Troy Andrews also known by the stage name Trombone Shorty, is a trombone and trumpet player from New Orleans, Louisiana who has been active as a musician since 2005.

From a very young age, Troy Andrews has experienced very good fate when it comes to his musicianship. He was a member of the Stooges Brass Band during his teenage years before being chosen as a member of Lenny Kravitz's horn section. This opportunity took the musician around the world, sharing bills with incredible artists such as Aerosmith. Whilst in the summer of 2006, Andrews went to London and began working with producer Bob Ezrin and U2 at Abbey Road Studios. Due to these connections, Andrews was invited to perform with U2 and Green Day during the re-opening of the New Orleans Superdome.

In 2007 he appeared on the album 'Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino' and that year Offbeat named Andrews their Performer of the Year. After accumulating a number of successes whilst releasing his own solo material, Troy then released 'Backatown' in 2010 and it debuted atop the US Contemporary Jazz Chart and held the position for nine consecutive weeks. He toured extensively worldwide with Orleans Avenue after the release and appeared on prolific US shows including Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The next album 'For True' featured appearances from tour mates and associated musicians from over the years including Rebirth Brass Band, Jeff Beck, Warren Haynes and a return from Lenny Kravitz. His latest album 'Say That to Say This' was released in 2013 on the Verve Forecast Records label.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue are a fantastic jazz and funk band from New Orleans, they incorporate elaborately-long rock-inspired riffs, the odd hip-hop beat and funky guitar strumming into the mix, but the star attraction is the trombone and the trumpet and rightly so. Trombone Short or Troy Andrews has been playing the trombone since he was six The bassist exuded an uncontainable amount of confidence, like it was child’s play to be hitting all those notes in that particular order. But it wasn’t child’s play, it looked difficult and sounded brilliant. And it was the same with the drummer and guitarist, they were all brilliant, playing complex rhythms and absolutely loving it, the drummer in particular didn’t lose his smile for the entire set, he was sourcing his energy from Trombone Shorty in the middle, as was I.

There was a really intense moment when Troy held a single note for an insane amount of time. Minutes. Literally minutes. Three minutes, four minutes he was holding this note for, something called circular breathing, he must have been breathing in through his nose because he kept puffing his cheeks out like in a cartoon and no one has that much breath, the audience went from being impressed to outright flabbergasted, it was remarkable. It was a lively, enjoyable and danceable occasion, and I’ll take every opportunity to catch them again.

Long time gig goer, first time reviewer. Trombone and his band put on an incredible show at The Forum. Balcony was packed when we arrived halfway through support act (The Record Company) - who were very good.

Intro saw musucians jamming for a while before Shorty arrived with his instruments in hand. Each song grew and grew, giving each of the talented band an opportunity to showcase their talents including his own. I came hoping for a great experience, and came away with a lot of head shaking in amazement as to how he managed some of his solos. Add in the singing, choreographed dancing, backing singer solo slots and we truly experienced something very special. Booked tickets 5 or 6 months in advance and was worth the wait. Will definitely be seeing them again next time they are back in the UK. Awesome doesn't do it justice

It's rare when an artist and venue bring together people of different ages, races and walks of life to enjoy a great night together. Iron City and it's multifaceted atmosphere, allowed people to have the kind of experience they wanted: you could chill out and sit in the VIP area, stand back a bit and enjoy from the banister area, or dance and yell your face off directly in front of the band down on the floor (our choice). It was hard to believe New Breed was an opening act and Trombone Shorty and his band did not disappoint in the least. What a great talent!!! So accessible and so magnificently gifted at the same time. I went with my 16 year old son and it was great to see there were many other teenagers there. Definitely one of the best concert experiences I've had.

A few moths ago A friend turned me on to Shorty, and I lost my ass to dancing, Shorty is a genuis and we al =l await his future shape-shifting. Charleston loved him. He is so accessibile. Very audience inclusive, , with mininalist lighting, so welcoming. One of the superlative bands in modern music and, Praise God that he is to young with s much more to live. I am a 63-year-old white woman, with "race music: and pop punk in backgroud; still I know when I see funk. I'm in a back brace today, and it was worth every minute of dancing!

The recent show at the Riviera Theater in Chicago was my fifth time seeing Trombone Shorty live and it was easily the best show! Non stop energy. My personal highlights were actually covers, the first was a James Brown cover that was incredible and featured some smooth dance moves by Troy. The second was a cover of a Red Hot Chili Peppers song that brought the house to its feet and featured some fun if not awkward dance moves by Dan Oestreicher, one of the Sax players.

A truly mind-blowing show. So much talent packed onto the stage. The atmosphere was electric! This is the third time I've seen Trombone Shorty perform and he never disappoints. If you get a chance to catch him life, do so. Highlights included the band solos, the band members riffing off of each other and the crazy wild rendition of Give it Away by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with the saxophonist rapping wildly whilst whizzing around the stage.

Absolutely fanfreakintastic show!!! These guys are so talented and put on an awesome performance. The sound is so tight! To know Mr.Shawty's history of where he came from and how he started at 4 years old is such an amazing story! Great musicianship and entertainers!

I seen him in October when he played at Bayfest in Mobile, Alabama and again last night at The Soul Kitchen in Mobile. I will see him the next time he is in my area!!!

Dave Matthews Band Unveil Tour Openers: Trombone Shorty, Neko Case, Cory Wong and More

Dave Matthews Band have unveiled the special guests to be featured at three of the group’s most hotly anticipated 2024 residencies. For its upcoming series at London’s historic Royal Albert Hall, East Troy, Wisc.’s Alpine Valley Music Theatre and Quincy, Wash.’s iconic The Gorge Amphitheatre, the jam ensemble will call on a cadre of high-profile acts, including Trombone Shorty, Neko Case, Cory Wong and many more. Given Matthews’ noted policy on carefully selecting his outfit’s openers, these impressive acts are lent yet another degree of prestige.

On Tuesday, April 2, DMB set off its first European tour since 2019 with a presentation at Amsterdam’s AFAS Live, blazing through a strong start to the 19-show run. This sprint will bring the ensemble to the historic Royal Albert Hall in London on April 24 and 25; for the sold-out pair, the band has tapped rising UK-based singer-songwriter Myles Smith, who has garnered acclaim for his eclectic blend of influences, including folk, pop, Americana and Afroswing.

Following the conclusion of its Euro tour, Dave Matthews Band will dash into its stateside summer tour, plotting 35 performances from May 22 through September 29. One month into this run, the band will touch down in East Troy, Wis. for two nights at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre on June 21 and 22. On night one, Nashville, Tenn. singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt will warm the stage with her expressive and introspective Americana-tinted alt-rock. Enigmatic up-and-comer Michael Maragi will follow on night two, introducing the crowd to the witty, sharply analytical folk-rock originals that lined his debut LP American Romance in February.

At the summer’s end, the band will stage its most exciting headline shows of the year with a three-night return to The Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Wash., carrying on its 28-year tradition from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. To amplify this signature series, the Matthews has selected a diverse and impressive roster of artists. For the residency’s kick-off, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Say She She will take the stage, followed by Cory Wong and Blind Pilot on night two and Neko Case and Maggie Rogers for the series closer.

In a 2023 conversation with Relix , Matthews spoke on the intention that conditions his guest selections. “We did go back to two sets for a little while and that had to do with openers. I enjoy having openers, but quite often, these openers didn’t get to play for many people. Sometimes they were playing for almost no one because people would wait in the parking lot. I still enjoy bringing out bands that I love and I still do it sometimes, but I like to choose my venues, where I know they’re going to get a bigger audience.”

Trombone shorty & orleans avenue – shorty gras tour, with opener: the soul rebels.

Born Troy Andrews, he got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player, though. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, flip on any late-night TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them.

Since 2010, he’s released four chart topping studio albums; toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Starr, and countless more; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards, five times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book.

Meanwhile in New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Voodoo Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon.

IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION:  There is ongoing construction at the Hanover Parking Garage on Hanover Street in Portsmouth that has contributed to  extended wait times  for patrons leaving the garage after an event. To avoid these wait times, patrons are  strongly   encouraged to park at the Foundry Place Garage ( 100 Foundry Place ) , which is about a 5-minute walk from The Historic Theater. The city of Portsmouth is offering The Music Hall ticketholders a  special $3 event flat rate  to park at the Foundry Place Garage. Please bring your  same-day ticket stub  to the Foundry Place Garage office on your  way out to have parking charges reduced to $3, regardless of length of stay.

Trombone Shorty has announced his first-ever Shorty Gras tour, which will launch on February 16, just three days after Mardi Gras.

The tour will bring Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue’s high-energy New Orleans party to the east coast for a special three-week run of performances. They’ll be joined by another New Orleans staple, The Soul Rebels. Tickets go on-sale to the public this Friday at 10AM local time, and an artist pre-sale runs from today to Thursday this week.

Shorty Gras has become a beloved New Orleans tradition since its inaugural year in 2020, a featured event as part of the Krewe de Freret Parade in the lead up to Mardi Gras (the Krewe de Freret Parade is scheduled for February 3, 2024).

Trombone Shorty leads the parade on his own signature float, and concludes with the Shorty Gras ball at Mardi Gras World, featuring a who’s who of musical guests. Previous performers include Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Flo Rida, Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas, Rebirth Brass Band and others. This year, Shorty will bring this distinctly New Orleans Mardi Gras party on the road for the first time.

Trombone Shorty will have performed nearly 75 shows by the time 2023 comes to a close, including a co-headlining bill featuring Ziggy Marley, Mavis Staples, and Robert Randolph that visited major venues and amphitheaters over the summer including The Greek in Los Angeles and two nights at Pier 17 in New York City.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue To Tour With OutKast’s Big Boi In 2024

Modern New Orleans music tastemakers Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have announced a run of 2024 tour dates featuring support from Atlanta hip-hop O.G. Big Boi of OutKast .

The run will begin in June with shows at Cary, NC’s  Koka Booth Amphitheatre (6/11), Bridgeport, CT’s Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater (6/13), Boston, MA’s  Leader Bank Pavilion (6/14), Huber Heights, OH’s Rose Music Center at The Heights (6/18), and Cleveland Heights, OH’s  Cain Park Evans Amphitheater (6/20). The June 2024 run for Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will also include a June 16th show at New York, NY’s  The Rooftop at Pier 17 featuring support from Neal Francis rather than Big Boi.

After parting ways for various other gigs in July and August, Trombone Shorty and Big Boi will reconnect on September 4th for a performance at Los Angeles, CA’s storied  Hollywood Bowl .
