7 of the Best Northern Lights Cruises

Set sail on these itineraries to try to spot the aurora borealis.

northern lights cruise iceland 2023

If seeing the northern lights , also known as the aurora borealis, is on your travel list, you've probably already looked into the best places to see them : northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland , and Scandinavia among them. But have you ever considered visiting those destinations by sea rather than land? Many cruise lines not only offer itineraries to those regions but also offer northern lights-specific sailings, too. Cruising is particularly appealing for northern lights seekers because the ships can access remote areas without light pollution, allowing guests to see the aurora in its full brilliance. So if you haven't yet seen the northern lights — or if you're looking to see them again — here are seven northern lights cruises to help you accomplish your goal.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de/Getty Images

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam , then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The sailings start in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before sailing south along the coast, heading back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Aurora offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,705.50 per person in 2023.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back. Rates start from $2,309 per person in 2023.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. As the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the northern lights are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,501 per person in 2023.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, you can opt for the 13-day Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2023, the voyage will be undertaken by Queen Victoria , while next season, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins. Rates start from $1,689 per person in 2023.

P&O: Norway

The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,385 per person in 2023.

Amazing 2 Hour Northern Lights Cruise with Transfer from Reykjavik Harbor

Amazing 2 Hour Northern Lights Cruise with Transfer from Reykjavik Harbor

Description

Marvel over the magical aurora borealis from the sea, with this Northern Lights Cruise from Reykjavík. This tour should not be missed by those seeking a unique way to enjoy Iceland’s most renowned natural phenomenon.

This tour begins at Reykjavík’s Old Harbour, where your vessel is waiting. This boat has a spacious indoor area you can stay warm in, with a bar that will provide you with a free warm drink, and offers protective overalls to further help stave off the cold. Of course, it also has outdoor decks for optimal aurora watching.

Once the captain is ready, the boat will set out into Faxaflói. The city lights will shrink behind you, but you will still be able to see the capital’s important landmarks, such as Harpa and Hallgrímskirkja. As soon as you are far enough from it, the light pollution will be so little that it will not affect your viewing experience.

All that is needed for the Northern Lights to show is a clear, dark sky, enough solar activity, and a little luck. Being in the middle of a pitch-black bay, with a dome of stars above, makes your odds of catching them much higher than if you were trying to find a spot in the city away from the lights and buildings.

Keep an eye on the sky until the auroras begin to descend; the guides on board will be doing the same, and are excellent at spotting signs of their arrival. As soon as they appear, you and your group will no doubt be mesmerised in silence, in complete awe of their unreal beauty.

After a hopefully incredible aurora show, your boat will return to Reykjavík, however if you don’t catch sight of them (which can happen due to the fickleness of nature) you need not worry as you will be able to take another cruise out for free!

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to watch the Northern Lights at sea.

Northern Lights Cruise: How to See the Stunning Natural Phenomenon

Last updated: June 25th, 2021

  • Find a Cruise

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those magical experiences on nearly every traveler’s bucket list due to the surreal way light moves in waves of green color across the nighttime sky.

Aurora Borealis, as it’s officially known, can only be seen above the magnetic pole of the Northern Hemisphere. Your chances of seeing them increase the farther north you are, which in turn makes Iceland an ideal place to try your luck at Northern Lights gazing.

Dreaming about seeing the Northern Lights is easy; figuring out the logistics of viewing those shimmering colors in the nighttime sky aren’t so simple. A Northern Lights cruise takes the stress out of planning, lodging, and even transportation to destinations like Iceland, Alaska, and more.

On Celebrity, cruises to Alaska and Iceland just might yield sightings of Aurora Borealis. That said, even if you don’t see the Northern Lights during your cruise, there’s plenty to fall in love with in these exciting destinations, from incredible dog-sledding competitions to hiking along stunning fjords.

Alaska Cruises to See The Northern Lights

In 2021, our cruises to Alaska will be sailing later than usual, kicking off the season in late July and ending in early October. These exciting seven-night itineraries stop in stunning Alaskan ports, such as Ketchikan and Juneau, and spend a day sailing close to the majestic Dawes Glacier, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers.

One of the benefits of sailing to Alaska later in the year is that it increases the chance of seeing the breathtaking Northern Lights, as these are much more likely to be witnessed during the fall and winter months. If you’re sailing on a 2021 cruise to Alaska , you might even have the chance to admire this natural phenomenon from the comfort of your private Veranda Stateroom or from one of the open-air decks on board.

14-Night Iceland and Ireland Cruise to See the Northern Lights

Get up close to beautiful, picturesque landscapes on an Iceland and Ireland cruise from Southampton, England, which offers 14 nights of pure bliss on Celebrity Silhouette .

Scenic landscape view of Akureyri, Iceland

In Iceland, you’ll stop in Akureyri and overnight in the capital city, Reykjavik. Discover the wonders of Iceland’s nature by hiking along snow-capped mountains, marveling at enormous waterfalls, and exploring gurgling fields of Icelandic lava.

The best Iceland cruise excursions for someone who is hoping to see the Northern Lights takes place in Reykjavik, where you’ll have the unique chance to explore the scientific and cultural significance of aurora borealis at the Northern Lights Center, head outside the city for a chance to see them in person, followed by a jaunt to the small fishing village of Stokkseyri, where you’ll be welcomed with a traditional Icelandic lobster feast.

Alaska Cruisetours to See the Northern Lights

Celebrity shore excursion in Denali National Park during a Northern Lights cruise

Alaska cruisetours are the ideal way to explore the state’s stunning interior and extend your Alaska cruise vacation.

For the opportunity to see the Northern Lights, the Evening Aurora Pursuit is available on Alaska Cruisetours in mid- and late August on Celebrity Millenium. The Evening Aurora Pursuit is an optional land excursion available on different cruise tours from 10 to 13 nights, like:

Alaska Gold Rush Adventure Cruisetour

The 10-Night Alaska Gold Rush Adventure Cruisetour (2A Northbound) will take you deep into the interior of Alaska, where you can explore Gold Rush history. Stay overnight in Fairbanks and explore Denali State Park. You might lose track of time, since the sun shines late into the night.

Majestic Tundra Explorer Cruisetour

If you like to spend quality time in the cities you travel to, the 11-Night Majestic Tundra Explorer Cruisetour (4A Northbound) is ideal because it features two nights in both Denali and Fairbanks. You’ll stay in a cozy lodge and keep an eye out for Alaska’s “Big Five”: caribou, moose, bears, grey wolves, and Dall sheep.

Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Spire Cove located in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska

The 12-Night Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour (6A Northbound) is perfect for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts, and offers even more time in Alaska’s breathtaking national parks like Denali and Kenai Fjords.

The Great Frontier Expedition & Grand Heartland Adventure

Cruisetours like the 13-Night Great Frontier Expedition (8A Northbound) and the 13-Night Grand Heartland Adventure (7A Northbound) show Alaska’s many majestic sides. Meet the eclectic locals in Talkeetna. Discover a wealth of knowledge on indigenous history. Board a glass-domed rail car, called the Wilderness Express, to Fairbanks, and soak up picturesque views every step of the way.

On cruisetours like these, you’ll traverse to towns like Seward, Anchorage, Denali, and tiny Talkeetna . Of course, sightings of the Northern Lights on your cruisetour depend entirely on natural circumstances, relying on weather, darkness, and a bit of magic.

While we can’t guarantee you’ll see the Northern Lights on your cruisetour, we can promise you’ll walk away with a deep appreciation for Alaska’s rugged wilderness, flora, fauna, and rich history.

What month is best to see the Northern Lights?

Night view of Godafoss Waterfall on a Northern Lights cruise

Aurora Borealis is more likely to be seen between September and March. Darkness is essential if you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights during your travels.

Read: Best Time to Cruise Alaska

You’re also more likely to see them if you visit in colder months, as the most brilliant displays occur both in dark and cold environments. Because it’s a scientific phenomenon beyond the comprehension of modern science, you can only truly predict occurrences of the Northern Lights roughly two hours before they happen.

What do I pack for a Northern Lights cruise?

Family during a shore excursion on a Northern Lights cruise

For fall and winter, when sightings of the Northern Lights are more common, layering is key.

A large coat or puffer jacket is helpful, but the true secret to staying warm is layering. Thick wool socks and not airy fabrics (avoid cotton or linen) are important in keeping heat trapped in and closer to the body.

When in doubt, wear one more layer than you think you need. Remember: you can always take off another layer, but if you didn’t bring one to begin with, you might find yourself battling the cold.

Beanies, hats, hoods, gloves, and hand warmers are all good ideas, too.

Best time for travel iceland's magical northern lights.

While just about any month is great to visit Iceland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Winter: If snowy landscapes and the northern lights are what you’re after, then winter is the prime season to visit Iceland. Sure, it's cold and dark, and winter storms and road closures may be common, but with welcoming celebrations and festivities, and cozy coffeehouses, t's easy to warm up to Icelandic hospitality.

Spring: In spring, you can expect more hours of sunlight and thawing snow and ice, allowing you to explore the beautiful landscapes. In less-crowded March, you can still catch some of the winter activities, or even glimpse the northern lights.

Fall: Fall is a great time to see the northern lights in Iceland. September days can be bright and sunny, but the evening sky is dark enough for a beautiful aurora display. The temperature is slightly colder, but winter has yet to settle in, so the only snow you'll see is at the tops of the mountains in the distance. Iceland’s fall foliage puts on its own show, whether you’re walking in Reykjavik or hiking in the countryside.

Trip Highlights

This year’s report:  Wow.  We had no fewer than FOUR clear nights with the aurora blazing overhead!  Solar Max is definitely producing!

On this tour you will visit Iceland’s most iconic sites including waterfalls such as the colossal Gullfoss, the enchanting Seljalandsfoss, and the breathtaking Skogafoss. We will explore Thingvellir National Park and walk through the valley where the tectonic plates are drifting apart, tracing the steps of Iceland’s early settlers where brutal Viking-age justice was carried out and the Althingi parliament was founded.  You will watch in awe as the geyser Strokkur launches boiling water into the air in the Geyser geothermal area.  You will behold the striking basalt columns, supernatural black sand, and immense sea stacks of Reynisfjara on the south coast’s black sand beaches. Included in the itinerary are visits to two impressive hot spring spas.  First, the newly opened but already well-known Sky Lagoon which opens out over the North Atlantic and, later in the tour, an afternoon luxuriating in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. Starting and ending in Reykjavik, you will have time to explore this unique and friendly northern capital from our centrally located hotel within easy walking distance of the majority of popular sights.

After breakfast, you will take a full day tour of some of the best known natural phenomena surrounding Reykjavik. From spouting geysers, massive tumbling waterfalls, and ancient volcanoes, this excursion will introduce you to the world-renowned pristine natural beauty in the heart of Iceland’s Southern Region, stopping at some of Iceland’s most iconic sites.

Þingvellir National Park is an attraction of great historical, geological and cultural significance. Located in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, the UNESCO designated world heritage site is also the birthplace of the Althing—Iceland’s parliament founded in 930 AD—where the nation’s most powerful leaders would meet to decide on legislation and carry out brutal Viking-age justice.  The tour continues across an area of picturesque scenery to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. Once there, you can take several paths around the two tiers of cascading water to explore several vantage points.

Next, you will visit the home of “The Great Geysir”, a geysir that is the actual origin of the word “geysir”, and is an area with bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colorful algae deposits. Although Geysir itself has become dormant, there is great excitement when Strokkur geysir blasts boiling water high up into the air every 3-7 minutes!

After visiting the Golden Circle highlights you will stop at Friðheimar greenhouse, a geothermally heated operation that demonstrates how Icelanders are now able to grow fresh vegetables in their harsh environment. They also have many Icelandic horses that you will be able to see close up as well as very creative tomato-based refreshments.

You will wrap up this very full day with a stop at The Commonwealth Farm.  This is a site of interest to see how people lived in Iceland until as recently as the 1970’s! The reconstructed farm   is   based   on   the excavated farmhouse Stöng from the Commonwealth Era in Iceland and   provides   visitors   with an opportunity   to   study the   buildings   of Icelandic ancestors   and   learn   about   their   background   and   daily   life .  The excavated farm Stöng is  believed to have   been   destroyed   in the   Hekla   eruption   in the year   1104.

Overnight near Hella in a great dark-sky location so that if wether permits, our chances to see the northern lights is optimized!

After breakfast, you will stop at a stable close to the hotel and enjoy a visit with some of Iceland’s famous horses and enjoy a short demonstration of the unique gaits that make these horses distinct.  Following the show, you will travel along Iceland’s southern coast through lush farmlands with the rugged mountains, glaciers (including famous Eyjafjallajökull), and volcanoes of the interior on one side and the Atlantic ocean on the other.

You will stop to see Seljalandsfoss waterfall, whose water originates under Eyjafjallajökull’s glacier, cascading from the highlands.  Visitors to Seljalandsfoss can walk behind the falls into a small cave if the weather is warm and there is no ice. You will also visit Skógafoss, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland and familiar for its many on-screen appearances in popular movies/videos.  Just outside the town of Vík í Mýrdal (or just Vík to the locals), you will visit the soaring basalt rock formation known as Reynisdrangar and the black sand beach of Reynisfjara.

Before returning to your hotel you will see the LAVA exhibit in Hella that includes an impressive live demonstration of lava and its characteristics.

Evening opportunity to view Northern Lights if weather permits. Overnight near Hella.

After breakfast and the hotel checkout you will visit the Seltún geothermal area, one of the most striking landscapes in Iceland. Steam dominates a view filled with volcanic vents, fumaroles, mud pots, and boiling hot springs. The surrounding hills are painted in earthy colors of golden brown, red, pink, blue, yellow, white and grey.  Following Seltún you will make a short stop at the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant to see the technology behind harnessing geothermal energy.  The plant, which provides Reykjavik with most of its electricity and hot water, is also piloting an innovative direct air capture project that captures 50 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year and injects it into the ground, where it literally turns to stone.

After lunch, you will visit the Blue Lagoon and relax in its remarkable waters. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions and considered by many to be an intrinsic part of the Iceland experience. Breathtaking scenery, ultra modern facilities, and an impressive track record in healing are why the Blue Lagoon draws visitors from all corners of the world to return time and time again.

On your return to Reykjavik you will enjoy a farewell dinner and an evening opportunity to view Northern Lights if weather permits. Overnight Reykjavik.

Information on vaccinations and other health precautions, such as safe food and water precautions and insect bite protection, may be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747) or via the  CDC website .

Please note that most countries have very strict entry/exit requirements for minors (under the age of 18 years old), especially minors traveling with only one parent.  Please review the requirements before choosing to travel with a minor.

Room Sharing

If you are traveling alone, you may save quite a bit of money by opting to share a room. We will match solo travelers of the same gender so that they can share a double occupancy room with two beds. We will do our best to match travelers but if we cannot find a match for you then you will be required to pay the single occupancy price.

Historical weather prospects in Iceland: Statistically, the chance of clear, mostly clear, or partly cloudy skies is at least 40% throughout September.  The weather is usually dry (average precipitation is 67mm) and the average temperature is 7.4°C (45.3°F) but it can go as high as 10-15°C (50-59°F).  Wind is frequently the main issue and wind/rain gear is essential.  If you don’t block the wind it will feel very cold.

What to Wear

We recommend bringing warm clothes and being prepared for everything, the weather is very unpredictable and it can rain, be sunny and windy, sometimes at the same time. Layers are the key as you want to be able to strip off clothes when it is warm and put them back on when it gets colder. Links here are the same as those on our “ packing suggestions ” page and are Amazon affiliate links.

  • Hiking boots – You will be traveling around the country and walking outside.  You need good waterproof hiking shoes that will keep you warm.
  • Base layer – Warm layers under the clothes might be the best thing you bring to Iceland. We recommend wearing long wool or thermal underwear, you can buy it in outdoor clothing stores in Iceland.
  • Fleece or wool – An Icelandic wool sweater or fleece is a must. Icelandic wool sweaters can be bought all over the country in local stores.
  • Parka or water and windproof jacket – Usually you don’t need a parka in September but, if you have space in your suitcase, why not bring it? A water and windproof jacket over the wool/fleece sweater is essential.
  • Water and windproof pants  – It is windy in Iceland and it rains so bring the pants.
  • Hats , gloves and warm socks – Bring at least two sets of everything, a lighter pair and a thick one as well. Consider the wind which can get through a single knit layer easily. Again, if you need to upgrade while in Iceland, there are stores that carry these items everywhere.
  • Swimsuit – You are going to want to relax in the warm swimming pools or hot springs after a long day outside. It is possible to rent a swimsuit at the spas if you forget yours.

Iceland Northern Lights Tours 2023, 2024 | Escorted Iceland Tours

Iceland northern lights tour packages 2023 and 2024.

Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are only visible in the northern most parts of the world during a certain time of the year. Iceland is actually only one of two countries in the world whose capital cities can see the Northern Lights!  Because of this phenomenon’s prominence throughout the country, some tour operators like Collette, CIE, Insight and Globus have tours that are centered around witnessing the Iceland Northern Lights.  Colette’s tour, Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights , even has travelers take a Northern Lights cruise through the Faxafloi Bay.

DAY 1 23 Mar 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 5 PM

Just a short train journey from the heart of bustling London, Tilbury offers the best sights of the city as well as attractions local to the cruise port. Explore Tilbury Fort which played a vital role in the battle against the Spanish Armada, and discover the 1127 Rochester Castle which plays host to numerous events and markets throughout the year. Finally, for a unique sightseeing tour, take a short ferry ride from Tilbury to Gravesend.

Thing to do

Tilbury Fort is an artillery fort on the north bank of the River Thames. It was formerly known as the Thermitage Bulwark and the West Tilbury Blockhouse. From the 16th century until the Second World War, it secured London's seaward approach. The first fort was constructed here by Henry VIII, and Queen Elizabeth I famously gathered her soldiers nearby to combat the Armada threat. With its network of moats and bastioned outworks, the current fort is perhaps the greatest example of its kind in England.

Thing to do

A short journey away from the port lies the Coalhouse Fort Park. Dating back to the 1860s, this fascinating coastal defence building holds an array of events throughout the year and is run solely by volunteers.

Thing to do

Located just across the river in nearby Gravesend, the Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara is a Sikh temple which offers guided tours. Extraordinary in its architecture, it’s an impressive building featuring 5 domes, hand crafted marble and stonework. It took inspiration from the iconic Golden Temple at Amritsar.

Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

DAY 3 25 Mar 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 3 PM

The biggest town in Orkney, Kirkwall is a quaint yet bustling Scottish town that can easily be enjoyed by foot. From the St. Magnus Cathedral to the Bishop's and Earl's Palaces and the Orkney Museum, history lovers can learn more about this charming town. Head to the colourful harbour to admire the sea views, or explore the two beaches to truly admire Scotland's beautiful coastline.

Thing to do

Opened in 1968 and run by the Orkney Islands Council, the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland, formerly known as Tankerness House Museum, chronicles the history of the Orkney Islands from the Stone Age through the Picts and Vikings to the present.

Thing to do

If you love whiskey, learning the history of it and how it’s made, take a trip to the Highland Park Whiskey Distillery. A 18th century, malt-whiskey distillery, you’ll find out all about the drink with a knowledgeable guide.

Thing to do

St. Magnus Cathedral, also known as the "Light in the North," was built in 1137 by the Viking earl Rognvald in memory of his uncle St. Magnus, who was crucified in Kirkwall, the main city of the Orkney Islands.

Tórshavn

DAY 4 26 Mar 2023 Time at Port: from 9 AM to 6 PM

The Faroe Islands' capital, Tórshavn is located on Streymoy Island. It is well-known for its little peninsula-sized ancient town, Tinganes, which is adorned with wooden cottages with grass roofs. Tórshavn Cathedral, which was restored in the 19th century, the Nordic House and the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands are all popular attractions to visit whilst in Torshavn. Established in the 13th century, throughout the years it’s grown to become one of the most inhabited areas in the Faroe Islands, as well as being a very popular tourist hotspot.

Thing to do

A well-known art gallery with ongoing displays of Faroese artwork in Torshavn, the National Gallery of The Faroe Islands was founded in 1989, and consists of two galleries: one for ancient arts and one named Listaskáli. The museum is situated close to the Nordic House and was designed by prominent architect J.P. Gregoriussen.

Thing to do

A significant institution, the Nordic House plays a crucial role in portraying the island's culture and history. Presenting art from across the region, it makes for a fascinating visit whilst stopping off in Torshavn.

Thing to do

In the historic district of Torshavn lies Tórshavn Cathedral. The second-oldest church in the Faroe Islands, it was built in 1788, with a white exterior and slate roof. One of the town's top draws, like many others in the Faroe islands, it's a Evangelical-Lutheran National Church.

Reykjavik - Overnight onboard

DAY 6-7 28 Mar 2023 Time at Port: from 9 AM to 7 PM

Home to some of the most striking buildings you'll ever see, Reykjavik is a small city that packs a powerful punch. Take a dip in one of the many geothermal pools to truly relax, or enjoy a refreshing hike in the great outdoors. A visit to the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church is a must for architecture enthusiasts, though a simple walking tour around the city will see you discovering stunning designs and street art. Don't forget to leave room for the outstanding local cuisine, from fresh seafood to grilled meats.

Thing to do

Step back in time in this fascinating museum located in the heart of the city. Built in 1863, it’s home to a variety of exhibitions showcasing the enthralling history of Iceland, from its maritime past to artefacts capturing the life of original settlers within the country.

Thing to do

Situated in the centre of the city, Harpa is an extraordinary concert hall that features a distinct design with coloured glass surrounding its exterior. Host to a range of concerts, conferences, plays, opera performances and more, it’s a must-see when in the city.

Thing to do

Arguably one of the most beloved attractions in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon. Located less than 45 minutes from the city, it has a geothermal spa that’s bright blue. Onsite there is also a cafe, a massage room, restaurants and more to enjoy throughout your time there.

Invergordon

DAY 10 01 Apr 2023 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 5 PM

A port town in the Scottish Highlands, Invergordon sits in the historic Ross and Cromarty region. Once a Royal Navy Dockyard, the town's maritime history can be discovered at the Naval Museum and Heritage Centre. The Mural Trail gives visitors a chance to see the town's more artistic side, while Invergordon is also the perfect place to start a tour into the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Thing to do

These picturesque grounds used to lead up to a beautiful 13th century castle, which was destroyed during a fire. The castle was replaced in the 19th century by a mansion, which has now also been demolished. However, the castle grounds still provide a tranquil walk, filled with flora and fauna.

Thing to do

Covered with a distinctive mural, the Invergordon Museum is a centrally located attraction which showcases the naval history of the area. A local run, small museum, it’s the perfect attraction for those that love to learn about maritime history, or those who simply want to discover more about the surroundings.

Thing to do

A peaceful and relaxing walk awaits at the Saltburn Community Woodland. Although this is a little walk away from the port, the pretty flowers and trees you’ll see along the woodland are well worth the effort.

Stokksnes, Iceland Lupine Flowers by the River

FIND YOUR NORTH STAR

Iceland cruises.

Discover a northern paradise where ice meets mountains and nature abounds.

Cruise to Iceland, where you can visit the enchanting cities of Reykjavik and Akureyri and marvel at the country's rough and unusual natural wonders. With a population of only 123,300 people, Iceland's capital and largest city, Reykjavik, is home to colorful houses, a bustling arts scene and centuries of history. For a glimpse into the northern past, check out the Settlement Exhibition, a combination of an archaeological ruin and museum based around a 10th-century house. Then, commune with nature at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa built on a lava field and heated with geothermal energy. Pamper yourself with mud masks and massages while wading in the soothing waters. Even though Akureyri has only 18,000 residents, it's called the Capital of the North for a reason. Head there to warm up in the steaming thermal pool at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, Eyjafjordur.

Traditional Icelandic Kjotsupa

BECOME A LAMB STEWARD

Most Icelandic cuisine is based on fish, lamb, dairy and root vegetables. Stop by Icelandic Fish and Chips in Reykjavik to find the best Icelandic meat stew, made with lamb, potatoes, carrots and herbs. If you're brave enough, try hakarl (fermented shark) — but be sure to wash it down with a local craft beer from Lady Brewery.

Iceland, Akureyri Botanical Garden

FEEL THE FLORA

Because the terrain tends to be barren and rocky, Iceland isn't particularly known for its plants and trees. At Akureyri's Lystigardurinn, the northernmost botanical garden in the world, however, you'll be able to spot 430 native species of colorful, wild arctic flowers in one spot.

Reykjavik Hallgrimskirkja Iceland

Explore the country's past in one of the museums, or check out the works of contemporary designers, who prove Iceland is the definition of cool.

Icelandic Traditional Wool Sweaters

DESIGNING ICELAND

If you're searching for the best shopping spots in Iceland, head to Laugavegur, also known as "The Wash Road." Reykjavik's hippest shopping street offers designer clothes, artisan wools and design-driven home goods. You can also go to the excellent Kolaportio Flea Market in Akureyri, where you'll find many shops with trendy local designer brands, fun souvenirs and high-fashion labels.

Reykjavik, Iceland Lutheran Parish Church

ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS

Located just southeast of Reykjavik's city center, the Expressionist-style church known as Hallgrimskirkja looms over the streets, mirroring the mountains and glaciers beyond. Enjoy panoramic views from the 75-meter-high spire. Or head to Akureyri's basalt church, Akureyrarkirkja, which also dominates the skyline with its striking futuristic facade. You'll marvel at the shiparagraphCopy that hangs from the ceiling, reflecting the Nordic tradition of giving offerings to protect loved ones at sea.

Akureyri, Iceland Old Farmhouse

HOBBIT HIDEAWAYS

When in Akureyri, make sure you visit the nearby village of Laufas, where you'll find beautiful, picturesque turf-roofed farmhouses built in the 1860s. They're a window into how Icelanders once lived and may remind you of the hobbit houses in "The Lord of the Rings."

Iceland, Skogafoss Waterfall

THIS LAND OF ICE WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY

Step aboard a cruise to Iceland and discover the enchanting cities of Reykjavik and Akureyri with their colorful houses and relaxing thermal pools. Climb glacial mountains, watch the Northern Lights, or dine on fermented shark. You'll be swept away in Iceland.

Reykjavik, Iceland Harbor Skyline

ATLANTIC ARRIVAL

Arrive in Iceland via a transatlantic getaway , but don't forget to make some tropical stops as well. Try local delicacies, go snorkeling or see the natural marvels of the great European cities and Caribbean ports . Iceland is just one magnificent stop along this gorgeous route.

Iceland Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

CITY CRUISIN'

Cruise straight to Iceland and watch the cities of Akureyri and Reykjavik come alive. Stroll around the city streets, or go hiking in the surrounding mountains. Sample the regional cuisine, have a drink with the locals and relax in one of many hot volcanic spas.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Northern Light, Midnight Sun

From its natural wonders to its storied history, Iceland offers something for everyone.

You'll be able to see the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, from early September to the end of April, but visiting in the summer offers you the benefits of the Midnight Sun, the 24-hour sunlight that shines over the country. Be prepared for crowds, though, in the summer months.

While nearly everyone in Iceland speaks English, you'll pleasantly surprise the locals by speaking a few words in their language. Say "takk" to thank a local, or ask someone if they speak English by saying, "talarðu ensku?" (pronounced "ta-lar-thu en-sku"). Don't be afraid to immerse yourself in the Icelandic culture.

CUISINE TEMPTING TREATS

Both the capital Reykjavik and the Akureyri have a large variety of restaurants, where you can eat local or international dishes. Icelandic cuisine is largely based on dairy products, fish, lamb, root vegetables and herbs, so get ready for a hearty meal.

Icelandic Fish Stew

LADLE IT ON

Iceland's cold waters produce top-quality seafood, and one of the country's signature ways to enjoy the fruits of the sea is fiskisupa, or fish stew. Made with cod or haddock, potatoes, butter, milk and herbs, it's a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs way to enjoy the local bounty.

Iceland Hot Dogs

NOT YOUR AVERAGE HOT DOG

Made from mostly lamb, hot dogs are the national street food of Iceland — you won't have to look far to find one! They're typically made with a mix of local, Iceland-raised pork, beef and lamb. Slather yours with pylsusinnep, a sweet brown mustard, or remoulade, a tangy combination of mayo, mustard, capers and herbs.

Icelandic Traditional Food

FERMENTED FAVORITES

Since not a lot grows in Iceland during much of the year, the local cuisine has developed a strong traditional of preserving foods through fermentation. If you're brave enough, try hakarl, the national dish of fermented shark. If you're not feeling uparagraphCopy for the challenge, try herring pickled in vinegar and served a top a slice of dense rye bread.

Northern Lights Cruise

15 March 2024

Iceland's Land of the Northern Lights

Ambition sails from london tilbury.

Mar 15, 2024

From £1009 - Save £170

This is no trick of the light: the Aurora Borealis is one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles in all nature as the night sky comes alive in vivid swathes of pink and green. We’ll take you to the beautiful and unspoilt island of Iceland, with its colourful, cosmopolitan capital of Reykjavik, in search of this elusive and fabled phenomenon. Along the way, you will visit Invergordon and the remote and tranquil archipelagos of Orkney and the Faroe Islands to complete an unforgettable itinerary.

CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS

Kirkwall is home to the magnificent Viking influenced St. Magnus Cathedral and numerous Neolithic standing stones. Ancient traditions live on in craft workshops producing fascinating keepsakes, so this is a unique place to shop.

Tórshavn is one of the world’s smallest and most charming capitals. You’ll particularly relish your time in historic Tinganes, where traditional red wooden buildings with turf roofs cluster on a narrow peninsula.

Part-old Norse, part-modern city, Iceland’s capital is both quirky and cosmopolitan. Brightly coloured houses create unique streetscapes, whilst further afield vast lava fields, bubbling mud pools, crashing waterfalls and spouting geysers will fire your imagination.

Invergordon

Situated on the shores of the deep Cromarty Firth, amidst the natural wonders of the Scottish Highlands, Invergordon is a key port with an important naval history stretching back through both World Wars.

The Federal Trade Commission voted 3-2 to ban the use of most noncompete agreements on Tuesday. ‘The sky exploded’: Stunning video of Northern Lights captured amid volcanic eruption in Iceland

A volcano chaser covering an eruption in southwestern Iceland captured a magical nighttime waltz between the Northern Lights and spurring lava that lit up the sky above the Reykjanes Peninsula this week.

Marco Di Marco was able to get drone footage of the shimmering ribbons of blue and green light and the powerful eruption — now in its 29th day — Monday night into Tuesday local time following powerful solar flares. He later created a time-lapse video of nature’s grand spectacle.

“I’ve filmed the aurora dancing above this eruption four times since March, but this last one was by far the strongest and the brightest,” Di Marco told the Globe. “I knew that the odds were there to see it again, but I didn’t expect such a strong aurora display. It’s hard to describe the feeling of witnessing a combination like this when two strong natural events unfold together in the same location.”

The Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, occur when energetic particles (electrons) from the sun in the solar wind collide with the upper parts of the Earth’s atmosphere, causing light to emerge.

Di Marco said views of the Northern Lights and eruption appeared as if “the sky exploded” just a few minutes after they arrived.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano, located north of Grindavik, a fishing town of 3,400 people, and about 30 miles from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, has erupted multiple times since December in an area known as the Sundhnúkur crater. The volcanic eruptions began as a series of small earthquakes before a fissure 2½ miles long opened and began spewing lava and forcing evacuations.

Fagradalsfjall was dormant for about 6,000 years before coming to life in March 2021 , according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Iceland is known for being volcanically active, with 32 volcanic sites.

Di Marco said he captured the video, which has now been shared around the world, after sunset in Iceland.

“The aurora started very strongly as soon as the sky became dark, around 11 p.m. and it lasted until late night,” he said.

The Best Time to Cruise to Alaska

Alaska's astounding beauty and vast wilderness are unlike any other destination in the U.S. – and even in the world. While you can plan land-based trips to the state, many of Alaska's majestic snowcapped mountains, pristine forests, glacial waterways and abundant wildlife are in remote locations, only reachable by plane or by boat. That's just one of the many reasons why Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you're ready to stop dreaming and start planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land, here are tips on the best times to cruise Alaska.

Best Overall Time: Shoulder Seasons

Best time for warmer weather, best time for wildlife viewing, best time for salmon fishing, best time for the northern lights, best time for shore excursions.

View of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay from the side of a cruise ship.

If you want to score a deal and have fewer crowds, travel during the shoulder seasons: May and September. In these months, cruise fares are typically lower and ships are not as full, offering more cabin availability. However, with changes in the global climate bringing more moderate temperatures to Alaska, and the cruise season now extending into April and October, cruisers can also expect to find deals in April and October. There will be fewer sailings to choose from, but you may find lower pricing and avoid the peak-season crowds on the ship and in the ports.

In addition, select shore excursions may be available at a discount in the spring and fall. If you're planning on exploring Alaska on your own before or after your cruise, you'll also find cheaper hotel rates at the beginning or end of the cruise season.

Alaska's weather can change dramatically, especially the further north you go, no matter the month or season. While the weather may not be as predictable in April as in the middle of summer, Alaska can be beautiful in springtime with temperatures in the mid-40s, according to Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, an Alaska Native-owned port in Hoonah and a port of call in Southeast Alaska. Hickman says there are long stretches of sunny days and crisp, clear evenings, offering the opportunity for late-season viewing of the northern lights . He also adds that April is one of the favorite times of year for local Alaskans.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska in April, Norwegian Cruise Line has a few options, including weekly sailings on Norwegian Bliss beginning April 6. The line also offers Alaska itineraries through the end of October. Other lines sailing the extended season in Alaska in late April include Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise Line , UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions.

If you prefer to travel in the fall, early October temperatures are usually in the 50s, while the end of the month brings snow in the higher elevations. The days are longer and there are no crowds, so it may be an ideal time to visit if you're not interested in the summer outdoor experiences. Norwegian, Holland America and Seabourn Cruise Line offer sailings in October.

If you'd prefer warmer weather for your cruise, the summer season in Alaska runs from mid-May to mid-September. During that period, daytime temperatures typically range from 60 to 80 degrees, though they can drop into the 40s overnight. You can expect to have between 16 to 24 hours of daylight in the warmer season. May is considered the driest month, with around a 25% chance of precipitation, but the rain becomes more frequent throughout the summer.

Alaska.org, a website run by local Alaskans that provides travel information and recommendations, advises that the best time to visit in summer is from June 15 to July 15. This 30-day period is regarded as the peak season for warm, dry weather – and it's the perfect time for outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing and hiking. If you want to experience the most "midnight sun," plan to cruise a few weeks before or after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – which falls on June 20 in 2024.

Come September, the days are generally shorter, rainier and cooler – but not always. You might get lucky with some unseasonably warm days amid the beautiful fall foliage ; as a bonus, September also means no bugs and fewer crowds.

If you have school-age children, you'll probably need to travel midsummer, during peak season. However, if you're flexible on dates, there's really no bad time to visit this magical destination. Mountain peaks shrouded in clouds or misty days cruising Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in late April are as beautiful as sunny days hiking through Tongass National Forest or whale watching on an excursion out of Icy Strait Point in July.

Orca breaching in Seward, Alaska.

According to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, one of the top destinations on the Inside Passage itinerary, wildlife viewing is possible year-round, especially if you have your binoculars at hand. When you're not watching for turquoise ice calving in the bay from the glaciers, you might see humpback whales as long as 65 feet or black and brown bears up to 10 feet tall – as well as orcas, harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, sea lions, seabirds, and bald eagles soaring overhead. And that's just what you can view from the ship.

During cruises through the park, rangers board the ships to offer commentary and information about the marine and terrestrial wildlife. They also help spot whales or other animals along the way. One of the highlights while cruising slowly through the park is to go outside on the bow of the ship – or even out onto your veranda – to listen to the incredible silence of this otherworldly place. You may hear nothing at all, or perhaps you'll be treated to the sounds of birds in the distance or the swoosh from a whale's blowhole before it dives down below the water's surface.

It's possible to view certain animals and marine life throughout the year, according to Hickman. "Whale sightings are consistent from May through September, with fewer occurring in April and October as they migrate from or to Hawaii for the winter," he says, adding: "Even on a foggy day when you can't see the whales, you can still hear them and feel their presence – and that's almost as incredible as seeing them from a ship or along the coastline."

If you're interested in spotting brown bears, here is Hickman's advice: "Bear sightings in the spring will depend on the snowpack and when they are leaving hibernation. This year we had very good bear viewing along the Spasski River starting in May when the coastal brown bears emerged from hibernation."

He adds, "They feed on the grass of the valley and eat skunk cabbage roots in May and early June. As the berries start to emerge in June, it holds many of the same bears, and as we get into mid-July, the salmon start heading upstream. There is a constant food source from May through September at Spasski. Many of the other bear viewing areas do not have the same features we have, and it leads to people thinking that bears are only around when fish are in the rivers."

Chichagof Island – the location of Hoonah and Icy Strait Point – was given the nickname "Bear Island" by National Geographic. The island boasts one to two brown bears per square mile, making it one of the largest brown bear populations in the world. Hickman says you're nearly guaranteed to see bears on one of Icy Strait Point's bear-watching tours. Icy Point Strait also offers whale watching adventures and other treks into the wilderness.

Alaska.org points to May through September as the best time for wildlife viewing, though you can spot some animals year-round, like moose or orcas. The website also advises that fly-in bear viewing starts in May but is at its best in July.

Alaska Brown Bear fishing for Sockeye Salmon at Brooks River and Waterfalls, Katmai National Park, Alaska.

If you are an avid angler – or just want to watch the bears fish for their supper – then visit Alaska during the peak salmon runs, from May to September. King salmon season begins in May and goes through the end of July. The silver salmon run lasts from July up until the end of November. Red salmon are available between mid-June and mid-August, while you can catch pink and chum salmon in the brief window from mid-July to mid-August.

If you prefer halibut or just want to get out on the ocean, the best time for this wild Pacific species is from May to September. You can also seek out many other river and ocean species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char and northern pike. Cruise lines offer fishing excursions, or you can arrange for a private or group charter in an Alaskan town like Ketchikan.

If you want to see brown bears during the salmon run, book a bear-viewing excursion in one of the ports, such as Icy Strait Point. Or, extend your trip by combining a visit to Katmai National Park and Preserve and the renowned Brooks River with a stay at Brooks Lodge. Brooks Falls is the site for iconic photos of bears catching salmon that are jumping over the falls, and you may be able to view the bears feasting in salmon season when the property is open, from June through mid-September. The lodge is accessible by floatplane from King Salmon. You can also add a flyover tour during your stay to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area in southern Alaska transformed by ash from the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption.

Northern lights above Alaskan mountains.

Aurora season – the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska – runs from mid-August to mid-April. While some passengers cruising the Inside Passage may catch a glimpse of the phenomenon in late summer and early fall, it's not guaranteed. As southeast Alaska typically has more precipitation and clouds since it's a temperate rainforest, you likely won't find optimal conditions for aurora viewing here.

Your chances to see the lights are better the further north you go, so you may want to look at booking a cruisetour: a land and sea package that's usually offered by some of the major cruise lines from May through September. These combined trips generally include the cruise, overnight accommodations in lodges, railway journeys and motorcoach travel between destinations.

With these tours, you'll be able to visit the vast landscape of Alaska, where you can explore cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks or spend time in Denali National Park and Preserve – and you'll have a better chance to view the northern lights. Lines that offer cruisetours include Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises , Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Since 2024 is projected to be one of the best years to view the aurora borealis in Alaska, you might want to extend your trip to venture above the Arctic Circle or into Alaska's interior for a prime viewing opportunity. Fairbanks and the Arctic region are under the auroral oval, which is where the northern lights activity is concentrated. You can watch the forecast for the aurora borealis online at Explore Fairbanks' Aurora Tracker and the Geophysical Institute's Aurora Forecast .

Aerial of Ketchikan, Alaska, on a sunny day.

Some of the excursions offered on an Alaskan cruise may be the most expensive tours you've seen on a ship, but they're also probably some of the coolest things you've ever thought about doing while on vacation.

Note that the probability of a tour being canceled for weather is almost the same for all tours offered between April and October, as the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. Some of the more extreme tours, however, may not be available early or late in the season. If you want the best chance for optimal weather, consider the advice from Alaska.org and book your cruise between mid-June and mid-July.

If you're looking at splurging on a bucket list adventure while in Skagway – like Alaska Shore Tours' flightseeing helicopter adventure, which includes a dog-sledding experience on a glacier – you should check to make sure it's available the month you'll be cruising. This particular tour may not be open for booking before May or after September due to the conditions for the sled dogs.

Another over-the-top excursion dependent on optimal weather conditions is the Heli-Hike and Rail Adventure that begins in Skagway. This tour includes a helicopter ride from town that flies over glaciers and mountains, then drops you off for a roughly 5-mile guided hike to view Laughton Glacier and learn about the natural history of the area. After the hike, you'll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad at Glacier Station for the scenic journey through the mountains back to Skagway.

If you're interested in the Misty Fjords Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan, this thrilling ride is also best on a clear day. This Alaskan bush plane tour soars over the Misty Fjords National Monument, which has more than 2 million acres of pristine lakes, waterfalls, ancient forests and snowcapped mountains.

Tours that include activities like mountain climbing or navigating suspension bridges might also be best when done on a sunny day. The prime time for wildlife viewing and fishing, as mentioned above, will depend on what animals you're interested in seeing and which species of fish you want to catch.

The ship's excursion desk, local guides or tour providers can offer the best advice on how to plan your activities. No matter which tours you opt to take, be prepared for the ever-changing weather patterns by wearing layers – and make sure to bring a waterproof rain jacket. Before booking, you should check the individual tour operator's cancellation and refund policy.

The Bottom Line

Cruise ships dock in Skagway, Alaska.

If you're flexible as to when you can travel to Alaska, you may be able to take advantage of lower pricing, travel incentives and added perks in the shoulder seasons – and you'll have fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.

If your goal is to view wildlife, then most of the cruise season, especially from May to September, will offer ample opportunities to see bears, humpbacks whales, bald eagles and other amazing animals – depending on the itinerary and excursions you choose. You'll also be able to catch Alaska's prized salmon throughout much of the cruise season.

And if extreme adventures are going to be the highlight of your vacation, then be sure to check with the tour providers to make sure your top picks are offered when you're planning to travel. Not all tour providers operate the full seven months of the season.

No matter when you decide to visit, a cruise to The Great Land will be one of the most memorable vacations of your lifetime.
