Pizza Tower (Video Game)

  • View history

Pizza Tower is a 2D platformer developed by Tour de Pizza. It is a spiritual successor to the Wario Land series of games featuring action-packed gameplay, a unique over-exaggerated low-resolution art style akin to cartoons like Ren & Stimpy , Rocko's Modern Life , Cow and Chicken , I am Weasel , CatDog , Courage the Cowardly Dog , Ed, Edd N Eddy and Spongebob Squarepants as well as French comics such as Concombre Masqué , and a just-as-unique 16-bit soundtrack .

Pizza Tower mainly follows Peppino Spaghetti , a struggling Italian pizza chef climbing the titular Pizza Tower on a quest to stop Pizzaface from blowing up his pizzeria with a laser at the top of the tower. Gustavo , an adventurer, assists Peppino in his quest.

Gameplay [ ]

The game has the player take control of Peppino, as he navigates through multiple large levels, collecting pizza toppings of various sizes and defeating enemies to score points. Unlike many other action games of this caliber, he is immune to death, normally only losing 50 points when hit.

Small toppings and Pizza Blocks are normally worth 10 points, while large toppings and Pizza Blocks are normally worth 100.

Additionally, defeating an enemy starts a combo. This combo is maintained through collecting toppings and defeating even more enemies, the latter increasing the combo by 1. Points gained from enemies increase by 5 as it goes higher. If a combo runs out, the player is awarded points depending on the size of the combo, along with a ranking: Lame (x1); Cheesy (x5); Not Bad but Not Great Either (x10); Getting Somewhere! (x15); Nice, Good Job (x20); Cheflike (x25) Brutal! (x30); Evil (x35); Unclean (x40) Disturbing (x45); Twisted (x50); Psychotic (x55); Ill-willed (x60); Crushing (x65); Funny! (x70); or Unfunny (x75). Combos from x80 and higher repeat the rankings, but with a Very in front, so x80 is Very Lame, x85 is Very Cheesy, and so on.

His moveset consists of a jump, crouch, crawl and body slam, which can break bricks from a tall height. Peppino can also lunge forward in order to break purple bricks or grab enemies and objects. When something is in his grasp, he can carry it around as he pleases. Pressing the button again has him perform a powerful finishing blow that sends them flying forward, or upward if up is held while performing the attack. Pressing down while in midair has him perform a piledriver. He can safely drop whatever he's holding by pressing down while planted on the ground.

Peppino's signature maneuver is a continuous dash, used to smash purple bricks in his path and chip away at enemies, along with making longer jumps and running up walls. Holding down while dashing allows him to roll under tight gaps. Building up enough momentum has Peppino go at max speed, indicated by green and red afterimages following behind him. When at max speed, he can smash grey metal bricks and instantly defeat oncoming enemies, disarming themselves as he approaches. Pressing and holding up while at max speed has Peppino perform a Super Jump, which sends him flying upwards until he hits a ceiling or cancels it by pressing the Grab button.

The player can also taunt, striking a humorous pose as momentum is halted for a split second. This may seem useless at first, but charging up a big enough combo has electricity particles circle around Peppino, indicating the player can use the Super Taunt by taunting while holding up. This clears the screen of enemies instantly. Taunting is also used for parrying oncoming projectiles and enemy attacks when timed correctly.

Along with these moves, Peppino has the ability to transform from interactions with special enemies and parts of the environment, regularly used for defeating Stupid Rats . These include donning a heavy knight suit to build momentum off downward slopes, setting his mouth on fire to destroy TNT, or being pressed into a pizza box to jump almost infinitely and glide through the air. Coming in contact with a Priest lifts Peppino of the transformation, awarding him 500 points once only.

At the end of every level is a Pillar John , which starts a countdown upon being destroyed. The player must then race back to the beginning of the stage before time runs out. However, the player can run past the exit and warp back to where John was destroyed for a second lap of the escape, if they so choose. This is known as Pizza Time .

If the player fails to escape in time, Pizzaface will appear to chase the player, if they are caught, they are booted out of the stage, losing all of their current level progress. Otherwise, reaching the exit takes the player to a results screen, revealing their final rank for the level based on the number of points accumulated: D (Awful), C (Bad), B (OK), A (Nice) or S (Perfect). Collecting enough points for an S rank, completing all of the Secret Eye bonus rooms, obtaining the level's respective secret item and completing Lap 2 all while maintaining one long combo throughout the entire stage awards the player with a P rank instead. This rank is needed for 101% completion.

Each level features three additional tasks outside of finishing the level normally. In need of rescuing are the five Toppins , small pizza topping creatures trapped inside cages usually placed slightly off the beaten path. Each Toppin saved awards the player 1000 points. Three Secret Eyes are well-hidden throughout the stage, warping Peppino to a bonus room where the player can complete light platforming puzzles to score even more points. Gerome the janitor is also hidden somewhere and will follow the player when found, required for unlocking the door to the Tower Secret Treasure.

Each floor of the tower features a maximum of four levels and a boss fight, where Peppino has to face off against a dangerous adversary in a small arena. Unlike the regular levels, he is given six hit points, more akin to a regular action game. Losing all six immediately kicks the player out of the battle, forcing them to try again from the beginning. If the player successfully defeats the boss, they are awarded with a Giant Key, unlocking access to the next floor.

updates [ ]

Pizza Tower has had not many updates (as of writing this) since launch (excluding bug patches).

Halloween update [ ]

The Halloween update is an update that added an event that happened from October 23, 2023 to November 13, 2023. This event introduced 2 new levels 1 exclusive to the event and 1 being permanent, and new hub decorations exclusive to the event.

The update introduced a new controls screen, as well as a new pause menu with a Chef Tasks section, meant to make it easier to know the amount of achievements left on a level. It also included reworks for Gnome Forest , Oh Shit! , Peppibot Factory , and Pizzascare , in order to make P Ranking those stages easier on parts that were difficult to keep the combo at. Secrets Of The World , a randomized combination of all the 57 secrets, and Tricky Treat , a Halloween-themed level that can only be accessed upon collecting each pumpkin on every level, are also added on this update.

One day before the update, McPig started a live on Twitch and stated that as soon as he finished Donkey Kong 64, Pizza Tower would be updated.

It released on October 23, 2023.

The Noise update [ ]

The Noise Update is a major free update of Pizza Tower. Its main feature is The Noise being added as a playable character, offering a unique moveset and some minor changes in a few levels and bosses.

It also contains a good amount of new content, such as extra save files for playing with The Noise, new clothes that can be unlocked for him, new music, etc.

The update would've been released if McPig and other people finished Ancient Aliens in DOOM. He played as PTG in the stream. There were some late comers such as Maurice, Homer Simpson and The Real Doise.

It released on March 11, 2024, and it was stated to be a “New Game+” on the Pizza Tower official twitter account.

Development [ ]

Before the idea of Pizza Tower came to be, lead designer Geoffroy "McPig" Lanctôt (known as "Pizza Tower Guy" until May 21, 2021) had thought of making a horror comic series about a deranged chef fighting pizza demons in his own restaurant. [1] This idea didn't get past sketches, though the concept and main character were eventually reused for a 2D horror-themed RPG possibly titled "Pizza Massacre," [2] which slowly but surely provided the base for Pizza Tower. [3]

Pizza Tower began development March 2018.

On March 14, 2018, McPig made a post on his Tumblr page discussing a game concept he's been working on titled "The Leaning Tower of Pizza," giving the first glimpse of Pizza Tower to the world. [4] The game was described as a mix between the puzzle solving of Wario Land 2 and the rush mechanic of Wario Land 4 with aiding, but at the same time hindering transformations . Alongside this description was a series of concept art showing several different mechanics and designs. Due to this new project, Pizza Tower Guy decided to halt his progress on his first game, Wieners Don't Use Drugs , of which was the main focus of his Tumblr page before this point.

Later that day, McPig posted the first look at Pizza Tower's gameplay in a very early state, [5] commencing what's known as the Preearlytestbuild . He would continue to send more gameplay footage, sprites, and answer questions on his Tumblr page, with his last post regarding Pizza Tower being posted on January 13, 2019. [6] Before then, on June 17, 2018, he had created the official Pizza Tower Discord. [7]

Pizza Tower's first public demo , the Halloween Demo , was posted on October 31, 2018 [8] along with a Hard Mode at 5:22 PM of the same day. In these early builds, there were no set composers, so they used a commissioned song from Dim Widdy [9] in the form of "Funiculi Funicula", the current game's Tutorial theme, as well as unrelated video game rips.

Some time around November, 2018, [10] Mr. Sauceman sent McPig the first version of "It's Pizza Time!". McPig immediately loved it, hiring Mr. Sauceman as a full-on composer for Pizza Tower. [11] Mr. Sauceman's music would first be heard in-game on December 5, 2018, when the second public demo, Demo 2 , released. [12] Some time after, ClascyJitto was hired as a second composer after posting several promising remixes in the Discord.

At an unknown time, an earlier build from prior to the Halloween Demo dating back to September 16, 2018 was also released publicly in the form of the Earlytestbuild .

On December 13, 2018, McPig had created the Pizza Tower Patreon. [13] This is where most future builds were posted, only being given to Patreon supporters who pay $5 or more monthly. These builds would include new levels and mechanics for the supporters to test out and critique.

On January 12, 2019, the January Patreon Build was posted, introducing early versions of Oregano Desert , Oh Shit! , and Peppibot Factory . On March 7, 2019, the March Patreon Build was posted, allowing supporters to play as The Noise in an early version of Refridgerator-Refrigerador-Freezererator . On April 1, 2019, the GOLF demo was released publicly, jokingly showcasing an early version of Greaseball in a custom level. On May 25, 2019, the Hub Room Test Build was posted for Patrons only, adding an outdoor section to Mansion .

On September 29, 2019, the SAGE 2019 Demo was released publicly for the Sonic Amateur Games Expo of that year. It brought many new players in, boosting Pizza Tower's popularity greatly. This was followed by another public demo in the form of Noise's Hardoween on October 30, 2019, which starred The Noise as the only playable character in an earlier version of Pizzascare .

On December 13, 2019, the December Patreon Build was posted, introducing an early version of John Gutter . This was followed by the final public demo, Peppino's Xmas Break on December 30, 2019, which had Peppino venturing through an earlier version of Strongcold . On January 8, 9, and 10, 2020, three Patreon builds focusing on The Noise's new moveset were posted. On February 2, 2020, two Patreon builds were posted showcasing an earlier version of Dragon Lair .

On February 7, 2020, the first Level Editor Build was posted with the aid of a Patron named Sertif. This was followed on February 24, 2020 by a build showcasing an updated Oregano Desert, which itself was followed by a quickly removed build showcasing The Wasteyard . The Level Editor Build 2.0 was then posted at an unknown time after.

On April 25, 27, and 30, 2020, three builds were posted focusing on the levels of the Western District and the addition of The Vigilante as a playable character. The Level Editor Build 3.0 was then posted on May 13, 2020.

On July 7 and 11, 2020, two builds were posted revealing Crust Cove (Known at the time as Pineapple Beach) and Gnome Forest , marking Sertif as official co-programmer of the game. This is followed by the Level Editor Build 4.3 on August 30, 2020.

On April 3rd, 2021, a new build was released that contained every planned level in the game, but in an early state with most missing tilesets and/or backgrounds and many assets using placeholder sprites. This build was announced a month earlier.

McPig and Sertif are continuously working on the game as Tour de Pizza, the former showing his progress through Twitch streams.

On June 13, 2022, the final build for the game was released, nicknamed the "Eggplant Build", which features 19 levels from the main game, but it doesn't include the Tutorial level, any of the boss fights or the final level that happens after the final boss, plus the levels in this build only have an Eggplant rank. The full game was originally planned to be released in the third quarter of 2022, but it missed it's launch window due to McPig currently polishing up the levels and tweaking them by adding details to those levels on his Twitch.

On December 2, 2022, the Steam page for Pizza Tower was put up, along with a trailer. This also confirmed the game's release date, which was on January 26, 2023. You can see the trailer here.

Reception [ ]

Pizza Tower received overwhelmingly positive reviews according to the game's Steam reviews.

About Pizza Tower

Pizza Tower is a 2023 platform game. Tour De Pizza independently developed it. That was available for Windows and the Steam Deck only through the Steam store. In order to save his pizzeria, Peppino Spaghetti, a pizza chef, must navigate the game’s namesake tower.

The gameplay focuses on raising score, keeping combos going, collecting items, and moving quickly. A variety of moves and attacks are useful to accomplish these goals. The player starts an escape sequence at the end of each level, which forces them to race back to the beginning of the level.

Unlike the majority of other platform games, the player has no health or lives during normal gameplay. And there are no standard game difficulty levels; instead, the difficulty of most levels depends on the player’s performance.

Pizza Tower’s design takes heavy inspiration from entertainment during the 1990s, especially the fourth generation of video game consoles. The game’s elements and mechanics followed the Wario Land, Jazz Jackrabbit, Earthworm Jim, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Metroid video game series.

How to play Pizza Tower

Pizza Tower came out on January 26, 2023. This was to positive reception from critics, who praised its gameplay, aesthetics, music, humor, and similarities to the Wario Land series. In the platform game Pizza Tower, Peppino Spaghetti must make his way through each floor of a tower under the authority of the player. Each of the tower’s five floors has four levels and a boss (except Floor 5, which instead has three levels and a boss). Five Toppins (little animals that resemble pizza toppings) are trapped in each level.

And the player must free them in order to earn money and points needed to access boss stages. The player must gather and deliver the janitor Gerome to the entrance. So that it can unlock the door that conceals the hidden treasure on each level. Most levels also have three secret rooms, which are quick challenges that award extra points and enhance the level’s completion.

Peppino Pizza

Peppino may body slam adversaries from above (which also removes obstructions) or use a Grab Dash to grab them and launch them as a projectile. It can perform a Mach Run, which substantially enhances his speed and enables him to run up walls, defeat and stun adversaries. And it can help him smash most blocks by running into them, similar to Wario Land 4’s Dash Attack. Peppino may also do a Super Jump in this state, which is akin to a Shinespark in Super Metroid. With this move, he leaps straight up while destroying any impediments in his way until he hits a ceiling or exits the space.

Some moves, including the Parry are in the lesson. Also, the game has game mechanics, power-ups that alter Peppino’s powers, and several levels-specific transformations. They include Shotgun, which adds ranged attacks and the capacity to destroy certain blocks.

Pepper Pizza offers invincibility and levitation, and Knight allows the player to harm on touch and slide on slopes. Although their move sets are identical to Peppino’s, supporting characters Gustavo and Brick are available in specific stages. And they also have longer-range attacks and double jumps.

Control Guide

  • Z – PLAY/Select/Jump
  • Arrow keys – Move/Ladder
  • Up + Z – Highjump
  • Down while falling – Freefall

A combo starts when a defeated gets longer with each one after that. The combo expires after about 7 seconds. To continue the combo, the player must kill further foes or get more collectibles to raise their score, which extends the combo’s duration. The player is not injured when they take damage; instead, their score decreased.

This is to continue the combo and finish the timed objectives is smaller. Boss fights, when Peppino has a health bar and can be slain, are the only levels where this rule is disregarded. A combo starts when an adversary lose and gets longer with each one after that. The combo is timed and expires after about 7 seconds. To continue the combo, the player must kill further foes or get more collectibles to raise their score, which extends the combo’s duration.

The player is not injured when they take damage. Instead, they reduce the score and their window to continue the combo and finish the timed objectives is smaller. Boss fights, when Peppino has a health bar and can be slain, are the only levels.

Pizzaface will show up to follow the player through the stage if the countdown expires, murdering them if he makes contact with them, and pushing them out of the level if he doesn’t. With the exception of two fully-timed levels, which automatically fail when the timer expires, a level can still be finished even if the timer runs out. Pizzaface can still be outrun.

Player of the game

The player has a ranking after completing each level based on their performance and score: D, C, B, A, and S ranks. This is based on the player’s score, with D denoting an extremely low score and S denoting acquiring nearly all the points in a level. However, the player can only reach level P if the player accumulates enough points for a S rank.

They have to goes through all three secrets, collects Gerome and the tower secret treasure, completes the second lap, and maintains. In addition, money for the player for discovering Toppins in the level; this money helps with unlocking boss stages. In boss battles, the player’s rank depends on how often they got damaged. D for more than nine times, and P for never being damaged. With achievements or specific behaviors, players can obtain additional items, such as palette swap costumes for Peppino.

Development of the game Pizza Tower

McPig, one of the developers from Tour De Pizza , thought about making a horror-themed comic series about a deranged chef who fought pizza demons in his own restaurant, citing Courage the Cowardly Dog as inspiration. Pizza Tower began development around 2018, going through many different concepts, revisions, and demo builds over 5 years of development. Development was supported through Tour De Pizza’s Patreon. McPig was the project’s only artist and coder.

ClascyJitto/Frostix and Mr. Sauceman were the game’s primary composers. PostElvis composed the main menu theme, while Jack Knife and Kyoobot appeared on “Pizza Mayhem”. The game’s unused theme song featured as a bonus track on the official soundtrack.

Mr. Sauceman, had only viewed composing as “basically a hobby” and sent McPig an early version of “It’s Pizza Time!”. The theme in the Pizza Time escape phase and a leitmotif in other tracks, initially not expecting to hear anything back. The Pizza Tower soundtrack ultimately became his first published work.

Featured as a transformation in the level “Fun Farm” is Mort, a chicken that is the protagonist of the 2000 PlayStation game Mort the Chicken. Ed Annunziata, the creator of the character, gave Tour De Pizza permission for Mort to appear in the game.

Pizza Tower

Pizza Tower is a game inspired by the Wario Land series featuring smooth squash-and-stretch animations and... pizza. Lots and lots of pizza.

With the game's lengthy and open development timeline, reusing of old assets, features that would get reused and scrapped anyway, and a bunch of builds that the public got to play before release (and possibly more stuff not found yet), there's more to unpack here than a stack of pizza boxes.

Console/debug controller.

Windows-PizzaTower-ConsoleMenu-1.png

A simple debug mode in the form of a console exists in the game's files, and can be re-enabled by adding the parameter -debug to Steam's startup options, or the application's desktop shortcut. Another alternative includes modifying the data.win (not with notepad) and finding obj_debugcontroller_Create_0 in the code tab; Go to the disassembly tab to change pushi.e 0 to pushi.e 1, and then save. From here, pressing F5 will enable an object titled obj_debuggingcontroller and reveal a console with various preset commands.

For any commands expecting a true or false statement, you can also enter 1 or 0. Also note that misspelling "true" and/or "false" will make the game crash.

  • alltoppins - Gather all Toppins together at once. They'll spawn right behind the player, though the Mushroom will appear behind the Pineapple, rather than in front of the Cheese.
  • bossinv - Make the player invincible during boss battles. The player will still get hit, but not lose any health. Use the command again to disable invincibility.
  • destroyice - Specifically meant for Refrigerator-Refrigerador-Freezerator to unmelt parts of the stage, which'll destroy every instance of obj_iceblock and stay destroyed for the remainder of the level.
  • editor - Sends the player to the editor room ( rm_editor ), and spawns the object intended for custom level creation ( obj_editor ). The command was previously disabled until the v1.0.594 update, although it currently only crashes the game due to obj_editor lacking a line of code.
  • givekey - Give the player a key. It won't show up and float around them, but they will be able to unlock doors.
  • hardmode [true/false] - Toggle the scrapped hard mode feature . Using the command to disable it won't make Snick.exe disappear unless you move to another room.
  • hidetiles [true/false] - Toggle all the tiles present in the current room.
  • kill_boss - Instantly defeats whichever boss the player has engaged in a battle with. Peculiarly doesn't give a P rank if used, and may cause minor sound glitches if the command is used when the boss is in an animation that utilizes a sound effect. Added in v1.1.0.
  • loadtest - Executes the commands showcollisions 1 and player_room rm_testing4 A . As this testing room is actively used with each revision, the game may crash. The player can optionally also execute this command by pressing F8.
  • lockcam - Lock the player camera in place. Use the command again to re-enable camera movement.
  • noclip - Stop all movement and fly through walls using the arrow keys. Press the Dash button to fly faster and the Jump button to disable it.
  • othertest - Spawns you into an unused test room, however it warps you immediately into the softlock room after, which is used when backtracking to the beginning of Tricky Treat in the Ghost transformation. The game closes itself after a short while. Added in v1.0.594.
  • panic [time (optional)] - Start Pizza Time . The time must be set in milliseconds, so value 30 will roughly amount to 3 seconds of escape time. The default value is 4000. Use the command again to disable Pizza Time , though this will not kill Pizzaface if he's already spawned in. (Do be mindful about using this command during the intro cinematic; If Pizzaface is spawned here and the player gets caught, this will overwrite the first save file, effectively deleting it).
  • player_room [room] [door letter] - Teleport to the specified room and door letter (A to G). If no door letter exists, the player will spawn on the same coordinates of the previous room they left from.
  • normal - Regular.
  • knightpep - Knight Peppino from Pizzascape .
  • firemouth - Firemouth Peppino from Oregano Desert .
  • cheesepep - Cheese Peppino from Oh Shit!
  • ratmount - Gustavo, though he'll spawn without Brick.
  • roomcheck - Rapidly cycles through every playable hub, level and boss in the game to check if no rooms were to crash the game at any point. Peculiarly, unused rooms forest_4 , war_4 and war_5 are included in the cycle, while tower_peppinohouse and characterselect aren't. Once the check passes, the player will end up in the hub entrance during Pizza Time with a P rank, and will also be rewarded the "Face Off" Chef Task and corresponding Steam achievement, if not unlocked. (This won't corrupt/automatically delete the corresponding save file, however it will make it unable to delete through normal means).
  • set_boss_hp [value] - Set how much health a boss has. Added in v1.1.0.
  • set_combo [value] [time (optional)] - Set how much of a combo is built up. The default time value is 60, equivalent to 6 seconds of leeway.
  • showcollisions [true/false] - Toggle the collisions for solids, slopes, platforms and breakable blocks.
  • show_debug_overlay [true/false] - Toggles an overlay in the top left-hand corner that displays an FPS counter, along with a resource monitor and two additional numbers.
  • showhud [true/false] - Toggle the HUD during gameplay.
  • switch_char - Changes Peppino into The Noise, and vice versa. Added in v1.0.594.
  • test_p_rank - Automatically gives all the credentials to receive a level's P rank, with an escape time of 40 seconds, the player in the 2nd lap, all secrets, Toppins, treasure, a purple max combo, and the required score threshold. This functions identically in boss battles. Added in v1.1.0.
  • unlock_boss_key [1/4] - Unlock the boss keys required to visit the next world. The number represents what world the key is meant for.
  • unlock_toppins - Unlock all five Toppins for one of the 19 levels. The changes are saved immediately to the selected save file.

Some deprecated commands exist too that will not work unless the game is modified further.

  • camera_zoom [value] [speed] - Set the zoom amount and speed to zoom into. No function in the game ever uses this.
  • giveheat - Adds an extra row of heat to the Heat Meter from the 2021 - Eggplant builds, not the Heat Meter that's turned on in hard mode.
  • gateswitchmax - Unknown, simply crashes the game when entered into the console.
  • throwarc - It's not known what this command was meant to be. It's related to a global variable of the same name, but it's not linked to anything.

Unused Playable Characters

The first two bosses were meant to be playable at different points in time, and an old version of the Noise is left over as well. Snick, a SAGE 2019 demo -exclusive character, also has some leftovers; see Pizza Tower/SAGE 2019 Leftovers#Playable Snick the Porcupine for more information.

The Noise (Pogo Moveset)

The Noise was playable from the March 2019 Patreon build up to the September 2021 playtest build . He was removed around the time of the Eggplant Patreon build in 2022, before being added back post-launch in March 2024 with a new moveset.

The new Noise does not , however, replace the old Noise, as the two use different character values. Because of this, the old Noise is still left over, and his moveset is completely different. He can only dash by grabbing and sliding, entering a dash using his skateboard after the slide ends. Instead of dashing when pressing the dash button, he jumps around on a pogo stick and builds infinite speed until he hits a wall. After bouncing a few times, he'll start blinking white, which indicates that you're able to use his jetpack. With his jetpack, he can do superjumps both up and sideways, in which he's able to move left and right or up and down depending on which way you're facing. He also does wall jumps instead of wall-running. He also flies up in the air at fast speeds if he grabs the wall, though this seems to be unintentional. Note that post-Noise Update, he'll crash the game when dashing or using his jetpack due to his Mach 3 code being removed.

He also had his Pepper Pizza palette enabled by default, and only had his palettes from the 2020 builds implemented. He also previously wouldn't respawn in front of level doors after exiting a level, instead being off-screen in another part of the map, usually out of bounds or stuck in a wall.

The Noise (Peppino Moveset, Pre-Noise Update Only)

In addition to Pogo Noise, a version of the Noise with the same moveset as Peppino was also present in Pre-Noise Update versions of the game. Rather than having his own character value, he shares one with Peppino, being enabled when the variable ispeppino is set to false and the script scr_characterspr is used to change his sprites to the Noise's. He lacks sprites for some moves, resulting in him reverting to Peppino's sprites until the action is over. This version of the Noise was replaced by the new Noise in the Noise Update.

The Vigilante

The Vigilante was playable from the April 2020 Patreon build up to the September 2021 playtest build. Like the Noise, he was removed around the time of the Eggplant build in 2022; unlike the Noise, Tour De Pizza does not plan to re-add the Vigilante , stating in July 2022 he required too much work.

In prerelease builds, the Vigilante used a gun instead of a dash and could throw dynamite. He had a few limitations, as he was locked in Mach 3, couldn't break through metal blocks (only possible with dynamite), couldn't use transformations (which would only harm him) and, unlike the other characters, had a health system. He started with 100 HP, lost 25 by taking damage, and gained 1 by collecting toppings and 20 for each big collectible. Besides his regular gameplay animations, none of his animations for the updated HUD were ever created. A good chunk of his animations were recycled in his boss fight.

In the final game, playing as the Vigilante will expose some of Peppino's sprites when doing specific moves. He can no longer throw dynamite, as the game used a fourth face button for this, which is no longer implemented. His moveset is partially functional, using Peppino's moveset with the ability to use your gun by holding Down and pressing Attack , though he won't be able to get far into levels that heavily rely on transformations or metal blocks. Just like the old Noise, he'll crash the game when reaching Mach 3 in post-Noise Update builds of the game due to his Mach 3 code being removed.

Pepperman was planned to be a playable character only in Refrigerator-Refrigerador-Freezerator , much like how Gustavo & Brick is only playable in Gnome Forest and The Pig City . His character value was " M " because " P " was already occupied by Peppino. His moveset was very basic, as he could only dash by pressing the Dash button, ground pound, and taunt mid-air. He had no special abilities or transformations besides that, and was never officially playable in any released build as the idea for him to be playable was quickly scrapped. Almost all animations that were created for him were recycled for his boss fight.

In the final game, Pepperman is in a broken state. He can't pass through many obstacles and his animations sometimes freeze. He can harm enemies, but can't bounce on them. Going through doors is also unusually fast and no gates close behind him.

Unused Modes, Mechanics & Options

Windows-PizzaTower-Coop-1.png

Two-player co-op for the main campaign was planned and worked on several times throughout the game's development from mid-2019 to mid-2021. Co-op would've involved both players either helping each other along the way or duking it out. Hitting the other player will spawn a flag above their body and make them the lead, and whoever got the highest score would get the rank, though there were no penalties besides that. With the game's fast nature, to prevent both players from going off-screen constantly, a tumble mechanic was added exclusively to this mode where both players get locked into Mach 3 when they run into each other. The animation was later reused for the phase transition cutscenes during The Noise's boss battle.

What's left of co-op is in a very broken state. Both players can spawn, but actions such as running off-screen and respawning will crash the game. A handful of objects, enemies and bosses have even been programmed to support co-op, but is otherwise inaccessible. Why the mode was scrapped is unknown, though it's likely because the mode didn't really work well with the game's speed and window size.

Windows-PizzaTower-HardMode-1.png

Some basic work was done at some point to add a hard mode to the game. Even though it goes unused, you don't even need to modify the game itself to access it. Enable the debug console (mentioned above) and type hardmode true (or hardmode 1 ) in the command window.

Enabling hard mode will display an earlier version of the scrapped Heat Meter and spawn Snick.exe around the player, a character that was intended to only show up in the SAGE 2019 demo. After some time passes, Snick.exe will start dropping random enemies on the ground, much like Fake Santa . With each two enemies killed, the meter goes up. Once the meter hits its max, Snick.exe may start spawning as much as four enemies at a time. Once the player takes damage, the meter will go down and the player will need to kill more than 2 enemies to get the meter back up. Keeping up momentum will prevent Snick.exe from spawning enemies, as he's only able to spawn them if he's not in a solid object.

Some other ideas for hard mode were shared, such as making the actual Heat Meter mechanic a hard mode exclusive, but all of these plans fell through as this mode was quickly subjected to be scrapped.

Scaling Modes

In the options screen under the video category, there was originally an extra option for screen scaling with the option to pick from three modes; "Fit", a default option that resizes the screen but remains the 16:9 aspect ratio, "Pixel Perfect", a mode that shrinks the screen down to a 960x540 image when windowed, and "Expand", which expands the usual 960x540 window size to whatever one wishes. The Pixel Perfect option even exists in the October playtest build , but the entire option was removed from the final release with the latter of the two options both having their own issues.

The Pixel Perfect option doesn't keep a 960x540 resolution when the aspect ratio isn't 16:9. This causes things such as the on-screen UI to look squashed, and any special screens that may display (such as the pause screen, title cards or Gustavo & Brick switch cards) won't overlap the whole screen.

The Expand option's problems are visible when playing the game. Parts of the screen that weren't supposed to be visibile now are, backgrounds that aren't supposed to loop vertically now do, title cards aren't centered and the title screen/save select menu is broken. Despite this, some liberties were taken to fully develop this option as the Technical Difficulty screen is centered, the pause screen is properly formatted and most of the on-screen UI elements are properly separated.

Enabling these scaling modes doesn't require the need to modify the game's files. The game checks on startup for a variable titled " scale_mode " in any of the three save files, though never writes this in them at any point. To enable it, simply add that variable under the group that reads " [Options] " with either one of three numbers:

  • 0 - Fit (default).
  • 1 - Pixel Perfect.
  • 2 - Expand.

Unused text that was meant to go in the options screen exists too.

TV Text Bubble

Windows-PizzaTower-TextBubbleExample-1.png

Originally, with the redesign of the HUD seen during gameplay, the TV was going to be a bit more lively by using a text bubble. If the player got to a certain point in a level, the TV would start speaking to them.

The first build that added the text bubble was the April 2021 Patreon build, where the TV would speak to the player as a TV host of sorts. He didn't give really much information on how to play the game, and the TV host was more just a wisecracker, keeping an eye on Peppino while giving lore about the environment and the tower itself. Only two levels had this feature, John Gutter and Pizzascape . From that point onward, the TV would just give placeholder text if the player got into a transformation. The problem with this is that nobody would really be paying attention to what the TV announcer had to say, as the player was already busy exploring the levels.

The final build using the text bubble was the Eggplant Patreon build, which simplified the concept in just telling the player how to control Peppino and work with the game's mechanics. This was mostly used in John Gutter , with Pizzascape only having one prompt telling the player how to control the Knight transformation. The text bubble feature was never fully realized after this, as a tutorial was added to the final game, as well as short one-time prompts for the transformations' movesets, leaving the text bubble feature useless, thus was scrapped.

Pretty much everything to do with the text bubble, in terms of scripts and objects, are present in the final game (minus the text that was displayed in the Eggplant build). Reactivating it is easy too; Simply place obj_tvtrigger anywhere in a level and add this piece of code to a room object's creation script:

  • Text - Self explanatory, set the text that will be displayed.
  • Special Prompt - ?
  • Sprite - Set the sprite for the TV during. Any valid sprite will display, including ones not made for the TV HUD.
  • Scroll Speed - Set the speed the text should scroll at. The April 2021 Patreon build used scroll speed 3 , and Eggplant used 2.5 .

An example of a properly configured text bubble would be this:

Obscured & Unseen Sprites

These sprites aren't completely unused, but they can't regularly be seen in the game's campaign.

Stunned Pizzahead

Pizzahead's 2nd phase has some otherwise unused functionality where he can take away the player's transformation if he ever bumps into them. However, if Pizzahead is walking and hits Peppino while in the Knight transformation, he'll show an unseen stunned animation for three seconds and then continue where he left off. This happens because an older version of the boss fight once utilized the Knight transformation for an enguarde attack ( an attack that still exists in the game's files as a sketch ), but the code that checks if the player is in a specific transformation was not removed.

The sprite on display was meant to be reused as a stun animation for phase 3 as seen in the October playtest build , but it went unused anyway.

Knight Noise Bump

PizzaTower-Spr playerN knightbump.png

The Noise, as to be expected, has sprites to fill in for most if not all of Peppino's actions and transformations, and the Knight transformation is no exception. The Noise's version of the transformation bounces off the walls and continues going rather than coming to a halt like Peppino does, so the Noise's version of this sprite goes unused.

Final Hallway Background

Windows-PizzaTower-FinalHallwayHiddenBG-1.png

The title card for The Crumbling Tower of Pizza uses a separate room to display the card. However, if the code that displays the title card is disabled and graphic_42571A09 is removed, a background of Pizzaface with the five Toppins can be seen, with some leftover tiles from the level itself being near the bottom of the screen. Parts of the background can be seen in Floor 5's Chef Task room, though most of it will still be obscured.

Hidden Metal Block Sprite

All hidden metal walls in the game have an unused idle sprite that's obscured by tiles. This wall with a face was originally meant to replace the metal wall that appears in the final game, though people didn't like it very much, and it was later reverted. The hidden walls didn't have their sprites changed however.

Windows-PizzaTower-HiddenMetalBlock-1.png

To view these walls in-game, enable the console and use the command showcollisions true .

Clown TV Sprites

During the midpoint of Pizza Tower's development cycle, a clown transformation was planned. However, it was cut from the main game due to a shift in the game's design philosophy; instead, it was repurposed as a secret inside World 3's Hub.

The respective TV animations for it (Peppino and The Noise) go unseen because the HUD is disabled in the hub world.

Unused Audio

Filename: mu_medievalremix

Spaghetti is a remixed version of Cold Spaghetti that was meant to play during the first inside section of Pizzascape . It never does and neither does it show up in the sound test. The version heard here is the outdated version called "Cold Spaghetti Remix" on SoundCloud . The song was removed because the devs wanted Hot Spaghetti to play for longer.

Unused Take of Unearthly Blues

Filename: PTentrance

A part of an earlier rendition of Unearthly Blues that uses older samples and a much, much louder guitar. The song fades out at an earlier point too.

Filename: mu_timesup

Intended to be the game's Time's Up theme when Pizzaface caught up with the player. It got replaced with Your Fat Ass Slows You Down . However, the "stomp" sound effect from this file is used in the "timesup" event for the FMOD project.

Sound Effects

Enemy screams.

Filenames: sfx_scream1 , sfx_scream4 , sfx_scream7

Some early enemy screams that were recorded by members of the Pizza Tower Discord as part of a screaming contest. These had a rare chance of playing after defeating an enemy, rather than scaring them before taking them out. Out of the ten winning screams, only three are left in the final game, titled sfx_scream1 , sfx_scream4 and sfx_scream7 recorded by MegapiemanPHD , Sledge and RJ in order.

Be aware of some loud audio as this screaming contest does, in fact, have screaming.

Shotgun Load

Filename: sfx_shotgungot

A different variant for loading a shotgun. This sound effect was used for a majority of the game's development and replaced pretty late.

Music Without Purpose

These tracks were intended to be used at different points throughout the game, but most were reduced to being just bonus tracks that can be unlocked in the sound test.

Choosing the Toppings

Filename: 59_BONUS_Choosing_the_Toppings

Choosing the Toppings was intended to be the theme for the (scrapped) level editor. It's not in the sound test, but it is included in the game's original soundtrack release, and it can be heard when waiting for funiculi holiday to finish during the credits.

Pizza Mayhem

Filename: 58 Pizza Mayhem

Pizza Mayhem was originally intended to be the game's opening theme with vocals sung by Bernadette "Kyoobot" Perez , but instead got replaced with Time for a Smackdown . Although the track can be heard in-game through the sound test, it never plays at any point during the game's main campaign. The ending was reused for an unheard segment of "Okay Campers Rise And Shine!" and can be heard in the game's OST.

An instrumental version is included as well. Filename: Pizza_Tower_OST_-_Pizza_Mayhem_Instrumental

Unused Lapping Tutorial Text

John Gutter was originally intended to have a Pizza Granny in the lapping room instructing the player on how to do laps. It was probably removed as not only is lapping very straight forward in itself, but there's also a Pizza Granny in the hub that basically says the same thing. The variable with this unused message is titled tutorial_lap , and the October playtest build uses this message.

Internal Names

The names for each of the game's levels in the files differ from what's seen in-game. These internal names were also used for the level select before the final names were decided upon.

The object that triggers the Clown transformation is called obj_skateboard in the files. This is due to earlier versions of the game previously using this same object (with a different sprite) to initiate a Skateboard transformation, of which is similar in gameplay to the Clown transformation.

Project File Name

Even though the game's project file name can't be seen in-game, it can be found in the game's files and on the save file directory. "GM2" refers to Game Maker 2 Studio, with this name being used ever since the game's files were converted to the new engine.

Unused Halloween Update Level Editor

(Not to be confused with the level editor patreon builds, this is a new editor in the final game, added in the 1.0.594 update.)

Reactivating The Editor And "editor.json" Workings

As you may have seen in the Console/Debug Controller section, there is an "editor" command which sends you to the editor room but crashes due to a missing line of code. To fix it you simply need to add an editor.json file in your AppData/Roaming/PizzaTower_GM2/editor folder. The folder will not exist by default and you have to create it.

Here is one line to put in the file, to run the editor and see all features, and if you understand the format you can extend it. Keep in mind the "General" category is required for the editor to function.

{ "objects": [ "name": "General", "order": 0, "objects": [ { "ID": 0, "name": "Solid", "object_index": "obj_solid", "sprite_index": "spr_wall", "snap_tile_val": 32, "mask_index": "spr_wall", "components" : [ { "type": "resize", "snap": 32, "dock": "Left", "lock": 1 }, { "type" : "mirror" } ] } ] ], "backgrounds": [ "bg_pumpkin1", "bg_pumpkin2" ] }

You must then open Pizza Tower's data.win in UndertaleModTool, and in obj_editor's Create event's dissassembly, and paste in below the [0]: :

call.i gml_Script_get_editor_data(argc=0)

And the editor command should no longer crash.

Editor Features

Pizzatower halloween editor.png

Upon entering, the player will be presented with a menu with the options: New, Edit, Play and Delete. Of all of them, only New is usable, and it creates a new level. The editor has an object selection menu (functional), a tile menu (non functioning, you can just create a layer but not add tiles), a backgrounds menu (functional), a rooms menu (functional) and a settings menu (functional, except Save Level, Test Level and Level Settings).

The objects can also be rescaled vertically if the resize component is applied, but not horizontally, which is likely a bug, the "dock" variable of the resize component determines which side the button to rescale will appear on. It can also be mirrored through a button that appears if the mirror component is activated.

Critic Reviews for Pizza Tower

Pizza Tower is a blisteringly fast 2D platformer with an unmistakable art style and unforgettable soundtrack that transcends its Wario Land inspirations and finds its own identity as one of the most energetic, fun, and creative 2D platformers in recent memory.

A brilliantly energetic and creative platformer that doesn't just do right by its inspiration Wario Land, but actually surpasses it.

Metro GameCentral

The Wario Land formula is reinvented and improved upon in this magnificently clever and surreal platformer, that is more fun than any of the official Nintendo games.

Pizza Tower delivers one of the most unique video game experiences in recent years. from amazing bossfights to incredible soundtrack, Pizza Tower is a treat for eyes and ears!

WayTooManyGames

We know we are probably not going to get a new Wario Land anytime soon. As a result, Pizza Tower feels like a massive breath of fresh air. It took everything that worked in those games (excluding the portability, unless you’re a lucky Steam Deck owner), added in a truckload of funny, 90s-as-hell imagery, and dropped it into Steam like the homage we’ve been waiting for.

Kakuchopurei

Trust me when I say that Pizza Tower fills in that 2D platforming niche that can be enjoyed by casual fans and hardcore connoisseurs who long for Nintendo to make a new non-minigame Wario title that isn’t simplified garbage. With developer Tour De Pizza around keeping the dream alive, we don’t need it. Pizza Tower is a superior substitute that takes what its developers learn from past Wario Land platformers and makes it fresh again.

Pizza Tower is a phantasmagoric, spicy and surreal game that brings out the very best of '90s platformers.

Pizza Tower may be inspired by platformers of yore, but it’s much more than nostalgic fluff. It has sharpened, tuned, evolved, and damn near perfected this odd niche of platforming. It’s the rare homage that is actually better than the things that inspired it, and I think you should give it a try.
