The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has produced 18 solo albums across his six-decade career, earning eight Grammy Awards, a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a National Medal of the Arts along the way. Prolific singer-songwriter John Hiatt and his backing band, The Goners, join Guy for a one-in-a-kind collaboration. Lauded by The Los Angeles Times as “one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years,” Hiatt has produced 22 albums, earned ten Grammy nominations, and won the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. Twin Cities Arts Reader

Arts and lifestyles. incisive. insightful. exciting. exquisite., review: “damn right, i’ve got the blues” buddy guy and john hiatt & the goners (mystic lake).

john hiatt buddy guy tour

Clockwise from upper-left: musicians Sonny Landreth, Buddy Guy, John Hiatt, and Marty Sammon were part of the lineups for a double-bill concert at Mystic Lake on Sunday evening.

It was an amazing night at Mystic Lake to appreciate the under-appreciated, as John Hiatt shared the bill with Buddy Guy.

Hiatt is a songwriter’s songwriter, with works performed by everyone from Three Dog Night to Willie Nelson to Bob Dylan to Chaka Khan.  It is perhaps emblematic of his career that he is an 11-time Grammy nominee, but has yet to win. However, those in the field know him well: Hiatt’s industry association honors include a Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting award from the Americana Music Association and a BMI Troubadour award; he is also in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

john hiatt buddy guy tour

Last night, Hiatt appeared backed by his band The Goners, with David Ranson on electric bass, Kenneth Blevins on drums, and another underappreciated musical treasure: slide guitar specialist, Sonny Landreth. (Landreth did a solo show at The Dakota just a few months back). Among the familiar songs of the set were “Feels Like Rain” (best known from Buddy Guy’s version) and “Thing Called Love” (best known from Bonnie Raitt’s version – she will be at The Ledge Amphitheater later this week).

Hiatt carried a wide grin, even when singing his songs about loss and heartache. Like pretty much every musician one sees in concert these days, he is (as he told the audience) just thrilled to be playing live events again. Hiatt’s set also included “Slow Turning” (the only Hiatt song to chart with Hiatt’s own performance), and other Hiatt classics as “Memphis in the Meantime”, “Tennessee Plates”, and “Have a Little Faith in Me”. Sonny Landreth also took a turn on the microphone to do his powerful “Congo Square” (see this classic video of his playing that song a decade back, with the help of Derek Trucks).

john hiatt buddy guy tour

It may seem strange to say that Buddy Guy, an 8-time Grammy award winner and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is under-appreciated, but Guy has always bemoaned the lack of radio play for the Blues songs he loves, and how it took the Rolling Stones to force (white) clubs and music programs to include the classic Blues players he grew up idolizing and imitating. This is a tip-of-the-iceberg anecdote: Guy and the Stones actually had a great mutual appreciation – just see the joy in Guy’s interaction with both Mick Jagger and Keith Richard when performing “Champagne and Reefer” . It was a story he repeated again during his set, while otherwise maintaining the mischievous showman persona he has perfected over the decades.

Guy also gave full value to the expected classics – songs like:

  • “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues”,
  • “Hoochie Coochie Man” (which he introduced by saying, “I’m going to play something so funky you can smell it”),
  • “She’s Nineteen Years Old”,
  • “I Just Want to Make Love to You”,
  • “Grits Ain’t Groceries”,
  • “Downhearted”,
  • “Take Me to the River”,
  • “Slippin’ In,” and
  • a finish with the anti-racism anthem “Skin Deep”.

As always, Guy had a solid back-up band, featuring the great Marty Sammon on keyboards.

Those who had seen Guy many times before knew what to expect:  wonderfully flamboyant outfits, famous guitar riffs (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton from Cream) played with a drum stick on the guitar, going out into the audience during a song, creativity with feedback and one-arm guitar work, and so on. Like every other Buddy Guy show, it all worked marvelously well. This is astonishing for any performer, but especially for one who will turn 86 years old next week.

Buddy Guy released his latest studio album Born To Play Guitar on July 31, 2015 via Silvertone/RCA Records, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart. The follow-up to his 2013 first-ever double disc release, Rhythm & Blues, which also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart, Born To Play Guitar was produced by GRAMMY Award winning producer/songwriter and Buddy’s longtime collaborator Tom Hambridge. The release features guest appearances by Van Morrison, Joss Stone, Kim Wilson and Billy Gibbons.

These many years later, Buddy Guy is a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution. He keeps looking to the future of the blues through his ongoing work with his 18-year-old protégé, Quinn Sullivan.

John Hiatt – One of the best and most respected songwriters of his generation, John Hiatt was a hero among critics and his fellow musicians long before a larger audience discovered his work as a recording artist. Known for lyrics that can turn from acidic wit to bitter self-examination at a moment’s notice, Hiatt’s work is also dominated by strong, engaging melodies that take rock and blues tropes and reshape them into fresh sounds and the sharp but thoughtful report of his voice.

Sunday at the Rose: John Hiatt joins forces with Buddy Guy on tour

John Hiatt performs with blues legend Buddy Guy at the Rose Music Center at The Heights on Sunday, July 31.

In the years leading up to the coronavirus pandemic, John Hiatt’s tour schedule was reduced to about 50 dates annually. The Indiana native, performing with blues legend Buddy Guy at Rose Music Center at The Heights on Sunday, July 31, has increased the number of shows since returning to the road in late 2021.

Last year, Hiatt toured with the Jerry Douglas Band, his collaborators on his most recent album, “Leftover Feelings” (2021). The Americana artist has more than 80 concerts in 2022. Hiatt is touring with his band the Goners, including these dates with Guy. After that, he has a solo tour with Lyle Lovett.

Hiatt, who turns 70 on August 20, recently answered some questions by phone during a six-day break from touring.

Q: Why did you increase the number of shows in 2022?

A: I wanted to make this a year of touring. My 70th birthday present to myself was to go out and commune with the audience. To me, that’s the ultimate reason we make music. For the last five or six years, I’ve slowed down to maybe 50 dates a year as opposed to 150 to 200. Then, of course, the pandemic stopped us all and left us in a sudden lurch. I went back out last year and did 45 shows with the Jerry Douglas Band. We were touring behind our record “Leftover Feelings.” This year, I called my manager and said, “How about we get the Goners back together and do a little rock ‘n’ roll tour?” I haven’t played with them in four years, so we decided to book these shows. All together, it’s about 40 shows. I’m going out for another 35 with Lyle Lovett in the fall so it’s a busy year.

Q: What makes Buddy Guy and John Hiatt a good concert pairing?

A: Buddy is pretty unbelievable. I like to think I try to deliver as much as he delivers when he plays live. I’m not the guitar whiz he is because, man, he’s amazing. The last time we played with Buddy was on a BB King tour back in the mid-2000s and it was amazing. He’s amazing. We had a blast. He’s a lovely guy and such a great musician, songwriter and singer. It’s an honor to be on this tour with him. He’s unbelievable. I saw him at the tail end of last year. We got together in the studio and recorded a song of mine together. I don’t know when or how it’s going to come out but, hopefully, eventually, that will see the light of day.

Q: What was your introduction to Buddy Guy’s music?

A: I discovered Buddy when I was about 20. Like a lot of guys my age, it was the album Buddy did with Junior Wells over in the UK. It’s amazing. I still listen to it today, it’s so good. I had heard of Buddy before that. I knew he was in Eric Clapton’s little book of great blues guitar players. I had heard a song here and a song there but that record he did with Junior was the one me and all my buddies brought home at the same time.

Q: You mentioned ‘Leftover Feelings.’ What appealed to you about that project?

A: I loved making that record. Jerry has a young band and, of course, they’re all consummate musicians. It was a different world for me. They’re trained players and I’m very primitive in my approach. Three chords and an axe to grind is pretty much my milieu. Touring with them was great. Audiences really seemed to appreciate what we were doing. I love Jerry and I have no doubt we’ll play together again.

Q: What’s the plan for your next album?

A: I don’t know what’s next. For me, it’s fun to try different stuff with each record. That’s the exciting thing. It’s what I like to do. That was sort of my mindset from early on just because I like so many different kinds of music. I’ve always admired artists willing to try on something new. David Bowie springs to mind as someone who never let his previous successes be a burden to his creative adventurousness. To me, the excitement of making records is hearing what a particular group of musicians can do with the songs. I’ve got about enough songs to put to some musicians and a producer. When we’re off in the wintertime, we’ll try to record them. I’m looking forward to that but right now we’re focused on performing. I can’t wait to go fill the cup with that wonderful sense you get when you make music with an audience. It’s kind of a communion and that was missing in my life when we couldn’t perform. The audiences have been great. People are excited to hear music.

Q: What are you doing to manage the increased number of dates?

A: You develop this life of coming and going that involves certain protective measures when you’re on the road to take care of yourself, mentally, physically and spiritually. When you’ve toured as much as I used to, when you’re home, a good deal of that time is dedicated to restoring the burn out nerve ends, basically. That’s a hard cycle to break and I’m sure most touring musicians would agree with me. They finally started doing some studies on just how much wear-and-tear there is on touring musicians and how much you pay for what you do, in terms of your physical and mental health. It still seems a glamorous life, but people are finally admitting it does take a toll on you.

Q: Why keep doing something so grueling?

A: The fact is, we love the music we make. The other 22 hours can be challenging but we get to be kids for two hours. That’s the wonderfulness of the job. I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. It’s still the greatest job in the world.

The title of Buddy Guy's latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist's eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015's “Born to Play Guitar,” showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. And it only takes one listen to “The Blues Is Alive and Well” to realize that Guy's mission has been more than accomplished here. The record is arriving on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 83-year-old performer: at the 2016 Grammy Awards, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honoring “Born to Play Guitar,” and that same year he hit the road for a U.S. tour opening for Jeff Beck.

John Robert Hiatt is one of America’s most respected and influential singer-songwriters. Since the release of his 1974 debut, “Hangin’ Around the Observatory,” rarely has more than a year or two passed without a new Hiatt collection hitting the shelves. Since 2000, he’s been on a remarkable late-career run, releasing nine acclaimed studio albums and embarking on numerous tours in the U.S. and abroad.

Buddy Guy offers lesson in the blues, with Indianapolis native John Hiatt supporting

john hiatt buddy guy tour

Seconds after Buddy Guy walked across the Indianapolis stage Wednesday night, a tan Fender Stratocaster began to weep.

It was the sound electric guitars were created to make, played by a man born in the same decade they were invented.

For 75 minutes, Guy, clad in blue overalls and a black baseball cap and just three days from his 86th birthday, gave his audience at TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park an entertaining, historical and profane lesson in the blues. He shared stories and scolded the crowd for singing incorrectly.

But mostly, he just shredded.

Indianapolis native son John Hiatt shared the bill and played a decent set to open the night, but Guy stole the show.

"If you don't like the blues," Guy said after his opening number, "you at the wrong f---ing stage tonight."

More: Chris Stapleton puts on astonishing show for sellout crowd at Ruoff Music Center

This drew gut laughter, from me and most of the few thousand people in attendance. It was the first of many. He did not used to curse like this, Guy explained. It all started after hip-hop was invented.

It ended up being a fair warning.

Guy played a few complete songs and jammed through a few more, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the performance was a guided tour through the history of the blues.

In addition to his own works, Guy played snippets of various legends' songs in their style — from Muddy Waters and BB King to the rockers Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

He weaved in stories about the world's obliviousness to the borrowing of blues music by younger, typically white stars.

"Hound Dog," he explained, was a Big Mama Thornton song years before Elvis recorded it.

He said the Rolling Stones were once asked to perform on a TV show. The band said it would appear if Waters could come, too. The Stones, who are named after a Waters song, were then asked by the TV show who Waters was.

Guy said British rock helped bring recognition to American blues artists. He mentioned Rod Stewart, who headlined a show at Ruoff Music Center just a few weeks ago, as an example, along with Clapton.

"When I came to Europe in 1965, Rod Stewart was my valet," he said, drawing more laughter.

Guy grew up on a farm in Louisiana, the son of sharecroppers with no electricity or running water. He came to Chicago at 21, he explained, and regularly played Gary in the '50s. He remembers the steel mills that used to run day and night.

The lessons ended with an excellent rendition of "Skin Deep," a Guy track that also touches on his lived history:

A man in LouisianaHe never called me by my nameHe said "boy do this and boy do that"But I never once complainedI knew he had a good heartBut he just didn't understandThat I needed to be treatedJust like any other man

But the eight-time Grammy winner also proved he wasn't ready to become history just yet — thrusting his hips and deploying guitar tricks as he moved across the stage. He smacked his guitar with a drumstick, used his sleeves and played one-handed.

More: Black Keys mix Delta blues, 'Midwestern basement' rock at stellar Ruoff show

It was old-school, with Guy yelling out a key, and the band starting right up. A swift hand gesture signaled the stop.

He played only one guitar, which he quickly tuned himself between songs. The keyboardist and another guitarist took solos at Guy's signal.

Hiatt's performance was quite different. It had the vibes and look of your dad's disposable income-funded garage band, though the musicianship was more than a few notches higher.

The audience sat and nodded along with Hiatt, while Guy had the same people up and laughing.

Hiatt ran through his catalog highlights, including good renditions of hits "Memphis in the Meantime" and "Have a Little Faith in Me."

"Thank you for having a little faith in me for all these years," he told the crowd. "You can take the boy out of Indiana, but you can't take the Hoosier out of me."

His backing group, the Goners, featured slide guitarist Sonny Landreth.

They were fine, but the set dragged on a bit. Hiatt and the Goners had about 45 minutes of good, entertaining stuff in them, but they played for 75 minutes.

Overall, it was a solid night of shuffling blues and rock. The weather held up nicely, and down by the river is traditionally a good spot for a blues lesson.

Buddy Guy and John Hiatt & the Goners Featuring Sonny Landreth

Multi-Grammy Award winning blues icon Buddy Guy and ten-time Grammy-nominated americana/folk/blues collective John Hiatt & the Goners featuring Sonny Landreth will hit the road together this year. The duo will stop in Cincinnati, OH at Taft Theatre on Saturday, July 30.

The title of Buddy Guy 's latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well . The legendary blues artist's eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015's Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. A truly restless and energetic performer, The Blues Is Alive and Well is the latest triumph in an already-legendary career.

And even as Guy pushes forward with his astounding career, he's careful not to forget his late contemporaries who inspired him along the way. "I went to sleep yesterday and woke up and all the great blues players are no longer with us. Muddy, Wolf, B.B.—they're all gone. Before they passed away, when they were in their prime, we used to have a drink and a laugh and talk about how when one of us is gone, the others have to keep it going. I'm trying to do something to keep this music that I love so well alive." And with The Blues Is Alive and Well , it's clear that the music—and Guy himself—isn’t going away anytime soon.

John Robert Hiatt is one of America’s most respected and influential singer-songwriters. “You know how writing goes for me,“ John Hiatt says, offering a glimpse into his creative process. “I get a couple of lines going, and then I just tag along as the songs start to reveal themselves. Can’t Stop the Blues (or Rock): Legends Buddy Guy, John Hiatt power through interruption

Thursday’s passing storm that caused temporary evacuation of the Meijer Gardens amphitheather didn’t prevent either seasoned artist from regaling fans with career-spanning selections. The review, photos.

One could say it “Feels Like Rain” but “Blues Don’t Care.”

Those song titles from the extensive catalogs of legendary bluesman Buddy Guy and Heartland rocker John Hiatt would aptly describe Thursday night’s rain-interrupted show at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

In the end, the sold-out show brought enough rock and blues to get people on their feet and keep the impending storm at bay.

Opening act John Hiatt & the Goners wasted no time warming up the crowd for the blues icon.

Hiatt, 69, and his band rocked the little bit of rain away with a hard-hitting set list, including “Your Dad Did,” “The Tiki Bar is Open” and of course, “Feels Like Rain.”

His set consisted of many originals and songs he wrote for other artists including Bonnie Raitt and the night’s headliner.

Even Hiatt’s renowned lead guitarist, Sonny Landreth, took time to do one of his own songs and belt out some Louisiana blues and rock riffs before leaving Hiatt by himself for a tune and the final song and encore.

The rain held off just in time for Hiatt to finish his encore before venue staff instructed concert patrons to evacuate the amphitheater and return to their cars. The passing thunderstorm washed over the parking lot as the stage was changed over, with everyone eventually returning for Guy’s set.

Guy welcomed the crowd back as the rain parted, with the 85-year-old guitarist delivering crowd favorites such as Muddy Waters’ “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Take Me to the River,” “Skin Deep” and “Feels Like Rain” as an attempt to crack jokes at the weather.

The rest of his set saw Guy slap and pound his guitar with rags, drum sticks and more, ripping solos as if he was never not in his prime. Solo after solo and stage antic after stage antic had the crowd cheering, dancing and singing along all night.

At one point, he even broke a string and handed it to one of the few kids in the crowd. This was all before an up-close-and-personal finish, with Guy marching through the crowd playing his ’57 Stratocaster.

All-in-all, the evening brought Louisiana to Michigan and traditional blues to Beer City.

Next Up at Meijer Gardens: America, with opener Rachel Brooke, perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday (July 27). Tickets available here .
