The legendary new wave and 2 tone group is in town for a massive gig this week

Ed Cunningham

Time to dust off yer pork pie hat and iron those straight-cut trousers: 2 tone and new wave legends Madness are in town for a massive gig this week. Suggs and co.’s ‘C’est La Vie’ tour stops by the O2 Arena in Greenwich, with support from the Lightning Seeds.

Expect to hear plenty of Madness’ greatest hits like ‘House of Fun’ and ‘Our House’, alongside cuts from new album ‘Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie’, which was released last month. Here’s everything you need to know about the show, from timings to ticket availability.

When is Madness at London’s O2 Arena?

The band is playing this very Friday, on December 15 2023.

What time do doors open?

Doors open at 6:30pm.

What time will the band come on stage?

The band hasn’t yet confirmed when they’ll take to the stage. However, from previous tour dates, we’d expect them to come on between 8:45pm and 9:15pm.

Who is supporting Madness?

Support comes from pop group The Lightning Seeds, best known for hits like ‘Pure’, ‘The Life of Riley’ and, of course, legendary footie song ‘Three Lions’.

Any news on the setlist?

This is what the band played at a gig earlier on the tour in Bournemouth, according to Setlist.fm .

Madness, O2 Arena, review: The great mischief-makers are still having fun

There was plenty of hometown gig good cheer as madness took over the o2.

madness tour 02

Who’d have thought that as we reached 2024, Madness would be back at the top of the charts? Theatre Of The Absurd Presents C’est La Vie gave Britain’s archetypical singles band their first ever number one album at the end of November. At the O2 Arena on Friday, suited and booted frontman Suggs, Madness’ ever-reliable mischievous ringleader, took the news with trademark tongue-in-cheek bravado. “Taylor Swift, you can do one! And Drake! You can get out the cab right now, too.” It’s not bad going, he concluded, given “the fact we’re still alive is sort of a miracle”.

The Nutty Boys’ now traditional December jaunt long ago became a not-to-be-missed festive knees-up and the rowdy crowd – dressed in a mix of Santa hats and staple Madness uniform fedoras and fezzes – came expectantly for hits and hometown gig good cheer. There was plenty of the latter: stories of the old days; shout-outs to family (including keyboardist Mike Barson’s 97-year-old mum); and, in the encore, a warm cover of The Specials’ “Friday Night, Saturday Morning” in tribute to “an old pal of ours”, Terry Hall.

An excellent, hit-packed support slot from the Lightning Seeds and a well-judged pre-gig DJ set left Madness with an open goal, one they took advantage of after a slight detour through a first half that was heavy going on new songs of a darker hue.

madness tour 02

Theatre Of The Absurd Presents C’est La Vie was not exactly Madness at their most jubilant: a three-act song suite narrated by actor Martin Freeman, it took the key Madness components of ska and music hall into slower, opaquer territory, observing the bizarre nature of existence in the face of impending apocalypse: “Run for Your Life” took a very on-the-nose swipe at the elite for their part in the mess we find ourselves in.

Not exactly “House of Fun”, then, but Madness always slipped contentious social commentary into their on-the-surface joviality. As Suggs stated, 1980’s “Embarrassment” commented on the “consternation” caused by saxophonist Lee Thompson’s teenage sister Tracy having a mixed-race baby. As it happened, the daughter in question, Hayley, was in the crowd on her 43rd birthday.

Madness replicated the album’s structure by splitting the show into three acts. After an introduction video from Dame Helen Mirren, the curtains came down to reveal a stage set like an old Victorian auditorium, a fitting stage for brooding opener “Theatre of the Absurd”, an excellent Samuel Beckett-esque musing on the “black comedy” of both life and performance.

Hozier, Wembley Arena, review: Part concert, part manifesto – music and message in perfect harmony

Hozier at Wembley Arena was part concert, part manifesto - music and message in perfect harmony

Eight other new tracks of varying quality followed, interspersed with hits – the young lovers’ tiff of “My Girl”, the calypso-tinged “Wings of a Dove”, with every “whoa whoa” bellowed back – and Suggs’ reliable presence. “I’ve come to the conclusion so many of our songs are about petty criminality,” he said before new song “Baby Burglar”, a ghostly, catchy vignette about youthful thievery that ended with a sax flourish of the Batman theme.

Eventually, “One Step Beyond” had everyone on their feet, the starting gun on a barrage of pure gold (“House of Fun”, “Baggy Trousers”, “Our House”, singalong of the night “It Must Be Love”) that were dispatched by the eight-piece ensemble with such vim and vigour it was like no time had passed. Perhaps new song “In My Street” put it best: “Must be 40-odd years now/ But don’t time fly/ When you’re having fun”.

Recent tour reviews

Brilliant show as always from Madness although they sang a few obscure tunes which we didn't really know from their back catalogue (although they were celebrating 40 years so I guess that was understandable). The Roundhouse is our favourite venue, it's well run, great sound, good views from wherever you stand or sit, plenty of bars & toilets.

Madness where fantastic. Great being in a smaller venue. Only downside was no air conditioning and it was extremely hot inside . No support act to speak of just a guy playing tunes at his decks which was ok for a bit but crowd got a bit restless . Madness brilliant

nikki-cattanach’s profile image

Brilliant atmosphere, fabulous sound,& an unbelievably great show yet again, only disappointment was (some of,not all) the security guards at the venue, their level of professionalism left a lot to be desired, but The Fratellis and Madness were (and still are) just as good as they’ve always been! #TheSoundOfMadness

“I remember the first time we were in the  USA, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, The Mud Club, ABC City,” Madness frontman Suggs recalls in a press release. “I remember Jelly Bean Benetiz, Madonna, Beastie Boys, Run DC Link Ray. America was everything we hoped it would be, we were small fish and we still are and we can’t wait to be swimming in those waters again!”

Madness previously had planned to tour the US in 2020, but those dates were repeatedly postponed due to the pandemic.

Zurich Classic Betting Preview: Odds, Prediction, Long Shot Bet, Team to Fade and Outright Winner Pick

  • Author: Brian Giuffra

In this story:

The only PGA Tour team event of the season (think laidback Ryder Cup vibes) is here and it’s chock-full of powerhouse tandems to consider betting on.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffle and Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala headline the field this week, but we're not betting on them, choosing instead to focus on a team of brothers.

Before betting, it’s important to remember this is a unique format. There are two days of fourball, known as best-ball, played in Rounds 1 and 3 and two rounds of foursomes, known as alternate shots, in Rounds 2 and 4.

Last year’s winning team of Davis Riley and Nick Hardy shot 30 under for the week, so we must pick duos who can go low in each format.

Who are they? Let’s break it down starting with the Top 10 teams in odds, which come from DraftKings Sportsbook, followed by our longshot pick, the team to fade and outright winner.

Zurich Classic Odds

Patrick Cantlay / Xander Schauffele +400

Rory McIlroy / Shane Lowry +700

Will Zalatoris / Sahith Theegala +800

Collin Morikawa / Kurt Kitayama +1200

Rasmus Højgaard / Nicolai Højgaard +2200

Tom Hoge / Maverick McNealy +2500

Matt Fitzpatrick / Alex Fitzpatrick +2500

Taylor Pendrith / Corey Conners +2800

Nick Taylor / Adam Hadwin +3000

Sepp Straka / Brice Garnett +4000

Keith Mitchell / Joel Dahmen +4000

Doug Ghim / Chan Kim +4000

Billy Horschel / Tyson Alexander +4000

Zurich Classic Long Shot Pick: Billy Horschel / Tyson Alexander +4000

There’s no shortage of star power atop the leaderboard, but a team capable of competing this week that’s flying under the radar is Billy Horschel and Tyson Alexander at +4000 odds.

Horschel just won the Puntacana Championship with a 23-under total highlighted by a 63 on Sunday. He’s always been a streaky player and I’m counting on his hot streak continuing at an event he’s had success at before.

Horschel won this event when it was played as an individual tournament and won it another time as a team. He’s placed second twice and tied for fourth once here. Last year, he placed 11th with Sam Burns.

Alexander is not as well known and doesn’t have as strong of a history at the Zurich, but he’s off to a good start this season (has made three straight cuts) and had his best start of the season three weeks ago at the Texas Open. He's also 49th on tour in shots-gained: putting, an important stat this week, especially in alternate shot.

Winning back-to-back events is tough, but Horschel’s hot and he wouldn’t have picked Alexander as his teammate in an event he has a history of success at if he didn’t think they could win.

Zurich Classic Team to Fade: Rasmus Højgaard / Nicolai Højgaard +2200

Nicolai Højgaard was leading the Masters outright Saturday afternoon before a disastrous back nine 40 ended his chances of winning. He followed that up with a 4-over 76 on Sunday and just missed the cut at the Puntacana Championship.

Overall, he’s missed three cuts in his last five events and was T-75 in another with a +5 total score. His run at Augusta seems more an apparition when taking a macro view of his recent form.

Nicolai is playing with his twin brother, Rasmus, who withdrew from the Indian Open after an opening-round 79. Rasmus does have three Top 10s on the DP World Tour this season, but the most recent one came in February.

Recent results suggest both brother’s forms are regressing heading into this one. While being together could lighten the mood and improve their play, the +2200 odds are not good enough to warrant a bet.

Zurich Classic Pick to Win: Matt Fitzpatrick / Alex Fitzpatrick +2500

After fading one brother duo, why not back another, huh?

Matt Fitzpatrick is ranked ninth in total driving on the PGA Tour, 26th in total putting, 15th in birdie average per round and 11th in birdie percentage on Par 5s. He finished fifth at the Players and 10th at the Texas Open, was in contention at the Masters early and just shot four rounds under par at the RBC Heritage.

Alex finished T23 at the Corales last week with four rounds under par including a Sunday 67. He missed the cut at the Indian Open at the end of March, but has been steady on the DP World Tour this season, with six Top 20s in nine events. Like his brother, Alex is a solid driver and strong putter.

Last year, the Fitzpatricks finished T-19 at the Zurich, with two rounds of 62 during fourball and rounds of 71 and 74 in alternate shot. If they can make up some strokes in the latter format, they’ll be in contention this week, because both make a ton of birdies off their own ball.

Odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

Many shows impose ticket limits to allow as many people as possible to have equal access to seats. This is done as a deterrent to third party vendors, i.e. scalpers, who may purchase large blocks of seats and then resell them online at an inflated cost. The term “household” refers to any shared information on one or more accounts. This includes, but may not be limited to matching names, mailing and billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers. Any households that purchase more than the allowed number of tickets may have their order(s) refunded without notice.
