15 amazing short trips from dubai to make the best memories.

long weekend trips from dubai

Is there a long weekend coming up? Or perhaps you just feel like going somewhere for the weekend and want only a short trip from Dubai? I’ve selected 15 amazing places that are perfect for a short vacation from Dubai. If you don’t have that much time or it’s a little bit last minute, not to worry!

As a resident of nearly 10 years, I’ve explored many parts of the region so I’ve included something for everyone. All within an easy distance from Dubai.

Table of Contents

Locations Driving Distance from Dubai

1. fujairah, uae.

fujairah beach with a view of snoopy island for a short trip from dubai

Known for its natural beauty and stunning clear blue sea water. This is the perfect spot for sea lovers where you can enjoy yacht trips, snorkelling and scuba diving. In particular, Snoopy Island is popular with visitors. It’s close enough to the shore to swim or kayak to the island.

Fujairah is still part of the UAE but a different Emirate so you won’t need to take your passport, just your Emirates ID for the hotel.

It is also home to one of the oldest mosques in the UAE, Al Badiyah Mosque, which was built around 1446 and is a lovely example of the humble architecture of the region at the time.

Distance: 122.7 km Driving time : 1 hour 15 minutes

2. Hatta, UAE

hatta lake

If you live in Dubai or the UAE and you haven’t yet been to Hatta, you’re missing out! This beautiful lake and surrounding mountains offer an ideal spot of natural beauty without ever leaving the Emirate of Dubai.

There are all sorts of outdoor activities here, from kayaking on the lake to hiking up the mountains. There are even bicycle hire shops and various different paths to bike based on your ability. It’s an ideal family-friendly location.

It’s best to visit during Dubai winter, my favourite month weather-wise is November for Dubai . Be aware that most of the places are closed during the summer months , such as the Hatta Wadi hub and that most activities are outdoors.

There aren’t that many hotels to choose from but Hatta Fort is a really popular choice in the area.

Distance: 134.7 km Driving time : 1 hour 22 minutes

3. Bateen Liwa, UAE

long weekend trips from dubai

Yet another destination within the UAE. You’ll be surprised by the lush oases contrasting the golden desert sand dunes, this part of Abu Dhabi offers the best of both worlds. Whether you want to do a desert safari or explore farmlands with date palms.

Bordering Saudi Arabia, the more remote location is perfect for those wanting to get away from city life and experience Bedouin culture. Though in true UAE style, you need not give up any of your luxury comforts by staying at A nantara’s 5 star Qasr Al Sarab .

Distance: 335 km Driving time : 3 hours 36 minutes

4. Khasab, Oman

long weekend trips from dubai

This gem is located on the peninsula at the very north of the UAE, heading through Ras Al Khaimah. You might have come close to here if you went the Al Dara route for a Dubai Visa Run .

Khasab is the capital of Musandam and here you can experience peaceful natural wadis or experience a traditional Dhow boat at sea. It’s even possible to take a ferry over to the main part of Oman if you’re wanting an extended adventure.

Regardless of what type of holiday you like, here you can get a chance to see dolphins swimming or experience authentic bedouin culture. If you want to do more adventurous mountain hikes it’s possible here too or you can enjoy a leisurely fishing trip. You’ll find fully authentic dhows here too, like the ones used to cross the Ocean for hundreds of years.

Distance: 197.2 km Driving time : 2 hours 30 minutes

5. Sir Bani Yas Island, UAE

long weekend trips from dubai

If you’re really looking for a unique experience, Sir Bani Yas Island is truly a bucket list item. Enjoy an animal safari on the island, watch the roaming Arabian Oryx, Giraffes knawing on leaves and cheetahs roaming the landscape.

Located around 2 hours away from Abu Dhabi, this is another option that isn’t too far away but will really make you feel like you’ve been transported to another land without needing your passport.

If you wish to actually stay on the island, the only resorts are both owned by Anantara . Alternatively, you can stay at more affordable nearby hotels on the mainland and take an excursion to Sir Bani Yas. The choice is yours!

Distance: 362 km Driving time : 3 hours 23 mins

6. Nurai Island, UAE

long weekend trips from dubai

Another island option is the fabulous Nurei Island , also off the coast of Abu Dhabi. You’ll be greeted with a glass of champagne or a none alcoholic drink if you choose, while waiting for the speed boat to take you to the island.

Villas have their own private pools and you’ll find a wide range of luxury accommodations. It is on the more expensive end for a weekend away but you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to your own tropical island getaway.

It’s located just off the coast of Abu Dhabi, so you won’t even need to travel that far. Perfect for those who don’t want to do a lot of driving but feel like they’ve travelled somewhere with a very different feel. It was also featured on The Real Housewives of Dubai .

You can also buy a day pass to the Island if you’re not wanting to fully splurge for a villa.

Distance: 129 km Driving time : 1 hour 8 minutes

7. Nizwa & Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Danni B | Travel | Revert (@danniinthedesert) on Jun 6, 2020 at 8:34am PDT

This destination takes around 5 hours to drive to Jebel Akhdar from Dubai, so it’s perfect for those wanting a low-cost vacation for the whole family. Along with being a short road trip from Dubai. There are different styles of hotels to suit your budget including bedouin style tents.

There are even camping spots if you have your own camping gear. Just make sure to take warm sleeping bags and a heater or buy wood for a campfire. As it does get pretty cold in the night time, especially in the winter months. It can be up to 10 degrees colder than sea level.

There are two stunning luxury five-star hotels to choose from, Anantara Jabal Al Akhdar and Alia Jabal Akhdar, on the very top of the mountain. There are also affordable camp style hotels. The camping spots have incredible views of the stunning valleys of Oman. The most incredible part about this destination is the view from the top of the mountains.

When you’ve had enough of hiking or camping, the city of Nizwa is close by. Here you can explore Nizwa Souq, one of the oldest souqs in Oman, and the historic Nizwa Fort. Everything is very family-friendly for taking the kids.

If you’re camping, you can return to your campsite and do like that Omanis do and have a BBQ. If you’ve decided on a more luxurious trip and splashed out on one of the fabulous hotels, then winding down in the spa after exploring all day.

Distance: 417.9 km Driving time : 4 hours 30 minutes

8. Sohar, Oman

long weekend trips from dubai

If you’re looking for a shorter drive than Nizwa, Sohar is closer to the border of Dubai in Oman and is a lovely seaside town. Taking approximately 2 and a half hours to drive. Sohar has a rich history and a fort similar to Nizwa but on a smaller scale. It also has beautiful mosques and souks similar to other other parts of Oman.

Sohar is a great destination for a relaxing vacation. It’s perfect for families wanting a low-key holiday and is rumoured to be the birthplace of mythical Sinbad the Sailor. So why not spend some time enjoying the beach or sea?

If you don’t drive, you can also take a bus to Sohar from Dubai . Making a really affordable destination for those wanting to travel without spending a fortune.

Distance: 222 km Driving time : 2 hours 30 minutes

9. Khobar, Saudi Arabia

long weekend trips from dubai

Since starting the Saudi tourist visa , Saudi has started to become a unique destination for those wanting to go the route less travelled. Khobar has stunning blue waters and quiet beach resorts, such as Half Moon Bay.

If you’re planning an epic road trip, it’s possible to do a stop or two in Abu Dhabi, a stop at Khobar and then finally hopping over to Bahrain.

This destination is further than the others and does require a confident driver, as you’ll be going through some of the more lonely quarters of the desert. Hence why it’s called “The Empty Quarter.” So you’ll need to pack some supplies with you in case of any emergencies.

It’s also possible to fly if you prefer, though you will likely need to hire a car once you reach the other side, as Saudi doesn’t have a huge public transport infrastructure for getting around the city. Also, different attractions can be quite far apart.

Distance: 798 km Driving time : 8 hours 24 minutes

10. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

long weekend trips from dubai

In the last few years, it’s incredible the amount of change that has happened in Riyadh. Riyadh has some really amazing sights not far from the city and has combined its bedouin roots into a unique artistic culture that exists within Saudi. It has a certain ruggedness around the edges. So if you’re one of those people who think the UAE is over-polished, Riyadh could be the perfect spot for you.

Some of the unique things to do are, driving to Edge of The World, visiting the historical area of Diriyah or exploring Heet Cave in the middle of the desert.

Again you’ll need to make sure you’re fully prepared for this drive as you’ll pass through some rather desolate areas and flights are also available taking around 2 hours from Dubai.

Distance: 1056 km Driving time : 10 hours 46 minutes Flying time : 2 hours

11. Manama, Bahrain

long weekend trips from dubai

Actually, this one you can choose to drive or fly but you do need either a Saudi tourist visa or a Saudi transit visa if you plan to drive here. You can really make a road trip of it and stop by some places in Abu Dhabi along the way.

Staying within the GCC, Bahrain is famous for its foodie scene and there are even some restaurants by famous chefs that aren’t in Dubai. Such as Cut by Wolfgang Puck. It’s only a one hour flight away, making it another great choice for a short trip from Dubai.

Manama, of course, is quite similar to Dubai in terms of culture and lifestyle. There are so many beautiful hotels to choose from and the Four Seasons here is probably one of the most stunning in the Arabian Gulf with its lobby of artificial silk trees.

In terms of attractions in Manama, Bahrain has lots to offer with its history. You can wander around Manama Souq, visit the Bahrain National Museum, Al Fateh Grand Mosque or the famous Tree of Life. Manama is a great vacation if you’re wanting to travel somewhere without giving up the lifestyle we become accustomed to in Dubai.

Distance: 840.9 km Driving time : 9 hours 13 minutes

12. Muscat, Oman

long weekend trips from dubai

The capital city of Oman is another gem of the Gulf region where you can enjoy the similarities to the UAE while also enjoying the differences. You’ll see Omanis walking around with their colourful hats and traditional dress. The National Museum of Oman will take you through time, back to the golden age of Islam and the rich history of trade that Oman has with the East African nations.

Other activities are its beautiful mosques, traditional souqs and the lovely corniche by the sea. You’ll also see street sellers dotted everywhere selling grilled meats and fish. The best part about Muscat is you really can choose what type of vacation or holiday you want, whether it’s relaxed high end luxury or a very down to earth cultural experience.

Distance: 452.8 km Driving time : 4 hours 35 minutes

Locations Short Flights from Dubai

All these destinations are a short flight away from Dubai, making them perfect for a long weekend or for those who just don’t want to do a long flight. I like to use Skyscanner to find the cheapest possible flights for the destination I want.

13. Baku, Azerbaijan

long weekend trips from dubai

The capital city of Azerbaijan, a vibrant city that is popular with UAE residents due to its closeness to Dubai. Taking only three hours by plane. Ideal for a short trip. It’s also an ideal break if you’re wanting something that feels completely different to Dubai. There’s plenty of history and culture in this city located by the sea.

Key places to visit include The Palace of Shirvanshahs, Central Botanical Gardens, Bibiheybat mosque or you can wander around the historic Old Town and visit the many attractions.

Azerbaijani food is similar in many aspects to Middle Eastern food due to its influence from Persia and the Ottoman Empire. Perfect for those who enjoy their Arabic food home comforts like my husband.

The country also has many nature reserves you can drive to from Baku. One of the closest to Baku is Absheron National Park which is one hour drive. Gobustan National Park is another popular one and is also only one hour drive away from Baku.

Distance: 2940.5 km Flight time : 2 hours 55 minutes

14. Tbilisi, Georgia

long weekend trips from dubai

What you’ll spend on flights, you’ll certainly save on accommodation and going out by visiting Georgia. This country is hugely popular to travel to from the UAE and is not as well known for those outside the Gulf region. It also has many free activities.

Narikala Fortress is a must-visit and you’ll experience some of the Arab history in Europe. There’s also a 1500 meter trail around the fortress, taking you to some of Tbilisi’s most famous sights and into the old town. Along with beautiful views over the city.

Distance: 3395.7 km Flight time : 3 hours 30 minutes

15. Colombo, Sri Lanka

long weekend trips from dubai

Sri Lanka is full of natural beauty and is an ideal affordable vacation destination. The island is great for those wanting a break from the busy and metropolitan lifestyle of Dubai. Its naturally stunning beaches and breathtaking nature is very different from the UAE.

It is an often-overlooked tourist destination but is a wonderful gem that offers a variety of activities including safaris, whale spotting and natural beaches. Though to really take all of its beauty in, you’ll need a couple of weeks.

Many dishes have a lovely flavour mix of coconut and spices. Definitely one of the most enjoyable things for me about Sri Lanka is the food!

I recommend staying in the capital of Colombo trip for one night before heading to other parts of the Island. There’s really so much to choose from depending on what you’d like to do. Kandy offers lots of culture, Sigiriya is home to the famous rock citadel and Mirissa offers beautiful beaches with the chance to go whale spotting. So you can truly customise your stay based on what you’d love to do.

Distance: 3307 km Flight time: 4 hours 30 minutes

One of the best parts about living in Dubai is all the amazing destinations you can easily travel to. We hope this list of inspirations for a short trip from Dubai helps give you a few different travel ideas or even several destinations to add to your must-visit list.

My favourite if I want somewhere close to Dubai, would be Fujairah or staying on the fabulous Nurai Island . If you’re a family wanting something affordable, Jabal Al Akhdar is an awesome camping spot and a great range of hotels. If you really want something unique, then Sir Bani Yas is a one of a kind trip. But why only pick one? Use this list and plan some trips for years to come!

Don’t forget to use Skyscanner to find the cheapest possible flights to whichever destination you choose!

This post was first published in November 2018, updated for winter 2019-20

Best Short Getaways from Dubai

Baku, Azerbaijan

Suggested by sally prosser from my custard pie.

It’s impossible to choose my favourite as there are so many interesting places to visit for a long weekend that are easily accessible from Dubai. One of them is Baku in Azerbaijan, a simple 3-hour flight away .

View from the Old City towards the Flame Towers

All of the countries of the Caucasus have a very ancient and often turbulent history along the Silk Road. Baku has the footprints of thousands of merchants over time, fused with a new wave of impressive modern architecture.

The Zaha Hadid building gleams like a white sinuous shell over the city. It’s a breathtaking structure; the light moves softly over its curves on the outside and in angular shards through the windows on the ground floor. It’s a photographers’ heaven.

Check out this family guide for things to do in Baku here

By contrast, you can follow the winding cobbled streets through the beautifully restored, old city.  Inside its walls visit the 15 th Century Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and gain an eagle-eyed view of the ancient buildings, and newer ones like the Flame Towers, from the top of the Maiden Tower.

Make sure you stop at one of the traditional restaurants by the gate (on a Saturday they will be full of local families). The waiters will bring you an array of little dishes often jewelled with pomegranate seeds or strewn with fresh herbs, and towers of steaming fresh bread.

The Heydar Aliyev Centre with a view of the main city beyond

Where to stay:  We stayed in the Sultan Inn which is big on character, a great location in the old city, with friendly staff. Our room was like being in a cosy gentleman’s club with polished dark furniture, thick curtains, occasional tables and plush sofas. It might not suit families with very small children or if you insist on minimalism.

Baku is a city with one foot in the past and one in the future. If you like to potter about really getting to know a place, warts and all, this one is for you.

Suggested by Ed at Dubai Travel Blog

Georgia is a great destination for UAE long weekends. It’s only 3.5 hours away from Dubai by plane and UAE residents tend to get a free visa on arrival or visa requirements are not that strict ( please do check for your nationality ).

Gudauri Georgia: Image Credit Ed Suyo

Located at the intersection of Europe and Asia, Georgia has beautiful landscapes, historical landmarks and churches, rich culture and claims it is the birthplace of wine.

If you’ve been a long-time resident of the UAE, the gorgeous views of Georgia’s countryside will definitely be a welcome sight to the eyes. It has four seasons so even if you visit the country during one season, you can still explore it again at a different date of the year and see it in a different light.

I would recommend you try and go on a city tour of Tblisi (the capital city), go on a day tour of Mtshketa and wine tour at Kakheti region. If you have more time to spare, do head to Gudauri for some snow and ski adventures during the winter season.

As the UAE’s closest neighbour, Oman is just a short flight or drive away so easily accessible for a long weekend away from the UAE. Fly to the capital Muscat in less than an hour or take the scenic route by car, it’s longer but quite spectacular ( You can see our road-tripping guide with distances here ).

Alternatively, you can fly to Salalah or drive north to Musandam via Fujairah or Ras al Khaimah.

Western Hajar Mountain region, Oman

Suggested by jo brett from an expat abroad.

Hajar Mountains

With its dramatic mountain ranges and culture, Oman offers a slower pace of living to the UAE. Omani people are very welcoming and the country offers so many different experiences from outdoor adventures to luxury hotels. Go off-roading, hike in the mountains, swim in a wadi, camp on the beach or go diving, it’s all possible in a weekend in Oman.

Take a glimpse into the past in the old capital of Nizwa with a trip to the ancient fort and souk. A must visit is the ancient car-free mountain village of Misfat al Abreyeen. The village has an air of serenity, they still use the ancient ‘ falaj ‘ irrigation system and it’s awash with lush vegetation and crops.

Where to stay:  There are many fabulous Oman hotels but one of our favourites to date is the Alila Jabal Akhdar , a five-star mountain retreat, perched high on the top of the Al Hajar mountains.

Alila Jabal Akhdar

Expect breathtaking scenery, luxurious suites and villas, first-rate facilities and service. Fully committed to sustainability and eco-tourism the hotel offers delicious traditional and international cuisine using fresh organic produce grown on site or locally sourced. Outdoor activities include yoga, cycling, hiking, climbing and cave adventures.

Little adventurers are welcome in the Play Alila programme. Kids can explore the onsite Butterfly Trail, fly kites at sunset or enjoy supervised play sessions. Alila Jabal Akhdar offers something for everyone, the adventurer who wants to explore, wellness at Spa Alila or simple relaxation by the pool.

Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Suggested by keri from our globetrotters.

Nothing beats the raw, natural beauty of heading to the where the Hajar Mountains meet the Strait of Hormuz.  The Musandam Peninsula has earned itself the nickname the “Norway of Arabia” for good reason. Sailing amongst the dramatic fjords you are almost guaranteed to see pods of dolphins at play as traditional dhow boats float by and fisherman can be seen at work in their tiny traditional villages, scattered in the foothills.

Dolphin spotting in Musandam, Oman

Some come to Musandam to enjoy the challenge of climbing the dramatic khors that abruptly jut into the ocean, or to snorkel and enjoy water sports in the stunning, calm waters.

Mostly it’s a place to come to enjoy the sheer peace and tranquillity between the water and mountains. The drive itself from Ras Al Khaimah is one of the most beautiful in the region with the road hugging the hillside as it wraps its way around to the regional capital of Khasab.

The journey can be made in 2 hours by car from Dubai (3 hours from Abu Dhabi), but you do need to factor in border crossing time at Al Darah which can vary (expect it to be significantly longer on a holiday weekend). Make sure you have your paperwork in order before travelling by car including ownership and insurance papers, as well as passports and exit fees, as well as your Omani eVisa.

The harbour in Khasab, Musandam Oman a great road trip from Dubai

Where to stay: If not camping or sleeping on your dhow boat, good options are the Atana Khasab Hotel , or sister hotel Atana Musandam Resort (dry).  Both offer family rooms, pool and dining options and are lovely places for basing yourself before and after exploring on the water. You can transit between the two hotels for a variety of dining options.

Muscat, Oman

Suggested by meghna from love, life & little one.

I always tell my husband, that one of the main reasons why I married him, was because he lived in Muscat. I remember, falling instantly in love with Muscat, during my holiday some 7 years back. Being in Muscat is like living on a beautiful heritage walk.

Beautiful Muscat at Sunset

A city nestled between the sea and the mountains. The locals so friendly, the food so rich, so yummy, no high rises, good quality of life, aesthetic city planning with gardens in the roundabout, clean roads, and vast sky, where the sun shines and stars twinkle in the night.  Coming from a noisy and busy city like Mumbai, Muscat was a laidback, cultural paradise to me and a paradigm shift for me too.

Now that I live in Dubai, it is my absolute favourite long weekend destination.  Whether you want to drive or fly, it is so convenient, budget-friendly, understated and naturally beautiful as a contrast to the extravagance of Dubai.

See our detailed guide on how to drive between Dubai and Muscat

I love Muscat for its wide range of outdoor activities. You can go dolphin watching, you can lounge in the lazy river at the Shangri-la, you can do a barbeque by the beach at Yeti, or you can drive a little further and get awed by the natural caves at Al Hoota.

If you want desert, you have it! If you want to climb a mountain, you’ve got it! If you want springs, culture walk, stay at an Oasis, or water sports on the beach, you have got it all.

What’s not to love??

There’s a great guide here to all the best day trips from Muscat.

The Omani desert near Muscat. Image credit: Meghna Dixit

My 2 favorites, must-see/must do places in Muscat are:

  • Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque: It is truly magnificent.
  • Dolphin Watching Cruise: It’s a beautiful experience and the waters in Muscat are just a different shade of blue and green. Good for eyes, soothing for the soul

See our full guide to tackling Muscat with kids here

Where to stay: I highly recommend Shangri-la Barr Al Jissah Hotel if you are travelling with family and kids.

If you are on a romantic holiday, then stay in Chedi Muscat and don’t miss their Couple Spa or stay in Al Bustan Palace and get transported to the royal luxuries of the Middle East. I also recommend going to “ The View” at Al Hamra region in Oman to live in this luxury eco-resort tucked away in a scenic valley, it offers an exclusive vacation experience.

Cars in the desert - advertisement to sign up to the facebook group for Family travel in the Middle East

Fujairah, UAE

Suggested by david from out & about uae.

Approximately three hours from the capital by car (2 hours from Dubai) is the Emirate of Fujairah . An area of rocky outcrops, isolated beaches and a landscape quite unlike anywhere else in the UAE. Fujairah makes up the majority of the country’s east coast and is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to get away from it all. A wealth of cultural attractions and long stretches of untouched beaches are what make this Emirate truly unique.

Friday Market - Souk al Juma, Fujairah

Don’t miss the  Friday Market  (also know as Souq al Juma) in the mountainous town of Masafi which is a great place to stop for snacks, a coconut or a spot of shopping. The market has everything from colourful plants, right through to fruits and vegetables, Omani sweets, terracotta pottery and household items. It is also said to be one of the best places to purchase a carpet in the UAE.

Just outside Fujairah’s city centre lies  Al Hayl Castle . Despite being the most difficult of the local attractions to access, it’s the most rewarding. A strategically placed fort high upon the mountainside, the area is also known as the ‘fortress mountain. and provides exceptional views of the surrounding area.

long weekend trips from dubai

Al Bidya Mosque  (also known as the Othmanian Mosque) is the oldest in the UAE. Remarkably, no timber was used in its construction, instead one central column in used to support the roof and four domes. The mosque is unique in design as it does not have a minaret and despite its age, is still a functioning mosque, so ensure you dress respectfully if you plan on visiting.

The Emirate of Fujairah is also the only place in the UAE to experience bull butting , which takes place on Friday afternoon at around 5pm on the corniche. Despite any preconceptions that you may have, this is not a sport in which the animals are harmed. Rather a competition of strength, in which the gigantic bulls have to push each other out of a marked circle. Much like wrestling, the stronger bull is the winner and they are prized by their owners.

Iammai pool at Fairmont Fujairah. Image Credit: David Tapley

Where to stay: Our favourite reason for visiting Fujairah is relaxation. A place where the craggy Hajar Mountains meet the Indian Ocean. The Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort & Spa   is one of our favourite properties in the region, making for a luxurious escape from the world and the first art-inspired hotel in the UAE.

180 generously sized rooms, monochromatic in design and with a distinctive Arabesque touch make for a charming property with some excellent restaurants (don’t miss fine dining seafood spot The Copper Lobster) and a firm focus on family.

You can find our full guide to Fujairah Family Beach Resorts here.

Those with children will appreciate the inflatable water park, Aqua Bounce, and the Lava Beach Club designed in fiery hues of red, orange and yellow to emphasise the feeling of being inside a volcanic crater.

Looking for a relaxing resort break with kids club?  Our next two suggestions will see you through the next long weekend in style:

Hilton Ras al Khaimah Resort & Spa

Suggested by clementina from dubaimums.com.

As a family with two young kids, we really appreciate the city “escapes” in the weekends, as often as possible. We don’t want to travel far and we enjoy exploring our host country. Therefore, I’ll tell you why “We love Hilton Ras Al-Khaimah Resort  &Spa”.

Hilton Ras Al Khaimah view of the pools

We spent there just one night and two days and we were so sorry to leave. What we look for at a hotel when booking is to have a Kids Club. The weekend is about spending time as a family but also for us, parents, to enjoy time together, over a cuppa on the beach or at the spa. It’s relaxation time for us, too. Hilton RAK Resort & Spa has a big Kids Club that our girls enjoyed very much, doing all kind of activities, from building blocks and watering plants to dress-up and painting.

See our full guide to Ras Al Khaimah Family Resorts here

I call this resort “the swimming pool heaven” as really, there are so many pools, connected to each other or just separate that the girls mainly spent their time in the swimming pool, never getting bored. What we enjoyed, as adults, was the walk around the resort, taking breaks at the beach bars with live music.

Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort and Spa, Sri Lanka

Suggested by asha from abu dhabi review.

A lot of people who head to Sri Lanka spend their time trekking from one town to the next to witness the beauty and culture of the country.  However, for those who need a base camp to call home for a few weeks, Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort and Spa which is around 4 hours away from the airport, can give you everything your family could desire.

Shangri-la Hambantota Sri lanka

The resort has a stunning and spacious, open-air feel to it, overlooking the southern coast of Sri Lanka and is surrounded by a field of green (formally a coconut plantation) and a world of nature and wildlife.

The resort’s outdoor facilities include areas that provide mesmerising views across the ocean, three pools (one specifically for adults only), a splash park and 23ft high trapeze for all acrobat enthusiasts. The kids club runs daily from 9am-7pm and offers lots of different activities including circus school. The pools also have water slides and a floating zorb.

Check out some incredible highlights to include in a Sri Lanka itinerary

Other family activities include tours outside of the resort.  The Riverboat safari along the Walawe river offers the chance to see birds, crocodiles and the mouth of the river where it meets the Indian Ocean.

The highlight for some is the Elephant Transit Home in Udawlawe, which gets you close up to elephants, peacocks and monkeys in their natural habitat.

Here Are Five Of The Best Long Weekend Getaways From Dubai

long weekend trips from dubai

Planning a short break for the upcoming long weekend? Here’s some inspiration…

A public holiday has just been announced for Sunday, April 23, and for many, this means a three-day weekend.

This gives us exactly two weeks to plan a long weekend getaway, and luckily, there are plenty of incredible destinations within easy reach of Dubai.

Here are just a few of our ideas…

Read: 3 Island Holiday Destinations Off The UAE Coast Travel Calendar: Our Monthly Guide To The Best Destinations for 2017

STAYCATION: Glamping in the Dubai Desert

long weekend trips from dubai

A night under the stars in the heart of the desert? Yes, please.

Book an Arabian Adventures overnight safari, and they’ll pick you up and take you out into the pristine Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, about a 45-minute drive from the city. You’ll enjoy all of the classic desert safari experiences, like a falcon show, dune bashing, and a camel ride, before arriving at the beautiful campsite.

Don’t worry, this is most definitely “glamorous camping” – your tent contains a double bed with fresh linen, and there are washrooms complete with flushing toilets.

The experience costs Dhs945 per adult, which covers transport, accommodation and activities, as well as a barbecue dinner, drinks and shisha. For more information, check out the  website .

CLOSE TO HOME: Fujairah

long weekend trips from dubai

Fujairah is the only emirate located on the Gulf of Oman, and its turquoise waters offer some of the best scuba-diving and snorkeling in the UAE.

A tropical escape to Fujairah is only an hour’s drive from Dubai. We recommend a stay at the Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort, located within the coastal region of Dibba. This luxury resort opened its doors in December, and offers all kinds of activities, from hiking to water sports to poolside lounging (unfortunately, there’s no beach access just yet, as the resort is still building its beach club – however, a free shuttle will take you to a neighbouring hotel’s private beach).

Rooms start from Dhs800 a night. For more information visit the website .

PACK YOUR PASSPORT: Muscat, Oman

long weekend trips from dubai

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a city rich in natural beauty, culture and architectural treasures.

The best part? It’s only an hour’s flight from Dubai, with flydubai flights available for the long weekend from Dhs405. Or you can check out this Flight Centre deal from Dhs1800 which includes return economy class airfares and two nights’ accommodation at the Intercontinental Muscat.

Don’t miss the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the only mosque in Oman open to non-Muslims. And be sure to pick up some souvenirs and spices at the famous Muttrah Souk, one of the oldest bazaars in the Arab world.

SHOPPING BREAK: Beirut, Lebanon

long weekend trips from dubai

In recent years, Lebanon’s capital city has become one of the Middle East’s top style destinations – and it’s not hard to see why, with so many Lebanese designers making their mark on the fashion world.

Make sure to pack light, or even bring a spare suitcase for your purchases. Flights from Dubai to the capital city of Amman take just over three hours, and start from Dhs365 with flydubai. Here, you can check out ancient Roman ruins, float the day away in the Dead Sea, and get amongst the city’s thriving nightlife.

If you can wrangle an extra day off, you’ll also be able to book a trip to Petra (about a four-hour drive from Amman). Now considered one of the new seven wonders of the world, this famous city of stone is undoubtedly Jordan’s most popular tourist attraction.

Weekend trips from Dubai to Ras al-Khaimah

Ras al-Khaimah

Located to the north of Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah is another of the Emirates that make up the UAE. With great beaches, a fascinating Old Town, and the highest peak in the country, Ras al-Khaimah is one of the most popular destinations for a weekend getaway from Dubai.

Distance from Dubai:

You can reach Ras al-Khaimah from Dubai in around an hour and 20 minutes by car.

Our activity recommendations:

  • Hit the beach: The beaches of this emirate are almost endless, and the almost always hot and sunny weather of the country makes them an ideal place to cool off. Flamingo Beach is the main beach in the city itself, but you can also head further afield to beaches near Al-Marjan Island. You'll find public beaches sitting shoulder to shoulder with resort beaches where you can book a lounger and have access to all the amenities you could possibly want for a memorable beach day. No wonder this is one of the popular weekend getaways from Dubai.
  • Dhayah Fort: It's often thought that the UAE is lacking culture, but actually, this part of the Middle East has a rich history that you can explore at historical monuments like Dhayah Fort. Located just outside the town of Ras al-Khaimah, the 16th-century fort protected the area until it was partially ruined in the 1891 battle between the Emirates and British forces. Now, the fortress makes an atmospheric place to explore, and the views from the damaged battlements are worth the journey alone.
  • Khatt Springs: This area to the south of the city is rich in mineral hot springs that are pumped into swimming pools separated by gender. Take a soak in the mineral-rich waters and take advantage of their supposedly healing properties. If nothing else, it's a very relaxing way to experience this emirate.

Best season to visit:

There's no bad time to visit this year-round emirate. As with all of the UAE, though, you should be aware that summers can be oppressively hot, so plan lots of indoor activities with air conditioning if you're visiting at this time of year.

Weekend trips to Abu Dhabi from Dubai

The capital city of the UAE, Abu Dhabi, is easily reached from Dubai and offers just about everything you need for a memorable weekend trip. Home to the best restaurants, hotels, resorts, and activities in the region, this is a city you won't soon forget, no matter how you like to spend your time.

It's 140 km from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, so expect the drive to take around an hour and a half.

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: This beautiful structure made of stunning white marble is the most popular attraction in Abu Dhabi. First opened in 2007, the mosque combines Ottoman, Fatimid, and Mameluke architectural influences to create something truly unique. Non-Muslims are allowed inside at any time outside of daily prayer times, and there are even free guided tours that can explain more about the gorgeous architecture and the importance of this stunning building.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi: The top museum in the Middle East, the Louvre Abu Dhabi displays art and historic artifacts from around the world and across the centuries to tell the whole story of human civilization in one single cultural institution. Home to works by some of the biggest names in art history, this museum is the sister organization of the Paris Louvre and is a wonderful place to visit for art lovers.
  • Qasr Al Watan: The striking presidential palace of the UAE is open to the public and is a fascinating place to learn more about the history and culture of the region. The palace contains a House of Knowledge that explains Islamic contributions to science, art, and history, and the public library is a great spot to delve into the history of the UAE. At night, the palace is lit up by a stunning light show, so it's a great place to visit at any time of day or night.

This is a year-round destination with no particular best time to visit, though, as always, be warned that summers can be extremely hot.

Al Qudra Lake weekend trip from Dubai

Al Qudra Lake

Located within the Saih al Salam Desert on the southern end of Dubai, Al Qudra Lake is the perfect place to escape the heat and noise of the city. Although this lake is man-made, it's still a great place for nature lovers since it is part of a wider nature reserve that is home to dozens of species of birds and desert plants, making it an interesting place to explore.

It's only around 60 km from Dubai to Al Qudra Lake, so you can make the drive in only one hour.

  • Camping: Had enough of the luxury hotels of Dubai? This is a popular destination for camping under the glorious stars of the desert. Although it often gets crowded, the many man-made lakes and dunes of the area mean it's not hard to find a place to set up in seclusion and enjoy this unique desert environment.
  • Birdwatching: The environment may be artificial, but that doesn't mean it isn't an ideal home for many species of birds, both native and migratory. In this often arid landscape, the lake makes a perfect oasis for many species of birds, including ducks, swans, flamingos, and more exotic species like the endangered Steppe Eagle. This area is also home to other wildlife, like desert foxes, so keep an eye out for the many species of animals that call this place home.
  • Cycling: Al Qudra Cycling Track is one of the best cycling routes in the whole country, covering an astonishing 86 km. You can easily rent a bike at several locations along the track and head out to explore this region on two wheels, getting some exercise while you appreciate the scenery just outside Dubai.

Summer may be a little too hot to enjoy the outdoor activities here. Better to visit in the winter when the temperatures are much more manageable.

Weekend trips from Dubai to Al Ain

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the standout attractions of the entire UAE. Known as the Garden City because of the presence of the Al Ain oasis, the surprisingly green city is one of the best weekend getaways from Dubai.

Al Ain lies around 150 km from Dubai, so it takes about an hour and a half to drive from one city to the other.

  • Wadi Adventure: This man-made water sports adventure is the place to go rafting and kayaking in the UAE. The rivers may be artificial, but the thrills are very real as you explore this thrilling waterpark. With instruction and equipment rental readily available, this is a great place to learn a new sport.
  • Al Ain Zoo: A great family activity in Al Ain, the zoo is home to more than 4000 individual animals covering hundreds of different species. Get up close and personal with native wildlife or see charismatic animals from around the world, such as lions, giraffes, and meerkats.
  • The Camel Market: For centuries, camels have been absolutely essential to life in the UAE. And although their importance has declined with the building of roads suitable for motorcars, camels remain an important part of the culture of this area. The Camel Market is a place where locals go to buy and sell camels, and it's a unique attraction that's ideal for getting a glimpse into this side of Arab culture. You can also book a camel safari from here if you want to spend more time with these towering animals.

Any time of year is a good time to visit Al Ain.

Dubai weekend trip to Jebel Jais

The highest peak in the UAE, Jebel Jais is in the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah and is a fantastic place to explore for fans of the outdoors.

At 160 km from Dubai, Jebel Jais can be reached with a drive of around two hours.

  • Drive to the summit: The highest peak in the UAE, Jebel Jais attracts adventure enthusiasts from around the world. A 35 km long road climbs to the peak of the mountain, but the switchback turns and elevation are not for the faint of heart. However, thanks to the prominence of this major mountain, the views from the top are magnificent. Try to time your visit at sunset to really make the most out of this stunning place.
  • Zip Line: If you really want to get your adrenaline flowing, take advantage of the world's longest zip line that rushes down from the summit of the mountain. Racing along the zip line is the closest you'll ever likely get to flying, so it's definitely not an experience to miss if you're an adrenaline junkie.

The elevation of the mountain means it's cooler at the top, so this can be a good place to avoid the heat of summer. However, if you want to catch a sunset, winter might be a better option since the sun sets earlier.

Best weekend trips from Dubai

The city of Dubai itself has more than enough to keep you busy for a long time. If you only have, say, three days to spend in Dubai, you'll barely have enough time to squeeze in everything you want to do in town.

However, the UAE is a small country - so small that you can almost drive from one end of the country to the other in less than five hours. That makes it ideal for the best day trips from Dubai and some spectacular weekend getaways. Leave your bags behind at a Dubai luggage storage facility and take advantage of the country's small size and many things to do by heading out on one of these memorable weekend trips. You'll learn more about the culture and history of this unique country and get to enjoy some of the very best activities it has to offer.

7 lastminute long weekend getaways from Dubai

UAE residents still have two long weekends to look forward to before the end of the year, which can only mean one thing – time to plan that last-minute getaway.

The Prophet Mohammed’s birthday will be marked on Friday, September 29 , while UAE National Day celebrations are expected to bring a long weekend starting on Friday, December 1 .

Whether your ideal long weekend trip involves beachside lounging or city exploring, from Dubai , you can have either within an easy four-hour flight.

1. Muscat, Oman

While Dubai’s laidback, rocky neighbour may be just a short hop across the border (Muscat is an hour’s flight from DXB), it’s far enough for a complete change of pace – and scenery. Head for the one of the luxury resorts dotted along its ragged coastline, such as the new Jumeirah or long-time favourite the Chedi, where you’ll be enveloped by Oman’s unique sense of lowkey luxury. Here, no one is in a rush, the mountainous air offers a welcome break from Dubai’s September humidity, and days are best spent poolside with your phone firmly on do not disturb. And if you are craving culture, pop by Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque or frankincense-laden stalls of Mutrah souq en route to or from the airport – truly the best of both worlds.

2. Tbilisi, Georgia

September is one of the best times to visit Georgia and its capital Tbilisi, as the summer heat begins to subside and on the outskirts of the city, residents gather for one of the most jubilant times in their annual calendar – the Rtveli wine harvest. During the harvest, residents gather to pick grapes, feast and crush fruit with their feet in a traditional wooden Satsnakheli to the tune of age-old folksong. When you’re done sampling wine in the hills, head back to the city to fill your stomach. Tbilisi’s best restaurants serve up modern takes on traditional Georgian food, from gooey, cheesy khachapuri to steaming khinkali dumplings. Walk it all off while taking in the city’s burgeoning street art scene and unique brutalist architecture, before kicking back with a visit to the famed sulphur baths.

3. Maldives

The Maldives might feel like an indulgent place to visit on impulse, but if all-out luxury and relaxation is what you seek, there’s no better place to find it. For a short stay, it’s best to choose a resort that’s within an easy speedboat ride of Male, such as the One&Only Reethi Rah, the dhoni-shaped overwater villas at Como Cocoa Island or Kurumba – just ten minutes from the airport – that’s still going strong five decades after opening.

4. Petra, Jordan

If Petra has long been on your Middle-East bucket list, using a long weekend for a last-minute visit is a great way to finally get it ticked off. This is definitely less of a relaxing long weekend, so expect a packed itinerary and to leave more tired than you arrived – but Petra is more than worth it. After landing into capital Amman, a three-hour flight from Dubai, arrange for a driver or guide to take you to Petra – another three hours into the southwestern mountains. Many guides offer routes that stop at the Dead Sea and other historic and cultural sites en-route – but they might be better saved for another visit if you’re tight on time. Two days is enough to discover the full mystery and splendour of this ancient Nabataean city, which was once the capital of trade for spices, metals and other precious goods more than two thousand years ago. We suggest enlisting the help of a private guide to really get the most out of your visit, they’ll be able to point out several incredible and oh-so-easily missed details, like the carvings that depict where wedding ceremonies would have been held or the cleverly concealed drainage systems carved into  these towering rose-hued cliffs.

5. Beirut, Lebanon

In spite of all of its troubles, Beirut consistently proves itself to be an irresistible getaway destination from Dubai, and it’s not hard to see why. With exceptional dining, nightlife and a good variety of accommodation options, from heritage brands to boutique hotels, it’s a perennial crowd-pleaser, especially in late September, when it enjoys the last of the Mediterranean summer. The Sursock Museum has reopened after sustaining considerable damage in the 2020 port explosion, and the Gemmayze and Mar Mikhael neighbourhoods are as energetic as they’ve ever been. Don’t miss Beit Kanz, a flower-filled cultural hub and restaurant in a restored historical landmark building that celebrates Lebanon’s creative community, craft heritage and culinary art.

Understated Bahrain doesn’t receive the same attention as many of its Gulf neighbours, but there’s plenty to do on a long weekend. This is a destination with a rich history, from restored merchant houses to forts, Dilmun burial mounds, and the UNESCO World Heritage certified Bahrain Pearling Path, a 3.5-kilometre trail leading from the seashore to the heart of Muharraq.  It’s also well served by luxury resorts, including outposts of Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah, for those looking for an easy and relaxed family getaway.

7. Istanbul, Turkey

Straddling the Bosphorus strait, with one foot in Asia and one in Europe, Istanbul is both literally and figuratively a place where cultures collide to beautiful, chaotic and enthralling effect. Its food alone makes it worth a visit, from its rooftop restaurants to its riverside street food stands – it’s best to follow your nose and be led by your stomach. Between meals, find time to explore its many stunning mosques, from the Hagia Sophia to the Blue Mosque next door, via a wander through an historic bazaar. And don’t leave  without a hammam visit, not only for a relaxing scrub down, but to take in these stunning ancient bathhouses.

A 10-minute stroll away, Sharjah Art Museum is a must for fans of contemporary Arab art.

Kalba is the perfect day trip for wildlife watching

This east coast exclave of Sharjah is a great place to see some of Arabia’s elusive wildlife. Keen birdwatchers should bring their binoculars, as Khor Kalba’s mangroves are an important habitat for the beautiful white-collared kingfisher. On the outskirts of the city, Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre is home to critically endangered Arabian leopard, Arabian wolf, tahr and desert lynx. At the nearby Kalba Bird of Prey Centre , free-flying demonstrations take place twice a day in the outdoor amphitheater (except Mondays).

Take a road trip to Jebel Jais, the UAE's tallest peak

Go diving or snorkeling in the waters near Fujairah

Stretching along the Gulf of Oman, Fujairah has better visibility and more diverse marine life than the waters off Dubai. Roughly 350ft (100m) offshore at Al Aqah, Snoopy Island is popular with snorkelers, thanks to schools of clownfish and regular turtle sightings. Local dive centers offer shore dives and boat trips to popular sites such as Dibba Rock, Coral Gardens and various wrecks.

How to get to Fujairah from Dubai: Al Aqah is 100 miles (165km) northeast of Dubai. Rent a car or check whether the dive centers include transport from Dubai in their packages.

Cruise the inlets of Oman's Musandam Peninsula

Dubbed "the Norway of Arabia," the Omani exclave of Musandam is famous for its fjord-like inlets and aquamarine waters. Numerous companies offer cruises aboard traditional wooden dhows, with dolphin sightings all but guaranteed. Tours typically include round-trip transport and a buffet lunch, with plenty of time for swimming and snorkeling. Boats depart from Dibba on the east coast or Khasab at the northern tip of the peninsula, with the latter offering more spectacular scenery.

This day trip from Dubai requires some advance planning. If you're planning to go to Dibba, know that you cannot enter the Omani side of Dibba (Dibba Al Baya) as an independent traveler. All people entering here need to have a free permit, which is provided by any of Dibba Al Baya's tour operators when you make a booking. The process is exceedingly easy for those on UAE tourist visas. When booking your activities, email a copy of your passport photo page and UAE entry stamp page to the tour operator; they will then organize the permit and meet you at the border with it in hand.

How to get to the Musandam Peninsula from Dubai: Dibba is less than two hours' drive from Dubai, while Khasab is three hours each way. Check Oman's visa requirements before you go.

Great choices for weekend road trips from Dubai! I have done some of them but not to Ras Al Khaimah, and Liwa. I love your pictures. Hatta Dam and Hajar Mountains look beautiful! My favorite road trip was to Fujeirah. 🙂

This was a very informative post. Had no idea there were so many interesting things to do in UAE. It’s one of the places I would love to visit.

There was so much to do in Dubai, we only did one excursion for a night in the desert. But great to know that there are so many options for day trips from Dubai! I would definitely want to visit the Hajjar area. So fascinating to find large water reserves in such a desert area. But then a green oasis like Al Ain might also be fascinating. The beaches in Dubai were jam packed. Maybe a visit to Marjan Island for the beach might be better. I will keep this post for a return visit. And plan more day trips!

You would love some offbeat day trips from Dubai as they are very less crowded and very beautiful with unique natural landscape too.

I’m amazed at how much there is to do when you travel just a short distance from Dubai! The deserts are mesmerising. I’d love to do some of these activities, although camels don’t particularly like me from past experience!

This post makes me so nostalgic. Having spent my childhood here, I did manage to get to most of these places. In fact all, save the lake. I have some wonderful memories of Hatta and Khor Fakkan. I loved the beach in the latter the most. Thanks for sharing this

Now these places have developed a lot as compared to your childhood, like having world’s longest zipline, adventurous trails and hikes surrounding these natural places.

So interesting. Never knew about these weekend trips from Dubai. Certainly changes how I think about a trip to Dubai. Liwa desert and other places look great.

You would love this Dubai and its nearby attractions.

Wow! Great blog site you have. Packed with great information and fantastic photos. Will follow on all SM! Cheers!

Thanks for liking the blog and finding it useful.

While this 3 days itinerary is ideal for first-timers to Dubai and returning visitors alike who haven’t seen much of Dubai yet, it is especially great for those who wish to get a slice of everything that this city offers within a short period of time.

There is so much to see and do in Dubai that most of the time it can be overwhelming (and kind of impossible) to cover it all in a few days. I, therefore, suggest you slow down and go a bit deeper as you see the city’s mix of iconic, quirky and timeless attractions at a super relaxed pace.

Moreover, I have created this program with the assumption that you will have full three days at your disposal (from early morning on the first day till late evening on the third) to spend your weekend in the city.

Is Weekend in Dubai Enough for a Trip?

Usually, it is rather easy to visit many cities around the world on a weekend city break. But with Dubai it’s somewhat different.

On the one hand, Dubai is big and grows so fast. It offers so much entertainment and so many options for vacations that many cities combined don’t offer even a fraction of that, so a weekend in Dubai, even a long one, can be too little time.

On the other hand, Dubai is a pretty expensive city. If you stay there for a long time, you need quite a high amount of money, particularly for accommodation and food. And in many ways, Dubai is similar to other major metropolitan areas. So if you traveled a lot and visited many cities and currently travel on a budget, it is quite possible to see Dubai’s many attractions just in a few days.

Of course, in that case if you go to Dubai for a long weekend or 3 days during the week, you will have to give up visiting the water park, many museums, skip shopping in local malls or some other incredible Dubai sights.

But yet it is very possible to see all the main attractions in a short period of time. Just be ready to wake up early, end your day late, and pack your days with lots of action!

Where to Base Yourself on a Long Weekend in Dubai?

With this little time, you want to stay close to one of Dubai’s centers (such as the old district Al Fahidi, the area around the Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina, or anywhere near them) to be able to get places easily.

I’d avoid staying in Jumeirah Beach, La Mer, or the Palm area if your goal is to do lots of sightseeing. Getting out of those neighborhoods can be time consuming (unless you rent a car) and you may end up spending more time on the road than on actual sightseeing.

3 days in Dubai

Here are a few hotel suggestions for a mid-budget that I’d choose for myself and that are excellent picks for 3 days in Dubai. They go for about $80-$150 per night (depending on the season), are centrally located, and from each of them, it is easy enough to explore the city on your own terms and do independent sightseeing.

ROVE CITY WALK ( pop-up hotel ) – luxury hotel relatively on a budget, located between Dubai Mall and City Walk Mall near the iconic Sheikh Zayed Road.

CARLTON DUBAI CREEK ( chain hotel ) – 4 star hotel in Old Dubai near Spice Souk (bazaar) and across Al Fahidi. Dubai Creek locates it, so if you book a room on the creek side, you can get a beautiful view of Dubai’s panorama. Baniyas Square metro station is located within less than 10 min walk.

OAKS LIWA HEIGHTS ( all-suites hotel ) – in the JLT area near Dubai Marina, great for those who’d love to cook on their weekend in Dubai as all rooms are suites that come with kitchenettes or full-size kitchens.

XVA ART HOTEL ( heritage ) – within the heart of historic Al Bastakiya where guests can soak up local culture and feel the history through their stay.

How to Spend Long Weekend in Dubai Itinerary

Day 1 (friday) in dubai: early morning wandering, city tour, beach/park time & evening dinner cruise.

weekend in Dubai

Since this is a weekend in Dubai itinerary, I make suggestions for three days from Friday to Sunday. And to get the best out of your short 3 days in Dubai visit, make sure that you touch down at the emirate either in the evening on Thursday or in the early morning on Friday.

If you arrive in the morning and cannot check into the hotel, then drop your luggage and take a quick walk in the area where you’ll stay (I assume you chose one of the popular neighborhoods I suggested above) just to get a feel of your surroundings. There will be definitely a lot to check out.

If you arrive on the previous day, then don’t sleep for too long, have breakfast (if staying in Al Bastakia’s historic neighborhood, go to the Arabian Tea House for an authentic Emirati breakfast) and dedicate a bit of time to self-walk. Emirati breakfast, which is similar in some ways to Turkish breakfast , is a must if you are looking to have a cultural experience in Dubai.

traditional Emirati restaurant

But do not walk for too long as on a short visit to such a city it would be better to get an introduction through a tour.

Morning – Join the Dubai City Tour

Following a brief self-guided stroll, you can embark on a half-day city sightseeing tour . It is a must-do as this tour lets you take in the region’s both surefire icons and hidden gems in four to five hours.

The best thing is that it comes with the services of a professional guide and includes roundtrip hotel transfers.

Hear the stories behind those parts of Dubai that are drenched in history and culture, such as Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood , Dubai Museum within the city’s oldest fort (Al Fahidi) etc, and indulge in some quick shopping at the traditional Arabian souks or bazaars like Gold Souk , Textile Souk , and Spice Souk .

Al Fahidi Old Dubai

A drive on a bus through the stunning boulevards and neighborhoods of Dubai Marina , Bluewaters Island , and Sheikh Zayed Road gives you an overview of the city’s ever dynamic and pulsating sights. Apart from these, there will be photo ops at Jumeirah Mosque , Jumeirah Beach , Madinat Jumeirah and Atlantis , The Palm Resort to name a few.

We personally went on this tour from this company as they offer excellent overview tours of the entire city. But GetYourGuide organizes similar tours but oriented more on separate neighborhoods and in-depth experiences in them. Like this private tour with locals for example or a combined Dubai Old Town and street food tour .

Afternoon – Spend Time on One of Dubai’s Beautiful Beaches

After the city tour, you can choose to spend time till evening relaxing in one of the neighborhoods you liked the most (go back using metro or taxi) or go to one of the beaches, or by heading to the region’s top shopping spots.

Dubai beaches

Among beaches, in my experience, the next ones are the best not only for swimming but overall where to have a fabulous time. And they are La Mer beach which also has a beautiful boardwalk and adjacent park, Kite beach popular for kitesurfing and kayaking, or West Beach famous for Dubai Marina panorama, high-end hotels and bars.

Evening – See La Perle by Dragone Show

Wind up your first day by watching a mesmeric theatrical show, La Perle by Dragon, which is a part-aquatic and part-aerial presentation. It is a very unique spectacle that includes artistic performances, imagery and various special effects while showcasing the story of UAE’s pearl diving history.

With its cast encompassing over 65 brilliant performers from different parts of the world, this water show will take you on a fantastical journey where its every aspect is mesmerizingly pulled off under the expert direction of Franco Dragone who has won immense accolades for his jaw-dropping creations such as La Reve and Cirque de Soleil.

While there are really a lot of things to do in Dubai, I believe La Perle by Dragone show should be on the list of must-do things on any visit because it is a truly one-of-a-kind experience that captures Dubai creative spirit and presents aspirational future.

Purchase your tickets in advance since they are always limited and sell out fast. There is also a chance to combine this show with Dubai water canal cruise and dinner .

Day 2 (Saturday): Ski Dubai, Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall & Another Show

Morning – mall of the emirates with ski dubai & alserkal avenue.

Dubai is all about the malls that tuck away so many sights. This is why today I offer you to devote your time to some of the most grandiose malls that surprise with the number and uniqueness of activities.

Give an icy start to your second day in Dubai by going to Ski Dubai, a mountain-themed attraction with snow. And it is not necessary to go inside to ski on your own to have fun. Seeing this place through the glass window is no less exciting.

Mall of the Emirates

If you rent a car in Dubai for the time of your visit (which in my experience is the best bet and I explain why in my post), then on the way to the Mall of the Emirates I suggest you make a stop at the Courtyard community center with classy fountains, greenery, artsy objects, and interesting architecture.

Besides them, there is a number of lovely cafes where to have a meal or coffee. My favorite places for breakfast and morning beverages are Cassette and Boston Lane . If you don’t have breakfast included in a hotel stay, eating here would be a nice start to the day.

Overall, the Courtyard center creates an impression that you are somewhere in India but at the same time like somewhere in Turkey like Bergama or Bodrum . It shows a very different side of Dubai which is well worth seeing.

unique place in Dubai

After light breakfast, you can pop into the Alserkal Avenue hub across the road from the Courtyard. It is an artistic place with an evolving collection of amazing art galleries, old classic vintage cars, instagrammable spots, and cute cafes too. They open at 10, so it makes it perfect to visit them right after breakfast.

With these places, it is easy to lose track of time and spend half a day or even longer just here. So try to start this day 2 in Dubai early.

After you are done visiting the Courtyard and Alserkal Avenue, continue your way to the Mall of the Emirates and its indoor ski resort Ski Dubai , located inside the mall.

There, with the temperature maintained at a steady 2 degrees Celsius (35 Fahrenheit) throughout the year, this snow-filled attraction is one of the ultimate spots in the Middle East to indulge in a variety of snow activities including skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and zorbing.

If you don’t feel like going inside, find a table by the window in North 28 cafe (from there you can also partially see a penguin show) or simply go to the second floor and watch the action that takes place in Ski Dubai through the window. I’ve been to many ski resorts in Europe and never thought that going to Ski Dubai would be of any interest but it really was!

Afternoon – The Dubai Mall

Dubai

One of the most interesting places to add to any Dubai itinerary! And a bit of planning in advance will help you with the effective exploration of this massive mall at Downtown Dubai, featuring over 1200 shops, hundreds of dining venues, and of course, tonnes of leisure choices.

Shopping freaks are in for a supreme treat, while connoisseurs of taste will have quite a tough time figuring out where to grab a bite here.

Speaking of its amusement attractions, they cater to every interest. Infinity des Lumières art museum, for instance, is sure to delight art lovers. For action and thrill seekers, there is Ekart Zabeel car racing track, Dubai Ice Rink , and Play DXB  among others. There is a dedicated attraction for your little ones, such as KidZania Dubai .

And of course you can never go wrong with the incredible Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo with over 33,000 marine creatures in its giant 10 million liter tank.

Evening – Burj Khalifa ‘At the Top’ and Dubai Fountain Show

Another totally exciting and must-visit place in Dubai is Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building which stands next to the Dubai Mall. Going up to the 148th floor is once in a lifetime experience which you can’t miss especially if spending only 3 days in Dubai.

Dubai from above

With your entry tickets to its ‘At the Top’ observatory deck, you get to catch the stunning views over the whole of Dubai, covering its ocean, desert and city skyline, all from a celestial standpoint.

If this is not enough, get your tickets to Burj Khalifa Sky Level which hosts the world’s highest observation deck at a height of over 555 meters. Regardless of your ticket choice, you get to enjoy one of the world’s fastest elevator rides plus a multimedia display on Dubai’s past as part of your Burj Khalifa visit.

Back on the ground, proceed to Burj Lake that is outside of Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. The major allure here is the dancing fountain show (Dubai Fountain) set on the lake.

This aquatic performance is a definite see for its breathtaking sync of water twirls with music and light. You can watch it for free, but I would advise you to take an abra ride like on the left photo below (charges apply) or hit the dedicated Dubai Boardwalk (charge apply) if you wish to admire the show without the hindrance of any crowd.

My other favorite place where to watch Dubai fountains show is from one of the cafes in this part of the mall (the right photo below is from one of the cafes there) or from that part where you’ll find the Lounge Dubai .

Dubai abra ride

If you want to watch a show in the afternoon instead evening, then just make sure to arrive before 1 pm since afternoon fountain shows happen only at 1 pm and 1:30 pm, which by the way is excellent timing since the fountain area at that time stays rather quiet.

Night – Dubai Cruise

Cap off your second day in Dubai with an enchanting cruise along Dubai’s water at Dubai Marina or Dubai Creek.

Subject to your preference, you can go on a traditional dhow cruise (complete with buffet dinner and folk performance like Tanura dance), stylish cruise through one of the symbols of Dubai Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina evening cruise , or alternatively make it as stylish as possible with a luxury yacht charter Dubai experience.

Dubai dinner cruise

Whichever your desired cruise is, you can be assured of an unforgettable evening on Dubai’s water.

Day 3 in Dubai (Sunday): Morning Desert Safari, The View At The Palm, Spa Treatment And Departure

Morning – desert safari / hot air balloon ride.

Today, you will wake up to the most magical experiences. Be ready as you will head out to the region’s isolated desert part in the early morning.

Most exhilarating experiences such as the 4X4 dune bashing and the compelling desert sunrise views are the high points of your morning desert safari . Add to this a variety of cultural and traditional activities like camel ride, Emirati breakfast, henna tattooing, Arabian Oryx at the desert camp, and Al Qudra Lakes like with this sunrise jeep safari .

getting around Dubai

Want to heighten your desert experience in Dubai?

Nothing could probably beat a hot air balloon flight over the desert ! It lets you fly like a mighty bird over the endless stretches of desert sands for more than an hour, giving you a panoramic view over its plant and animal inhabitants.

This airborne activity is a relaxed adventure which means that it can be enjoyed by all age groups and skill levels. Dependent on your package, this activity comprises a lavish breakfast plus an array of desert inspired activities.

desert safari

Mid-Morning – The View at the Palm

After the desert safari, the company will you bring back to the hotel or one of other points around the city. From there, I suggest you head to another miracle of Dubai – The View at the Palm .

It is not just another viewing deck in Dubai. It has been designed to give you the full view of Palm Jumeirah – the huge man-made island that is a true engineering marvel, especially for its captivating palm-tree-like design complete with a crescent.

The View at the Palm is located on the 52nd level of Palm Towers which also offers some other immersive experiences to keep you occupied there.

Afternoon till Evening – Slow-Paced Walking, Spa or a Quick Drive

You can while away your time till departure by doing some last-minute shopping, checking out an activity or attraction that you have missed out on this weekend in Dubai itinerary, or simply going on a quick drive around Dubai checking other places that you’ll find in my other posts. Roads are excellent, free parking is ample, and driving is so enjoyable in this city!

Another thing to do which can be a good end to the trip is getting a stress-busting spa treatment at one of the city’s many award-winning spa facilities like Talise Ottoman Spa (at Zabeel Saray Hotel).

When getting there by car, you can also see more of the Palm and especially in the evening admire the sunset which acquires amazing colors illuminating Dubai seascape, like here:

Palm boardwalk

Night – Bid Farewell to Dubai

If your flight is late at night, then on a third day of your 3 days in Dubai itinerary pack loads of memories to take back home.

If you fly in the morning on the following day, then on the way back to the hotel from the Palm make a night stop at the Palm West Beach to catch sight of Dubai Harbor and skyscrapers in glow.

My Top Tips For Your Long Weekend In Dubai

1). Traveling to Dubai during weekends can get pricey particularly if you don’t plan your trip much in advance.

Yes, it is highly advisable to pre-book your accommodation, sightseeing tours, and airport transfers at least three to four months before your intended travel, especially if you are traveling in November-December and February through April.

2). The best time to visit Dubai is during the pleasant winter months (November to March) when the whole city is awash with festivities, seasonal attractions (like Global Village, Dubai Miracle Garden and Dubai Shopping Festival), outdoor markets, and a distinct effervescence.

desert at Expo

That said, it is not a bad idea to visit Dubai during the summer season as well (June to August). While you may not be able to indulge in outdoorsy fun but the region’s wealth indoor attractions and activities make up for it. And it comes with the bonus of low cost for accommodation, flight tickets, etc.

3). Dubai’s public transport (including Dubai Metro, public buses, ferries etc) is efficient, fast and mostly, spotless and safe.

But, with just three days, it is worthwhile to book a private transfer or hire a vehicle (with or without driver) to get around in the city. Having an international driving license if you are looking to discover Dubai on your own is not mandatory unless license from your country is not in latin language.

4). If you are planning to rely on public transport, it is ideal to stay in accommodation located in a prime city spot close to a metro station or a bus station (hotel suggestions I gave in the beginning on this post are all in prime locations and close to the metro or bus stops).

5). For utmost savings, consider buying an all-in-one or a combo pass that comes packaged with two or more Dubai attractions or activities for one single price. Like this explorer pass where you can choose 3 to 7 attractions and save money or buy a Dubai silver transport card at any ticketing machine.

Conclusion to this Long 3 Days in Dubai Itinerary

Dubai is full of incredible places! Now that you have my suggested program on how to spend a long weekend (or any other 3 days) in Dubai, simply pack your bags!

You may not have time to see everything on one trip but one thing is sure – you will have the best short vacay of your lifetime!

Tori Towey ‘relieved’ to return to Dublin after Dubai travel ban

Gráinne Ní Aodha, PA

An Irish woman is “relieved” to be back in Ireland after being subjected to a travel ban in Dubai.

Tori Towey’s case was raised this week when the Dáil was told the flight attendant from Co Roscommon had been a victim of domestic abuse and was charged with attempted suicide.

Dubai authorities had also banned her from leaving the state, the Dáil chamber heard.

On Wednesday, efforts in her case were ramped up by the Government and the Irish Embassy in the United Arab Emirates.

The Dáil was told later on Wednesday that the travel ban had been lifted, and the Detained in Dubai group said the charges against Ms Towey had also been dropped.

On Thursday morning, Radha Stirling, of Detained in Dubai, who has been speaking on Ms Towey’s behalf, posted on social media on Thursday morning: “She’s home.”

Speaking to the media on her return to Dublin, Ms Towey said: “I’m just so relieved. I can’t believe it.

“I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone; the embassy, the ambassador, the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, Mary Lou [McDonald], Claire Kerrane, obviously the media – without you guys I wouldn’t be here right now.

“Without the support of the Irish people, this is such an amazing country and I feel bad for people that don’t have the support that we have – we’re such a tight country and have each other’s backs.

“I can’t believe how fast things got going and I’m so emotional.

“And a huge thanks [to] Radha Stirling, she’s the first one that we got on to and she kicked off everything.

“The minute we spoke to her, that’s when everything kind of came to fruition and I’m just so thankful and so grateful to be back.”

Her mother Caroline said: “It is great to have her home. It has been a bit of a nightmare.

“It felt like a hostage [situation] but once it kicked off and the media started to help and we were bombarded with lots of messages of support, and we were tuning in to the Oireachtas and watching everything going on.

“So a huge thanks to the country, to our politicians, to the people.”

Travel + Leisure Readers' 10 Favorite International Airports of 2024

In our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024, readers loved easy-to-navigate airports full of entertainment across the Middle East and Asia, plus one standout from Europe.

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

If you're looking for a genuinely enjoyable airport experience, head to Asia. In the 2024 World's Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure readers ranked a majority of airports from the continent as their favorites. But the one that topped the list and dethroned an 11-year champion? A European giant.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Airports were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Check-in/security
  • Restaurants/bars

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Asian and Middle Eastern dominance is nearly complete when it comes to the 2024 World's Best Awards for international airports. This year, a monumental nine of 10 airports on the list were located in these regions — and it's perhaps little surprise why. Many of these airports are new, meaning they feature beautiful architectural designs, logical paths of navigation, and plenty of facilities to keep travelers entertained on a long layover.

Take, for instance, one voter's view of No. 8 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai: "Fantastic interior design showcasing Indian arts and crafts. Always amazes with its beauty. Efficient, user-friendly, well laid out."

Two of the top 10 airports resurfaced on the list after some time off: No. 9 Hong Kong International Airport, which was No. 6 in 2022 , and No. 10 Osaka International Airport, whose last appearance was in 2021 .

The other eight airports return to the list from last year , albeit in a different order — and that includes one very major shift. WBA Hall of Fame honoree Singapore Changi Airport has been our winner for 11 years in a row, but it's been knocked down a peg to No. 2. That's not to say that visitors find Changi subpar, though. "Changi is a true example of what airport standards should be at a minimum. I have been traveling through this airport for 30+ years, and it's always kept its high standards. Always fondly go back," wrote one voter.

As for our readers' new No. 1 pick? Read on to find the full list of the 10 best international airports in the 2024 World's Best Awards.

Istanbul Airport: Istanbul, Turkey

Jumping up six spots from last year, Istanbul Airport is our readers’ favorite international airport. Since it opened in 2018, the airport has seen more than 250 million passengers, and it isn't even complete yet. Once it is, it'll have the capacity for 200 million passengers per year, who will be able to fly to 300 destinations around the world. But even as an incomplete airport, it still makes its mark on passengers. "Istanbul Airport is one of my favorite airports to fly into," wrote one voter, who also praised the ease of navigation and friendliness of employees. "It's like a huge shopping mall with many different restaurants and a variety of cuisines that you can choose from."

At this new Turkish ice cream shop in Long Beach, the show stars rare dondurma

Erkan Gozal holds out a green ice cream cone from behind the counter

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The ice cream flips, twists and floats just out of reach, attached to one end of a long silver scooping staff being controlled by a professional trickster on the other side of the counter. The second you think you’ve firmly grasped the cone in your hand, it’s out of your reach yet again. And you realize a split second too late that you were holding a decoy cone all along.

The “ice cream show” at Galata, Long Beach’s new Turkish scoops shop, is beloved by children, but it’s just as fun and whimsical for adults. Customers have been flocking from multiple counties to get a taste since Galata debuted earlier this summer.

The reason the trickery is even possible is due to the nature of dondurma, a centuries-old Turkish ice cream style that utilizes salep (ground orchid roots) and mastic (plant resin) to create a chewy texture that’s also slower to melt than most other ice cream.

True dondurma is something of a rarity in Southern California. L.A. is home to similar flavors and even textures from Persian ice cream stalwarts such as Mashti Malone’s and Saffron and Rose, but dondurma traditionally incorporates more salep and mastic, resulting in ice cream that pulls in dramatic strings, akin to cheese, but remains firm.

“Persian people make it a little more sugary and they put saffron, and Arabic people put cardamom, which is kind of spicy,” said Istanbul-born Akin Gulec, who manages Galata. “[Dondurma is] more like European ice cream, and with less sugar. You can’t compare to U.S. ice cream, because here ice creams are more sugary and more cold, maybe — you can’t feel your mouth.”

Gulec said he has found Turkish baklava shops and even Turkish delight shops and Turkish restaurants since moving to California but has failed to find another Turkish ice cream shop anywhere in the region.

Gulec said the team didn’t expect such a rush of enthusiasm, but it was a welcome surprise. Nearly 1,000 customers have filed through the front door, some local but many who’ve made Galata a destination. The customers tell staff they’ve traveled from Santa Ana, L.A. and farther for a taste.

It’s precisely why Galata’s owners decided to open in Long Beach.

Erkan Gozal doles out a comical mountain of white Turkish ice cream onto a cone for a boy at Galata.

Mike Schochet and Eyüp Tekinbaş own the neighboring Galata Halal Restaurant and Grill, which opened last year, as well as an adjacent Turkish decor store, Istanbul Home.

Tekinbaş dreamed of opening a business in the U.S. after having launched multiple enterprises in Dubai, Qatar and Istanbul, and friend and real estate developer Schochet wanted to help bring the unique Turkish specialty to the States.

They transformed a former Japanese-restaurant space into an eye-catching corner shop, the exterior painted light pink. Inside, the pistachio-hued back wall is the same color as the most popular of their two dozen-plus flavors imported from Turkey. The nut, sometimes called “green gold,” flecks pistachio-flavored dondurma through white ribbons of milky dondurma. It’s earthy and a far cry from the often neon-tinged, artificially flavored pistachio ice creams found more readily.

A coconut-based bubble gum flavor, colored bright blue, is a top pick among children and is often featured during the “ice cream show.” Other options include kiwi, chestnut, chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Dairy-free flavors, such as blackberry or strawberry, are made simply with fruit purée, salep and sugar.

“Also, we’re not serving any toppings,” Gulec said. “We don’t have any toppings — sprinkles, M&Ms, chocolate — because we trust the taste of our ice cream.”

The dairy blend of cow and goat milk for Galata’s ice cream comes from Kahramanmaraş, a province famed for its agriculture — and especially its ice cream.

Erkan Gozal is also from the region. The shop’s master of ice cream has years of experience working with ice cream in Turkey, Jordan, China and beyond; he conducts quality control tests, trains the staff and is often the trickster pulling the ice cream cone just out of your reach.

The Subzwari family experienced the show after driving from Irvine for a taste. They’ve enjoyed dondurma in Istanbul four or five times.

“There’s some Persian ice cream stores in L.A., but Turkish is really known for that stretchy ice cream taste,” said Zeeshan Subzwari, who brought his three sons. “It’s just the whole [show] experience with the kids that makes it worthwhile. It’s so much fun, the kids look forward to it.”

According to all four family members, Galata’s ice cream tastes similar — if not identical — to the varieties they’ve tried in Turkey.

Customers don’t just visit for the dondurma. Rows of baklava and other imported treats wait near the front door in glass cases. Logs of mango Turkish delight, sheet trays of baklava in all imaginable varieties, rows of small rounded şekerpare — or semolina cookies soaked in syrup — and thick, rose-petal-coated pipes of chocolate-and-milk rolls can all be ordered by the piece and enjoyed at small tables with cups of Turkish coffee and tea.

These Turkish treats sometimes meld with the desserts, as in the case of the triangular wedge of pistachio baklava that can sandwich a thick pile of vanilla dondurma. Bombastic celebrity chef Salt Bae popularized this dessert, sometimes coating his baklava in edible gold leaf; at Galata it’s served with less flourish but still receives positive feedback from guests.

Behind the counter, shelves of imported Turkish teas — apple flavor, black tea, ginger tea — and Turkish coffee can be purchased.

The team hopes to expand the Galata ice cream brand in San Diego, Newport Beach and L.A. Schochet is scouting locations to bring a taste — and some cone-swapping trickery — to cities around Southern California soon. For now, find Galata open in Long Beach at 5201 E. 2nd St. from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Australia to Paris Nonstop Launches Friday. 17+ Hours in Economy, Anyone?

Pranjal Pande and Gordon Smith, Skift

July 10th, 2024 at 9:08 AM EDT

The Perth to Paris route marks the latest ultra-long haul service from Qantas. Even longer nonstop links from Sydney to New York and London are due to follow.

Do you call July midsummer or mid-winter? It all depends which side of a major new air route you’re on.  Come July 12, one of the year’s most hotly anticipated new flights will take to the skies for the first time.

Qantas’ nonstop link from Perth in Western Australia to Paris will launch just ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics. However, with flight times of up to 17 hours and 20 minutes, this is a marathon rather than a sprint.

Services operate four-times weekly before dropping down to thrice weekly in the second week of August.

While notable, the new route isn’t entirely without precedent. It follows a similar path to Qantas’ existing ultra-long-haul services from Perth to both London and Rome . It is operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, an aircraft designed for particularly long journeys.

An Appetite for Ultra-Long Haul

Qantas has previously reported high occupancy and passenger satisfaction on its Perth-London route. The airline said on average, around nine in every ten seats were occupied, suggesting many long-haul travelers are happy to strap in for 17+ hours to avoid layovers.

Visitors keen to maximize their time in Europe can opt for Qantas’ ‘Circle Fare’. This allows travelers to return from any of the three European cities served nonstop by the Australian airline.

The success of nonstop European flights from Perth sets the stage for Project Sunrise . This is the codename for new routes that will fly even further than Perth to Europe. Based on current schedules, Qantas will connect Sydney and Melbourne to both London and New York starting in 2026.

If realized, they will become the world’s longest nonstop passenger flights. So ambitious is the mission, that Qantas is working with Airbus for a specially optimized version of the A350-1000 aircraft to help make the route feasible. The airline has confirmed the plane will feature a bespoke ‘wellness zone’ to help passengers say healthy in the air.

Qantas to Paris isn’t the only notable new route taking flight this summer. Here are four others that should be on your radar:

American Airlines: New York JFK to Tokyo Haneda

On June 28, American Airlines completed its ‘re-inaugural flight’ between New York JFK and Tokyo Haneda. The carrier resumed the route to Tokyo’s downtown airport after an absence of 11 years. It makes the carrier the only U.S. airline to fly between the two cities.

The 6,772-mile journey comes just in time for the summer rush and will leverage American’s long-standing joint-venture agreement with Japan Airlines. The partnership is likely to be important given the dominance of Japanese carriers on the route, with All Nippon Airways also flying two daily services.

American’s new daily connection uses a Boeing 777-200ER, complementing JAL’s twice-daily flights between the airports. Notably, this isn’t AA’s most premium-heavy aircraft, typically featuring just 37 business and 24 premium economy seats.

The new link comes as parts of Japan struggle to manage a wave of inbound tourists. In an interview with Skift earlier this month , Eri Hirose, a senior director at the Japan National Tourism Office, described new measures to protect the Mount Fuji from congestion and overcrowding.

Austrian Airlines: Vienna to Boston

July 1 marked Austrian Airlines’ inaugural service connecting Vienna and Boston. The European airline is looking to take advantage of business, academic, and regular tourism traffic alike. The start of the July 4 weekend was an opportune time to kick off flights, with US airlines reporting the busiest holiday period in years .

Austrian is operating the route six-times weekly using its aging yet reliable Boeing 767s. These carry 24 in business, 30 in premium, and 157 in economy. As a member of the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines can also tap into passengers beyond its Vienna hub. This will soon include ITA Airways, following EU regulatory approval which was granted last week .

Norbert Kettner, Managing Director of the Vienna Tourist Board, pointed to the U.S. as being a key tourism market, helping the Austrian capital reach its pre-pandemic international figures in 2023. The addition of Boston means Austrian now flies to six US destinations.

Porter Airlines: Montreal to the U.S. West Coast

Paris isn’t the only Francophone city enjoying new air routes this summer. Montreal has already welcomed a slew of new connections to the U.S. West Coast. Porter Airlines kicked off the party on June 27, connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, operating three-times and four-times weekly respectively. These routes are summer seasonal, and due to end in late October.

Notably, Porter is flying its Embraer E195-E2s on the routes. While this is a relatively long flight for a regional jet, it is still comfortably within the E2’s maximum range. The carrier is also hoping to leverage its new commercial partnerships with Alaska Airlines to connect passengers up and down the West Coast, adding one-stop traffic to bolster overall profitability.

Not to be left out, United Airlines launched nonstop flights between San Francisco and Montreal on July 1. The daily service runs year-round. The carrier’s joint venture with Air Canada has allowed United to become a trans-border powerhouse in recent years, comfortably making it the largest airline in the market by number of routes and providing plenty of connecting opportunities for passengers.

The developments come just a few weeks after Canada’s Competition Bureau announced it is preparing to launch a major review of the country’s airline sector.

Qatar Airways: Further European Expansion

Qatar Airways is kicking off three new services this summer, with two of these technically route resumptions. On July 1, the Doha-based airline added its fifth destination in Germany with Hamburg. The four-times weekly operation is served by the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner – the smallest widebody aircraft in the Qatar Airways fleet.

Last month, Lisbon and Venice returned to the airline’s network. The Portuguese capital has been from the Doha departure board since the pandemic, but with travel surging past 2019 numbers, Lisbon now has a year-round service operating six-times weekly in the summer peak and five-times weekly for the rest of the year. Venice meanwhile has returned for its seasonal service with daily flights. Both routes are typically served by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

In line with its Middle Eastern competitors such as Emirates and Etihad, Qatar Airways can make more niche routes work by funneling passengers from South Asia, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific through its Doha mega-hub. This strategy sees it reach 50 destinations in Europe alone – even higher than Dubai-based Emirates.

Earlier this week, Qatar Airways announced a range of new initiatives to bolster the country’s stopover program. The new packages will remove the need for separate reservations and enable travelers in the region to streamline their travel plans through an improved booking process that incorporates flight and hotel bookings in one itinerary.
