Best Travel Insurance Plans in Singapore Benefits Coverage

Here are 3 simple steps to submit your travel insurance claim, get your supporting documents ready.

Most travel insurers require claims within 30 days. Submit via mail, WhatsApp, their app, or online portal to avoid policy breaches. Keep originals for 6 months in the event the travel insurance provider needs to sight them. Required documents often include personal info, medical reports, ownership proof, trip records, and reports (e.g., police, airline).

Fill in your details and attach your supporting documents in your submission

Log in to your insurer's claims app or portal. Fill in your info, and the necessary details for the claims (email address. policy number, departure date or policy purchase date), upload soft copies of your documents and submit. Alternatively, mail hard copies of your original documents.

Receive an acknowledgement email and await for settlement

After submitting, you'll receive an acknowledgment email. Your claim will be reviewed. For COVID-19-related claims, contact the provided hotline or email. Upon approval, your insurer will coordinate payments, often offering cashless reimbursement through PayNow or iBanking for speed and convenience.

Are Travel Aggregators Secure? Harder to Claim From?

Travel aggregators let you easily compare flights, hotels, travel insurance and more. But are they secure? Difficult to claim from? We answer your questions.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cancelled Flights?

Not always! While all travel insurance policies have a "Trip Cancellation" benefit, you can only claim for this if it's for an insured event, such as a serious illness or accident, or unforeseen events such as riots or natural disasters. However, different insurers exclude different scenarios, so it's best to read the policy wording carefully. The following are types of flight cancellations that are NOT covered by travel insurance.

Flight Cancellation Due to Known Event

Flight cancellations due to events which are already made known as public knowledge are not covered by travel insurance, as you are expected to have known about these at the point of buying your tickets. However, if you bought your flights and activated your travel insurance before they became public knowledge, you might still be able to make a claim.

Flight Cancellation with Refund / Replacement

If your flight was cancelled but you were put on a replacement flight, or your fare was refunded, you will not be able to make a travel insurance claim under the trip cancellation benefit. In general, travel insurance is only for unrecoverable costs. However, you may claim for trip delay benefits, such as an extra night's accommodation or extra meals.

You Cancelled Your Own Flight / Trip

Travel insurance typically covers insured events that are beyond your control. If you are the one who changed your mind about your trip, you generally won't be able to claim anything - unless your insurer offers a "Cancellation for Any Reason" benefit. However, in public health emergencies like the COVID-19 outbreak, airlines usually waive the usual penalties for flight cancellations, out of goodwill.

How Do I Choose The Best Travel Insurance?

When choosing travel insurance plans for your holiday or business trips, there are several factors to consider, depending on your priorities. Here are four simple steps to pick a suitable travel insurance plan.

Check general coverage

Instead of deciding solely by price, you should compare the benefits and reimbursement limits for common claims like medical expenses, trip cancellations, flight delays and baggage theft and/or damage.

Compare policy premiums

How much your travel insurance costs depends on your destination and length of stay. Most travel insurance companies have 2 to 3 tiers of plans at different price points, with varying comprehensiveness and reimbursement limits.

Special activities coverage

The breadth of coverage needed largely depends on your itinerary. For instance, if you’re planning to go skydiving, make sure you get a policy that covers aerial sports like MSIG’s TravelEasy® Standard, Elite and Premier plans. Or if you’re going golfing overseas, pick a policy that insures your equipment.

Consider the trip duration

This is one of the important determining factors of which kind of travel insurance you get. Single trip travel insurance plans are usually for short trips. If you’re the kind who travels far and for months, it might be worthwhile to consider buying annual travel insurance.

Unlike single trip travel insurance, annual travel insurance often charges a flat premium and insures you for an entire year of travel. It usually costs about $200 to $300 per year, which is more suitable for a frequent traveller who is probably going to travel overseas more than 7 or 8 times a year, at least.

Different Types Of Travel Insurance Coverage

Single trip plans.

If you’re thinking of only taking one or two trips in a year, single-trip travel insurance is probably more suitable for you. As the name suggests, single-trip insurance plans are made for individual travellers, and those who are travelling as families, who need travel coverage for a single trip or holiday, especially for long overseas trips (usually up to 180 days).

It makes more economic sense for those who don't travel very often, plus, single-trip insurance plans can be purchased easily online, with less time in planning and consideration as compared to annual multi-trip plans. But on the flip side, you’ll face the hassle of getting a new travel insurance policy every time you go on an overseas trip. For some, a single-trip insurance plan can get relatively expensive if the trips are short.

Annual Multi-trip plans

Annual travel insurance plans, which are also known as multi-trip travel insurance plans, are designed for those who travel several times in a year. The great thing about this kind of travel insurance is that you only need to do the purchase once, and you’re covered for the next 12 months. It is a good option if you’re a frequent traveller who intends to make many long trips or short weekend getaways abroad in a year.

Individual plans

Going solo as an occasional traveller or frequent traveller means that you’ll most likely need a single-trip individual travel insurance plan or an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan, depending on the frequency of travel.

Family plans

Family travel insurance plans usually cover you and the members of your family who travel with you on your trip, with a maximum number of adults and children to be insured per policy purchased. The people who are insured under a family travel insurance plan may comprise of you and your spouse, and/or your children or grandchildren.

You may want to consider purchasing a family travel insurance plan if you are travelling with your family and thinking of getting a single policy for your family members who are travelling with you, as getting a family travel insurance plan can be more cost-effective than getting separate single trip plans for each family member. What if you and your loved ones are travelling very often as a family? Some travel insurers also offer annual multi-trip travel insurance for families who are frequent travellers.

Single-trip or Annual multi-trip plan - Which one should you pick?

Now that we've detailed out what the different types of travel insurance plans are, it’ll be easier for you to make a decision. If not, here are some examples to help you understand better.

Joshua flies frequently in and out of the country for his business trips. As he works as a legal advisor, his job requires him to travel between Singapore and Thailand twice or once a month. Each trip will last for about a week. In this case, multi-trip travel insurance works best for him as he wouldn't have to keep getting travel insurance before every trip.

Lisa and Amanda are university friends planning to take a long post-graduation trip to Australia. They seldom travel and even if they did, they go on overseas vacations once a year with their own families. For them, the single travel insurance policy is a more suitable choice Australia .

What Do Travel Insurance Plans Cover?

While pricing is a an important factor when comparing travel insurance plans, other features such as overseas medical coverage, trip cancellation coverage and many other related aspects are as important. These benefits and the extent of coverage for each type of benefit usually varies from insurer to insurer. Here are a few aspects you’ll want to look out for when it comes to choosing a suitable travel insurance with adequate coverage .

Overseas medical expenses

In the event you get diagnosed with some sort of unexpected disease, you’ll be able to claim for the necessary and reasonable overseas medical costs incurred within a certain number of days of your trip (usually 90 days) up to the limit as specified according to your selected plan. For some plans there are also tiered coverage limits for different age groups.

In-hospital cash overseas or allowance

Reimbursements for in terms of cash for hospital stays is another benefit that many insurers include in their plans now, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emergency medical evacuation and emergency medical repatriation

This is one of the fundamental aspects of every coverage plan. Any costs incurred for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (including repatriation of mortal remains back to Singapore) that are related to your severe injury/illness diagnosis will be covered.

Keep in mind to have someone on your behalf to contact the insurer’s emergency service to provide your full name, dates of trip, NRIC/FIN number, policy number, name of the place and the telephone number that your insurance provider can reach you, as well as the nature of help required during the emergency, in case you are unable to do so during the emergency.

Trip cancellation/alteration/interruption/delay

Trip cancellations, postponements, delays, and interruptions are often covered if you as the traveller or you relatives travelling with you are diagnosed with a severe illness/get severely injured before the date of departure, subject to terms and conditions.

Pre-existing conditions

This benefit is not commonly included in most travel insurance plans, but currently there are several insurers providing such plans and they include MSIG TravelEasy® Pre-Ex, Income Insurance Enhanced PreX® (formally known as Income) and Etiqa Pre-Ex. The premiums are higher than regular plans, but they provide overseas medical expenses that cover pre-existing conditions.

Travel Insurance Claims

How do travel claims work.

Before you make a claim from your travel insurance provider, there are several important things to take note of, whether it is for claims related to your COVID-19 diagnosis, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, or other reasons. These include knowing what type of plan you purchased, when did the incident/illness occur (pre-trip, during-trip or post-trip), what belongings or items to claim for, and who are involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is travel insurance and how does it help me, what's the difference between single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance.

When you buy travel insurance you can choose from 2 types of policies, either the single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance plan. Single trip travel insurance covers you for a single trip and is usually for individual travellers, or those who are travelling as families, who need travel coverage for a single trip or holiday, especially for long overseas trips (usually up to 180 days).

Annual travel insurance plans, which are also known as multi-trip travel insurance plans, cover you for all trips starting and ending in Singapore, and are designed for those who travel several times in a year, each trip lasting for about less than 180 days. You should consider buying Annual Travel Insurance if you travel frequently (more than 10 times a year). You will enjoy significant savings, and you won't have to worry about purchasing travel insurance every single time as you’ll be covered for the entire year.

most comprehensive travel insurance singapore

PUBLISHED July 18th, 2019 08:00 am | UPDATED November 19th, 2021 05:54 pm

Getting sick abroad can be pretty  expensive . It’s just as bad when you lose a passport, or face extreme travel delays that derails all the hard work you put into planning that perfect birthday vacation for your mom . That’s where travel insurance comes in, but there’s no one-size-fits-all. What if we told you that many people make the mistake of sticking with the same insurer for every single trip?

Whether you’re hopping to a music festival in Hong Kong or scuba diving in Maldives, here’s our pick of the best travel insurance for every type of traveller and trip!

For Frequent Travellers

Allianz travel annual multi-trip travel insurance.

Do you travel as frequently as four or more times a year? You might want to consider getting an annual multi-trip plan for maximum benefits and coverage. For Solo Backpacking

Allianz travel single trip travel insurance (comprehensive bronze).

Travelling alone is tons of fun, and it’s a rite of passage for many people. But it’s also nerve-wracking to be alone when something untoward happens during your backpacking trip. Allianz Travel’s Single Trip Travel Insurance (Comprehensive Bronze) offers you the peace of mind that even if an unfortunate accident occurs, you’ll be well cared for, even if that means you have to be flown home! The plan provides a very generous S$1,000,000 in emergency medical coverage due to sickness or accident, and up to S$15,000 in trip cancellation coverage. It goes without saying that lost baggage, theft, and loss of passport are also covered!

Starts from S$35.10 per trip, get a quote here .

For Adventure Tourism

Etiqa eprotect travel.

While many travel insurance plans cover sporty activities, they typically apply only to select leisurely activities and casual sports. That’s where Etiqa’s eProtect Travel comes in, making sure adrenaline junkies and adventure seekers are always fully covered when travelling. Even the most basic plan provides up to S$50k in case of personal accident, S$200k for overseas medical expenses, and up to S$250 per lost item, because those premium hiking boots don’t come cheap. The list of activities covered included bungee jumping, hiking below 3km from sea level, hot air balloon rides, hand gliding, paragliding, sky diving, and scuba diving.

Starts from S$9.90 per trip, get a quote here .

For Music Festival Junkies

Fwd travel insurance.

You’re all psyched up for your Japan trip to that big music festival to see Radiohead and Billie Eilish. But wait, your flight’s been delayed by six hours, which means you’ll miss a good part of the line-up you paid good money for. It’s bad luck, but the FWD Travel Insurance will cover up to $300 for your flight delay, as well as a max of S$3000 for any theft or damage to your belongings. You might not get back the footage from that camera you lost, but at least there’s some moolah to make up for that. We know how things can get pretty crazy during these events — you know, like dropping a crowd-surfer by mistake — but how about a $500k liability for harm or damage you accidentally cause?

Starts from S$13 per trip, get a quote here .

Best Value Travel Insurance in Singapore

  • Allianz Travel : .

For those people looking for the best combination of price and benefits in travel insurance, we recommend Allianz Travel's Silver plan, Singlife's Travel Plus plan or Income's travel insurance if you need COVID-19 coverage. Their competitive prices coupled with above-average benefits means they provide more value than most other travel insurance policies on the market. For example, while a plan covering a 1-week ASEAN trip has an average cost of S$44, these four plans cost between S$24-S$60 while also having above average trip inconvenience and medical coverage.

Allianz's Silver plan is great for people who prioritise travel inconvenience coverage such as flight delays, cancellation and lost baggage benefits. Allianz also provides coverage for pandemics and endemics, meaning you can get covered for things like cancelling your trip and medical treatment if you or someone related to you contracted COVID-19. Thus, though it is certainly not the cheapest plan on this list, it provides benefits that are most relevant in this climate and is well worth the price.

Out of the four, Singlife has the most flexible coverage and will allow you to get reimbursed for loss of frequent flyer points, motorcycling accidents, and extreme winter/water sports. It also boasts generous medical coverage. While not the cheapest, it becomes especially competitive for MINDEF/MHA customers as they will get an additional 30% off on top of any ongoing promotion.

Income offers above average medical coverage and average coverage for trip inconvenience benefits like trip cancellation, delays and baggage loss. However, Income's value comes from its up to US$100,000 medical expense coverage and US$100,000 evacuation coverage if you were diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip (provided you did not travel to a high risk nation ). Please note coverage will only be in effect if you took the mandatory pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours before your trip. All in all, if you are looking for affordable ASEAN trip coverage with a focus on medical coverage, Income will be a good option.

Allianz Global Assistance - Single Comprehensive Silver

For those people looking for the best combination of price and benefits in travel insurance, we recommend Allianz Travel's Silver plan, Singlife's Travel Plus plan or Income's travel insurance if you need COVID-19 coverage. Their competitive prices coupled with above-average benefits means they provide more value than most other travel insurance policies on the market. For example, while a plan covering a 1-week ASEAN trip has an average cost of S$48, these three plans cost between S$27-S$50 while also having above average trip inconvenience and medical coverage.

Out of the three, Singlife has the most flexible coverage and will allow you to get reimbursed for loss of frequent flyer points, motorcycling accidents, and extreme winter/water sports. It also boasts generous medical coverage. While not the cheapest, it becomes especially competitive for MINDEF/MHA customers as they will get an additional 30% off on top of any ongoing promotion.

Travel Insurance with the Best Coverage & Benefits

  • Allianz Travel: .

If you are relatively insensitive to price and are looking for a travel insurance plan with maximum coverage, we think Allianz’s Platinum Plan, Singlife's Travel Prestige Plan and MSIG's TravelEasy Premier Plan could be great options. Though they can be pricey, they are still priced competitively to other premium travel insurance plans on the market, while providing the leading benefits for travel inconvenience, medical or personal accident claims, respectively.

Allianz Platinum offers the most trip inconvenience coverage, making it ideal for travellers concerned about flight delays or lost baggage. As a point of reference, 60% of travel insurance claims are related to travel inconvenience, meaning this plan will provide valuable coverage. Lastly, it also offers two unique coverages for the current climate-pandemic coverage and cruise coverage. For instance, you may be able to claim for a trip cancellation if you or someone you know contract COVID-19 before your trip. Cruise travellers will also receive some of the best benefits on the market, like a cabin confinement benefit, a missed port of call benefit or a cruise coverage boarding denial benefit.

Singlife Prestige is recommended for travellers who care most about medical benefits, like to personalise their coverage, or who want to have the option to cancel their trip for any reason. Aviva also has a lot less exclusions than the average travel insurance plan, as it lets you purchase optional coverage for a variety of things from extreme sports to weddings.

Both Allianz and Aviva are also good options to consider if you will be going on a cruise, provided your departure port is from Singapore.

Lastly, MSIG TravelEasy Premier can be a great travel plan for families who want a wide variety of coverage without paying extra for it. For instance, MSIG's coverage automatically includes everything from rental car excess coverage to adventurous activities to wedding dress coverage. You will also be covered for pregnancy-related illnesses such as nausea and giddiness, which is a fairly unique feature considering other plans typically only cover pregnancy-related emergencies.

Allianz Global Assistance - Platinum

If you are relatively insensitive to price and are looking for a travel insurance plan with maximum coverage, we think Allianz Travels’s Platinum Plan, Singlife's Travel Prestige Plan and MSIG's TravelEasy Premier Plan could be great options. Though they can be pricey, they are still priced competitively to other premium travel insurance plans on the market, while providing the leading benefits for travel inconvenience, medical or personal accident claims, respectively.

Best Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have pre-existing medical conditions and cost is not an issue, Income's Enhanced PreX travel insurance plans may be a good fit. Despite its 50% deductible if you claim for travel inconvenience (only available for the Prestige and Superior plans), it is currently only one of 3 insurers on the market who offer coverage for pre-existing conditions for you and your family members. Unfortunately, the Enhanced PreX plans can be quite pricey, with premiums for a 1-week ASEAN trip costing S$86 — almost 3x as much as the basic plan average.

Single travellers on a budget may save a bit more with MSIG's PreX Premier plan, which costs around 20% less than Income for a 1-week ASEAN trip. It can also be a good option for the elderly as there is no age limit for purchasing the plan. You can expect up to S$150,000 of medical coverage and S$200,000 of medical evacuation coverage due to your pre-existing condition. However, you should note that you can not buy an annual version of this plan.

MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex

Cheapest Travel Insurance for ASEAN Destinations

  • HL Assurance: Purchase a travel policy and stand a chance to win a flight ticket to a destination of your choice

We found Etiqa and HL Assurance offer the cheapest travel insurance plans for ASEAN travel. Their travel insurance policies only cost about S$22 to S24 for 1-week coverage in ASEAN, which is 30-40% lower than the industry's basic plan average of S$35. However, that's not to say their cheap prices mean modest coverage, as these four options also provide comprehensive benefits.

Etiqa's Tiq travel insurance offers cheap but high value travel insurance plans due to its generous ongoing promotions. It costs 35% less for ASEAN trips than with other insurers with its Basic plan. However, its total trip inconvenience coverage is the lowest of the four, so it may not be the best choice for those who want high coverage for things like flight delays, cancellations and lost baggage. Despite this, it can be a handy plan for budget travellers who want coverage for adventurous activities without having to pay extra.

HL Assurance travel insurance offers all-encompassing coverage for below average prices. It also includes useful benefits like home contents, rental car excess and travel agency insolvency coverage. HL Assurance's trip inconvenience coverage is also one of the highest for the price point, making it a competitive option for travellers looking to protect their belongings and itinerary.

Etiqa

We found Etiqa and HL Assurance offer the cheapest travel insurance plans for ASEAN travel. Their travel insurance policies only cost about S$22 to S24 for a 1 week coverage in ASEAN, 30-40% lower than the industry's basic plan average of S$35.

However, its total trip inconvenience coverage is the lowest of the 4, so it may not be the best choice for who want high coverage for things like flight delays, cancellations and lost baggage.

Its trip inconvenience coverage is also one of the highest for the price point, making it a competitive option for travellers looking to protect their belongings and itinerary.

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Asia Destinations

For trips in Asia (outside of ASEAN) to locations like Taiwan, Korea or Japan, we found thatFWD, HL Assurance and Etiqa generally offered the most competitive prices. Their single trip plans cost only about S$23 to S$27 for a 1-week trip to Asia, compared to the average price of S$45 for all of the basic plans in our sample.

Similar to our discussion for ASEAN trip policies, FWD's Premium plan is a good option to consider if you are planning on going on a cruise around Asia and want cheap but comprehensive trip coverage. It is also good for adventurers and those looking to maximise value for money as there are very little exclusions and above average coverage for trip cancellations, baggage delays and curtailment.

HL Assurance does not have outstanding coverage in one area or another compared to the other four plans, but it does provide solid benefits for a very competitive price. For instance, while it offers below average medical expense coverage, it does offer one of the highest per baggage item loss benefits.

Etiqa's Tiq Travel Insurance will consistently be one of your cheapest travel insurance options, especially if you are purchasing a plan on Fridays. In addition to offering comprehensive coverage for extreme activities like winter sports, Tiq also gives you the option to insure your sports equipment for an extra S$14, making it a good choice for budget adventurous travellers.

FWD

For trips in Asia (outside of ASEAN) to locations like Taiwan, Korea or Japan, we found that FWD, HL Assurance and Etiqa generally offered the most competitive prices. Their single trip plans cost only about S$23 to S$27 for a 1-week trip to Asia, compared to the average price of S$45 for all of the basic plans in our sample.

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Global Destinations

The cheapest travel insurance plans for worldwide travel (i.e. Europe, America, Africa, etc.) are the same as the were for ASEAN and Asia trips: FWD's Premium, HL Assurance Basic, Budget Direct Basic and Etiqa Basic.

FWD and Etiqa are great options because of their combination of affordability and generous benefits. For instance, adventurous travellers will benefit from FWD and Etiqa's Tiq Travel Insurance, which offers low prices but comprehensive coverage for a variety of adventurous activities including skiing and hiking (within limits). 1-week premiums for both single trip plans cost around 40% below average compared to other basic travel insurance plans on the market.

HL Assurance offers some of the highest trip inconvenience (cancellations, trip delays, baggage loss, etc.) coverage for the price point, making it beneficial for travellers going to brand new destinations. It also offers useful benefits like home contents, rental car excess and travel agency insolvency coverage. Despite the plethora of coverage, HLAS travel insurance consistently costs below average.

Budget Direct's Basic Plan tends to be the cheapest travel insurance plan on the market, though its benefits are also the lowest. For example, it costs around 60% below average and offers only S$900 of trip inconvenience (made up of personal belongings coverage) and S$50,000 of medical coverage. Because of its below-average coverage compared to more comprehensive plans, it is a good option for people going to familiar destinations to visit family or friends and only want emergency medical coverage.

BudgetDirect

Best Annual Travel Insurance Plans

Annual travel insurance insures your trips year-round, as long as your destination is within your insurance coverage. Given that 1-week coverage usually costs about S$40 to $70 depending on the region, we recommend getting an annual insurance for people who travel more than 5-6 times per year . Below, you'll find our top picks based on cost and value.

Cheapest Annual Travel Insurance

If you are looking for basic coverage for rock bottom prices, Budget Direct, FWD and Etiqa will be good matches. These plans cost 25-37% below average compared to basic tier annual plans.

FWD can be a good choice for travellers who care about travel inconvenience coverage and sports coverage (for accidents and equipment damage). It costs between S$161-S$214 per year during its ongoing 10% promotion, but if you catch FWD during a higher promotion it can easily become one of the top 3 cheapest plans on the market. Overall, if you are looking for an annual plan that doesn't break the bank and doesn't skimp on coverage, FWD will be the right choice.

While Etiqa's Tiq Entry plan has fairly modest coverage across the board, it is currently one of the cheapest annual plans on the market. While the rock bottom prices can be enticing to budget travellers, is worth pointing out that Etiqa also offers a plethora of valuable benefits. For instance, it offers coverage for adventurous activities and S$1 million of medical evacuation coverage — 30% higher than the basic plan average. Considering that evacuations are some of the most expensive claims, this can be a very valuable benefit for adventurous travellers and the elderly.

Budget Direct's Basic plan will benefit travellers who are looking for some of the cheapest annual plans on the market. Otherwise, travellers may not find much benefit due to Budget Direct's lack of trip cancellation and delay coverage and rather low medical benefits.

This graph shows the cheapest annual travel insurance plans in Singapore

Best Value Annual Travel Insurance

Though Allianz's Travel's Silver plan is one of the pricier insurers for Asia and Global annual trip plans, its unique coverage for COVID-19, cruises and 24/7 emergency services can potentially be worth the extra cost. Furthermore, Allianz Travel's Silver plan really outshines its competitors with its travel inconvenience coverage (coverage for cancellations, trip delays, curtailments, baggage loss, etc.). In fact, its S$30,000 of travel inconvenience coverage is significantly greater than the industry average of S$18,000. However, Allianz is quite restrictive in its exclusions, so you should be sure to read the policy wording before purchasing.

Singlife with Aviva's Travel Plus offers above average coverage for competitive prices and can be a winner for travellers who are looking for flexible medical and trip inconvenience coverage. For instance, its Plus plan also lets you cancel or change your trip dates for any reason, which is a unique feature among travel insurance policies. Additionally, you'll receive coverage for certain childbirth and pregnancy conditions, as well as S$2,000,000 of overseas medical coverage. Lastly, frequent flyers will also benefit from Aviva's frequent flyer points benefit, which lets you recover the points you spent on a trip you have to cancel.

Why Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance will provide financial protection if anything were to happen on your trip. Think about how expensive your trip is and how long it took you to save up for it, especially if you're travelling with your family. Even a 3-day trip can cost several hundred dollars for a family of 3. Furthermore, some portions of your holiday may even be unrefundable like certain flights, hotels or excursions. Travel insurance will cover all the costs of your trip for a fraction of the price in case your flight gets delayed or cancelled, you lose your luggage or if you or your child gets sick and need hospital care.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance

Finding the right travel insurance can be simple if you know what you're looking for. First, you should figure out what kind of plan you need — either a single trip plan or an annual trip. Single trip plans are good if you travel infrequently while annual plans may be the more economical choice if you travel more than five times a year. Annual plans can also help you avoid the hassle of comparing travel insurance plans for every trip. Next, you should also determine your furthest destination to make sure there are no lapses in coverage. For instance, if you will be touring the ASEAN but will also stop in Japan, you should purchase an Asia coverage plan.

You should also take a note of whom you're travelling with, what you'll be doing and how that will impact the amount of coverage you'll require from a travel insurance plan. In general, travel insurance gets more expensive the more people you add to it, although some insurers may offer a slight discount if you are travelling with a group. If you will be travelling with your family, you should find a plan that is not only affordable, but also caters to your family's needs. For example, couples who like to do adventurous activities should find a plan that covers their active itinerary, especially if some of these activities run the risk of injury.

On the other hand, families with small children or elderly relatives should look for a plan offering generous medical and travel inconvenience coverage to cover any emergency expenses and minimise the burden of flight delays or lost luggage. Some plans even offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, which can be an investment worth getting to avoid a claim denial. A plan with good medical coverage, trip delay/cancellation and emergency assistance benefits can help get you through most travel-related emergencies if you're travelling alone.

When you know the basics of your trip and what kind of coverage you require, you'll be able to parse through travel insurance plans a lot easier. An important thing to note is that you shouldn't settle for the cheapest option every time. It may be worth paying extra for more comprehensive coverage if you are going to a brand-new destination or if you have medical issues. On the other hand, getting a cheap plan with simple coverage may be sufficient for a brief trip to a familiar destination.

What to Know If You're Travelling With Pre-Existing Conditions

As you may have seen above, some travel insurance plans will cover pre-existing medical conditions. Typically, these plans cost a lot more than plans that don't cover pre-existing conditions due to the higher risk, but they can be a lifesaver for people who will have difficulty travelling without these conditions being covered.

So what do insurers consider to be a pre-existing condition? It's a chronic injury or sickness that you have been treating in the past 12 months before you buy your travel insurance policy. It can also be an injury or sickness that you have asked to get medical treatment for by your doctor within 12 months of starting your trip or buying insurance. Some examples of pre-existing conditions are:

  • Heart Attack
  • High Blood Pressure

Even with pre-ex plans, some conditions won't be covered. This includes conditions that deteriorated suddenly and became a serious illness. You must also be getting treated for your condition and not refusing or delaying treatment, medication or testing. Lastly, you won't be covered if you had to receive treatment more than once for your condition at an A&E, had to stay in a hospital for more than 3 days in a row or had to stay as an inpatient more than once in the 12 months preceding your trip.

Currently, high-risk countries include Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chile, Colombia, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, French Guiana, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, India, Iraq, Kuwait, Latvia, Liberia, Lithuania, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, the Netherlands, Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Reunion, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Suriname, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, and Zambia.

Please click here for updated information on high-risk countries or visit the Ministry of Health's website for Singapore-specific travel restrictions. It's also important to note that you may not be covered for COVID-19 related claims if you purchase travel insurance for travel to these destinations.

As of July 8, 2021, several countries are experiencing increasing rates of infection and may be risky for travel. Singapore has multiple travel lanes that determine who can enter the country based on the traveller's profile and point of departure; further details on travel lanes can be found here . Upon arrival to Singapore, you may be ordered to serve a mandatory Stay-Home Notice (SHN), depending on your 21 days of travel history and PCR test results (which may be required depending on the risk level of the countries you travelled to).

If you are travelling outside of Singapore, please check with your destination country for their COVID-19 precautionary requirements. It's also important to note that if you are planning a trip and have recently bought a travel insurance policy, you may not be eligible for claims related to COVID-19.

Updates on the COVID-19 pandemic and Singapore's response is rapidly changing. Because of recent COVID-19 spikes worldwide, Singapore has determined only Brunei Darussalam, New Zealand and Mainland China okay for non-essential travel. To stay updated, please click here .

No, travel insurance isn't mandatory. However, it is highly recommended if you will be travelling to new destinations or participating in adventurous activities.

You should buy travel insurance preferably as soon as you book your trip. The latest you can buy a policy is one day before your trip, although some insurers reduce coverage for cancellation benefits three days before your travel date. You can not buy a travel insurance policy after you have left for your trip.

While travel insurance policies generally have similar exclusions, some insurers may cover things that others don't. While we list some of the common exclusions below, you should still read the policy wording of your travel insurance policy to know exactly what is and isn't covered.

Each insurer has their own way of receiving claims. Most insurers have switched over to online submissions where you can upload and submit your claim and all your supporting documents. Some insurers even let you submit smaller claims through their travel apps. You also have the option to mail the documents. Travel insurance claims should be submitted within 30 days of your return. If you are unsure of the documents you need to submit, each insurer should have a claim submission instruction page that lets you know what they need for what type of claim.

Alternatives to Travel Insurance

If you want to purchase travel insurance to cover your trip, but do not want to spend extra on a policy, there are ways of getting free travel insurance coverage. For example, there are travel credit cards that provide free travel insurance coverage to their cardholders. Though some of these cards can get costly, the insurance packages included are quite comprehensive. For more information, we prepared a list with detailed analysis of cards with complimentary travel insurance .

Methodology

By collecting hundreds of data points from all the travel insurance offerings in Singapore, we were able to gain insight on dozens of plans offered by more than 20 insurers. The data we collected benefit coverages from personal accident, medical, emergency repatriation, trip cancellation, lost or damaged baggage, trip/baggage delays to sports coverage. We also collected pricing information for each product by destination country and by duration of coverage (1-week, 2-week and annual). To see all of the companies we analysed, please see the table below.

In order to arrive at our top picks for travel insurance, we looked at multiple factors. First, we considered the amount of money one is entitled to when certain events occur (i.e. medical and trip inconvenience). Then, we created a benefits to cost ratio to measure the value of each product. This measure is a proxy for how much an insured person gets for what he pays. We weighed each benefit area in terms of frequency of claims : travel inconvenience was given a weight of 60% while personal accident and medical benefit was given a weight of 40%.

The graph below illustrates how different companies compare based on the value ratio we utilised. This particular example assumes a 1-week trip within ASEAN region — however, this can vary for other regions and for longer trips, especially if you purchase an annual package.

Good to Know

What are included in the travel insurance with covid-19 coverage.

Travel insurance plans in Singapore focus on comprehensive coverage, including medical expenses due to COVID-19, quarantine allowances, and trip cancellations or disruptions caused by the pandemic. Plans vary in terms of coverage limits, eligibility, and additional benefits like emergency evacuation.

Travelers must compare specifics, such as coverage amounts and exclusions, to find the plan that best suits their needs and travel destinations. For detailed comparisons and specifics on each plan, please refer to the succeeding sections.

How to Choose a Plan With COVID-19 Protection

When traveling amidst ongoing health concerns, securing travel insurance with adequate COVID-19 coverage is paramount. Look for policies that specifically offer protection against pandemic-related eventualities.

Consider this example provided by Mr Wong in a report by Channel News Asia : “For example, airfare costs S$3,000 and accommodation costs S$2,000 but the trip cancellation limit is only S$2,500. Thus only part of the cost is covered,”

To help you choose a plan, here are a few tips:

  • Compare Different Plans: Start by comparing various travel insurance policies to find one that offers the most comprehensive coverage for trip cancellation due to COVID-19.
  • Pandemic-Related Eventualities: Ensure the policy specifically covers pandemic-related situations, including trip cancellation if your plans change because of COVID-19.
  • Medical Bills Coverage: Look for policies that include coverage for medical expenses if you contract COVID-19 while abroad, including hospitalization, treatment, and medical evacuation if necessary.
  • Quarantine Allowances: Evaluate the benefits of coverage for quarantine allowances and trip interruptions caused by the pandemic. Knowing potential quarantine costs are covered can offer significant peace of mind.
  • Ease of Claims: Consider the process for making claims related to COVID-19. Some insurers provide straightforward and hassle-free claim processes, which can be less stressful during a challenging time.
  • Reliability and Customer Support: Pay attention to the insurance provider’s reliability and the level of customer support offered, especially for handling COVID-19-related issues. Good customer support can make a significant difference in your experience.
  • Review COVID-19 Coverage Details: Meticulously review the specifics of the COVID-19 coverage offered by the travel insurance plan to ensure you are adequately protected against the unexpected.

Budgeting Tips for Travel Insurance

When planning a trip, it’s important to factor the cost of travel insurance into your budget. Travel insurance can protect you from unforeseen expenses caused by emergencies, such as trip cancellations, medical issues, or baggage loss. As you compare travel insurance plans, look for comprehensive coverage at a price that suits your financial plan.

Understanding the Costs

When budgeting for travel insurance in Singapore, it’s crucial to understand the factors that influence the cost of a policy. Prices can vary significantly based on the duration of your trip, the destination, coverage level, and your age.

For example, a two-week trip to Europe might cost significantly more to insure than a weekend getaway to a neighboring country due to the increased risk and medical costs in different regions.

  • Destination: High-risk destinations or those with higher medical costs may lead to higher premiums.
  • Duration: Longer trips typically cost more to insure.
  • Age: Older travelers may face higher costs due to increased risk of health issues.
  • Coverage Level: Opting for comprehensive coverage, including COVID-19-related events, will increase the premium.

Policy Options and Pricing

Singaporean travelers have a wide range of policy options to choose from, with premiums adjusted accordingly. For instance:

  • Basic Plans: Starting from as low as S$20 for a week-long trip within Asia, covering essentials like medical expenses and trip cancellation.
  • Comprehensive Plans: Can range from S$50 to over S$100 for the same duration, offering extensive coverage including COVID-19, lost baggage, and travel delays.

Using Price Comparison Tools

Leverage online comparison platforms to compare policies from different insurers. These tools can provide a clear overview of what you’re getting for your money, helping you find the best deal that fits your needs and budget.

  • Benefits: Easily compare the cost and coverage details side by side.
  • Convenience: Simplifies the process of finding a suitable insurance plan.

Discounts and Deals

Keep an eye out for promotions and discounts that insurers frequently offer. Signing up for a policy through a bank, for example, can sometimes yield discounts or additional perks.

  • Credit Card Offers: Some credit cards provide free travel insurance if you book your trip with the card.
  • Early Bird Discounts: Purchasing your insurance well in advance can also save money .

Budget Allocation

As a rule of thumb, allocate 6-7% of your total trip cost to travel insurance, according to NerdWallet . This percentage ensures that you are adequately covered without significantly impacting your overall travel budget. For a S$2,000 trip, for instance, setting aside S$120 to S$140 for travel insurance is a prudent choice.

How to Get the Best Value for Money

When looking for travel insurance in Singapore, your goal should be to balance cost-effective premiums with comprehensive coverage. Begin by itemizing your specific needs based on your travel itinerary. Consider the nature of your trip, destinations, duration, and any unique activities you plan to undertake.

Here are a few tips:

Using Comparison Tools and Calculators

Comparison tools allow you to view a range of travel insurance options side by side. This makes it easier to see which policies offer the best value for the specific coverages you need.

  • Efficiency: Quickly compare multiple plans from various providers.
  • Customization: Filter results based on your specific travel needs and preferences.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Identify which plans offer the most comprehensive coverage at the best price.

Aside from that, many insurance websites also offer calculators that can help you estimate the cost of your travel insurance based on trip details such as destination, length of travel, and the total cost of your trip.

  • Budget Planning: Get a ballpark figure of your insurance costs to aid in budgeting.
  • Coverage Analysis: Some calculators suggest the type and amount of coverage you might need, based on the information you input.

Look for Discounts

  • Early Bird Discounts: Some insurers offer discounts for purchasing your policy early.
  • Group Rates: If traveling with a group, look for policies that offer discounted rates for multiple travelers.
  • Loyalty Programs: Check if the insurer offers discounts for repeat customers.

Read Reviews and Ratings

Customer reviews and ratings can provide insight into the insurer’s customer service and claims process. Websites like Trustpilot, Google Reviews, and the Better Business Bureau are good sources for such reviews.

Understand the Fine Print

Know what is not covered. For example, some policies may not cover adventure sports unless you pay extra. Additionally, you should check how each policy handles pre-existing medical conditions.

Consider the Total Value, Not Just the Price

A cheaper policy might seem attractive, but it’s important to consider what’s covered. A slightly more expensive policy might offer significantly better coverage, which could save you money in the long run if you need to make a claim.

Additionally, Mr Chandramogan , an executive senior financial planner with Great Eastern Singapore, also highlights that the expertise of an agent could simplify the process when you purchase travel insurance, ensuring proper documentation and guidance, highlighting the significance of evaluating overall benefits and support when choosing travel insurance.

“Imagine you are overseas and you are in an accident, I doubt you will be in the right frame of mind to know how to do your own claim,” he said, noting that buying travel insurance policies online can be “slightly cheaper,” Mr. Chandramogan said in an interview with Channel News Asia.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Travel Insurance

When you’re shopping for travel insurance, being informed is key to choosing the right policy. Avoid these common mistakes to ensure you’re properly protected on your travels.

  • Purchasing Too Late: Your travel insurance should be effective from the moment your trip is booked, not just from the departure date.
  • Overlooking the Fine Print: Policies vary, and what travel insurance gets you may differ from your assumptions. Carefully review your policy to know exactly what’s included and the limits of coverage.
  • Assuming Credit Card Coverage is Enough: Check the coverage limits and exclusions of your credit card travel benefits and consider supplemental insurance if necessary.
  • Ignoring Exclusions and Pre-Existing Conditions: Be aware of the policy’s exclusions and buy additional coverage if you have health concerns or plan to engage in higher-risk activities.
  • Choosing Based Solely on Price: Compare benefits and coverage levels to make sure you’re getting the best value for your money, and consider spending a bit more for comprehensive protection.

The travel insurance landscape in Singapore offers a diverse range of options, each tailored to distinct travel needs and budgets. Important factors such as overseas medical coverage, trip cancellation, and protection for personal belongings have been addressed to ensure you make an informed choice.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

As of February 2023, Singapore has eased up on COVID-19-related travel insurance requirements. Visitors are no longer required to obtain travel insurance before entering the country, but the government still highly recommends it.

In case things go wrong, having travel insurance coverage can provide an added layer of security. A comprehensive travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses and assistance, lost or delayed baggage, unexpected trip cancellations and flight delays.

Singapore is known for outdoor adventure activities like kayaking, scuba diving and hiking — and travel insurance can offer peace of mind when you’re exploring the great outdoors. Most plans include emergency medical coverage if you sustain injuries while traveling, and some policies offer protection for sporting gear.

But every traveler is unique and will require different coverage. Whether you’re an adventure aficionado or a business traveler , there’s an insurance plan that’s right for you. Here are the most common travel insurance coverages:

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason coverage , also known as CFAR, allows you to claim reimbursement if you cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your insurance policy. CFAR coverage is advantageous for travelers who might need to cancel their trip for unconventional reasons.

When compared to standard travel insurance, CFAR coverage is more flexible. However, it can be more costly and doesn’t always cover you completely. There are a handful of rules to qualify for coverage, including:

  • You may have to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You need to buy CFAR coverage within a certain number of days after booking your trip.

Gear Theft Protection

Singapore has some of the highest safety rankings in the world . Nevertheless, backing yourself with gear theft protection can still be a wise choice, especially if you’re traveling with valuable personal belongings, travel documents and credit cards.

Travel insurance can help cover you in case your items are lost, damaged or stolen. Although travel insurance policies include predetermined cost limitations and exclusions, coverage is worth considering if you wish to bring the following:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sports equipment (like a kayak)

Note that, due to sub-limits on some policies, your policy may not cover the full value of your items. Review your policy documents, including the product disclosure statement, to ensure you are protected. If not, you may want to consider leaving some of your more valuable items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

If you encounter health complications during your trip, having travel insurance with medical emergencies and evacuation coverage can make a big difference.

In Singapore, the smog and tropical heat may negatively affect some travelers . Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma or skin conditions when booking your trip insurance.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies can cover a variety of scenarios, from viral outbreaks to unforeseen medical treatments. Keep in mind that your U.S. health insurance card may not provide coverage abroad, even if you have a private plan. If things go awry, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you have medical protection with travel insurance.

For medical emergency coverage, a standard travel insurance policy may include:

  • Hospital admission fees
  • Operations and operating room fees
  • Ambulance fees
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Dental costs

Travel insurance companies also usually include coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. In recent years following the pandemic, medical insurance has become a consideration for many American travelers.

Some companies also offer medical coverage for sports and adventure enthusiasts. Overseas medical expenses and treatments can add up, especially if you’re into extreme sports.

Rental Car Protection

Singapore requires car rental companies to have insurance . In most cases, rental car insurance in Singapore covers the vehicle in the event of traffic accidents. Most car rental companies opt for a basic collision damage waiver coverage that comes with limitations. Two important factors to look out for include:

  • Most car rental companies will choose to opt for a higher excess, or what you will have to pay when making a claim.
  • The majority of companies will only cover car use in Singapore.

Check your insurance policy before driving a Singapore rental car into other countries. For example, you may not have coverage if you drive a vehicle from Singapore to places like Hong Kong, Brunei, Cambodia or Malaysia.

If you’re traveling to Singapore and planning to rent a car, you can also purchase travel insurance with rental car coverage for extra protection. Some types of rental car coverage include:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Theft protection
  • Third-party liability
  • Personal accident insurance

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you in the event of unforeseen circumstances while traveling. This type of travel insurance covers cancellations for the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or immediate family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international acts of terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury duty

Trip cancellation insurance is mostly limited to the above reasons. For more flexibility, it’s best to opt for CFAR coverage.

How Much Does Singapore Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, age and desired destination. Whether you’re searching for single-trip plans or annual multi-trip coverage , there are multiple providers to consider. And if you are on a budget, cheap travel insurance options are available.

To receive a quote from a travel insurance provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your home location
  • Age group and the number of travelers
  • Total trip price

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Singapore. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Singapore for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Singapore?

There are a few things to consider before purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore. First, it’s worth seeing if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers any overseas coverage. We also recommend you check to see if your health insurance extends to medical emergencies abroad.

Compare various insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and travel delays. For example, most major airlines offer travel insurance when booking flights, but coverage may not include specific medical emergencies.

Remember, full reimbursement isn’t always guaranteed, so carefully review policy wording and disclaimers. Familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions and consider add-ons to enhance your travel insurance coverage.

Singapore Safety Tips

Singapore is considered one of the safest countries for travel . Whether you are traversing this modern, metropolitan city-state as an experienced traveler or a first-timer, here are some things to take into account:

Crime and Safety

Crime rates are relatively low in Singapore. However, petty crime can still happen in major tourist areas, hotel lobbies, airports and public transportation facilities. Keep an eye out for pickpocketing and theft and, if possible, keep your valuables stored in locked safes when not in use.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

There are plenty of options for travel from Singapore, whether you are planning a day trip to Malaysia or a longer stay in Indonesia or Thailand. If you’re planning an active activity, make sure your travel insurance plan covers medical expenses and emergency assistance.

As of February 2023, the Singapore government has lifted all restrictions regarding COVID-19 .

The country does not require COVID-19 coverage and vaccinations for international air travelers. You also do not need to show a vaccine passport to return to the U.S.

In case of an emergency when traveling in Singapore, call the U.S. Embassy hotline at +(65) 6476-9100.

Is Travel Insurance for a Singapore Vacation Worth It?

Although travel insurance for a Singapore vacation is not mandatory, it comes with many benefits. Standard insurance may cover you for lost baggage , medical emergencies, flight postponements or other travel inconveniences. Or you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, which could include protection for valuable items like cameras and sporting gear.

Travel insurance can also offer peace of mind if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Plus, there are many add-on options to improve your travel insurance coverage — like CFAR or rental car coverage.

Ultimately, it’s up to you if travel insurance is worth it for a vacation to Singapore. We recommend comparing quotes and general information from at least three travel insurance companies before purchasing a policy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in Singapore

Travelers do not receive free health care in Singapore. But medical expenses can add up if you need treatment while abroad. Travel insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses while in Singapore. Or you can check to see if your health care extends to emergency care while traveling.

Can I buy travel insurance after I depart for Singapore?

Sompo Travel Insurance Covid-19 Singapore: Review (2022)

moneysmart

Sompo travel insurance  has gone through some MAJOR changes since we’ve last talked about it. Let’s first recap the basics of Sompo’s travel insurance plans:

Back then, Sompo’s travel insurance plans were known as Sompo Travel Joy insurance plans. They were categorised into 3 tiers: the basic Vital plan, the middle-tier Deluxe plan and the Japan-focused GO Japan! plan. It even had an Elite plan as it’s basically a bumped-up version of the Deluxe. In the past, Sompo travel insurance was one of the most comprehensive and best travel insurance plans for those travelling to Japan.

But let’s get up to speed with the current Sompo travel insurance and compare them against the other travel insurance plans. P.S. There’s nothing special about the plan for Japan anymore.

  • Sompo Travel Insurance: Summary
  • Sompo Covid-19 Travel Insurance Coverage
  • Disadvantages of Sompo Travel Insurance
  • Sompo Travel Insurance Claims
  • Sompo Travel Insurance: Promo Code
  • Sompo Travel Insurance Singapore Review

1. Sompo Travel Insurance: Summary

While most travel insurance plans offer 3 tiers of plans,  Sompo’s travel insurance (with Covid-19 coverage) only has 2 tiers:

  • the Essential  plan and
  • the Superior  plan.

As its name suggests, the Sompo Essential travel insurance plan offers you basic coverage while the Sompo Superior plan offers you more comprehensive coverage. Both plans, by default, come with Covid-19 coverage.

Here is a summary of Sompo travel insurance’s price, benefits and coverage:

Travel insurance plans are priced based on the country that you’re travelling to. Take Sompo travel insurance, for example, whether you decide on the Essential or Superior plans, you’ll find that there are 3 different prices.

Check which countries Sompo Travel Insurance covers here:

  • Area A : Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, Cambodia, China (excluding Tibet and Mongolia), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Laos, Macau, Myanmar, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, and all countries listed under Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide excluding countries in the Country Exclusion List: Afghanistan, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan and Syria

If you and your squeeze are going to elope and travel the world, you’ll obviously need the most comprehensive and expensive Area C worldwide coverage.

No  lah, won’t get Covid while travelling. Jokes on you, because this Singaporean couple dropped their jobs and tried to travel the world but they got Covid-19 while on holiday in Istanbul.

Here’s Sompo travel insurance’s Covid-19 coverage at a glance:

2. Sompo Travel Insurance’s Coverage includes Covid-19

Before you buy something, you should know exactly what you’re buying. When buying travel insurance, you should know what the plan covers you for.

From baseline baggage loss, flight delay, and medical coverage to Covid-19 coverage and outdoor sports coverage, we broke down the Sompo Travel Insurance here:

Sompo’s basic travel insurance coverage

As with all travel insurance plans, Sompo’s travel insurance covers you for:

  • Personal accident
  • Medical expenses (overseas)
  • Flight delay
  • Missed flight connections ($100 for Essential, $200 for Superior)
  • Overbooked flight
  • Baggage delay/ loss
  • Stolen or lost passport

Those are the basic requirements of any travel insurance. Now, moving on to Covid-19 coverage. Sompo has integrated Covid-19 coverage into their travel insurance plans. So, all Sompo travel insurance plans come with Covid-19 coverage. You don’t need to add on any Covid-19 riders.

Sompo’s Covid-19 claims & coverage

Sompo’s Covid-19 coverage is actually pretty decent. It starts covering you before you even depart for your holiday. However, as with all travel insurance, there are lots of secret potholes, hidden terms and conditions, and caveats.

Also, what does a travel insurance’s Covid-19 coverage include? Here, we break down Sompo’s Covid-19 claims and coverage for you:

  • Pre-Trip Cancellation : Coverage starts 30 days before your trip. If you or your travelling partner (must be under Sompo travel insurance) gets Covid-19 and you both decide to cancel the holiday, you can claim from Sompo any transport expenses, accommodation, tour agency, cancellation fees that you’ve already pre-paid for.
  • Pre-Trip Postponement:  Again, coverage starts 30 days before your trip. If you or your travel partner (both under Sompo travel insurance) gets Covid-19 and you both decide to postpone your holiday, you can claim from Sompo any rescheduling admin fees charged by your transport and accommodation providers.
  • Shorten Trip due to Covid-19 : If you’re already travelling and you or your travel partner gets Covid-19 and you need to curtail (means to shorten) your trip, you can claim from Sompo any transport, accommodation, and cancellation fees that you’ve already pre-paid. You can also claim economy transport tickets and hotel you’ve had to make to facilitate your return to Singapore.
  • Flights & Accommodation disrupted due to Covid-19 : Already travelling but you or your travel partner got Covid-19 and stalled your plans? Maybe you had to miss your onward flight to the next country and missed the hotel stay too. You can claim from Sompo the new bookings you’ve had to make.
  • Overseas Covid-19 Medical Expenses : If you got Covid-19 while travelling, took a ride on the local ambulance, admitted into their local hospital for Covid-19 treatment, you can claim 45 days’ worth of medical expenses.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation or Repatriation : If you’re down super serious with Covid-19 and need to be sent back to Singapore for treatment (or body if passed away), all necessary medical evacuation and repatriation transport costs and admin fees will be covered.
  • Overseas Quarantine Allowance : Means if you catch Covid-19 while travelling and the local authorities put you in quarantine, you will get a cash amount everyday you are in quarantine.
  • Overseas Hospital Income : If you get Covid-19 while travelling, you get admitted into the local hospital, you get a cash amount every 24 hours.

However, as with all travel insurance claims, you need to prove to Sompo that you’ve already tried your best and banged tables at your airline, hotel, and travel agency for rescheduling or refunds… but to no avail. Then, you must contact Sompo ASAP and very urgently to let them know about the situation.

Note that there’s also a $100 excess to be paid by you first before Sompo’s coverage kicks in.

3. Sompo Travel Insurance’s Disadvantages

There are several jarring cons to Sompo’s travel insurance that you must know before you buy one.

Frankly, you might want to give Sompo a miss if you’re flying on business class , or using air miles and rewards points such as Agoda points to redeem your hotel stay. You shouldn’t buy Sompo travel insurance if you are setting off on an adrenaline junkie’s adventure-filled trip. Sompo travel insurance’s lack of coverage for outdoor activities is also one of its main drawbacks.

Here, some caveats hidden in Sompo’s travel insurance terms and conditions that you must know:

  • Vaccination:  You must be fully vaccinated according to Singapore’s Covid-19 regulations to be eligible for Sompo’s travel insurance coverage.
  • Waiting period : If you bought Sompo travel insurance today, and get Covid-19 in the next 14 days, you cannot claim(!!).
  • Air Miles/ Credit Card/ Membership Points : If you got your flight or hotel accommodation via any air miles redemption, credit card points, or some sort of hotel membership points redemption, you cannot claim it from Sompo at all.
  • Business Class Tickets/ Hotel Suites : If you only travel  luxury and got yourself Business Class or First Class tickets and deluxe suites, Sompo’s travel insurance cannot reimburse you for your expensive bookings. They can only reimburse you the cheap economy value prices.
  • Specialist Treatments due to Covid-19 : Listen up if you have some health conditions that may be worsened by Covid-19. If you got Covid-19 overseas and you need to have your heart condition, pregnancy, etc. checked out at the same time, you must have a referral letter by the general doctor attending to you in that overseas hospital. Else, you can’t claim those specialised treatments you got overseas even though it’s related to your health and Covid-19.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moneysmart (@moneysmartsg) on May 13, 2022 at 8:00am PST

In terms of outdoor activities, Sompo travel insurance does not cover  activities like scuba diving, car racing (Sepang guys, take note), and professional sports tournaments (sorry Muay Thai and BJJ peeps going to Malaysia or Thailand to compete). If you’re planning to hike the Japan Alps, you won’t be covered.

It’s not explicitly stated in the Sompo terms and conditions  whether activities like skiing, and white water rafting are covered. In the past, the previous Sompo travel insurance was more lenient, stating that some of these sports may be claimable if taken for leisure purposes. However, that clause has since been removed.

If you’re not sure which type of travel insurance you should be buying, here’s a useful guide explaining how to choose travel insurance .

4. Sompo Travel Insurance Claims

According to reviews from Reddit users, Sompo travel insurance’s claims process is smooth and easy. Sompo will take 10 working days to process your claim before they get back to you. If all is done, you will receive your claimed amount via PayNow.

Here are some handy information for your Sompo travel insurance claim:

Emergency hotline: For travel insurance emergencies, call Sompo’s emergency hotline at +65 6532 2522

Online claims: You can submit your Sompo travel insurance claims online via the official Sompo website. Otherwise, you can reach out to [email protected] .

Hard copy claims: Download the claims form and mail with supporting documents to Sompo Insurance Singapore Pte Ltd, 50 Raffles Place, #05-01/06 Singapore Land Tower, Singapore 048623.

App claims: Download the Sompo SG app and submit the supporting documents via the app. You can take photos on the spot or choose from your files. Claims submitted through the app are instantly submitted and enjoy priority assessment.

Things to note: Claims must be reported within 30 days of your return to Singapore. For useful info on supporting documents needed, refer to Sompo’s claims page.

5. Sompo Travel Insurance Promo Code

Comparing across the board of travel insurance plans that offer COVID-19 coverage , Sompo travel insurance is one of the cheapest. At the moment, there are no ongoing Sompo travel insurance promo codes and promotions. However, the premiums that you’ll be paying is pretty budget-friendly and value-for-money.

6. Sompo Travel Insurance Review

The great thing about Sompo’s Covid-19 travel insurance is the flexibility it offers in rescheduling your travel plans when you unfortunately contract Covid-19.

Compensation for trip cancellation or postponement is offered if you, an immediate family member or a travelling companion also insured by Sompo, got diagnosed with Covid-19 before your departure date (within 30 days). If your travel partner gets Covid-19 , you can choose to claim for your travel expenses rather than go home alone.

On top of that, you can make a claim for having to change your itinerary if your travelling companion or an immediate family member back in Singapore gets diagnosed with Covid-19 and you need to cut short your trip to return to Singapore.

However, considering that Sompo’s Covid-19 coverage kicks in 30 days prior from departure date, but there’s a 14 day waiting period before your coverage can be “activated”, you have to buy your Sompo travel insurance 44 days (or 1.5 months) before your trip.

So… is Sompo travel insurance good?

If you’re planning a leisure holiday well ahead of time that mostly involves an itinerary of eating, shopping and sightseeing, Sompo’s Covid-19 travel insurance plan is well worth looking into. It offers comprehensive Covid-19 coverage on top of the regular policy benefits at wallet-friendly prices.

Given that the price difference does not vary much between the Essential and Superior plans, top up a little extra for the Superior plan to enjoy twice as much coverage.

However, the medical coverage offered by Sompo does pale in comparison to other travel insurance plans in the market. If you’re healthy, vaccinated, and your chances of hospitalisation are close to none due to Covid-19, the Sompo travel insurance is definitely one to consider.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Singapore

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Pros and Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it can be considered a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical cover and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind. However, whether Tick Travel Insurance Top Policy will be suitable for you, will likely come down to whether cover levels across other areas of need will be high enough.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

Existing customers and those with service queries can fill in Tick Travel Insurance’s online query form should they need assistance, or contact at [email protected].

For 24-hour emergency assistance customers can call: +612 9333 3963.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.
