New England jonnycakes: traditional, yet ready for the party!

In New England, these little cornmeal pancakes are called jonnycakes (no “h”), sometimes jonny cakes, two words; in the south, they may be referred to as journey cakes or hoe cakes. They are also known as ashcake, and Shawnee cake, and probably a few more names. Everyone does agree that they originate in various forms with the native American populations which used corn as a mainstay of their diets.

There are lots of stories about jonnycakes and their name, but few actual facts to stand in the way of those many good stories.

Originally introduced to the pilgrims in Massachusetts, the form of this simple flatbread slowly evolved over time. The wheat flour the pilgrims brought from Europe spoiled during the long voyage, and the story goes that the settlers found a stash of the native’s corn and were shown how to grind it into a meal.  There are lots of stories about jonnycakes and their name, and few actual facts to stand in the way of those many good stories.

White flint corn meal

The original corn cakes made by the native population in the northeast for probably hundreds of years before the European settlers arrived. They used the Narragansett’s white flint corn meal and water, no leavening, no sweetening. Wheat did not grow well in New England, so corn was an important staple grain to the early settlers as well as the indigenous people.

Through the centuries, butter and milk were added, and in more modern times, the additions of wheat flour, eggs,  and baking powder added fluffiness and a more pancake-like texture to the cakes. In some areas of the country today, cornbread, baked in a loaf, cake pan, or cast-iron skillet is also referred to as jonnycake, and delicious as they are, I doubt the purists would agree!

If you come from Rhode Island, todays epicenter of jonnycake lore and expertise (they even have festivals) you many insist the only cornmeal to use in making a jonnycake is the traditional white cap flint corn. It is unique, with a slight bitter edge, erratic growing habits, and low yield, which is one of the reasons it is no longer widely grown, even in New England. Most often, these cakes are made with the more common and easily found  cornmeals.

For the traditional cakes, I used the heirloom Narragansette white flint corn, the original corn used by the natives of southwestern New England. I purchased it on-line from the Grays Grist Mill in Adamsville, RI. It is a beautifully textured meal, stone-ground in one of the country’s oldest continually operating grist mill, established before 1700. Their granite stones have been at work for over 300 years.

Little variation in recipes

Most, but not all, of the traditional recipes call for boiling water. Some used milk, but this would not have been the original used by the pilgrims. Most add a little sugar, again, not the first settlers or native population. Almost all suggested drizzling with maple syrup, and that was all right with me.

I made both the thin and the thick versions using just the meal, water, and salt. The thin cakes were really thin! They were difficult to turn without breaking, but got nice crispy edges. When cool, they were still a bit pliable, and were quite tasty.

The thick method cakes were easier to work with and would most probably have a wider range of uses.

One ingredient, so it had better be good!

There is not a lot of wiggle room when playing with a recipe that has for all intents and purposes just one ingredient! So my option was to add a few flavors. My own contribution to the cakes was some minced scallions, which game them a lovely flavor, and just a touch of minced Serrano peppers. I made a few in the two-inch size, but made a batch in little silver dollar size and dressed them up for a party. I still drizzled the maple syrup to add just a bit of sweet tradition.

You can serve these savory or sweet, hot or room temperature, as a stack, or a wrap filled with just about anything. They are gluten free, and if you don’t use milk, vegan as well.

Since the white flint cornmeal is difficult to find, any good quality stone-ground cornmeal can be substituted, but you will have to adjust the liquid content. Look for an heirloom variety if possible.

Jonnycake (thin)

Recipe from Grey’s Grist Mill

1 cup stone-ground white flint corn meal

1/2 tsp. salt

1 7/8 cup water or milk

2 tsp. sugar, optional

Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Let sit for a few minutes while griddle heats to 375. I found I had to reduce this a little. Drop by spoonful onto the lightly greased griddle and cook until the edges brown.

Carefully turn. I used a very thin spatula and ran it slowly around the entire cake before attempting to flip.

Cook the second side  for a few more minutes and plate

Dot with butter and drizzle with maple syrup.

Jonnycakes (thick)

Recipe from Kenyon’s cornmeal company

1 cup stone-ground corn meal

1 tbsp. sugar

1 cup boiling water

Combine the dry, then pour boiling water over the mixture very slowly, adding just enough to swell the meal. Let it sit several minutes, then add enough milk so mixture will drop from a spoon.

Heat greased pancake griddle  or iron skillet to 380 and spoon batter onto hot surface. Again, I had to reduce this a bit, but perhaps my griddle just heats too hot. Let cook until the edges turn brown. Turn to brown other side. Serve with maple syrup and butter.

Jonnycake Party Bites

Make the thick jonnycake recipe above but add 2 tbsp. of finely minced scallions and one of finely minced hot pepper of choice.

Drop by the heaping measuring teaspoon, and cook until browned on the edges, then flip to cook the other side. The time will depend on how big you make them and how thick your batter. You want small, bite-sized cakes.

Top with a small dollop of half sour cream and half grainy mustard, add a slice of cherry tomato, and tuck in a few herbs.

Drizzle with the traditional dark amber maple syrup.

My grandmother made these but she used yellow corn and milk. She may have used eggs as well, but no one has the recipe! Alicia

Alicia, there are many variations as ingredients were added over the years. Too bad about the recipe. Our family has quite a few that are lost, or perhaps they were never really written down.

I see that I left a comment on this post a year ago, but I’m so glad you recently reminded me of it. Now that I’m grapping with how a adapt an old recipe that calls for corn meal, it’s really helpful to revisit this post and learn more about corn meal.

How To Make Belizean Johnny Cakes (Recipe)

If you have traveled to Belize , you may be familiar with a “Johnny Cake”. A  Johnny cake is to Belize what a croissant is to France. It is a delicious and relatively easy to make breakfast bread roll prepar ed and served hot every morning.  

It wouldn’ t be a complete surprise to know that 80 % of the Belizean population enjoy J ohnny cakes for breakfast on a daily . One can enjoy these small cakes with butter, jelly, cheese or beans. However, a Belizean favorite is with egg, ham , and cheese (what you would call your Egg McMuffin). You can sometimes add a twist to it and put stew chicken. 

Johnny cakes originated in North America, with Native Americans making them with cornmeal instead of flour.   

While a few stories have been passed around as to the origin of the name, perhaps the most popular one is that they were originally called Journey Cakes because of their ability to last on long trips. “Journey” eventually evolved to become “Johnny”.  

You can find Johnny Cakes throughout the Caribbean, and although the recipes do vary from country to country, place to place, or even from house to house, the general concept of the johnny-cake is the same – a quick and tasty little bread served with a meal or as a meal in itself.  

Wondering what to make for breakfast? Try your hand at Flavors of Belize’s Johnny Cake recipe. This recipe makes enough to feed a small army or at least the entire household, and only takes about 20 minutes .  

Johnny Cakes “Journey Cakes”  

Ingredients  .

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour  
  • 4 heaping teaspoons baking powder  
  • 2 teaspoons salt  
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening  
  • 1 cup coconut milk  

DIRECTIONS  

Heat oven to 400 F. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut shortening into the flour mixture, add coconut milk. Combine until dough is easy to handle. Add water if necessary. Knead dough until smooth, form into 2-inch balls and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Cover and let rest for about 15 minutes. Flatten slightly to about a half-inch thickness. Lightly pierce tops with fork. Bake until golden brown, 18 to 20 minutes.  

Makes approximately 24

Recipe and history of Journey Cake!

This cake originates with the Shawnees, who would cook a corn patty on a hot stone, that they would then take with them on day-long expeditions. Upon meeting them, European settlers noticed that this snack could keep for several days and was easily enough to feed a man on long journeys. They added wheat flour to it, to form a sort of bread.

That’s how it became known as the journey cake, the snack to take with you on an adventure. It then became the symbol of cakes to take on journeys because it could be transported in bags on long adventures or even cooked on the way. It didn’t dry up or get broken in the bottom of the bags. It was made using very simple ingredients that were easy to find. Journey cake then quite naturally became the snack to take with you to work, school, etc. The name of this iconic cake is a perfect representation of our culture.

The settlers took it all over the islands of the Caribbean, and after several linguistic and cultural modifications, it became also just as well-known under the name of Johnny cake . Historians also believe that “ janiken ”, a Native American word meaning “corn bread” could also be at the root of this cake.

Easy recipe

Journey cake can be eaten hot or cold – it can be a delicious accompaniment to hot dishes. This tasty, golden bread is a great source of energy, thanks to the carbohydrate content.

What are the ingredients to make journey cake?

To make a dozen bread rolls, you will need the following:

  • 300 grams of wheat flour,
  • 1 teaspoon of yeast/raising agent,
  • 1 large spoon of sugar,
  • 2 large spoons of butter,
  • A pinch of salt and some water to moisten the dough.

How to make journey cake?

To start, you need to sift the flour, raising agent, sugar and salt and then mix the melted butter in.

Mix it all in by hand and add some water to achieve the right consistency of the dough. It needs to be neither too sticky, nor too dry.

Then, shape the dough into a ball to be able to roll it out and then form a dozen smaller balls. Then flatten them slightly, like small loaves of bread.

Finally, fry them on both sides, in a big frying pan with some oil. Soak up the oil using paper towels.

All that’s left to do is taste this traditional recipe from St. Martin!

Belizean cuisine is inspired by British , Caribbean and Mexican cuisines. Indeed, the influence of Mexican and the neighboring Creole culture is deeply felt in the cuisine of Belize .

Belize is the only country in the region with English as the official language. It is the legacy of British colonial rule during which the country was called British Honduras. It nevertheless appears that Spanish is more widely spoken by its residents. In addition to the English traditions still present in the country today, Belize also enjoyed traditions imported by the many black slaves that came from Jamaica and St. Vincent which makes the country culturally rich and diverse.

What is a Johnny cake?

Johnny cake is to Belize what croissant is to France , the emblematic ingredient of a traditional breakfast. Johnny cakes are prepared and served hot every morning. With an english breakfast and its famous bacon and eggs, these Johnny cakes are a must. People eat it with butter and marmalade, or it is served with eggs, cheese and sausage, as Belizeans tend to prefer a savory meal to start the day. The Johnny cake recipe does not contain any sugar, so it can really be eaten with savory or sweet ingredients alike.

Where does the name of Johnny cake come from?

Originally called Journey cake , they were renamed Johnny cake, as people didn’t understand the word and it was difficult to pronounce! Coconut milk makes for a nice subtle touch on these rolls.

It was seaside, in Israel, that my very young niece Ava, very gifted in the kitchen, and I followed this Johnny cake recipe. Ava made those delicious Johnny cakes again by herself 3 days later! I think she’s ready to take over.

Johnny Cake

Ingredients.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (at room temperature), cut in small pieces
  • 1 cup coconut milk (or coconut cream)

Instructions

  • Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add the butter, and mix with your fingertips to obtain a homogeneous sandy consistency.
  • Then stir in coconut milk and knead quickly until forming a smooth ball that easily detaches from the container.
  • Divide the dough into balls the size of a golf ball. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let stand for 10 minutes.
  • Then slightly flatten the balls. Prick in several places with a fork.
  • Preheat oven to 400F / 200C. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes by placing the baking sheet towards the lower part of the oven. Then, place baking sheet near the top and bake for another 5 minutes. Times vary greatly from one oven to another, so pay close attention to the color of the Johnny cakes.
  • Enjoy Johnny cakes hot or warm, open and filled with sweet or savory ingredients.

What I meant is that it is so easy to find recipes from France, Italy, Mexico, Greece or India on the web… but not so much from countries like Belize. There was nothing pejorative about my choice of word. Sorry if I offended you. I’d actually love it if you could share Belizean recipes with us.

How do you keep them from getting hard???

Tamara, if you do not intend to eat them in the next 1-2 days, I would freeze them, then reheat them at 300 F for 30 minutes when you are ready to eat them.

If you consume them in the next 1-2 days, then just make sure to wrap them in a clean cloth.

If you prefer a less crusty Johnny Cake like I do, bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes instead then lightly brown in the bottom of the oven (broiler). Also, you may want to cut down the butter just a little and instead add 2 or 3 tablspoons of Shortening . This will give it a softer, less crumbly texture. Lastly, I’ve found that a good rule of thumb for most Belizean breakfast ‘breads’ is 1 tspn baking powder to 1 cup flour. …just some friendly suggestions ?

It’s 6am on a nice Sunday morning and im gonna make some of these right now for the family to eat for breakfast when they wake up – good along with steamed Calaloo sautéed in butter, garlic and onion, Belizean Fried beans, a slice or two of your favorite cheese and some fresh brewed coffee!

Callaloo is a type of green leaf vegetable much like chaya or spinach. The Carribean type most often used is green edible Amaranth i believe. Like spinach its eaten steamed, sautéed, stir fried or even in juices! Health properties are much like any other grean leafy vegetable including cancer fighting properties, immune system enhancer, anti-oxidant rich etc etc. also can add to soups, rice etc

Your recipe is slightly off. Too much butter. Cut the butter by half if you are using coconut milk. Coconut milk have oil so you do not have to use so much butter. Use 1 tsp. baking powder to 1 cup of flour. Rule of thumb when baking – as soon as the bottom is slightly brown, turn the broiler on to get the top brown. The center will be soft but done. I’m a Belizean and I never buy bread. Too easy to make Johnny Cake.

Rhode Islanders have come to blows over jonnycakes for any number of reasons–over how they originated (Indians vs. settlers), over how to spell the name ( journey-cake vs. Johnny cake vs. Jonny cake vs. johnnycake vs. jonnycake ), over which kind of corn to grind for jonnycake meal (whitecap flint vs. white dent), and even over how to grind that corn (hot and round vs. flat and cool). Of course the most heated arguments occur over the “correct” way to make them: Debates about the merits of South County (West Bay)-style (thick, made with boiling water) vs. Newport County (East Bay)-style (thin, made with cold milk) have even reached the Rhode Island legislature. It’s enough to work up a healthy appetite.

Johnnycake s (also called journey cake , johnny bread , hoecake , shawnee cake or spider cornbread ) are a cornmeal flatbread from American cuisine . An early American staple food , it is prepared on the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to Jamaica . The food originates from the indigenous people of North America. It is still eaten in the West Indies , Dominican Republic , Saint Croix , The Bahamas , Colombia , and Bermuda as well as in the United States and Canada .

The modern johnnycake is found in the cuisine of New England , and is often claimed as originating in Rhode Island . A modern johnnycake is fried cornmeal gruel , which is made from yellow or white cornmeal mixed with salt and hot water or milk, and sometimes sweetened. In the Southern United States , the term used is hoecake , although this can also refer to cornbread fried in a pan.

The earliest attestation of the term "johnny cake" is from 1739 (in South Carolina); the spelling "journey cake" is only attested from 1775 on the Gulf Coast , but may be the earlier form.

The word is likely based on the word Jonakin , recorded in New England in 1765, itself derived from the word jannock , recorded in Northern England in the sixteenth century. According to Edward Ellis Morris, the term was the name given "... by the [American] negroes to a cake made of Indian corn (maize)."

Another suggested derivation is that it comes from Shawnee cake , although some writers disagree.

The term hoecake is first attested in 1745, and the term is used by American writers such as Joel Barlow and Washington Irving . The origin of the name is the method of preparation: they were cooked on a type of iron pan called a hoe. There is conflicting evidence regarding the common belief that they were cooked on the blades of gardening hoes.

A hoecake can be made either out of cornbread batter or leftover biscuit dough. A cornbread hoecake is thicker than a cornbread pancake.

Indigenous peoples of the Americas using ground corn for cooking are credited with teaching Europeans how to make the food. It is also claimed that johnnycakes were made by the Narragansett People as far back as the 1600s.

Southern Native American culture ( Cherokee , Chickasaw , Choctaw , Creek ) is the cornerstone of Southern cuisine. From this culture came one of the main staples of the Southern diet: corn (maize). Corn was used to make all kinds of dishes from the familiar cornbread and grits to liquors such as whiskey and moonshine , which were important trade items. Cornbread was popular during the American Civil War because it was very cheap and could be made in many different sizes and forms. It could be fashioned into high-rising, fluffy loaves or simply fried for a fast meal.

To a far greater degree than anyone realizes, several of the most important food dishes that the Southeastern Indians live on today is the "soul food" eaten by both black and white Southerners. Hominy, for example, is still eaten ... Sofkee live on as grits ... cornbread [is] used by Southern cooks ... Indian fritters ... variously known as "hoe cake", ... or "Johnny cake."... Indian boiled cornbread is present in Southern cuisine as "corn meal dumplings", ... and as "hush puppies", ... Southerners cook their beans and field peas by boiling them, as did the Indians ... like the Indians they cure their meat and smoke it over hickory coals.

Johnnycakes are an unleavened cornbread made of cornmeal, salt, and water. Early cooks set thick corn dough on a wooden board or barrel stave, which they leaned on a piece of wood or a rock in front of an open fire to bake.

After mixing meal with water or milk it is dropped on a smoking hot spider [pan] set atop a stove into cakes about 3"x3"x1/2" in size. The secret of cooking jonny cakes is to watch them closely and keep them supplied with enough sausage or bacon fat so they will become crisp, and not burn. Cook slowly for half an hour, turn occasionally, and when done serve with plenty of butter.

In Australia , "johnny cakes" refers to a quick bread usually known as damper , but cooked as smaller, individually-sized portions, and often pan-fried, rather than as a loaf. It is uncertain if this name was influenced by the term for North American cornmeal bread. However, Australian johnny cakes are made with wheat flour rather than cornmeal; the cakes are baked in the hot coals of a fire or fried in fat in a frying pan (skillet).

In the late 19th-century corn was still an ingredient in Bahamian Johnny Bread, but at some point in the 20th-century, it was removed.

Yaniqueques or yanikeke are a Dominican Republic version of the jonnycake, supposedly brought over in the nineteenth century by English-speaking migrants (possibly of Afro-Caribbean descent). Even though there are fewer species of nocturnal insects, especially those in aquatic environments, their level of activity at night can be much higher compared to that of terrestrial insects during the day. This higher activity at night in water-based habitats may be an evolutionary adaptation to avoid predators that are active during daylight hours, such as fish.

Here, diurnal insects (those that are more active during the day) can thrive, engaging in activities like pollination and foraging without the thermal stress encountered by their tropical counterparts.

Moreover, global warming poses a significant threat to these finely tuned behaviors. Great app but one small but essential thing

I just got this app and I already enjoy it! Though when it says I get free 20 generations, I was hoping I would get a few free generations a day (like 3-5 or something). I was a little bummed out when i see that it’s not the case. So as a suggestion, i would like there be a few free generations a day kind of feature. I’m sure folks would love that. Other than that, I really enjoy this app.

Does Not Work with High Load of Generations

The Niji journey app make my phone hotter than when I’m playing a graphic intensive game like genshin or tower of fantasy. When I begin to do more than 4 generations I only do 3 at a time, my phone gets hot the app basically stops responding. It makes it impossible to look up a previous photo to make generation of it. When you got to your profile it takes 3+ mins to load your list and then once you are there it won’t let you select any of them. The app has more functionality than discord and more options but it’s almost unusable after 10 mins or one visit to your profile page. Please fix this for those who generate high numbers of photos.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We have been made aware of this issue, and have released some updates to address this. We are also constantly working towards making the app better, and if you are able to help give us more specific information. We can take a closer, and better look.

Pretty good

Mainly, there are no issues that have really messed with the app or the experience. The app runs smoothly, you can see the image progress, you can choose prompts, and add reference photos which is all amazing. HOWEVER, a big issue I run into is when a ‘Job failed to run’ while using a free trial. It takes one of your free generations without even showing a result. Or if you cancel a generation, you don't get your little trial generation back. The app is good, I’m just not sure if these are bugs or something :)

The House voted resoundingly on Saturday to approve $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as Speaker Mike Johnson put his job on the line to advance the long-stalled aid package by marshaling support from mainstream Republicans and Democrats.

In four back-to-back votes, overwhelming bipartisan coalitions of lawmakers approved fresh rounds of funding for the three U.S. allies, as well as another bill meant to sweeten the deal for conservatives that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

The scene on the House floor reflected both the broad support in Congress for continuing to help the Ukrainian military beat back Russia, and the extraordinary political risk taken by Mr. Johnson to defy the anti-interventionist wing of his party who had sought to thwart the measure. Minutes before the vote on assistance for Kyiv, Democrats began to wave small Ukrainian flags on the House floor, as hard-right Republicans jeered.

How the House Voted on Foreign Aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

Here’s how each member of the House voted on the foreign aid bills.

The legislation includes $60 billion for Kyiv; $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. It would direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance, a concept supported by former President Donald J. Trump, who had pushed for any aid to Kyiv to be in the form of a loan. But it also would allow the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026.

It also contained a measure to help pave the way to selling off frozen Russian sovereign assets to help fund the Ukrainian war effort, and a new round of sanctions on Iran. The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday and send it to President Biden’s desk, capping its tortured journey through Congress.

“Our adversaries are working together to undermine our Western values and demean our democracy,” Representative Michael McCaul, Republican of Texas and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said Saturday as the House debated the measure. “We cannot be afraid at this moment. We have to do what’s right. Evil is on the march. History is calling and now is the time to act.”

“History will judge us by our actions here today,” he continued. “As we deliberate on this vote, you have to ask yourself this question: ‘Am I Chamberlain or Churchill?’”

The vote was 311 to 112 in favor of the aid to Ukraine, with a majority of Republicans — 112 — voting against it and one, Representative Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, voting “present.” The House approved assistance to Israel 366 to 58; and to Taiwan 385 to 34, with Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, voting “present.” The bill to impose sanctions on Iran and require the sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner or ban the app in the United States passed 360 to 58.

“Today, members of both parties in the House voted to advance our national security interests and send a clear message about the power of American leadership on the world stage,” Mr. Biden said. “At this critical inflection point, they came together to answer history’s call, passing urgently needed national security legislation that I have fought for months to secure.”

Minutes after the vote, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine thanked lawmakers, singling out Mr. Johnson by name “for the decision that keeps history on the right track.”

“Democracy and freedom will always have global significance and will never fail as long as America helps to protect it,” he wrote on social media. “The vital U.S. aid bill passed today by the House will keep the war from expanding, save thousands and thousands of lives, and help both of our nations to become stronger.”

Outside the Capitol, a jubilant crowd waved Ukrainian flags and chanted, “Thank you U.S.A.” as exiting lawmakers gave them a thumbs-up and waved smaller flags of their own.

For months, it had been uncertain whether Congress would approve new funding for Ukraine, even as momentum shifted in Moscow’s favor. That prompted a wave of anxiety in Kyiv and in Europe that the United States, the single biggest provider of military aid to Ukraine, would turn its back on the young democracy.

And it raised questions about whether the political turmoil that has roiled the United States had effectively destroyed what has long been a strong bipartisan consensus in favor of projecting American values around the world. The last time the Congress approved a major tranche of funding to Ukraine was in 2022, before Republicans took control of the House.

With an “America First” sentiment gripping the party’s voter base, led by Mr. Trump, Republicans dug in last year against another aid package for Kyiv, saying the matter should not even be considered unless Mr. Biden agreed to stringent anti-immigration measures. When Senate Democrats agreed earlier this year to legislation that paired the aid with stiffer border enforcement provisions, Mr. Trump denounced it and Republicans rejected it out of hand.

But after the Senate passed its own $95 billion emergency aid legislation for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without any immigration measures, Mr. Johnson began — first privately, then loudly — telling allies that he would ensure the U.S. would send aid to Kyiv.

In the end, even in the face of an ouster threat from ultraconservative members, he circumvented the hard-line contingent of lawmakers that once was his political home and relied on Democrats to push the measure through. It was a remarkable turnabout for a right-wing lawmaker who voted repeatedly against aid to Ukraine as a rank-and-file member, and as recently as a couple of months ago declared he would never allow the matter to come to a vote until his party’s border demands were met.

In the days leading up to the vote, Mr. Johnson began forcefully making the case that it was Congress’s role to help Ukraine fend off the advances of an authoritarian. Warning that Russian forces could march through the Baltics and Poland if Ukraine falls, Mr. Johnson said he had made the decision to advance aid to Kyiv because he “would rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys.”

“I think this is an important moment and important opportunity to make that decision,” Mr. Johnson told reporters at the Capitol after the votes. “I think we did our work here and I think history will judge it well.”

Mr. Johnson structured the measures, which were sent to the Senate as one bill, to capture different coalitions of support without allowing opposition to any one element to defeat the whole thing.

“I’m going to allow an opportunity for every single member of the House to vote their conscience and their will,” he had said.

In a nod to right-wing demands, Mr. Johnson allowed a vote just before the foreign aid bills on a stringent border enforcement measure, but it was defeated after failing to reach the two-thirds majority needed for passage. And the speaker refused to link the immigration bill to the foreign aid package, knowing that would effectively kill the spending plan.

His decision to advance the package infuriated the ultraconservatives in his conference who accused Mr. Johnson of reneging on his promise not to allow a vote on foreign aid without first securing sweeping policy concessions on the southern border. It prompted two Republicans, Representatives Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona to join a bid by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia to oust Mr. Johnson from the top job.

Ms. Greene claimed the Ukraine aid bill supported “a business model built on blood and murder and war in foreign countries.”

“We should be funding to build up our weapons and ammunition, not to send it over to foreign countries,” she said before her proposal to zero out the money for Kyiv failed on a vote of 351 to 71.

Much of the funding for Ukraine is earmarked to replenish U.S. stockpiles after shipping supplies to Kyiv.

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Congress has appropriated $113 billion in funding to support Ukraine’s war effort. $75 billion was directly allocated to the country for humanitarian, financial and military support, and another $38 billion in security assistance-related funding was spent largely in the United States, according to the Institute for Study of War , a Washington-based research group.

Hard-right Republican opposition to the legislation — both on the House floor and in the critical Rules panel — forced Mr. Johnson to rely on Democrats to push the legislation across the finish line.

“If Ukraine does not receive this support that it requires to defeat Russia’s outrageous assault on its sovereign territory, the legacy of this Congress will be the appeasement of a dictator, the destruction of an allied nation and a fractured Europe,” said Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee. “Gone will be our credibility, in the eyes of our allies and of our adversaries. And gone will be the America that promised to stand up for freedom, democracy, and human rights, wherever they are threatened or wherever they are under attack.”

Thirty-seven liberal Democrats opposed the $26 billion aid package for Israel because the legislation placed no conditions on how Israel could use American funding, as the death toll in Gaza has reached more than 33,000 and the threat of famine looms. That showed a notable dent in the longstanding ironclad bipartisan backing for Israel in Congress, but was a relatively small bloc of opposition given that left-wing lawmakers had pressed for a large “no” vote on the bill to send a message to Mr. Biden about the depth of opposition within his political coalition to his backing for Israel’s tactics in the war.

“Sending more weapons to the Netanyahu government will make the U.S. even more responsible for atrocities and the horrific humanitarian crisis in Gaza which is now in a season of famine,” said Representative Jonathan L. Jackson, Democrat of Illinois.

‘Young Sheldon’: Raegaen Revord Reflects on Her Journey as Missy Cooper in New Set Images

Six more episodes and it is curtains for Young Sheldon . After seven seasons and over 100 episodes, we say goodbye to the Coopers of Medford, Texas. The fan-favorite comedy series has wrapped filming on its final season recently, and the emotional goodbyes have begun to roll in . The show premiered in September 2017 as a prequel to the iconic show, The Big Bang Theory , and focused on the childhood of Sheldon Cooper. This meant a very young cast would take the lead, as Iain Armitage , only eight at the time took on the role of Sheldon. Raegan Revord, who plays Sheldon's twin sister, Missy , came aboard the show aged nine. Now, aged 16 and seven years down the line, the young actress looks back on what has been a thrilling ride with a bittersweet ending.

The Coopers of East Texas have become a family we have all come to love over the years onscreen. While the show could very easily have continued, the already established timeline from the flagship series means CBS have to conclude at this stage . Taking to her Instagram account , Revord shares a series of images looking back at her seven-year stint playing Missy on Young Sheldon . The photos included some old images from very early on in the show and more recent photos as the show comes to an end.

Attached is a caption from Revord emphasizing how much she has grown in the time period, and how grateful she is for the experience. The caption reads: " They say it takes a village to raise a child and I think I’ve had the most incredible village thanks to our cast, guest cast, crew, and producers . Will Missy Return?

While Young Sheldon might be coming to an end, there is already a beaten pathway for the return of some members of the Cooper family with the announcement of the Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) spinoff . The show is set to feature how Georgie and Mandy handle the pressures of raising a family while chasing their separate careers . While Missy is arguably the best character of Young Sheldon in earlier seasons, there has been a shift in recent years with the build up of her older brother, Georgie. Currently, Missy will not be a part of the upcoming spinoff , as the actress revealed she has not been invited to partake in the project.
