Home / Travel / Gadiara, where the rivers meet
J ust a river separates Gadiara from Geonkhali, the first in Howrah district, the second in Purba Medinipur . When we say 'a river', however, we actually mean three. Because three rivers - Hooghly, Rupnarayan, and Damodar - meet here, at two different points, and then flow on toward the sea as the Hooghly.
Gadiara is fairly close to Kolkata, as you can imagine, a mere 85 km or so. And a very fine destination it is, too. The river is broad and brimming with clean, flowing water. The riverbank is lined with beautiful trees which offer ample shade should you wish to merely sit beneath them and stare at the churning waters. For the activity-oriented tourist, there's always a boat ride down the Hooghly. And you can actually see three differently coloured streams as the three rivers meet and merge. Before you get into that boat, however, you should know that owing to the confluence of the three rivers, the currents here are particularly strong. Moreover, the occasional waves created by larger vessels will quite literally rock the boat, so your boat ride could well turn into an adventure.
For history enthusiasts, a visit to the old fort built by Robert Clive is a must visit, as is the old lighthouse. To be fair, however, almost nothing remains of Clive's Fort Mornington apart from a few brick walls, thanks to riverine erosion.

A ferry will take you across the river to Geonkhali, once again a charming destination which granta you access to Mahishadal Rajbari, and the ancient city of Tamralipta (Tamluk), though the palace, too, is more or less in ruins. One other attraction is the ancient Bargabheema Temple.
How to get there Plenty of options from Kolkata. Once train services resume post the Covid-19 lockdown, you can catch a train to Bagnan, and travel onward by bus. Or you could take a bus from Kolkata itself. And if you have your own conveyance, nothing like a road trip all the way to Nurpur, from where a launch will take you around Gadiara and Geonkhali.
Where to stay Should you wish to spend more than a day, and we would heartily recommend a weekend trip, there's the riverside Roopmanjari Tourism Property (earlier Rupnarayan Tourist Lodge) run by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd . For bookings and other details, contact

A well spent saturday sunday at rupnarayan tourist lodge..its a govt property..maintained well..staffs are very helpful..rooms are cheaper..most importantly its right in front of the river and the confluence..thanks
We were a group of three families travelling from kolkata. Dates - 29.04.17 till 02.05.17 Travel time - 2 hrs by car from kolkata Food - very steep and unreasonable - taste not so great. Stay - beautiful property. Nice walkway around the property. Intercom facility- rooms don't have intercom connection with reception or restaurant. Children's play area available with swings and slides. While kolkata was reeling under scorching heat, this place was a nice breezy escape. The breeze kept the temperature cool. We stayed both in a.c and non a.c rooms. Both have river view. The a.c rooms are built on low height and hence the view is some what blocked. The non a.c rooms have clearer view. The non a.c rooms seem to be recently renovated. They are big, bright and airy with clean washrooms. Though we were on the top floor still the heat did not feel due to continuous river breeze. The early morning walk round the property is very serene / relaxing. If you are a nature lover, love the song if the breeze and the ripples of water then this place is a good visit for a weekend.
The Rupnarayan Tourist Lodge (maintained by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation) in Gadiara (dist. Howrah) is located just at the confluence of the Ganges and the Runarayan rivers. It has a sprawling green premise with lots of trees and ponds. Families, especially with kids will like this lodge very much as it has a park in its big lawn with see-saws, garden swings etc. Long back this compound was a Rice Mill owned by the well-known Manna, Mondal and Mallicks of that area. Gadiara is a suitable place even for weekend tour. It’s near to Kolkata - can be reached by car or bus in around 3 hours. We went by car from Barrackpur within less than 3 hours (Lodge charges parking fee!!). We stayed for a night there (February 18, 2017). The recently renovated Lodge has two blocks separately for AC and Non-AC (2 storied). The Non –AC rooms in the 1st and 2nd floors have all the essential amenities and are quite spacious, each with a river facing balcony. However, don’t expect all the fittings in the room, especially in the bathroom to work properly. No geyser in the bathroom (but they arrange hot water if asked). From the balcony one can have a clear view of the sunrise and rivers quietly flowing by. The lodge has also an elevated platform at the front with sitting arrangement just to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, especially the life going around the rivers. In the morning you will have the privilege of getting up with the chirping of birds, many of the likes are not generally seen. The Dining Hall is on the first floor with a protruding extension in the front. We liked that place very much. Enjoy your food looking at the slow pace of life going around. Food items in the menu are numerous but many of them are not available if you ask for. Food is really tasty, although a bit expensive. Do try some fresh fish preparation – delicious and their ‘sukto’ – oh so tasteful !! Launch Ferry ghat is 3 - 4 minutes’ walk from the lodge. One can go to Geonkhali (Dt. Purba Medinipur) and Nurpur (Dt. South 24 Parganas) on the other sides of the rivers. Service is overall good. Credit/Debit card, although accepted, generally don’t work due to bad internet connection (especially on Sundays). So go prepared to pay in cash. The rooms can be booked on line from the WBTDC portal (20% discount in room charge for Senior Citizens). Non-AC room charge is cheap considering the facilities offered. There is no drivers’ room or Dormitory. Check-in: 12 noon, Check- out: 11AM They allow picnic parties to use their designated halls/shades in the garden with payment. Normal calm atmosphere is bound to be disturbed during such picnic time.

The guidance from the internet about the easiest way to reach Gadiara in District Howrah was a bit misleading with no specific information. I took the initiative to explore and successfully visited Gadiara. The best route is to catch a direct Long distance CTC Bus from Esplanade CTC Bus Stand. Buses leave at 6.30 am, 7.30 am and 8.30 am in the morning. I caught the 7.30am bus and reached Gadiara at 10.05am. The road is excellent. From Gadiara Bus Stand to Rupnarayan Tourist Lodge is about 1/2 km. Van rickshaws ply and charge Rs.10.00 per head only. The Check-in time at the Tourist Lodge is 12 Noon therefore we had to wait till the inmates checked out at 11 am and the rooms were rearranged for our check-in. However, we took the opportunity to have our Breakfast at the Tourist Lodge Dining Room on the 1st floor. The breakfast was excellent. The AC Room which we had booked online was not as good as the Non-AC Room which were much cheaper and much spacious and better-furnished and comfortable than our AC Room. I will visit again soon but will book a NON-AC Room.
A very nice place if you are visiting with kids and family. Huge lawn with sea-saw,garden swings, and kids can run around this huge premise. We visited in the morning of "Holi" this year along with my family and friends' and their family. It's a 2 and half hours of drive from Kolkata. We went via Uluberia via Gorchumukh ---Shyampur --Gadiara.The road was all good thoughout and there wasn't any problem while driving. We started pretty early around 6:30 AM to avoid any possible conflicts in the road due to Holi and we reached around 9:30 AM(half an hour due to tea and snacks halt in the middle). We were allowed to enter the rooms only after 12 noon since as per the staff ..people will not checkout before 12 PM. In the mean time we played holi outside .It was fun. The lunch was good and sumptuous and little expensive than what should be, but the quality of food is good."Shukto" was awesome and the quantity was also reasonable. The rooms are all river facing and the rooms are quite bigger(the non A/C rooms in the first floor..3 rooms which we occupied). Maintenance is always a problem with all the govt properties and this was no exception, the shower button was missing in one of the rooms, but the employees are friendly. In the late afternoon, we went for a boat ride in Geonkhali and back. The night was cozy and since it was full moon night , one can stare at the moon from the balcony for hours. The breakfast was good early morning before we checked out. They charge for extra bed if the person is 8yrs and above. Overall good experience for a one night trip.

Puzzling out Moscow for visitors under 30
Navigation games on the streets and conversation clubs in hostels are all part of the fun of figuring out Moscow when you’re young at heart. Source: Press Photo.
Hugging strangers, reciting poetry and looking for bird-shaped graffiti is not usually part of a city tour—but Moscow Game Tour is no ordinary company.
Nikita Bogdanov, 25, founder of the company, says: “It’s not a regular tour, it’s a quest. You interact with Russian people, and you gain more experience.”
Moscow Game Tour is one of a new breed of innovative tours run by and for young people. They are either low-cost or free, and prioritise interacting with locals over traditional sightseeing.
Mr Bogdanov started Moscow Game Tour in 2009 to encourage visitors to explore areas outside the city centre. In the tour, which costs 700 roubles (about $22), participants are “players” and complete challenges that lead them to clues in the shape of a matryoshka doll.
Discovering fairy-tale Moscow
Strolling around the Kremlin
Discovering a glorious corner of paradise
Many tasks involve asking passers-by for directions or trying a Russian phrase. Along the way, players discover interesting features such as a monastery canteen, or a Socialist Realist statue.
Some clues are easier to locate than others. “There was one spot that we absolutely could not find,” says Vera Baranova, 25, who took part in a quest at Tsaritsyno Park in south-east Moscow. “When we asked someone, it turned out that we were actually right on top of it.”
Mr Bogdanov also operates the Moscow Free Tour, which provides an overview of major sites between Kitai Gorod and the Kremlin free of charge. In peak season, this more traditional outing attracts between a dozen and 40 people every day; the Game Tour runs only once or twice a week and usually attracts between five and 10 participants. Convincing visitors to sign up for an unconventional tour can be a challenge. “The Free Tour is more popular because it’s more easily understandable,” Mr Bogdanov says. “For the Game Tour, you need to explain to people what it is.”
Business has picked up as Mr Bogdanov has formed relationships with hotels, major tour agencies including TUI and companies such as Google. This year, he also began receiving support from Moscow’s Committee for Tourism and the Hotel Industry, which has launched a programme called “Moscow Fresh” to support creative tourism.
Moscow Game Tour is one of a new breed of innovative tours run by and for young people. Source: Press Photo.
In addition to the Free Tour and Game Tour, Mr Bogdanov’s company offers daily paid-for tours with a variety of themes. The retro Communist Tour visits central Soviet landmarks, including the Lubyanka (former headquarters of the KGB); the Gulag Museum; a Soviet-style canteen and Eliseevsky, a regal shop on Tverskaya Street considered the grandest store in the Soviet Union (which these days sells imported French yoghurt and other modern luxuries).
Visitors can also venture below ground on the Metro Tour. The latter stops at some of the most ornate stations in Moscow’s beloved Stalinist metro system, such as the mosaic-adorned Komsomolskaya. In an attempt to supply visitors with information beyond the average pocket guide, the tour recounts little-known facts about the metro, such as how many babies have been born on it.
Alexei Sotskov, 30, was inspired to start Moscow Greeter , a local franchise of the international Greeter network, after giving informal tours to friends. “I have a lot of friends in foreign countries, and when they come to Moscow I show them interesting places. So I thought it would be a great idea to start running a tourist service,” he says.
The greeters are mostly students learning English who take visitors to lesser-known sights, such as the former royal estate Kolomenskoye, as well as exhibitions and sporting events. The greeters not only show the tourists around but they also chat to them. “Greeters talk about their lives, their parents, where they’re from in Moscow, and where they study,” says Mr Sotskov.
“Traditional guides just give people information they read in a book.”
Valentina Lebedeva, a second-year linguistics student, has been a greeter for two months. “When most people come to Moscow, they visit the Kremlin and everything, but they go back and they still don’t really get how people really live here,” she says.
“Greeters offers tourists a good way to get a real impression of Russia, so that you don’t just visit the usual tourist sights.”
Another unconventional tour company, Lovely Russia , also strives to provide a more engaging experience for tourists. “A lot of the tours I saw being run by tour providers were really boring, just buses with large crowds of 60 year-olds,” says the company’s co-founder Anna Shegurova, 25. “There was not a lot for a younger crowd, a more off-the-beaten-path kind of thing.” Lovely Russia offers a variety of $22 tours in English. Locations include metro stations, Constructivist landmarks and a “Moscow as it is” outing that winds through the city’s side streets. At the end of the tour, guides suggest places where participants can enjoy a beer.
Ms Shegurova says the guides try to show visitors “a different side of Russia”.
“It’s a great city with a really long and interesting history… but you wouldn’t really know unless you have someone with you who’s able to share this history and make it interesting,” she says.
For visitors without a guide, getting around Moscow can still be a challenge. Over the past year, some English-language signs indicating the locations of historical sights have been put up, but metro and street signs remain in Cyrillic.
Mila, volunteer for 'wow local'
“Coming here, it’s very hard to get orientated,” says Irina Tripapina, 25, the organiser of WowLocal . “We decided to compensate for the lack of information in English by establishing a community of volunteers who are willing to help visitors find their way.” After passing language and navigation tests, WowLocal volunteers are given T-shirts and badges emblazoned with the phrase “Ask Me, I’m Local.”
“Tourists can meet WowLocal at any part of the city and at any time – even at night in Butovo,” says Ms Tripapina, referring to the suburb south of Moscow.
Since the project started in July, Ms Tripapina says it has recruited about 400 volunteers. She wears her badge every day on her way to work, and says she’s frequently stopped by foreigners asking for directions (as well as Russians looking for the metro).
Occasionally, she fields some more unusual requests: “Once, a guy from Britain asked me where to get a bowl of pelmeni,” she says.
WowLocal also brings together local people and tourists through city navigation games and conversation clubs at hostels. “We bring volunteers together with the travellers, so that they can share with each other,” explains Ms Tripapina.

To accommodate your visit to Gadiara, the government of West Bengal has taken the initiative and built the tourist lodge known as Roopmanjari Tourism Property.
Rupnarayan Tourist Lodge in Gadiara is run by West Bengal govt. I booked a non-ac room online to stay there for 1 night. The rooms are pretty big with TV. A large balcony offered nice view of Rupnarayan river. The large compound has ample car parking space and a children's' park. The restaurant offers nice food with descent price.
The Rupnarayan Tourist Lodge is the best place to stay in Gadiara.
