuguese cannon ornately decorated with a disguised meaning. Visit a Chinese mansion (Chandra Naya) and gain an insight into the beautiful Peranakan architecture. Wander about Fatahillah Square, then explore the religious side of the city at Cathedral Church and Istiqlal Mosque – the largest mosque in South East Asia.

  • Jakarta - City tour

Today there's some distance to cover, so you will spend large chunk of the day travelling. Travel by train to Purwokerto City (approximately 5.5 hours), then take a private minibus to Pangandaran (approximately 3 hours). Pangandaran is a small fishing village popular with visitors looking for a coastal escape. The Penanjung Nature Reserve on the adjoining peninsula boasts some impressive flora and fauna, which you’ll see some of tomorrow!

Set off on a tour of the local surrounds, villages, cottage industries and the impressive Green Canyon. Your day trip begins with a stop at a local market to check out the produce and home industries such as palm sugar and rice cracker production, as well as the famous Javanese wayang golek (traditional wooden puppets). Then you'll continue to the Green Canyon. Hop aboard your boat and travel upriver (approximately 30 minutes) through superb jungle scenery, before stopping for a swim up in the canyon itself. This spot, whose water is as green as its name suggests, is a popular hangout for locals, so take the opportunity to interact. Your day will take you to a nearby beach where you can have a break for lunch and swim in the afternoon before heading back to your accommodation.

  • Pangandaran - Green Canyon
  • Pangandaran - Village & cottage industries tour
  • Pangandaran - Guided trek in coastal reserve - IDR200000

Please note that, after times of heavy rain, the water runs brown rather than green. Weak swimmers are advised to continue wearing their life jackets for swimming in the Canyon.

Head inland by private minibus (approximately 1 hour) before catching a train to Yogyakarta (approximately 4 hours). This town is one of South East Asia's real gems. It's Java's cultural heart, has a great atmosphere and is an Intrepid favourite. From batik workshops to the nearby Hindu and Buddhist temples, Yogya offers a great array of cultural avenues to explore.

Rise early to catch the morning light and avoid the crowds at Candi Borobudur – the largest Buddhist structure on earth. This magnificent World Heritage-listed site is set in a tranquil park. As you approach, you'll see the enigmatic temple rise before you, looming amongst the tropical foliage. With your local guide, follow the route of ancient pilgrims, circling the mandala-shaped structure from the early realms towards Nirvana. It's truly one of South East Asia's treasures. Afterwards, enjoy an afternoon of free time. You might like to visit one of Yogya's other heritage temples – this time perhaps of the Hindu faith. Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu complex in Java. This evening, perhaps catch a performance of the epic Ramayana Ballet – your leader will be able to check dates and availability for you.

  • Borobudur - Temple Tour
  • Yogyakarta - Prambanan temple complex - IDR525000
  • Yogyakarta - City Walking Tour - IDR300000
  • Yogyakarta - Silver jewellery making course - IDR300000
  • Yogyakarta - Ramayana Ballet - IDR450000
  • Yogyakarta - Prambanan visit, Ramayana Ballet and Dinner - IDR1000000

Pedal out of the city on a cycling tour (approximately 6 km) through the rice fields and countryside surrounding Yogyakarta. See the locals in this area making various goods, from bricks to tofu and tempe. As well as palms and lush green grasslands, you will see the odd burst of yellow and pink flowers by the side of the road, which make for great photo opportunities. This cycling tour is on relatively flat ground, so it won't be too strenuous. There will be ample time to take in all the interesting scenes of slow-paced local life. You will then have a free afternoon today and there are many activities for you to choose in Yogyakarta. Perhaps a cooking class to learn about Indonesian cuisine or salute to the sun with a yoga class – there is something for everyone!

  • Yogyakarta - Countryside cycling tour
  • Yogyakarta - Cooking course - IDR250000
  • Yogyakarta - Yoga Class - IDR60000

If you do not wish to cycle your leader can arrange a motorized becak. A small fee of IDR 100,000 will be required for this service and is paid for locally.

Travel by train (approximately 4.5 hours) before transferring on a minivan (approximately 1 hour) to Seloliman Nature Reserve. The peaceful Seloliman Nature Reserve is situated on the slopes of the sacred volcano of Mt Penanggungan. Meet some of the volunteers working at the Seloliman Environmental Education Centre and eat delicious, locally grown organic produce cooked by their staff. The centre's accommodation is atmospheric, even with open-air bathrooms built in harmony with the surrounding forest, so take this opportunity to relax. This is a beautiful spot to appreciate nature – be sure to sit under the stars tonight and take in the ambience of what’s around.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Visit
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Lunch
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Dinner

Please note our accommodation tonight is in basic bungalows, with very simple bathroom facilities. Due to the jungle location there are often many insects, so make sure you bring insect repellent.

Join reserve staff on a walk around the reserve, learning about the local environment and the Javanese tradition of herbal medicine (approximately 2.5 hours). You'll gain an insight into the region’s flora and fauna, traditional farming methods, rice production and the mini hydroelectricity plant. Finish up with a traditional jamu demonstration and a tasting of this Javanese herbal medicine. Continue on to Mt Bromo – the timeless homeland of the Tenggerese (approximately 4 hours). The still-active volcano – standing at 2329 metres – is the most well-known of the Tengger massif. This region is also the homeland of the Tenggerese and the steep, cultivated hills of the Tengger Valley. Retire early tonight in preparation for tomorrow's early start.

  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Guided Walk & Herbal Drink Tasting

Your accommodation tonight is in villas and each villa has two 2 rooms with a shared lounge room and a shared bathroom.

Please note that the jeeps used on this day are not fitted with seat belts.

Your early start today (around 3 am) will be well worth it; trust us. First, drive to a lookout point in jeeps for sunrise over the sea of sands. If the weather is clear, the sunrise over this eerie sea of volcanoes is an unforgettable experience. Afterwards descend in your jeep to the sea of sands and climb up to the volcano crater to take a peek inside. The ascent is not too difficult (approximately 45 minutes), but it can be very cold, so don't forget to bring extra layers of clothing. It's also worth bringing a scarf to cover your nose and mouth, as it can get dusty. Return to the hotel to freshen up and then depart midmorning to Kalibaru in a private minivan (approximately 5.5 hours). You'll stop for lunch en route, then arrive in the afternoon, with time to relax by the pool or perhaps indulge in a local massage.

  • Resort (1 night)
  • Mt Bromo - Sunrise climb

Mt Bromo is one of the highlights of the trip but it’s very popular, so during holiday periods expect it to be crowded. At times of increased volcanic activity, the crater of Mt Bromo is closed. There may be amendments to your sunrise hike and this portion of the trip depending on necessary safety precautions.

Head out early in the morning to tour nearby coffee, cocoa and rubber plantations. You'll see how rubber is processed, how coffee is dried, and, if there's time, how cocoa is fermented. Before you set off, enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and snack on fried banana. Travel by minibus to the far eastern end of Java – Gilimanuk (approximately 3 hours). There is often a lot of heavy traffic on this stretch of road as it's the main entry point for Bali, so there may be some delays. Next you'll board a ferry across the Java Strait (approximately 1 hour), before boarding another minibus for a journey along the west coast of Bali (approximately 1 hour). Travel on to Pemuteran – your destination for the next two nights.

  • Kalibaru - Coffee, Cocoa & Rubber Plantation Tour

Enjoy a relaxing day in this gorgeous beachside location. Maybe start the day with a relaxing yoga class and then explore the local area at your own pace. You could visit the surrounding monkey-filled temples, go swimming off the coast, or think about booking in a snorkelling or diving expedition to the turquoise and marine life-rich waters of Menjangan Island. Otherwise, simply sit back, relax and watch the fishermen go about their day-to-day on one of the beaches.

  • Pemuteran - Yoga lesson (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR400000
  • Pemuteran - Jungle trekking (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR875000
  • Pemuteran - Snorkelling (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR850000
  • Pemuteran - Temple tour (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR700000
  • Pemuteran - Cooking class (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR350000

Make the journey to Ubud (approximately 5 hours). En route, stop in at Taman Ayun Temple, taking in the impressive Balinese architecture while you stroll around the tranquil gardens. Ubud is Bali's main arts and cultural centre – a thriving centre of markets, shops and warungs and close by to verdant rice terraces and lush jungles. With nature and wellbeing at its core, Ubud is a highland haven of Bali. It's a wonderful place to experience the magic that has made Bali such a popular travel destination. Tonight, why not get a group of your travel pals together and find a local place to eat some traditional Balinese cuisine.

  • Mengwi - Taman Ayun Temple

Enjoy a free day to soak up the relaxed atmosphere of Ubud, before your continuing meeting at 6pm. Perhaps head to one of the most popular landmarks of Ubud – Pura Taman Saraswati. The most notable feature of the pura is its lotus pond and water garden, marking the outer area of the actual temple. Located in central Ubud, it’s an easy walk from your hotel. Ubud is full of boutique shops and cafes serving wonderful organic produce. It is the perfect place to just wonder and stop for a bite to eat watching the hustle and bustle go by without you.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers. Afterwards, perhaps head out to for a group meal at one of the delicious local restaurants.

Start the day with a guided walking tour around Ubud with your local leader (about 2.5 hours). Gain an insight into daily village life as you pass lush rice fields, an alang alang valley (type of wild grass used to make the roof of traditional buildings) and stop by a Balinese home for coffee and experience the traditional Balinese offering. The tour ends in central Ubud, where you'll have time to explore the many cafes, galleries and shops on your own. In the evening, sit down and enjoy a traditional Kecak dance performance. Driven not by musical instruments, but by human chanting, this fascinating theatrical performance is considered a highlight by many of our travellers.

  • Ubud - Campuhan Ridge & Village walk
  • Bali - Kecak Fire Dance
  • Ubud - Home visit, local coffee & Balinese offering
  • Ubud - Saraswati Temple Lotus Garden - Free
  • Ubud - Whitewater rafting - IDR740000

Please note that when Kecak dance performance is not available, the dance will be replaced by other Balinese dance performance.

Today you’ll explore the area from a different angle – from the saddle of a bike. Enjoy a 2.5-hour tour through backstreets, villages and rice fields. It’s a relatively easy ride – much of the route is downhill – and there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or a brief rest. You’ll also stop to check out some small, intricately carved temples, before concluding your bike tour back in Ubud. After refuelling with lunch, head for the hills to the village of Undisan, via private minivan. Set against a backdrop of Bali's highest peak, Mt Agung, the peaceful village of Sidemen is proof that Bali still has some pockets that are untouched by tourism.

  • Ubud - Bayung Gede (Kahyangan) Village to Tampak Siring cycling tour

Today’s driving time is approximately 2 hours.

Bicycle helmets are included on your ride, and there is a support vehicle if the going gets too tough. Keep in mind, it's a little cooler up here, thanks to the elevation. You may need to pack some warmer clothes.

Take a morning walk (approximately 2 hours) around Undisan's rice terrraces, visiting the craftspeople of the traditional trade, village temples and enjoy a traditional 'bungkus' lunch with refreshing coconut. The walk is a great chance to take in the beautiful scenery before we bid a farewell to Undisan and make tracks to Sibetan Village . You’ll be given a special welcome by the chief of the village, then check into your homestay accommodation before enjoying some free time in the afternoon. You might like to explore the traditional village a little or simply just relax and take in the atmosphere here. Alternatively, you could take on an optional cooking class and learn the secret ingredients and spices of the traditional cuisine here. This evening, you’ll enjoy some time spent with the locals and be treated to a typical dinner of salak (snake fruit), prepared for you by the villagers.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Undisan - Village tour
  • Undisan - Traditional Village Lunch
  • Local community cooking class - IDR150000

Today’s driving time is approximately 30 minutes.

This morning, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through an ancient Salak Plantation with the opportunity to interact with the local community. Here, you’ll see cultural heritage plants – the remains of a white mango tree which was first planted in Sibetan in the 16th century as well as a Jaka Moding Plant (a type of palm tree) which is a relic plant. You’ll tuck into Tipat Blayag (Rhombus) for lunch; rice wrapped in young coconut leaves, combined with side dishes of chicken and vegetables. After some time exploring the village and surrounds on foot, you’ll take to four wheels for a journey higher into the mountains, driving along the crater rim road to a fishing village on the edge of Lake Batur. Volcanic Mt Batur (1717 metres/5633 feet) sits inside a stark and spectacular caldera and with Lake Batur below, it's a stunning sight. The lake supports the local fishing industry, while many of the villagers work as guides for the volcano climb. Your accommodation for the evening is in a great location to start tomorrow's early morning trek without extra travelling time.

  • Local community Salak plantation walk

There are often mosquitos and bugs around Lake Batur, so be sure to pack your insect repellent. Long pants and sleeves will also be useful to protect from insects.

It’s a very early start today – you’ll wake bright and early at around 3 am to begin the 1.5 to 2-hour walk to the summit of Mt Batur in order to reach the top before sunrise. Trust us, it’s worth the effort. On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt Rinjani. The view of the gorgeous sunrise over the valleys of Bali may well be the most memorable part of your trip. Do keep in mind, however, that the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes the view is obscured by clouds. After descending the volcano, there's an option to soak in hot springs with fantastic views over the lake and caldera. Then make the journey from the mountains to the small coastal town of Lovina, made famous by its dolphins that patrol the coast. It's also a great spot for fine food, traditional massages and yoga – just what the doctor ordered after today’s epic mountain climb.

  • Mt Batur - Sunrise volcano climb
  • Mt Batur - Hot springs - IDR300000

Today’s driving time is approximately 3 hours.

The summit trail starts more easily, while heading to the crater it climbs steeply with switchbacks over volcanic rocks and gravel. A good level of fitness is required. The path can be slippery, particularly after rain so good shoes are essential. Please bring your headtorch and a warm layer to wear at the summit. The climb may be cancelled during heavy rain and unsafe conditions.

Explore a traditional market in the morning first and then enjoy a day of snorkelling amongst Menjangan Island’s coral reef, part of the Bali Barat National Park. On the way back from your undersea adventures, you’ll stop for a soak at Banjar Hot Springs, a small spring popular with locals. In the afternoon, stop in to enjoy a tasty cup of coffee with a difference at Global Kafe, a diner whose profits support the Global Village Foundation, providing wheelchairs and mobility aids for people with disabilities and assisting those with illnesses with their medical costs. Tonight, head to Ibu Wayan's to learn about Balinese cuisine before sitting down to a home-cooked meal.

  • Lovina - Banjar Hot Springs
  • Lovina - Global Kafe Visit
  • Lovina - Menjangan Island Reef snorkeling tour
  • Lovina - Seririt Market visit
  • Lovina - Yoga class - IDR120000

You will travel 1.5 to 2 hours by road (each way) and then take a boat ride of around 20 mins into the National Park at Menjangan.

After a storm or erratic weather there can be a problem with rubbish in the water around Menjangan, and also throughout Bali's coastal areas. Intrepid does not support dolphin-watching trips as an optional activity, as there is little regulation of this activity. Previous travellers have raised concerns over many motorised boats pursuing dolphin pods.

This morning we’ll wave goodbye to Lovina and make our way to Sanur. Along the way, we’ll visit Gitgit waterfall and Lake Bratan before continuing to Sanur to enjoy some free time in the afternoon. Perhaps, enjoy a stroll along Bali's first beachfront walk, watch the fishermen in the shallows or kick back and relax at one of the beachside restaurants. Get a feel for the traditions and local customs which are well maintained here. Ancient temples are also easily accessible – just a short distance away from the beach.

  • Bedugul - Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple
  • Gitgit - Waterfall walk

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, yogyakarta – the journey’s beginnings.

Yogyakarta possesses the heart of the island of Java, central to artistic heritage and Javanese language. Customs continue unadulterated, protected by the sultan, whose royal palace retains a deep connection to traditional life. Your flight lands at Adisutjipto International Airport. Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim and escorts you into the wealth of urban life in the center of the city. Malls and cafes mix with archeological attractions. You take the time to settle into your luxurious hotel erected during the colonial era. The interior décor fuses traditional Javanese style with classical European comforts, along with an elegant swimming pool that feels like a private spa and resort.

Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby and takes you to a batik workshop to learn the traditional art. The workshop fills with the aroma of wood shavings and paint. The colors from drying textiles bring rainbow hues to the forefront of the workspace. Your instructor explains the art of producing colored designs by applying wax to the textiles before dying them, leaving parts of the cloth untouched. After a quick demonstration, your instructor hands you some fabric. The cloth is soft in your hands, and the wax is firm but pliable. You find a basic traditional pattern of swirling circles bordered by straight lines, allowing you to create a stunning combination of vibrant colors bursting from the different shapes.

What's Included:

Yogyakarta – Out Amongst the City

In the morning, the aroma of fresh rambutan overtakes the rich scent of freshly brewed Javanese coffee. The exotic fruit reminds you of your tropical location. After breakfast, your local guide meets you at the hotel eager to take you on a private tour of the city’s historical and cultural splendor beginning with the sultan’s palace known as Kraton . The compound was erected in the 18th century, complete with grand chambers set inside a series of surrounding walls. The complex houses up to 25,000 people, containing a marketplace, shops, mosques, and a bustling silver industry. Street vendors sell pineapple and oranges along the outer ring with the innermost group of structures housing the current sultan.

Your guide points out the European flourishes along the interior. However, the exterior design remains a stunning example of opulent Javanese architecture. The connection to heritage is palpable in the city, especially at the heart of the palace complex where elderly statesmen wear traditional Javanese dress. Two sacred banyan trees grow in the northern square, dating back to the days of feudal Java when petitioners in white robes would sit in the trees’ shade hoping to catch the eye of the passing king. You continue to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, displaying thousands of impressive stone carvings.

Surakarta – Shrines and Temples of the past

In the morning, you sip a refreshing cup of Javanese coffee, enjoying the rich flavors of the roasted beans grown and cultivated on an Indonesian island. The accompanying aroma of fresh pineapple creates a surprisingly harmonious combination. Your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby after the meal and leads you to the 9th century Hindu temples at Prambanan. The UNESCO World Heritage Site contains shrines dedicated to the Hindu Trinity, known as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple compound is located less than 10 miles outside of Yogyakarta and was erected as Bandung Bondowoso’s proof of love for Princess Loro Jonggrang. A mystical ambiance sweeps through the stone figures, emanating from the textured towers looming above the grounds.

The temples contain both Shaivite and Buddhist architectural and spiritual elements due to the marriage of two dynasties. You make your way to the Shiva temple to view the outstanding examples of Hindu art. The tower reaches a height of 130 feet tall and houses a collection of statues dedicated to Shiva and Durga, an invincible divinity. The sporadic trees add context to the immense height of the numerous shrines. The three main structures contain bas-reliefs telling the narrative of the epic Bhagavata Purana and Ramayana, carved along the inner balustrades. After exploring the wonders of the temple grounds, you venture to Surakarta, the cultural sister of Yogyakarta, to tour the stunning collection of classical artwork on display in the 18th-century Mangkunegaraan Palace.

Mount Bromo – Along the Scenic Rail

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the pristine elegance of the central kraton . Traditional markets open with colorful exotic fruits shining against mounds of rice. Students from around the world linger in the cafes and sip strong black coffee cultivated in the nearby countryside. After breakfast, you have a private transfer to the train station where you board a first class car for the scenic ride east to Surabaya. The relaxing ride travels along the winding railway, highlighting the emerald and jade hues of the rice paddy fields and tropical forest. Hummingbird trees grow beneath the jungle canopy cast by dark red meranti trees.

White petals stand out along the lower leaves, growing from white orchid trees, which can reach a height of nearly 10 feet tall. The glimpse of the Java rainforest calls to you, radiant with verdant leaves and dense trees, and 650 bird species. Your guide meets you at the Surabaya station and leads you the remainder of the way to the village of Ngadisari, which stands on the foothills of Mount Bromo. Fern trees spread across the slopes. The crisp, cool air replaces the tropical moisture of Solo. Rice fields spread across the lowlands, with distinctly segmented borders. Sporadic homes rise out of the tall grass beneath the lingering trees. The herbaceous scent of the landscape blends with the cooler mountain air beneath the active volcanic peak of Mount Bromo.

Kalibaru – The Thrills of the Countryside

In the morning, wrap your hands around a hot mug of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, allowing the richness from the drink and the warmth of the cup to ease you into dawn. Your guide meets you before sunrise, eager to lead you to the top of Mount Bromo before the sun begins to rise. You step onto a four-wheel-drive jeep ready to ascend the steep slopes. In the darkness, the wind carries a sharp bite. In the absence of a nearby city, the stars sweep across the sky, adding another layer of charm to the secluded region.

You reach the top of Mount Penanjakan, the highest viewpoint in the area at an altitude of nearly 9,100 feet above sea level. The sunlight peeks over the distant horizon, spreading layers of color above the rolling ridges. Beneath you swells a sea of mist. Burnt auburn and red melts into a fading yellow until the clear blue sky returns. The mist below the mountaintops dissipates, revealing radiant greenery. The sun continues to rise into the air as you mount a horse to travel along the less than two-mile distance between Mount Penanjakan and Mount Bromo.

The conical volcanic peak grows as you venture closer. The verdant slopes become rugged hills, paved with loose dirt resembling the landscape of the moon. The peak reaches 7,639 feet above sea level. The arid landscape makes the peaks rising out of the sand resemble Egyptian pyramids with steam puffing out of the fumaroles. Riding on horseback makes you feel like an adventurer in search of the next thrill located inside the caldera of Indonesia’s most active volcano.

Ijen – In the Company of Coffee

In the morning, you wake up in the village of Kalibaru, located on a small hill overlooking the rainforest. The refreshing climate and elevated position make the surrounding landscape perfect for growing cloves and coffee. Outside of your accommodation, you find the air hinted with sweet and enticing spice. After breakfast, you venture to a local coffee plantation to learn about the cultivation of one of Java’s most prized exports. Along the road to the plantation, your guide points out rubber trees and livestock, farmers tending to the rice paddies and villagers returning home carrying buckets of fresh water.

Once on the plantation, your guide leads you along the sloped hills to see the actual coffee plants thriving in the cooler tropical temperatures. The beans resemble berries growing beneath the verdant leaves. They look nothing like the grainy bean you expected to find. The aroma is slightly sweet, and the texture of the crop is a bit waxy between your fingers. At the residence, locals wet and peel the berries, taking away the outer skin before placing the red fruits in drying racks.

Only after desiccation do the beans resemble the coffee you know. Your guide explains that they must first roast the beans to help release the natural flavors of the plant, an important step in any coffee production. At the end of the tour, you find the scent of freshly brewed coffee overtaking the herbaceous aroma of the surrounding trees. You take a small sip of the hot coffee searching for the flavors your guide suggested, such as caramel and cinnamon, natural flavors taken from the soil and uniquely enriching each crop.

Lovina – Stunning Mountaintops to Refreshing Coastline

You wake once again before sunrise, setting out on a guided tour from the base camp at Mount Ijen. The crisp, cold air brushes against your cheeks but your excitement overtakes the elements. Your guide leads you along the trail, stopping sporadically to ensure the flashlights are leading you in the right direction. The adventure is thrilling, lit with meandering headlands, flashlights, and the abundance of starlight twinkling in what remains of the night sky. You use a bamboo staff to help with the steeper sections of the hike, reaching the rim of the caldera after two miles. The rugged rocks rise along the slopes if the caldera’s interior. You traverse the path, holding tightly to the handrails.

The night begins to glow with an ethereal electric blue. The radiance actually stems from flames burning at the base of the caldera. The distinctive color shining beneath the night sky is unlike anything you have ever seen before. The sun rises over the crater and offers a stretch of light to the indigo waters of the lake, which reaches a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. You exit the crater and the view changes from the unique blue flames and glowing water to the verdant hillsides leading you down the mountainside. Your private transfer escorts you to the coastline at which you board a ferry for the welcoming and relaxing Balinese shores at Lovina Beach.

Ubud – On the Temple Edge

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the narrow black sand beaches bordering the smooth stretch of verdant trees bordering the coastline. The tranquil ambiance provides a perfect chance to embrace the colorful combination of the land and sea. The water is warm and inviting. The sand is soft and comfortable beneath the tropical sunlight. Your private transfer meets you at the hotel after breakfast, ready to take you on full-day tailored Bali tours through the central mountains and along the volcanic rim of Mount Batur before reaching the cultural center of Ubud. The road up the mountainside contains thrilling hairpin turns offering views to the emerald terraced rice paddies overtaking the lower hills.

Coconut palms soar into the sky providing scattered shade below. On the edges of the nearby slopes of Mount Agung, you reach the largest and holiest of the Hindu temples in Bali, known as Pura Besakih. The temple sits atop the mountainside at 3,280 feet above sea level. The complex contains 23 separate structures erected over six tiers. Stone dvarapala , guards often taking the shape of demons, flank the stairways, which ascend through the split gate to reach the courtyard of the main temple. The central shrine is dedicated to the holy trinity of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. Flower offerings provide ample color to the stone figures, along with smooth, dyed cloth wrapped around the holy figures.

Ubud – Around the Soul

Fields of green reach the stunning dense forest on the outskirts of Ubud. Pink and white flowers blossom along the frangipani trees. The scent of freshly brewed coffee emanates from the central cafes, and the natural aroma of coconut drifts down from the palm trees. A vibrant rainbow of colors fills the Ubud Art Market. Paintings of traditional ceremonies and the surrounding landscape stand beside handmade beaded jewelry and hand-carved statues. At the heart of town stands the 19th-century Ubud Royal Palace, a landmark of Ubud that connotes regal charm inside Balinese architecture. The grounds also house the dramatic dance performances for which the city is known.

Water lilies bloom on the pond in front of the rising tiered tower of the Taman Saraswati Temple.  Carvings honor the goddess of wisdom and art. At the edge of town, you find the Monkey Forest, a reserve in which three Hindu temples hide beneath the towering trees. Hundreds of macaque monkeys linger along the footpaths and roost in the branches. The lush walkways open to the stone dragon bridge beneath the sounds of rustling leaves and chattering troops. The forest encompasses 30 acres, in which you discover Pura Beji, a temple decorated with dramatic detailed carvings bursting from the walls.

Ubud – The Journey’s Tail End

In the morning, the citrus aroma of pomelo fills the dining room at breakfast. Glints of light fill the windows of Studio Perak, a silversmith workshop outside the center of town. Master tinkerers teach visitors and locals alike the art of crafting the shimmering metal into beautiful works, from necklaces to bracelets using traditional techniques passed down through the generations. The splendor of the city ranges from majestic jewelry to the captivating countryside. When you are ready, your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby and escorts you to Ngurah Rai International Airport with plenty of time to check-in for your flight home.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Itinerary for Ultimate Java and Bali Tour

Arrival jakarta to bogor.

Your adventure begins today as you arrive in Jakarta and transfer to your hotel in Bogor. Bogor was during the Dutch colonial times, called Buitenzorg. Buitenzorg literally means without worry and you’ll come to understand why this title is so fitting! Bogor is a welcomed escape from the metropolis of Jakarta. Located at the foot of the 2,211 m high Gunung Salak, Bogor’s higher elevation also makes its temperature more pleasant than Jakarta’s. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in Bogor.

Explore Kebun Raya

Today you have ample time to visit the world-famous botanical garden: Kebun Raya. This beautiful garden of 80 hectares is home to over 15,000 different plants including 400 different kinds of palms. The grounds wrap around the former presidential palace which is a true sight to behold. A walk through the park leads you along rivers and delicate lotus ponds. At the highest point of the garden lays an atmospheric colonial tea and coffee house where you can enjoy refreshments.

Puncak Pass and Tea Plantations to Bandung

You’ll continue your journey this morning through the beautiful landscape of Java. Via the spectacular Puncak Pass at an altitude of 1,439 meters. Passing several tea plantations and Sawa's, you will soon arrive in Bandung. On the way, you’ll pass through tea plantations as far as the eye can see and can even visit a tea factory along the way! When Bandung was erased in 1920, the plan was to make a modern city, and architects were called from Europe to use the art deco style here for the design of the buildings. There are still some nice examples to be seen. The museum Geologi and the museum Asia Afrika here are both well worth a visit.

Tangkuban Perahu Volcano and Hot Springs

By car, you can get up as high as the crater of the active volcano Tangkuban Perahu. It is beautiful to walk along the rim of the crater of this 2,076m high volcano. Nearby the volcano you can take a relaxing hot bath at the natural hot springs of Ciater.

Cangkuang Temple, Naga and Pangadaran

On the way to Pangadaran, you’ll visit the only temple of West Java, Cangkuang. To get there you need to cross a lake filled with water lilies on a bamboo raft. Further on you can visit Naga, a traditional Sudanese village that still lives a step back in time. Late In the afternoon you will arrive at the small peninsula where Pangandaran is located.

Discover Pangadaran

You have two full days in Pangandaran. On the beach, fishermen get on the traditional manner the fish in. You can laze away on the beach or opt to visit the famous Green Canyon (not included). The small nature reserve Prenanjun has a variety of wildlife such as porcupines, deer, and cheeky monkeys.

Stay in Wonosobo

In the morning you’ll leave the south coast and drive up to the mountains to the city of Wonosobo. Wonosbo lays on the edge of the 2,000 m height situated Dieng Plateau. The night here can be cold thus a sweater can come in handy!

Java’s Temples and Mountain Paths to Borobodur

In the early morning, the mysterious landscape of Dieng is at its best. The oldest Hindu temples of Java appear serene from the mist. A walk down along mountain paths with beautiful views on the slopes and along the vegetable gardens of the farmers is hard on the knees but very pleasant. In the afternoon you will arrive at your unique accommodation located on the complex of one of the largest Buddhist sanctuaries in the world, the Borobodur. A stunning sunset this evening will be the icing on the cake!

Explore Borobudur and Yogyakarta

In the early morning, you can visit Borobudur at its best when it is still quiet as the day visitors have not yet arrived. The morning light is great for photographing this awe-inspiring World Heritage Site of Borobudur. Built-in the 8th century, this stunning artistic and architectural marvel lay undiscovered until 1815. Before you head on to Yogyakarta you will visit the nearby Pawon temple, which is in the middle of a typical village, and Mendut temple with its magnificent statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni.

Mid-day you will continue to Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java.

Free Day in Yogyakarta

Many optional excursions (not included) await you today! Opt to take a city tour with a cycle rickshaw (becak) to explore the Sultan’s Palace which is located in the heart of the old city. The huge palace of the Sultans of Yogyakarta is the centre of a small walled city within the city. Over 25,000 people live within the greater Kraton compound, which has its own market, shops, schools, and mosques. In the evening you opt to attend a performance of the classic Ramayana dance and theatre.

Prambana Temples and Solo

Today you’ll make your way to beautiful Solo, on the way, you will visit the famous Prambanan temples which encompass 224 ruined temples. The Hindu temple complex is of stunning beauty and devoted to the gods Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. You will check-in at the hotel in Solo by midday. In the afternoon you can visit the Sultan Palace. Here a local guide will show you around. At walking distance from the Sultan palace, there is the Batik Museum Danar Hadi. This private museum houses a great collection of excellent Batik, antique and Royal textiles from Java and China etc. A guide will lead you to the 11 rooms with all kinds of Batik. At the end and in the back of the museum you see about 200 people working in a big hall processing the batik textiles using different techniques.

In the evening there are great dining opportunities in the city. Interesting is the town centre where the night market is put up around the Alun Alun- the city centre.

Drive to Malang

You will continue your journey as you make your way to Malang today. Drive time is approximately 8 hours to reach this old colonial city.

Explore Malang and Continue to Bromo

This morning is free to explore charming Malang town at your leisure. In the early afternoon, you’ll ride via Probolinggo to the Gunung Bromo Volcano. Your hotel is in or nearby Cemoro Lawang, situated spectacularly on the edge of the Tengger crater. The ascent of the volcano is usually the highlight of every visit to Java. You can watch the sunset at spectacular Bromo this evening.

Sunrise from Mt Bromo and Continue to Kalibaru

An early rise this morning (4.00 am!) will ensure you have enough time for the jeep ride to the sunrise viewpoint up above. Cross the sea of sand’ and climb 246 steps upwards to the cone of Mt Bromo, and in the morning light you will see smoke rising from the crater; a fantastic view, made even better when the slowly rising sun reveals an amazing moon-like landscape. After this adventure, you head back to your hotel for breakfast and continue to Kalibaru, where you stay the night in beautifully situated bungalows surrounded by coffee, cacao and rubber plantations. Travel time today is approximately 7 hours.

Drive along the north coast of East Java to Banyuwangi today to reach Java’s east coast port. Here you’ll be fascinated by locals diving into the water off high construction poles to fetch the coins dropped into the water by passengers. A short boat journey with the local ferry will then bring you to Bali, the fabled Island of Gods and Demons. Travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Adventures in Lovina

A day with lots of optional activities for you to choose from (not included). If you want to see dolphins, prepare to get up early, and go out on the sea by small boat. Or for excellent snorkelling and diving head to Menjangan (Deer) Island, part of the West Bali National Park. Or take a step back in time and visit the old Colonial houses or the only Buddhist temple there is on Bali. The warm springs of Banjar, finally, are also worth visiting.

Gigit Waterfall and Bratan Mountain Lake

First, you visit the Gitgit Waterfall and proceed on to Bratan Mountain Lake, which is situated at a height of 1,240 meters. The Pura Ulun Danu temple in this lake is said to be home to the Danu goddess, who is responsible for the water distribution to Bali’s many rice terraces. Travel time today is approximately 6 hours.

Fuerza Regida announces Pero No Te Enamores concert tour: How to get tickets, dates

Fresas y beliconas, get ready for another unforgettable Fuerza Regida tour.

The Mexican American band, hailing from San Bernadino, California, announced a 32-date U.S. arena tour produced by Live Nation on Tuesday. Fuerza Regida's Pero No Te Enamores Tour (But Don't Fall in Love Tour) will kick off June 6 in Austin, Texas, at the Moody Center, followed by a June 9 concert in Edinburg, Texas, at the Bert Ogden Arena.

The five-man group, fronted by singer Jesús Ortiz Paz, will also play dates in San Diego, Phoenix, Seattle, San Jose, Las Vegas, San Antonio and Palm Desert. In October and November, Fuerza Regida will head to Mexico for seven shows before returning to the U.S. for its last show in Inglewood, California, at the Intuit Dome on Nov. 16.

Peso Pluma knows you know who he is. How the 24-year-old Grammy winner put Mexican music on the map.

Jesús Ortiz Paz of Fuerza Regida talks Mexican music's global rise

Fuerza Regida's upcoming nationwide tour follows a 2023 full of major accomplishments for the group.

In October, the group released its biggest album to date, "Pa Las Baby's Y Belikeada," which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Latin Albums chart and reached the Top 15 of the Billboard 200. Standout hits from the album include "TQM," "Sabor Fresa" and "Harley Quinn," which each charted on the Billboard Hot 100. "Harley Quinn," a collaboration with Marshmello, became the band's first-ever No. 1 hit on the Latin Airplay chart.

"Pa Las Baby's Y Belikeada" also earned Fuerza Regida a pair of awards — Top Duo/Group and Top Latin Duo/Group — at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards in November.

In a 2023 interview with USA TODAY, Paz spoke about Fuerza Regida leading the movement in expanding the global reach of Mexican music.

"We got into this business six years ago, and there was nothing like it," he said. "So, we're pioneers of this too. It took six years for us because everyone has a different career, but for us, to see Mexican music go global — there are no words. We're up with the rappers, the reggaetoneros. Mexican music's No. 1 right now."

Most recently, the band released its EP, "Dolido Pero No Arrepentido." The album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Regional Mexican Albums chart.

"The goal is to keep on staying on top, and like they say, 'Hard work beats talent.' So, we just don't stop working," Paz added. "And hopefully in the next six years, we're still on top, making global hits and still selling out stadiums and arenas — that's what we wish for, and hopefully it goes down."

When do Fuerza Regida tickets go on sale?

Tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time at livenation.com

Fans can also purchase VIP packages, which may include premium tickets, access to the VIP after-party with band members, soundcheck, a meet-and-greet, a group photo with Fuerza Regida, pre-show VIP lounge access, specially designed VIP gift items and more. VIP package contents may vary. For more information, fans can visit  vipnation.com .

2024 Masters odds, betting favorites: Scottie Scheffler leads with Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka among contenders

Will the best player in the world continue his hot streak, or is there value elsewhere on the masters odds board.

scottie-scheffler-players-tpc-r4-stare-g.jpg

The best time of the year has finally arrived. The 2024 Masters is here with the azaleas in full bloom and Augusta National as pristine as ever, so now, it's time for players to descend on the 18-hole masterpiece with dreams of donning the coveted green jacket come Sunday evening. Some may have better chances than others, but as it stands, every golfer in the field has a chance to make history of their own. Take a look at the Round 1 tee times and groupings set for the Masters this week.

Perhaps no one has a clearer path to victory this year than the 2022 champion, Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 has once again raced through the initial portion of the PGA Tour schedule eyeing his second green jacket in the last three years. Finishing T10 in his defense effort last year, Scheffler hopes a renewed confidence on the greens can lead him back to Butler Cabin. But he will need to fend off a number of big names, including a pair he has not seen on the golf course since the Ryder Cup.

LIV Golf's heaviest hitters in this field include the two men who duked it out on the final day in last year's tournament: Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka. Rahm is looking to become just the fourth man to successfully defend his green jacket -- the first since Tiger Woods in 2001-02 -- while Koepka, with a win, would catch Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino with six major championships and inch one step closer to capturing the career grand slam.

Speaking of that slam, it can't be the Masters if Rory McIlroy's name is not discussed. Now in his 10th attempt to close out the ultimate achievement, McIlroy enters these Masters with mixed expectations. The same can be said for many of the game's best, including 2015 champion Jordan Spieth, two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland and a slew of others. And don't forget that some of the best amateurs in the world are set to take on Augusta National.

Check out CBS Sports' full slate of Masters picks and expert predictions , the nine golfers most likely to win the Masters , plus Kyle Porter's look at why repeating will be a tall task for reigning champion Jon Rahm .

2024 Masters odds

The favorite.

  • Scottie Scheffler: 4-1

Scheffler finds himself in uncharted territory with the shortest odds to win any major since Tiger Woods in 2013. While the comparisons to the 15-time major champion may rub some the wrong way, Scheffler's short price is warranted. He arrives at Augusta National as the clear cut world No. 1 with an ideal runway of two wins and a runner-up result in his last three tournaments. The 2022 champion has yet to finish outside the top 20 in four Masters appearances and has factored on the major stage more often than not since slipping on the green jacket.

Other favorites

  • Rory McIlroy: 11-1
  • Jon Rahm: 11-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 14-1
  • Brooks Koepka: 20-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 201
  • Jordan Spieth: 22-1

This group of golfers has combined for 15 major championships and three Masters titles, but it is the one with the goose egg next to his name who may have the best chance to win this year. Schauffele enters the Masters as the second-best player in the world from a statistical standpoint and with plenty of form in tow. Collecting six top 10s in eight starts this season, Schauffele has flashed on the big stage at the Genesis Invitational and Players Championship to no avail. There's a chance he took those close calls personally and finally rights these wrongs at a place where he found himself in contention in 2019 and 2021. While Schauffele's price has shortened over the last few days, that of McIlroy, Koepka, Matsuyama and Spieth has gotten longer.

  • Joaquin Niemann: 28-1
  • Ludvig Åberg: 33-1
  • Bryson DeChambeau: 35-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 35-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 40-1
  • Will Zalatoris: 40-1
  • Tony Finau: 40-1
  • Wyndham Clark: 40-1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 40-1
  • Justin Thomas: 45-1
  • Dustin Johnson: 45-1

This year's Masters may be the best opportunity in the last 45 years for a debutant to win -- a streak that has lasted since Fuzzy Zoeller broke through in the 1979 Masters. Not only will a reigning major champion, Clark, be among those to make his first Masters start, but so will one of the brightest young talents in the game in Åberg. Clark arrives at Augusta National with a win at Pebble Beach and a pair of runners-up to his name, while Åberg looks like a certified top-10 player in the world. The Swede will also have a chance to become the first player since Keegan Bradley in 2011 to win in his major debut.

Everyone except three players in this group has seen an uptick compared to their Monday price with those being DeChambeau, Finau and Fitzpatrick. Clark has ballooned from 28-1 to 40-1 while Thomas has gone from 35-1 to 45-1.

  • Tommy Fleetwood: 50-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 50-1
  • Cameron Smith: 55-1
  • Shane Lowry: 55-1
  • Cameron Young: 55-1
  • Sahith Theegala: 55-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 60-1
  • Russell Henley: 65-1
  • Si Woo Kim: 65-1
  • Max Homa: 65-1
  • Corey Conners: 70-1
  • Brian Harman: 75-1
  • Jason Day: 75-1
  • Sam Burns: 80-1
  • Patrick Reed: 80-1
  • Adam Scott: 80-1
  • Min Woo Lee: 100-1
  • Akshay Bhatia: 100-1
  • Byeong Hun An: 110-1
  • Denny McCarthy: 110-1
  • Sergio Garcia: 120-1
  • Sungjae Im: 120-1
  • Tiger Woods: 150-1
  • Justin Rose: 150-1
  • Chris Kirk: 170-1
  • Rickie Fowler: 170-1
  • Tom Kim: 170-1
  • Harris English: 170-1
  • Stephan Jaeger: 170-1

There are a number of interesting names listed among those north of 100-1, including last year's runner-up. Mickelson hasn't had much form on the LIV Golf circuit, but that didn't stop him from shooting a final-round 65 and finishing behind only one man in last year's tournament. His magic can never be doubted at Augusta National, and the same goes for Woods. Tiger hasn't been seen since his withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational, but he still has a tournament record in his sights. Tying Fred Couples and Gary Players with 23 straight made cuts at the Masters in 2023, Woods hopes to grab it all on his own this year (and hopefully play four rounds unlike last year).

  • Adrian Meronk: 200-1
  • Kurt Kitayama: 220-1
  • Erik van Rooyen: 220-1
  • Austin Eckroat: 220-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 220-1
  • Sepp Straka: 220-1
  • Thorbjorn Olesen: 250-1
  • Nick Taylor: 250-1
  • Nicolai Hojgaard: 250-1
  • Phil Mickelson: 270-1
  • Adam Hadwin: 270-1
  • Matthieu Pavon: 270-1
  • Jake Knapp: 300-1
  • Eric Cole: 300-1
  • Taylor Moore: 300-1
  • Ryan Fox: 300-1
  • Emiliano Grillo: 300-1

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Masters Tournament in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – It’s not sexy, but I’ve spent too much time trying to rationalize a pick on someone else. At the end of the day, Scheffler was red-hot heading into his 2022 Masters triumph – and he’s playing materially better this time around.
  • Top 10: Ludvig Åberg (+225) – We all know the trends against first-time winners, but they don’t apply to the finish markets. Åberg led the Valero field in SG: Tee-to-Green last week and has all the skills required to contend in his major championship debut.
  • Longshot: Russell Henley (+6000) – The former Georgia Bulldog finished T4 here a year ago and has been known to heat up on the greens from time to time. Two top-5s in his last three starts show signs of promise.
  • H2H: Chris Kirk (-120) over Keegan Bradley – There aren’t a ton of course comps for Augusta National, but there are some undeniable parallels with the terrain of Kapalua. Expect the Sentry champ to play well, having finished T23 here last year, while Bradley has missed three of four cuts entering the week.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Xander Schauffele (+1600) – Look, we all know Scheffler has the chance to take this tournament and run with it but my process of elimination story brought me a winner last year and I’m banking it can do it again. Schauffele is ready to contend again… and you have to be knocking on the door to eventually be let in. Back off my blacklist and into the furnace!
  • Top 10: Sahith Theegala (+320) – I really like Theegala as an outright option here over the next few years. T9 a year ago with a hot finish and another year wiser to his game. He still has more foul balls off the tee than I’d like but if he can get away with those this week he’s a chance.
  • Longshot: Jason Day +6600 – Longshots don’t win the Masters and my campaign to move the threshold to +4000 this week fell on deaf ears (Zalatoris, Finau, Smith…). But how can I not plump for the man who – in his prime – had me declaring he’d win two green jackets in his lifetime? Multiple chances in the past… why not another.
  • Head to Head: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – Lowry’s Tee-to-Green game has been good of late whereas Morikawa is in a ball-striking slump compared to his usual high standards. This is as much a Morikawa fade as anything else.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior Content Manager Golfbet)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – I’ll be that guy. My three finalists were him, Spieth and Schauffele. It came down to who I trusted most to win. And it’s not even close.
  • Top 10: Matt Fitzpatrick (+275) – I’m staying patient and not backing off my support of him. He had the best weekend of anyone in San Antonio and I still feel like he has great golf ahead of him.
  • Longshot: Max Homa (+5500) – I know what you’re thinking. However, name me a player with more talent/star power whose odds are above +5000.
  • H2H: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – I almost picked Lowry for the top 10. Generally plays well here and has been in good form.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Will Zalatoris (+4000) – Beware the hungry dog runs faster. It’s comeback time for the previous major runner-up. He’s come back to good form from his back surgery with a three-game stretch of T13, T2 and T4 earlier in the year. He played with Tiger on Monday and saw how great he looked recovering from his own surgery. Will even talked about the influence Tiger's comeback has had on his own journey. People are sleeping on Zalatoris' comeback because of his MC at THE PLAYERS and T74 in Houston. Augusta will bring something out of him. Zalatoris is ready to be among the top players in the world and will show it this week.
  • Top 10: Bryson DeChambeau (+300) – It’s been four years since he called Augusta National a par 67. He is older and wiser now to say such a thing. DeChambeau's game fits Augusta well and I see him taking a big charge at this championship in a quest to become a two-time major champion.
  • Longshot: Sam Burns (+5500) – The only reason I’m taking him here is that I’ve liked him to win for the past couple of months now and he hasn’t. A wise man once said, “if you like a player to win soon, more likely than not they will”.
  • H2H: Lowry (-110) over Morikawa – Collin’s game is a mystery this year. Most alarming has been his iron play which in past years has been seen as unstoppable. Combo that with the fact that Lowry does like Augusta and is in relatively good form as of late. I’ll take the current form over past success.

Roadmap for JavaScript and TypeScript developers learning C#

  • 1 contributor

C#, TypeScript and JavaScript are all members of the C family of languages. The similarities between the languages help you quickly become productive in C#.

  • Similar syntax : JavaScript, TypeScript, and C# are in the C family of languages. That similarity means you can already read and understand C#. There are some differences, but most of the syntax is the same as JavaScript, and C. The curly braces and semicolons are familiar. The control statements like if , else , switch are the same. The looping statements of for , while , and do ... while are same. The same keywords for class , struct , and interface are in both C# and TypeScript. The access modifiers in TypeScript and C#, from public to private , are the same.
  • The => token : All languages support lightweight function definitions. In C#, they're referred to as lambda expressions , in JavaScript, they're typically called arrow functions .
  • Function hierarchies : All three languages support local functions , which are functions defined in other functions.
  • Async / Await : All three languages share the same async and await keywords for asynchronous programming.
  • garbage collection : All three languages rely on a garbage collector for automatic memory management.
  • Event model : C#'s event syntax is similar to JavaScript's model for document object model (DOM) events.
  • Package manager : NuGet is the most common package manager for C# and .NET, similar to npm for JavaScript applications. C# libraries are delivered in assemblies .

As you continue learning C#, you'll learn concepts that aren't part of JavaScript. Some of these concepts might be familiar to you if you use TypeScript:

  • C# Type System : C# is a strongly typed language. Every variable has a type, and that type can't change. You define class or struct types. You can define interface definitions that define behavior implemented by other types. TypeScript includes many of these concepts, but because TypeScript is built on JavaScript, the type system isn't as strict.
  • Pattern matching : Pattern matching enables concise conditional statements and expressions based on the shape of complex data structures. The is expression checks if a variable "is" some pattern. The pattern-based switch expression provides a rich syntax to inspect a variable and make decisions based on its characteristics.
  • String interpolation and raw string literals : String interpolation enables you to insert evaluated expressions in a string, rather than using positional identifiers. Raw string literals provide a way to minimize escape sequences in text.
  • Nullable and non-nullable types : C# supports nullable value types , and nullable reference types by appending the ? suffix to a type. For nullable types, the compiler warns you if you don't check for null before dereferencing the expression. For non-nullable types, the compiler warns you if you might be assigning a null value to that variable. These features can minimize your application throwing a System.NullReferenceException . The syntax might be familiar from TypeScript's use of ? for optional properties.
  • LINQ : Language integrated query (LINQ) provides a common syntax to query and transform data, regardless of its storage.

As you learn more other differences become apparent, but many of those differences are smaller in scope.

Some familiar features and idioms from JavaScript and TypeScript aren't available in C#:

  • dynamic types : C# uses static typing. A variable declaration includes the type, and that type can't change. There is a dynamic type in C# that provides runtime binding.
  • Prototypal inheritance : C# inheritance is part of the type declaration. A C# class declaration states any base class. In JavaScript, you can set the __proto__ property to set the base type on any instance.
  • Interpreted language : C# code must be compiled before you run it. JavaScript code can be run directly in the browser.

In addition, a few more TypeScript features aren't available in C#:

  • Union types : C# doesn't support union types. However, design proposals are in progress.
  • Decorators : C# doesn't have decorators. Some common decorators, such as @sealed are reserved keywords in C#. Other common decorators might have corresponding Attributes . For other decorators, you can create your own attributes.
  • More forgiving syntax : The C# compiler parses code more strictly than JavaScript requires.

If you're building a web application, you should consider using Blazor to build your application. Blazor is a full-stack web framework built for .NET and C#. Blazor components can run on the server, as .NET assemblies, or on the client using WebAssembly. Blazor supports interop with your favorite JavaScript or TypeScript libraries.

Little Big Town and Sugarland Collaboration on CMT Awards Wasn’t a One-Off: LBT Members Talk Covering Phil Collins for Joint Single, Plus Fall Tour

little big town sugarland joint tour take me home single

For the group’s 25th anniversary, Little Big Town is pouring some sugar on it. Some Sugarland , actually, as the two country groups will be spending some quality time together later this year, in the wake of their joint performance Sunday night on the CMT Music Awards , where they hooked up to sing their newly arranged cover of Phil Collins ‘ 1985 smash “Take Me Home.”

The tour is produced by Live Nation and Sandbox Entertainment, and is billed as Little Big Town with special guest Sugarland, and support from the Castellows. Pre-sales for the Take Me Home Tour will take place throughout this week on the way to a general on-sale Friday at 10 a.m.

There’s a throwback element to the new single and tour, as well as Sunday’s CMTs appearance: The two groups toured together in the late 2000s, and they sang a cover of the Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town” (then joined by Jake Owen as well) on the 2008 show that at the time went under the name of the CMT Flameworthy Awards.

Backstage at Austin’s Moody Center during CMT Awards rehearsals, the four members of Little Big Town sat down to discuss with Variety their feelings about reuniting with their old vocal-harmony pals.

The tour plan preceded choosing which song to do together, says Karen Fairchild. “When we were on the road together years ago, we would really learn songs in the afternoon and then sing ’em,” she recalls. “Like, if we were in Memphis, we’d do ‘Walking in Memphis.’ So it was just something fun that we did on the road. So when this tour was gonna be announced and we were gonna get to do a song, then it was like, what do we do? And this song was Kristian Bush’s (of Sugarland) idea. and then we decided that we should get in the studio, because it sounded so good, and make it our own.”

There’s a more personal, if slightly indirect, connection as well. “We should tell you: Akil Thompson that plays in the band — he’s on keys, but he plays everything — his dad is Chester Thompson. Well, Chester, created the drum part on this. There are so many followers of drummers of just his part on that, on YouTube. So that’s why there’s so many drums out there on the CMTs stage — because Hubert (Payne, the group’s drummer) is channeling his inner Chester Thompson… with Akil sitting next to him. Akil showed us a picture of himself standing side-stage at a Phil Collins concert, watching his dad play on this song, so it’s kind of a full-circle moment for him.”

There is plenty of full circling happening now with the Little Big Town/Sugarland reconnection, which couldn’t have happened that many times in other recent years, since the latter duo’s Jennifer Nettles and Bush have been pursuing solo activities more than band work for the most part.

Says Fairchild, “We used to hang out with them because we went to see them open up for Brooks and Dunn, and we played cards one night, and then we just became fast friends.” Although LBT has been in existence as a unit slightly longer, Sugarland broke big in country first, so she tells a story of Nettles and Bush being helpful as they struggled.

“We ran into them again at a festival, back in the day when we were broke and we didn’t have any gear. The guys were locked down on wired packs and we really wanted to invest in some wireless packs — ad this seems really silly now, but back then that was an important thing; we didn’t have any freedom to move around the stage. Sugarland had just had their first big No. 1 or something. And they bought us wireless packs — gave ’em to us and said, ‘Just pay the kindness forward.'”

Says Westbook, “They were so sweet, and I know they felt like they were investing in in our future and helping us out, because they know what that means.”

“And then they bought us wardrobe cases!” adds Fairchild. “And then we gifted those wardrobe cases to Old Dominion, but they kept our names on there, so the guys had Kimberly, Karen, Phillip and Jimi on their wardrobe cases. They just gave those cases away — I don’t know who they gave the old ones to — but we’re trying to just keep the tradition going.”

As for their collaborating now… four-part harmony is hard enough. Isn’t six-part harmony going to be tougher?

They laugh. There isn’t quite so much of that, in actuality, as usually someone is singing a lead vocal that doesn’t have to fit in with the background parts. “The great thing about that is, there’s so many like ad libs in this song,” Schlapman says. “The rest of us keep the harmonies going while the ad libs also go along, so that’s where the six voices come in really handy.” But, as CMT Awards viewers say, all six members of the two groups got in at least a little lead-vocal time as the song went on.

The concluding night of the tour at Nashville’s big arena will mark the first time Little Big Town has headlined in Music City since a multi-night residency at the Ryman in 2017.

“With COVID, we didn’t plan on staying away that long,” says Fairchild. “But touring in the last few years, we did play there with George Strait, but yeah, we have not headlined anything until this Bridgestone show coming up. And that’s gonna be the last night of the tour. So it’s gonna be a party.” Chimes in Schlapman: “Katy-bar the door.”

After the CMTs, Fairchild was trying to figure out how to stick around Austin long enough to get in some vintage clothes-shopping, as is her habit when visiting the city. “This is one of my favorite places to shop, and I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to do that because they have us pretty busy. The vintage shopping here is phenomenal. I could stay and watch the eclipse, I guess, and shop.”

It’s suggested that she could shop in the dark, during the blackout. “She brought a headlamp,” quips Westbrook.

“Spelunking?” says Fairchild. “No, shopping.”
