Newport, Rhode Island Wine Tasting Tours

Newport, R. I. — One of the joys in life is finding, well, joy in unexpected places. Did you believe you had to travel to Bordeaux or Napa to experience fine wine? Actually, it’s right here. Yes, the wines are different; there are real winters here, but also warm, savory summers. Add to that, cool nights, ocean breezes, and rocky soil (actually good for the grapes), and—surprise!—you have the ingredients for very good wine. Who knew? . . . Frankly, a lot of people, apparently.

A Local’s Guide to the Best Wineries in Newport, RI

Visitors enjoy wine tasting at Greenvale Vineyards in Newport, RI, with groups gathered around barrel tables under parasols amidst lush greenery, capturing the relaxed, communal atmosphere of this historic vineyard.

Are you a wine enthusiast planning a getaway to the Ocean State? Wondering how to make the most of your trip? Why not check out the wineries in Newport, RI!

Newport may be renowned for its Gilded Age mansions that once hosted extravagant wine parties (Champagne fountains and all). But even without your own mansion, there’s a lot to uncork and explore in the area, especially if you’re a wine lover.

As a certified wine expert and local New Englander, I’ve visited Newport and its wineries many times. And I put together this guide to the top ones to visit.

Find out the perfect time to visit and the must-try wines. Plus, all the extras like food, live music, and fun events. So, let’s start planning your Newport wine tasting trip!

The Best Wineries in Newport, RI

Greenvale vineyards.

The charming exterior of Greenvale Vineyards' tasting room in Newport, RI, with its classic white facade and green shutters, alongside a meandering path leading to an outdoor seating area where guests enjoy the winery's offerings under the summer sky.

Tucked down a winding road behind a polo club and a golf course in Portsmouth, RI, you’ll find Greenvale Vineyards . Pulling into the parking lot, you’ll be greeted by rows upon rows of lush grapevines lead down to sweeping views of the Sakonnet River.

The first grapes were planted on the land in the 1700s by a merchant from Portugal. A couple hundred years later, the Parker family arrived. Cortlandt Parker Jr. started off with several types of hybrid grapes, including Marechal Foch, Vidal Blanc, and Cayuga.

Since then, the vineyard has passed to Cortlandt’s daughter, Nancy Parker Wilson. Her family now runs Greenvale Vineyards. And they’ve expanded the plantings to include international varieties.

All the wines are estate grown and hand harvested. And they focus on low-intervention winemaking methods to bring out the natural flavors of the fruit.

A welcoming sign at Greenvale Vineyards in Newport, RI, featuring a regal blue and gold design, invites visitors to the winery where guests are seen enjoying wine at picnic tables under umbrellas, set against a backdrop of vineyards.

Wines to Try

Greenvale makes a range of white wines like Chardonnay , Vidal Blanc, and Albariño . And their red wines include Cabernet Franc and a Meritage blend (i.e., a Bordeaux-style blend ).

I love their Cabernet Franc. It’s blended with a little Merlot to add softness and fruit flavors like lush cherry. These balance nicely with the pepper and spice notes from the Cab Franc.

And if you’re into skin-contact wines, try the Pinot Gris Ramato. The Ramato style comes from Friuli in Northeast Italy, where the grape is known as Pinot Grigio. The juice spends time on the skins, giving it a coppery tint, more texture, and flavors of dried fruits.

Greenvale’s lawn is perfect for a winery picnic . Speckled with vineyard-side tables, there’s ample outdoor seating to stake your claim even if you have a larger group.

Once you’re settled in, head to the outdoor tasting bar. You can get a glass or build your own wine flight.

Greenvale is open year-round, and reservations are not required for wine tastings. But if you’d like to do a wine tour, be sure to book in advance. And check the event calendar for the on-site food trucks and seasonal live music schedule.

Newport Vineyards

The entrance of Newport Vineyards, a winery in Newport, RI, with its inviting facade, adorned with lush planters and a welcoming sign, indicating tours and tastings that await visitors inside.

Just a short drive from Greenvale, Newport Vineyards is located on East Main Rd. in Middletown.

John and Paul Nunes founded the winery in 1995. Their great-grandfather was the first to own the land known as Bailey Farm. The brothers have since expanded the property to include a former potato farm. And it now includes 100 acres of land, with 50 of those under vine.

Paul runs the vineyard, while John takes the lead in the winery and business operations. They focus on international red and white grape varieties in still and sparkling styles. And they produce some other specialty wines like fortified port-like wines and ice wines.

In the past decade, this Newport winery went through a large-scale expansion. It now includes a beautiful new tasting room and private event venue, a winery tank room, a farm-to-table style restaurant, a shop, and even Taproot Brewing Co., a brewery making craft beers.

The tasting room at Newport Vineyards with rows of oak wine barrels stacked against the wall, a welcoming bar area featuring the vineyard's emblem, ready for guests to sample locally produced wines.

Newport Vineyards produces white wines like Sauvignon Blanc , Riesling, Chardonnay , Gewürztraminer , and other varietal blends. Plus, red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, and Pinot Noir.

The Landot Noir red wine is a rare find. Only four states are growing this grape. It’s a hybrid with notes of blackberry and plum. The high tannins make for a good pairing with steak or aged cheese and cured meats.

Also, if you haven’t tried ice wine before, I’d recommend sampling it here. It’s one of my favorite dessert wines. And it can only be made naturally in cool climates.

The grapes are left on the vine until it’s cold enough that the water inside them freezes. The frozen grapes are quickly pressed to extract the concentrated juice. And this produces a luscious wine with pure varietal flavors.

Step up to first-come, first serve bar in Newport Vineyard’s rustic-style tasting room. Here, you can choose wines and fresh craft beer to sample from their large menu.

Then head outdoors to the vineyard-side Adirondack chairs. Outside chairs and blankets are welcome too! Enjoy some live music and sip your vino by the Pinot Noir grapes.

Hungry? Grab a bite (and wine or beer flights) at the grill. Or make a reservation to visit the on-site Brix Restaurant. Ingredients for their snacks , shared bites, sandwiches, and pizzas are all sourced from local farms. And the food is made from scratch.

Make sure to stop by the marketplace to pick up your favorite bottles. Plus, check out the adorable New England nautical décor. And keep an eye on their website calendar for special events like wine & cheese tastings, barre classes, and sip n’ shop nights.

Where to Stay for Visiting Wineries Near Newport

Fun fact: When my dad was a teenager, he got quarantined in Newport’s Marble House mansion for a week after Hepatitis exposure.

He often shares the story of his adventurous week at family gatherings, which involved board games at the banquet table, library ladder races, and secret access to a wine cellar two floors below ground.

Unfortunately, you can’t stay at Marble House or the Breakers these days. But don’t worry, you can still live it up like a Vanderbilt at one of Newport’s many other luxurious mansions that have been turned into inns and bed & breakfasts.

One of my favorites is The Cliffside Inn . This romantic Victorian mansion is newly renovated and just steps from the Newport Cliff Walk. They offer complimentary wine (yes, free wine!) and snacks each day at 5 pm, and a gourmet breakfast in the morning.

The Cliffside Inn in Newport, RI, radiates historic charm with its green and beige Victorian architecture, a welcoming front porch with seasonal decorations, and a rooftop deck that offers a glimpse into the luxurious stay guests can expect.

Take your pick from 16 unique and colorful rooms. Each one is decked out in décor inspired by Beatrice Turner, a 20th-century painter and one of the former homeowners.

We stayed in the Tower Suite, a two-story room connected by a spiral staircase in one of the mansion’s turrets. It comes with your own private patio and entrance, two fireplaces, and a jetted tub.

Newport Wine Region

A serene view from Greenvale Vineyards, overlooking gentle slopes of vibrant green vines leading down to the peaceful waters of the Sakonnet River, encapsulating the natural beauty of the coastal Rhode Island landscape.

You might think this area is too cold for grape growing. But it’s made possible here because Newport is on the southern tip of Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island.

It’s no coincidence that many wineries are found near bodies of water. Why? Well, heat from the water and sunlight reflecting off the water can extend the growing season in cooler climates. This is especially important so that grapes can fully ripen.

That’s why Aquidneck Island is a prime location for grape growing in New England. You get the warm waters of the Gulf Stream coming up from the South into Rhode Island Sound. And it’s sandwiched by Narragansett Bay and the Sakonnet River.

Rhode Island's Enchanting Wineries

Winemaking processes: a blend of tradition and innovation.

Beyond their delightful drinks, Rhode Island's wineries offer a glimpse into the captivating winemaking process. The artisans combine age-old techniques with modern innovations to craft each unique bottle. Tours of these facilities reveal the care, creativity, and craftsmanship behind each wine, transforming an informative visit into an exciting adventure.

Many Rhode Island wineries champion sustainable farming methods, prioritizing the land's health and grape quality. These environmentally friendly practices not only contribute positively to our planet but also yield some of the state's most flavorful wines.

The vineyards themselves offer a visual feast, with lush vines under open skies and occasional bursts of color from blooming flowers. Some wineries elevate the tasting experience by offering picnics amongst the vines, merging the joy of wine tasting with the natural beauty of Rhode Island.

Langworthy Farm Winery, Tapped Apple Winery and Cidery, and Leyden Farm Vineyard and Winery are renowned establishments in the picturesque state of Rhode Island, each bringing a unique flavor and ambiance to the local wine and cider scene.

Langworthy Farm Winery , known for its charming hospitality and superb wine selections, is nestled within a historic area, allowing visitors to explore both the local heritage and a variety of wines crafted with precision and care.

Tapped Apple Winery and Cidery stands out with its innovative approach to cider and wine creation, offering a diverse array of flavors and blends that satisfy both traditionalists and those seeking a modern twist. Meanwhile,

Leyden Farm Vineyard and Winery offers an idyllic wine-tasting experience amidst lush landscapes, delivering delectable wines that encompass the essence of the region's terroir. These wineries and cidery contribute significantly to Rhode Island’s growing reputation as a destination for those who appreciate fine wines and ciders, enhancing the state’s culinary and tourism landscapes. Newport Vineyards also provides beautiful scenery, wine tastings, and delicious bites to eat along with a brewery onsite.

So, if you're ready to experience New England’s charm, Rhode Island's enchanting wineries are the perfect destination. Here, you'll not only discover fine wines, but also the passion, dedication, and innovation that define Rhode Island's winemaking community.

Rhode Island's Craft Breweries: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Experience traditional and innovative brews.

Rhode Island's craft breweries offer a flavorful adventure, where traditional brewing techniques meet bold creativity. The result is a diverse range of beers for both traditionalists and adventurous drinkers. From history-inspired lagers to boundary-pushing ales, these breweries present a unique symphony of tastes. They prioritize locally sourced ingredients, highlighting the community's commitment to sustainability and high-quality products. Whether you favor classic brews or crave novelty, Rhode Island's craft breweries deliver.

Behind the Scenes of Brewing

Rhode Island's craft breweries offer more than just delicious beer. They open their doors for you to witness the transformation from grain to glass. Participate in a guided tour and you'll see the brewing process up close, from the mash tuns where it all begins to the fermentation tanks where the magic occurs. You'll hear the stories behind each brew and meet the passionate brewers responsible for their creation. Tasting sessions provide the perfect opportunity to appreciate the brewers' hard work, making it a wonderful way to engage with the community, learn about brewing, and savor some excellent beers.

Narragansett Brewery, Buttonwoods Brewery, and Tilted Barn Brewery are distinctive craft beer establishments, each bringing a unique brewing philosophy and atmosphere to Rhode Island's vibrant beer scene.

Narragansett Brewery ’s new Providence brewery and taproom, located across from India Point Park, boasts a spacious 18,000-square-foot facility, featuring an inviting indoor taproom, a cozy bar, and an al fresco patio that offers distant waterfront views of Narragansett Bay, making it a versatile space for casual visits or events.

Buttonwoods Brewery, founded in December 2017, is driven by a relentless pursuit of quality, specializing in well-hopped IPAs, sophisticated Saisons, and intriguing barrel-aged beers, offering a dynamic beer list in a friendly tasting room environment where visitors can unwind with a game of cornhole.

Pawutcket  has more breweries than any other city in Rhode Island which makes for a great brewery trail weekend. Foolproof Brewing Company is one of the many boasting award-winning beers like Ocean State Lager, Peanut Butter Raincloud Porter, and Farmhouse Ale to name a few.

Lastly, Tilted Barn Brewery provides a farm-to-pint experience, offering tours and tastings at their small farm brewery where visitors can witness firsthand the ingredients grown on-site for each batch of beer, enhancing the overall experiential element with their newly opened barn for on-site pours and cans-to-go. Each of these breweries enriches the local craft beer culture in Rhode Island, offering unique flavors, experiences, and a sense of community for beer enthusiasts.

Food and Brews: A Perfect Pairing

But beer isn't the only thing on the menu. Many Rhode Island breweries have elevated pub food, transforming a casual pint and snack into a gastronomic delight. Be it a juicy burger complemented by a stout or a fresh salad paired with a crisp pale ale, the food not only enhances the beer but also showcases Rhode Island's culinary variety. So, take a seat, raise a glass, and get ready for a flavorful adventure that marries Rhode Island's top brews with its delectable cuisine.

Pairing Pleasures: Combining Food and Beverages

Suggested pairings.

Rhode Island's master winemakers and brewers excel at pairing their exquisite beverages with local delicacies. Here are some must-try combinations:

  • Seafood and white wine: With a coastline stretching 400 miles, Rhode Island's seafood is second to none. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc brings out the fresh, delicate flavors of clam chowder or a seafood platter.
  • Red wine and red meat: A juicy steak or grilled sausages pair beautifully with a bold red wine. The robust flavors of a Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon enhance the rich, savory taste of red meats.
  • Beer and pizza : Pizza and beer are classic companions. The malty goodness of an ale perfectly complements a cheesy pizza, making for a hearty, satisfying meal.

These instances only touch the tip of the iceberg. Experimenting to find your own favorite combinations is highly encouraged!

Culinary Excellence

Rhode Island's culinary scene is as varied as it is vibrant. From casual gastropubs pairing innovative brews with gourmet burgers to upscale seafood restaurants serving local white wines with freshly caught lobster, there's a taste experience for everyone.

Some restaurants offer curated tasting menus, where each course comes with a perfectly matched wine or beer. These experiences showcase Rhode Island's culinary and beverage expertise, making for an unforgettable dining experience.

Whether you're a food and drink novice or a seasoned connoisseur, Rhode Island's pairing experiences are sure to delight your taste buds and expand your culinary knowledge.

Family-Friendly Experiences

A visit to a Rhode Island winery or brewery is more than just a day out. It's an opportunity to appreciate the state's natural beauty, learn about local agriculture, and experience the warmth of the community.

You'll find something to please every palate, whether you're drawn to the intricate craft of winemaking or bold innovation in brewing. Lest we forget, the culinary delights here are noteworthy! Pairing local food with well-crafted drinks leads to a diverse and satisfying gastronomic adventure.

This experience isn't reserved for adults alone. The state caters to families as well, offering fun activities, non-alcoholic choices, and welcoming spaces for all ages. So, why delay? Organize your Rhode Island trip and embark on a flavorful adventure in the Ocean State!
