Conquer Your Local Sand Dunes With This V-8-Powered Safari Mercedes
It's probably not as comfortable as a new C-Class, but it's a whole lot more fun.
Welcome to You Must Buy , our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
This old Mercedes has been treated to a mild lift, and had its fenders cut to fit a set of big meaty tires wrapped around American Racing wheels. There are a bunch of cool decals on the car as well, including a "Peking to Paris" shield on the front bumper and a Nurburgring outline on the rear fender. Fortunately, most of the original chrome trim—including the massive grille—remains in place.
The seller doesn't go into much detail regarding the V-8 under the hood, saying only that it's a Chevy small block. It sends power to the rear wheels via an unspecified automatic transmission. Look closely, and you'll see side-exit exhaust pipes poking out underneath either rear door.
This V-8 swapped Mercedes is currently up for bidding on eBay in Mascotte, Florida with an opening price of $7888 and no reserve. The car's not perfect—there are some loose wires in the cabin, and much of the weather stripping is dried out. But for that kind of money, you're likely getting one hell of a driving experience.

Roundup: Enthusiast-built safari cars that will inspire you to hit the dirt roads
Written by Daniel Lackey
The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.
Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.
Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.
We scanned the interwebs and Instagram to find some of our favorite builds which you can browse and follow below:
Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa
The car: Dropped Alfa | The photographer: Jeff Stockwell
Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.
The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build.
I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix
The car and photo: Jakub Marek (I Am Detailing)
Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.
After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.
Alfa Romeo GTV6: Aether Alpine Alfa
The car: Aether's Alpine Alfa GTV6 | The photographer: Shayan Bokaie
Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.
The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

Best of the Current Mercedes-Benz Model Lineup
2021 Edition
For all intents and purposes, our selections for this list come exclusively from Mercedes-Benz’ AMG roster – and that’s not a bad thing. There are big perks which come along with the AMG badge, far exceeding the mere addition of a fancy body kit and superficial engravings.
The “one man, one engine” philosophy is donned on every AMG car at the facility in Affalterbach, Germany, where one of only fifty AMG engine craftsmen will have the privilege of stamping their signature on the engine they personally built for the car. With respect to production, Mercedes-Benz has all their bases covered, quite literally, with ensuring that anyone can have a taste of the AMG experience; by having it available in just about every body type imaginable.
With an expansive lineup of cars which come in coupe, convertible, sedan, wagon, SUV and even “4-door coupe” configurations, there is an AMG for any occasion – grocery store runs, road trips to the mountains, your kids’ soccer practice, the race track, or even fighting a zombie apocalypse. Mercedes-Benz doesn’t think that experiencing the best performance that the company has on tap should be limited to cramped 2-seaters with barely any usable cargo space, or enjoyed only on a strict diet of high performance driving events – and they’ve got the lineup to prove it.
Here are the best brand new Mercedes-Benz automobiles you can buy today.
Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Sedan / Wagon
Base MSRP: $111,750 USD
For 2021, Mercedes refreshed the E63 S’s appearance and has also given the sedan some new features. It’s the recipient of a new grille design with updated headlights and taillights, as well as new 20-inch wheels with a more aerodynamic silhouette. Inside, the E63 S has a redesigned steering wheel with larger paddle shifters as well as an updated infotainment system. Most importantly though, the engine and powertrain are still best in class; it’s a monster when you want it to be, yet it can still poodle around town in luxury when things need to be a little more on the tame side.
The wagon is probably my favorite body-style of any Mercedes-AMG car in the entire roster. It shares the same 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 as the E63 S sedan – producing 603 hp @ 5,750 rpm – so its slick, utilitarian estate design doesn’t come with any meaningful performance penalties whatsoever. In fact, the E63 S wagon outperforms any of its competitors on the road. Is it a spacious supercar or a fast family car? Only one way to find out: Open it up.
Mercedes-AMG GT R
Base MSRP: $162,900 USD, $199,650 USD (GT R Pro)
The 577 hp AMG GT R is Mercedes-Benz’ flagship supercar, which is the amalgamation of half a century of motorsports success, into a single Nürburgring lap. Lightened, sharpened and strengthened, its racing DNA is evident in every fiber of its body, chassis and soul. For those looking for that extra bit of the apex-clipping good stuff, the limited edition ‘GT R Pro’ is an even more track-focused variant of the GT R.
The new GT R Pro is more than just a fancy (yet functional) body kit and is also the beneficiary of upgrades that aren’t as easily seen; such as redesigned mechanically adjustable coil overs, carbon ceramic brakes, a carbon fiber torsion bar, and dynamic engine and transmission mounts. The Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro looks to be calling out the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 720S, and has definitely brought the right arsenal to this battle of giants.
Mercedes-AMG G 63 “G-Wagon”
Base MSRP: $167,000 USD
There’s just no avoiding the Mercedes-AMG G 63, when there’s a conversation about iconic SUVs and which one you would buy if money was no object. The G 63 would probably be the pick of the lot in that context; its popularity and familiarity as the ultimate luxury off-roader is often proliferated in today’s pop culture and social media platforms.
Thanks to its insane acceleration, industry leading off-road capabilities and timeless styling cues which harken back to the days of peak safari-ism, the Mercedes-Benz G63 has become the quintessential expression of wealth and utilitarianism in one package, making it the fan-favorite in this segment.
Mercedes-AMG C 63 / C 63 S
Base MSRP: $68,600 USD, $76,200 USD (C 63 S)
The C 63-series cars are the first step into “true” AMG territory, being the lowest point of entry in order to get one of those highly coveted handcrafted AMG engines. The C 63 is the beneficiary of a 4.0L biturbo V8 mated to paddle-shifted multiclutch 9-speed, outputting 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. Standard Adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL and a limited-slip differential make it quick on its feet. An exquisitely detailed cabin completes that “total package” feeling, which the C 63 provides in spades.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S is the top model in this range, equipped with the same handcrafted biturbo V8 as the C 63, but now unleashing 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque in this guise. Aggressive style envelops advanced new technologies, and from the cabin, drivers are immersed in innovation and superb build quality. Both the C 63 and C 63 S are available in coupe, sedan and convertible configurations, meaning that buyers don’t need to fuss over how much (or how little) they can fit in their new AMG car.
Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S
Base MSRP: $113,950 USD
Aside from the G-Wagon, the AMG GLE 63 S is the most powerful and impressive SUV in the lineup. It’s a little more sleek and refined than the former, and will certainly blend in a lot more with daily traffic, making it (arguably) the better choice for city dwellers or more unassuming owners. The AMG GLE 63 S has been improved over last year’s model with the addition of Mercedes-Benz’ EQ Boost hybrid technology, which has increased peak power to 603 hp compared to 577 hp in the 2020 models.
The drivetrain continues to be hooked up to the impressive AMG Performance 4MATIC+, while the chassis benefits from AMG Active Ride Control. In tandem, these advanced systems help deliver sports-car-like agility and precision via the AMG GLE 63 S. Its lavish, Nappa leather-appointed cabin lets you enjoy wielding its exotic-levels of performance while being cradled in the arms of top-tier luxury. Available in SUV and “Coupe” body styles.

Mercedes-Benz
The German luxury-car legend is known for high-dollar, high-tech premium sedans, SUVs, coupes, wagons, and convertibles. At one end of spectrum is the CLA-class, which is a great subcompact sedan. Joining the CLA-class as one of our favorite compact sedans is the C-class. The E-class is terrific, with its effortless performance and peerless luxury for the price. The GLS is a great full-size SUV and a great value, but the flagship S-class sedan delivers the sybaritic luxury for which the brand is best known.

The 12 Best Square Cars in 2023
Square cars have practical advantages and hold aesthetic appeal for some drivers. These 12 models are some of the best square vehicles you can buy.
Stellantis |
Knowing All the Angles
Most modern cars have an exterior design that's curvy and organic. But some vehicles march to the beat of a different drummer, showcasing sheet metal that's proud to be square.
Why would someone have a preference for a square car? Their boxy styling may give square vehicles practical advantages. For example, a vehicle with that kind of upright stance often has an airy cabin with significant headroom and good sightlines; that design may also be suitable for accommodating taller cargo. And some drivers choose square cars simply because they like these vehicles' unconventional, vaguely retro look.
We can assist if you're seeking the best square cars. The following slideshow presents our 12 top picks, listed in ascending order based on their U.S. News overall scores.
Remember that we frequently update scores in our reviews as new data comes in. For that reason, the scores in this slideshow may differ from those shown elsewhere on our site.

2023 Toyota 4Runner
$40,155 | u.s. news overall score: 7.0/10.
The Toyota 4Runner is a square midsize SUV with lots to offer if you enjoy off-roading. All models with available four-wheel drive have multiple skid plates and a two-speed transfer case. And this SUV provides up to 9.6 inches of ground clearance for gliding over rocks and fallen tree branches.
Unfortunately, that off-road prowess comes with some compromises. The ride quality is unsettled on harsh pavement, and fuel economy is poor.
Five seats come standard, and an optional third row allows the 4Runner to accommodate seven people. All models have a 270-horsepower V6 under the hood.

A Mercedes 450 SLC Rally Car Is About To Become Someone’s Million-Dollar Pride And Joy
As one of the 4 cars that dominated WRC's 1979 Bandama Rally Cote D’Ivoire race, this Merc is expected to be sold for up to $1.1 million
by Sebastien Bell
- The Mercedes 450 SLC 5.0 was the first rally car to win a WRC event with a V8 engine or an automatic transmission.
- This one, number 4, came in second at the rally car’s inaugural race, assisting Bjorn Waldegard win the 1979 WRC title.
- Offered for sale at RM Sotheby’s Monaco auction, it’s expected to sell for as much as $1.1 million.
Although we consider Group B the golden age of rallying, the era that preceded it was pretty good, too. This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 is a testament to that time’s spirit of experimentation.
As one of the four cars fielded by the automaker for the 1979 Bandama Rally Cote d’Ivoire, this particular 450 SLC, number 4, finished the race in second place, with Bjorn Waldegard and Hans Thorszelius in the cockpit. Although it is not the car that earned the important first victory, it did end up winning Waldegard that year’s world rally championship driver’s title by a single point.
Read: Six-Wheel Tyrrell P34, The Zaniest F1 Car Ever, Could Sell For As Much As $700k
The winning car, driven by Hannu Mikkola, became the first rally car to ever win a WRC race with a V8 under the hood, or an automatic transmission handling the gears.
The V8 under the hood was new then, made of aluminum for a significantly lighter weight. A specially developed automatic transmission, in addition to an alloy hood and trunk, as well as thinner steel doors, turned the 450 SLC into a serious competitor.
As one of just 19 cars built for international rallying and one of just seven officially badged as a 450 SLC 5.0, this particular example is an exceedingly special rally car. After its momentous first season of racing, it was sent straight back into the thick of it.
In 1980, it went to the Marlboro Safari Rally in Kenya , finishing third, and later that year was used as a training car in Argentina. By 1982, it was sold to Serge Beankens (aka Serge Power), who decided to remove the aluminum engine, replace it with a more reliable steel version, and take it to endurance racing.
The car ran the 1982 24 Hours of Spa driven by Claude Bourgoingnie, Alain Lierneux, and someone whose name you might recognize from another high-performance product, John Cooper , finishing eighth.
By 1984, Serge Beankens decided to put the aluminum engine back in and sell it to Dr. Peter Lorenz, who chose to restore it back to 1979 spec. Today, it sports the same livery it wore at the 1979 Bandama Rally Cote d’Ivoire.
A unique piece of Mercedes history, the car is now being auctioned off and will be sold with a wide array of documentation. Set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s Monaco Auction, which runs from May 10 to 11, this 1979 Mercedes 450 SLC 5.0 “Rallyewagen” is expected to go for between $850,000 and $1.1 million.

What does Mercedes-Benz' Most Affordable Car has to offer? The details you need to know if you live in the United States
W e first caught a glimpse of the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé back in 2023, and it again turned heads at the 2024 CES in Las Vegas. With its cutting-edge technology, the CLA Class Concept hints at the German automaker's upcoming electric production plans.
In line with this vision, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the CLA Coupé will be part of their entry-level EV lineup in the next generation. A lot of difference with the opulent Maybach S-Class we talked about, specially in price. But before we dive into the electric future, let's take a closer look at the current CLA Coupé and its appeal to US buyers.
Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé: A Stylish Statement
If I had to describe the CLA in a nutshell, I'd call it a four-door coupé with personality. Among Mercedes' compact offerings, the CLA's profile is a favorite of mine, largely due to its flowing lines that start from the horizontal cut of the side skirts, rise over the pillars, and shape the doors, emphasizing the rear line with a subtle finish just ahead of the rear wheels. The LED headlights have been redesigned, the base wheels are 18 inches with a multi-spoke design as standard, and I also love its panoramic sunroof.
Tech-Savvy Interior
With seating for five, the interior stands out for its technology designed for both the driver and the rest of the passengers. This is thanks to the dual display setup, consisting of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system , which together form a unique and stretched interface that breaks away from the norm when it comes to digital equipment.
The displays work in conjunction with the intuitive MBUX system , which controls various vehicle functions through voice commands. However, it's important to note that this feature is optional.
Performance and Powertrain
The 2024 model year CLA Coupé features a mild-hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt starter generator that adds an extra 13 horsepower. Total output is 221 hp, maximum torque is 258 lb-ft, and power is sent to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is also available) through an eight-speed automatic transmission. How quick is it? It can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Its fuel economy falls within average figures and is acceptable, with 26 mpg in the city.
The Most Affordable Mercedes in the US
If you're looking for a brand-new Mercedes in the US, the CLA Coupé is the most affordable optio n. Its starting price is $43,200 for the front-wheel-drive model, while the all-wheel-drive 4MATIC variant starts at $45,200. After the CLA, the next most accessible model in North America is the C-Class sedan, starting at $47,000.
With its sleek design, advanced technology, and attractive price, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé is a compelling choice for US drivers seeking a stylish and sophisticated entry into the Mercedes-Benz brand. But don't wait too long – the electric revolution is on the horizon.

Mercedes-Benz AMG planning an electric SUV with 1,000 bhp, would launch in 2026
- Mercedes-Benz AMG is planning an all-electric performance SUV meant to churn out more than 1,000 bhp peak power.
Mercedes-Benz may have cancelled its half sedan and half SUV model, but it is working on an AMG-badged electric SUV, reported British automotive publication Autocar UK. The pure electric SUV would come with a 1,000 bhp power output and is expected to launch in 2026. The upcoming all-electric performance-focused SUV will reportedly be based on the AMG.EA architecture of the German luxury car brand, which will be meant for performance-oriented EVs only.
The report further stated that the upcoming electric SUV will not be related to any existing Mercedes-Benz product. The new performance electric SUV would be roughly as big as the Vision AMG, which means it could come with an overall length of about 200 inches, while it will come with a generous wheelbase of around 118 inches. Upon launch, the Mercedes-Benz AMG EV would compete with rivals like Lotus Eletre, BMW XM plug-in hybrid and Porsche's upcoming three-row electric luxobarge.

The report also said that the AMG flagship electric SUV could break cover in a concept form in the coming months. However, there is no information about the electric powertrain. It is not clear how many motors will be there but expect it to get at least two powering each axle. Also, expect the motors to channel power to all four wheels considering the EV will receive an all-wheel drive (AWD) setup. Speaking of power output, the EV would churn out more than 1,000 bhp peak power and will promise a whole new level of variable traction possibilities.
The unnamed electric SUV could come as an SUV equivalent of the Vision AMG, a zero-emission successor to the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe . The report stated that Mercedes-Benz is already making changes at its German manufacturing plant in Sindelfingen to accommodate the production of the performance-focused all-electric SUV. The report also noted that it would be a key model in AMG's future strategy.
