Britannia Mine Museum

The Britannia Mine Museum is located 55 kilometres North of Downtown Vancouver near the town of Squamish . The Britannia Mine Museum has become one of the most popular things to do in the Vancouver area, and it’s one of the best day trips from Vancouver going.

Furthermore, the mine is halfway between Vancouver and Whistler in the stunning Sea to Sky Corridor. So a visit to the Britannia Mine Museum is also a popular way to break up the drive.

History of the Britannia Mine Museum

From 1904 to 1974, the museum functioned as one of the most important mines in the Commonwealth. Over that period, an incredible 60,000 people called the site home and over 50,000,000 tons of ore were extracted!

This number included over 15 tons of gold.

The mine helped Canada through two World Wars during its 70-year lifespan. Unfortunately, it also experienced its fair share of tragedy. An estimated 98 workers perished in its massive 210-kilometre network of underground tunnels due to slides, fires, floods and accidents.

Britannia Mining Museum Today

A year after closing in 1975, the BC Museum of Mining opened its doors on the site. After two significant upgrades, the facility was renamed the Britannia Mining Museum in 2010, in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Today, the museum’s grounds contain 23 historic industrial, administrative and domestic buildings. The most notable of these is the massive Mill No.3 facility, which can be seen from the highway.

Inside, you’ll encounter over 7000 artifacts, 9500 archive photos and 3000 archival documents spread out across a variety of interactive exhibits . You can learn about the site’s history and the importance of mining in the modern era.

But most importantly, you can have some fun!

Enjoy a signature Canadian experience by burning through the tunnels in an underground train . Take a photo in front of an 800,000 lb giant haul truck . Or experience the thrilling new BOOM! sound and special effects experience .

Britannia Mine Museum Location

The museum is located about 45 minutes North of Vancouver along the famed Sea to Sky Highway near the town of Squamish. On a clear Vancouver summer day, the picturesque drive is almost worth the price of admission alone.

You’ll experience breathtaking views of Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains at almost every turn. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the road!

The mine marks the halfway point in the journey from Vancouver to Whistler , so it’s a perfect way to break up the drive. Alternatively, if you’re doing a day trip, I also highly recommend hitting up the nearby Sea to Sky Gondola .

If you have a vehicle, then the easiest way to get to the Britannia Mine is to drive. Just be cognizant of the fact that traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge into North Vancouver can be miserable. So time your departure outside of peak hours if possible.

Once you’ve passed the village of Porteau Cove, you’ll be confronted with what will likely be the biggest truck you’ve ever seen! This behemoth will cue your arrival.

Then follow the signs and exit the highway on your right. There is plenty of free parking on-site.

For detailed directions from your luxury Vancouver hotel , head over to Google Maps .

The Squamish Connector

If you don’t have wheels, The Squamish Connector offers daily shuttle buses between Vancouver and Squamish for $32. It will stop at the mine by request.

The Giant Haul Truck

The enormous Giant Haul Truck is the first thing that’ll catch your eye from the highway. Measuring over 20 feet tall and weighing in at over 800,000 lbs , this Wabco Ultra-class monster was specifically engineered to carry massive amounts of ore material in a mining environment.

However, it now serves as the museum’s most popular photo-op for visitors. So seize the opportunity and grab your family for that crucial snap for Instagram before you head inside.

The Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre, Britannia Mine Museum

Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre

Once you walk through the doors, your first stop will be the mine’s brand-new visitor centre. The room’s notable contrast with the historical buildings on site seeks to connect the mine’s past with the present.

Consequently, you’ll find a variety of films , touchscreen displays and interactive exhibits that seek to convey the importance of mining to our everyday lives in the information age.

Quick hint: your iPhone would still be but a distant dream.

The Britannia Story

The Britannia Story Exhibit outlines everyday life in the mine and the adjoining town of Britannia Beach. Here, you’ll find the bulk of the museum’s archival photos and documents .

As you walk inside the walls of a beautifully restored heritage building, you’ll learn about the lighter side of the Britannia Story. View pictures from the mine’s swimming pools and tennis courts and view the contestants from the annual Copper Queen Pageant.

Children are free to sit on the Queen’s throne for another photo-op and crawl into a child-friendly tunnel.

Historical Buildings and Artifacts

Once you’ve learned a little bit about the museum’s history, I recommend you take some time to wander around the site’s 10-acre grounds. Seventeen buildings remain from the mine’s heyday, and you can explore them all.

The most important structure is Mill No.3 , also known as the Concentrator . This iconic 20-storey building dominates the site on the Northwest side of Mt. Sheer. It has also appeared in Hollywood productions such as the X-files, MacGyver and Scooby-Doo 2.

The building contains an innovative inclined gravity mill that was constructed in 1923 after a fire damaged the previous units. As you explore the buildings, you’ll come across a variety of artifacts that document the lives of those who worked there for over 70 years.

A girl inspects some minerals at the Mineral Gallery, Britannia Mine Museum

The Mineral Gallery

In addition to Copper, the mine produced a whole host of minerals such as gold, silver, zinc, lead and cadmium. In the Mineral Gallery, you can get an up-close look at these and many other minerals of all shapes and sizes.

While gold is always popular, be sure to have a look at the stunning fluorescent minerals — including azurite and selenite. They aren’t just for show, though, so pay close attention to learn about the unique uses for each product.

A group of visitors ride an underground train through a mine shaft

The Underground: A Canadian Signature Experience

If you’d like to truly experience what it’s like to work in a copper mine, then here is your chance. This museum highlight allows visitors to board a small mine train in order to rumble through an old haulage tunnel 650 metres below the surface .

An underground tour will give you a quick taste of what it’s truly like to work far below ground where, as the saying goes, the sun don’t shine.

After a quick climb up around 50 steps, you’ll receive a hard hat and a quick safety briefing. You’re then free to board the small haulage train before heading deep into the tunnels. While it’s quite dark for much of the trip, you do eventually stop in a well-lit area where you’re free to explore the mine.

You may want to bring a light hoodie or sweater, as it can get quite cold once underground – even in the heart of summer.

BOOM! A Live-Action Experience

Britannia’s newest exhibit is a thrilling light, sound and special effects experience inside historic Mill No.3 . This national historic site is magically reawakened to its former glory via this new fully-interactive “Disney-like attraction.”

Video screens and a few dozen speakers combine to demonstrate the seat-rumbling roar of the giant machines that powered the most productive copper mine in the British empire.

Launched in the Summer of 2019, this informative and exciting adventure promises to be a hit with visitors of all ages.

The Gold Panning Pavilion

Surely, everyone has fantasized about striking it rich in a gold mine. Well, now you’ve got your chance!

Before you hit the road, you can embrace your inner prospector by panning for gold in the Gold Panning Pavilion.

And the best part is, whatever you find, you get to keep!

The mine’s panning troughs are set at a variety of heights, meaning visitors of all ages are free in their attempt to get gilded. Unfortunately, I came up empty. But you never know.

After all, almost 16 tons of gold were hauled out of these very hills during the mine’s lifetime.

Britannia Mine Museum Amenities

Britannia Beach was a fully functioning company town . This meant all amenities, including restaurants, recreational activities and shopping, had to be available on-site.

This approach continues at the museum, which contains a full range of amenities in order to amplify your visit.

  • The Chatterbox Café: A café with an extensive selection of sandwiches, snacks, cold drinks and specialty coffees. Movie and TV buffs will enjoy the collection of autographed pictures from cast members of the numerous productions filmed on-site.
  • The Company Store: A gift shop containing a wide variety of souvenirs and gift items, including t-shirts, books and toys that honour the mine’s history. You’ll also find artwork and souvenirs from the local Squamish First Nation.

All aboard the underground train: Panning for gold at Vancouver’s Britannia Mine Museum

Guided tours and multi-sensory attractions transport visitors back in time at what was once the largest copper mine in the British Empire

By Kathryn Anderson & Roadtrippers

After an incredibly scenic 45-minute drive north of Vancouver, the Britannia Mine Museum is impossible to miss. Located just off of British Columbia’s Sea-to-Sky Highway on Squamish First Nations land, the massive white structure juts out from the side of the mountain and commands attention.

The Britannia Mine was a functioning mine from 1904 until 1974. Ore was first discovered here in 1888 by Alexander Forbes, who happened upon a patch of mineralized rock while out hunting. At one point, more than 60,000 people lived nearby and worked in what was once the largest copper mine in the former British Empire. Over seven decades, workers extracted more than 50 million tons of ore that produced copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, silver, and gold. Today—despite floods, fires, and rock slides—a statue of a man opening the mountain to find copper memorializes the great fortunes that the mine provided for the town of Britannia.

In 2010, the mine underwent a massive renovation, opening as the Britannia Mine Museum. Visitors can pan for gold and gemstones, ride an underground train into an early haulage tunnel, learn about the history of the mine, and experience a new multi-sensory, live-action attraction entitled BOOM!

“We’re here to challenge the idea that museum tours have to be dry or boring,” says museum educator Derek A. Jang. “It’s always a pleasure watching people’s faces when they head underground or see the BOOM! show. Even through their [face] masks, I can tell when we’ve blown away their expectations.”

a town with a river and several buildings

Underground train

My tour begins inside of the large white structure named Mill 3. There’s a chill in the air and my first thought is that the raw, exposed walls and pipes would make a great backdrop for a horror movie or underground nightclub. I’m not far off: The mine has been used as a filming location for countless television shows and movies, including The X-Files and Supernatural .

After exiting the Mill, I venture into The Chatterbox Café to warm up with a cappuccino. The walls of the cafe are filled with photos of the long list of actors who have filmed projects at the mine, including Richard Gere, David Hasselhoff, Alicia Silverstone, and Ashley Judd.

The coffee warms me up just in time to head into another cool, dark, and damp environment. I place a hard hat on my head, preparing to be transported back to the early 1900s when miners would hop on a similar train car and head into the mine for a hard day’s work. As I step into the bright yellow car, I’m thankful that I’m not claustrophobic. We descend into an early haulage tunnel that appears to be closing in around us.

A bright yellow train coming through a mine tunnel

Marianna Hammerstrom, the museum’s historic interpreter and our train conductor, shouts over the roar of the train’s engine: “Arms and legs inside at all times!”

As the train enters the underground tunnels, Jang says, “A lot of our guides would say the best part of working here is operating the machinery. I wish I could go back in time and tell my 5-year-old self that I’ll be a train conductor when I grow up.”

Once inside a tunnel, we ride along for a few moments before hopping out to watch staff demonstrate how miners drilled for ore. I witness the evolution of mining equipment from a basic hammer and chisel to a large power drill that noisily chips away at the tunnel wall; thankfully earplugs are provided.

Miners worked by candlelight before switching to carbide lamps, and one of my favorite parts of the underground train ride comes when a staff member shuts off the modern electric lights and lights a small candle; the mine glows eerily.

We exit the tunnel and I have the honor of upholding the long-standing tradition of pulling a rope and sounding an alarm. While the mine was in operation, the sound signified that the miners were finished for the day and everyone had exited safely, bringing relief to everyone in town.

A bright yellow train driven by a woman in a red hard hat inside of an underground mine

Loud noises

Speaking of loud sounds, the newest attraction at the mine is BOOM!, which brings visitors back to the days when all 20 stories of the mine were bustling. During the video presentation, I’m able to experience what the mine looked and sounded like during its heyday. Sparks fly, lights flash, and I hear the deafening roar of the machines that were once ubiquitous in the town of Britannia.

Our tour concludes and we exit through the Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre. More than just a kitschy souvenir shop, the visitor center includes interactive displays, artifacts from the mine’s history, and exhibits such as the Mining Hall of Fame.

In the Gold Panning Pavilion, I gladly accept a blue pan and plunge it into a pool of warm water. I scoop sand and water into my pan and shake it, searching for gold. I repeat this several times but find only sand—it’s not my lucky day, but I have fun anyway.

While walk-ins are allowed at Britannia Mine Museum , it’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Underground tour and boom experience.

A memorable underground train that takes visitors inside a dark mining tunnel where they will experience what life was like for miners in the 70 years Britannia existed as a mine. This guided tour shows guests the drills and machines the miners used over time and what it was like to work deep underground. The tour explains the mineralization process and rich colors produced as minerals are exposed to water and air. It also talks about the negative consequences of mining and what is being done to protect the environment even now, as minerals flow out of the mountains.

BOOM! the newest experience at Britannia Mine Museum offers a multi-sensory experience that brings the historic Mill building back to life. Visitors will be transported back in time by the 12-minute theatrical spectacle that showcases the 20-story architectural marvel that was once a beacon to the community. A National Historic Site and one of the last remaining gravity-fed concentrator mills in North America, the 20-story Mill Building is an awe-inspiring cliff-side building that has been the symbol of Britannia throughout the years. Whether driving towards Vancouver or Whistler on the Sea to Sky Britannia’s Mill #3 could not be missed! Restored in 2007, each of the 14,416 panes of glass was hand puttied into the frames to maintain its heritage. The BOOM experience takes place in Mill #3 after the underground part of the tour at Britannia Mine.

All ages can play in the mining-themed play area where they can have fun in a Super Haul truck and imagine themselves as miners using toy diggers, trucks, and hoppers.

While walking from the underground tunnel towards Mill#3 keep an eye out for the core sheds. They hold an immense archive of rock core samples drilled from the mountainside and collected throughout Britannia’s mining years.

EPCOR Britannia Mine Water Treatment Plant

Britannia Mines had a negative environmental impact on Howe Sound due to acid rock drainage, which occurs naturally when rainwater reacts with oxygen and exposed minerals. Today, the water treatment plant uses natural materials to filter minerals and neutralize surface water runoff collected from the area, ensuring that only clean water flows into Howe Sound. This project has allowed the revitalization of plants and animals in the waterways.

Tips for Visiting

If you are visiting with young children, there are loud noises on the tour. Bring yourself ear plugs if you are going to have to cover your children’s ears. (Although I found my kids were good at covering their own ears.)

Bring a sweater. It is cold in the mine. Even in summer, it is very wet and damp inside.

Animals are not allowed (except service dogs). If you are traveling with your pets in the summertime, you should skip Britannia. Do not leave them in the car.

Give yourself time for the gift shop! There are some great treasures to be found. If you have ever wanted a gold panning pan, you can grab one at the Britannia Mine gift shop.

Britannia Mine FAQ

Britannia Mine closed in 1974 because it was no longer making a profit in the copper industry.

Britannia Mine produced copper (650,000 tons), zinc (137,000 tons), lead (17,000 tons), cadmium (500 tons), silver (188 tons), gold (15.6 tons/500,000 ounces) from the Ore in the mountains.

If you are visiting Vancouver and do not have a car, there are options to visit the Britannia mine. Here is a private vehicle tour that will stop at the mine and allow visitors to visit. Note that the price of this tour does not include the price of admission to the mine. Expect an additional $40 to visit the museum and the copper mine tour (including BOOM, the multi sensory experience). This tour also includes a trip to Shannon falls and optional stops at the Sea to Sky Gondola as well as the Railway museum in Squamish. Here is another private day tour that includes admission to the mine, as well as the Sea to Sky Gondola. It also includes a tip and lunch (make sure you read all of the inclusions so you are not surprised)

Don’t just read about Vancouver, experience it!

Boom at the britannia mine museum.

BOOM! is the latest interactive exhibit at the Britannia Mine Museum that has been making quite a lot of noise in the news lately. This new show shares the history and stories behind the famous Mill No.3 and how it played a significant role during the mine’s operation.

For a quick preview of the show, check out their trailer below:

As some of our Landsea Team recently had the chance to visit the Britannia Mine and experience the show first-hand, we wanted to share our review of this captivating presentation.

The show is narrated with a recording of an enthusiastic young actor with witty puns, who literally brings the Mill alive. With an accompanying screen that displays educational graphs and historical photos, the audience is taken through the process of copper extraction that is engaging and suitable for all ages.

Special Effects

mine tour vancouver

Sparks, moving parts, smells, grinding sounds, and steam are all elements that are a part of the show’s special effects. Their purpose is for the audience to truly experience the actual surroundings experienced by the miners. These effects are in sync with the narration and add an extra bit of flair to the storytelling.

mine tour vancouver

The show itself takes place inside Mill No.3, with a comfortable seating area for guests. As a setting, the Mill is an absolutely incredible piece of industrial architecture, brought back to life with BOOM! Simply walking through the doors will transport you back to the early twentieth century when the Mill was in full operations.

mine tour vancouver

We suggest everyone experiences BOOM! as part of the complete tour offered at the museum. This includes a train ride into a former mine tunnel, seeing the different equipment used throughout the history of modern mining and discovering the harsh conditions faced by the workers. You then exit the tunnel and head to Mill No.3 where the copper extraction process took place and where BOOM! begins. We also recommend exploring the different galleries with various images and mining facts or try panning for gold.

BOOM! is a spectacular addition that compliments the Museum's already diverse presentation of BC’s mining history.  It connects with its audience while providing the perfect amount of information, leaving guests curious and ready to learn more on their own.

Britannia Museum BC: Life of an Isolated Copper Mine Settlement

mine tour vancouver

Sharing is caring!

We spent so much time hiking around Vancouver, Rockies, and Washington state that Britannia Mine Museum is the only museum we have visited during our stay in Vancouver . We noticed it already on our first trip outside the city, but that time we were heading for a hike to Stawamus Chief peaks so we could not stop. As we both like industrial scenery, we knew that we would come back to the mine museum. It turned out that it was almost two months later when we finally had a chance to check that place.

We came back from our trip to the Rockies one day earlier. It was terrible rainy weather in the mountains on Saturday. There was no point to hike. As a result, we ended up in Vancouver already on Saturday evening. Since we had the rental car still for Sunday, we thought this is our chance to see the museum. So far, we visited coal, mercury, amethyst, striped flint, and salt mines, but never in a copper mine, so we didn’t know much about copper ore processing.

Canadian Mining History and Environmental Hazard

We wanted to get to know how the copper mine operates. What attracted first our attention to the mine was the vast, 20-story building of a gravity-fed concentrator for ore processing. It’s called Mill 3 or Concentrator. Standing right next to Sea To Sky Highway is impossible to miss. This building is on the list of National Historic Sites of Canada. The mine started operation in 1900 and about 20 years later became the biggest producer of copper in the whole British Empire and had two settlements for mine workers.

Britannia Beach

One of the settlements, Britannia Beach , remained till the present day. The village was founded where the infamous Britannia Creek reaches the Pacific Ocean (Howe Sound). The creek used to be one of the most polluted waterways in North America due to the mining activity. During the operation, almost 500 kilograms of copper was being deposited into the sound with the contaminated water from the mine. Even when the mine was closed in 1974, the rainwater that kept flowing through the remaining tunnels caused acid rock drainage, and all of it ended up in the Britannia Creek. Only in 2001 treatment plant construction work started. The plant became operational in 2006, and already five years later, fish species that were not present in Howe Sound for years appeared again.

Inside Britannia Mine tunnel

Guided Underground Tour in Britannia Mine

The tour starts with a short mine train ride underground . It’s concise, but you can see some blue spots on the walls indicating that copper ore is still here in the rock. After getting off the train, the walk leads through few corridors in the mine. There is some mining equipment on display and tour guide uses some of it—at least some demonstration, not real digging work. Also, as in probably every mine tour, we experienced how dark it is when electric lights are off. This moment we saw for the first time how carbide lamp works. Probably that was the most exciting point of the underground tour.

The other part we enjoyed was the sound of the mine whistle . It was used to signal if there was an emergency inside the mine, and rescuers were needed. It’s deafening! The whistle is right next to the place where we left the tunnel. And that concluded the underground tour. It was concise, especially if you think that the mine has 210 kilometers of tunnels, and its longest tunnel is 16 km long.

Exit of the mine tunnel with the emergency whistle

Exploring the Old Buildings

Then we headed down to the main building, the Mill 3 . The mine needed a new mill to make the processing of the ore more efficient. It is an impressively huge building, especially when you enter inside of it. Unfortunately, we could only explore the ground floor of it and could not venture up the stairs to the top like workers of the mill did every day. The guide explained the process of extracting copper powder from the ore. The description of the operation concluded the tour, but we could now freely walk around the building of the mine.

That was an excellent time to get to know more of the history. There is a lot of beautiful informative boards. The most interesting for us was A to Z exhibition. It shows the history of the mine and the people who worked for the company. The exhibit is in a building that used to house offices of clerks and management of the company.

The most exciting part of the visit was actually to get to know the history of the people who worked for the mining company and lived in the mine settlements. The settlements were isolated. Britannia Beach is nowadays accessible by road from Vancouver, but this was not the case until 1956. Before that, the only way to reach the settlement was by sea. The second mine settlement was up in the mountains, making it even more secluded. Only people working with the company could stay in the colonies. The exhibit shows nicely the history and everyday life of the workers that were a mix of different nations and cultures.

Mill 3 from outside

After visiting the mine buildings, we headed towards the exit, but we had to stop on the way for a picture with a big haul truck . That was, in fact, another thing apart from the mill building that attracted us to visit the mine.

The haul truck

Since the rocks in the mine contain not only the ore but also some gold, the museum offers a possibility to try your skills in gold panning . All in all, a place worth visiting! A bit expensive for the price of admission, though, but as you could imagine maintaining the mine and keeping it accessible for tourists and not letting it deteriorate costs. Probably children enjoy the visit to the mine much more than we did, especially the underground part with a lot of machinery. On the other hand, exhibits in the mine buildings outside are more suitable for adults as there is quite a lot of text. Gold panning is the only part offering more interaction.

After or Instead of the Visit

If you cannot visit the mine, watch X Files where the mine appears in a few episodes. One of the Scooby-Doo movies features it too! And on the way back to Vancouver, go the first few kilometers to Squamish direction. You can check Shannon Falls and enjoy outdoor lunch with a view of the waterfall.

How to Get too Britannia Museum Vancouver

The most straightforward approach is driving from Vancouver by car to the Mining Museum. It is 50 kilometers away from our favorite Canadian city and takes about 40 minutes to get there.

Copper mining is so impressive, especially considering the limited technology they used. What a cool tour to step back in time and see how it operated! Did you try panning for gold while you were there?

Life must have been tough in the old days. The mine does look rather spooky. I love exploring old mines as they are full of history and interesting stories.

Hehe I’m from Vancouver so I’ve heard a lot about this place. it’s actually where many kiddies do “educational” field trips, but somehow I’ve never been. Like you said, the pricetag is kind of high so I think that’s what has held me back. Good to see you had a nice time! Maybe one day I’ll check it out 🙂

This is so cool–I’m really interested in this kind of thing as well. I was in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic last month and tried desperately to visit the silver mine there but tours had sold out so I missed out on it. I had no idea this sort of thing existed in Vancouver!

Whoa, super neat! I bet that train ride was really interesting and fun! Too bad you don’t find your price of admission in that gold panning!

I don’t know who will enjoy this more, my kids or me. Seems really fun especially with all the big trucks. Have to agree with what Gareth (yes I read comments too) that it might get a bit claustrophobic but I think if I go as a tour group, it should be okay.

As something of a history buff, this tour seems right up my alley. That being said, my inner claustrophobic might not agree! Nevertheless, the tour looks like a really great insight into the lives of men who did an extremely important job and one that few of us would consider doing today. Great read and thoroughly enjoyed

What an interesting museum! It’s cool that you’re able to actually get a tour inside the mine and get a sense for what it would have been like to work there. I’ve never heard of this museum so it’s good to have on my radar for a future trip to Vancouver!

Visiting the Britannia Mine Museum in British Columbia

Table of Contents

During my stay in Vancouver, BC I had some time to explore the surrounding areas. While on a road trip to Squamish and Whistle I passed the Britannia Mine, which you can’t miss because of the huge mill building “leaning” against Mount Sheer. As I had a day off, I decided to drive out to visit and explore the Britannia Mine Museum.

The Britannia Mine Museum is only about a 45-minute drive from Vancouver or a 10-minute drive from Squamish. Britannia Mine Museum is located on the Sea-to-Sky Highway on Howe Sound in Britannia Beach.

The Britannia Mine was once the largest copper mine in the British Commonwealth. Ore was first discovered here in 1888 and the mine opened in 1904. With an operational live span of 70 years, this mine was during its peak times the biggest mining operation in Canada. During its peak, the mine produced 7000 tons of ore per day. The mine produced over 650,000 tons of copper during its lifetime. Copper was the main ore mined here, but besides copper, the mine also produced zinc, lead, cadmium, silver, and gold.

To separate the ore from the rock, a mill, also known as a concentrator, was built. The 20 story building you see today against Mount Sheer is Mill 3. The first mill didn’t work as it should and therefore a second mill was built. This mill burned down and was replaced with Mill No. 3 you see today. Mill No. 3 is a gravity-fed concentrator that was highly innovative when it was built in the early 1920s.

Back then the mine was only accessible by boat until the highway and railway got completed in 1965. High operating costs and taxes eventually forced the mine to close on November 1, 1974. Once the mine was closed, the company did not make an effort to clean up the mine and the produced chemical waste. Besides being one of the biggest mining operations back then, it was also one of the biggest pollutants of Britannia Creek and Howe Sound. Runoff and rainwater which flow through the tunnels of the mine, mixed with oxygen and the high sulfide of the waste rock, created a condition called acid rock drainage (ARD). A water treatment plant was installed, which collects all the runoff from the mine, cleans it, and then releases the clean water back into Britannia Creek and Howe Sound. About 4.2 billion liters of contaminated water run through the treatment plant annually which removes an average of 226,000 kg of heavy metal contaminants. Due to reclamation efforts, the local waters of Britannia Creek and Howe Sound are now 99% cleared of the heavy metals and support local ocean life once again.

In 1975 the museum opened, back then under the name BC Museum of Mining. After numerous expensive renovations, the site was renamed to Britannia Mine Museum in October 2010.

Visiting Britannia Mine Museum

As my visit to the mine was rather spontaneous, I just hopped into my rental car and started driving. The drive to the mine museum is easy and very scenic as you drive along the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Hwy 99). You can’t really miss the mine, no matter from what direction you are coming. Driving north you will see the gigantic haul truck and a sign next to the road while heading south on Hwy 99 you will see the Concentrator way before you even notice the sign on the side of the street.

Parking is complimentary and you just need to find an open spot. If you are planning to come here, I highly recommend you to make reservations ahead of time, which you can do on the official website . Most of the mine can be explored on foot but while you are visiting the museum, you can’t miss out on the 45 minutes guided underground tour. This is the highlight of the whole museum. Especially if you are a family or a bigger group, reservations are recommended.

mine tour vancouver

Admission prices are on the high side, with $36.70 CAD for an adult ticket. Trust me, the admission is really worth every cent. Besides that, you help preserve and operate this place for many generations to come.

Buying Tickets

You have two choices for buying tickets. Either online or at the ticket window. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Ticket Window

This is the most flexible option if you are just driving through the area and want to stop by. Also great for a spontaneous and unplanned visit to the mine. Downside: All the tour spots could be already booked and you won’t get on the underground tour. Believe me, you have to take the tour, otherwise, it’s not worth coming here. It really is a must.

Online Booking

You can also buy your ticket online, which is great for bigger groups to secure a spot on the underground tour. But the downsides with online reservations are, that you have to make the reservation at least 24h ahead of your planned arrival and that you have to be there for your selected tour time. If you arrive past your reserved tour time, the staff will try to accommodate you on the next tour if there are open spots available. This means your group might get split up or you will miss the tour completely. Make sure you are there on time for your tour. Rather arrive early and use the time to explore the rest of the grounds.

It’s ultimately up to you and your schedule on what kind of ticket purchase you decide on. I bought my ticket at the ticket window and was able to get on the next scheduled tour for that day. Tours run every 30 minutes starting at 10 a.m.

After entering the Britannia Mine Museum Grounds

Once again, and I can’t say it often enough. Make sure you are here ahead of time for your scheduled tour. It depends on how much time you have now available before your tour starts. You can either explore the other exhibits at the museum or make your way slowly up to the tour start point. I would start heading that way at least 15 minutes before your tour starts, to be on the safe side. It is a small trip to get there from the movie theatre.

mine tour vancouver

The restrooms are located next to the main entrance and make sure you are ready for your 45-minute long underground tour. There won’t be any restrooms along the way.

Exhibits at the Britannia Mine Museum

The beaty-lundin visitor centre.

While you are waiting for your tour time, I would start to watch the movie about the history of the mine. The movie theatre is located right behind the main entrance. Watch the short movie, which gives you a lot of information about history and life in and around the mine. While exiting the theatre, look at the mining exhibits in the building along your way out. Inside the building, you also find a mineral gallery and the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame where you can learn about Canadian mining pioneers. Did you know what pieces of your everyday life have copper inside them? A few examples are shown inside the visitor center. This is the same building which also houses the ticket window and the gift shop.

The Giant Haul Truck

You can’t miss this exhibit. It’s visible from the road while passing by and once on the museum grounds, you can’t really get past this one without noticing it. This gigantic Wabco 3200B haul truck weighs over 800,000 lbs and is more than 20 feet tall. A great place for a photo opp.

Next, to the haul truck and snack bar, kids can enjoy this mining-themed play area.

This historic machine shop was built in 1908 and is now home to a number of historic pieces of equipment and machines.

This shed houses core samples drilled from the mountainside. Core samples helped to determine in which direction to drive tunnels inside the mine to find more ore and minerals. All these samples give you a “map” of the interior of the mountain. The core shed is part of the guided tour.

The Village Board Walk & Gold Panning Area

Stroll along the boardwalk to see more heritage buildings located on the premisses. There are seventeen historic buildings on this site which date way back when the mill was still in operation.

Once you are ready for it, try your own luck at the Gold Panning Area. Pan for real gold. Yes, there is gold in there, somewhere. You just have to find it. Now you know how people felt back then when they were desperate to find gold. It could be right underneath their fingertips but you won’t see it. Follow the instructions or ask a staff member how to pan for gold. It’s definitely fun and I got a bit addicted as I found my first “piece” of gold. But don’t put your life-savings to pan for gold here. You won’t get rich, but it is a nice souvenir to bring home if you find small pieces of gold or other interesting rocks.

Underground Tour

This is the highlight of your visit here. A remarkable experience like no other. You might have heard that before, but you are about to get on a historic train ride into the mountain and a fully immersive tour about what it was like to work underground. I made sure I was on time for my tour and was the first one to arrive up at the train pavilion. Just follow the signs throughout the grounds, which will point you to the train pavilion, which is the start point of the tour.

While I was waiting for the tour to start, a friend of mine and I were the only people there. Just a few minutes before the tour time, another group joined us waiting for the start of the tour. While we were waiting, all of a sudden we could hear a noise coming out of the tunnel, it was the mining train arriving at the pavilion and out tour guide stepped out of the train and welcomed us. Hillary was our guide for the next 45 minutes. She introduced herself and gave us a safety briefing. We all were required to wear hardhats while on the train and in the mine. As we were all geared up, we hopped aboard the train. This is the same train, workers used to get to their workplace inside one of the many tunnels of the mine.

mine tour vancouver

As we drove into the mountain, we passed other tunnels splitting off from this one and a dynamite storage location. Don’t worry, it’s just replica dynamite. After an unexpected short train ride, we disembarked and walked into one of the tunnels. Here Hillary showed us how workers used to drill into the rock of the mountains. Either for collecting core samples or to drill holes for explosives. This is a fully immersive experience and Hillary turned on the drills so we could also hear what it was like to work here. She gave us a heads up so we could cover our ears. But it’s hard to cover my ears with both hands and operate my camera. 😉

mine tour vancouver

We continued on to another tunnel branching off the main train tunnel. Hillary demonstrated what light sources workers used down here and even turned off the lights of this segment of the tunnel. It’s amazing when you consider we have electricity, LED lights and all that. Back then they started out with candles. Can you believe it? She also demonstrated one of the mining advantages over time, where miners had pneumatic operated equipment to load the lorries with the blasted rock to transport it out to the concentrator. Yes, this piece of equipment is also very noisy.

mine tour vancouver

After a short walk, we made it out of the mountain on the other side. Outside of the tunnel is an air horn, which we also got to hear. Yes, it’s very loud. Around the exit are some more historic mining machines. From there we walked downhill and stopped at the core sheds. Hillary gave us a detailed explanation of how they used the core samples back then. After another short walk, we entered Mill No.3.

mine tour vancouver

This building was the heart of the mining operation. The gravity-fed concentrator separated the ore from the rocks with chemical processes. It’s one of the last remaining gravity-fed concentrators in North America. Inside you get to experience the sheer size of this building. Look around you. Can you imagine that every one of the 14,416 panes of glass was hand-puttied into the frames to maintain its heritage back in 2007 when the building was renovated? Mill No.3 houses now a new immersive experience called Boom!

mine tour vancouver

Boom! Experience in Mill No.3

This new experience opened in June 2019. Unfortunately, a few months after I visited but I hope I get to go back and see it with my own eyes. Boom! is highly rated and while I visited the Mill No.3, I was able to get a glimpse of the almost finished installation.

The Britannia Mine Museum is well worth a visit and the drive. If you are visiting the area for the first time, alone the drive to the mine is worth the effort. The mine itself is a world-class experience that is based right on the same site as the original mine. It’s great for the whole family. This is probably a dream come true if you never been in any mine before. Mines are just an awesome experience and a masterpiece of ingenuity. I love visiting mines, no matter if abandoned, now a museum or still active like the Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine . Being underground is a great adventure I enjoy very much. At Britannia Mine Museum, you get to go for a little bit into tunnels which used to be part of the mine before they got turned into a tourist attraction. Much of the museum grounds were under construction during my visit. Preparing the mine for the coming summer season. It’s great that they put so much effort into recreating this place and also make it tourist-friendly.

Canada’s economy has long been reliant on its wealth of natural resources. While the country is today home to a growing number of high-tech and modern industries, natural resources like lumber, oil and gold remain a mainstay and the harvesting of those resources remains woven into the fabric of the nation..

Visitors can bear witness to that history and the human stories behind it by touring one of the country’s many mines that have been transformed into destinations that not only tell the stories of the places and the people who worked there, but also teach visitors about the minerals and ores that were extracted there and their importance both locally and nationally. Here are seven examples for you to check out, several of which are Canadian Signature Experiences .

Bell island #2 mine and community museum 13 compressor hill (bell island, newfoundland).

Newfoundland’s Bell Island mine was an underground iron ore mine that was vital to the island’s economy and provided crucial material for the Allied war effort during both World Wars. Today, large amounts of the mine are  flooded, but enough of the tunnels remain dry that you can still go inside to see for yourself how it operated. The attached museum explains the mine’s history and draws special attention to the island’s shipwrecks that were the result of German U-Boat attacks during 1942 that tried to stop ore shipments to the mainland. Adventurous scuba divers can explore the wrecks with OceanQuest Adventures . https://www.bellislandminetour.com/

There was a time that coal powered the world and the mines at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia were among the nation’s busiest. Today, that history is celebrated at the Miners’ Museum and visitors can go underground to learn about the dangers of working in a colliery led by actual coal miners who tell first-hand tales of their time underground. Be sure to time your visit to enjoy a performance by The Men of the Deeps, their famed choir of working and retired coal miners from Cape Breton Island. http://www.minersmuseum.com/

Springhill Miners’ Museum (Springhill, Nova Scotia)

Springhill is famous as the hometown of singer Anne Murray and the Anne Murray Centre is definitely worth a visit if you’re in town, but don’t miss a tour of the coal mine that was infamous for one of Canada’s worst mining disasters. In 1958, an earthquake, known to miners as a “bump,” killed 74 miners. Amazingly, 12 men were discovered to be alive six days later and another seven three days later and all were rescued from a depth of 3,960 metres, making it one of the deepest mine rescues ever conducted in the country. Sadly, it’s just one of several deadly events that happened in this mine that you’ll learn about during your tour. https://www.novascotia.com/see-do/attractions/tour-a-mine-springhill-miners-museum/1317

Science North – Dynamic Earth (Sudbury, Ontario)

Canada remains one of the world’s top 10 producers of nickel and there’s no place more connected with this metal than Sudbury. The Big Nickel that sits outside Science North’s Dynamic Earth exhibit is just one reminder of that fact. Inside, visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience that will teach them about earth science and includes an underground tour of a demonstration mine designed to resemble the nickel and copper mining operations nearby. Fun fact: the high concentration of metals in this region is from a giant asteroid that collided with the Earth eons ago. https://www.sciencenorth.ca/dynamic-earth/

Atlas Coal Mine (Drumheller, Alberta)

Drumheller is justifiably famous for its dinosaur connection, but if you look at the coloured layers of the nearby Badlands, you’ll see bands of black earth. That’s coal made from organic matter buried from some of the same geologic eras that fossil hunters work in. The result is that coal mines once dotted this region in the 19th century, bringing a flood of people from across the country and around the world to dig out the black stuff. Today, one of the only remnants of that era is the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site. Visitors can ride a train car, climb up the last wooden tipple in Canada then go into the mine itself, but only a small section is accessible as the vast majority of the tunnels have been sealed for eternity. https://atlascoalmine.ab.ca/

Britannia Mine Museum, (Squamish, British Columbia)

If you’re on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, driving from Vancouver to Whistler in British Columbia, you might find yourself spending some time in Squamish and while its natural delights are inviting, you’d kick yourself if you missed the Britannia Mine Museum. This national historic site was once a thriving copper mine and is now celebrated with a fantastic museum that delights visitors of all ages and features an exciting underground tour that takes you through the tunnels on a mining train. https://www.britanniaminemuseum.ca/

Dredge Number 4 (Dawson City, Yukon)

Not all mines are underground. Some are open pits and some are on the surface. In the Yukon, a lot of the gold that was harvested during the Yukon’s famed Gold Rush was found in the rivers and creeks as placer gold. Some of it was collected by individuals working their gold pans, but larger, industrial operations used heavy machinery to extract gold from the rocks and gravel. One example that remains, is the Steampunk-looking Dredge No. 4 near Dawson City. During its lifetime from 1913 to 1959, it dredged nine tons of gold from the land. It’s now a national historic site that is open to visitors curious about this intriguing part of Canadian history. https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/yt/klondike/culture/lhn-nhs_dn4

Vancouver canucks at nashville predators game 4 odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

The Vancouver Canucks take on the Nashville Predators in Game 4 of their best-of-7 Western Conference, 1st-round series at Bridgestone Arena Sunday. The Canucks lead the series 2-1. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. ET (TBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canucks vs. Predators odds , and make our expert NHL picks and predictions .

The Canucks stole Game 3 by a 2-1 final score Friday. The win was largely due to going 2-for-3 on the power play. G Casey DeSmith was awesome in place of Thatcher Demko (knee), who is out for the series. The former Penguin stopped 29 of 30 shots he saw. C J.T. Miller had a goal and an assist, and LD Quinn Hughes assisted on both goals.

The Preds couldn’t get anything going as they went 0-for-5 on the power play and gave up both goals on the PK. They outshot Vancouver 30-12 in the game. RW Luke Evangelista foiled the shutout with just over 3 minutes to go in the game, but they couldn’t sink the equalizer.

  • Moneyline (ML) : Canucks +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Predators -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Canucks +1.5 (-250) | Predators -1.5 (+195)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Canucks at Predators projected goalies

Casey DeSmith (12-9-6, 2.89 GAA, .896 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Juuse Saros (35-24-5, 2.86 GAA, .906 SV%, 3 SO)

DeSmith is 1-1 with a 2.02 GAA and .911 SV% in the series. Game 3 was just his 3rd start in the playoffs in the 32-year-old’s career. The Canucks blocked 30 shots in front of him as he stopped 29 of 30 in Game 3.

Saros did what he could in Game 3, stopping 10 of 12 shots he faced. Again, the 2 goals were scored on the power play. Saros is 1-2 with a 2.03 GAA and .880 SV%. He has yet to face more than 20 shots in a game.

Canucks at Predators picks and predictions

Predators 4, Canucks 2

This series is likely going 7 games, and I’m still confident in Nashville outlasting the young Canucks. If you want some of that action and have a free bet, the Predators are +200 to win the series.

I look for them to work on some things with the extra man. LD Roman Josi said after Game 3 that they needed to move more on the PP. I look for that to be corrected, and the PREDATORS -125 is where I’m going.

Puck line/Against the spread

I’m not a fan of the spread either way here.

I like JUUSE SAROS UNDER 24.5 SAVES ( -105 ). He has faced 12, 18 and 20 shots on goal in the series, and Nashville matched a franchise-record with 30 blocked shots in Game 2.

The Under has hit in 2 straight after the Over prevailed in Game 1. I look for things to open up a little more, and this 5.5 looks ripe. The Over is 7-3-0 in the last 10 meetings.

TAKE THE OVER 5.5 ( -115 ).

Blackwater gold mine near Prince George, B.C., nears completion

The new Blackwater gold-silver mine being built south of Prince George is more than 70 per cent complete and the mine’s owners say they are on track to pour first gold sometime in the second half of this year.

Artemis Gold Inc. (TSX-V:ARTG) reports that the new Blackwater mine, 160 kilometres southwest of Prince George, is now 73 per cent complete. To date, Artemis has spent $523 million bringing the mine to that stage. The total capital cost of the new mine is expected to be $730 million to $750 million.

The project’s workforce peaked at 600 in March, the company said, and 320 workers continued to be employed on the project in the first quarter of this year.

The company said work continues on its tailings dam, processing plant and new transmission line.

As for the mine fleet, Artemis said two 400-tonne hydraulic backhoe excavators, six 240-tonne rigid frame haul trucks and two large mining front-end loaders are fully assembled.

“The remainder of the fleet to support initial operations is on site and nearing completion,” the company said in a construction update. “Additional units will be added to the fleet as operations ramp up.

“Looking ahead to Q2 2024, we expect to complete the construction and commissioning of the initial phase of the mining fleet, advance the tailings storage facility main dam wall, and move to the completion of the construction activity in the processing facility,” said Artemis COO Jeremy Langford. “At the end of Q1 2024, we remain on track for first gold pour in H2 2024.”

“The remainder of 2024 will be transformational for Artemis Gold as we progress the Blackwater Mine, a tier one asset in a tier one jurisdiction, into production,” said Artemis CEO Steven Dean.

The Blackwater mine will employ roughly 300 miners in the first phase of operation and up to 450 in later phase expansions.

(This story has been updated to correct the estimated date for pouring first gold.)
