Junior Adventure Tour

We are a family tour with two kids aged 9 and 12. Whilst this tour is probably mostly aimed for slightly younger children we wanted a fast-paced tour that would engage the kids, rather than a standard tour. The tour guide Alex was brilliant, he included and engaged kids of all ages (from 5 - 60) and certainly kept it fast and interesting and involved and amused even our hard to please 12 year old. This tour does not give lots of detail or facts and statistics; it gave us a fun introduction to and feel for the Opera House in a small group and included access to limited areas, fun interaction, stickers, dressing up and lasted I think about 40 mins to an hour, which was perfect. Perfect for fairly fit youngsters and those young at heart. I would definitely recommend this tour for families with primary school-aged kids.

Iconic landmark in Sydney. Unfortunately, we were only passing through Sydney, so didn't have time for a full visit, and just walked around the outside of the building. However, it was very impressive to get a close up look. What I wasn't expecting was the buzz on the walkway below the Opera House - lots of bustling restaurants, all with views of Sydney Harbour. Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to return sometime.

Great to see a classic Italian opera here. Row F seating (stalls) in the Joan Sutherland Theatre was good for viewing and not the premium price. A little distracting having to shift focus from the stage to the surtitles to understand what they were singing about. Great experience - go to the opera bar for dinner and a few drinks before hand.

Amazing place to visit. Very busy so ideally go early in the morning after reserving a place at the outdoor restaurant

We were shown around by Paul. What a fantastic building and it was great to see the video on its history and hear from Paul how it was built. We could have spent hours here, the architecture is stunning and to see the sails and the tiles that cover them is a must do thing. We went on the 10.00 tour and it was quiet when we arrived, by lunchtime the cafe and restaurant were extremely busy and we struggled to find a seat.

Tours inside are about $37. The outside was awesome. Seeing it in pictures isn't the same as actually being here. Getting to go inside is a totally wonderful experience. Book ahead of time.

Adventure, baby!

The Best of Sydney for Kids: The Sydney Opera House Day Pack

Since we moved back to Sydney, I’ve taken enormous pleasure in rediscovering my hometown with a child. I grew up in Sydney’s south-west, where most of my childhood was spent riding my pony, or biking around the streets with my brother. A far cry from the way we spend time with Cheese as an inner city kid!

We’ve been to the Sydney Opera House to see shows on many occasions. They are always of a high quality, and are a highlight of our year. We even attended the Sydney Opera House open day a few months back, where the House was open to the public. While it was interesting seeing the House behind the scenes, it was very crowded, and we left pretty quickly as Cheese wasn’t enjoying it.

So I was thrilled to discovered that the House has this amazing offering called their Day Pack at the moment, which offers families a Junior Lunch at Opera Kitchen, a special behind the scenes tour of the House on the Junior Adventure, finishing up with a show.

Each Day Pack has a different itinerary, depending which one you choose. They all meet in the same spot, at the Welcome Centre at the Sydney Opera House. You can find this by taking the escalators down from the boardwalk, then walking past the Opera House Bar and Kitchen until you get to the souvenir shop. Look for a sign here, where your guide for the day will be waiting for you.

Our amazing guide was a vibrant, energetic woman named Suanne. She was made to work with children, without a doubt. My daughter loved Suanne. I loved Suanne! Cheese was the youngest on the tour (the average age was about 8), but Suanne managed to keep the interest of all the kids, from little Cheese to the oldest, who were tweenagers, and even earned herself a hug or two along the way.

Our first stop on our big adventure was lunch at Opera Kitchen. We had a fantastic seat overlooking the Sydney harbour, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background. I mean, seriously?! I can’t even describe the beauty of our city on days like this, it’s just too much.

We chose the Quinoa, Beetroot, Feta & Macadamia Salad (served with your choice of house beer, wine or soft drink) for me, and the Junior Fish & Chips (served with a small soft drink or juice and ice cream) for Cheese. I appreciated that the food was served quickly for a busy day.

Cheese loved her fish – it was lightly crumbed, nice and hot, and not oily at all. She had two dipping sauces and a lemon wedge to dress her meal with, much to her delight. My salad was enormous, but since it had a lot of lettuce in it, it ended up being the perfect sized portion for lunch, and not too heavy for someone who was about to to a lot of walking afterwards.

After lunch we grouped together, ready for what I was most excited for – the tour. Suanne made it very clear that the tour was for the kids, not the adults, and had the kids all put their hands in and give our a big cheer “Kids!!”. As their voices vibrated around the concourse, the air filled with excited giggles as the kids loosened up, and thus, the tone was set for our tour. Lots of fun, plenty of laughs, and an extremely energetic look at one of the world’s most iconic buildings.

Our leader Suanne led the kids up the stairs, with us adults struggling to keep up in the rear. Up on the boardwalk, we learned the first of many amazing facts that we would absorb that day – all of which were embarrassingly new to this Sydney native. The Sydney Opera House was designed by Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect, after winning a contest in 1957. I only remember the name thanks to Suanne’s entertaining pronunciation for the kids: “Yaaaaw Boots on”. Very effective.

While the Sydney Opera House is only 58 years old, the land it is built on, Bennalong Point, has previously been a meeting point for the Gadigal tribe. After paying tribute to the indigenous people whose land we were walking on, we took our first steps into the House, and, after a little actors warm up to get the kids ready to perform, walked into the Studio (sadly no photos allowed today!).

Cheese and I had seen many Babies Proms inside the Studio, but on our tour it was set up for the current show, Blanc de Blanc. While the kids took turns presenting the show to their rapt parents, we also learned that the Opera House was built in such a way that scenery has to be lifted up and down, it can’t be moved in from sides. Because of this unusual design, the Studio was built to be a lift for scenery. Nowadays, however, it is a flexible performance space.

Next on our tour, was another of the 800 rooms inside the Opera House – the backstage area where props are stored. We saw parts of the three opera sets that are housed in the room, including the Magic Flute, and the giant hydraulic lift that takes the props up to the stage.

Suanne paid tribute to the many people who work at the House to create the performances we see, including prop builders and the people who handle the intelligent lights that cost 65K each (geez, wouldn’t want to be anywhere near one of those!).

We wound our way into the next room on the tour, the rehearsal room, where the casts and musicians practice. I couldn’t help but place my hand on the barre too, thinking of all of the amazing ballet dancers who had stood in that very spot, warming up with plies and tendus. The kids all had a turn practicing their moves, including Cheese, who was working on her arabesque.

The tour stepped outside next, through a sneaky exit, where we walked up some more steps (note, do not do this tour if you don’t like steps!) to admire the amazing view, as well as see the reflection in the glass of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, if you look up at just the right angle. What an incredible design.

If you’ve ever wondered why the million tiles of the House always look so clean, and yet you never see anyone actually cleaning them, it’s because they are especially made to be self-cleaning with a special glaze on them.

We waved like royalty to passers by, then ducked back inside another sneaky door to a little amphitheatre filled with costumes once worn by performers at the House. The kids had an amazing time trying them on, taking a bow, and learning about props. As the kids answered questions and participated in the activities, they were awarded with a cute star badge, which they all wore with pride.

The last stop on our tour was the spectacular Concert Hall (sadly no pictures allowed since staff were performing sound checks), home of the symphony orchestra. We sat in some of the 2679 seats and watched the kids try their hand at being their own orchestra so we could hear the noise vibrating around the beautiful white birch wood ceiling. I’d never noticed before that the hall was shaped to mimic a guitar, with its high vaulted ceiling and brush box panelling.

If you’re interested in hiring the hall for a private gig, it will set you back a mere $18K.

After the tour ended (it ran for 60 minutes), Suanne took us to the Playhouse, where we were about to see our show: The 52-Story Treehouse . We arrived just in time to look at our souvenir photos (two are included with the package, with extra costs if you’d like to purchase add-ons) and take our seats.

You can read more about how much we enjoyed The 52-Story Treehouse here .

After the show, we had some time to enjoy the Creative Play station in the Playhouse that is open until the end of January. The current installation is “The Un-Broken Line”, which is basically a massive, interactive digital screen where kids can manipulate colour and lines. It’s pretty addictive play, and really hard to tear the kids away from. With Sydney summer giving us both big storms and brutal heat, it’s wonderful to have an indoor space catering to kids for us to enjoy. You can read more about the free Summer entertainment for families at the House here .

I can’t recommend the Sydney Opera House Day Pack enough, both for tourists and Sydney locals. I guarantee that not only will you and the kids have a fantastic time, but you will all learn some amazing facts about one of the most interesting buildings in the world at the same time.

At time of print, the Day Pack includes: 15% discount on an A reserve show ticket to The 52-Storey Treehouse Explore inside the Sydney Opera House on the Junior Adventure A souvenir photo from your Junior Adventure A delicious Junior Lunch and drink at one of our harbourside, family friendly restaurants.

Price:  Adult: $108.65 Child: $83.65 Check online to get accurate pricing for the Day Packs. As different shows are included in the pack, pricing may change.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

Last updated: 08/04/2020

The Sydney Opera House is one of the biggest symbols not only of the city but also of the country. We have always been curious to know what it was like inside and when we found out that guided tours are offered to visit it, we took advantage of our passage through the city to include it in the itinerary. So, if you are also curious to know a little more about this Australian icon, check out what the Sydney Opera House tour is like.

SYDNEY'S OPERA HOUSE

Built between 1959 and 1973, the Sydney Opera House is a show house located on Sydney Harbour, which has become one of Australia's biggest icons. It was designed by the Danish architect  Jørn Utzon , after your project is selected in a competition.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

The impressive building, in modern expressionist design, is formed by a series of large “shells” of precast concrete. The shells have over 1 million tiles in two different colors: glossy white and matte cream. It is supported on 588 concrete pillars sunk to 25 meters below sea level. In addition to the tiling of the shells and the glass curtain walls of the lobby spaces, the building's exterior is largely clad in aggregate panels composed of pink granite.

MISTAKES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WAY…

However, not everything went perfect during the construction of the Opera House. The innovative project suffered constant delays due to difficulties in getting it off the ground and finding technical engineering conditions. Because of this, the cost of the project has skyrocketed, causing enormous tension between the Australian government and the project team. In 1965, after the Liberal Party's 1965 election, with Robert Askin becoming Prime Minister of New South Wales (Sydney's state), tensions reached a peak.

Utzon was highly reluctant to respond to questions or criticisms from the Sydney Opera House Executive Committee. He was struggling to pay his own staff, and after several threats of dismissal, he was eventually dropped from the project and never personally saw his great masterpiece completed. Only in 1973, the Opera House was inaugurated, with the illustrious presence of Queen Elizabeth II, chief commonwealth . Utzon was not invited to the opening ceremony and his name was not even mentioned.

OPERA HOUSE SHOW ROOMS

The Sydney Opera House is made up of six rooms of shows that host a variety of performances. More of 2000 events are held every year . So something around 40 shows are offered every week ! And these rooms have seen a little of everything, from classical music events to rock concerts, lectures, circus, opera, ballet, theater and much more. It is worth remembering that the outdoor area of the Opera , known as  forecourt , also serves as an outdoor concert venue and has hosted performances by Björk, Sting and many others. Check out what types of shows are shown in each of the Sydney Opera House rooms:

1. CONCERT HALL

Concert Hall is the heart of Sydney Opera House and the largest hall in the complex. With a capacity of over 2,000 seats, this is where orchestra presentations and some contemporary music shows take place. With impeccable acoustics, you can sit around the entire stage. In addition to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, names such as Luciano Pavarotti, Janet Jackson and Prince have performed.

2. JOAN SUTHERLAND THEATER

This theater pays homage to Joan Sutherland, called  'La Stupenda' and the 'voice of the century' for their powerful performances. This is the second largest room in the Opera House, with more than 1,500 seats. The orchestra pit can hold up to 70 songs. It is in this theater that the performances of The Australian Ballet are shown. The venue also hosts music performances, lectures, comedy and contemporary music. Even Yoko Ono is already on this stage.

3. THEATER DRAMA

The Drama Theater is the more intimate of the two theaters in  proscenium, with capacity for 544 people. It is in this theater that plays by the theater company Sydney Theater Co and Bangarra Dance Theater are presented. It hosts two special festivals every year:   “All About Women Festival” and “The Festival of Dangerous Ideas”. Big names like Mel Gibson, Toni Colleti, Geoffrey Rush, and  Sir Ian McKellen.

4. THE PLAYHOUSE

This is a small space, which welcomes  hosts productions for young audiences, dance shows, stand-up comedy and experimental theatrical experiences. It was originally intended for chamber orchestra recitals, but has since been adapted to create a relaxed space for 398 people.

5. THE STUDIO

This room was built for flexibility, changing to meet the needs of different productions. Performances for younger audiences take place during the day and the world's best cabaret and circus acts delight audiences at night. The space can accommodate a maximum of 300 people.

6. THE UTZON ROOM

Sydney Opera House architect Jørn Utzon completed the design of just one of the rooms – now called the Utzon Room.  With only 200 seats, the western wall is adorned with a vibrant tapestry. The ceiling features concrete beams and the east wall is made up of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Sydney Harbor Botanical Gardens. The Utzon Room offers frequent chamber music performances, offering the audience an intimate experience.

TYPES OF TOURS AT SYDNEY'S OPERA HOUSE

Check out all the types of tours offered by the Sydney Opera House. At the end of the post, you will find more information about timetables and prices.

1. THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE TOUR

This is the main tour offered by the Sydney Opera House and seeks to show why the venue is such an inspiring venue. The guides share stories about the building's construction and lots of interesting information since its opening. Some of the various show rooms are visited during the tour. Keep in mind that the tour involves walking up/down about 300 steps and there are no elevators that take you from one concert hall to another. It's possible combine the tour with a meal at the Opera Bar , restaurant located in the Opera House. To do this, buy the specific ticket (more information at the end of the post).

2. TOURS IN OTHER LANGUAGES

Tours at the Sydney Opera House are mostly in English. But, there is also the possibility of doing special tours in other languages. Tour times are available in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French and German . As demand is lower, there are fewer options for days and times. That's why it's worth securing your ticket in advance. In Spanish , there are tours every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 3 pm. For more information, visit the official website and click on the desired language.

3. BACKSTAGE TOURS

This tour is much deeper (and much more expensive) than the conventional Sydney Opera House tour. The objective is to get into the details of the backstage of the show house, with a small group of visitors. Therefore, through it it is possible to discover spaces not normally accessible to the public. The guides promise to share inside secrets and lots of interesting information not easily found elsewhere.

4. JUNIOR ADVENTURE TOURS

Child-focused tours offered only during school holidays. The tour seeks to involve little ones to discover mysterious secrets and unusual facts about the Sydney Opera House. It's packed with interactive activities and games for the whole family. This tour is only suitable for children who are fluent in English.

OUR EXPERIENCE ON THE OPERA HOUSE TOUR

By now you should know that we chose to take tour number 1, the main tour offered on site. We even considered taking the tour + meal combo, but we ended up giving up due to the lack of vegan options on the menu offered by the tour (you can't choose anything from the menu).  Tip: Remember to use the restroom before your start time as there are no stops during the tour.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

BEFORE THE TOUR

We bought our tickets on the internet (the price has a discount of 10%) and, close to the time, we went to the basement where the ticket office is located. Welcome Center . We showed proof of purchase to a ticket clerk, who gave us the tickets. Next to the ticket office is a left-luggage office (it is forbidden to go with large suitcases on the tour). The meeting point for the start of the tour is directly in front of the ticket office. The guide showed up, confirmed our time and started handing out headphones so that we could hear her well along the way. She took us to an elevator (the only one on the entire tour) near the bar “The Lounge” to reach the first level. From there, she started an escalator just for us to go up to the next floor and begin the tour proper.

Our tour started at Playhouse , the small room at the Opera that has a capacity of less than 400 seats. According to our guide, the room was initially built to house a cinema. Currently, a number of varied events are hosted on site. The other smaller venues (The Drama Theatre, The Studio) are very similar to it and therefore not included in the tour. In this room, the guide gave us the first information about the construction of the building, its Danish architect and information about the entire history of the place. We sat in the armchairs of the living room to watch an explanatory video about this whole context. Leaving the room, we were admiring one of the areas that houses a bar that works during the Opera House events period. The architecture is really impressive! We climb the stairs until we reach an area where you can have a wide view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. We couldn't get close to the window because a ballet company cocktail party was taking place.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

SECOND ROOM

Then the guide took us to the concert hall , the biggest, main and prettiest room in the entire Opera. She warned us that we couldn't take pictures because the Symphony Orchestra would be rehearsing. However, when we entered the place, the rehearsal had already ended. So she allowed us to sit in the armchairs and take some pictures of the place quickly. The place is impressive! The room is beautiful, with excellent lighting and a large organ in the center. The chairs are all around the stage, even in the back. We remember the concert we attended at Sala São Paulo, near Luz station in São Paulo, which has incredible acoustics as well. Not that we want to “pull the sardines” to Brazil, but although the Concert Hall is amazing, we still think Sala São Paulo is cooler!

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

Leaving there, we cross to the other side of the Opera and stop at the bar area that is open during events. On a television, the guide showed us a video that showed more information about the construction of the Opera and the difficulties faced to put up something so different and innovative. It is also shown that the Norwegian, “father of the project”, was unable to see his complete work live.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

After the video, we went to visit the third and last room of the tour,  Joan Sutherland Theater , the second largest in the complex. As the ballet company was rehearsing, we couldn't even sit down or take pictures of the place. We sat in silence for a few minutes watching the rehearsal and left. We went down the escalators and our tour ended at the Upper Level. We returned the headphones and headed outside to better observe the architecture before going to lunch.

Visiting the Sydney Opera House: tours and information

IS THE TOUR AT THE OPERA HOUSE WORTH IT?

Yes a lot! The Opera House is one of Australia's greatest symbols! We really enjoyed getting to know it from the inside and getting more information and learning about its history and construction. Even those who go to see a show inside, do not have the opportunity to visit the other rooms. So the tour is very interesting. However, we think that the tour is not recommended for people with limited mobility because, due to its structure, there are no elevators or ramps. According to the guide, there is a project to include elevators in the near future, but it will not be possible to place them on all floors, as the ceiling of the Opera House is totally irregular.

Check out all the options for places (restaurants, bars, kiosks) available to eat and drink at the Sydney Opera House:

July School Holidays Announced at The Sydney Opera House

Learn more about the lineup of events here!

pixeltracker

Roald Dahl 's devilishly disgusting tale The Twits , Flying Fruit Fly Circus' musical variety show Tempo and Creation Creation , a playful new theatre performance exploring life's biggest mysteries, will inspire and entertain audiences these July school holidays as part of the Sydney Opera House's 2022 Children, Families and Creative Learning program.

From Shake & Stir Theatre Co, the team who brought us Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits is a visually-spectacular, revoltingly-funny production that offers big belly laughs for children and adults alike. Based on the iconic book by Roald Dahl , prepare to be delightfully disgusted by this family classic from the wacky mind of the world's no. 1 storyteller, live on stage.

Creation Creation is a comedic form of documentary theatre about life's biggest mysteries. Created by acclaimed children's theatre company Windmill Theatre (Bluey's Big Play), Creation Creation is a hilarious and insightful way for kids and adults to explore the BIG questions - like "is there other life in the universe?" And "how did the world begin?" Two fearless creators step onto the stage and attempt to unravel the mysteries of the universe using their creativity. Blankets become forts, cardboard boxes become battleships and ping pong balls become planets in this hilarious explosion of art, sculpture, and puppetry. There are also exclusive schools performances on Wednesday 29-30 June.

Tempo is the new show from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Australia's national youth circus. Young audiences will be inspired by an ensemble of young performers aged 11 -18 years who will flip, juggle, balance, and dive their way into your hearts. The show follows a highly distinguished musician who has arrived to conduct their latest symphony, but the orchestra is nowhere to be found! Fortunately, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus kids are ready to come to the rescue. An "Inside the Circus" add-on VIP experience takes audiences on a backstage journey into the lives of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.

Make a day of it with our full holiday program at the Sydney Opera House:

  • Hands on Art - get messy! In our free Creative Play this July school holidays in the Western Foyers, professional artists will transform your hands into a work of art using abstract patterns and textures. This event is presented in partnership with our Global Goals Partner Dettol, free with registration;

  • Cardboard Construction - kids aged 10+ are encouraged to unleash their creativity working with recycled cardboard in this workshop inspired by the performance season of Creation, Creation ;

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

  • lenços umedecidos;
  • cremes umectantes, dentre outros.

  • Vermelho e branco;
  • Amarelo e branco.

Preços – um kit higiene safari de porcelana pode ser encontrado em lojas por preços entre R$ 30 e R$ 90. São considerados baratos dada a fragilidade do material, por isso o valor mais baixo em relação a uma customização em MDF.
