Stephen L. Betts

Six-time CMA and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year Miranda Lambert will light up concert stages throughout 2016 with her latest headlining trek. And in keeping with Lambert’s penchant for more traditional-leaning country music, she’s named it the Keeper of the Flame Tour, which is set to visit 30 U.S. cities. Joining Lambert will be special guests Kip Moore and Brothers Osborne. Tickets for for select shows go on sale January 29th.

Lambert is also set to head across the pond with shows scheduled for London (March 11th), Dublin (March 12th) and Glasgow (March 13th) as part of the annual Country to Country Festival.

Beginning in April, Lambert will also pile on the miles and hit stadiums with Kenny Chesney’s  Spread the Love Tour . Sam Hunt and Old Dominion are also on the bill for that trek, which is currently scheduled to run through August.

Earlier this week, Lambert was in Nashville, where she played an unplugged show with special guests Maren Morris, Ashley Monroe, songwriter Shane McAnally and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley.

Miranda Lambert, Kip Moore, and Brothers Osborne Bring Keeper of the Flame Tour To Woodstock Grounds

DSC06291

“I was nervous because this is the place where all the magic happened,” Miranda Lambert admits to the packed arena, “but how about we make some magic of our own here tonight?”  The Keeper of the Flame Tour  featuring Brothers Osborne, Kip Moore, and Miranda Lambert, kicked off its second weekend in the legendary Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the exact grounds where Woodstock took place in 1969. This outdoor venue seats 15,000 guests and was packed for the night’s festivities. Although it felt more like March with the weather a cool 45 degrees by the time Lambert took the stage, the fans packed out the arena, some in seats, some on blankets and beach chairs on the designated lawn area.

DSC06102

John and TJ Osborne were the opening act for the tour, promoting their debut album  Pawn Shop , and opened the show by singing into a mega phone to start the song “Greener Pastures.” The duo brought energy and their signature groove to the arena. Singing their current single “21 Summer” and of course their first number one hit “Stay A Little Longer,” they were the perfect opening act for a night full of country music. TJ explained that he loved this venue and how it was good to be upstate, “getting a little weird and checking out where Woodstock took place.” As usual, TJ took lead on vocals and John received a standing ovation for his 3 minute long guitar solo at the conclusion of “Stay a Little Longer.” The pair may be opening major tours now but we are sure it won’t be long till upcoming artists are opening for them.

DSC06214

The always entertaining Kip Moore was next to perform. Despite the cool air, he wore a cut off tank with his signature backwards hat and combat boots. Playing a variety of songs from his debut album Up All Night  and his latest release Wild Ones,  Moore’s raspy yet soulful voice echoed throughout the outdoor arena and drew fans in. In between songs, Moore took swigs straight from a bottle of Evan Williams, and more than once held it up as a toast to the plentiful fans drinking along. Particular high notes of his set included Moore alone on stage grooving to his song “Backseat” and his acoustic version of “Hey Pretty Girl.”

DSC06239

During the fan favorite “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” Moore raced through the crowd to stand and sing the final verse right in front of the lawn area; the audience rushed to get close to him and sang along. He ended the night by thanking his fans and Miranda Lambert for taking him out on this tour. “I love doing what I get to do, so thank you.”

DSC06246

The sun has set and Miranda Lambert walks to her sparkly “M” mic stand. Opening with her uptempo hits “Fastest Girl In Town” and “Baggage Claim” she doesn’t have to tell the fans to get on their feet, they were already standing from the first notes of her first song. With just enough sparkle on her guitar straps and in her eyes it was apparent that this tour is the perfect summer getaway for anyone looking to hear good music and forget about life for a while. If anyone was expecting to hear Lambert disclose about her otherwise public personal life during her 90 minute set, they walked away disappointed. She danced around the stage, interacting with her band and played all of her hits including “Heart Like Mine,” “All Kinds of Kinds,” and “White Liar.”

Highlights of her set included her contribution to Dave Cobb’s compilation album  Southern Family ,  “Sweet By and By” which showcases her strong yet subtle vocal ability. Another highlight came when Lambert explained that she had met a fan earlier in the evening at the meet and greet who explained that she had lost her son when he was only two years old and how “Over You” had really helped her through. “It’s okay to cry and miss them and celebrate them,” she tells the audience before singing the vulnerable tune.

She also sang songs from her latest album Platinum  including “Automatic,” “Bathroom Sink,” and the fierce “Little Red Wagon.” Thanking the crowd for spending their hard earned money on country music and beer she closed her set with “Gun Powder and Lead” which left the audience screaming for more, even chanting her name.

DSC06313

For her encore she welcomed back to the stage Brothers Osborne and Kip Moore to pay homage to the very land they were now performing on by singing “Me and Bobby McGee,” the Janis Joplin hit. The well rounded lineup for the tour featured three different kinds of country artists, all bringing their own brand of music to the genre.  If you haven’t gotten your Keeper of the Flame tickets yet, below are the tour stops for the rest of the summer.

Bristow, VA Charlotte, NC Cleveland, OH Chicago, IL Columbia, MD Darien Center, NY Fayetteville, AR Hartford, CT Indianapolis, IN Irvine, CA Jacksonville, FL Los Angeles, CA New Orleans, LA Omaha, NE Orange Beach, AL Raleigh, NC Rogers, AR San Antonio, TX Saratoga Springs, NY St. Louis, MO Tampa, FL Virginia Beach, VA West Palm Beach, FL

Miranda Lambert has gone from Nashville Star runner-up in 2003 to country superstar, with five hit records on the Billboard 200 in the past decade, including her No. 1 album,  Platinum.  She’s currently gearing up to perform across the country on her “Keeper of the Flame” tour, kicking off later this month, featuring special guests Kip Moore and Brothers Osborne . Billboard asked Lambert to share with us what it’s like being on the road by creating a playlist to soundtrack her journey.

“We log a lot of miles on the road and listen to a lot of music driving from city to city,” said Lambert. “ I’m looking forward to jamming to these songs, and many others, as we drive across the country on the Keeper of the Flame Tour.”

5. Otis Redding , “These Arms of Mine”:  Life is not complete without Otis in it.

14.  Chris Knight , “Oil Patch Town” : This song basically describes my hometown of Lindale, TX (and a hundred other little towns, I’m sure). It’s about a bunch of kids with nothing to do but drive around and look for trouble.

Songfacts®:

  • Miranda Lambert penned this empowering anthem to inner strength with Natalie Hemby, who's been writing with Lambert since 2009's Revolution , and Taylor Swift hitmaker Liz Rose (" Teardrops on My Guitar ").
  • The song originated from a late-night text message sent by Lambert to Hemby. "One time, [Lambert] sent me a text in the middle of the night," Hemby recalled to American Songwriter . "It said, 'like fireflies in the rain.' I think she was watching a storm. I texted back, 'I'm the keeper of the flame.'" Lambert and Hemby later hashed out the rest of the song with the help of Rose.
  • The track was written during the very public dissolution of Lambert's marriage to Blake Shelton . During the song Lambert determines to move forward as she reflects on her responsibilities as: The keeper of the flame The teller of the story The keeper of the flame For the ones that came before me Lambert finds courage by looking back at the craft and bravery of her songwriting forerunners.

The Meaning Behind The Song: Keeper of the Flame by Miranda Lambert

  • Introduction

As a music enthusiast, there are certain songs that hold a special place in my heart. One such song is “Keeper of the Flame” by Miranda Lambert. I first heard this powerful track on a late summer evening, and since then, it has become an anthem for strength and resilience in my life.

Table of Contents

The Message

In “Keeper of the Flame,” Miranda Lambert beautifully encapsulates the legacy and responsibility that comes with being an artist. The song opens with the lines, “I’m walking in their footsteps, I’m singing their old songs.” It immediately sets the tone for the deep reverence Lambert has for those who have paved the way for her.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase “I’m the keeper of the flame” multiple times. Lambert sees herself as the one carrying the torch, the storyteller, and the protector of the heritage handed down by her musical predecessors. She acknowledges her duty to honor those who came before her and to ignite the spirits of future generations, comparing them to “little pilot lights waiting to ignite like fireflies in the rain.”

The second verse of the song reflects on the struggles that Lambert, like many artists, faces. She admits to feeling burned out at times, waiting for a spark to reignite her creative fire. Despite the challenges, Lambert declares that she will never let her flame die.

The bridge of the song explores the various emotions and battles an artist goes through. From drowning to fighting, screaming to hiding, losing to winning, Lambert finds solace by going back to the beginning. It symbolizes her return to her roots, reminding herself of her purpose as the keeper of the flame.

The final chorus emphasizes that Lambert’s mission is not for personal glory but for those “little pilot lights” waiting to shine. She wants to inspire and light up the world, just like fireflies dancing in the rain.

“Keeper of the Flame” is a powerful anthem for anyone who feels a sense of responsibility to honor their heritage and blaze a trail for the future. Lambert’s message resonates with anyone who understands the weight of their role in their respective fields.

This song reminds me of my own journey as a music lover and writer. I remember stumbling upon this song at a friend’s house, and from the first note, I was captivated. It touched something deep within me and reignited my passion for storytelling.

“Keeper of the Flame” is more than just a song; it’s a testament to the significance of acknowledging and preserving our roots. Miranda Lambert’s heartfelt lyrics and soulful voice deliver a powerful message about the importance of carrying the torch and keeping the flame alive.

As I listen to this song, I am reminded of my own responsibility as a music enthusiast and storyteller. It encourages me to honor the traditions that have shaped me while nurturing the fire within me to create something meaningful for future generations.

In a world where trends come and go, “Keeper of the Flame” reminds us all of the importance of legacy and staying true to ourselves. It serves as a heartfelt reminder that we are all keepers of our own flames, and we should strive to shine our light in a way that can inspire generations to come.
