Arrival in Rio de Janeiro

Arrival and later drive to check in at a hotel.

Rio de Janeiro

After breakfast, visit Christ the Redeemer, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Later, enjoy a city tour of the former capital of Brazil. Later, proceed for a cable car ride up to Corcovado, or Sugarloaf Mountain, to enjoy a 360-degree view of the city.

Rio de Janeiro - Iguazu Falls

Check out of the hotel and board the flight to Foz de Iguazu, one of the grandest waterfalls in the world spanning three countries. The most exciting part of today will be when we get up close to the cascading water during a thrilling safari boat ride.

Iguazu Falls (Argentina) - Buenos Aires

Today we will check out and visit the Argentinian side of the falls. This includes a ride on the train to the devil's throat, part of the falls. Later, fly to Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires

After breakfast, go for a city tour that will take you around the La Boca neighbourhood with coloured little structures. Evening, you could go to watch an authentic Tango dance performance.

Buenos Aires - Bariloche

After breakfast, board the flight to San Carlos de Bariloche. Proceed for a half-day tour, visiting Mt. Campanario by a chair lift and its surroundings. Spend the evening by Nahuel Huapi Lake in our hotel facing the lake. We are in the Lake District of the Andes and this is the 2nd largest lake in Argentina.

Bariloche - Cerro Tronador - Black Glacier - Bariloche

It will be a day of adventure as we head out onto a dirt road to enter the Tronador National Park. We will stop at multiple viewpoints in the day including Lake Mascordi and the view to enjoy the most imposing and the tallest mountain in the Lake District of the Andes, Mount Tronador. It is the only mountain covered in snow all around the year.

Bariloche - Puerto Varas

Today we will experience both, land as well as water travel, and pass by some of the most breathtaking scenery. We will cross three lakes - Nahuel Huapi, Lake Fria, and Lake Todos Los Santos. After the immigration check for crossing the border to Chile, we’ll arrive in Puerto Varas. Our stay here overlooks a volcano and the Llanquhue Lake.

Puerto Varas

Spend the morning at leisure, and later proceed to the regional capital Puerto Montt. Visit the viewpoint to see the many Pacific Islands, and then walk around the local market. In the evening, go for a walk around Puerto Varas.

Puerto Varas - Lima

Transfer to the Puerto Montt Airport and board the flight to Lima.

Lima - Puerto Maldonado

Board a flight to the interiors of the Amazon Jungle Reserve. We will sail on the Madre de Dios to reach our accommodation. In the evening, go for a walk to observe the nocturnal insects and later go boating to try and spot an alligator family.

Puerto Maldonado

There are various local excursions that you can go for at different times of the day based on your physical abilities. These excursions will introduce you to the flora and fauna of the largest rainforest in the world.

Puerto Maldonado - Sacred Valley

Board the flight to Cusco via Lima and on arrival, drive down to Sacred Valley. Check-in at our hotel in Yucay, a town on the banks of the Urubamba River.

Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast, we will drive to the train station in the town of Ollantaytambo in the morning. Here we will board the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, the base of Machu Picchu. Once in Aguas Calientes, take the bus to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, where the guided tour will start. Afterwards, we will head back to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Board the train back to start our journey to Urubamba.

Sacred Valley - Cusco

Visit the Maras Salt Mines in the morning and later drive to visit the market of Pisac. Later proceed to Cusco and check in to the hotel.

After breakfast, head out for a guided tour of the city. Qorikancha, the most significant temple in the Inca Empire, will be our highlight of the day. In the evening, walk to Plazoleta de San Blas.

Cusco - Puno - Lima

Drive to Puno early in the morning. Arrive at Titicaca Lake, the highest navigable lake in the world. Enjoy a boat ride to the Uros Islands in Lake Titicaca. The exotic Uros Islands are made of reed grass, and learning about the Aymara culture is an interesting experience. Later drive to the Juliaca airport to board a flight to Lima.

Enjoy a city tour of Lima that will take you to Plaza de Armas, and the old part of Lima. Lunch will be local at the Larco Cafe, followed up by a visit to the most interesting museum in Lima. The evening is well spent walking in Barranco, the Bohemian Art district of Lima.

Lima - Paracas

After breakfast, drive south on the Pacific coast, parallel to the ocean on a desert road. Visit a local distillery for a tasting session of Pisco. Late afternoon, have a classic seafood-friendly lunch in Paracas. Check in to the hotel and later enjoy your evening watching the sunset, and walking on the beach.

Paracas - Lima

In the morning, visit the Ballestas Islands (southern neighbours of the Galapagos in Ecuador) to see penguins, sea lions, and marine birds. Later, proceed back to Lima for an overnight stay.

Lima - Sao Paulo

Morning, board the flight to Sao Paulo and on arrival proceed to the airport hotel for check-in.

Sao Paulo - Mumbai

Check out of the hotel and proceed to the airport for your flight back home.

The itinerary is well laid out and has a leisure feel to it. Even if there are 8 -9 internal flights over a period of 20 days, the tour does not feel tiresome.

The entire continent and especially Peru is gearing up to vegetarianism. Soups and Veg Risottos will be served with veggies. We believe in local food, Indian food will only be served as a variety.

We acclimatize well by staying in the Sacred Valley for the first three nights at 8,500 ft. Altitude sickness won’t be a problem.

Shopping is abundant especially in Peru and we recommend carrying some USD to change so that you can buy things off the local markets.

Credit cards are accepted all over except local markets. We would ask you to get your India SIM card to be made roaming under a scheme.

An applicant applying for Chile Visa must obtain a Police Clearance Certificate from concern Psk.

Indian citizens holding a visa for at least six months or permanent resident status in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia or any Schengen State. The document stipulates that Indian nationals shall enter Peru visa-free for a stay of up to 180 days, either for a continuous visit or several consecutive visits, within a 12-months period.

A guided tour of Machu Picchu is 2 hours long. The ruins operate on a one way circuit that leads to the exit of the ruins and re-entry is not allowed with a Machu Picchu general entrance ticket.

A tour of Machu Picchu includes stops at the Guardhouse, agricultural zone, main gate, fountains, tower, temple zone, Temple of the Three Windows, astronomical observatory, Sacred Rock, Group of Three Doorways, royal enclosures, Temple of the Condor and storage area. Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What countries are a part of Latin America?

Latin America encompasses Central and South America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and the Caribbean Islands.

Do I need a visa to travel to Latin America?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to Latin America depends on the individual country you're visiting and the nationality of your passport.

Each country in Latin America has its own entry and visa requirements, so it's best to do your own research before you travel.

For example, nationals from the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand don't need to obtain a visa before visiting most South American countries. Still, it's always wise to double-check well before your intended arrival.

What is internet access like in Latin America?

Internet access in Latin America can vary from country to country and between different regions in that country.

Most hotel chains or other accommodation options in major cities will have wi-fi, so connecting to the Internet will be easy.

An international SIM card with a local provider is recommended if you'd rather have no restrictions (and no exorbitant data roaming fees). This still doesn't mean you're guaranteed access to the Internet, though, as the signal is often limited or unreliable in rural areas such as Argentina, Peru and Colombia.

What are the toilets like in Latin America?

The toilet facilities in Latin America differ depending on which country you're in and what region of that country you're in.

Most major cities have westernised toilet facilities in places such as restaurants and hotels, but the further from urban areas you are, the less likely you'll find these types of toilets, so set your expectations accordingly.

One thing to note is that you'll be asked not to flush toilet paper down the toilet. Plumbing systems in most Latin American countries aren't equipped to handle toilet paper. Instead, bathrooms usually have a small sanitation bin beside the toilet to dispose of toilet paper.

Can I drink the water in Latin America?

In most Latin American countries such as Belize, Guatemala, Brazil and Peru, drinking tap water isn't recommended.

This also means you should brush your teeth with bottled or filtered water, be mindful when showering, ask for drinks without ice in them and peel your fruit and vegetables before you eat them.

The two Latin American countries where tap water is generally considered safe to drink are Chile and Colombia; however, you might still get an upset stomach due to the different mineral content.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle that can be filled with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

When is the best time to visit Latin America?

The best time to visit Latin America is between December and April, when days are nice and dry with reasonably warm but comfortable temperatures. However, this time is also peak season, so expect large attractions to be crowded and accommodation prices to be increase.

If you want nice weather without all of the tourists, try travelling during a shoulder season (September - November or (April - May).

Is tipping expected in Latin America?

Tipping is generally expected by tourists in Latin America, with a gratuity of 10% being the average amount. Most restaurants will add a service charge to your bill, but it's also expected that you leave a 10% tip. However, it's more or less voluntary as some countries don't have a strong tipping culture.

What currency will I need on a Latin American tour?

The most used currency in Latin America is the peso, which is used in 7 countries; Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Uruguay.

What currency you'll need depends on where in Latin America you're going.

Some other currencies include the Brazilian Real (BRL), the Peruvian Sol (PEN), the Costa Rican Solon (CRC) and the Honduran Lempira (HNL). Some Latin American countries also accept United States Dollars (USD).

Do I need to bring cash with me on a Latin American tour?

Cash is still widely used in Latin America and in some countries, is the preferred form of payment, so you should definitely have cash on you during your tour.

Your leader can tell you the closest and most reliable ATMs if you didn't change over money at the airport.

Is Latin America safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers visiting Latin America.

Although some countries are more tolerant and accepting than others (Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is considered to be the gay capital of Latin America), public displays of affection between same-sex couples are still heavily frowned upon in some countries and countries such as Bolivia still have homosexuality laws in place.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

T he highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

In November 2017 I did the Intrepid Argentina & Brazil Adventure and the whole thing blew my mind! We had less than 12 people on our trip and the leader Yamila looked after us all as if we were here family even taking us into the suburbs of Buenos Aires to eat at her favorite resteraunt in her local area. It was such a great feeling to be surrounded by locals and not see 1 tourist for the evening. The trip ticked everything that I wanted to see, showed me a side to the cities I would never have seen on my own or in a big group - Yamila even helped me find a ticket to Super Classico which is something I never thought I would have ever been able to attend. This was was such much for than a tour - rather a genuine adventure! Oh and Iguazu is unlike anything I have seen before! You must do the jet boat!

This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

• San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
• Austin, Texas
• Waco, Texas
• Dallas, Texas
• Little Rock, Arkansas
• Indianapolis, Indiana
• Dayton, Ohio
• Cleveland, Ohio
• Buffalo, New York
• Rochester, New York
• Syracuse, New York
• Burlington, Vermont

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
