Honeymoon Itinerary: A Mini-Moon in Lanai, Hawaii

moon hawaii travel guide

After tying the knot in a seaside garden ceremony in Kauai, Katie Durko , founder of social media agency The Edit , and music manager Adrian Karvinen jetted off for a mini-moon on the secluded island of Lanai. “It was a quick plane ride away and allowed us to relax and recharge for five days after a week of wedding festivities,” Katie says. The newlyweds stayed at the Four Seasons Lanai, one of the few hotels in the 141-square mile, privately owned island, and enjoyed a short week of eating, hiking, and lots of poolside cocktail drinking. For those researching potential honeymoon destinations, Katie shares her guide (and personal pics) to a dreamy getaway at one of the most romantic places in Hawaii.

Cat Sanctuary: Also known as ‘The Furr Seasons,’ this is the perfect day time activity for all the cat lovers out there—myself included!

Koele Ranch: Meet the most adorable mini horses at the stables here!

Hulopo’e Bay: A beautiful beach that is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. Great for snorkeling, surfing or just relaxing in one of the hotel chaise lounges.

Hotel Pool: The Four Season’s adult-only pool is tucked among the palm trees and was designed to mimic the island’s cliffs. Perfect spot for laying out with a good book.

Manele Golf Course: My husband’s favorite activity while we were in Lanai! It is the only golf course in Hawaii that has panoramic ocean views at every single hole. Bonus: the golf carts have GPS, so you can order food and drinks to be delivered to you on the green at any time.

Sweetheart Rock Hike: One of the most iconic landmarks on Lanai and just a short hike from the hotel.

Lanai Movie Theatre: On Tuesday nights, the movie theatre in town offers complimentary movie tickets for Four Seasons guests.

FS Breakfast Buffet: The buffet at the Four Seasons is incredible. You’ll be full until dinner!

Malibu Farms: Get your California fix here. This poolside restaurant offers organic and locally sourced food from the Malibu Farm Harvest Garden on property.

Nobu: Not to be missed! Menu ingredients come straight from the restaurant’s own Lanai farm. Make sure to sit on the patio for stunning views of the bay during sunset.

Cocktail class: Every day at 5:00 p.m., the Four Seasons offers a complimentary cocktail making class. It’s a fun way to meet other hotel guests and learn a new skill. Plus, who doesn’t love a free cocktail or two?

Lanai Ohana Poke Market: Go here for truly authentic poke. Fresh ahi tuna served in a paper bowl over rice—no frills here!

This sunny island paradise seemingly made for two opens her arms to honeymooners. Spectacular scenic beauty envelops you like a giant cloak. Every day is flower-filled and full of fun. You’ll find a hibiscus on your breakfast tray, a rainbow over your shoulder, and a smile on every face. 132 islands dot 16,000 miles of the North Pacific to comprise the most exotic state of the USA.

Rich Polynesian culture and an “Aloha” (welcome) spirit invite you to relax and explore. Six main islands, each with its own look and personality, beckon. About Hawaii

Average cost of a one week hawaii honeymoon.

Congrats, lovebirds! Planning a romantic Hawaiian honeymoon? Let’s talk budgeting for an unforgettable week in paradise.

The initial step to crafting your dream honeymoon involves securing flights to the picturesque islands of Hawaii. Anticipate spending roughly $800 to $1,200 per person for round-trip airfare. Factors like the travel season, departure city, and booking window influence prices. Keep an eye out for early-bird discounts and fleeting airline promotions. Your flexibility with travel dates can often be the key to unlocking affordable airfare.

Accommodations

The realm of accommodations in Hawaii is as diverse as its landscapes. Whether your heart desires a cozy beachfront bungalow or a luxurious ocean-facing resort, the options are abundant. Budget-wise, allocate approximately $200 to $400 per night for mid-range hotels or vacation rentals. Over the course of a week, this translates to a potential range of $1,400 to $2,800. Keep in mind that visiting during the shoulder seasons—spring or fall—often leads to more pocket-friendly rates.

Daily Expenses

As each day unfurls in paradise, so do the opportunities for memorable experiences. Allow a daily budget of $150 to $300 to cover meals, activities, and transportation for both of you. Delight in local gastronomic delights, explore the island’s natural wonders, and perhaps set aside a bit extra for mementos of your journey.

Average Total Cost

When all the puzzle pieces are assembled, a one-week honeymoon in Hawaii could span from $4,000 to $7,000, enveloping airfare, accommodations, and daily expenses for two. Bear in mind that these estimates are broad strokes, and your personal choices may result in slight variations.

While financial planning is pivotal, remember that the essence of your honeymoon resides in the shared moments that define this chapter of your love story. From relishing the sun’s descent over Waikiki Beach to snorkeling amidst vibrant marine life, and even savoring a candlelit dinner beneath the starlit canopy, your Hawaiian honeymoon will definitely be a memorable experience.

Best Time to Visit Hawaii

The best time for a Hawaii honeymoon is largely determined by your preferences and what you’re looking to experience during your romantic getaway. Hawaii enjoys pleasant temperatures year-round, but there are a few factors to consider:

Hawaii has a tropical climate with relatively consistent temperatures throughout the year . However, the months from April to October are generally warmer and drier, making them popular for beach activities and outdoor adventures.

The peak tourist season in Hawaii aligns with the winter months, from mid-December to March , when many travelers escape colder climates. If you prefer a quieter and more intimate honeymoon experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June ) and fall (September to October).

Peak tourist season often comes with higher prices for accommodations and activities. You might find better deals on flights and accommodations during the shoulder seasons, which can help you stretch your honeymoon budget .

Whale Watching

If you’re interested in whale watching, the best time to visit is during the winter months. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters from December to April, offering incredible opportunities for sightings.

Surfing and Water Sports

If you’re into surfing or other water sports, the winter months bring larger waves to the North Shore of Oahu , while the summer months offer calmer waters, especially on the south and west shores.

Cultural Events and Festivals

Hawaii hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. For instance, the Aloha Festivals take place in September , celebrating Hawaiian culture and traditions.

Romantic Sunsets

Hawaii’s sunsets are truly magical. The months from April to September generally offer clearer skies and stunning sunset views.

In general, the months of April to June and September to October often strike a balance between pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and potential savings. However, any time of the year can be wonderful for a honeymoon in Hawaii. Remember to book your accommodations and activities well in advance, regardless of the time you choose, to ensure you have a seamless and unforgettable Hawaii honeymoon experience.

About Honeymooning in Hawaii

Hawaii, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is a dreamy destination for honeymooners. As you embark on this romantic journey, here’s what you need to know about immersing yourselves in the local culture, navigating the currency, and savoring the delectable cuisine.

Hawaii’s culture is steeped in the spirit of aloha, a concept that goes beyond a mere greeting. It embodies kindness, respect, and unity. When interacting with locals, a warm “Aloha” and a genuine smile go a long way. Engage in cultural activities like hula dancing, lei-making, and even a luau for an authentic experience. Respect cultural practices, such as removing your shoes before entering someone’s home, and immerse yourselves in the island’s history by visiting museums and historical sites.

The currency in Hawaii is the United States Dollar (USD). Major credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are readily available. It’s advisable to inform your bank about your travel plans to prevent any issues with using your cards. Tipping is customary; gratuity of 15-20% is expected at restaurants, and it’s a thoughtful gesture to tip service staff, such as housekeeping and tour guides.

Hawaiian cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavors influenced by its diverse population. Don’t miss the opportunity to savor traditional dishes like “poke” (raw fish salad), “kalua pig” (roast pork), and “poi” (taro root paste). For a taste of local life, explore farmers’ markets for fresh tropical fruits and unique treats. Indulge in a shave ice to cool off or try malasadas, a Hawaiian take on Portuguese doughnuts. Seafood lovers will be in paradise, with an array of freshly caught fish and seafood options.

Weather in Hawaii

Hawaii enjoys a mild and pleasant tropical climate year-round, making it an appealing destination for travelers seeking sunshine and warmth. However, the weather can vary depending on the specific island you’re visiting and the time of year. Here’s a general overview of the weather in Hawaii:

Temperature

Hawaii’s temperatures typically range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C) during the day, and slightly cooler temperatures at night. Coastal areas tend to be warmer, while higher elevations can be cooler.

Hawaii experiences two main seasons: a wet season (winter) and a dry season (summer). The wet season occurs from November to March, with increased rainfall and occasional showers. The dry season lasts from April to October, characterized by drier and more stable weather.

Trade Winds

The trade winds play a significant role in Hawaii’s weather. These gentle breezes from the northeast provide a cooling effect and keep the temperatures comfortable, especially along the coasts.

Microclimates

Hawaii’s diverse topography contributes to a variety of microclimates across different parts of each island. For example, the windward (northeastern) sides of the islands tend to be wetter due to prevailing winds and orographic effects, while the leeward (southwestern) sides are often drier and sunnier.

Seasonal Considerations

  • Winter (December to February) : Winter is considered the wetter season in Hawaii, with occasional rain showers and higher chances of storms. The northern shores typically experience larger waves, making it a popular time for surfers.
  • Spring (March to May) : Spring marks the transition to the dry season. The weather becomes more stable, and the islands start to bloom with colorful flora.
  • Summer (June to August) : Summer is the dry season, with warm and sunny weather. This is a popular time for outdoor activities, including snorkeling, hiking, and beach relaxation.
  • Fall (September to November) : Fall continues the dry and warm weather of summer. September can still have summer-like conditions, while November may see the start of increased rainfall.

Remember that Hawaii’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to pack a light rain jacket, comfortable clothing, and plenty of sunscreen. Regardless of the time of year, Hawaii’s beauty and charm shine through, offering an inviting and welcoming atmosphere for your honeymoon or vacation.

Is Hawaii Safe for a Honeymoon?

Yes, Hawaii is generally considered a safe and popular destination for honeymooners. The islands offer a serene and picturesque setting where couples can relax, explore, and create beautiful memories together. Just be aware of certain factors and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Hawaii honeymoon experience:

Hawaii is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, and violent crime rates are relatively low compared to many other destinations. However, like any tourist hotspot, it’s advisable to exercise basic safety precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight in rental cars.

Natural Hazards

While Hawaii is a paradise, it’s also home to some unique natural hazards. Pay attention to warning signs and guidelines related to ocean safety. Be cautious of powerful ocean currents, especially during the winter months when surf is larger. Volcanic activity is monitored, and any potential risks are communicated to visitors.

Hawaii’s marine life is captivating, but some species can pose a risk if not treated with respect. Be cautious of sharp coral, and give marine animals like sea turtles and monk seals plenty of space. Also, be mindful of insects like mosquitoes, especially in certain areas.

Health Concerns

Hawaii doesn’t have any major health risks, but it’s wise to protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and proper clothing. Stay hydrated, particularly if you’re engaging in outdoor activities. Consult with your healthcare provider before traveling to ensure you’re up to date on any recommended vaccinations.

Weather Events

Hawaii can experience occasional weather events, such as heavy rainfall and tropical storms. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and follow any advisories or alerts issued by local authorities.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Familiarize yourselves with the local customs and etiquette, and respect the cultural sensitivities of the islands. Showing respect for the land, people, and traditions of Hawaii will enhance your experience and interactions.

The Ultimate Hawaii Honeymoon Guide [ 2024 ]

Hawaii for a honeymoon is easily one of the best honeymoon destinations within the USA , and the world. Between luxe Maui , adventurous Kauai , remote Lanai, hoppin’ Honolulu, and the volcanic Big Island, you’ll have no shortage of amazing honeymoon locales to choose from in Hawaii – but which island should you go to for a Hawaii honeymoon? Which island is the most honeymoon-worthy of all the Hawaiian islands? And where should you stay and what should you do when you get there? I’ve got you covered!

Here is Jetset Christina’s Ultimate Hawaii Honeymoon Guide !

Let’s start with some Hawaii honeymoon FAQ’s that I get from couples most often when I’m planning Hawaii honeymoons :

moon hawaii travel guide

Table of Contents

Which island in Hawaii is best for a honeymoon?

That totally depends on you, your fiance, and your personal travel styles. Kauai is one of my favorite islands in the world. It reminds me a lot of Bali and is full of adventurous hikes, beaches and waterfalls. Kauai is super tropical, and more remote than resortey. Lanai is a favorite for honeymooners because of it’s ultra -remote feel. If you’re looking to TOTALLY get away from it all together and are seeking a quiet, romantic honeymoon vibe, check out this resort – easily one of the most beautiful honeymoon resorts in the world. Maui , in my opinion, has a little bit of everything – adventure (the Road to Hana, snorkel trips, whale-watching, waterfalls, etc.) but also some of the most luxe resorts in all the islands (I recommend staying in Wailea for a honeymoon ). Honolulu and Oahu are great, but are more happening and hoppin’ than romantic – but sometimes couples like to do a couple nights in Honolulu (I recommend this hotel) before going somewhere more remote and romantic. Also the Big Island is a gorgeous island, and Hawaii’s dryest – but it tends to draw more families than romantics, and everything is more spread out, versus Maui where you have lots of different restaurants, cafes,  beaches, snorkel spots etc. within walking distance. I do love this unreal resort for a great luxury Hawaii honeymoon resort on the Big Island, though.

Where should we stay in Hawaii on our honeymoon?

These are my absolute favorite honeymoon resorts on each Hawaiian island.

Where to stay in Maui for a honeymoon

Luxe Maui is a hawaii honeymooners paradise for its gorgeous coastline, dazzling beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes & rain forests, but also its unassuming, quintessential VACATION feel – the perfect place to relax after a wedding, with five-star resorts, the world-class service, and the fresh island food that will keep you coming back year after year to celebrate your anniversary. (BTW check out all my go-to Maui recommendations to make the most of your honeymoon on the Valley Isle)

Four Seasons Maui

The Four Seasons Maui is one of Hawaii’s most beautiful – and exclusive – resorts and is hands down my choice of where to stay for luxury in Maui. I love this hotel so much that it’s where i’m planning my wedding for next year! We couldn’t think of a more perfect place, and are so excited to have all of our loved ones there with us.

Montage Kapalua

Spa Montage Luxury Infinity Pool

I recently met a couple while at the Four Seasons Hualalai that had stayed there and at Montage Kapalua on their honeymoon and they said Montage’s service was out of this world – due to it being a smaller hotel and them being able to completely spoil the couple on their honeymoon – they said everyone at the hotel knew it was their honeymoon! So cute.

The Andaz is many people’s favorite hotels on Maui! It has a sleek, young, contemporary country-club-like ambiance and stunning oceanfront views, with 4 infinity pools, 2 restaurants, a full-service spa, and 15 acres on Waikapu Beach. It’s a fab choice for a honeymoon on Maui. AND each Andaz room also comes with its own balcony, perfect for watching those unbeatable Maui sunsets.

Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott Maui

With private lanais, a drop-dead-gorgeous infinity pool, and a sleek contemporary feel, the Wailea Beach Resort is one of my favorite picks for hotels in Maui . The rates tend to be decent for Wailea and it’s still one of the most beautiful properties – in a great location. During the day, you can soak up the sun in their beautiful newly-renovated Makani oceanfront pools which feature cabanas and fire pits. You’ll enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sunset mai tais at the Marriott’s new Kapa restaurant and bar ( one of the best happy hour spots in Maui! ) . They also have the Nalu Adventure Pool for families (with the longest resort waterslide in Hawaii).

Check rates for your dates here.

Where to stay in Lanai for a honeymoon

Laid-back Lanai for a honeymoon is a couples’ dream! Just a ferry away from Maui (or a quick hopper flight), it’s an easy island to tack on to a Maui honeymoon. If you’re really looking to get away from it all, this romantic, remote island is the one for you.

The Four Seasons Lanai

A secluded luxury oasis with 5-star restaurants like Nobu and Malibu Farm, and an out-of-this-world breakfast buffet that will keep you full until dinner! This is one of the most exclusive resorts in Hawaii, and is hands down a favorite among honeymooners.

How to book the Four Seasons Lanai and get honeymoon perks for being a Jetset reader!

Where to stay in Kauai for a honeymoon

Kauai is the farthest of the Hawaiian islands, and has managed to stay very ‘Old Hawaii’ with a slow-paced island lifestyle and one-of-a-kind beauty. Nicknamed “The Garden Isle”, Kauai is home to canopies of lush tropical plants and trees that envelop the entire island, while the coastline is marked by emerald-green seacliffs dropping dramatically to white-sand beaches and crystal-clear coral reefs below. Kauai is so mind-blowingly beautiful and idyllic, it’s one of the most visually stunning destinations in the world.

Kauai has two main sides to it, Hanalei (North Shore), and Poipu (South Shore). They are about an hour and a half apart and have very different feels to them. Poipu is known as being the sunnier side of the island, while Princeville & Hanalei on the North Shore are home to some of the most beautiful tropical settings (but depending on the time of year it can get rainy over there!)  Here are my favorites for both locations.

For the celeb treatment – Get a bungalow at The Lodge at Kukui’ula

Located on the sunny side of the island in South Kauai, The Lodge at Kukui’ula is where to feel like a celebrity on Kauai. As a guest at The Lodge at Kukui’ula , you will enjoy private access to all the Club amenities – ocean view cocktails at sunset, gourmet dining with farm fresh ingredients, signature spa treatments, Peacock Bass fishing at the lake, private picnic at the upcountry farm, a round of golf on our award-wining Tom Weiskopf course, or a kayak ride or the spectacular Koke`e hike. Just a short drive away you will find The Shops at Kukui`ula, with great dining, shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries, etc.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

The new 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay may have the most gorgeous setting in all of Hawaii.

The hotel is committed to sustainability and aims to connect guests with the natural world through its design, amenities, and services. The setting of this hotel could not be better – located on a crystal-clear bay perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing, and the beach is an ideal spot for sunning. And you have stunning views of the mountains and the bay everywhere you look.

Where to Stay on Oahu for a Honeymoon

In downtown waikiki:, moana surfrider.

Located right in the heart of the downtown strip of beach in Honolulu – the famous & beautiful Waikiki Beach. Built as the first hotel in Waikiki, it is within walking distance of everything, making it a great spot to spend a few days in Oahu.

Outside of downtown:

Turtle bay resort.

You may recognize this resort as the setting of Forgetting Sarah Marshall! is where the “7-Mile Miracle” of world-class surf begins, and the lineup is endless. With this as your home base, you can explore North Shore’s shrimp trucks, pristine beaches, and plantation-style towns.

Ke Iki Beach Bungalows

I absolutely loved getting away to North Shore Oahu and the sleepy, adorable town of Haleiwa and all of the beautiful beaches up there. Ke Iki has awesome oceanfront bungalows, where you can enjoy romantic sunsets on an acre and a half of palm-fringed beachfront land, and one of the least crowded beaches around! All beachfront bungalows has bean fully remodeled in 2020 and have beautiful ocean and sunset views.

Kahala Resort

Although this is an older resort and the pool needs a little bit of a remodel, the location and classic Hawaii vibe is hard to beat! As soon as we got to check in, I felt relaxed. I loved the rooms and their GORGEOUS view of Honolulu’s stunning ocean. If you’re looking to be near Waikiki but not in the heart of downtown, this is a great base for a honeymoon.

What is the best time of the year for a Hawaii romantic vacation?

In our opinion, the best time to go to Hawaii is during the shoulder seasons, specifically April or May and September or October . Not only is the weather still nice, but there are also fewer crowds and therefore cheaper prices for flights and accommodation.

However, we understand that you may need to work around school schedules or the holiday travel season. These are still good times to visit Hawaii, although you might have to deal with more tourists or more expensive prices. For a detailed explanation of when to go to Hawaii, check out this article on the Best Time to Visit .

What Hawaiian island is the best for a honeymoon?

This is a tough question, as everyone has their thoughts on what the most romantic island is. Even as Hawaii experts, we also go back and forth between which island is the best for a honeymoon !

However, it always comes down to Maui or Kauai . Maui is larger and more developed in terms of tourism, so there are nicer resorts and a lot more activities available. But Kauai is incredibly beautiful and peaceful and the better choice if you’re into outdoor adventure and going out with the best local Kauai hiking ever .

But everyone is different, so we recommend finding the best island that suits your interests. We even put together a video to help explain which one to pick for your honeymoon .

Should you island hop?

Island-hopping is a great option if you want to see a lot of Hawaii. But we don’t recommend cramming in different islands if you only have a week or less. Even though the distances are short, traveling does take up time, and you don’t want to spend your entire day waiting at the airport, flying, getting a rental car, etc.

So if you have more than seven days, then feel free to choose another island to visit. Otherwise, just stick to one place, so you have enough time to explore and relax at the resort.

How much does a Hawaii romantic vacation cost?

The exact cost of your Hawaii honeymoon will depend on many factors, including when you travel, the island you choose to visit, and the type of resort you book. But on average, a 10-day trip for two people will likely set you back around $8,000.

Hawaii Honeymoon Things to Do - Cost for honeymoon

Luckily, many of our Hawaii honeymoon things to do are free or low-cost activities.

Hawaii Honeymoon Things to Do

When it comes to memorable activities, Hawaii has a seemingly endless number of things you can do with your sweetheart. Many of these activities can be found in our Hawaii Itineraries . From fine dining recommendations to romantic beaches and resorts, these guides can help you plan an unforgettable getaway for your honeymoon!

1. Take a Hawaii Honeymoon Hike

Although it may be tempting to spend your entire vacation lounging on the beach, there are some excellent hikes in Hawaii that you shouldn’t miss.

Here are a couple of world-renown hikes we can recommend:

  • ‘Iao Needle Lookout Trail: This easy but steep trek only takes 15 minutes, but the rewarding views of the lush valley and surrounding Iao Needle are breathtaking!
  • Waihe’e Ridge Trail: If you have more time, the moderate 5.5-mile-long hike on the Waihee Ridge Trail allows you to see Molokai and Lani from the top!
  • Lanikai Pillbox: This is one of Oahu’s most picturesque hikes. It’s of moderate difficulty and only takes 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Ehukai Pillbox : If you’re on the North Shore, the Ehukai Pillbox is a moderate hike (30 minutes up, 30 minutes down) that has a beautiful vista over Pupukea!
  • Kohala Private Waterfall Hike : This hike has it all – scenic coastlines, rugged valleys, and a swim in the pools of the privately owned Kohala Waterfall!
  • Mauna Kea Volcano: Hiking Hawaii’s tallest volcano is a bucket-list experience. The summit trail is long and challenging (8 to 9 hours), but it’s a nice outing for experienced trekkers.
  • Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail: A scenic 2-mile (one-way) hike with ocean views along the southern coast of Kauai.
  • Waimea Canyon: There are so many great trails in Waimea Canyon State Park! You won’t be disappointed with any of them. You can hire a local Kauai hiking guide to take you out if you want to learn more about the area.
  • Okolehao Trail: This 2.5-mile out-and-back trail has pristine views over Hanalei and the North Shore of Kauai!

hawaii honeymoon things to do hiking

Check out our video below ( or the corresponding article ) of great things to do in Poipu to see the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail.

2. Swim with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles

Seeing a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is easier than you may think! But keep in mind that they are federally protected, so if you see one, stay back 10 feet and do not touch them.

Here are some places where you can spot these majestic creatures:

  • Maui: Honolua Bay in West Maui and Ulua Beach in South Maui ( and more! )
  • Oahu: Three Tables on Oahu’s North Shore
  • Kauai: Tunnels Beach or Poipu Beach
  • Big Island: Anaehoomalu Bay

3. Enjoy the Waterfall Swimming Holes

Few things are as romantic as swimming in the sparkling pool of a waterfall with your significant other. Thankfully, there are so many great waterfall swimming holes on all the islands!

  • Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside: This 5-acre area in the rainforest can be accessed via the Road the Hana .
  • Ha’ena State Park: Head to Kauai’s North Shore, and you’ll find a small swimming area at the park entrance!
  • Limahuli Botanical Gardens: After visiting the terraced gardens, you can head to the little creek at the bridge right after the gardens for a quick impromptu swim!
  • Kulaniapia Falls : Get a day pass for full access to this 120-foot private waterfall and enjoy a fun day of swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding.

Kulaniapia Falls is the safest option for swimming, but we’ve also put together a list of a few other amazing waterfalls on the Big Island.

  • Waimea Valley : A short stroll through a tropical botanical garden takes you to Waimea Falls. This waterfall has a lifeguard, so it’s safe (and scenic) for a romantic swim!

4. Catch the Sunrise on a Volcano

If you’re looking for an activity you can’t do anywhere else in the country, then consider heading up to the top of a volcano for sunrise. You can do this either on Maui or the Big Island.

On Maui, we recommend this guided tour of Haleakala . You’ll be picked up at 3 am and taken to Haleakala National Park, where you’ll enjoy a sunrise with a knowledgeable guide. A huge perk is that they secure the reservation for you, so you won’t have to fight for a spot online through the reservation system.

If you’re on the Big Island, then you can head to Mauna Kea for sunrise. There aren’t many guided tours, so it’s better suited for those who don’t mind driving themselves (keep in mind that a 4×4 is required).

If getting up at the crack of dawn is too early for you, then you can consider a Haleakala sunset or an evening stargazing experience at Mauna Kea or along the Kohala Coast .

Hawaii Honeymoon Things to Do - Haleakala sunrise

5. Visit a Coffee or Chocolate Farm

This is the best option for foodies! The Big Island is known for its coffee and chocolate farms. During your tour, you’ll get to see the inner workings of the farm and sample the treats for yourselves!

While most of the farms are on the Big Island, there are some smaller, lesser-known options on the other islands. We can recommend the following:

  • Kauai: Kauai Coffee Plantation
  • Maui: Kuia Estate Chocolate Tasting and Farm
  • Oahu: 21 Degrees Estate Cacao Farm

6. Book a Private Chef

Hiring a private chef to whip up a gourmet meal is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. This is a fully tailored experience that will leave a lasting impression on your honeymoon, anniversary, or romantic occasion!

Chef Daniel of Elite Maui Chefs can create a private dining experience for you and your sweetie. If you’re honeymooning on Oahu or Kauai, then we recommend Chef Amanda Smith (808-639-1578) to concoct a healthy, locally sourced meal for your special night.

7. Visit a Secluded Hawaii Beach

Hitting the beach is an obvious activity for anyone traveling to Hawaii. But we believe that the best beaches are the ones that are more secluded and off the beaten path. And while you may not be able to avoid the crowds completely, these lesser-frequented beaches are still worth visiting for a romantic, laid-back atmosphere.

  • Maui: Hamoa Beach and Makena Cove
  • Oahu: Waimanalo Beach
  • Kauai: Paliku Beach (Donkey Beach). Although public nudity is illegal, there is a small part of the beach where you’ll find naked sunbathers.
  • Big Island: Beach 49. This beautiful black sand beach is in a gated community with limited parking, so plan to arrive early (around 9 am) if you want a spot.

8. Enjoy a Romantic Hawaii Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise is a quintessential honeymoon activity – and for a good reason! With the warm breeze, the breathtaking views, and your honey by your side, it’s hard to think of a more romantic evening activity.

While there are many different tour options, we suggest a small catamaran compared to the larger, more touristy boats. If you want to make a night out of it, you can also choose a boat with cocktails, pupus (appetizers), or a full-on dinner.

  • Sea Maui: You can book a cocktail cruise or dinner cruise that leaves from Kaanapali Beach
  • Kai Kananai : Music, food, and drinks departing from the south of Wailea
  • Catamaran Waikiki Sunset : An affordable option that departs directly from Waikiki Beach
  • Ko Olina Sunset Sail : Romantic trip aboard a 53-foot catamaran with cocktails and pupus
  • Hawaii Waikiki Catamaran : 2-hour cultural and educational tour from Waikiki with dinner, refreshments, music, and ceremonial chants. This activity beats a luau in our opinion.
  • Napali Coast Dinner: Includes drinks, appetizers, and a stir-fry dinner on a 65-foot catamaran
  • Napali Coast Sail : a 4.5-hour trip with drinks and dinner. The boat is larger and can accommodate 42 people, but it’s still a great option to see the coastline!
  • Waikoloa Sunset Sail : Departs from A-Bay and includes snacks and two drink coupons
  • Dinner Cruise to Kealekakua Bay : Even though it’s a big group, this is a fun dinner and history cruise with live entertainment!

9. Escape on a Snorkel Tour

From colorful corals to vibrant marine life, snorkeling is one of the best activities to do in Hawaii. Here are a couple of our favorite snorkel tours for couples.

  • Redline Rafting to Molokini : Visit the beautiful Molokini Crater on this 2-hour power raft snorkel tour.
  • Hawaiian Sailing Canoe : Explore hard-to-reach destinations on this leisurely sail from Polo Beach.
  • Dolphin Excursions : This is your chance to see dolphins, turtles, and other tropical marine life! Plus you’ll save 10% with our promo code!.
  • Oahu Adventure Tour : Private tours where you can choose your activities (snorkeling, hiking, paddleboarding, etc.)

  • Catamaran Sail with Captain Cook Snorkeling : Enjoy 1 hour of snorkeling and a 45-minute sail down the Kona Coast. Find more Captain Cook snorkeling tours here .
  • Power Raft to Kealakekua : Take a high-speed Zodiac raft through Kealakekua Bay and beat the crown on this 4-hour snorkeling adventure.

10. Enjoy the Sunset on the Beach

Hawaii is known to have some of the best sunsets in the country. If you want to see the colorful backdrop of oranges, pinks, and yellows, make your way to one of these spots for sunset.

  • Maui: Makena Cove
  • Oahu: Magic Island Beach (or anywhere away from the crowds of Waikiki)
  • Kauai: Lawai Beach (book the Beach House Restaurant for dinner and enjoy the sunset view from your table!)
  • Big Island: Kikaua Point Park

11. Do Something Authentically Hawaiian

Hawaii has a rich and thriving culture that dates back centuries, although it can be hard to see it past all the high-end resorts and tourist attractions. But if you want to learn more about the history and culture of the islands to have an authentic Hawaiian vacation , there are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, try to eat locally when you can. From food trucks to family-run poke shops, eating your way through Hawaii is a good way to support businesses and get a taste of local flavors.

You can also attend live musical performances. There are lots of restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues where you can listen to ukulele or slack key guitar. If you’re lucky, you might also catch a street performer in the city playing some tunes!

  • Maui: There are so many to choose from !
  • Oahu: House Without a Key at the Halekulani Hotel
  • Kauai: The Beach House
  • Big Island: Browns Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid

15. Get Off the Beaten Path with a Farm Tour

The Big Island may be known for coffee and chocolate, but there are so many other types of farms that you can visit in Hawaii. Not only are these fun cultural activities (you get to see how things are produced on the island), but they are also great ways to support local families and businesses.

  • O’o Farms : A sustainable operation in Upcountry with two tour options: a Coffee and Brunch Tour or a Farm-to-Table Lunch Tour (it’s BYOB!)
  • As we mentioned earlier, the Big Island is a coffee lovers paradise . However, there are some other excellent farm tours (like a vanillerie, goat cheese farm, and sea salt producer) to check out as well.
  • Common Ground Kauai : Take a tour of their regenerative forest before settling down for a delicious farm-to-table experience.
  • 21 Degree Estates : This family-run cacao farm produces chocolate and raw tropical honey! Take the tour and pick up a few souvenirs to take back to the mainland.

17. Spend the Day Wine Tasting

Hawaiian wines may not be as famous as other parts of the world, but the volcanic soil and tropical climate make it a great region for producing some unique varietals. Although there are several wineries on the islands, most production facilities are not open to the public. However, you can always make a reservation in the tasting room to have a glass or sample a wine flight.

  • MauiWine : You absolutely have to try the pineapple wines at this tasting room in Upcountry Maui! They also have reds, whites, roses, and bubbly.
  • Mana + Pua : Make a reservation at this winery on the North Shore. Be sure to come hungry because they have a great menu for breakfast treats, sandwiches, and flatbreads.
  • Volcano Winery : Located on the summit of the Kilauea Volcano, this is one of the few wineries that you can tour! See their vineyard and production room before enjoying some sips in the tasting room.

18. Take Surf Lessons

For adventurous couples, there’s no better place to learn how to surf than in Hawaii. Being in the warm tropical waters surrounded by volcanos and beaches is guaranteed to be a romantic experience.

  • Maui Surfer Girls : This all-female-led surf school (don’t worry, they teach everyone!) offers private, semi-private, and group lessons from Ukumehame Beach Park.
  • Kauai Surf School : If it’s your first time on a board, then Kauai Surf School can help you tackle the gentle waves of Poipu Beach.
  • Surfing at Kahalu’u Beach : Hawaii’s only native-led surf school offers private and group lessons with American Red Cross-trained lifeguard surf instructors.
  • Ohana Surf Project: With a prime location right in Waikiki, this school has lessons for all skill types – private, semi-private, and group.

  • Maui Disaster Response and Recovery Support
  • Malama Hawaii
  • HandsOnMaui
  • Upcountry Strong
  • Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site
  • Keau’ohana Rainforest Restoration

We have more volunteer options for all of Hawaii as well as Maui specifically .

So, if whale watching is a priority for your honeymoon, make sure to visit Maui in winter or early spring!

Can I Fly to Hawaii While Pregnant?

Yes, you can fly while you are pregnant ! However, there are some restrictions. Each airline will have its own rules, so be sure to check before purchasing your tickets.

The best time to go on a babymoon would be during your second trimester. You aren’t too big, you are feeling much better after the sickness and tiredness of the first trimester, and you have energy again.

Where to Eat on Your Hawaii Babymoon

While there is a never-ending list of things to avoid eating or what to eat while pregnant, ultimately, it is your decision and your doctor’s, of course.

Hawaii is known for its seafood, and if that is on your list of not to eat, don’t worry, you will still find plenty of food to enjoy!

How to Plan a Hawaii Babymoon featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Loco Moco plate lunch in Hawaii

Skip the poke and try some cooked local foods instead!

Try out Hawaii’s famous Loco Moco , a local classic with rice, hamburger, and eggs drizzled with mouth-watering brown gravy. You will get your fill of protein and stay away from seafood while still trying out some of the best Hawaiian food out there.

If you are still sick of certain foods, you can find the best smoothies here in Hawaii. They are all fresh fruits and will give you and your baby high nutrients and energy during your stay. You can also find some of the best shave ice as well to try out!

Don’t worry about finding good food that is still on your list. Hawaii has food from all over the world! You can find Mexican food trucks, Chinese restaurants, Thai food, of course, your traditional burger and fries, and let’s not forget some Hawaiian food .

No matter your restrictions, you won’t have to worry about finding food for yourself, as Hawaii has it all everywhere you go on all of the Hawaiian islands.

Hawaii Babymoon: Pregnant-Friendly Things to Do in Hawaii

Here are some of the best pregnant-friendly things to do in Hawaii. You don’t want to do lots of adventure-seeking stuff while on the island.

Think of it as more of a romantic, relaxing getaway, just like your honeymoon .

For the best babymoon Hawaii has to offer, here are some of the top pregnant-friendly things to do on all the Hawaiian islands.

Relax on the Beach

Instead of going on lots of hikes and tourist adventures, try to relax as much as possible. Visit lots of beautiful beaches over the island and spend time in the warm ocean.

Being in the water is great for you and your baby. As mentioned earlier, do not leave the island without getting a prenatal massage!

You might like Waikiki Beach, Kailua Beach (babymoon Oahu), Kaanapali Beach, Wailea Beach, Hulopoe Bay (Maui Babymoon), Hanalei Bay (Kauai babymoon), and many others.

Waimea Canyon

For a babymoon, Kauai has a beautiful canyon to enjoy. It is typically known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and is a drive-up hike. Waimea Canyon is another gorgeous place to visit while on your babymoon.

Waimea Canyon is one of the best free things to do on Kauai and has awesome Kauai hikes and views

You can literally drive up the entire hike and see the scenery along the way. At the very top, you can get out and see the drop-offs and get some incredible pictures.

For a babymoon in Maui, you can see a gorgeous sunset on Haleakala . Drive up and see a view you don’t want to miss out on.

Because it is really high up, it does get colder, so if you are going to get out of your car to take pictures, wear warmer clothes.

Drive-Up Hikes

While you may not enjoy hiking while you are pregnant, you can still go sightseeing at some amazing locations! On many of the islands of Hawaii, you will find some drive-up hikes with incredible views.

Go Shopping

Another fun Hawaii babymoon activity is to go shopping for your little one!

You’ll find lots of boutiques on all the islands with locally made onesies, toys , blankets, books , and so many items that will melt your heart!

Hawaii baby blanket by Coco Moon

Right now, I’m pretty obsessed with Coco Moon . This Hawaii designer makes the softest swaddle blankets and baby clothing, and they have the cutest Hawaii-inspired prints.

You can find Coco Moon items at lots of Hawaii boutiques (like Sand Kids), or you can order online .

Enjoy Shave Ice

One of the tastiest treats to enjoy while pregnant in Hawaii is shave ice.

It’s finely shaved ice that’s packed tightly and drizzled with fruit-flavored syrups. It’s sometimes topped with condensed milk or has a scoop of ice cream in the bottom.

You’ll see shave ice spots all over the islands, but they are not all the same. The trendier ones offer organic syrups made from fresh fruit, and they are incredible!

Sunset Cruises

I think these sunset dinner cruises are absolutely romantic and should be included on your babymoon Hawaii itinerary, no matter the island you visit.

Most offer dinner and drinks, while other boat tours will set sail while you take in the stunning views of the sunset on the Pacific Ocean.

This is one of the best things to do for a Honolulu babymoon!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

While you may not want to get out and explore much of this park, you can definitely do a drive-through tour to see a volcano on Hawaii!

Check out my tips for visiting the Volcanoes National Park.

Go Snorkeling

If you are up for it, try snorkeling!

Whether you snorkel Hanauma Bay on Oahu or one of the many places to snorkel on Maui or even on Kauai , you will find snorkel locations all over the islands.

Molokini Crater is another top snorkeling place you might want to consider!

Maternity Photo Session in Hawaii

Your babymoon is a wonderful time to get some photos with you and your spouse before your little baby arrives! Hawaii, wherever you go, will be the perfect background for your pictures! Check out the latest prices and more details.

Get some well-deserved pictures of your bump and your spouse on the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.

There are lots of talented photographers all over Hawaii who will capture amazing maternity photos. While I’ve used several photographers in Hawaii, I really like using Flytographer .

It’s a concierge photography company that has photographers all over the world, including Hawaii. It’s super easy to find a photographer you like and arrange all your photoshoot details online. Plus, they are pretty affordable.

Save $25 on your first Flytographer photoshoot

What to Pack for a Hawaii Babymoon

Hawaii is a tropical destination, and you’ll want clothing that breathes well, especially when you are pregnant.

I’d recommend bringing some cute maternity maxi dresses for romantic date nights or luau experiences. And don’t forget a maternity swimsuit and cover-up for lounging at the pool or relaxing at the beach.

A few more essentials are reef-safe sunscreen , sunglasses , a wide-brimmed sun hat , flip flops , and sunscreen lip balm .
