A wonderful holiday.. comfortable hotels, a range of nice wines and good food, an introduction to the long history of the region, and an excellent guide in Daniel.
I went on this tour together with my brother and sister. We had a wonderful time; this was largely due to the excellent attention and organising skills of Daniel our fantastic guide. The tour had two themes; exploring Macedonian wines and learning about the history and culture of this remarkable country. In UK we are unaware of the classy wines of the Macedonia. There are excellent varieties of red, white and rose. Several grape varieties are specific to the country, particularly Vranac which makes a classic fine red. We looked round a couple of wineries, spent two nights at a vineyard and had the opportunity to taste a number of the different wines. In addition we looked round several ancient churchs with remarkable iconic paintings on their walls, a brightly painted Mosque, saw fields of archeological remainders, Byzantine, Roman, etc, went on a grand boat trip on Lake Ohrid, explored a canyon in another boat when we went down into caves and had a look round Skopje the capital. We saw folk dancers, a fine folk band and even heavy rock music at a wine festival. All in 7 days. All the time Daniel kept a gentle eye on us and let us know all about the dramatic and tragic history of the lands. He drove us safely and the hotels we stayed in were splendid. In brief we had a great time exploring a country which is little known to UK tourists. We left with a new understanding of the troubled history of the Balkans and an appreciation of the generosity of the people. On top of that we experiences new wines. Highly recommended

Juli was our tour guide and was fantastic! He knew the local history, architecture, culture, food, and current environment. We could not have found a more knowledgeable guide and competent driver on our own! And the Choose Balkans team that organizes and manages all the logistics are world class! I've traveled to more than 40 countries, and I'd match this tour group with any in the world I've used before. I'm grateful for a memorable experience and for making our time in Tirana worthwhile. It was a trip that we will not forget!
Excellent! Very well organised, extremely interesting and informative. The most famous ancient sites in Greece mixed with lots of cultural activities and a variety of geographical areas. Our tour director, Nikos Kontogiannis, was superb. Nikos has a great sense of humour, is extremely knowledgable and an excellent organiser. We were very impressed!
Nature Trips
- Excellent - 112 reviews for Macedonia tours
Overall, the "Spirit of the Balkans" tour with Nature Trips was fantastic and absolutely worth it. I should note that there were only 3 clients during our tour + our guide. We were flexible in our schedule and the pacing was just right with ample personal free time to do what we wanted to do. I imagine if it was a larger group, the tour would be more rigid in order to meet the schedule. We used a Mercedes Benz 7 passenger van for just the 3 of us. This was big enough for our luggage and we travelled comfortably. Ana was very professional about her work as tour guide cum driver. She was always prompt and was also in touch with our needs. She welcomed us with a package that included, among other things, a poncho that came in very handy during the 2 days that it rained. She also treated us like her longtime girlfriends. We chatted and talked about everything during the two weeks that we were together. She always gathered feedback from us about the hotel rooms, our local guides, the city tours, etc. for the continuous improvement of their future tours. about the places we visited, and anything Only daily breakfasts were included in the tour, so we were at liberty to try out our preferred food or cuisine. Breakfast at the hotels were adequate. We made stops during our driving days to very small cities to grab lunch/ snack instead of just stopping over at a gas station. Hotel quality vary city per city. They were always clean, but not as big or modern as others. Location wise, a majority of hotels we stayed in were within walking distance of the city centers. All hotels we stayed in had free WiFi, some more reliable than others. The only thing that deviated from our advertised itinerary were the the wine tasting and visiting the inside of the mosque in Sarajevo were stated in the itinerary, these did not happen. I was not particularly interested in these activities but it set us up for disappointmet and the nagging feeling of being short changed.
We loved the hikes; only wished they could have been longer. We wish we didn't have to spend so much time driving, but we understand that there is no other way to see so many things in so few days. We would have liked to spend more time in Sarajevo. Don't schedule Nis for a Monday since the best sites are closed on Monday. Overall, it was a great introduction to the history and natural beauty of the Balkans, but be prepared for a lot of driving.

Amazing!!! Best thing I’ve ever done
Tour leader Dora was awesome. Very adaptable. Provided options on transport to save time & inconvenience. Gave us information on each place visited but didn't overload us like school children. Provided suggestions on places to visit, restaurants, etc during free time. Hotels & guest houses all very good. Would have liked to stay 2 nights in Berat instead of 1. That is our 2nd Intrepid tour, will definitely keep recommending to friends. Linda Arlaud & Rodney Barnes

This tour was fantastic, it provided a great overview of Albania and we visited so many varied cities that you really got a whole picture and experience of the country. Travelling with this tour also allowed us to see so many places and scenery that we never would’ve been able to on our own which was awesome. We ended up with two local guides and they (as well as the driver) were absolutely fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable. Overall a fabulous way to experience Albania! Even if you know nothing about the place, would highly recommend!

Landlocked and encircled by its Balkan neighbours, North Macedonia was once part of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. Geographically the country is defined by its mountains, rivers and flat river valleys, all of which provide excellent settings for some real off-beat adventure. Home to three national parks, two distinct mountain ranges and one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe (Lake Ohrid), North Macedonia is for the most part an undiscovered gem that provides an authentic insight into a rich European culture that has sadly disappeared from many other parts of the region.
With a history that can trace its origins back to antiquity and the Kingdom of Paeonia, North Macedonia has a visible heritage that still recalls the influences of the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Serbs. These rich traditions can still be found in its architecture and its poetry as well as its food and music. North Macedonian cuisine successfully blends a diverse mix of Mediterranean (Greek) and Middle Eastern (Turkish) influences, along with a healthy sprinkling of Italian, German and Hungarian flavours. Meanwhile the country’s forests are abundant with flora and fauna including bears, wild boars, wolves and Eurasian lynx. Little wonder then that its sheep are guarded by the impressive Šarplaninec (Yugoslav Shepherd Dog).
North Macedonia may remain one of Europe’s poorest country’s economically, but in terms of its natural and cultural assets it punches well above its weight and, for getting off the beaten track, there are few destinations on the continent that can match it.

Learn more about North Macedonia (Macedonia)
Best time to visit north macedonia.
North Macedonia has a climate somewhere between a transitional continental and Mediterranean climate, which can vary greatly between seasons and regions. The country’s mountainous areas can be subjected to brutally cold winters (December to February), while the lower-lying areas can reach 40° C during summer (June to September). Between May and September is the best time to visit, unless you’re into skiing.
Culture and customs
Centuries-old traditions still take place, many of which incorporate the cultures of rulers gone by (notably the Ottoman Empire who ruled for 500 years). Locals will proudly put on their best folk costume to play traditional music, dance traditional dances (such as the ‘Oro’ circle dance) or take part in rituals passed down for generations. Ethnic North Macedonians – who make up the majority of the population (about 67%) and are largely Orthodox Christians – are frequently at odds with the country's notable Albanian population (about 23%), who are predominantly Muslim. Despite their differences, both groups tend to share conservative and patriarchal values. Visitors should be aware that women are expected to dress modestly and both men and women are expected to cover their knees and shoulders when visiting a mosque or church.
Eating and drinking
North Macedonian cuisine is a delicious mix of Balkan, Turkish and Mediterranean influences. Rustic dishes are made with plenty of locally grown produce (thanks to the country’s warm and pleasant climate) and fresh fish from the country’s rivers and lakes.
Must-try foods in North Macedonia
1. Tavche gravche
North Macedonia’s version of baked beans is also their national dish. White beans are first boiled and then baked with onions and herbs in a clay pot to create a fragrant and healthy meal.
2. Pastrmajlijada
An oval-shaped bread pie is topped with cubes of meat (usually pork or lamb) and baked to create this savoury snack sometimes referred to as a ‘North Macedonian pizza’.
3. Shopska salad
Chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and olives topped with plenty of salty white cheese. Similar to a Greek salad, shopska is a staple served at almost every restaurant.
Geography and environment
Located in southeast Europe , North Macedonia shares its border with Serbia , Bulgaria , Greece and Albania. Breathtaking mountains – perfect for hiking and climbing in the summer and skiing in the winter – give way to fertile flats. The Dinaric Alps slice through the west and the Vardar Valley occupies much of the central region. Despite being landlocked, North Macedonia contains many rivers and lakes, including the magnificently scenic Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe.
History and government
Early history.
Even by Balkan standards, North Macedonia’s history is characterised by complexity and controversy. Going back to the days of Alexander the Great (the country’s favourite son), North Macedonia has been pin-balled between external powers, from the Romans to the Byzantines, the Serbs to the Ottoman Turks, and the Bulgarians to the Greeks. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that the country officially attained its status as an independent nation – and even that remains a point of contention in certain circles.
From the sixth century AD until the fourteenth, the territory was wrestled to and fro between the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgars and Serbs before eventually falling to the Ottoman Empire in 1371. The country remained under Turkish rule until the empire’s decline in the eighteenth century, then was once again split up but this time between Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia. Various pushes for independence and ‘reunion’ with Bulgaria were then stymied by the two World Wars and the advent of communism.
Recent history
At the conclusion of World War II, the country was incorporated into the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia under the leadership of Tito – an era during which, by and large, the territory prospered. With the collapse of European communism, however, came new calls for Macedonian independence, and the state peacefully ceded from the republic in 1992.
Wary of ‘Macedonia’ being used as the country’s proposed name due to implied claims to Aegean Macedonia, Greece made its objections known and the compromise ‘The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ was eventually arrived at. Greek ire was re-aroused in 1994, culminating in its enforcement of an economic embargo that was eventually lifted upon Macedonia’s changing of its flag and agreeing to discussions about its name. The country evaded being embroiled in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s but experienced a potentially catastrophic civil conflict from 1997-2001 over tensions with its sizeable Albanian population. Hostilities were becalmed with a NATO ceasefire, but the Albanian-Macedonian relationship is still a touchy subject that’s best avoided.
In 2019 Macedonia agreed to change their name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.
Top 5 North Macedonian festivals
1. the galičnik wedding festival.
Back in the good old days, the villagers of Galičnik had only one day each year when North Macedonian couples could get married: the 12th of July. These days, starry-eyed lovers can take their vows on whichever day they please, but for one lucky couple, a traditional wedding ceremony is still a possibility. Held on the weekend closest to the 12th of July, the Galičnik Wedding Festival commemorates the custom with dances, elaborate dresses and a horse bridle being placed on the bride as a test of her obedience. Any North Macedonian couple that has already been married in the civil service can apply for the role of an official couple, with the winning entrant generally being the one with the prettiest bride.
2. Tikveski Grozdober (Grape Carnival)
Each September, Kavadarci, a small town in North Macedonia’s seriously scenic wine-growing region, plays host to the Tikveški Grozdober festival. A celebration of both the town’s liberation and the beginning of the grape harvest, the festival swells with food stalls and music concerts and culminates in an extravagantly costumed carnival procession through the town’s main streets. Oh, and much wine drinking.
3. Ilinden National Festival of Song and Dance
The oldest folk festival in the country, the Ilinden Days, is a celebration of all the folk cultural edifices that have come to represent North Macedonian identity over the years. Folk songs and dancing take centre stage here, all performed in traditional garb with traditional instruments. Held over four days, it provides a fascinating insight into traditional North Macedonian culture, as well as serves to preserve its history.
4. Pivo Fest Prilep Beer Fest
North Macedonia’s breweries aren’t as prolific as its wineries, but beer is still a pretty big player in national culture and deemed worthy of a festival. The first Pivo Fest Prilep was held in 2003 and, in contrast to many of the country’s other tradition-orientated festivals, the focus here is on live music, grilled meats, skimpy attire and ales abundant. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s now one of the most popular summer events in the country.
5. Carnival Procka
Kicking off three days before the Easter fast begins, the Procka Carnival, which is also held in Prilep, is a celebration of the unconditional forgiveness demonstrated by Jesus for his fellow humans. During this brief holiday, the young ask for forgiveness from their elders, who reply by saying ‘you are forgiven from me and from God.’ If this all sounds a bit sombre (not to mention presumptuous), there are also great feasting opportunities in preparation for the fasting ahead and things are livened up with parades of highly decorative ‘anything goes’ costumes.
The narrow cobbled streets of Skopje’s Old Bazaar (Carsija), the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, offer a more unique shopping experience. Step back in time to the days of Ottoman rule and browse craftsmen shops selling unique jewellery, handmade textiles and terracotta pots while locals sit outside cafes savouring sweet desserts and strong coffee.
Some stores in North Macedonia allow travellers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax-Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you are leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

Why did Macedonia change its name to North Macedonia?
After declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia chose their name, which strained relations with nearby Greece, which also has a region called Macedonia. In 2019, Macedonia agreed to change their name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

North Macedonia Tours
The beauty of North Macedonia cannot be understated to those considering visiting this tiny, often-neglected corner of the Balkans. The landscape is dominated by mountains, lakes and ancient towns brimming with eclectic Ottoman and European architecture.
Highlights of a tour of North Macedonia are many and various. Visiting the Church of St John at Kaneo, an ancient Orthodox church built on a cliff overlooking the still waters of Lake Ohrid, is a photographer’s dream. The unique landscape of the Matka Canyon, home to verdant rock faces and medieval monasteries, is one of the most popular outdoor attractions. While the capital city of Skopje, where old and new are linked by a 15 th -century stone bridge, offers endless avenues for exploration.
One of North Macedonia’s hidden delights is the richness of its archaeological digs. The atmospheric town of Ohrid is filled with beautiful churches, and remains one of the oldest human settlements on earth. Detailed archaeological excavations to discover the secrets of the old town are underway. In central North Macedonia the Stobi site is a holy grail for those interested in ancient history, with a myriad of treasures longing to be explored.

How do you get to Macedonia?
Macedonia has two main airports for flying in which are Skopje Airport Alexander the Great and Ohrid Airport Apostol Pavle. With the recent modernization of Macedonian Airports the access to European destinations is as easy as ever. There are around 150 flights in a week from different European cities to Skopje. There are direct flights from three Swedish cities, Malmo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Out of 275 European airports, Skopje's Alexander the Great Airport won the prize for the 2012 best in Europe, in the category of two million passenger services per year.
Yuri Kivshar
Skopje is a very interesting place to visit and many people do not know about the country and the capital—the city is booming with new construction works and many interesting monuments which are hard to understand or learn without an experience guide, so the guide service is the must.
Megan Marfione
Lence is very professional, speaks fluent English, and tells great jokes. As a local national, Lence is very informative and answered any questions we had. She took her job as guide seriously and was very concerned about our comfort and safety throughout the trip.

I hired her way before arriving in Skopie mostly to drive me to Voden but after I met her in Skopje I knew she was the right person so I hired her for two more days. She has tones of experience in tourism, very familiar with Macedonia and its neighbours countries and willing to compromise and accommodate her clients no matter.
Linda Stamko

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect international travel. International tourist arrivals were down 83 per cent in the first quarter of 2021. Widespread travel restrictions remained in place. However, the pace of the vaccination rollout as well as policies to restart tourism safely, have boosted hopes for a rebound. Many countries removed quarantine requirement for vaccinated travellers. European Council approved the EU Digital Green Certificate to facilitate travel. We expect a rebound in international travel and we are ready to welcome our guests again soon. Read More

Rose Festival Tour June 2024
Our cultural tours in Bulgaria are designed for discerning travellers with particular interest in culture and traditions. Bulgaria is a small country, rich on historical facts and events, accumulated during the last 7 000 years. Here is one of the curiosities, much to everybody's surprise. The oldest gold treasure of the world was found neither in Mesopotamia nor in Egypt, the native lands of the earliest known civilizations. It was found in North-East Bulgaria, near the city of Varna . It dates as far back as more than 6 000 years .
Most important, Brill Travel's tours provide authentic experience of the places you visit. We stop in hand-picked hotels and restaurants. Along with the “must see” tourist sites, we offer side-trips to pop-up markets and local theme festivals where locals frequent. Should you wish to attend a Bulgarian folklore dance class, we know where to go, too.For example - a home-hosted lunch or a wine-tasting session, Orthodox acapella concert in a mediaeval church or an Easter egg-painting demonstration . Truly, all these make your travel experience unique and memorable.

Guided sightseeing is the greatest and the most profitable part of the tours. All tours are guided by a knowledgeable local guide, native of the country visited, who will answer any of your questions in details. Our private guides and drivers, who accompany guests throughout, create an intimate and friendly atmosphere we all seem to crave.
Itineraries are planned attentively and precisely. They cover famous places all over Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia or Northern Greece. Besides the most famed sightseeing, you can choose a tailor-made tour and be able to take pleasure in nature silence and relax peacefully, away from crowded cities and stressful daily life.

We also encourage travellers to combine travel to Bulgaria with visiting other neighbouring countries - Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece or Turkey, or any other European country.
We share the idea of slow-paced art of travel. There is no need to be on the go while travelling, isn’t there? We all have enough stress in our everyday lives.
