Who is Kamala Harris' father? Economist Donald Harris absent from the DNC

Portrait of Margie Cullen

Vice President Kamala Harris  spoke at length about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, during her speech on the final day of the  2024 Democratic National Convention  where she  formally accepted  the Democratic nomination for president.

She explained how  her mother , a “five-foot-tall brown woman with an accent” who came to the U.S. from India at age 19, taught her and her sister, Maya, to “do something” about injustice.

Harris also mentioned her father, Donald Harris,  in her speech , recalling pleasant early childhood memories.

“At the park, my mother would say, “Stay close.” But my father would say, as he smiled, “Run, Kamala, run. Don’t be afraid. Don’t let anything stop you.” From my earliest years, he taught me to be fearless,” she said.

But when Harris was in elementary school, she said, her parents split up.

Sign-up for Your Vote: Text with the USA TODAY elections team.

“It was mostly my mother who raised us,” she said.

According to  Harris’ 2019 memoir , Donald Harris continued to see his daughters during the weekend and summer.

Who is Donald Harris, Kamala Harris’ father?

Donald Harris is a post-keynesian economist  who has written on Marxist theory. He is a retired  Stanford University  professor who has served as an economic advisor to his home country of Jamaica. He also taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In her speech, Harris described her father as a “student from Jamaica” when he and her mother met.

Born in Jamaica, Donald Harris immigrated to the US to complete a doctorate degree at the University of California, Berkeley. That’s where he met Shyamala, who was pursuing  a degree in biochemistry  there.

Was Kamala Harris’ father at the DNC?

Donald is Harris’ only living parent. Shyamala died of colon cancer in 2009.

But he was absent from the Democratic convention this week, as he has largely been from his daughter’s political life in general. He hasn’t weighed in on her political career since 2019, when he criticized a comment she made about whether she’s smoked marijuana before.

“Half my family’s from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?” Harris had said.

Donald Harris responded  in a statement to Jamaica Global Online, saying that his grandmothers and parents “must be turning in their grave right now” to see their Jamaican identity being connected to “the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker.”

Harris’ campaign did not issue a response at the time.

Doug Emhoff, Maya Harris; Kamala Harris' family at the DNC

While Donald Harris didn't appear at the Democratic convention, many other members of Harris' family were there.

They included her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff , her sister Maya Harris , her stepchildren Ella and Cole Emhoff , and nieces and nephews Meena Harris, Alexander Hudlin, Jasper Emhoff, and Arden Emhoff.

Maia Pandey of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel contributed to this report.

Stranded Boeing Starliner astronauts will not return home until 2025, NASA says

C APE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA decided Saturday it’s too risky to bring two astronauts back to Earth in Boeing’s troubled new capsule, and they’ll have to wait until next year for a ride home with SpaceX. What should have been a  weeklong test flight  for the pair will now last more than eight months.

The seasoned pilots have been stuck at the International Space Station since the beginning of June. A cascade of vexing thruster  failures and helium leaks  in the new capsule marred their trip to the space station, and they ended up in a holding pattern as engineers  conducted tests and debated  what to do about the flight back.

After almost three months, the decision finally came down from NASA’s highest ranks on Saturday. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will come back in a SpaceX capsule in February. Their empty Starliner capsule will undock in early September and attempt to return on autopilot with a touchdown in the New Mexico desert.

As Starliner’s test pilots, the pair should have overseen this critical last leg of the journey.

“A test flight by nature is neither safe nor routine,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. The decision “is a result of a commitment to safety.”

Nelson said lessons learned from NASA’s two space shuttle accidents played a role. This time, he noted, open dialogue was encouraged rather than crushed.

“This has not been an easy decision, but it is absolutely the right one,” added Jim Free, NASA’s associate administrator.

It was a blow to Boeing, adding to the safety concerns plaguing the company on its airplane side. Boeing had counted on Starliner’s first crew trip to revive the troubled spacecraft program after years of delays and ballooning costs. The company had insisted Starliner was safe based on all the recent thruster tests both in space and on the ground.

Boeing did not participate in Saturday’s news conference by NASA, but released a statement: “Boeing continues to focus, first and foremost, on the safety of the crew and spacecraft.” The company said it is preparing the spacecraft “for a safe and successful return.”

Rand Corp.’s Jan Osburg, a senior engineer who specializes in aerospace and defense, said NASA made the right choice. “But the U.S. is still left with egg on its face due to the Starliner design issues that should have been caught earlier.”

Wilmore, 61, and Williams, 58, are both retired Navy captains with previous long-duration spaceflight experience. Before their June 5 launch from Cape Canaveral, Wilmore and Williams said their families bought into the uncertainty and stress of their professional careers decades ago.

During their  lone orbital news conference  last month, the astronauts said they had trust in the thruster testing being conducted. They had no complaints, they added, and enjoyed pitching in with space station work.

Wilmore’s wife, Deanna, said she and their daughters, along with family and friends, “were praying for a safe return on whatever spacecraft that may be.” While they are disappointed that he will be away longer, “we know that it’s the Lord’s plan,” she said via text.

Flight operations director Norm Knight said he talked to the astronauts Saturday and they fully support the decision to postpone their return.

There were few options.

The SpaceX capsule currently parked at the space station is reserved for the four residents who have been there since March. They will return in late September, their routine six-month stay extended a month by the Starliner dilemma. NASA said it would be unsafe to squeeze two more into the capsule, except in an emergency.

The docked Russian Soyuz capsule is even tighter, capable of flying only three — two of them Russians wrapping up a yearlong stint.

So Wilmore and Williams will wait for SpaceX’s next taxi flight. It’s due to launch in late September with two astronauts instead of the usual four. NASA is yanking two to make room for Wilmore and Williams on the return flight in late February.

NASA said no serious consideration was given to asking SpaceX for a quick stand-alone rescue. Last year, the Russian Space Agency had to rush up a  replacement Soyuz capsule  for three men whose original craft was damaged by space junk. The switch pushed their six-month mission to just over a year.

Former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, applauded the decision via X: “Good to err on the side of caution for astronaut lives.” Long missions are “what astronauts work their entire career for. I’d take it in a heartbeat!”

Starliner’s woes began long before its latest flight.

Bad software fouled the first test flight without a crew in 2019, prompting a do-over in 2022. Then parachute and other issues cropped up, including a helium leak in the capsule’s propellant system that nixed a launch attempt in May. The leak eventually was deemed to be isolated and small enough to pose no concern. But more leaks sprouted following liftoff, and five thrusters also failed.

All but one of those small thrusters restarted in flight. But engineers were perplexed by ground testing that showed a thruster seal swelling and obstructing a propellant line. They theorized the seals in orbit may have expanded and then reverted to their normal size. Officials said the results marked the turning point, as their concerns grew.

With all the uncertainty about how the thrusters might perform, “There was too much risk for the crew,” Steve Stich, NASA’s commercial crew program manager, told reporters.

These 28 thrusters are vital. Besides needed for space station rendezvous, they keep the capsule pointed in the right direction at flight’s end as bigger engines steer the craft out of orbit. Coming in crooked could result in catastrophe.

With the Columbia disaster still fresh in many minds — the shuttle broke apart during reentry in 2003, killing all seven aboard — NASA made an extra effort to embrace open debate over Starliner’s return capability.

Despite Saturday’s decision, NASA isn’t giving up on Boeing. Nelson said he is “100%” certain that Starliner will fly again.

NASA went into its commercial crew program a decade ago wanting two competing U.S. companies ferrying astronauts in the post-shuttle era. Boeing won the bigger contract: more than $4 billion, compared with SpaceX’s $2.6 billion.

With station supply runs already under its belt, SpaceX aced its first of now nine astronaut flights in 2020, while Boeing got bogged down in design flaws that set the company back more than $1 billion. NASA officials still hold out hope that Starliner’s problems can be corrected in time for another crew flight in another year or so.

Robert saleh admits to mistake during last season’s jets ‘chaos’ he vows not to repeat.

Outwardly, Robert Saleh exudes remarkable calm for an NFL head coach who’s in the throes of his absolutely, positively, no “what-ifs?’’ last chance.

Saleh stands less than two weeks away from the Jets opener at San Francisco, which will mark the beginning of his fourth season with the team with which he owns an 18-33 record.

And yet he wears an expression that says, “What? Me worry?’’

last journey synonyms

Make no mistake: Saleh is not a dead man walking .

He has a Hall of Fame quarterback who’s finally healthy in Aaron Rodgers, some tantalizing skill-position talent to place around that QB and a revamped offensive line that (in theory) will protect him.

He also has a top-five defense.

The Jets should finally be good under Saleh’s watch. They should be a playoff team for the first time since 2010, three head coaches removed from Saleh’s hiring in 2021.

But Saleh is a realist. He knows that NFL stands as much for “Not For Long’’ as it does National Football League. And he knows his record isn’t good enough.

But he also knows he’s been dealt about as bad a hand at quarterback in his three seasons as even the most sadistic of people could dream up. (Zach Wilson, Mike White, Josh Johnson, Joe Flacco, Chris Streveler, Rodgers for four plays, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle).

Saleh’s 2024 Jets carry with them expectations that haven’t been this lofty in a long time. Herein lies Saleh’s latest in a long list of challenges: how he handles the high expectations, not to mention the pressure of knowing he’ll be fired if this team doesn’t (at least) make it to the playoffs.

It’s been a bumpy ride in his three seasons here. None of the three were as excruciating as last season, with Rodgers going down minutes into the opener and the organization ill-equipped to rebound from such massive adversity.

Saleh spoke candidly Tuesday about his shortcomings in handling the “chaos” (his word for it), owning many of the mistakes made.

“Last year — I’ll speak freely — probably got a little out of whack,” Saleh said. “[I’m] using this year and just reconnecting to myself and the things that need to get done from a global standpoint — offensively, defensively, special teams. The administrative stuff, that’s easy. Getting back to the X’s and O’s and making sure that all of our focus, including me, is locked in on that.”

Asked what he meant about “out of whack,” Saleh said, “Last year there was a lot of chaos, right? [I was] just trying to control things that were out of my control. [Now, I’m] just making sure that I reconnect to focusing on the things that I got control over.”

There are only 10 head coaches among the 32 in the NFL with longer tenure with their current team than Saleh. That list includes only five in the AFC and just one in the AFC East.

Jets coach Robert Saleh looks on during practice in Florham Park on Aug. 27, 2024.

Saleh smiled when reminded of this.

“Honestly, I’m not trying to be cheesy, [but] every year for coaching is now-or-never with the way the league is, especially over the last 10 to 15 years,’’ Saleh said. “You’re hanging by a thread no matter what year you were hired. It could be Year 1, Year 10, Year 20. You’re always hanging by a thread, and all it takes is one bad year and you’re shown the door.”

The Jets, of course, have had three bad years under Saleh’s watch and a fourth won’t be tolerated by owner Woody Johnson.

Saleh knows this.

last journey synonyms

“You get so used to being in an environment where expectations are what they are,” Saleh said. “That’s why it’s just so, so important [to] stay focused in the moment, be where your feet are and be a problem solver. Last year was a great reminder in that.”

Saleh believes last year’s trials and tribulations (a polite way of saying “sh-t show”) will help him and his staff navigate the expectations of this year.

“Anytime you go through an uncomfortable [situation], to grow in the world, to grow as an individual, you’ve got to live in uncomfortable environments,” Saleh said. “I would say last year was one of the more uncomfortable environments that you could create for an organization. And because of it, I think our players, coaches, everybody in this building are better for it and because of it.

“We put a lot into this offseason studying the things that we did a year ago, so we have a ton of confidence that if the bad stuff hits that fan, that we’ll be able to adjust and make sure that we always put our players in position to be successful. [That] has been the main focus of this entire offseason.

“We’re definitely all better for what happened last year.”

We’ll begin to find out how true those words are Sept. 9, when the Jets finally play for real in their season opener against the 49ers.

Louisville volleyball begins journey to Final Four with upset vs third-ranked Wisconsin

Portrait of Prince James Story

If they didn't know before Tuesday night, No. 6 Louisville volleyball and No. 9 Kentucky now understand the path to reach the Final Four in December at the KFC Yum! Center will be more of a marathon than a sprint.

The Cardinals defeated No. 3 Wisconsin, 18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20, in the second match of the AVCA First Serve Showcase , which ended about midnight.

The Wildcats lost to No. 2 Nebraska, 21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 20-25, in the opening match Tuesday night.

The perennial powers ushered in the Division I season at the 18th annual AVCA First Serve Showcase. It was the first time the AVCA Showcase had been played since 2014, and it was Louisville's first appearance at the event. The Wildcats previously played in it in 2010.

The Cardinals used a team effort to earn their second win against the Badgers in program history. Their last victory against Wisconsin was in 1985.

Dani Busboom Kelly, now in her eighth season at Louisville, has propelled U of L to the upper echelon of the sport. The Cardinals have made two Final Four appearances and four Elite Eights, winning four ACC titles.

"I think it just continues to cement that we're a great program, and, you know, we might not be a sweatshirt school or a team that can look back 25 years ago and say we were playing for national championships, but we're here now, and we attract players that fit our style and that want to be great," Busboom Kelly said. "It's pretty amazing what we've done in the last eight years, and I think we just keep setting the bar higher and higher. It's pretty awesome."

ACC Player of the Year  Anna DeBeer , an Assumption graduate, and Defensive Player of the Year Elena Scott , a Mercy Academy graduate, are eager to lead Louisville to its first NCAA championship in their hometown. The Final Four is scheduled to begin Dec. 19.

The Cardinals' journey began Tuesday night. Cara Cresse and Charitie Luper , who joined Scott and DeBeer on the preseason All-ACC team, helped set the tone against the Badgers.

Luper tied Sofia Maldonado Diaz for the team lead in kills (11). Cresse recorded eight kills and six blocks.

Busboom Kelly expects fans to support the Cardinals throughout the season.

"I expect our fans, you know, when we're at a more reasonable time, to be a little rowdier. But, you know, having people show up and stay that late is a big testament to the Cards Nation's belief in this team and wanting to stick around to watch it," Busboom Kelly said. "I'm very excited — for the future games."

The Cardinals were picked to finish third in the ACC preseason poll behind Pittsburgh and ACC newcomer Stanford.

Meantime, coach Craig Skinner is in his 20th season at Kentucky. He is the second-longest-tenured coach in the SEC behind Florida's Mary Wise .

With 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a 2020 NCAA championship, Skinner has turned the Wildcats into one of the nation's premier programs. One loss — especially to Nebraska — won't define the Wildcats.

"As a program, we're competing for SEC championships and national championships," Skinner said. "This year, you know, fortunately, we get the opportunity to play here the first match, and we all know that the national championship is in Louisville at the end of the year. ... So when you're in a program like Kentucky, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Louisville, those are expectations to be able to compete and to give yourself a chance to do that."

The Wildcats have won seven SEC titles in a row, including three shared titles with the Gators. Last year, Kentucky went 17-1 in the SEC and 21-8 overall.

Over the last seven years, Kentucky is 117-9 in conference play.

With the return of SEC Freshman of the Year Brooklyn DeLeye and two-time AVCA All-American Emma Grome , the Wildcats were picked to finish third in the SEC behind Florida and 2023 national champion Texas.

Synonym Chooser

How does the adjective last contrast with its synonyms?

Some common synonyms of last are final , terminal , and ultimate . While all these words mean "following all others (as in time, order, or importance)," last applies to something that comes at the end of a series but does not always imply that the series is completed or stopped.

When is it sensible to use final instead of last ?

In some situations, the words final and last are roughly equivalent. However, final applies to that which definitely closes a series, process, or progress.

When can terminal be used instead of last ?

The synonyms terminal and last are sometimes interchangeable, but terminal may indicate a limit of extension, growth, or development.

When is ultimate a more appropriate choice than last ?

While in some cases nearly identical to last , ultimate implies the last degree or stage of a long process beyond which further progress or change is impossible.

  • Washington Commanders

It's been a long journey for Washington Commanders wide receiver Martavis Bryant.

Six years after last playing on an NFL field, Bryant scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter in the Commanders' 20-10 win against the New England Patriots on Sunday night at Commanders Field. Bryant was a late addition in training camp, but his hard work over the past few weeks paid off on Sunday.

"It's not easy to get jumped down and put in the middle of an offense or a defense and learning it," coach Dan Quinn said. "So for him to come in and spend the time with [Wide Receivers Coach] Bobby Engram who, if you were somebody to come learn from, he's the one you'd wanna pick. And so I was just really proud of him at the end. There was a [pass interference] that went his way, a touchdown at the end, so I was very excited for him."

Coach Quinn hopes that Bryant's journey can serve as an inspiration to some of the other Commanders in the locker room.

"I think as a ball player and a teammate you really have appreciation for somebody's journey," Quinn said. "Maybe even if you might not have been a part of that. But you recognize it when things don't always go the way you'd hoped it would. So, for someone like him to stay with it, that shows a lot of grit where it would've been real easy just to walk away and not be able to do it. I had a chance to coach him some last year and I was impressed. I didn't forget. So, would he make the most of that opportunity? I felt that energy from him. I think it's probably a combination of he's a good teammate as a new guy here, but there's also some appreciation for a story that shows some real resilience and some fight which these guys certainly appreciate.”

Bryant faces an uphill battle to make the Commanders 53-man roster. At the receiver position, spots are already reserved for Terry McLaurin, Olamide Zaccheaus, Dyami Brown and rookie Luke McCaffrey. Others like Byron Pringle and Jamison Crowder also have good chances to make the team, so Bryant has a difficult road, but he has made it to where the Commanders will have a difficult time cutting him.
